A Brief about Cenosphere Uses A cenosphere is an inert, lightweight hollow sphere that is made up largely of silica and alumina filled with air and gases. Cenosphere occurs naturally as a byproduct during the process of coal combustion at a thermal power plant. The particles consist of similar properties to manufactured hollow-sphere products such as fly ash, boiler slag, and bottom ash which are flushed out of the power plant in the form of a slurry paste that is then pumped into settling ponds.
