Sitting home feeling helpless and hopeless? In typical Durango fashion, community members and organizations are rising up to help friends and neighbors. And you can get in on the action, too.

This week, the Community Foundation Serving Southwest Colorado announced it is re-activating the Community Emergency Relief Fund.

Donations are now being accepted, which will deploy money to local organizations responding to the needs of community members most affected by the COVID-19 outbreak.

“Donations are designated for emergency use, and impactful distribution of funds will be determined as soon as possible by a committee of local stakeholders,” Briggen Wrinkle, Executive Director of the Community Foundation, said.

Stakeholders include representatives from the health, government, school, business and nonprofit sectors, and funds will be prioritized to meet the most immediate needs first, including public health and economic impacts.

CERF, designated for broad-based community emergencies in Southwest Colorado, was established in 2008 in response to the Season's restaurant fire. It has also been activated for the Gold King Mine spill in 2015, the Adobe Building fire in Pagosa Springs in 2016, as well as the 416 Fire in 2018.

The Community Foundation manages more than $6 million in investments for philanthropists in our community, ensuring donors can be impactful in the communities they call home.

LaVidaLocal 2 + 2 = 42 “Anyone who is capable of getting themselves made President should on no account be allowed to do the job.”

Something important happened when the late British writer Douglas Adams completed his popular Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy trilogy. Inspired by an expanding imaginary universe of comic social commentary, the author couldn’t stop at three books, so he added two more, maybe because he thought five was a better number.

Even with the possibility of reincarnation, we may never get a full explanation. In Adams’ third volume, his fictional computer named “Deep Thought” concluded, after 7.5 million years of computations, that the answer to the ultimate question of life, the universe and everything, was 42. When the author was asked why he chose that number, Adams replied he simply meant it as a joke, as if humor might be the only credible way to understand the universe, and this earth in particular.

Douglas Adams suffered a heart attack in 2001, age 49, not 42. Diehard fans grew suspicious. But here in America, especially since the 2016 election, political discourse may have strained our ability to laugh. Still, the template holds true. Though people express a stern unwillingness to discuss politics with each other, or get extremely angry when they do, much partisan posturing and outright balderdash has justifiably left some of us on the floor, rolling in fits of hysteria. Had we not been taught that the machinations of government deserve, like the flag itself, to be saluted and revered, we’d readily admit the silliness prevails there too.

I mean, really, milk and water are the only safe beverages to serve while senators consider the weighty matters of impeachment? I have to smile at that picture. And to require our senators sit at their desks and not jabber with their neighbors, and to avoid reading any materials not directly associated with the ongoing proceedings – this rule of silence, imposed on a group of politicians who, above all, love listening to themselves talk? Even the senators had to smirk. Deep Thought obviously has no place in the U.S. Senate chambers.

Hyperbole, which is a set of exaggerated statements or claims not meant to be interpreted literally, has taken hold of American politics, and even the most

ludicrous lies are applauded and taken as fact. In order for us to hope we will ever be identified as at least one form of intelligent life in the universe, perhaps it’s time we recognize absurdity and at least be willing to laugh at it.

Adams’ universe continued to expand with “The Tertiary Phase,” a radio drama/BBC audiobook. Six episodes were aired in 2004, three years after his death. I accidentally found them in a filing cabinet at the bottom of some basement stairs in a thrift store.

Episode 2 featured a rather ingenious otherworldly phenomenon, an imposed forcefield that stood beside a screen at the Lord’s Cricket Ground. Ford Prefect points it out to Arthur Dent, who doesn’t actually see it. Arthur wants to know why. Ford explains. “An SEP is something we can’t see, or don’t see, or our brain doesn’t let us see, because we think that it’s somebody else’s problem. That’s what SEP means. Somebody Else’s Problem. The brain just edits it out, it’s like a blind spot.”

But it’s not totally fictional, because an SEP has settled in the air above us like a great Vogon spacecraft. For those who haven’t read the series, the Vogons are an alien race from the planet Vogsphere sent to demolish planet Earth in order to facilitate the construction of a hyperspace express route. There are people among us unaware that a political bulldozer is idling its engine while we all finish our morning cup of coffee. Our climate, our courts and the rule of law, our election process, even our Constitution have been tagged with a big red X, which means scheduled for removal.

As for aliens, how about that one named Zaphod Beeblebrox who has two heads and three arms. His character is described as “hedonistic and irresponsible, narcissistic almost to the point of solipsism, and often extremely insensitive to the feelings of those around him.” Despite these flaws, he thinks of himself as charismatic.

As President of the Galaxy, he distracts his audiences so no one will discover who’s actually in charge. Eventually he steals the fastest spaceship in the universe because it is powered by the highly respected but equally impossible-tocontrol Infinite Improbability Drive. He’s certain he can handle it.

Douglas Adams has been lost to us now for almost 20 years, most likely comforted by his towel, giggling with a host of other creatures in some undisclosed corner of the universe, fully aware that the mischief he authored will one day suspiciously add up to whatever reality we deserve.

Recently, scientists discovered a closely related bacterium living deep in the seafloor, almost 2 miles beneath the surface of the Arctic Ocean. This new “cousin” to chlamydia is scarier though because it thrives in an extreme-pressure environment without food or oxygen, which has scientists puzzled. Healing through haikus To the editor, What the hell, we’re going to be stuck with this Corona/Covid 19 mess for awhile, why not have some fun with it? I propose the Telegraph has a weekly section of reader-contributed haikus about the virus, what people are doing to cope in the meantime, what we are observing in our community and generally sticking a thumb in the eye of this sickness – could be fun!

I have a first contribution to this temporary (not temporary enough!) section of the paper. Here goes.

House and Senate leadership jointly made the decision March 13, the same day the first victim of the virus 4

died in Colorado, a woman in her 80s from El Paso County with medical complications.

As the spread of coronavirus continues to expand, we have to practice social distancing, staying six feet apart from each other to slow the infection rate. In the Capitol, as in most places of work, following those suggestions isn’t always easy.

The State of Colorado is working to stay ahead of this virus, looking out for the public health and safety of every Coloradan. Our state is testing more people than any other state in the nation, and has drive-through testing locations in critical areas helping people in a safer, more efficient way. It is offering paid sick leave, wage replacement programs and unemployment insurance for the most vulnerable.

Members of more susceptible populations, citizens over 60 with chronic medical conditions, can renew their drivers’ licenses online to avoid crowds at Department of Motor Vehicles locations. Large events have been postponed, and we just passed a law providing more flexibility for participants in the political assemblies happening this and next month to avoid crowds.

In addition, the state is making it easier for medical professionals licensed in other states to be licensed here as quickly as possible. Dozens of registered nurses from out of state arrived this week to help Colorado communities hit the hardest. Other professionals are being trained to administer the COVID-19 test.

We can all help prevent catching and spreading the virus by practicing social distancing and following some basic steps in good health: wash your hands with soap regularly; use hand sanitizer; eat healthy food; exercise outside; keep your hands away from your face; stay away from large crowds; get plenty of sleep; avoid close contact with sick people; stay home if you’re sick; and cover your cough with a tissue or your inner elbow, and throw the tissue in the trash.

We in District 59 can be proud of the efforts our counties have made to prepare.

Gunnison County has reported positive test results for the virus. Public schools have extended spring break and Western Colorado University has gone online. The Health Department is emphasizing minimizing social contact, offering medical attention and has been running through different scenarios, perfecting their local response.

San Juan Basin Health Department is closely monitoring La Plata and Archuleta counties, providing a comprehensive webpage, sharing information with community partners and establishing an emergency response plan specifically designed for pandemics. Many schools in both counties have extended their spring breaks and prepared for online teaching.

Fort Lewis College lengthened spring break, and students will be taking classes online for several weeks.

The Ouray County Public Health Agency is preparing for what could be the inevitable by opening up constant chains of communication between residents, health-care providers, schools, CDPHE and CDC. They are focusing on data collection and causes of residents’ illnesses, injuries and death.

Visit ouraycountyco.gov/149/Public-Health Hinsdale and San Juan counties have clearly delineated their responses in the event COVID-19 hits there.

Though small, they are high-risk areas for people over 60 living at high altitudes and counties are targeting their health. Health departments are working closely with multiple agencies and schools, offering education and medical help.

A new era of e-campaigning Colorado candidates prepare for online campaigns, plead with state for flexibility

T

he first weeks of March are often a sprint for political candidates in Colorado. With a deadline looming, campaigns race to collect the thousands of signatures needed to guarantee themselves a spot on the primary ballot. It’s retail politics at its purest.

“That last week, that last six days, that’s the time that you normally would have just hit hard,” said Ken Drew, campaign manager for Democratic state Senate candidate Maria Orms.

March isn’t so normal anymore.

The coronavirus outbreak grounded campaigns just as the March 17 signature deadline approached. Voters are unwilling to pick up pens, and volunteers are hesitant to ring doorbells. One State House candidate – Pastor Terrence “Big T” Hughes – was hospitalized after a COVID-19 diagnosis, according to his family. It was a sobering reminder that COVID-19 is especially threatening to older people, who are often most involved in party politics.

Signature gathering is one of two ways to make the state ballot. Candidates can also try to win support at party political meeting. The parties are moving many of those assemblies and conventions to virtual formats, but the state hasn’t made any changes for the signature process.

Still, some campaigns – including Orms’ – cancelled signature gathering with a week or more to go. Drew said the thinking was, ‘“OK, if we keep this up, either someone we’re paying is going to get sick, or one of our volunteers, or one of these elderly people opening the door.’”

The campaign still thinks it got the 1,000 valid signatures it needs to make the ballot, although with less room for error than Drew would like. Others aren’t as confident.

“I didn’t get the threshold of what they are asking,” Democratic U.S. Senate candidate Diana Bray said. She called off her volunteers in the final two weeks of the eightweek signature period. She needed 10,500 valid signatures.

“I’ve been campaigning for a year and poured my own life and heart and soul into this, and of course I was thinking this was going to make it very tough to make it on to the ballot,” she said of her decision. “But I just couldn’t be complicit” in putting people at risk, Bray added.

Former Gov. John Hickenlooper turned in his signatures early and has already been certified by the Secretary of State for the U.S. Senate primary ballot. At the same time, he withdrew from the caucus-and-assembly process, citing “ongoing public health and safety concerns.” That leaves the assembly lane open for rival Andrew Romanoff, who has been dominating in that process, and perhaps opens space for another candidate to also win enough delegates – 30 percent or more – to make the ballot.

Bray knew she was short of the requirement, but she turned in her signatures on Monday regardless. She’s hoping state officials will change the requirements in light of the outbreak.

“How do you measure what 120 people would have done in two weeks?” Bray asked. She wants the state to allow all candidates onto the primary ballot and institute

a “ranked choice” system. That would give more power to the voters, she said.

Drew, of the Orms campaign, wants the state to simply lower the signature requirements to reflect the shortened gathering period. The current approach is unfair to candidates who take the signature route, he argued.

Others have suggested extending the signature deadline.

It was part of the conversation among state lawmakers and the Secretary of State’s office last week, but lawmakers didn’t ultimately address it.

Instead, they passed a law that allows parties to hold virtual assemblies and conventions. That will allow one branch of the primary process to continue uninterrupted, but it’s no help for candidates who opted for teh petition.

House Majority Leader Alec Garnett disagrees that the caucus-and-assembly candidates would have an advantage.

The Legislature focused on the assemblies because they were “large group settings” that attract older people and pose a greater public health risk.

Garnett said changing the signature requirement is “a fair question, and I think we can ... have a discussion about that.”

But the time for that may have run out. The signature requirements are set by law, and since the Legislature has done nothing to change that, Tuesday remained the deadline. Secretary of State Jena Griswold’s office said she hasn’t advocated “one way or another” about changes.

“I think everyone’s focus is getting through today’s petition deadline safely,” spokesman Steve Hurlbert wrote.

The shutdown could also reshape the race toward the general election.

One big question is what this will mean for ballot initiatives. Campaigners want voters to weigh in on subjects from housing to criminal justice, and they also need signatures to get on the ballot. Eight different initiatives are potentially at the signature-gathering stage right now, and others are earlier in the process.

“There’s two sides of it: Everybody’s home. But I don’t know how many people are answering their doors at this point,” said Michael Fields, a conservative organizer for a proposal to restrict the state Legislature’s use of fees.

Canvassing companies are still offering to work, according to Daniel Hayes, who wants voters to approve growth limits on the Front Range. He’s in talks with a contractor whose workers travel with hand sanitizer, and he thinks that the anti-development initiative will be appealing “because, frankly, I don’t think people want a ton of people coming here” amid a pandemic.

But with his signatures due by early June, he only puts his odds of making the ballot at 50-50. “I think it’s a great time to do it, but who knew this was the year this would happen?”

State economists hope that the worst of the virus’ impacts will pass by the summer, perhaps leaving time for a normal fall campaign. But the candidates are gearing up for an unusual season.

Drew suggested that the Democratic Party work on the infrastructure for online-only debates and other adjustments.

“Whatever we do, it’s not going to look like traditional politics. You’re not going to be able to knock on doors, kiss babies,” he said. “What does a virtual campaign look like?”

Medicinal mushrooms No need to search the woods … just go to the produce aisle

ith celebrity doctors on the medicinal mushroom bandwagon, many folks have become curious about those functional fungi beyond the ubiquitous buttons, crimini and portabellas. (All three are the same species, by the way.) Not everyone has the expertise to go out to the woods and forage for more interesting mushrooms. So, what’s a newly budding fungiphile to do?

A way to more or less guarantee that the mushrooms you’re gathering aren’t going to earn you a dirt nap, or at least a long sojourn on the toilet, is to forage at your local market. The United States is not the most mushroom-friendly place in the world, but we’ve come a long way in our grocery store offerings. Also, those buttons, crimini and portabellas are more interesting than you may think; but that’s a topic for another time.

Edible mushrooms are loaded with nutrients.

Dried mushrooms are 10-40 percent bioavailable protein and contain all nine essential amino acids. Mushrooms also provide multiple B vitamins. Some contain significant levels of vitamin B12, such as those tasties: chanterelles and black trumpet mushrooms. Mushrooms are a good source of vitamin D, even more so if you expose them to sunlight (similar to our need for sunlight to synthesize this vitamin). Add on the potassium, selenium, zinc and copper found in mushrooms, and you’ve got yourself a pretty solid meal.

Medicinally speaking, all edible mushrooms support healthy immune system function. Many benefit the cardiovascular system, liver and kidneys. Edible mushrooms also have anti-microbial effects against bacteria, viruses and other fungi. (Contrary to popular belief, mushrooms are fine on a “candida diet” and may be helpful if candida overgrowth is actually the problem.)

(With respect to immunity and anti-viral effects, obviously a hot topic currently, the current pandemic presents an unusual immunological picture in which the life-threatening manifestation of the disease is from immune system over-reactivity that causes severe inflammation. So it’s unclear – to me, at least – how these mushrooms effect the immune system apply when taken in “medicinal” doses.

Many mushrooms may either stimulate or suppress inflammatory responses, depending on the circumstances. So if you’re asking whether the mushrooms here may be useful in the current pandemic, my answer is “I don’t know.”)

Here are just a few of the tasty, health-promoting mushrooms you may find at our local markets…

• Lion’s Mane – The scientific name of this lovely white mushroom is Hericium erinaceus, meaning, redun-

dantly enough, “hedgehog hedgehog.” The mushroom does, indeed, look like an albino hedgehog. Or in some cases, like a lion’s mane or maybe a bunch of icicles stuck together. The flavor of this mushroom has been compared to lobster, crab and mild seafood. Even if you’re not interested in the medicinal qualities, it’s a delicacy.

Of the multiple ways lion’s mane may benefit our health, brain health is one of the most active areas of research. Small, double-blind, placebo-controlled trials have revealed improvement in mild cognitive impairment, depression and anxiety. Preclinical studies are uncovering the interesting ways in which lion’s mane interacts with our nervous system. For example, lion’s mane components can stimulate nerve regeneration in experimental conditions; though whether this happens in people remains to be seen.

Still, these are some promising results.

• Oyster Mushroom – Unlike lion’s mane, oyster mushrooms grow in Colorado. Truth be told, I’ve only found them a handful of times here in the San Juans, but I have friends here who’ve had better luck. Not to worry, though: oyster mushrooms are commonly found at the grocery store, where you might find sake oyster mushrooms, Pleurotus ostreatus, and maybe even king oyster mushrooms, Pleurotus eryngii, aka “king trumpet”). oyster mushrooms are much more aromatic, but the tamed ones are tasty enough. In the French countryside, oyster mushrooms are esteemed and folks will water their local “oyster logs” to encourage growth.

Herbalists who work with mushrooms often use oyster mushrooms for lung support. Such traditional usage is being backed up by research. For example, clinical trials have shown reduced incidence of respiratory tract infections in children and adults given an oyster mushroom syrup. Oyster mushrooms have many other uses that date back centuries, some of which are also under investigation by the geeks in white coats. (I can say that since I used to be one of them.)

• Maitake – Maitake means “dancing mushroom” in Japan. It’s also known as “hen of the woods.” You won’t find maitake roaming wild in the San Juans, but it shows up in grocery stores here from time to time. The scientific name is Grifola frondosa (“frondosa” means “leafy.”) I’ve seen three different meanings ascribed to “grifola” but won’t dive into that.

This delicious and strong-flavored mushroom has a wide range of traditional uses. One of the better-known uses in the world of herbalism is for promoting healthy blood sugar and insulin regulation. Preclinical studies point to a multitude of ways maitake may do this. A related finding suggests maitake may help in cases of infertility associated with insulin resistance, specifically, in polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS). A commercial maitake extract may have improved ovulation rates in women with PCOS, even those who failed the standard treatment with clomiphene citrate (Clomid). I say “may have” because the study had some flaws. But the results are, nevertheless, encouraging.

A note on cooking mushrooms: If you say “yuck” to eating mushrooms, you may not have experienced dry sauteed mushrooms. Dry sauteeing is a way of removing the water from mushrooms during cooking, without them becoming rubbery. Cut your mushrooms into slices about ¼-inch thick and place a single layer in a pre-heated pan on medium. Sprinkle with a little salt. As they shrink, flip them once. As they start to brown, push them to the side of the pan and repeat the process to cook all the mushrooms. Once they’ve all been dry sauteed, add your favorite fat (butter, ghee, olive oil …), some pepper and whatever else floats your boat.

Note that mushrooms in the diet are generally fine for folks on prescription medications, but check with your doctor or pharmacist before combining concentrated mushroom teas or other types of extract with medications.

The week the music died

or more than 12 years, I’ve written “Top Shelf” on a weekly basis as a column about the local music scene and nightlife. I also drift into sports, pop culture and political territory from time to time. And, on far too many occasions, I’ve paid homage to a family member or friend who has passed, like my son, brother, mother and festival friend.

Live music and nightlife are shut down. Gatherings of more than 10 people are forbidden. How long will this last? Two weeks?

Two months? A year? The coronavirus has not sent me its touring itinerary yet. Just like with Milli Vanilli in 1988, we don’t know how long we’ll have to endure.

In last week’s column, I reported on the huge slate of upcoming concerts and festivals in the Four Corners region.

It was a big week – Leftover Salmon, Dirtwire, the Durango Celtic Festival and much more.

But I felt irresponsible publicizing these events.

I was an early adaptor to the concept of quarantining. After all, as a survivor of Marfan Syndrome and the corresponding aortic aneurism, I’ve milked nearly seven extra years out of life since receiving an artificial heart valve. Those seven years have been good and bad – just like life, essentially. I survive on a daily regimen of five pills to keep my blood levels thin enough so as not to clog my valve, and thick enough to prevent internal bleeding. I’ve done all of this while trying to live my life much as before. Let’s face it – this was unrealistic. I can’t hike up mountain creeks like I used to. I can’t drink beer like I used to. Shooting baskets in the gym or the driveway with my son taxes my back, my knees and my heart.

I’ve learned that smaller doses get me by. I used to be capable of downing a 12-pack in one sitting around the campfire. Today, most nights – hell, most weeks – see no alcohol. A 12-pack usually lasts a month or more.

Marfan’s is a bitch. It’s a genetic disorder that breaks down connective tissue. Bad backs, scoliosis, joint problems, poor vision and, ultimately, aortic aneurisms, are common traits. Fewer than 20,000 cases arise in the United States each year. There are treatments, but no cure. The worst is that those with Marfan’s have a 50 percent chance of passing the gene on to their children. My mom had it, and it ultimately claimed her life when she was 67. Mom passed it on to me, my sister, Stephanie, and my little brother, Billy. I had my aneurism when I was 44. Billy was 32, and not so fortunate. He died on the surgical table after suffering his aneurism.

Billy had no children. Stephanie has a 13-year-old daughter, Emma, who inherited the gene. So did my 13-year-old son, Otto.

Rosie, thankfully, did not. Baby Gus who died when he was fiveand-a-half months old? We don’t know. He died of a rare virus.

So call me paranoid when something like COVID-19 rears its ugly head. People die from rare diseases. I know – I’ve buried or spread the ashes of three of them. I’ll be making the rarest of ap-

pearances outside my house for the foreseeable future. Every time Shelly has to go to the store or run an errand, she risks bringing back the virus and exposing me. Every time the kids want to ride their bikes to the park to play and then come into contact with another kid, it risks exposure.

Last week alone may have sealed my fate. I work in a small office with just 11 people. But several of those people traveled on vacations or business trips, unaware or insensitive to the fact that they might contribute to the spread. I was one of them. In midFebruary, I took Otto and my best buddy, Steve, to the NHL Stadium Series in Colorado Springs. At this point, the outbreak was limited to a cruise ship and was just reaching a senior center in Washington state.

Business and life went on as usual. Last week, KSUT hosted its annual spring membership drive. As the station’s development director, I was front and center each day, from the wee morning hours until long past sunset each day. KSUT is located in Ignacio and has very few visitors each day. During membership drive, though, we welcome dozens of guests, volunteers and bands to the studios for interviews, performances and more.

I’d guess that somewhere between 50 and 75 folks came through our doors.

We posted signs saying this was a handshake-free zone, but the signs did no good. Most of our guests were young people who think they’re invincible. They often demanded handshakes or hugs. I resisted most, but not all. By week’s end, my co-workers shared my paranoia as the news kept coming.

The big eye-opener was when Gov. Jared Polis made the decision to shut down Colorado’s ski areas in the middle of spring break. The outcry from some of my friends was appalling, as they went on social media rants. In Colorado, the biggest outbreaks have happened in resort communities like Aspen, Vail, Gunnison and Summit County. Think about it – world class ski resorts attract visitors from around the world. They become miniature petri dishes with limited resources for medical emergencies.

Just as these areas were seeing outbreaks, many of my festival friends were trekking up to Telluride to see the Infamous Stringdusters. Those same friends drove back to Durango and saw Leftover Salmon last week. I’m not saying that they brought coronavirus with them. I’m just saying that we’ve all made decisions in the past month to travel, to embrace and to live our lives that may end up with a hidden fee that reveals itself in the next few weeks.

Meanwhile, my employer, KSUT, has pulled the plug on our next two concerts (Old Salt Union on April 2 and Sierra Ferrell on April 13). Our Pagosa Folk’n Bluegrass Festival is in jeopardy. We haven’t announced our big July 5 outdoor concert yet. We live in fear, but we must embrace hope. And common sense.

AskRachel Interesting fact: Derek Thompson, writing at The Atlantic, calls the presidential administration’s coronavirus efforts “a shambolic bonanza of incompetence,” and that is now my favorite five-word descriptor in the history of coronavirus.

Dear Rachel, I am in my mid-50s and otherwise healthy. Next week, I am supposed to go to my much younger half-brother’s wedding in Miami. I must admit I am a little leery of flying right now, given coronavirus concerns. But this is the kicker: my brother and his betrothed met on a cruise ship, where they both work, and many of the weddings guests are cruise ship employees. I am not particularly close to my brother but I do feel bad because most of the rest of the family has already bailed. Am I giving into the panic by not going, or am I flying in the face of red flags if I go?

– Please help, Holding Pattern Dear Guest, Between you sending this letter and my answering it, the question feels wildly quaint. There’s no way you should get on that airplane. There’s no way you should get within coughing distance of a cruise ship. And there’s no way no how you should take a +1, because remaining six feet apart negates the entire purpose of taking +1s to weddings.
