Sprinter vans eat your heart out. This weekend, the Mobile Earth Space Observatory (MESO for short) is deploying to Durango. This roving “science center on wheels,” complete with a retractable roof for star-viewing, is setting up camp May 18-20 at the Powerhouse Science Center.

Adults and kids of all ages are invited to check out the mobile classroom and participate in a variety of STEM-based activities using the MESO’s high-powered optics and infrared cameras, among other gadgetry. Specifically, local fledgling scientists will be able to study watershed health and water conservation in the Four Corners as well as heat and light in space. There will also be a telescope star-viewing party (skies willing) the evening of Sun., May 19. All events are free.

According to owner Adam Zimmerli, a music promoter from Denver, in its heyday, The Black Monarch – originally known as The Monarch – served as a casino, saloon and brothel. And to add to the Western lore, it was also said to be haunted by the ghost of a miner killed there in a gunfight.

However, as is often the case, tragedy stuck in 1899, when a fire burned The Monarch to the ground. The hotel soon rose again from the ashes, as did the ghosts. According to legend, those working the hotel bar have reported strange sights. In recent years, multiple parties have woken in the night to hear a woman laughing and men shouting at each other, only to find the next morning they were in the hotel alone.

And in case all this isn’t enough to send guests scurrying for their bags (just don’t go for the elevator!), the rooms are theme after serial killers Elizabeth Bathory and H.H. Holmes. For extra creep factor, the interior is packed with goth curiosities, taxidermy, oddities and trinkets.

LaVidaLocal Gearheads I just wrapped up my first-ever tour as a performing musician, and I am here to tell you that the lifestyle is every bit as sexy, glamorous, and dramatic as you imagine dreaming it is. Groupies. Parties spilling into hotel hallways. Massive amounts of free drugs. Booze-fueled hazes. Mudsharks.

Free sandwiches.

Of course, I did not get to partake in any of that side of the lifestyle, because I spent all 10 days of the tour unloading and re-loading the Subaru.

No one ever told me when I was 15 and rocking out in my bedroom to songs that didn’t have Bm chords in them that becoming a star might start off with a lot of manual labor. I would have gone into some less-demanding field, like testing prototype jackhammers, had I any inkling that troubadours clock more physical exertion than Crossfitters. I am an artist for a reason, and that reason is that the heaviest lifting I do on a regular basis is asking the pet store clerk to help me with a bag of dog food.

So while I had rehearsed my songs for entire days ahead of the tour, and my bandmate’s songs even less, I had not so much as stretched before she pulled up to the house to load up.

I packed light for this tour. Oxygen on Embers is an alt-folk duo, so we require nothing fancy. No lights, no fog machine, minimal pyrotechnics. It was just me and my guitar. And my other guitar. Two amps, guitar stands, mic stand, cables, extension cords. Harmonicas, of course. Small suitcase, hanging clothes, change of shoes, rain jacket. Assorted hats. Cooler of snacks. Bag of food. Box of band merch. I’m not bragging, but I have to say, my packing was as stripped-down as our sound.

But my bandmate – let’s call her Carson, because why should she remain anonymous here – had the gall to pack her own instruments, and her own stands and cables, and her own clothes and changes of clothes, AND – something I would never once have considered bringing on tour myself – her purse.

By the time we Grinched every last guitar string into the back and middle and front of the car, I had no choice but to travel as a solo act.

Kidding! I’m not Art Garfunkel, but I knew I was better off performing with Carson, because she booked all our shows and knew where we were

going and when we needed to be there.

She also booked our hotels and Airbnbs and spare rooms along the tour route. Apparently, she did not consider how much she was packing, because she booked places with stairs.

I for one anticipated spending these 10 days as one with the music, but instead, I spent these days as a pack mule, schlepping crates and boxes and bags up and down stairs, unloading to keep gear out of the hot car, loading to take gear to a gig, unloading to use the gear at a gig, loading to take the gear back to the room, unloading to keep the gear out of a cold car, and contemplating leaving the gear on a street corner for someone to sell for meth money.

And to make matters worse, the first place we stayed, in a small New Mexico town, came with a memory foam mattress. The place did not advertise a memory foam mattress, because if it did, no one would book it and someone would burn it to the ground. I cannot understand the allure of the memory foam mattress. It tacos you in your sleep, and if you are lucky enough to emerge from it in the morning, you feel worse than if you had slept in the car atop all your amplifiers.

That first night, though, I had my most rock-and-roll moment of the entire tour. I woke up in the night in the bathroom, blood dripping from my eyebrow, no idea what had just happened and highly satisfied with the scab I was likely to sport.

I had yet to stumble upon any groupies with high-grade dope, so I don’t know if my heavy-metal sleepwalking was caused by unloading all the gear, or the memory foam mattress, or my general badassery. It taught me, though, that I did not need any assistance to have a mind- and life-altering experience on this tour. I’d had it already, before playing a single show. I felt fortunate to be alive, and free to go on stage and share myself through song. Nothing that could happen to me on stage could be worse than nearly dying next to a toilet.

I survived it all, and more than that, I grew inside in the process. Now that I’m home, and that trauma has worn off, I’m already game to go on the next tour. This time, maybe that nice clerk from the pet store wants to be our roadie.

Chipping at Trump’s gilded facade To the editor, Dennis Pierce’s bit of petty ridicule aimed at your excellent political cartoonist Shan Wells (5/2/19) reflects a sad reality I’ve noticed amongst Trump lovers. All their talking points are built upon fabricating ridicule and dismissal by reframing their self-made enemies into straw men for easy burning. But, it provides me with an opportunity to explain the Trump Thing from this liberal’s perspective.

My pal believes liberals are just over the top with their “hatred” for Trump. Don’t suppose he’d ever let himself imagine that it’s what Trump stands for that’s our problem? Not that there isn’t plenty about the person himself to turn the stomach of any freedom-loving rationalist.

Let’s consider the pre-election decades. First we saw a shameless, lying self-promoting narcissist. A man-child whose self-esteem was so rotten he needed a gold-plated apartment and toilet to salve his ego. But it wasn’t enough. He needs everyone to know about it.

He was all Me First and he couldn’t care less about anything but his self-interest. Trump’s promises and contracts were made to be broken, he ran businesses into the ground, and he turned bankruptcy into a braggadocious filled profit driver. He never showed showing scruples or empathy toward the honest workers he was robbing out of their fair pay – all the while obsessing over getting his face into the papers.

Then the election years. Trump builds his political base upon hatred and an obvious lie – one that’s about as dirty, underhanded, racist and ruthlessly malicious as it gets – denying President Obama’s citizenship, though the physical proof of Obama’s birth in Hawaii is overwhelming to all who’ve investigated. Add to that he knows little to nothing about our government, except that he despises it.

Then listening to Trump talk, it’s nothing but ram-

bling lines of nonsense. Telling his audience what they want to hear, regardless of the actual reality surrounding the issues. Turns out he lies incessantly, even about stuff he doesn’t need to lie about. But Trumpsters love him

and that he’s a lie factory matters not a wit. Why? They like what they hear? Me First, then fear and hatred toward all others. Is that it?

that phoniness recognizable by the faithful? Why don’t they care? Me thinks because ethics, morality, honesty actually doesn’t mean squat to them! Dreams of personal prosperity, that’s the key to their Evangelical faith! Now, Trump’s Me First has them cheering on the transformation of Our America into Their Theocracy.

Then the money and the Russians. Turns out Trump lost a billion dollars during the rah rah ’80s and ’90s, when everyone else with money was making more of it. Still his line of credit seems endless. Where does that come from? Especially after he became persona non-gratis at all the New York banks? Yeah, we know, it came from DeutscheBank. The same DeutscheBank that got busted for that huge Russian money-laundering scheme. Look it up.

From all Trump says and does, it’s obvious he despises American principles of pluralism, democracy, fair play, three branch balance of power, honesty and constructive debate. Me First seems as far as his vision goes.

A budding totalitarian who makes mortal enemies out of anyone who disagrees with him. He is absolutely selfcertain but educationally and historically about as stupid as they come. A text book example of Dunning-Kruger if there ever was. It’s all about facade.

Well OK, that’s going too far, there is substance to Trump – his predatory skills and passion for no-holds barred dirty fighting. Is that why the Christian right worships Trump? Oh and that little matter of trusting and believing in Russia’s Putin more than the USA’s national security apparatus? Doesn’t bother them in the least? Why? There’s more, but do you care?

Stopping the cycle of loss, suicide To the editor, My heart is heavy after the suicides by Parkland teens, just one year after the school shooting that killed 17 of their classmates. I am sure I am not alone. Unfor-

tunately, no community is untouched by the loss of young lives.

We know that bereaved teens are at a three times higher risk for suicide, and this proves true clinically in my office each week. We also know that this risk is much larger for those who have lost loved ones to death by suicide; I am unable to find any research on suicide risk after mass homicide.

As a therapist who specializes in grief, loss and trauma, I am intimately aware of the nuances of suicidal ideation during the grief process. Most of my bereaved clients flirt with the possibility of ending their own lives at some time. My job is to provide a safe place and trusted relationship to process the frightening aspects of both grief and trauma in addition to sadness, anger, denial and other more frequently talked about “grief emotions.”

Yet this ideation reaches far beyond bereaved teens. Today’s young people call themselves the “massacre generation,” “mass shooting generation” and “Columbine generation,” and they feel directly under threat either from others or themselves.

The brave and thoughtful young people who do seek therapy seem to bear the weight of a generation who lives with the very real fear that their lives may be in danger or cut short. For some, this sense of imminent threat and global grief creates a response in activism, but for many, particularly those without strong support systems, it creates a sense of nihilism. As Dr. Hannah Schell states in her article for Vocation Matters (2019), “When the future looks bleak and your options seem severely curtailed, the view that nothing really matters can take hold. Why bother planning for a future that may not come?”

This sense of hopelessness magnifies during times of grief and often manifests in increased substance use, selfharm and suicidal ideation. Isolating forms of entertainment become appealing, such as obsessive gaming or binge-watching. It also thwarts long-range planning, such as thinking of college, graduate school or a long-term ca-

reer or relationship.

So here in Southwest Colorado and the Four Corners, what can be done to help alleviate the suffering of these young people? More importantly, what is being done?

After a dramatic rise in youth and teen deaths by suicide in both La Plata and Montezuma counties, the Grief Center of Southwest Colorado has been expanding its services. These include crisis response interventions after the death of students or school staff, grief groups at participating schools, and grief, trauma and resiliency sessions for teachers and school counselors. After the school shootings in Aztec in December 2017, The Grief Center provided immediate support and aftercare through local youth service organizations including the Boys and Girls Clubs in both Aztec and Farmington.

As valuable as the immediate interventions are, these services are generally requested for the first few days or weeks after a traumatic loss; we have a short but important climb in recognizing as a community that the needs of the bereaved go far beyond this timeline. Often the reality of the loss and the impending hopelessness do not make themselves apparent until the survivor has been suffering with his or her loss for a year or two.

Of note, The Grief Center of Southwest Colorado is part of the ongoing effort to lower the occurrence of deaths to both suicide and substance use in our communities, speaking broadly to the fact that post-vention bereavement counseling is also prevention.

Sadly, these completed suicides by the two bereaved Parkland teens are not really a surprise. We owe it to this generation, which I would like to see dubbed the “resilient generation,” to offer deeper and longer support after loss.

ne of the taglines making the rounds among the 20plus politicians running for the Democratic presidential nomination is “Medicare for All.” But with all the hype and hyperbole common to campaign speak, many Americans aren’t sure exactly what it means.

Well, there’s one person in Durango who wants to get down to the brass tacks.

Guinn Unger, who’s worked on healthcare issues in Southwest Colorado for years as co-chair of Indivisible Durango’s Healthcare & Senior Issues committee and regional coordinator for the ColoradoCare Amendment 69 campaign in 2016, is on a mission to trudge through the talking points and lay out the facts.

With this in mind, he plans to make his case and discuss

that covers everyone. It doesn’t have to be a single-payer or government-run system. It’s not socialized medicine or even mandated coverage. It simply means that everyone – regardless of age, gender, religion or any other factor – is covered. That’s what makes it universal.

Unger also untangles the Affordable Care Act (ACA), Medicaid, the current Medicare system, individual and group insurance, and the American Health Care Act, which was passed in recent years in an attempt to replace the ACA. Next on the menu is to highlight some of the hiccups with the current health insurance market. “What we’re doing now is not working,” he explained.

According to his research, Unger said, 23 million Americans are still without health insurance today and an additional 40 million are underinsured, which means those 4

people have high deductibles or gaps in coverage.

In spite of these issues, the United States, he added, spends almost double what other developed countries spend per person on healthcare needs. He argues this isn’t because those people receive better care, it’s only because they are charged twice as much.

“The health insurance companies we have now are driven by profits,” Unger explained.

From inflated drug prices to exorbitant salaries for a growing number of administrators, much of what the U.S. spends on healthcare doesn’t actually go toward the patient.

Currently, two Medicare for All bills have been introduced in the U.S. Congress – one by Rep. Pramila Jayapal, D-Wash., and another, which is similar to those proposed in previous years, by Sen. Bernie Sanders, D-Vt. 4 “I like the benefits in both bills,” Unger said. “But, what’s not in there is how it’s going to be paid for.”

And, that’s the most common question he gets asked, “How are we going to pay for this?”

Unger’s answer is shifting the payments.

For example, if income taxes are raised to cover the costs of a Medicare for All plan, the people paying those taxes would no longer be paying the out-of-pocket costs for monthly premiums and doctor’s visits. So, the funds would shift from paying a monthly premium to paying additional income taxes.

Unger believes, over the first 10 years of the plan, the amount people are paying for healthcare today would actually go down.

As part of his presentation, Unger, who’s also a member of Healthcare Durango, a group of locals interested in reforming the healthcare system, explains that the American people currently spend more than $3.2 trillion on healthcare every year. In fact, the United States invests almost

These countries typically employ one of two systems – government-run healthcare, which is how it works in Great Britain; and, a private insurance system that’s both mandated and regulated by the government, which is what’s happening in Germany.

Unger said in a government-run system, the government owns and operates everything, including hospitals, clinics, equipment and more. This type of system wouldn’t work well in the United States, he added, because it would require completely upending the current one. He doesn’t believe Americans would support such a

the care they need. Similarly, a Medicare for All plan would not mean the government is going to be in control of a patient’s healthcare decisions.

“The doctors decide what it is that you need,” he explained. “And the government simply pays for it.”

Unger said Medicare for All is not a form of socialized medicine – a label he tackles in his presentation – with long waiting lines or rationed care. “That’s a total myth,” he added.

The goal of his presentation is not to toss out talking points or party lines, Unger explained, saying this is not a political issue. He plans to present the data and talk about healthcare in a non-partisan way.

“We’re trying to reach out to everyone,” he said, “and just point out the facts.” n

MountainTownNews Questions loom about baby switcheroo KETCHUM, Idaho – In 2002, Thomas Johnson Jr. retired as the long-time fire chief in Ketchum. Only recently did the 77-year-old learn that he wasn’t really Thomas Johnson but instead Herbert Benjamin Reibman.

By whatever name, he was born on Dec. 7, 1941, the day that Pearl Harbor was bombed, drawing the United States head-first into World War II. This was in a hospital in Michigan, shortly after the news arrived.

A hospital employee switched two newborn infants, and the parents never learned of the mistake. Neither did the other man, who was actually a Johnson but went through life thinking he was Herbert Reibman. He died in the 1990s.

All of this was reported by a newspaper in Challis, Idaho, and re-reported by the Idaho Mountain Express. Plus, CBS Sunday Morning recorded the meeting in Phoenix of the fire chief with his biological siblings.

His biological family was of Lithuanian-Jewish and French-Canadian ancestry. As a Johnson, he went through life thinking he was Irish-American.

A logical question, left unanswered in this reporting, is whether Johnson will become Reibman?

But so far, at least on the surface, it looks like a splendid success.

Five of the eight new residents have jobs at the Fairmont Chateau Whistler, where they work in housekeeping. They live in staff housing.

One of the refugees, 30-year-old Murhaf Ghaibour spent years living in Lebanon, sometimes illegally, while awaiting resettlement.

He says he likes the international makeup of the staff housing and, for that matter, the resort altogether.

Two of his roommates are from England and one from India.

“So I don’t seem like a stranger,” he explained. “Everyone came from someplace else, so I don’t feel like – how to say?—like I’m in special conditions. I just feel like I’m like everyone here.”

Resort crystals intended to aid healing JACKSON, Wyo. – Two crystals can be found at the Jackson Hole Mountain Resort, an attempt to produce healing and protectiveness at the resort. They were placed there last winter indirectly because of the retirement of Jerry Blann, the long-term chief executive of the ski area.

“We named a (run) after him, Jerry’s Way, but that got me thinking: what would I want as my legacy on the mountain?” Connie Kemmerer, the resort’s co-owner, told the Jackson Hole News&Guide.

About the same time, she was introduced to Marta Barreras, a Hawaii-based feng shui master who had worked since 2015 with Rob Deslauriers. Deslauriers is a ski mountaineer of note (he has skied from the summit of Mount Everest) and a real estate agent in Jackson Hole, a valley frequented by an uncommon number of billionaires. He also is a crystal user.

One thing led to another and ultimately a smoky quartz, a stone believed to help with letting go, was placed at Solitude Station, a twominute ride up the gondola from the base. The larger crystal, a 3,000pound chunk of milky white quartz mined in Brazil, was located at the base in Teton Village. It is supposed to help relieve distress.

Kathie Chandler, who uses crystals in a holistic healing practice at Wilson, a hamlet near the ski area, tells the News&Guide that she believes she has detected a different energy in Teton Village since the crystals were placed there. “They’re intensely powerful and intensely huge.”

New power line must go underground

KETCHUM, Idaho – Blaine County, which includes Sun Valley and Ketchum, is telling an electricity utility that it can build a redundant transmission line along the state highway leading to the resort community only if the transmission line is buried. This

would add $34.5 million to the cost.

Where would that money come from? The Idaho Mountain Express identifies a number of possible sources, but even in a valley as well-heeled as Ketchum and Sun Valley, the price tag seems to be causing eyelashes to bat.

Colorado has a parallel issue about undergrounding and cost in a case near Vail. There, Holy Cross Energy, the local electrical cooperative, needs to build a new transmission line through Minturn and to a substation at Gilman, an old mining camp. Holy Cross has agreed to underground the line through much of Minturn, but the question remains of just how much. Some of the line will cross U.S. Forest Service property.

Sorting out electrical resilience after fire BASALT – Brain-storming has begun in Aspen and the Roaring Fork Valley after a 12,500-acre fire that nearly caused Snowmass Village, portions of Aspen, and all the surrounding areas to lose electricity on the July Fourth weekend last year.

The Lake Christine Fire had taken out three transmission lines, and flames were licking up a wooden pole of the fourth and final transmission line near Basalt when firefighters arrived.

Holy Cross Energy, the primary electrical co-operative, has partnered with Rocky Mountain Institute to explore how to make the Aspen area more resilient not just in the event of wildfire but in many situations.

Consider gas pumps, which require electricity to operate.

Could dedicated solar and battery storage be used to provide backup power, allowing customers to continue to pump gas during an outage.

Microgrids represent another opportunity. They would allow each community or neighborhood to retain power independently in the case of a grid power outage. The project will likely focus on designing a pilot microgrid in a small region that already contains generating assets, such as near a solar farm. For example, a solar farm is proposed in the Woody Creek area east of Aspen, where the writer Hunter Thompson used to hang out.

In a post, the Rocky Mountain Institute pointed out that resilience is not just about emergency preparedness, but also should take into account a range of considerations from blue sky to blacksky days. This core concept was reflected in many of the ideas that were developed at a workshop conducted in early April.

Many first responders and community organizations have diesel or natural gas backup generators. This provides an effective and simple way of ensuring the lights stay on, but most stakeholders reported they only get used about 30 minutes in a typical year. Solar coupled with storage could be used year round, not just for emergencies.

Another example of resiliency, according to RMI, is improved energy efficiency. Making buildings more efficient lessens the electricity needed to keep them up and running during an emergency or outage.

This was the first principle espoused by RMI founder Amory Lovins beginning after the Arab oil embargoes of the 1970s. He founded RMI in the service territory of Holy Cross Energy, at Old Snowmass. RMI offices several years ago were moved to a state-ofthe-art, energy-efficient building in Basalt.

Whistler revises wildfire evacuation plan WHISTLER, B.C. – Temperatures soared in British Columbia last week, scuttling old records and sparking worries of lightning, cigarette butts and whatever else might start a forest fire.

In Whistler, municipal officials issued a warning that the fire danger was expected to climb to “extreme.” It was a new reminder to homeowners to move combustibles at least 10 meters away from homes and take other measures to retard wildfire.

The community has been working on revising its evacuation plan, not just for wildfire, although that is the most immediate concern. Since 2014 the community has had what the emergency planning coordinator described as a “fairly robust” plan.

But that plan did not contemplate need for a mass evacuation.

The new plan does. On a peak summer day, nearly 49,000 people would have to be evacuated, of whom 17,000 would be without cars. On peak winter days, Whistler has 53,000 people. Of them, almost 22,000 would be without cars.

t may seem hard to believe that a short four years ago, Durango was devoid of resources and support for LGBTQ kids. Even more remarkable, perhaps, is that in that time, the Four Corners Rainbow Youth Center has grown from the seeds of two high school counselors to a safe and nonjudgmental haven for local gay, bisexual, transgender, queer and questioning youth, as well as their families and allies.

This past school year, the 4CRYC served some 60 kids and facilitated Gender and Sexuality Alliance clubs at Durango High School as well as Escalante, Miller and Mountain middle schools. In addition, the center expanded its offering from 13-18-year-olds to the younger set, ages 5-12; added parent support groups; and provided three days of programming, more than ever before. But most importantly, instead of the shared space

“The youth can just own it, that’s what’s so brilliant,” 4CRYC Director Jennifer Stucka said. And to put their own stamp on it, the kids have begun paint-

ing a mural (with the landlord’s blessing) on the center’s interior wall. “It’s really coming together well,” Stucka said.

But things for Durango’s rainbow kids weren’t always so bright. In 2014, Stucka, a licensed social worker who was working at Durango High’s school-based health center, was shocked to learn there were no resources for LGBTQ students. “I had moved here from Denver and was like, ‘What do you mean there are no services?’” she recalled.

Stucka put her head together with school counselor Sarah St. John, and later, counselor Rowan Blaisdale.

The three conducted focus groups and the Rainbow Youth Center was born from those groups in 2015.

“The consensus was unanimous. The students said, ‘We need a safe place outside of school to face these issues other kids don’t face,’” she said. “Our mission was to help create a better culture of safety.” 4

The center is supported through grants, private and corporate donations, Stucka said, which helps pay for her 22-hourweek salary as well as one staff member. It also hosts two fund-raisers a year, of which the spring benefit is its biggest. Everything else comes from a generous core of volunteers.

She said the center would not have gotten where it is today without these dedicated folks, who provide support as well as relate their different perspectives and experiences to the youth. “We really help provide a foundation,” she said.

The grapes of wrap

n the small kitchen of a pale green trailer adorned with American flags, a pot of dolmas rested on a stovetop, swaddled in towels. My dolma instructor, who made them, came to the U.S. with her family six years ago from Mosul, Iraq. I had eaten dolmas before, or so I thought.

When I first tried hers, it felt like an awakening.

“Dolma” is a busy word. It comes from the Turkish dolmak, which means “to fill.”

It’s an appropriately general name, given a wide dolma diaspora that includes sweet, sour and salty incarnations. Best known are the Mediterranean-style grape leaves filled with plain, lemony rice, but the word “dolma” can also refer to a nut-filled apple in northern India, or a bulgur-stuffed eggplant in Turkey.

In spite of this diversity, somehow the name itself has remained unchanged, from Crete to Tbilisi. As long as something is filled with something, it’s a dolma.

My dolma instructor had shown me the Mosulian way to prepare the rice, fill the dolmas and cook them. Now it was time for the grand finale. She placed a metal platter atop the dolma pot, upside down so the dolmas would sit on the platter right-side-up when it was inverted. With one hand below the pot and the other pressing down on the platter, she lifted everything above her head, deftly flipped the whole assembly, and placed it gently on the table, like a pool shark racking up cue balls in 3D. She gave the pot a quick spin left and right, slapping it with a few beats in between, and lifted it, revealing a perfectly round tower of dolma.

Stuffed grape leaves formed the bulk of the structure, but it also contained sweet peppers, rolled cabbage and onions, hollowed out zucchini, and feisty jalapenos, all filled with spicy tomato rice and capped with caramelized garlic, cauliflower and carrots.

Her daughter translated and discussed this upper layer of browned goodness, which she referred to simply as “bottom.” Composed of any number of vegetables or meats, it cooks in the lemony juices of the dolma pot and then migrates to the top at serving time.

the dolma tower. “That one is cute,” she said.

My dolma instructor shook the tower of dolma, and it collapsed into a steaming heap of color and flavor. The rice was cooked, yet on the dry side. The plump dolma glistened, bursting with a tangy, sour flavor that was spicy but smooth, with no single element jumping out as dominant.

Making dolmas that an Iraqi will respect is hard. If you

don’t use the right amount of water, or pack them correctly in the pot, or cook them properly, the shape will crumble and scatter. Worse, the dolma can be soggy, with tough, fibrous grape leaves. Maybe they fall apart and scatter rice everywhere, and the bottom can blacken beyond recognition. But I’d take my worst attempt at an Iraqi dolma over any other dolma I’d eaten before my apprenticeship. Those green finger clones in the deli case, little more than starchy mush wrapped in frail grape leaves, are empty calories to me now.

Iraqi dolmas usually have tomato sauce mixed in with the rice. This Mosul-style recipe is distinct in its use of mint instead of the parsley that’s more common in Iraq.

But the real secret, the daughter says, “is how we balance the salt, sour and water.”

I watched them make dolmas in front of me and took copious notes, and still it took me many attempts to get it right in my dolma pot, on my stove, with my brand of rice. But it’s worth the effort. The rich and satisfying rewards of this Old World treat never get old.

The actual rolling and stuffing of the grape leaves and

veggies is difficult to convey in words alone. There are videos and tutorials to be found online for each type of veggie you could make into a Musulian dolma.

Once you get the hang of filling vegetables with Iraqi dolma rice, you will be ready to make them with almost anything your garden can grow. Grape leaves will always be the anchor of my dolma pot, the mortar that holds the shape together. But mixing in an assortment of stuffed veggies, and playing around with the bottom/top, add diversity and balance to the dolma pot.

Mosulian Dolmas Serves 10 ½ cup grated potato ½ cup grated carrot ½ cup thinly sliced onion 2 cloves garlic, minced 3 cups white rice 6 teaspoons dried mint 2 tsp salt 2 tsp pepper 1 tsp paprika 1 tsp hot chile powder, like Allepo or Cayenne 1 tsp cinnamon 1 can tomato sauce A cup or so of bottom ingredients, either vegetables, meat or some combination 1 cup lemon juice 1 cup olive oil Fry the potato, carrot, onion and garlic in 3 tablespoons olive oil on medium heat until everything is shriveled and golden. Set aside.

Rinse the rice in a bowl by adding water, swishing it around, draining, and repeating until the water stays clear. Drain.

Add 1 teaspoon of salt, all of the dried spices, the fried veggies and the tomato sauce to the rice. Mix well.

Place bottom ingredients loosely about the bottom of the pot. Fill the dolmas – easier said than done – and stack them in the pot, interlocking the pieces so as to help hold the structure together.

When the dolmas are filled, add a teaspoon of salt to the pot, followed by the lemon juice, the rest of the olive oil and about ½ cup of water, or until the water level is about an inch beneath the top of the dolmas.

Cook on medium for about 45-60 minutes, watching for when the water disappears, and smelling for the line between browned and burned. Swaddle with towels on the stove, and let it rest for 20 minutes. Invert and serve. n

The last dirtbag: Mehall releases final book in series What: The Desert book release party Who: Writer and climber extraordinaire Luke Mehall When: 6:30 p.m., Thurs., May 16 Where: Pine Needle Dry Goods (in conjunction with Maria’s Bookshop), 858 Main Ave. Twenty years ago as an undergrad at Western State College, Luke Mehall stumbled upon the glory land of climbing, Indian Creek, Utah.

To say it was his happy place was an understatement. For the next two decades, it would be an area he would return to again and again – an area simply referred to as The Desert.

Mehall, who now calls Durango home (the days of living in his car long past), pays homage to this special place while chronicling his nearly two decades of experience sthere in his latest book, The Desert.

The Desert begins with Mehall’s first trip to The Desert (which he Always Caps, ostensibly as a form of reverence) in 1999 and follows his budding romance with the famed red rock walls. Over the years, it transforms from “just another stop along the way” to a veritable home away from home.

Ultimately, Mehall’s passion for first ascents with his best friends transforms into a passion for the land itself, fostering a desire to protect it in all its natural splendor. As his bond grows, the Bears Ears National Monument is created by the Obama Administration, protecting some 1.3 million acres of Utah red rock wilderness, including Indian Creek. Unfortunately, barely a year later, the monument is dismantled by Trump, leaving much of the landscape surrounding Indian Creek vulnerable to outside threats. While the fate of the monument hinges on several legal challenges, Mehall con-

templates the importance of public lands for the soul of America. He also pulls no punches with his thoughts on Trump’s decision.

The Desert is the fifth – and final – book in Mehall’s socalled “dirt-bag” climbing series, which he describes as a “hybrid of beatnik and dirtbag storytelling” with “a dash of slam poetry, hippie and hiphop.”

“For 20 years, I’ve been writing this specific genre,” he writes. “Though that number of 20 years seems impossible, I checked the calendar, and it’s true. In the blink of an eye, I went from a complete novice that didn’t even know how to make instant oatmeal, to an old, crusty guy who is telling the kids how it used to be.”

But, as he’s quick to point out, “how it used to be” is never how it was. “The golden age always seems to be at hand in rock climbing,” he writes. “The more I climb, the more I realize humans have been rock climbers for eons. First they did it for survival; now we do it for the survival of our souls.”

And while the book will certainly appeal to climbers, The Desert also hits on the universal topics of one man’s simple quest for love, passion, fresh air and an escape from the electronic hyperconnectedness of the modern world.

“Someone, anyone will understand how important the desert is to the consciousness and conscience of the American West,” Chris Kalous, of “The Enormocast” podcast, writes. “Mehall’s generation may be the last to find the desert as we remember: open, wild and free. And while the stories in The Desert are deep, soulful and often inspirational, the subtle keening for a future lost may be what draws the reader the most.”

SCORPIO (Oct. 23-Nov. 21): There’s a certain problem that has in my opinion occupied too much of your attention.

It’s really rather trivial in the big picture of your life, and doesn’t deserve to suck up so much of your attention.
