MORE than one hundred commercial fishers across the Burdekin and beyond have pooled together to fight new regulations which they say will have a devastating impact on the industry – and their own livelihoods.

At the heart of their grievances are State Government proposals to change the existing licence and access rules to a quota system.

Alva Beach-based commercial fisher Neil Green says he hasn’t seen anything like it in 45 years of business.

Now, he is teaming up with the Queensland Seafood Industry Association to take the matter to court.

“It’s a pretty sad situation,” he said.

Meet: James Blundell Hayden Menso

BLN: Can you tell our readers a little bit about yourself and how you got into the music industry?

James: I was born and raised in Stanthorpe, Queensland. I was away at boarding school in Toowoomba and on the Gold Coast from year 5 to year 12. And I always thought my life would be horses, cattle, and sheep, but fate had other plans. A big part of our family life was music, but no one had ever pursued it as a career.

Where do you find inspiration in songwriting?

James: Everyday life... Australia is a very colourful culture, and living on the land brings an endless parade of highs and lows, love and loss. Songwriting is one of the few things in life that benefits from growing older, the more you experience, the more stories there are to tell.

Running for the first time in North Queensland, the program has already seen success in the far north and central parts of the state.

COMMERCIAL FISHERS GUTTED CONTINUED FROM COVER “What’s happening at the moment is the government is changing from commercial licence systems and access fishing to a quota system for that product.

“I’d be looking at spending $70,000 to $80,000 a year buying quota once it’s been allocated, just to catch the same fish I’ve been catching year in and year out.

“Our quota is far less than what we currently catch. It’s like saying to a farmer you can only plant a third of your crop this year.”

Mr Green fishes barramundi, mud crabs and reef fish from his boat off Alva Beach.

He says the new system will make it easier for foreign investors to buy allocated quota to the detriment of local fishers who will be unable to compete amidst new limitations.

“What concerns me is there’s going to be quota issued, particularly in the mud crab industry, which is a big industry in the Burdekin,” he said.

by China, for instance, and overseas investment.”

“It gives us very little chance to obtain the quota when it’s issued to keep fishing, no chance for the younger generation coming on who are trying to build up a business.”

WHEN Elli Boatfield quit her job in childcare to pursue her new business venture, bringing dance cardio fitness to the Burdekin, she had no idea COVID would soon shut her down.

The young fitness instructor has learnt a lot since then and will be celebrating her first year in her business, Eleven Body + Mind in January.

Elli had been dancing since the age of two at her auntie Karen Healy’s dance studio in Home Hill.

By the age of twelve, she was already teaching and had recognised a natural flair for working with children.

Working in the childcare industry in Townsville, Mackay and Brisbane, Elli began taking adult dance cardio classes. She realised there was a gap in the Burdekin fitness market.

“I realised that dance cardio was a thing and you couldn’t get that here unless you wanted to dance properly.”

“There was a gap in the community; it wasn’t available.”

“Here it was always if you wanted to exercise, you could go for a walk, or there was only really a gym situation.”

shut down whole fisheries – as well as the businesses that rely on them, such as boat manufacturers and seafood retailers.

“I think that’s going to hurt regional towns all the way up the coast,” he said.

“Particularly it’s going to hurt this town, the local businesses.”

Mr Green has already gained support from more than a hundred fishers around the Burdekin region and beyond, actively

raising money to legally dispute the changes, which are due to be finalised in July next year.

The changes have been a long time coming but only recently have proposals and figures come to light about what the allocations to a fisher’s catch will be and the new costs.

The recent re-election of the Labour State government ensured that changes proposed would go ahead and kick into action next year.

The new quota system will force fishers to pay thousands more for the rights to fish the amount they need to sustain their livelihood.

“It’s not pretty,” he said. “What we’re doing is waiting for this quota to come out and we will be going through the court system to see if we can get a better outcome.”

His greatest fear is for the industry itself, and small-scale commercial fishers like himself who he fears may go under if the new rules are adopted.

“We’re going to be wiped out,” he said.

Local Fire Ban The current local fire ban will stay in place until 2359hrs on Monday 30 November.

All current fire permits are cancelled, with exceptions including for sugar cane, cooking, and small fires Hayden Menso which must not be left unattended.

It comes as hot and dry conditions create perfect conditions for fires outdoors, including bushfires.

The ban is active in the government areas of the Burdekin, Charters Towers, Hinchinbrook, Townsville and Whitsunday.

Elli Boatfield has brought a different kind of group fitness to the Burdekin.

After eleven years in childcare, she decided to return home to start her new business venture.

“It was time for something different, and I thought if it works out, it works out and if it doesn’t, it doesn’t.”

She has loved the opportunity to bring a new kind of fitness to the area and bring together a variety of women for classes and social events.

“When I came back here, I started doing the dance cardio, and that was working so I thought why not get qualified and do the rest.”

“I do a lot of pilates and barre. And then COVID happened so we were open for nine weeks and closed for 12.”

Elli is active in the community, hosting kids yoga at community events and teaching dance in schools. She enjoys the interaction with people and the social aspect of her classes.

“My youngest student is around three in the junior classes, and my oldest is about 60, so the age range is huge.”

All in for Aiden

Let’s all come together to support this little legend Hayden Menso FOR one little boy and his family, grabbing life with both hands is what they do in the face of adversity.

Aiden Carrington is just six years old and battles with a disease that prevents his cells from functioning properly.

It affects his mobility and his ability to fight infection – and it’s incurable.

Aiden’s mother, Joanne, said he suffers from Thiamine Metabolic Dysfunction Syndrome 5, a form of mitochondrial disease.

“Effectively, he has two spelling mistakes in his TPK1 gene,” she said.

“It means his body doesn’t metabolise thiamine (Vitamin B1) properly.”

At six months old catching the flu, Aiden’s body was unable to fight the infection due to the deficiency, leading to damage to white matter in his brain.

It means his mobility is limited, and he often uses a wheelchair for greater accessibility – but he’s a natural-born fighter.

“Aiden is happy, and he loves people,” said Joanne.

“He laughs at a gazillion different things.

Thank god Aiden is like that because he deals with a lot.” But as Aiden grows up, so do his needs.

Before long, the family will need a bigger, modified vehicle to get around – or he will be too big for mum to move him physically.

The National Disability Insurance Scheme

(NDIS) will help fund the modification of a vehicle to suit the needs; however, it cannot finance its purchase.

The NDIS recommends a Kia Carnival, which, with modification, will cost close to $60,000 – a figure out of Joanne’s reach.

“Being on a carer’s pension, I don’t have access to finance,” she said.

“The NDIS should be taking that into consideration when they’re providing funding for motor vehicles.”

“I would say the majority of people that need new motor vehicles are not in the financial position to purchase the vehicles that meet their [NDIS] guidelines. They want the car to last at least eight years. If we can get a brand-new car, it’ll last us longer than that,” Joanne said.

“I wouldn’t need a people mover if Aiden didn’t have a disability.

“But if we don’t get the car in a reasonable amount of time, we’ll get to the point that he is just too big to lift.

“If I needed to get a new car, I probably wouldn’t be buying a brand new one anyway.”

The situation is challenging, with Joanne being a single mum and caring for her other nine-year-old son.

But thanks to support from the local community, help is at hand.

next week hosting a fundraising show at the Burdekin Race Club to help raise funds to buy the car.

All in for Aiden will take place on December 5, with local entertainers Attori providing the goods on the night.

“I’m absolutely looking forward to it,” said Joanne. “It’ll be good to have a night out. It’ll be good to have Attori entertaining; they are always good.

“I’m sure it will be a great night before the Christmas madness hits off,” Joanne said.

Performer Ricky Romeo said the Burdekin community was always eager to support one of their own.

“The Burdekin’s a very generous place,” he said. “Hopefully, people can come along and help him out. He’s just such a beautiful kid and really needs this car to get around in.

“The Burdekin looks after its own.”

Ricky said the Ultimate Jukebox show would present a night of fun and frivolity, with just about any type of music on the playlist.

“You go from singing country one second to heavy metal the next,” he said.

“There’s open-air, and you can come along with your friends and do it for a good cause.”

For Joanne, there is one thing that has kept her going over the past few years – and that is Aiden’s smile.

“Through it all, Aiden’s pretty happy,” she said.

“He is in a level of pain all the time, but he is such a happy kid that you wouldn’t know it.”

Local children celebrate HIPPY graduation Hayden Menso

MAKING the most of the early years is so important, especially in learning and education.

The Burdekin is no exception to this, with students of the 2019 cohort celebrating their graduation from the Home Interaction Program for Parents and Youngsters (HIPPY) program on Monday.

The program provides an in-home education and parenting program for children aged 4 to 5 from disadvantaged backgrounds, with 100 sites nationally.

Delivered by Centacare North Queensland, in partnership with the Brotherhood of St Laurence (BSL), HIPPY is a proven program offering for children, families and creating local jobs in our community, providing strong returns on Commonwealth funding.

Program coordinator Rebecca Aldridge said that while 2020 has been a challenging time for those involved in the program, its outcomes are an achievement.

“Every child, every parent, and every tutor

who is part of HIPPY Burdekin has worked incredibly hard to get to graduation, and that should be celebrated. For a large part of the year, our tutors supported families virtually, and everyone showed great flexibility in adapting,” said Rebecca Aldridge.

The program is celebrating its sixth year running in the Burdekin region, giving valuable education to young children since 2014.

HIPPY National Manager, Marian Pettit, said the program helps develop an early positive education for children who may need it most.

“HIPPY delivers on so many fronts.

Children develop a love of learning early that is maintained throughout their lives. Families are engaged and support their children’s learning and aspirations. [There’s] jobs for local tutors who work hard to develop new skills and confidence can then move into new opportunities in the job market,” she said.

COMMENTATOR IN THE MAKING

LOCAL boy Chase Christensen won the NRL’s Couch Commentary competition, beating hundreds of participants across Australia to score two coveted tickets to the State of Origin, last week.

The competition asked participants to submit a 30-second recording of themselves commentating a game.

An avid Rugby League fan, Chase impressed the judges with his breakdown of the game and announced the winner on Inside the NRL, NRL TV’s televised program.

Chase won with another entrant and enjoyed a night in the Chemist Warehouse lounge area to watch the game with his uncle, and given a 500 dollar Chemist Warehouse voucher.

The 13-year-old has made his family proud and could be looking forward to a promising future as an NRL commentator.

Pierina Scuderi turns 98 FOUR generations of Scuderi’s have celebrated Pierina’s 98th birthday, as the family reflects on a long period of Burdekin history and celebrates her life in Brandon and Home Hill.

At 98 years old Pierina is still healthy, living independently and spending time with her son Frank and his wife, Kay. Her families history in Home Hill goes back to 1923 when at just 22 months old she arrived with her mother and father from northern Italy.

Working on the sugar cane farm, she went to Iona State School before leaving school to help her mother at home.

Pierina was a keen tennis player and loved attending the town’s social dances, where at 17 she met Paul Scuderi, who was singing in the band that was playing one night.

There was an immediate attraction, and Paul danced with no one else that night.

When War broke out in 1939, he served in the army in Brisbane, proposing, engagement ring and all, by mail as World War II drew to a close.

After a six-year courtship, the pair married, moving to a cane farm in Brandon.

But in 1979, Paul was tragically killed in a train crossing accident, leaving Pierina devastated and widowed at 57.

Since then, she has been an active gardener, and family members still remember lunch at their Nonna’s on a Sunday afternoon, where she would make spaghetti bolognese and prepare her homegrown vegetables.

Her life has been rich, and she has enjoyed spending time with her family, her three children, nieces, grandkids and greatgrandkids.

The family celebrated the birthday festivities and milestone with a barbecue at the Brandon house.

Ladies back on the Crafts HOME HILL Friends and Neighbours Craft Group have returned after the COVID hiatus and are well into keeping busy with their crafts.

It’s the same group, but at a new venue, now meeting at 9 am at the Home Hill Community Sports Club.

It’s a fun social morning of various crafts, chats, and of course, smoko.

You don’t have to be able to do any craft; anyone is welcome to come along, get out of the house, and meet others in our community.

You might like to learn a craft or have one to teach to others.

Some members have been donating items they make to the broader community, such as hospitals and nursing homes.

The Craft Group is a notfor-profit, with a $3 cost to join the group and $10 for the Community Sports Club’s lifetime membership.

FROM stolen vehicles to drug busts and even the occasional murder scene, one local police officer has just about seen it all.

Gavin Neal has been part of the Queensland Police Service for 31 years and has decided now is the time to take a step back from crime scenes.

Sworn into the police force on June 1, 1990, Gavin began his service in the Redcliffe/ Deception Bay/Caboolture area in Queensland’s south, in what he describes as “in plain clothes.”

In 1997, he applied for a position in Ayr, set to last for three years; he’s still here all these years later.

Before moving to the Burdekin, he had a wife and one child; since relocating to Ayr, his family grew by two, his children educated here, in what he calls a “good community to live and work in.”

Branch for the past 18 years, Gavin has seen the highs and lows of the town during that time.

“We cover anything that happens here for criminal matters, drugs, assaults, murders, even child abuse investigations.

“We don’t do nice things; that’s just part of the job.

While we deal with a lot of incidents that cause immense pain to others, it’s still immensely rewarding to solve and investigate crimes,” Mr Neal said.

With policing appealing to him from a young age, he initially took a different career path, serving in the Navy for ten years prior.

Gavin says it’s unfortunate that not every case gets a perfect resolution.

“At times, that’s not possible, but we certainly give it 100 per cent.”

To Gavin, the unpredictability of the role means no day is ever the same.

“One of the brighter lights

is turning up to work and not knowing what will happen during the day.”

Mr Neal recalls one of the more memorable incidences involved chasing an offender in a stolen car through town, before taking flight onto a farm headland.

Apparently though, the car ran out of petrol soon after, and police pursued the offender on foot through the cane field… when caught, the offender was of the mistaken belief that the QPS used engine immobilisers and Gavin didn’t correct him.

Moving on due to Queensland Police age requirements, Gavin says he’ll have a break from work but will then need to find something to keep him busy.

“It’s been an extremely interesting career; the downside is that sometimes the only point of interaction with someone is in a dark time.

But it’s a career I’ve thoroughly enjoyed and would recommend to anyone.”

ANDREA Piotto from Nrgize Fitness seems an unlikely poster woman for men’s health.

She’s joined a global movement, encouraging men to grow their moustaches during the month of November, raising awareness for men’s cancers and mental health.

For Piotto, organising a fundraiser and event that brings men together in her community is a tribute to her dad, who was diagnosed with prostate cancer last year.

“I think it’s important being in business and giving back to your community but this is just personal for me, for my dad,” she says.

“I wanted to make it less about the fundraising and to make it about men’s health, prostate cancer and testicular cancer.”

Andrea has catalysed 50 new mo’s in the Burdekin through a Facebook

group of 60 men, encouraging them to talk about their health and post daily updates of their new facial hair.

“Everyday people check-in, showing their weekly updates with their mos, just having a laugh.”

“We talk about mental health and even physical health in men. I have a husband who doesn’t like going to the doctor, and that’s very common.”

“It’s vital for me; I have a son, I have a brother, so if they can help their health with testing and awareness, it’s massive. If I can help one person, then that’s one more person.”

Funds raised will be donated to local suicide prevention organisation, CORES. Ross Romeo, the coordinator of CORES, is also growing out his moustache.

“This year, particularly with so much going on, I wanted to do it.”

He says he’s noticed an increased willingness in men to speak up about their mental health.

“Events like this are part of that change,” he says. “It’s raising awareness and getting guys to step up and take better care of themselves.”

Chris Wicks, the principal of East Ayr State School says he has had mixed responses to his new look in the community.

“To be honest, I don’t think I’ve ever been more popular with the ladies of the Burdekin. When I share that information with others though they seem to disagree.”

“It’s been a confusing month for me, but I think I’m doing pretty well,” he says jokingly. “People share pictures of the moustaches and the circumstance that they’re experiencing, whether it be love and admiration from the community

or discontent and disgust from our children.”

“My face is an ongoing joke around the school grounds as well.”

“My reasons for committing were obviously to have a presence in the community, to join in the fun and camaraderie with the group but also a sort of personal commitment to make sure I do those personal health checks for myself and my family.”

For the conclusion of Movember, participants will gather at the Kalamia Hotel on the 29th November, sharing their moustaches and their stories.

BRUCE HIGHWAY UPGRADES AND OVERTAKING LANE OVERTOOK SCHEDULE Federal Member for Dawson, George Christensen at the Mailman Road to McKenzie Creek upgrade.

More than $45 million of Bruce Highway upgrades at Palm Creek are now complete, seven months ahead of schedule.

DEPUTY Prime Minister and Minister for Infrastructure, Transport and Regional Development Michael McCormack said the safety upgrades between Mailman Road and Mackenzie Creek, about 35 kilometres south of Townsville, were critical to the productivity of the region.

“When you consider the project has had to contend with late season rains and some construction issues, it is a significant achievement for the whole scope of works to now be completed more than half a year ahead of schedule,” the Deputy Prime Minister said.

“It’s no small feat when the project consists of three new overtaking lanes, upgrades to the Cromarty Siding Road intersection to improve safety, property access upgrades and 10.5 kilometres of wider, safer Bruce Highway.”

Queensland Minister for Transport and Main Roads Mark Bailey said the project would provide lasting benefits and was

already a big hit with motorists and residents.

“It might not seem like much, but separating traffic lanes by one metre can significantly reduce the rate of head-on crashes by up to half, which is incredibly important in a 100km/h speed zone,” Mr Bailey said.

“Any safety upgrade means a lot to the thousands of North Queensland motorists who travel this section of the national network every day, which is why we continue to push for funding of these critical works.

“Providing additional overtaking opportunities also means motorists can safely pass any slow-moving vehicles, reducing the likelihood of people overtaking dangerously in single lane sections.

“Residents have also benefited from wider highway shoulders, giving them more time to move out of the way of through traffic when turning into their properties.

and events by providing much safer access for attendees of the annual Palm Creek Folk Festival and those visiting the Wongalloo Conservation Park within Cromarty Wetlands.”

Mr Bailey said the early completion of the safety works was also supported by the jointly-funded $514.3 million Haughton River floodplain upgrade being delivered a few kilometres south on the Bruce Highway.

“That project is also well advanced, and when completed next year, will transform the highway between Ayr and Townsville, making it safer and much more flood resilient.”

Federal Member for Dawson George Christensen said the Australian Government was committed to improving safety on the Bruce Highway and these works would also include delivering wide centre line treatments between Mailman Road and Mackenzie Creek.

A total of 89 jobs were supported over the construction life of the project.

The Bruce Highway safety upgrades between Mailman Road and Mackenzie Creek are jointly funded by the Australian and Queensland governments under the 15year, $12.6 billion Bruce Highway Upgrade Program. The Australian Government is fully funding $21.81 million towards the Overtaking Lanes Package, and $18.72 million towards the remainder of the safety works with the Queensland Government committing the remaining $4.68 million.

Council responsibility?

I am puzzled that the Burdekin Shire Council are failing to accept responsibility for cleaning the footpaths of pigeon poo and are even going to fine businesses if they don’t clean the poo of what I thought was the Council’s footpath.

After all the shopkeeper can’t put a sign or merchandise for sale on the footpath without a Council paid permit and can show an insurance public liability policy to cover the Council in case a claim is made against the Council, because it is their footpath as they (the Council) see it.

To compound the problem the pigeons are feral and the Council are, I believed, to have to take action on feral animals when they are causing issues.

Fair enough if the actions of the customers of the nearby businesses are causing footpath issues, then those businesses should be held responsible for maintaining a clean footpath and not the rate payer.

Les Henaway:

A Legend of Our Time Whether it’s on the golf course or officiating a wedding or funeral, many Burdekin residents have at one point come to know the local legend, Les Henaway. Recently celebrating his 80th birthday, he’s sharing his story of growing up facing racial prejudice to becoming a well-respected pastor within our community.

LES Henaway was born at the Ayr District Hospital on August 8, 1940, and comes from a family of eleven children; seven boys and four girls, growing up then was a completely different time to what it is now.

“My father, he had two brothers. Between the three of them, they had 36 children. 11 in ours, 11 in the other, and the baby of the brothers, he had 14 – seven boys and seven girls.”

A large family, the Henaways originate from the island nation of Vanuatu, with Les’ grandfather coming from Tanna.

“Vanuatu is made up of about 73 islands … my mother’s father came from Malekula; my grandfather came over here as a slave, to work on the cane fields.”

“In 1987, I and Lionel Henaway, my cousin, we flew over to Tanna to find the village that my grandfather came from. They took us to many villages, to the bay where the ship came in and took my grandfather and brought him over to Australia, and many others. We came to a village on the hill, and they said this is probably your village where your grandfather comes from.”

Finding the roots of his family was important in understanding his family’s past.

“We looked at the Chief, and he looked exactly like Uncle Norm, the fella that had fourteen children. We found out that his surname was Noaway, so when they came over here, they changed it to Henaway. The village was Lounapiktuan, and the Chief that was there was Chief Lahava Naplavi. So they were all there to meet us at the airport; the airport was just dirt and grass growing on it. So, we were wondering if we’d have a safe landing there, or if there were holes in the runway or something.”

“When we got out of the plane, all the ladies were crying. And I said to one of the fellas, ‘why are they crying for?’. They said, ‘they are just that happy to know that the grandchildren have come back to see them.’ So it was a great time.”

Les said he frequents the village, having visited about twelve times since that first occasion.

He uses his skills as a pastor to educate others in Vanuatu, helping to create a better society for the future.

Growing up was not exactly easy for Les.

In the 1960s and ‘70s, people might think society had progressed further and more positively than in past years, even in the Burdekin.

However, that was not the case.

“Growing up, my father worked on the cane fields doing labouring jobs, and my mother said to me when I’d ask her ‘can I stay home from school?’, she said ‘yeah, you can stay home, because you’ll probably be a labourer like your father and your grandfather.’”

This history wasn’t something Les wanted to continue if he could help it.

“And so, as I was growing up, I wanted to prove her wrong,” he said.

It turns out that was not the only thing he started to change.

“I was the first black man to marry a white girl in Ayr. There were a lot of things to go through because at that time there was a lot of prejudice here.”

Les married his wife, Denese, but not without tribulation.

“When we went to the Tropic Theatre, we weren’t allowed to sit with the white people.

We had to go up, walk up these wooden stairs, and sit on wooden seats up top.

“Then we went to the Delta Theatre, and they had a porch overlapping the footpath, and that’s where all the black people had to go and sit. We didn’t mind, because if the picture wasn’t too good, we used to look into the sky and say who could see the most falling stars.

“People that we knew would go past and say ‘hello, how are you?!’; but when it rained, we came down from there and wanted to stand up behind the white people. But the ushers came and told us, ‘you can’t stay here, you must go.’

So we went through all of that.”

Experiencing such racism and prejudice first-hand was tough, particularly for a young man in his twenties.

“A lot of the younger people are unaware of how it was like that. But now it’s changed.”

“I wasn’t allowed to go to the swimming pools. If we went to a hotel with my white mates from football, and somebody, a dark fella, had previously caused a disturbance, they wouldn’t serve me. So, my mates would go up, and they’d get served.”

Les’ marriage to Denese, a white-only child in her family at the Assembly of God church, then across from the Golf Club, was “the talk of the town.”

“When we came outside, there were all these white people standing there, looking to see.”

Having travelled to Mt Isa for football, Les had seen a different approach to mixed marriages, so he, his wife, and then two children moved to the Isa to set up a new life.

However, prejudice continued.

He was playing and coaching football and was taken on by the board; however, turned away by current life members of the club.

“They didn’t want a black man coaching their side. A lot of the life members left the club.

But after I’d been coaching here for two years, Brothers asked me to put in for coach for the third year, and I said no.”

Les knew inside of him; it wasn’t his fault.

However, an act of honesty and good faith created a change, both in the club and Les’ life.

“They paid me $500 more than they should have paid me. So I went up to the hotel, where they had the board meeting. They said, ‘alright, Les, we’ll check it out.’ A week after that, they sent me a letter and said, ‘Les, we want to thank you for your honesty, because we did overpay you. And seeing that you did that, we want to make you a life member of Brothers Football Club, as long as you stay in Mt Isa.’” “So there’s a lot of different turns in places in my life,” Les said.

After a stint working underground in the mines, Les said he heard a voice, a voice which told him to go to church.

“I said to my wife, ‘we go to church tonight, hey.’ She said we had been watching this television program, and it’s the last episode, and you want to go to church?’”

Les said it didn’t stop him.

“I heard that voice again. ‘Les, go on your own.’ So I went there, and I ran across the road because I was thinking my football mates would see me and say, ‘Henaway, what are you going to church for?’”

At the end of the service, the pastor said, ‘anybody here who wants to make a decision, raise your hand. I tried to raise my hand first, but it felt like lead. And so I jerked my hand up.

They were praying for me, tears coming down.”

The senior minister at the church asked for applications to become assistant minister, so Les decided to put himself forward.

“The closing date came, and the pastor said, ‘Well Les, you look like it, there’s only one name come in, and that’s yours.’

In time, Les became the senior minister and chairman of the school; until he returned to Ayr with his family in 1992.

Les joined the Burdekin Community Church in 1993 as an assistant minister, heading that role for twelve years.

“After that, the senior pastor left to go to Scotland; he’s still there. But he put my name in to be the senior pastor, and the people voted for me, and it was mainly white people.”

Les has since served as Chairman of the Board for Burdekin Christian College and become a dedicated and honoured member of our Burdekin community.

Although now in retirement, Les said that when people ask Denese how the pair enjoys retirement, she says, ‘I am, but not him.’

“Because I’m still doing weddings, funerals, and dedications, seeing people sick up at the hospital.”

Les still enjoys his pastoral service with the ACC and is an indigenous elder and Justice of the Peace (JP) for many members in the community.

From growing up facing racism in the local community to becoming a man of faith for so many others and retracing his steps back to Vanuatu, his story is an inspiring one.

“I’m still here, still surviving. I built up a thing within me that I haven’t got the problem – they’ve got the problem.”

“Some people still have that prejudice there, but that’s up to them. If they want to be like that, it affects their lives, not ours. It’s like them pouring poison and hope I die.”

Les said his life so far has made him a proud man with everything he’s faced.

“But not proud that you class yourself above other people. I am proud of my family and myself.”

CARING FOR THE LAND A new Landcare program is connecting people with disabilities to nature A NEW program with Lower Burdekin Landcare, RM Care and the Endeavour Foundation sees great results for people with disabilities and special needs.

The program has been running for a few months, educating special needs children about permaculture and the environment and getting adults with disabilities taking part in community initiatives.

Keith Kiloh, the president of the Landcare Association, says that participants in the program have been an enormous help on the property.

“We have about 12 to 15 come every Wednesday morning along with the guys from the Burdekin Education Engagement Program.”

“They come and do some potting up, and these guys weed and pot up, and learn a little bit about horticulture and land care,” he says.

“For these guys, I think it’s not just an engagement thing; it’s about getting them out and mixing with the community.”

“With the kids, it’s probably more of an education scheme, so we’ve been out seed collecting and doing propagation.”

An excellent organisation, run by women for women

The newest program commencing next year will see the volunteers planting trees around the lagoon.

“They’re always happy to come and share their time. It’s good.”

18-year-old Lochlan Lewis is part of the program. He says he enjoys spending time helping Landcare every week, using some of the knowledge he’s gained on his dad’s sugar cane farm.

“Sometimes I help dad out on the farm, watering the cane,” he says.

says the outings are a good way for participants to spend time outdoors and to socialise.

“They enjoy it, and it’s something they can do, all types of disability. We can work around everything,” Kerrie says.

“Mainly what they’ve been doing is some weeding, but Lochlan has helped dig out a tree.”

“They’re learning new skills, gardening skills, feeling valuable and achieving.”

ZONTA International’s 16 Days of Activism kicked off on the 25th November with an installation in the Burdekin Library, marking the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women.

The installation is a chilling representation of the 41 women, 18 men and ten children killed in Australia by their partners in the last year.

It consists of individual shoes to symbolise and acknowledge the number of lives prematurely taken due to the endemic and often concealed violence in our society.

“When I was putting the names on the installation, I was looking at these women and just thinking, ‘what have you suffered?’

It’s pretty horrendous.”

“It’s an outstanding visual representation.”

The Zonta International District 22 is the Burdekin’s primary organisation focusing on supporting, empowering and advocating for women and girls in the community and worldwide.

President of the Club, Isabel Stubbs says that the goal of the campaign is to raise awareness of domestic violence and the issues that are impacting women in the Burdekin community.

She invites the community to view the installation and to read the individual stories, humanising an issue that disproportionately affects women.

“When we started planning four weeks ago, there were 38 female victims, and now there’s 41.”

“41 women that we know of and 18 men, and some of those murder their partners and then commit suicide. They are counted in the domestic violence casualties as well. It’s very hard to know.”

According to the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare’s 2019 report, one woman is killed by her partner every nine days.

Zonta Club Burdekin has also been working closely with the police and courthouse to provide more comfortable spaces for women and families impacted by domestic violence during legal proceedings.

They will also be donating a book to the library, detailing the experience of a young domestic violence survivor. *You can learn more and view the exhibition at the Burdekin Library until 10th December.

Where are they now?

Dedicated to developing the Burdekin region and creating much of what we enjoy today, Graham Webb talks of his experiences in the local council and what he’s up to now.

How did you get into local council in the first place?

What did you do when you left the Burdekin?

When I graduated from Ayr High School in December 1963, I applied for and was successful in getting a position with Ayr Shire Council, as it was then. I was a young clerk, supervised by Merv Medley and Shire Clerk Keith Venables.

The state government gave me a challenge, and that was the Johnstone Shire at Innisfail.

When were you the clerk (CEO) of the local government?

I was appointed in 1986, and my contract came up for review in 2006.

The first mayor was Dr John Trace, the second was Cr Bev Honeycombe, the third mayor was Mr John Woods, and the fourth was Cr Lyn McLaughlin.

The last Council Graham served in 2006

I’d informed the council who was led by Lyn McLaughlin, that at age 58, I would look for a new challenge in local government. I loved all my time with Burdekin Shire Council, and over that time, served under four mayors in that twenty-year period.

What was involved in your time at Burdekin Shire?

I was very pleased to always work for progressive local governments. Before I became shire clerk, one of my rewarding challenges was to be involved in the development of the community arts and entertainment program, construction of the Burdekin Theatre, Burdekin Library, and the refurbishing of the Memorial Hall in Home Hill.

I really loved that, because it was very much community involved. The community donated $850,000 to see those performing arts programs and library get off the ground.

With that sort of community support, the council got right behind it, and in November 1982, the Burdekin Theatre opened, as did the Memorial Hall.

1982 was a very good year in the Burdekin, and the library opened in 1984. Council has always had an outstanding record in its sporting and recreation provision of facilities and programs.

What do you love most about the Burdekin?

The highlights were the council under all four mayors, to ensure that the Burdekin was active in promoting not only local groups but outside entertainment coming and performing in the Burdekin Theatre always gave me a lot of satisfaction.

It was the most financially stressed local government in Queensland.

The state government dismissed that council and appointed me as administrator. In other words, the council was sacked, and I was a committee of one.

I made all the decisions from February 2007 to the election in March 2008.

In one budget, in a 10-year strategic plan, developed programs that put that council on a path to financial sustainability.

I was also in charge of the amalgamation of the Johnstone Shire and Cardwell Shire to form the Cassowary Coast Regional Council.

You were also secretary of the Disaster Management Group; what were some of the disaster events which occurred?

From 1988 to 1991, I developed annual workshops bringing all the relevant groups associated with disaster management and recovery. What I did was create scenarios for a cyclone, a larger cyclone, a flood, and a semi-trailer overturn resulting in a chemical spill.

I’m not Nostradamus and can’t predict the future, but in every one of those four years, after I conducted those workshops, we had those events.

Cyclone Charlie, Cyclone Aivu, flooding in 1990 and a semi overturning in 1991.

I planned for them, and they eventuated, to the point that in 1991 John Woods said, “Graham, we’re going to get somebody else to do those workshops from now on.”

What are you up to now?

I’ve done some contract work with Brisbane City Council, and then I had a few years with the Coordinator General’s Department in State Government. Then I was policy advisor to David Crisafulli.

For the last seven years, I’ve been a consultant for a company called Reinforcement Management and Decisions Support Services.

Notable events include the 1982 Commonwealth Games, 1998 Bicentenary, and being the local coordinator of the 2000 Sydney Olympics torch relay, which got a lot of community interest.

We do a lot of work in the local government area, assisting local governments with complaint management issues and developing corporate management plans. That’s the type of work I’m still doing, at age 72.

When I left, the Burdekin Shire was recognised as one of the most financially sustainable local governments in Queensland. To the credit of successive CEOs and councillors, that is still recognised throughout the 77 local governments.

I’m conscious that we live in times where even people over 45 are worried about career changes. I didn’t make mine until I was 58, and in terms of my career, I feel both lucky and blessed to have been provided with the opportunities that I have been.

The Conversation Burdekin Seasonal Worker Shortage

Pacific Islander Labour Mobility Scheme

FOR brothers Scotti Iatika and Sam Low, the news that they were able to leave Vanuatu to work in Australia brought a mixture of relief and sadness.

Although they miss their home country and culture, they know that the money they earn will help support their families and loved one’s back home.

29-year-old Scotti remembers the day he heard the news, sitting with the other potential workers in his home community on Tanna island in Vanuatu.

“In our country, there is not much money so we came here for work,” he says.

“We came to work, to get some money for my country. I miss home but I came here to do something for them.”

It is now his fourth year coming to Australia to work on mango farms in Queensland and the Northern Territory, as part of the Seasonal Worker Program and Pacific Labour Mobility Scheme.

He says the men were excited to come back to Australia after Covid left the future of the program uncertain.

The Seasonal Worker Program was designed to fill the labour gap in Australia and promote relations with our Islander neighbours, as farmers struggle to find workers to pick their seasonal crops.

With international borders in intense lockdown, it was unclear if the program could go ahead, amid substantial losses in the agricultural sector as the labour force,

dependent on backpackers dwindled.

Participating countries involved in the program include Fiji, Kiribati, Nauru, Papua New Guinea, Samoa, Solomon Islands, TimorLeste, Tonga, Tuvalu and Vanuatu.

Scotti says that it’s been tough being away from home but that working in Australia has been a great opportunity.

He was one of 162 workers who came to Australia from Vanuatu on the 3rd September 2020 after the Morrison government responded to a heightened need for workers.

After quarantining on the farm with the other men, he was able to start work picking mangoes in Katherine, Northern Territory before returning to Ayr. “I work in the factory but some of the boys

are picking. I work in the background.”

“Here is cold, not like in Katherine. Katherine is really hot. Too hot for me,” says Scotti.

He says the work in Australia has been good but he misses his family back home, their regular cultural celebrations and the island culture’s food.

He says that the culture in Vanuatu is very family oriented, with multiple generations living together under one roof.

Having his brother join him in Australia for the last two years has helped him settle into life here.

“With my family it’s a good life, we look after each other.”

Bringing Agriculture to the classroom Home Hill High celebrates National AgDay Hayden Menso STEPPING onto the dirt in a unique learning experience has been a success for students at Home Hill State High School this year.

The agricultural program’s introduction has seen the DigINN Plot established on school grounds, funded by a federal government grant.

It allows students to grow, cultivate, and harvest fresh fruits and vegetables, which have been used in hospitality classes and to take home.

The school celebrated AgDay on Wednesday, 18 November, a celebration of the agriculture program’s growth so far, and partnership with Primary Industry Education Foundation as an Agribusiness Gateway School.

Year 11 student and AgStudies ambassador Dayna Linton said the day was an opportunity for all students to come together and get involved.

“We had a long table

luncheon for our whole school to enjoy. We used produce from our plot, tomatoes for tomato relish, mangoes for mango chutney and ice cream, eggplant. It was good to be able to use our produce.”

The plot has been a community-minded project, creating a hands-on learning experience for students.

“We had a lot of help from the community, the Patane family, Barbagallo family,

Billy from Farmacist. We had to dig up the whole plot from the start, then we got the tea tape down and the irrigation all sorted by Greens. We had Alex Patane help us with putting up the tomato stakes. So there’s been a lot of community involvement in it, as well as school involvement,” Dayna said.

“Because we’re a farming community, it’s really good to have that agriculture subject at school. To be able

to have a plot, get hands-on experience, and get different kids involved is a good initiative for the school.”

Students in years 7, 11, and 12 have been working the plot this year, with further involvement from the community in harvesting and selling the produce.

Agricultural Science teacher Louise Nicholas said the day was a perfect way to embrace agriculture at the school.

“Over the year, students have grown crops, produced the fruit and vegetables, and taken it to the kitchen and basically learned that whole paddock to plate process.”

The studies cover many aspects of the industry, including business.

“They’ve also marketed their produce, whether it be the fresh or the preserved, and learned all about the agribusiness side of it as well. It’s been a big journey,

and we’ve pretty well encompassed all the school in this venture,” Mrs. Nicholas said.

The school has engaged in the Farmers for the Future Program to allow students to learn about sustainable agriculture and how to maintain a healthy environment.

Guest Steven Pilla from Canegrowers Burdekin spoke on behalf of the Farmer Time Program, delivering real-world experience in agriculture.

“To see a group of students in the school connecting with the land is absolutely brilliant, and I look forward to being part of this in the future. To have a connection with students on what we’re doing in the paddock probably gives us a chance to explain our side on what’s happening in the field of farming.”

Student engagement not only educates but can further develop an interest in agriculture moving forward.

“It’s really important the younger generation understand what’s going on in farming, with technology changes and what we’re embracing as farmers,” Mr. Pilla said.

After an illustrious 34 year career, Burdekin Catholic High School teacher Mrs Paula Sexton will retire at the end of this year. Beginning her teaching career in 1977, Mrs Sexton has given the best part of her life to the service of students, parents and staff at Burdekin Catholic High School. As a long serving member of the school community she has worked alongside nine of the school’s sixteen principals. Mrs Sexton has shown her pedagogical diversity, teaching across faculties including English, Drama and Religion.

Her teaching experience has not been limited to the classroom. Between teaching at Burdekin Catholic High School and raising her family, Mrs Sexton has made valuable contributions to the wider community. She has been a loyal supporter of the Rostrum Voice of Youth Program, mentoring many students to regional, state and national success. During her maternity leave, Mrs Sexton founded the Magic Box Speech and Drama School – a cocurricular program offered to Burdekin Catholic High School students – to maintain her connection with the school.

As part of her employment at Burdekin Catholic High School, Mrs Sexton assumed the role of pastoral coordinator of the Senior school from 2002 to 2019. Over these years she guided many students through their final years of schooling, making an everlasting impact on their lives.

SMALL schools across the Burdekin have enjoyed a getaway camp at Magnetic Island, from Monday 16 – Wednesday 18 November.

catapults, building rafts, playing beach games, holding a talent show, and even having their own Amazing Race.

Hayden Menso FOR many years, the old, run-down, asbestos-ridden, and rickety building on Ninth Avenue has been the stage for the Home Hill Choral Society.

The two-story building was less than adequate for the performance group to put on their productions.

The acquisition of a new space on Eighth Avenue has bought promise for bigger and better productions from the society for all to enjoy.

Purchasing the space on Home Hill’s main street after some time on the market for a steal price, the group

has aptly named the area The Vault, having been the Bendigo Bank branch’s former location.

President of the Home Hill Choral Society, Robert Antonazzi, said the group had been looking to move since mid-2019, and this was the perfect opportunity.

“We got a ten-year, interestfree loan from the council, which is most suitable for us,” he said.

“The majority of our patrons are in their late 60s, 70s, 80s, and some in their 90s. The other place had nineteen steps; this one has only got five. So it’s

convenient, and it was proven when we had our first show back in March.”

The new space allows the entertainers to perform more involved shows and take more audience members.

“We had a tribute to Doris Day back in March just before the restrictions came into effect. Over four shows we had 250 people, which is the most we’ve ever had. We were getting encores and standing ovations, and everyone was really pleased with the venue and performances.”

The Vault is no hidden secret after utilising grants worth up to $50,000 to accommodate the necessary renovations.

“We got a grant from a local trustee patron who donated our money, as long as we named the kitchen after him.

So, the kitchen’s all stainless steel and new. We’ve got solar panels on the roof. We got a grant for the facade, a grant for the stage. We certainly put the grants to good use,” Mr Antonazzi said.

“It’s a very solid building.

Naturally, being a bank, there was a safe. What we’ve done is turn the safe into the men’s dressing room and storage.

We can go from the safe onto the stage without people seeing us, and it looks good.

We’re quite proud of what

we’ve done.”

“More importantly, the feedback from our patrons is wonderful. Everyone says, ‘keep going guys, you’re doing a great job.’”

“We had a competition to name it, and someone came up with The Vault, and we thought being a bank it was appropriate,” Mr Antonazzi said.

The venue is also for public meetings, utilised monthly by the Home Hill Chamber of Commerce.

“We couldn’t have asked for a better venue,” Mr Antonazzi said.

The Home Hill Choral Society is back in full swing with their current production, Harem Scarem, currently taking to the stage in the new theatre. Running until the 5th of December, it’s a tale of mischief and madness, laughter and fun, starring local performers in a narrative that takes the audience on a journey across the sands of Arabia.

Drones have a big role in agriculture NQ Dry Tropics PEOPLE who work with cattle will be able to muster using a drone, but even the most skilled drone pilots with no cattle nous will fail.

That’s the steadfast opinion of veteran helicopter and drone pilot Lyle Gillham, one of the experts who demonstrated the efficacy of drone mustering at each of the two Drones in Agriculture workshops hosted by NQ Dry Tropics recently.

He proved he knew what he was talking about by demonstrating how a lightweight off-the-shelf drone could be used to round up cattle, including beasts that had never seen them before.

At Mt Pleasant Station, Collinsville, and again at Jervoise Station, Greenvale, Lyle was able to introduce the drone to cattle in the paddock, and, in less than 20 minutes, bring them calmly to him.

At Jervoise, he was able to steer the herd past the hayshed where about 30 spectators broke into spontaneous applause.

“Drones will never replace helicopters, but they are another tool the cattleman can use,” he said.

“You can get up high and see where the cattle are in amongst the trees and send the bikes or horses directly to them instead of spending half the day trying to find them.”

He said cattle responded to drones in much the same way as they did to helicopters, but because drones were so much smaller, it was imperative that the operator didn’t sit the drone directly over the cattle and allow them to get used to the idea that it couldn’t hurt them.

He said good technique was even more important with a drone.

“Get up high, see where they are, see where they’re going, then use the drone by dropping down briefly to turn or block them, then get back off them and go up high again quickly,” he said.

Licensing, practicality, versatility and future possibilities were topics covered by the presenters at both workshops.

Chad Nowak, a former

international drone racing champion now working for UAS Pacific, talked about the rules and regulations and safe operation of drones.

He said the rules applied even in the most remote locations and strongly recommended people take the time to get training and an appropriate licence.

CEO of OTB spatial, Michael Kaminski focused on the cutting edge applications of the technology including using drones to inspect assets, and using advanced remote sensing software to measure vegetation density for forage budgeting.

He also talked about their application in weed treatment on farms.

NQ Dry Tropics’ staffers Josh Nicholls and Gav Rosetti explained how drones were used to produce imagery and survey data for communications and project planning purposes.

Jervoise Station grazier Greg Jonsson who, with wife Kerry, hosted the second workshop said the technology was impressive and definitely something the next

generation would use.

NQ Dry Tropics Senior Grazing Field Officer Josh Nicholls said drones were another tool that would help graziers to move cattle more often, to rest paddocks and retain end-of-season ground cover.

The Jervoise Station workshop was part of the Grazing Resilience and Sustainable Solutions program funded through the Queensland Government’s Reef Water Quality Program and delivered by the Department of Agriculture and Fisheries, Burnett Mary Regional Group, Fitzroy Basin Association and NQ Dry Tropics.

The workshop at Mt Pleasant Station was hosted by the Landholders Driving Change Project, funded by the Queensland Government through the Queensland Reef Water Quality Program.

Comments: The Burdekin mills processed just over 185,000 tonnes this week.

Kalamia Mill crushed out early on Thursday morning, making it the second Burdekin site to finish for the 2020 season.

Total throughput at Kalamia was 1.53 million tonnes with an additional 68,000 tonnes transferred to Invicta throughout the season.

Average weekly CCS remains steady at 14.9 units, which is above budget.

The highest CCS sample was 18.30 from a rake of Q183 third ratoon cane in the Inkerman area.

Pioneer and Inkerman are expected to crush out by the end of this week.

Sheepstation Creek Road, Mount Kelly – Water Infrastructure Upgrade Works

To increase the reliability of the Home Hill Water Supply, Burdekin Shire Council advises that construction of a new five megalitre water storage reservoir will be undertaken adjacent to the existing Home Hill Water Tower behind residential properties in Third Avenue, Home Hill between Tenth Street and Sixth Streets.

Burdekin Shire Council wishes to advise that construction works to upgrade water infrastructure along Sheepstation Creek Road, Mount Kelly will commence on Monday 23 November 2020 continuing until approximately Wednesday 23 December 2020, weather permitting.

Initial earthworks to construct a gravel support pad are scheduled to commence on Wednesday 18 November 2020 and are expected to be completed by Thursday 17 December 2020, weather and construction conditions permitting.

The spread of hours of the works will be between 7.00 am and 4.00 pm Monday to Saturday.

As a result of these works, temporary traffic management controls will be in place and Council will be required to close the Sheepstation Creek Road between Old Clare and Airville Roads. All road users are directed to utilise the detour via Ey and Airville Roads during this time.

All access roads will remain open within the area and Council will assign additional resources to control dust at the site during the construction period.

Motorists and pedestrians are asked to obey all directional signs and any instructions from onsite personnel for their own safety and the safety of Council’s workforce.

What to expect during the construction period: • Increased traffic and heavy vehicle movements • Increased noise levels, construction equipment and site vehicles

Thursday Club Results.

Thirty four players last Thursday and the winner was Peter (Ego) Egan with twenty six points second was Barry Leard on twenty four points and third was Johnathon Lewis on twenty three points.

On Friday night Bennett’s Exhausts hosted a great night of fun and frivolity.

Everyone enjoyed the night with some magnificent soft touches and determined drives featuring in what should have been a highlights reel. The winners for the night were made up of the quartet of Neil Mahoney, Nadia Lazzarin, Rino Lazzarin, and Ray Panecassio. They were so cool under pressure and came up with the goods whenever needed.

Second place went to the trio of Ben Barbagallo, Ian Giddy and Peter Jorgensen. Ben played with club bowls for the first time, putting in a masterful performance of lead bowls allowing Ian and Peter to ride on his coat tails to victory.

The Bradman’s prize went to the incredibly lucky group of Ruth Moore, Robin McAllister, Di Lindbridge and Bill Walker.

On Sunday there were three highly entertaining triples matches contested.

Merv Wilshere, Wayne Coonan and Peter Jorgensen had the unfortunate luck of running into the hot trio of Ken Ferguson, Rob Jorgensen, and Joe Yipanazar. Rob Jorgensen, turned up, surveyed the scene and then put in a performance that carried his team to victory.

The trio of Dave Sheehan, Jamie Woods, and Peter Henderson had a commanding victory over Nev Dickinson, Henry Hazel and Richard Mau. Jamie Woods played with a set of bowls that had travelled the length and breadth of the country. They had to have biosecurity clearance to be used given the places they had been and the way they navigated the Brandon green it looks like they have found their home.

In the third match, Damian Morello, Doug Kiehne and Hugh Montgomery battled away bravely only to be run down by a calm Gary Nosworthy, and precision focussed Mick McCloskey, and a lucky to have them skip in Leo Kenny.

The club AGM, followed by the President’s Ham prize day, will be on December 6 2020.

Matches will be on this Sunday with names to be in by 1:00pm for a 1:30pm start.

Home Hill Community Sports Club

Thursday Bowls Only ten players stepped onto the green. Due to the small number , it was decided to pick the winners from the hat.

The lucky team was Hugh Montgomery, Alan Jones and

Karl Rummeny.

Sunday Bowls Unfortunately, a few bowlers turned up and two games of pairs were played, but both games were played in good sport. With only one round, Glen Berryman and Russ Tyson defeated Dino Poli and Ken Esme. Mary Poli and Karl Rummeny defeated Steve Doig and Sue Anderson.

Four new players attended the club on Sunday and learned some of the basics of bowls.

We welcome them back on any Thursday or Sunday afternoon and hope they enjoy the game.

Remember the Karl Rummeny Family Fun Day is on next Saturday the 28th November.

Home Hill Junior Cricket

Some good quality cricket was played on Friday afternoon with all the batters making runs on the astro this week. The best was Perry Munro who scored 12 which included two fours. Emily Town bowled really well and ended with figures of 3 wickets for just 5 runs and Ethan Pengelly also got into the action with the ball grabbing 2 for 7.

The batting training in the nets on Monday must also have worked for some of our older players as a few of the under 14s made runs this week. Corey Heidke topped the score sheet with 35 off 31 balls, Nicholas Pengelly not far behind on 33 off 39. Matteo Felesina was 20 when he was run out and Clancy Colls was bowled on 19. The wickets were shared around the bowlers but Jacob Machin was the most lethal and economical getting 3 wickets for 3 runs. Nicholas Pengelly

The Under 13 Blue team had a bye so it was up to the Under 15s to fly the flag for Home Hill Cricket this week. Another early morning start saw us competing against Sub Parks at Endeavour in Townsville in a 40 over match. We lost the toss and was sent into bat and were soon one wicket down for only 12 runs. The next four batters did the job for us piling on another 189 runs with only one wicket falling, ending up with 226 runs in total. Salvatore Cardillo and Nicholas Pengelly both retired not out on 73 and 72 runs respectively.

Nicholas was also our best bowler this week with 2 wickets for 20 runs off 7 overs in Sub Parks’ unsuccessful run chase.

We won the game by 86 runs in what was our best batting performance yet in the Luke Feldman Trophy 40 over competition.

Kings of the ring Hayden Menso TAKING on the rest of the state, two local young boxers have gained success at the Queensland Boxing Titles.

Travelling to Brisbane on 13 – 15 November, Damon Pitcher and Justin Meeks took on the ring’s competition to battle it out for the top spot.

Local 16-year-old Damon Pitcher has been crowned the Queensland Champion of his 80kg junior division, winning the gold at the event in a straight final.

He has been fighting for six years and training even longer.

“Damon controlled the fight through the whole three rounds. Coming out with the win with unanimous points,” Coach Alex (Chook) Lawson said.

“The boy was tough, but I didn’t feel like he was really beating me throughout the fight. I was in control, and I wasn’t really nervous,” Damon said.

Justin Meeks, age 10, scored both gold and silver at the event across two divisions.

Entered in his 44kg junior division, Justin won by default, being the only competitor present.

Justin then challenged into the next division, 46kgs, where he won silver to a close split decision.

“It wasn’t too bad for the first fight up. I was a bit nervous as it was my first time going down. It was a tough opponent,” he said.

Coming home with the medals was a sweet success, considering Justin travels from Bowen to train and

compete in the Ayr squad.

The boys’ coach Chook Lawson said Justin’s performances were a dedication to the sport.

“He travels up here every training session; that’s a big effort. A 200km-round trip, so it’s amazing. He ended up with a silver medal and a state title medal for his 44kg division,” Chook said.

The boys’ efforts set to take them on a potential boxing career.

“In 2022, the Youth Commonwealth Games are in South America, so Damon will be the age group for that.

So hopefully, he can work his way towards that. Because he’s actually in the Australian Futures squad at the moment, so that’s the first step,” Chook said.

Delta Cleaners Night Soccer league has just three weeks left to play, with the semi-finals on 8th December, followed by the Grand Finals on Friday 11 December.

Once again the Drinkers Cup (The Ferg-Holden Trophy) will be up for grabs, with holders DL Lager determined to hang on for a fourth year (always supposing that they can find the trophy!)

WALKING FOOTBALL After Night Soccer finishes on 11 December, the combatants will have a few weeks off before Walking Football starts around 11 January.

The rules are very similar to ordinary football, except of course that running is not only out of the question, but is also penalised.

The Sin Bin will, I imagine, be overworked.

This form of the sport has become very popular in recent years, and Burdekin Football/the

SLoBs tried it out last year. It is aimed at the ‘older’ and ex-players, both male and female but anyone can play. It is good fun, give it a go.

A LEAGUE The A League is due to start on 27th December, as is the W league.

The A League has been increased to twelve teams with the inclusion of Macarthur FC, a third Sydney team, while the W League remains at nine teams.

The A League will be in its 16th Season and it will be the 44th season of national level football in Australia.

AFC CHAMPIONS LEAGUE The AFC Champions League has resumed and Melbourne Victory was away to Beijing FC in Group E on Tuesday night, and then will be at home on Friday night in the return fixture. In

Coach Alfie Cantarella said his boys played fast open football in their final earlier this year and were a delight to watch by the large crowd of supporters.

At 7.30 pm, the Club of Origin final will be played, with the winning team being presented the George Woodhead Memorial Shield.

The shield was one of the major trophies presented to the Burdekin Rugby League’s A Grade premiers.

Each round-robin game will consist of two 15-minute halves, with a short break for half time; the next two teams should be ready to play as the previous game finishes.

There will be no time off for injuries in pool games, but there will be in the final, also played over two fifteenminute halves.

The action will continue after the final hooter, with musical entertainment leading into the night.

The Junior Roosters had their Annual General Meeting last week and will have a new leader for the coming year.

Group F Perth Glory will play Ulsan Hyundai home and away on the same dates

UEFA NATIONS LEAGUE The UEFA Nations League has finished the group stage and in League A the four group winners were Italy, Belgium, France and Spain, who incidentally beat Germany 6-0!

EPL In the EPL Spurs and Liverpool top the League whilst in Germany Bayern is a point ahead of Dortmund and Leverkusen.

In Italy AC Milan is making the running two points clear of Sassuolo whilst in Spain Real Sociadad lead from Atletico Madrid. In France, as is usual, PSG leads from Lille.

EUROPEAN CHAMPIONS LEAGUE The European Champions League is at the half way mark of the Group stage. Each club has played three matches and the fourth match days are on Tuesday and Wednesday this week.

Jared Smith has stepped up from Vice President to take over the top job vacated

by Jason Williams, who will become the club’s Coaching Director.

Jared will have a new Vice President, with former North Queensland Marlin, Kurt Olsen, stepping into the position.

Kurt’s wife, Stacey, will be the incoming treasurer, with Melissah Lammon staying on as Secretary.

Jared Smith says he has high hopes of the club coming up with more premierships next season.

Dirt jumping action Members of the Burdekin BMX competed at their Burdekin Cup on the weekend

BMX hosts successful Burdekin Cup Carnival RIDING was right on track over the weekend, with Burdekin BMX Club holding its Hudson Welding November Burdekin Cup for 2020.

It was an event for all, with 188 avid nominated riders enjoying the weekend across different riding classes, aged from 2 to 50 plus years.

The carnival was a muchwelcomed event, with over 500 people through the gate across the weekend, and competitors travelling from across the north from Townsville, Proserpine, Sarina, Mackay, Moranbah, Atherton, and even Cairns to take part.

out, while others enjoyed what Ayr’s motels and restaurants had on offer.

The Cup was a highlight event for the BMX scene this year, with several riders choosing to renew their licenses just to be at the carnival.

While COVID-19 restrictions have impacted many sports, the Burdekin BMX Club has been riding full speed ahead.

This year, they attracted two brand new local major sponsors, Hudson Welding, and Tracpower and Polaris injecting fantastic prize pools for winners over the weekend.

The club has also seen

new members joining, with restrictions cancelling other junior sports during the year; however, BMX could continue as riders were dressed in their full protective gear from home.

Club Registrar and event coordinator Lisa Purcell said it was a weekend of great competitive riding.

“Canteen rocked it on, and we had people from around town come in and watch on the weekend. Finals day was pretty spectacular racing.”

Next year’s going to be super exciting; we’ve got all these new members wanting to join,” she said.

Clubs ready to battle it out

MEMORIES will come flooding back on Saturday, December 5, when the Club of Origin rugby league series is played out at Rugby Park in Ayr. It’s sure to be a day packed with rugby action, with historic Burdekin sides, Hornets, Colts, Brothers, and Home Hill Devils taking to the field.

Hornets and Colts will start the day off at 2.30, followed by the old rivals Brothers and Home Hill.

Many old-timers will remember those clashes,

which usually ended in a melee with both clubs having a distinct dislike for each other.

Hornets will then play Brothers and there was no love lost there either in years gone by.

Home Hill will next meet Colts in what could be a fast open game, with Colts having several young quicks and the Hill boasting a big forward pack.

Brothers will take on Colts in the second last game of the day, with the last match between Hornets and Home

Hill.

That should be a game to see, as both will be out to prove themselves against the other.

Spectators will get the chance to see the 2020 TDRL under 12 premiers at 6.30 when the two Burdekin teams, Blue and Red, meet each other.

In what was a cue for country juniors, the Under 12 Grand Final was played between Burdekin and Herbert River, with the Little Roosters victorious.
