The vaunted singer arrived in Ayr early on Wednesday for a surprise showing at the school’s performance of Strictly Ballroom.

MEDICAL practitioners and professionals are urging for patience as the long-awaited rollout of the COVID-19 vaccination begins in earnest.

While the rollout of the vaccine is already underway, local medical practitioners will receive highly limited dosage amounts during

the current phase of the vaccination process.

PATIENCE NEEDED At present, the Ayr Medical Group anticipate that they will receive fifty doses of the vaccine from April 12, with that stock hopefully replenishing on a weekly basis.

Mrs Cecil says that the doses are only the next step in a long process, which involved a lengthy application, submission and approval process from the practice.

“That’s something we have no control over, we have no control over the rollout, or the number of doses we get, it’s all up to how they roll it out,” Mrs Cecil said.

“It is good that we are seeing this activity, but those fifty doses are not just the elderly, the healthcare workers that weren’t in the 1a rollout, like Allied Health professionals and their staff, pharmacists and their staff, they’ll all be eligible now, so it’s not just the elderly and people with chronic conditions.”

“The advice we’ve been given through the government and the support organisations that support general practices like ours is that we shouldn’t be making appointments until we have the vaccine on-site,” Mrs Cecil said.

“Once it is on-site, we’ll open some of the appointments through our online booking platform, and in the event that people aren’t able to access those, we will make some through our reception desk.”

With vaccine supplies so limited in the region, patients will need to ensure that they follow all the steps to check whether they’re eligible, including going online to use the government’s provided eligibility checker.

Further steps will include bringing documents verifying their identity and proof that they are among the eligible groups outlined in the government’s 1b rollout plan.

“They will have to use that eligibility checker to ensure they’re eligible for this rollout, and even in that instance, they will need to be very patient, because the supplies we will be getting are very limited,” Mrs Cecil said.

GETTING RUNWAY READY Marina Trajkovich THE Burdekin Artisan Community Association is getting ready for its annual fundraiser this weekend, with a high calibre of talented textile artists busily preparing their creations’ final touches.

President of the Association Sandi Milani says that the ‘Rags to Runway’ event will be their biggest yet, with more entrants than ever participating in the runway show.

“We’ve had a fantastic response and over 25 entries,” says Sandi.

“All the entries will be presented and all the prizes given across the categories.

We have a student section, a

budget racewear category and then a category with an open budget,” says Sandi.

Designers will compete across several categories showing off their upcycled creations to judges and guests on the 27th of March.

The Rags to Runway concept is to take upcycled materials and transform them into a new outfit.

“Last year, there were some amazing outfits, and some really creative thought had gone into them. The materials used to turn it into another outfit were just incredible.”

“One woman last year used a pair of men’s jeans, turned them upside down and made a dress. It was really clever.”

“There’s a DJ that will be working music, nibbles, and we’ll have some live entertainment,” says Sandi.

Money raised throughout the night goes into supporting the club.

“This is our one and only fundraiser for the year. It helps us maintain our art space where members can display their artwork, and we do workshops and things to maintain some of those skills,” says Sandi.

Continued from front page: “Last year when we started this journey with Strictly Ballroom, many of our staff got married or engaged so ‘Love Is In The Air’ became a bit of a college theme song,” Mrs Creed said.

“A few of the staff joked that it would be amazing to get John Paul Young to sing it so I thought why not try to contact him and find out if he’d be willing, especially as it would give everyone a lift after COVID shut everything down last year.”

“Mr Young’s been amazing, he agreed to come and even despite the rising flood waters in NSW still managed to get here just so the students wouldn’t be let down.”

Mr Young said he was thrilled to make Ayr the first part of his return after not performing due to COVID-19.

In Brief Fatal collision in Giru An 18-year-old man has died in a collision between a motorbike and truck in Giru on Friday afternoon, March 19th. The motorbike and a truck collided on the Bruce Highway at Palm Creek Bridge, with the motorbike rider declared deceased at the scene by police. The truck driver was not physically injured during the crash.

“It’s my first time being on a plane, wearing a mask all that stuff, but I can’t think of a better way to kick off the new year.”

Mr Young was also humbled to see his music still finding a new audience this many years on.

“It’s just incredible, that was 1992, now we’re thirty years down the track and the song is even older. It’s amazing.”

Teachers and staff kept the surprise reveal under wraps until the eleventh hour, with Mr Young arriving in Ayr on Wednesday before running through a dry run and rehearsal in the afternoon at Burdekin Theatre.

“We’re all so incredibly excited, it’s one of those ‘once in a lifetime’ moments for our school,” Mrs Creed said.

“The hardest part was keeping it a secret so we could do the big reveal on the evening itself.”

Mrs Creed said she was expecting a mix of reactions from the students, with shock, excitement and disbelief among them, but was confident it would be an enduring memory.

“It will be one of those highlights they’ll still be talking about at their reunion ten years after they’ve graduated, I think,” Mrs Creed said.

Mrs Creed says she was also excited to see the town embrace the moment.

“I hope it’s good for our wonderful Burdekin region, it will really create a positive buzz since COVID last year,” Ms Creed said.

Stabbing in Townsville

LAST Saturday, Ayr local John McVeigh won the Northern Division Humorous Speech Competition; a fantastic win!

The speakers represented Toastmasters in Mackay, Burdekin, Townsville, Cairns, Darwin and Alice Springs.

Toastmaster competitions worldwide were conducted online through the Zoom platform. “This proved quite a challenge. Presenting a humorous 5-7 minute speech to a camera with no audience participation was an interesting experience. Furthermore, the real possibility of IT issues

that can instantly cripple your speech added an extra dimension to my already stressful situation,” said Mr McVeigh.

Mr McVeigh will be representing Northern Division in May at the finals, competing against the best speakers across Queensland, the Northern Territory and Papua New Guinea.

Mr McVeigh’s humorous speech focused on his ‘Dream Lawn’. Those who know John or live in South Ayr will appreciate the time and effort he invests to achieve the ‘immaculate lawn’.

From all reports, the Rotarians enjoyed his speech as much as the Toastmaster judges on Saturday.

Toastmasters International was founded by Ralph Smedley in 1924 as a non-profit educational organisation teaching public speaking and leadership skills through a

Departed president Perry remembered for hard-working, dedicated career as Rotarian Narelle Hibberd selling racing ducks with Norm Perry

Daniel Shirkie THERE’S still a bit of time before the Ayr Rotary Club’s 2021 Norm Perry Memorial Duck Race kicks off in style, and plenty of chances yet to score a duck for the races, but some among the community are taking time to remember the man who made it all possible.

Norm Perry, a former President of the Ayr Rotary Club, was given the honour of having the annual event renamed in his memory following his passing.

Ayr Rotary Club secretary Narelle Hibberd said the honour was a fitting tribute to the man, who devoted much of his time and energy to ensuring the races were a success.

“It was named after Norm because of his commitment to the event itself, he used to sell the ducks each year to people and he really went above and beyond what other members did,” Ms Hibberd said.

“He was always getting out in the community, and raising awareness of the race itself and what it was raising funds for.”

“He would just walk the

streets, selling ducks to all the businesses, he was a bit of a character, really.”

Mr Perry, who was key in a number of initiatives during his time at the top of the organisation, including helping fund the creation of a bicycle track for Burke Park School and ensuring a working mouth to mouth resuscitation model was available for the Royal Life Saving Society, was also fondly remembered by Tony Goddard, another Rotarian.

Goddard, who remembers Perry as a committed fundraiser who gave his all to the rotary cause, said that Perry was an incredibly committed member.

“He did a lot of door knocking and selling ducks to business in conjunction with Ron Matthews, but Norm basically kicked it all off,” Mr Goddard said.

“It was the same no matter what it was, when we were doing a cake stall for fundraising, Norm would pick

up a basket of cakes and take them all around town; those people who didn’t work in offices and weren’t in the town centre, he’d go out to all of them.”

“He was a full-on fundraiser, you could say.”

Perry, who not only served for a year as the Ayr Rotary’s president and presiding official, also received the Paul Harris award, one of the highest honours that can be bestowed upon a Rotarian, a mark that Goddard says was a fitting reward for an ‘illustrious career’.

Perry’s enthusiasm was matched by that of his wife, Maureen, who was every bit as committed a Rotarian as her husband.

“In Norm’s case, his wife helped him do so much, she was always by his side and they would both often look after and maintain the barbecues at Plantation Park,” Mr Goddard said.

“Together, they’d keep that

Aide for Aiden receives $1000 boost courtesy of the Miller farming family’s generosity.

GREG Miller, a multigeneration cane farmer who takes donations from travellers who visit his property and experience the wonder of a cane farm in full swing, sourced nearly $800 in donations from grey nomads and other visitors to the property.

The $800 sum came from people who travelled to view a sugar cane fire up close and personal, with it being part of their bucket lists.

A further $200 donation was contributed directly by Greg and his wife Lyn, who were

happy to see the funding go to a good, local cause.

“I enjoy talking to people, and I enjoy doing stuff with people. These days it’s been harder and harder,” Mr Miller said.

“Most people put a gold coin donation in, some people put in more, and that’s what we pull out of it. That’s where the money for this comes from.”

“It’s all donated, and it goes to something good like this young fella.”

The funding will go towards money that the Home Hill Rotary Club are raising for Aiden’s mother, Joanne Carrington, to purchase a

second-hand vehicle that will be NDIS compliant.

Aiden, wheelchair-bound due to a rare genetic condition that inhibits his body’s ability to absorb necessary vitamins from his food, requires a more suitable car, which the Rotary Club has thankfully found.

At present, the family has to cope with a family vehicle ill-suited to transporting Aiden and his wheelchair.

After COVID-19 restrictions forced the postponement of previous iterations of the event, a fundraiser is set to go ahead this weekend.

of travel that would usually come through Mr Miller’s farming property to experience the sight of a cane fire up close, among other attractions, he says he saw a solid amount of travel last year. He’s optimistic that more will come and make

donations.

“About eight hundred came from the people coming through, and the Miller family chipped in the other two hundred just to make it an even thousand,” Mr Miller said.

“This year, I think if we get

clean, paint it, do whatever was needed to make sure it was always clean. That was just something above and beyond the call of Rotarian that they would do normally.”

The Duck Race, which raises funds for new charitable causes every year, wouldn’t have been as successful without Norm’s impact.

“The work that Norm did was also an example for how the younger and newer Rotarians could do the work too, they learned not just to do a task, but also to find the enjoyment in it and to get something more out of it,” Mr Goddard said.

“Helping the community, and seeing how it benefits.”

Becoming Bluey Marina Trajkovich CHILDREN’S theatre performer Lachlan MacLeod never imagined a career for himself as a professional puppeteer, but now he’s found a calling and love in the artistry form.

The 38-year-old is part of the Melbourne-based Polyglot Theatre company specialising in interactive and immersive theatre and improvisation performances for children.

“It’s been amazing; my job is basically travelling around the world playing with kids!” says Lachlan.

The job has taken him from America to Asian countries like Japan, China, South Korea and Taiwan, touring with the theatre company.

Now, Lachlan is headed for the Burdekin in what will be an Australia-wide tour of the highly anticipated children’s stage show Bluey’s Big Play.

The show is the stage adaptation of the beloved and award-winning Australian children’s cartoon, using puppetry to bring the muchloved characters from screen to stage.

He’s one of the puppeteers bringing to life the Bandit’s character, titular character Bluey’s father.

“Puppetry was never really on my radar, but people seem to fall into it. You learn a lot on the job,” says Lachlan of becoming a puppeteer.

“You’re taking a performance from your body, and you’re sort of projecting it a foot and a half in front of you into another object.

It’s quite a magical thing to do; it’s amazing to be able to bring an inanimate object to life,” he says.

Lachlan says he’s noticed an artistic revival of the theatre type, with more puppets incorporated into shows in novel ways.

“Historically, I think puppeteers were meant to be hidden; they were either behind a curtain or underneath something or in a black beekeeper suit.

“But there’s been a huge resurgence in puppetry that I’ve noticed in the last five years, and I think a lot of theatre is actually using puppetry and not trying to hide the puppeteer,” says Lachlan.

“That’s one thing we really wanted to do with Bluey, not to hide the puppeteers away.

We’re quite present in the production, and even though we’re not the focus, there’s the opportunity to see some really skilled performers on stage and really skilled puppetry,” says Lachlan.

He says that one of the main focuses of puppetry is developing the character’s physicality and performance, a task he says is much harder than it looks.

“You start with that base physicality, and then once you have that in your body, you can start to focus on the nuance, the facial expressions and other little things to really bring that character to life,” says Lachlan.

“Once you become a puppeteer, you realise just how physically exhausting and gruelling it can be.

Puppeteers are often in very strange positions trying to use those triggers,” he laughs.

Lachlan says he’s looking forward to bringing the production of Bluey’s Big Play to the Burdekin and that working with the original creators of Bluey to put forward a magical stage show has been a delight in what has been a diverse career.

“There was quite a lot of pressure on us making this show because Bluey is so loved throughout Australia, and the rest of the world is catching on,” says Lachlan.

“All the main players of the tv show have been involved in this adaptation. That was really amazing. We had Joff Bush, the original composer working with us in the rehearsal room, live scoring while we rehearsed. It was quite magical,” he says.

“It really is a beautiful show.”

TWENTY-three-year-old Tiffany Shrubsole was drawn to the police force from a young age, inspired by a family friend who worked with the South Australian Police Dog Operations Unit (SAPOL).

“I think that made me more intrigued about the policing side of things,” says Tiffany.

“He had two dogs, a general duties dog and a drug dog, and I kind of grew up around them. I loved the way he trained them and seeing that,” she says.

Originally from Adelaide, Tiffany completed her six-month police training in Brisbane before working in Townsville for fourteen months. It was from there

she was transferred to the Ayr police station.

“I’d always lived in South Australia, but I liked the heat. I just wanted a change in scenery, to get out of my home town for a while.

“The Queensland Police Service seemed like a really good option at the time, and I’m still really excited and happy with the decision that I made.

“QPS had a lot of different things that SAPOL didn’t have, different experiences and training, and being the bigger state, it had a very different dynamic,” says Tiffany.

“It was somewhere new, and I got to get that dream job that I wanted,” she says.

Tiffany reflects on past jobs that solidified her passion

for police work when she truly felt the weight and the rewards of her responsibility.

“I had a job that I went to where there were some kids involved that weren’t being treated too well, and that really struck a nerve with me.

“My job while I was there was to make sure they were well looked after. I wanted the kids to know that we were there to help them, that those kids knew that we cared about them and that we wanted to help them no matter what their family situation was.

“That was one point in what will hopefully be a very long career that I thought, ‘this is why I do this job, and I am here to help people.”

Tiffany is still settling into Ayr, but she says that first

impressions are of the great community spirit at both the station and within the town.

“I love working here, and I love the station. The town is a lot smaller than what I’m used to, but it’s definitely growing on me, and the people here are great to be around. Locals here have been really welcoming,” says Tiffany.

“We’re not always scary.

We’re here to talk to people and help people, and that’s why we love our jobs. We care about the people we work with, the clientele we work with. It’s not just about arresting people,” she says.

“We’re here to protect everyone and help them and make them feel safe. That’s really important to me.”

AN emerging market has drawn one real estate professional back into the business, with Sue Perry taking up the reins once again as part of the team at Nutrien Harcourts McCathies.

SES and VMR undertake rescue training Marina Trajkovich STATE search and rescue coordinator and senior sergeant, Jim Whitehead from Brisbane has visited Volunteer Marine Rescue and State Emergency Services volunteers in the Burdekin to conduct vital search and rescue training.

Jim worked with the SES for five days and the VMR for nine in what is an ongoing training program for emergency response volunteers throughout Queensland.

“We want to make sure that everyone is trained and that we do have people who can assist us,” said Seargent Whitehead.

He says the training is to

make sure volunteers are up to speed to assist police in the event a search rescue is required.

“We start with the digging and talk about how to gather and validate information to turn it into intelligence.

“From there we can plan a search and rescue, learn how to follow how far a vessel might drift or a person might walk. We talk about terrain conditions and sea conditions and how that might affect it and we look at the mathematics of it,” said Whitehead.

“We also talk about briefings and how we can conduct a better search. We cover everything from A to Z basically.

“It gives the volunteers a

definite understanding of why we do it and it allows them to assist us at our headquarters.

It makes our staff system so much more robust and inclusive,” he said.

He added that the Burdekin volunteers were exceptional in their dedication to picking up the new skills.

“I would say that this group was actually the cream of the crop, they were very enthusiastic and even though some of the concepts are a little bit difficult and foreign to a lot of people they embraced it with vigour,” he said.

“It increases the understanding so that we get it done properly and meet the communities expectations when need be.”

“I was asked several times about returning to selling, and I’ve been a bit hesitant, but this time when I was asked, I thought it was very timely to come back into the market now.”

“I’m excited about how things are going in the current market and it’s outlook compared to the tough market I remember.”

Mrs Perry says that time on the market, and waiting times to sell properties have both improved across South East Queensland and Townsville and those roll-on effects are beginning to come to the Burdekin as well.

“People aren’t waiting to sell their properties,” Mrs Perry said.

“Anything that’s presented well and is neat and tidy is turning over so much

quicker now, and that in turn is going to lead to those price increases as the stock diminishes.”

“It is a really positive sign that things are happening and that it’s gradually filtering to us.”

Mrs Perry cited low interest rates as another primary driver pushing people into the market at the moment, as the recovery from COVID-19 takes hold.

“Our prices here in the Burdekin are so reasonable at the moment, that’s another positive for anyone looking from out of the region wanting to invest here.”

“They’re very competitive compared to surrounding districts.”

Mrs Perry said she was optimistic that sellers and buyers would both see good returns on investment during the immediate future.

ROBIN’S GROWING TIPS

The Burdekin is home to internationally recognised orchids and a tight knit community of growers.

Marina Trajkovich SAM Scalia’s love affair with orchids started when he discovered a small Dendrobium discolor on a bush tour while honeymooning with his wife, Mary.

“1956, we went on a bush trail in the Whitsundays, and we found a little orchid on the ground,” says Sam. When the twenty-two-yearold returned home, he was enthralled, learning to grow the same flowers that were so sentimental for him and his wife.

Now, at 87 years old, Sam is still growing and has won international awards and accolades for his flower breeding, putting countless new species of Burdekin orchids on the map.

“I just like the beauty of them; they’re amazing flowers really, the queen of the flowers,” says Sam. “It’s just a hobby, really; it gives you a lot of pleasure, especially when they flower.”

He walks through his greenhouse at the back of his Home Hill home, which once contained over a thousand orchids.

He describes the flower breeding process that gained him international recognition and the patience involved in waiting up to four years for the seedlings to flower, revealing the end result.

“When you do the hybridising, you can make thousands of different plants.”

“It’s not hard to do,” says Sam. “Then you get the flowers officially registered in England,” he says.

He’s won several awards for his orchids over the years, the cream of the crop being his beautiful white orchid, the Burdekin Bells, “Mary,” which he named after his wife in 1985.

When the flower won its first First Class Certificate, the highest honour for orchid breeders, it sold for 1500 dollars and has been used to create other variants of the

flower worldwide.

He’s gone on to name several orchids, most with ‘Burdekin’ in the title, to gain recognition for the region and pay tribute to his area and family.

“Mostly, my plants have ‘Burdekin’ in them. I wanted my orchids recognised because they grow orchids all over Australia,” says Sam. “I’ve travelled to Hawaii and San Fransisco to buy orchids which I’ve cross-bred with Australian varieties. I lend them to other people to breed as well,” says Sam. In 2020 he won an award of special recognition with the Australian Orchid Council for his contribution to the orchid world, one of only five awards given in the organisation’s history.

Another fond orchid grower, Robin Juffs, is currently nurturing over 650 orchids at his Brandon property.

He’s the Ayr and District Orchid Society secretary and has been nurturing his

orchids for more than forty years.

“I started growing orchids a long time ago. I always say orchids are addictive; they’re a bit like racehorses,” says Robin with a chuckle.

“They’re really fascinating plants.”

His prized orchid is the award-winning Oncidium flower, a small petalled variety that won the Ayr show’s champion flower.

“It’s very rewarding. The best bit for me is getting them to flower,” says Robin.

He encourages more people to get involved with the orchid society, which gathers once a month.

“It’s a diverse crew.

Members can take their orchids in flower, and there’s always a competition.

Everyone votes on the flower that stands out the most.”

“You can pick up new things and learn a lot from other people.”

Although Orchids are relatively easy to grow, every person’s growing environment can vary. Each orchid genus and species also vary in the type of environment they thrive in or can adapt to. Orchids, in general, prefer to grow under 50% to 70% shade cloth with a minimum of 6 hours of filtered sunlight every day. Orchids benefit from good air movement to help resist Rots and Fungus.

1. P otting: Most orchids do not like being disturbed too often.

However, they need repotting from time to time, every two to three years, depending on their growth rate. However, some like to hang out of the pots. Repot only when showing signs of new growth. Suitable potting materials to use is a good Specially Treated Pine Bark Mix with the addition of about 20% Perlite with some river graded gravel in the bottom of the pot. Some of the more exotic types of orchids require specific potting mixes.

2. Watering: You should do this early in the mornings to allow the plant to dry out through the day, so it’s not wet through the night.

This can help prevent fungus and bacterial infections on the plant and roots. Watering comes with experience, not too heavy and not too light. Every two days, in summer, if the days are extremely hot, you can water lightly every day. Sometimes some species may need to be watered twice a day on very hot, dry days. In Wintertime, every three days to once a week. Overwatering will cause your plants to contract diseases- fungus and bacterial rots and attract pests such as scales and often will die.

3. Fertiliser: You need to fee orchids regularly to keep them healthy and in prime condition. There are many good orchid fertilisers available for use as foliar sprays. Plants should be sprayed in the mornings when the sun is shining. I use high nitrogen such as (HSO -22) weekly for two weeks and alternate with high (HSO12) in the third week on a rotation basis in the warmer weather months and fortnightly in the cooler months with more emphasis on the higher Potassium, Calcium and Phosphorus plus trace elements. The rule is fertiliser weekly, but weakly, do not exceed the recommendations.

4. Pests & Diseases: I try and treat my orchids monthly with a fungicide such as Mancozeb Plus, while I also use some others such as Chloran 720 and Phosacid – Anti Rot during the wet, hot and humid periods of the year. These control a number of fungal problems. I also use, when required, Eco oil and Natrasoap in conjunction with systemic pesticides such as Sharp Shooter (Confidore replacement) for scale insects and a Miticide, Mite Rid for control various mites such as red and white spider mite. I add either Hysan or Alginox to the liquid fertiliser application. This helps in controlling bacteria and algae in the orchid houses. terilising: Always sterilise your cutting tools when dividing 5. Local schools rally against bullying Ayr State High School works to address bullying in all forms for the national day.

Marina Trajkovich BULLYING was an issue at the forefront of student’s minds last week, as schools in the Burdekin and across the country acknowledged the National Day Of Action Against Bullying and Violence on the 19th March.

Andrew Ballin, the head of student services at Ayr State High School, says that lessons that educate against bullying are commonplace at the school, but that the day of action was a great way to include the students.

The day was acknowledged by dressing in orange and writing messages of support on a huge banner at the school grounds, participating in educational activities on various bullying forms.

“Solving these issues at the grassroots is what everybody should be doing,” says Mr Ballin.

“We looked hard at what were the causes of bullying, what are those researchbased best practices, it’s something we’ve been working hard at.

“We do a lot of specific lessons. A lot of it is reminding people to support other people around us who might be struggling.

“It’s that concept of being an upstander and not a bystander. Everyone has an active role to play,” says Mr Ballin.

Of particular importance was the focus on different forms of bullying, like cyber abuse, recognised as a significant problem throughout the country.

New state government statistics suggest that one in five young people have experienced online bullying, with 84% also bullied offline.

“There’s a realisation I suppose that the whole world of social media is something

that is beyond the scope of what the research has previously been about. It’s a whole new field to take into consideration, and we need to take a multi-pronged approach,” says Mr Ballin.

“Most of our wellbeing courses incorporate that, and our anti-bullying day does include cyber safety, based on recommendations from the e-safety commissioner,” he says.

Mr Ballin says that the day had enthusiastic support from both teachers and students, broaching topics like tolerance and respect.

“It was also Harmony Day shortly after, and that’s about appreciating diversity.

If you get people to value diversity, then you reduce the incidence of bullying as well.

“A lot of what we do is to reinforce those messages and for the kids to share the messages themselves.”

A SELECT group of agricultural students at Home Hill High School have received a first-hand education in regenerative agricultural practices during a recent field trip.

Heading out to LegaSea earlier in March, senior students at Home Hill High School, twenty two students received a glimpse behind the scenes of the pasture to plate process from producer Barbara Coll about her farming family’s practices, safety and how they give back to the environment with sustainable practices.

Agribusiness co-ordinator Elouise Nicholas said the trip was well received, and presented an eye-

opening look at how best practice farms are run with regenerative agriculture in mind.

“It’s really important for the students, we obviously don’t have that kind of scale, or those kinds of animals here at the high school, but it’s so important for them to understand where our food and fibre comes from,” Mrs Nicholas said.

“It’s not just getting the most out of your land for that point in time, it’s about sustainability and so much work goes into that, it’s good for them to know where everything comes from and what goes on behind the scenes that leads to that packet of mince, or those steaks that they get from the supermarket.”

The students also learned about safety practices and how farmers ensure that work is undertaken in the best way possible.

“It can be dangerous, obviously, so it’s good for them to understand what has to be done and how it’s best to go about it.”

The students also received a visit from Clinton McGrath, an agriculture ambassador for the Department of Agriculture and Fisheries concerning plant production and the various initiatives undertaken to ensure fresh produce is provided to Australian consumers.

Both ventures were made possible through the Agribusiness Gateway to Industry Schools Initiative.

New leaders see kindness as key

SPEAKING at their official induction last week, Osborne State School’s (OSS) new leaders highlighted bravery and kindness as key attributes they hoped to bring to their new roles.

The four grade six boys Kalen Linton, Zaine Palmer, Te Kaha Robertson and Ethan Thompson individually spoke about leadership at the induction ceremony in front of their classmates, teachers, parents and special guests State Member for the Burdekin Dale Last and North Queensland Assistant Regional Director Jennie

Zaine, who has attended OSS since Prep, eloquently addressed his thoughts on leadership.

“I have been at Osborne for seven years and everyone is my friend,” he said.

“As a leader I am respectful of the younger students, older students and our teachers.

“When there are new Prep students, being a leader means keeping them safe.

“I believe my role at Osborne is to make sure no one gets hurt and to be friends with everyone.”

“I want you to ask yourselves, ‘How will I leave Osborne a better place for my fellow students?’

“When I speak to you at your graduation I want to

hear from each of you what you’ve done.”

Principal of Osborne State School, Hayley Laidlow, said she was incredibly proud of the four boys.

“To hear them speak about leadership and to hear how much they valued kindness, bravery and their role as a protector was very touching and a true reflection of how they look after the younger students,” she said.

The workload has already been enough to keep Jett engaged and busy, and he’s already begun putting what he’s learnt into practice as part of the car servicing crew.

“The boys have really shown me how to do it right and I’ve been getting to do some of the servicing, taking out gearboxes, it’s been really good,” Mr Dabelstein said.

Jett said he wanted to thank everyone at the Burdekin Motor Group for welcoming him into the fold, and also his parents for supporting him throughout the process and his school years.

Fantastic Four Raising quadruplets plus three young boys wasn’t always easy for Rosemary Rickards. Burdekin Local News spoke to her about life in the busy household this multiple births awareness week.

Marina Trajkovich ROSEMARY Rickards wasn’t expecting the news when her doctor informed her of the four heartbeats detected during her ultrasound.

Already a mother of three boys aged eight, ten and twelve, the realisation that she would soon be more than doubling her young family came as a shock to the Ayr local.

“We were initially pretty overwhelmed, I knew what it was like having one baby, so it was a little scary knowing that

one of the babies is a lot higher, so that was a concern for us,” says Rosemary.

“I carried them until 32 weeks before they were scheduled for the birthing suite,” she says.

“When I was delivering in the theatre, the midwives would shout out, ‘girl, boy, girl, boy.’ There were four nurses for each baby, so there were a lot of people in the room,” says Rosemary.

From there, Rosemary mentally prepared to bring the four new babies back home, Sophie, Nathan, Sally

“We needed around 32 bottles ready to go every single day. Before we brought the babies home, we knew we had to be very organised.

“We fed them around the clock, three times a day.

We’d pick them up, two at a time, and I even had a book to register how much they drank to give me a guide.”

“As they did get older, they would start to climb onto the furniture. We did have to really tie the cupboards down. They’d pick up toys

“We knew what was ahead of us. We were very positive and grateful.

“I had asked for a fourth child, and somehow that message got mixed up, and we ended up with four,” she laughs.

“At 18 weeks, I was already the size I was at full term with the boys.”

In the lead up to delivery, the mother spent three weeks at the Townsville hospital before travelling by air for care in Brisbane for another six weeks.

“When you do have multiple births, the rate of something going wrong with

She says that although she feared her three older boys would feel left out, they immediately fell in love with their younger siblings, helping mum run what very soon became a hectic household.

“I was a bit worried about how the boys would go with four babies in the house, but they took to it like you wouldn’t believe. The three of them were amazing.

“I would ask the boys if they ever felt left out, and the answer was always no.”

Rosemary says the biggest thing that helped her in the early years was being organised and meticulous

“It was a very busy household for a number of years. I think when you’re thrown into a situation that is a little overwhelming, you find inner strength.

“Mum came every day at first to help me, which was fantastic, and I had a few lovely friends who would help me as well, and

our neighbours were great too. My husband has been amazing.

“There were some lovely moments like when they started to walk, some of their milestones came together,” says Rosemary.

When the quads were six years old, Rosemary started working again, running her father’s retail fashion

business, adding to the busy mother’s daily schedule.

The quadruplets are now 24, and while Rosemary says that the bond between them is as close as ever, they’ve grown into four very different people.

“They all got on so well.

They always had a playmate and were never lonely. They adored their big brothers,

SOPHIE RICKARDS and the seven of them are all still very close,” says Rosemary.

One of the quads, Sally, now a nurse in Townsville, says that she didn’t realise her family was unique until visiting a friend who was an only child.

“I went to her house, and it was a bit weird, and she thought it was weird too that I

had to share everything,” says Sally laughing.

“For us, it’s normal because we don’t know the difference.

It was fun. You always had a friend over; we always had each other,” she says.

Sophie, a pharmacist at Amcal Pharmacy in Ayr, agrees that the quads never felt different growing up.

“It’s just like having any

After having her first child via emergency caesarian and first meeting her baby hours after delivery, she wanted to remember her second birth experience and for photographer Dania to record the vulnerable moment.

“I thought wow, that’s a really specialised niche. I guess what really turned it for me from something that was cool to something really meaningful was witnessing my friend,” says Dania.

“It was so powerful, and just to have that record really changed it in my mind, from something that was just nice photos to something that held a real depth and power,” she says.

Previously a documentary filmmaker and avid photographer, Dania saw the opportunity and passion for capturing women in their rawest moments.

She says that being in the delivery room and witnessing a birth is an incredibly powerful thing, the

niche photography subject something she never thought she’d fall into.

“Not only do I take photos but also provide support for families in what really is a sacred moment. I feel really privileged to be a part of it,” she says.

A mother of four herself, Townsville based photographer Dania has been capturing births in the Burdekin and, as far as Bowen, developing a personal relationship with the subjects she captures.

“I think having my own children opened me up to that vulnerability of the birth space and knowing first hand what it’s like to be in that position. The first few births were really eyeopening,” says Dania.

“It’s my job to tell that story, and it’s not something I take lightly.

It’s an incredible thing to witness a family being born, parents being born.

“I get to meet the parents beforehand; I get to walk with these families, sometimes from five weeks pregnant to when their baby is five weeks old,” she says.

Dania says that when creating a photograph, she looks for the small details that others might forget were a part of their experience.

“For me, an image that tells a story, is really powerful. The ones that I really look for are the images that make you feel something or that can evoke some kind of emotion.”

The Burdekin’s Volunteer Marine Rescue squad turns 50 this week, reflecting on the history and milestones that have made the organisation what it is today.

FOR Duty Officer Vince Papale, being a part of the Burdekin’s Volunteer Marine Rescue is very much a family affair, one that’s had a significant impact on his life.

Made secretary upon joining in 2002, then local president and even state vice president of the organisation, he’s seen the volunteer-led group evolve and grow.

Although still very much involved in the squadron, he’s passed on the presidential

“It has been a huge influence on us. We just love what we do; the kids have grown up seeing that and have also been wandering around this base since they were little; it’s just become part of their culture,” says Vince.

As Burdekin’s VMR reaches its 50th Anniversary on the 26th March, Vince reflects on how far the organisation has come from the group’s headquarters on Gillan Road.

From humble origins, a few passionate boaties, a caravan radio parked on Alva Beach and a few boats, the local

VMR has transformed into a thriving and well-equipped volunteer base dedicated to helping the community.

“Our founder, Allan Shand lost a nephew at Groper Creek. After that, the group had their first meeting at the Home Hill Boat Club in March, 1971,” says Vince of the group’s origins.

“They laid the foundation for where we are today, operationally you think about the technology we have on our vessels; they had none of that. They didn’t have a boat; they used their own boats,” he says.

The organisation now has two operational rescue boats, ‘Delta One,’ and secondary vessel ‘Honeycombes Rescue,’

The boats are held at the VMR base, allowing the crew to tow them by trailer to their operational locations, from Abbott Point to Cape Cleveland in the North when they’re needed.

Vince says he’s proud of his work leading the organisation’s growth, developing Burdekin’s VMR into a state recognised group.

“It was only a small sector of the boating community who knew we were here, so we worked on expanding that. We started to take every opportunity we could to involve ourselves in the community,” says Vince.

the boat wouldn’t go out to do rescues. I’ll say to anyone that will listen, our priority must always be on people in the community.

“All of a sudden, it changed from what it was into a more family-oriented group. We had more young people, our kids grew up and joined, and now we have a whole new generation,” says Vince.

“We’ve grown to 700 members affiliated with the group,” he says.

Whether it’s rescuing stranded families from sinking vessels or helping out with marine safety education in town, volunteers have led countless rescues and heart-wrenching search

parties, with countless hours dedicated to making the area’s oceans safer.

“I’ve never met a bad VMR person. It doesn’t matter where you go, we’re motivated by the same things, and that’s good outcomes for people,” says Vince.

“Every job is different, and every job is challenging, but I guess this is why I like to be involved. You never cease to be amazed by the people.

“The most rewarding thing is to see people rising above their own expectations.

Sometimes when it’s a particularly challenging job, you just look at the crew and think, ‘Wow, we did that.” says Vince.

Duty officers Vince, Lionel Tappenden and Warren Francis, are the often unsung heroes in our community, on rotating rosters that ensure one of the volunteers is always ready to help on the water at a moments notice.

Vince’s son David Papale, now the president of the local group and sister Gina Papale, say that the VMR had a huge impact on them growing up, the other volunteers becoming extended family.

“We both had that interest from a young age,” says David.

“It’s just a good feeling to be out there helping someone in need; it’s very rewarding to be that person who helps,” he says.

When Gina’s not on the water or helping out the squadron, she’s studying to be an accountant, adding that the group is always looking for volunteers from different backgrounds.

“There’s a lot of young people involved in our squad, and we value everyone’s skills and abilities, everyone comes from different areas of life, and everyone contributes,” she says.

“You don’t have to be the best skipper or boat driver, for example. Everyone is valuable to us,” she says.

David looks forward to celebrating the 50-year milestone, acknowledging the VMR’s history and the work they’ve been a part of.

“When you look at the journey that we’ve been on, we’ve come such a long way from when those few guys got together,” he says, “It’s changed a lot, but at the end of the day, the job we were born to do, we still do extremely well.”

SUGAR SAFETY THE HEADLINER AT MACKAY CONFERENCE The highs and lows of the new National Agriculture Workforce Strategy Daniel Shirkie THE safety of sugar industry workers was at the forefront of an agenda being considered by the Australian Sugar Milling Council at their biennial conference in Mackay.

The event, which got underway on Tuesday, March 23, adopted the title of ‘Living and Leading Safety’.

ASMC chair John Pratt said the title had been chosen in order to emphasise the ‘shared responsibility’ for safety in sugar workplaces.

The ASMC currently represents 16 sugar mills across Queensland and New South Wales, a force that collectively produces around 90 percent of Australia’s entire raw sugar quantities.

The issue has risen to the forefront, according to Mr Pratt, due to the sugar industry’s slow growth in safety performance compared to other industries.

“While our reported data demonstrate that sugar industry safety performance is improving, we still lag other industry sectors,” Mr Pratt said.

“Sugar mills are dynamic and complex environments but if everyone takes personal responsibility for their safety behaviour, whether it be individually or as part of a team, we’re confident we can deliver wider industry results second to none.”

More than 100 delegates from mills and associated organisations that have involvement with the sugar industry were invited to the conference, which ran across two days.

Other key topics at the conference include the importance of mental health within the workplace, with several experts giving testimony to the importance of a healthy mind.

“Jackie Furey’s keynote address on the second morning, ‘A Check-Up from the Neck Up!’ related the importance of healthy minds to healthy workplaces, while our day one line-up also included trauma counsellor, Paul Spinks, and emergency decision making expert Dirk Maclean,” Mr Pratt said.

The biennial meeting of the minds represents a milestone in the growth of safety as a

Large parts of New South Wales and locations in Southern Queensland and Victoria have been hit hard by heavy rainfall and flooded rivers, in recent weeks, damaging crops and destroying livestock.

Some farmers have watched their homes and livelihoods go underwater before their eyes. Livestock has perished, paddocks have been flooded and hay storages ruined.

The impacts come at a particularly inopportune time for the agricultural industry, with large swathes of New South Wales still recovering from drought, and areas in

Victoria and Queensland also hit hard during their recovery from drought and COVID-19.

Rural Aid CEO John Warlters said it’s hard to watch Australian farmers face another setback.

“Our farmers have had everything thrown at them in recent times; drought, fire, a pandemic, plagues (mice and locusts) and now floods,” Mr Warlters said.

“It’s certainly been one of the toughest times to be living on the land in recent memory, and our hearts go out to all farming families now facing another crisis.

Rural Aid will continue to be there for farmers in their time of need.”

Rural aid staff have been working to determine where the best results can be gained from investment and support, and channelling existing resources into those areas that are hardest hit.

Sugar • ICE 11: The raw sugar market moved slowly lower with no real conviction over the course of the week as speculators sold part of their position on oil and ethanol news. The May 21 ICE 11 contract overall trended downwards to lows of 15.55 USc/lb on Friday before closing the week down at 15.76 USc/lb.

• Oil: Brent Crude oil plunged by almost 8% on Thursday (18 March) off the back of rising political tensions between US President Joe Biden and Russian President Vladimir Putin. President Biden labelled the Russian President “a killer” and has threatened sanctions on Russia. Markets have become nervous about the potential for Russia to flood the market with oil in retaliation.

• Ethanol: Ethanol prices were sharply lower in the second half of the week as lower oil prices led to Brazilian oil giant Petrobras lowering gasoline prices by 5% after months of rising prices.

• Speculators: The Commitment of Traders report dated 16 March reports speculators have liquidated below 200,000 lots net long for the first time this year to a 190,000 lot net long position.

Currency • AUD: The Australian dollar (AUD) traded the week sideways only briefly breaking below 77.00 US cents to its low of 76.91 US cents on Wednesday (17 March). Strong employment data reversed the local currency to a weekly high of 78.49 US cents.

• AU Data: The AUD enjoyed a boost from outstanding February employment results, once again reinforcing the strength of the Australian economy rebounding from COVID-19. The national data release revealed total employment rose 88.7k (88,700) full-time jobs with the unemployment rate falling from 6.3% down to 5.8%.

• US News: The anticipation ahead of the US Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC) meeting on Wednesday (17 March) brought a sense of nervousness to the market as the US Dollar rose while equities and the AUD both fell.

However, a dovish tone to the FOMC quickly reversed these moves as the Fed left its policies and Quantitative Easing strategies unchanged, confirming there will be no rate increases until 2023.

Impressive turnout for local Pony & Hack Club at major jumping event Marina Trajkovich THE Ayr Pony and Hack Club hosted an Open Show Jumping competition and an Offical Gymkhana last weekend, attracting 57 guest competitors from Mackay, Proserpine, Charters Towers and Townsville.

Secretary of the club, Katrina Martin, said that despite the rain on Sunday, spirits weren’t dampened with local riders competing fiercely in their bid to make it to the State Championships.

“The State Championship will be

in Sarina this year, so kids can easily get there this year,” said Katrina.

“Normally, the Clubs that can handle the capacity of the riders are in the South East of the state, and we’d have to drive to at least Maryborough for those Championships.

“That’s why we had 57 riders which is an absolutely phenomenal turnout for a competition up here,” she said.

Burdekin competitors were standouts on what was a successful event for the club, with Georgie Coates winning the 1-metre class,

Eliza McMullen winning the 90cm, Nell Harris winning the 70cm and multiple clear rounds from junior members.

“We’ve had some new members lately. Our club is like a big family, so it was great to see 19 of our kids competing Saturday and Sunday,” says Katrina.

“It was great to see that they’ve kept at it over a hot summer and kept up with their horses to enter the competition season at the top of their game. They’ve all done really well,” she says.

The weekend event was a success,

with visiting guests and locals enjoying the impressive display of equine talent.

To conclude the weekend, local boy Brock Conway stole the show, winning the final jump round of the day and securing the age championship in the 15-17-years group.

“A lot of the boys in his age group had started to go off and do different things, but he’s stuck with it, and the girls in his age group are really really tight competitors,” says Katrina of Brock’s winning jump.

or two points difference with the scores, and he’s moved up into that age group this year and absolutely blitzed them.

“It was just the most wonderful thing to see.”

Burdekin Rugby League

Despite going down to a very fit Blackhawks team 24 nil at Rugby Park last Saturday, Burdekin Roosters A Grade coach Chris Perry saw plenty of positives in his young squad.

Perry said he was quite happy with the way his team handled the mixed Blackhawks team, who, although scoring six tries, had to fight for every point.

“My young boys took it to them, and I think it was mainly fitness that kept us from scoring on more than one occasion ... we would be attacking their try line when a heavy jolting tackle had the ball spilt only to see them race practically the length of the field to score,” the coach said.

Perry added that happened on more than one occasion.

The coach said he was very impressed with Brendan Cotter, who came off the bench and tackled anything that moved while also running the ball up.

Riley Maddern was another who stood out in attack in the forwards.

He was very impressed with the halves in Declan Dowson and former Fijian World Cup International Kali Nauque, Dowson is a workaholic, while Kali tried to control play whilst defending well, putting in his customary big hit, unfortunately going on with it and being penalised.

The coach added that all tried hard, and the club is on track.

A combined Reserve and Under 19 team from Brothers were too fit for the local squad running out winners 28 – 12.

The locals never stopped trying and, after being down 20 – 8 at the break, lost the second session 8 – 4.

Brothers scored three runaway tries with a Rooster dropping the ball with a try looking good.

Will Jack lead a willing young forward pack with Matt Murray and Scott Hibberd to the fore.

Jack O Keefe and Jake Bowen went well in the halves, while Jarod Thorley was impressive along with Dan Cullen.

Brayden Lampton, Will Jack and Nawahrie Tomm scored tries.

The Hens had a good start to the season, finishing on top of Brothers by 18 points to 12, scoring 4 tries to three.

Stephanie Monday made a welcome return to the game and was the general out there.

She was well rewarded by racing onto an intercept and scooting away for 70 metres for a try.

Akeliah Williams is only small, but she tackles around the ankles and has a good turn of speed in attack.

Young Blackhawk Indy Everett was smart around the rucks and picked up a neat try.

Winger Jo Morgan showed plenty of heart finishing off a backline move with the defence bearing down on her.

Shayla Capper, who scored a good try, Jessica Sutherland, Tamara White and Jess Clift all stood out.

The Hens will now have a couple of weeks off before meeting Herbert River, a new team in the competition, at Brothers on Saturday, April 10.

This Saturday, the Roosters are taking two teams to Mackay to meet the Mackay Magpies.

The A grade was victorious over the Magpies in Ayr last year, so that should be a good game with the Mackay team out to even the score.

The Roosters also won the Reserve – Under 19 game last year in Ayr before Covid struck, and here too, the Magpies team will be looking for revenge.

Roosters A Grade coach Chris Perry said that a couple of his players would drop back to the under 19 game, meaning he will have at least four who did not play against the Blackhawks.

All the players coming in are forwards with Riley Granshaw, Tyrone Sims, Zac Heron, Jason Reid and Dylan Carew.

Both Sims and Heron are hookers, and they will allow Luke Carret to rest during the game.

Granshaw has been training the house down, as has Carew and Reid, and they will relish the chance of showing Perry just what they can do with Mitchell Guy and Blake Hollywood showing form last week.

Perry said he was waiting to see the Under 19 team in action.

Co-Coach Will Jack said he will have a strong side with three players benefitting from last week’s A Grade run.

Rhett Williams was Half Back for the Blackhawks, and he comes back to the Roosters this week.

Braden Cotter was a stand out for the local A Grade side last week, and that run, along with Bradley Vasta will have given them the early season run they needed.

Jack said that he would have a full squad without the Blackhawk players he will get back, and they should give a good account of themselves.

Little is known of the Magpies under 19 team, although Jack says that that club is always strong in the younger grades and expects a solid hitout.

RAIDERS This should be a tough game with the Warriors huge and powerful pack. It will be very physical in the opening minutes, but I think the Raiders will get home purely on their home ground advantage.

BRONCOS One thing about this game... one of these teams will get their first win of the season!

Both the Broncos and Bulldogs have been ordinary so far this year, with both teams really struggling to stay with their opponents.

The second round of the ladies competition was played on Wednesday 17th March with 12 players vying for Judi Sheahan’s prizes in a VSS competition.

The rain that threatened, stayed away. close loss to Canberra but a close first round win, it’s hard to see them beat a high flying Parramatta who were in scintillating form against the Storm.

It will take a miracle from captain Wade Graham and their two playmakers Chad Townsend and Matt Moylan, to even get close to Parramatta this week.

KNIGHTS On the back of two outstanding wins from two great performances, along with playing at home, the Knights will be way too strong for a struggling Tigers.

Tigers haven’t been in the battle in their two games, giving their supporters no hope so far this year. In fact, they have not even been close to matching it on the paddock against the Roosters or Raiders.

TITANS I really can’t see our Cowboys coming away with a win against a Titans team that’s genuinely flying high at the moment.

With Jason Taumalolo out, they don’t seem to have much go forward. Halves Jake Clifford and Michael Morgan are being rushed, playing on the back foot and have not been productive in mobilising the troops.

On Sunday 21st March, the club held the annual Drummond 4BBB. The winners on the day were Peter Dale and David Ingold with an impressive 46 points. The runners up after a count back were Paul Krause and James Johnson on 43 points. The pin shot winners were Judi Sheehan and John Power on 4/13 with Bev MacDonald and Craig O’Keefe taking the prizes on 9/18. The ladies longest drive was won

by Judi Sheehan with Greg MacElroy taking out driving the men.

Home Hill Junior Cricket

Slow outfields and tight bowling meant low scores in the Under 13s this week. Charlie StantonCook retired not out on 16 runs and Thomas Cardillo was 13 when he was bowled by a good ball from Rowen Petersen.

Ethan Pengelly bowled very economically as usual with 1 wicket for only 1 run and Rowen Petersen also bowled well with 1 for 2. The Under 15s were on astro because showers late in the week made the turf pitch too wet to prepare.

Nicholas Pengelly and Corey Heidke made the most of the consistency of the artificial surface to score 35 and 33 runs respectively. Jacob Machin got 2 wickets for 16 runs and Adam Camer took 1 for 0 off his overs.

Our Under 13 Blue team were playing Norths in a T20 at Gill Park in Townsville on Saturday morning. Norths won the toss and sent us into bat, we were soon 2 out for only 9 runs in the fourth over. Thomas

Cardillo, Ethan Pengelly, Leo Olditch, Lucas town and Sienna Lago then combined in some good partnerships to put on 91 runs for no loss of wickets. This great batting had us end the 20th over on 4/107. Cardillo top scored with 31 runs and Town was next best on 26, both were not out.

We followed the good batting with a great display of fine bowling to restrict Norths to 6 for 56 off their 20 overs.

Cooper Lando took 2 for 4 runs and Lucas Town 1 for 3. Cooper also grabbed two catches in a great win that keeps us in the running to get into the T20 final next Saturday afternoon.

The Under 15 team also had a T20 in Townsville, we were playing Wests at Cutheringa on Sunday afternoon. We lost the toss and with the threat of showers were sent into bat.

After a couple of stoppages for rain we ended our 20 overs on 78 runs. Batting and bowling were tough in the wet conditions, Nate Di Bartolo was our top scorer with only 12 runs not out and Rian Berryman not far behind on 11 also unbeaten.

We got off to a great start in the field to have Wests one wicket down with only 8 balls bowled, but that is where the game ended. The heavens opened up again but this time it was too much and the game was called off because it was too dangerous to continue with the slippery run ups for the bowlers. Salvatore Cardillo was our best bowler getting 1 wicket for 0 runs off his 1st ball.

ORGANISERS of the inaugural Eddie Escriva Cup are hailing the event as a success and already looking forward to more fundraising opportunities after the tournament went off without a hitch over the weekend.

Twelve teams of players from across the region came together for the tournament, organised by the Soccer Legends of Burdekin (SLoBs), in order to raise funds for former players.

Ricky Romeo, one of the organisers of SLoBs, said the tournament was a natural next step for the group.

“That was our first fundraiser for this year, we called it the Eddie Escriva memorial and past players trophy, because Eddie was really the catalyst to the start of SLoBs, when he got sick, we came up with this idea and it’s really grown as we’ve gone along,” Romeo said.

“We looked at what Rugby League does, they’ll have functions to raise funds for explayers who have sicknesses or other troubles going on.”

“We raise money for those players and we help them out with whatever’s causing them trouble.”

Eight men’s teams and four women’s teams came together to show their appreciation and dedication and play in the tournament, which was held in Ayr at International Park.

In the men’s contest, the Blue Balls and Masters both triumphed over their adversaries

in the semi-finals stage to book their way into the grand final, with the Blue Balls edging out the competition in 3 - 2 thriller that came down to a penalty shoot-out in the Blue Balls favour.

“Eight mens teams and four women’s teams, they all did a great job, it was fantastic, we were very thankful for all of them and every single player who turned up,” Romeo said.

“There were a lot of sore bodies, but it was a great time, we all had a fun time.”

The women earned Romeo’s praise for the high level of ability on display, with all four sides giving a good account of themselves.

No Idea bested the Cheeky Chicks, while Minions scored a win over the UDS side in order to set up a grand final clash between the two winning sides, where the Minions proved themselves with a 3 - 1 scoreline in their favour to take home the silverware.

Both championship sides took home trophies for their efforts, although the focus for Romeo and the organisers was firmly on giving back.

“We’ve even got the ‘no money changes hands’ club, those are ex players that are tradesmen, if someone needs something or some help, we call them up and they pitch in,” Romeo said.

“It was fantastic to have so many people show their support, that’s what it it’s all about, you win and lose together, you laugh and cry together, if you’ve been there for your club, your club should be there for you.”

The Burdekin Panthers played a couple of trial matches against Warriors in Townsville last Friday night. It was cold, wet and miserable, but the Panthers came away with two wins. First up, the Reserves did very well, winning 5-2 after leading 2-1 at half time with goals from Brendan Gadd, Hudson Rogers, Casper Licciardello and Adrian Saunders, amongst others. The Premiers did not have it quite so easy; 3-2 ahead at half time, they hung on to win 4-3. Amongst the scorers were Jeremy Dal Santo with two goals and Nick Ede.

These were good pre-season wins for the Panthers, and it will be interesting to see how they go this weekend in the Warriors Carnival to be played at Melrose Park. The Kalamia Hotel Premiers, Burdekin Tyre Service Reserves and Kalamia Hotel Ladies Premiers will be taking part.

The FFA Cup 3rd Round was played last Saturday, and in a shock result, Brothers beat Olympic 4-0.

Brothers now go on to play the successful Far North team in the next round.

SURF LIFE SAVING YOUNG HEROES

NINE local lifesavers competed in the Surf Life Saving Queensland Youth State Titles on the Gold Coast recently, achieving remarkable results in the surf and on the sand.

Head coach Sage Hisatake, who was the group manager of all the young lifesavers in the region, from Sarina to Forrest Beach, says the crew did a fantastic job amid 1600 of the State’s top competitors.

“Everyone did a great job, they’ve done four to five months of training and that’s why they’ve had these great results,” said Sage.

“Everyone that went down from Ayr competed as well as anyone could expect, we were

lucky with the surf conditions as well,” he said.

Sage says that among other highlights, the March Past team did fantastically with locals Isabella Moloney, Mia Vivian and Sophie Parker winning a bronze medal for the iconic synchronised marching event.

“We also had a surf swimmer in the under 12s who got a bronze medal,” said Sage.

He says that everyone involved did a fantastic job, particularly with surf conditions in the south of the state differing from local Alva Beach.

“We had a lot of support from people who are all volunteers, all the officials who make this happen. With

1600 athletes all at a state-level its so good to watch.

“That’s the calibre that our guys were up against, maybe one or two waves behind guys that train day in and day out,” said Sage.

The U14 Ayr boys made the final in the running relay category, with three making the surf race final.

Sage’s son Ben and team member Austin were the U15 relay runners, coming in 6th and 9th in the flags category.

“We just had so many kids do really well. We were getting a lot of compliments down there about how the team were conditioned.

“They are the fittest they’ve looked since the North Barrier Branch has been involved in the State Titles,” said Sage.

The coach thanks everyone who was involved in getting the kids to where they needed to be and helping the team on the Gold Coast.

“Someone towed a trailer all the way from Townsville to the Gold Coast with all our boards and equipment. It’s things like that, that really help.

“You need all the kids, all the parents, all the coaching staff to get down there, get set up. It’s a team thing, everyone was looked after.”

“Results for us were secondary, even though we did achieve some very good results it was the fact that we could go out there and do the best we could,” he said.

“There was definitely a desire to come back and train even harder.”

Swimming for her sister The H20’s from the Ayr Surf Life Saving Club are prepping for the pool, in the lead up to the 12 Hour Relay Swim for Leukaemia.

FOR the Ayr Surf Life Saving Club’s Emma Smith, participating in the 12 Hour Relay Swim for Leukaemia is more than just an athletic challenge, it’s a way to honour her younger sister.

The fundraising event, taking place at the Home Hill Swimming pool and hosted by Deni Caspanello will see several teams take to the pool in what will be a continuous swimming relay, raising funds for leukemia research.

Emma has been preparing with her team of eight from the life saving club, for the cause she says is incredibly close to her heart.

“My sister, Rachel had leukemia when she was younger so it’s very close to home,” says Emma.

“She got it when she was very young, five years of age,” she says.

Emma was just eight when her sister, Rachel was diagnosed, after a pain in her leg raised the alarm that something was wrong.

“The first few years were pretty scary after we found out. It was

crazy and the last thing my parents expected.

“I have pretty strong parents, and my uncle stepped in so much to help them. If they had to be in the hospital with her he would step in to help with me because I was so young, it was really tough for them,” she says.

Her sister, now 28 is back in Dublin where Emma grew up, having fully recovered from the blood disease.

An assistant educator at the Burdekin Christian College, Emma has been helping to raise money in the lead up to the event, which she says will be a great opportunity for the community to come together.

“I feel like it’s a good way to raise money because you feel like you’re doing something, the swimming which we all love.

I think the way she’s done it

as a team relay is very powerful because I know that swimming can be an isolated competitive sport. When you’re in a relay it’s very team-based.”

She says the team, named the H20’s has been doing some training before the big event.

“I go to the gym anyway but we’ve been doing a bit more in the pool just to get that endurance up,” says Emma.

The team is still discussing their strategy, which will see the eight girls on rotating pool shifts for the full twelve hours.

“We’ll probably do ten to fifteen minutes each. The main rule is that you have to have one swimmer in the pool the whole time.

“We’re gonna keep going for the whole thing. It’s going to be hard but I think it’ll also be a lot of fun.”
