THE Burdekin River Bridge on the Bruce Highway will be temporarily shut down for two nights in early June to carry out repair works.

AFTER over 20 years in business, Rob and Evelyn Webb, with their daughter Karrie Webb are selling the iconic Burdekin Delta Cinemas.

Rob Webb says that while the decision to sell the cinema was a difficult one, the pair feel it’s time to retire and step back from the business they’ve run since 2000.

“It’s been a decision that’s been coming for a while, we’re getting it out there, and it’s expressions of interest at this stage. There have been a few people interested,” says Rob. “It will be a huge hole in the heart. It’s been something for the young people in the Burdekin for generations.

“We built the whole thing from scratch, and it’s been a big part of our lives for over 20 years,” he says.

Rob says that the cinema has been a big part of the town’s history and one that he and his wife have been proud to be a part of.

“This was a cinema right back in the early 1900s where it was a theatre and then a cinema. The building has a lot of history,” says Rob. “Little towns like Ayr need

something like this. That’s why we’re so desperate for someone to come along and buy it as a cinema, not just shut it down. We’d love it to carry on as a cinema first and foremost.”

Pro golfer Karrie Webb purchased the cinema for her parents in 1999 to give them a better lifestyle and greater opportunities to visit her during tournaments.

“Karrie always said she wanted to do something with me as we got older. She’s also put so much into it.

“It has given us a more relaxed lifestyle,” says Rob, who was previously in the building industry.

Evelyn reflects on witnessing the ups and downs of the cinema industry over the last 20 years and the excitement of the cinema’s grand reopening as a new family business.

She says that while cinema was booming when Karrie purchased the cinema in 1999, the COVID 19 pandemic and strain on both the cinema and movie-making industry has taken a final toll on the business.

“COVID for us in this climate has been the biggest gamechanger. It really has changed the world,” says Evelyn.

will be devastated to see the business leave the family, they are looking forward to retirement and will use the opportunity to see more of Australia.

“We’ll probably have a bit of a cry when it does go, but we haven’t really had a break since we opened it for more than two weeks at a time,” says Rob. “We’d love to see it stay as a cinema, as something the town can be proud of. We’re very proud of it.”

Fundraiser to help Roosters veteran injured in car-crash Daniel Shirkie A Burdekin Roosters A-grade stalwart has been dealt a harsh blow after being hospitalised following a car accident.

Lona Kaifoto is recovering following a crash on April 26.

While Kaifoto was previously kept in the ICU unit, he’s since improved in condition and is continuing to show positive signs, but is still at the very start of his long road to full recovery, according to a Go Fund Me posted in support of the family.

A challenging regime of rehabilitation and surgery still awaits the former premiership winner, and friends and family are fundraising to help cover the costs with the backing of the club.

The fundraiser was verified as authentic by those with knowledge of the situation in a conversation with Burdekin Local News.

Kaifoto’s family and friends have turned to GoFundMe, with a fundraising effort to

assist him and his family in covering the costs of his treatment, already reaching 100 donations after just one day of operation.

Thanks to some sizable donations from community members, the fundraiser has already reached $16,000 of its $20,000 goal as of Tuesday, May 18.

Excess funds will help keep the family by Kaifoto’s bedside while he recuperates and recovers and help support them through this extremely difficult time.

Kaifoto, who first signed with the Roosters in 2013, helped lift the club to the 2014 grand final a year later in the Townsville District Premiership, the year after he was the Rooster’s most valued player on field and helped co-captain the side to a premiership.

Kaifoto went on to play for the Townsville Blackhawks.

After departing the club to pursue other opportunities, Kaifoto is now back amongst the home side, bringing back a wealth of experience in the

BURDEKIN RIVER BRIDGE TO CLOSE OVER 2 NIGHTS Locals have their say on the bridge closure

Daniel Shirkie THE Burdekin River Bridge on the Bruce Highway will be temporarily shut down for two nights in early June to carry out repair works.

In an announcement by the Department of Transport and Main Roads, the closure is to trial removing and replacing one of the 40 sloping cord braces on the Burdekin River Bridge due to corrosion.

The department is optimistic that this trial will help future repair work on the sloping braces to be completed more efficiently.

“The trial will assist the project team in understanding the requirements, identifying any hazards, and planning for efficient and effective repairs to the remaining 39 sloping cord braces, with minimal impact to the travelling public,” the statement reads.

As a prerequisite for the work and to ensure safety, both lanes of the bridge will be closed to trains and highway vehicles.

According to a TMR Department spokesperson, “The work dates coincide with other programmed Queensland Rail maintenance works when trains are not running along this section of the North Coast Line.”

“Working at night will also allow the work to be completed as quickly and as safely as possible when traffic volumes are low.”

As a result, motorists cannot travel across the bridge between 7 pm Monday, June 7 and 6 am Tuesday, June 8.

The bridge will open for one hour between 11.30 pm on June 7 and 12.30 am on June 8 for the mill shift changeover and to clear queued traffic.

There is a second bridge closure period to all traffic between 7 pm and 10 pm on Tuesday, June 8.

The department advises motorists to avoid the area

and make alternative plans during the bridge closure periods.

Traffic controllers and Queensland Police will be on hand to ensure priority access through the work zone for emergency vehicles while the works are ongoing.

If the trial is successful, the Department of Transport and Main Roads anticipates that they will undertake future repair works on the other 39 sloping cord braces.

A post by the Burdekin Local News Facebook page announcing the temporary closure of the Burdekin River Bridge attracted 161 comments and 556 shares. 12,187 engagements happened overall in relation to the post.

Many commenters questioned the timing and utility of the decision, while others rushed to warn of the bridge closure on June 7 and 8.

One commenter on the post announcing the temporary closure of the bridge called it ‘another example of the Queensland government failing to plan ahead’.

Another said it was ‘really time for another bridge to be built’ while more commenters expressed concern over work arrangements and other issues that impact travellers between Home Hill and Ayr. A snapshot of the most popular comments are featured below:

highlighting their products, they get across in a novel way to potential local customers and the many visitors who come to town for the event,” says Mr Jackson.

Mr Brock gave participants an overview of Wilmar’s strategy of bringing large-scale manufacturing back in-house and the flow-on effects for local skills and jobs.

He said Wilmar’s Burdekin workshop was the central hub for major manufacturing projects across the business.

The Burdekin team had built the major components for Victoria Mill’s $10.6 million evaporator and Proserpine Mill’s $6.1 million pan, which are being commissioned ahead of this year’s crush.

He said the team had rebuilt four locos ahead of this year’s crush: Invicta’s Kilrie and Rita Island locos, and Victoria Mill’s Jourama and Cairns locos.

Each loco got a $1.7 million upgrade that includes a new cabin, engine, transmission, reversing box, electrical upgrade and remote shunting unit. Wilmar’s Integrated Work Management (IWM) team completed all of the work inhouse.

He said the upgrades were part of a 10-year strategy to upgrade the company’s entire loco fleet. So far, 15 of Wilmar’s 40-tonne locos have been rebuilt. $550,000

Water Festival AGM runs dry Marina Trajkovich THE future of the Burdekin Water Festival remains up in the air as the iconic event struggles to fill the committee positions required to guarantee its go-ahead.

At the last Annual General Meeting, where those involved were hoping to finalise committee positions, a president still hadn’t been decided, putting the fate of the festival in a precarious position.

Tamara Brush, the former president of the Water Festival committee says that without a volunteer willing to take on the role, the festival will be lost indefinitely.

“Last AGM, only a few attended that already hold or are moving between positions,” says Tamara.

“Some who could not be in attendance have stated they would take on roles although no president has stepped forward. We require a president for the future of the event,” she says.

The Water Festival has been running in the region since the 1960s, a beloved family event that sees the whole community get involved, with stalls, street parades and activities planned over its duration.

Another AGM is being proposed for June in the hopes that someone will volunteer as president.

“If a committee takes over, they can start forward planning for 2022 making it a larger festival,” says Tamara.

“The festival requires volunteers to step forward to keep it running. I personally

Proceeds from the racing duck sales will go to the Ronald McDonald House this year.

have been part of the festival since 2014 although I am unable to continue due to new commitments running a new childcare facility in the region,” she says.

“Unfortunately without someone taking on the president role, the festival will cease to run moving forward which is sad for the community due to it being a long-running festival throughout the region.”

A gift of life. Taylah Pearson’s family hears from organ recipients Marina Trajkovich A year on from Taylah Pearson’s tragic passing, her family has received a letter from one of her organ recipients, a bittersweet reminder of the kind of person Taylah was.

Unbeknownst to the family, the vibrant 22-year-old had already registered for organ donation in the year prior to the quad bike accident that took her life.

“We had decided to go down that road as a family and then a nurse told us that Taylah had already registered as an organ donor,” says Bruna Pearson, Taylah’s mother.

“She had registered when she was 21 which just shows what kind of person she was, not many 21-year-olds would be thinking of that,” she says.

Although there are guidelines regarding the anonymous relationship between a donors’ family and recipients, the Pearson family learnt that Taylah’s heart had saved the life of a young man.

Part of her liver saved a young baby.

“Before Christmas, I had sent all the organ recipients Christmas cards, and then one day we did receive a reply,” says Bruna, of making anonymous contact through DonateLife, the national body for organ donations.

“It described how the transplant had saved one woman’s life and how much it had helped her and her family.

She couldn’t even remember the last time she had felt healthy, it had completely changed her life,” says Bruna.

“She wanted to know a bit more about Taylah,” she says.

Although the Pearsons have been unable to share specific details, the woman wanted to know more about the kind of person Taylah was and pay her respects to the family.

The letter was read out at Taylah’s memorial celebration, held at the Kalamia Hotel last week to mark the anniversary of her accident.

“It’s a very moving letter, and hopefully, it will encourage

other people to donate,” says Bruna.

Taylah’s sister, Emily Christie says that receiving the letter was incredibly touching, providing some relief for the family in the tragic grieving process.

“It’s pretty special because a lot of people don’t ever make contact because they feel so guilty and bad about the donor families loss,” says Emily.

Tina Coco, the State Manager and Nursing Director of DonateLife Queensland says that donor recipients and families are able to contact each other anonmously through the organisation.

“Donor families often like to hear from their recipients as a confirmation that their decision meant something positive came out of tragic circumstances,” says Ms Coco.

“Likewise, all transplant recipients are very grateful for their gift of life and some feel very strongly about wanting to say thank you to their donor family directly through correspondence.”

“There are also recipients who tell us they feel overwhelmed by the situation, may still be recovering from their transplant surgery, or that something as simple as a card or letter cannot adequately express their profound sense of gratitude,” she says.

Ms Coco says that with around 1,650 Australians waiting for an organ transplant,

raising awareness of the incredible impacts of organ donations is a crucial step towards saving more lives.

“In Queensland, only 28% of the population have registered as an organ and tissue donor, yet we know more than 70% of Queenslanders support donation,” says Ms Coco.

“What I would like to see is everyone who supports

donation to take one minute out of their day to grab their Medicare card, jump onto our website and register their organ and tissue donation decision.”

ROBYN Kennedy has found incredible gratification over her twelve years volunteering with Meals On Wheels in the Burdekin, and has dedicated countless hours to helping vulnerable and isolated members of the community.

She says that over the years, she’s developed fond relationships between both Saint Andrews Meals on Wheels Lower Burdekin volunteers and the recipients of their hard work.

“My sister-in-law had gotten me to come along a couple of times, and then somebody in the kitchen asked if I wanted to do it on a regular basis. I was at a bit of a loose end at that stage, and so I said yes,” says Robyn.

She says that after her husband died of cancer, volunteering was a way to give back while finding a new purpose in life.

“I felt that I needed to be useful and wanted to keep busy,” says Robyn.

“I’ve met some really lovely people that I’ve been friends with ever since,” she says.

Meals on Wheels is an Australian not-forprofit focused on personally delivering meals to people requiring support within their homes, like the elderly, people with disabilities or those recovering from hospitalisation.

On the Meals on Wheels volunteer committee and in charge of driving meals to those in need every Tuesday morning, Robyn says that it’s the relationships developed that have made volunteering so rewarding.

“You get to know the clients too and go through it with them. We do get quite fond of

them,” she says.

“There’s been a couple of times where they might have had a fall, and we’ve been able to get assistance for them. One particular man, we were able to call triple zero and found out that had we not been there, this man could have died,” says Robyn.

“A lot of the time, we’re the only people in a day they might speak to; it makes you feel that you’re useful.

“Sometimes, it’s just about having a quick chat with people on your way in and out,” she says.

This week, the work of Robyn and generosity of other volunteers throughout Queensland is being celebrated for National Volunteer Week.

Mara Basanovic, CEO of Volunteering Queensland, says that new data from Queensland’s first State of Volunteering Report reveals the extent of volunteering and its incredible impacts in Queensland.

The report gives an overview of the 3 million Queenslanders, over 75% of the states population, who volunteered 900 million hours of their time last year.

“We have always believed that the majority of Queenslanders volunteer in some way. Now we have the evidence to confirm that, and it’s certainly something we should all be proud of and celebrate,” said Ms Basanovic.

CYCLISTS RIDE TO ALVA TO SUPPORT CANCER COUNCIL FUNDRAISER

A group of cyclists have ridden from Ayr to Alva Beach and back in honour of their friend, Michael Mooney.

Michael, who spent most of his life in Ayr and passed away a few years ago from skin cancer was an avid cyclist.

Friends travelled from Townsville and Mackay for the ride on Sunday the 16th May, named ‘Moon’s City to Beach Bike Ride.’

The riders raised $850, which will go towards Michael’s son Brandon Mooney’s fundraiser for the Cancer Council.

“The riders got up at the crack of dawn and rode from Burdekin Motors to Alva Beach for some respite and mimosas and then back to town ultimately heading to Chill for a post-ride breakfast,” says Brandon. “By raising $850 they’ve taken our current total to $12,500.”

Local volunteers help improve access to aged care services Jill Bozetto and Margaret Milan are partaking in a new trial program, assisting older Australians access aged care services.

Marina Trajkovich A new trial program in the Burdekin is helping older people in the community access critical support services through local ambassadors.

The program, which is being trialled through the Burdekin Neighbourhood Centre, aims to equip older people with the tools to navigate ageing and access assistance through My Aged Care.

Natalie Saroglia, the coordinator of the Burdekin Neighbourhood Centre, says that the Aged Care Navigators Trial program hinges on local volunteers, who undergo the training required to assist others in accessing help.

“My Aged Care is one of those huge portals with so many resources, but you’ve got to know how to access it. If you’re not digitally inclined or if you’re in crisis, it can be very hard,” says Natalie.

“We’ve noticed that there are a lot of services out there, but that a lot of people just don’t know how to access them.”

“For us, it was how do we make this easier for people.

There are so many things they could be eligible for that some people just don’t realise,” she says.

Two ambassadors, Jill Bozetto and Margaret Milan have volunteered for the position, undertaking the training required to assist people with the service face to face.

Jill says that as an ex-social worker familiar with the aged care system, she was inspired to volunteer for the role.

“I had known from my work in the hospital that there was a lot of help needed for people when it came to My Aged Care,” says Jill.

“There were a lot of people who needed these services but were afraid to rock the boat per se,” she says.

My Aged Care is a referral service designed to help older Australians get access to better care, whether that’s financial advice to help find an aged care home or find help around the house.

“There is a lot of information, and a lot of people don’t understand how they can get help, especially if they don’t have the computer skills to go off. It’s good to have someone there who can explain,” says Jill.

Margaret Milan is also volunteering her time for the trial and says that the first information session, led by Jill and herself at the Neighbourhood Centre, was a success.

“I used to be a registered nurse, and we used to deal with My Aged Care. I had some knowledge about it, and I’ve in the past referred people to it and been through that process myself,” says Margaret.

“The knowledge is getting out there. The ladies and gentleman in the group were quite receptive.”

Pat Anderson looks back on her years of serving tennis Daniel Shirkie HOME Hill Tennis icon Pat Anderson has marked another year in which her and her husband’s creation has been celebrated.

Pat, who along with husband Lex, was one of the driving forces behind the Home Hill Sugar Bowl says it was marvelous to see her husband’s brain child continuing to drive interest in tennis throughout the region.

“He always just wanted to see tennis go forward all the time, that was his goal in life,” Ms Anderson said.

“So he came up with this bright idea of the Sugar Bowl and it turned out to be a really great idea. For forty years it’s been running now, it’s just incredible.”

Pat and Lex spent years teaching and training the young guns at Home Hill Tennis Club, and even with Lex’s passing and her move to Townsville, Pat still feels a strong connection to the

event championed by her late husband.

“I’m very happy whenever I hear about it, and I’ve been hearing about it a lot, even from people who don’t play tennis, I’ve heard them talking about the Sugar Bowl,” Ms Anderson said.

“I’ve heard of people from Mackay who are talking to people in Townsville about it, people who haven’t even been tennis players, but they have friends who’ve been for many years.”

“It’s very well known now and it’s great that it’s still such a success after forty years.”

The event regularly draws competitors from across the North Queensland area and even further afield, and this year’s 40th anniversary event was no exception, bringing in a strong raft of competitors who Pat got the chance to meet and congratulate on the day.

her in tennis, which is true of a lot of the younger bracket.

We taught a lot of them to play tennis in Home Hill, so that’s a very special achievement for us,” Mrs Anderson said.

While setting up the inaugural Sugar Bowl was a tough challenge, Mrs Anderson says all the hard work has been worth it after seeing the impact it’s had for so many across the years.

“It’s a very community based and proud little town, Home Hill, the Presidents and Secretaries and Treasurers did an enormous amount of work and the whole club got behind them,” Mrs Anderson said.

“The last forty years, all the committees have done such a terrific job, but I left very impressed at this most recent one.”

LOOKING at artist Matthew George or Matty G’s detailed sculptural pieces, it’s hard to believe they’ve been created with just a log of wood and a chainsaw.

Based near Noosa, the exarborist discovered a knack for capturing the likeness of Australian animals and figures, soon transforming the new hobby into a thriving business.

“I had just stopped one day with my saw and made myself something for the first time.

I opened up a book and tried carving a turtle,” says Matty.

“I was really happy with it but didn’t think anything of it.

not in my thoughts at all, but it just sparked something. I certainly didn’t think I’d get to where I am today,” he says.

Twelve years later, he’s created thousands of sculptures, travelling throughout towns and communities in Queensland, transforming logs into works of art or monuments that represent a town’s history.

Whether carving at events before an audience with his unique tools or creating private commissions, Matty G is passionate about capturing the history of a place and its people.

Among favourites is a statue of Ned Kelly in Cooroy, a War Memorial statue created at Groote Eylandt and a set of statues acknowledging the contributions of the Kingscliff Surf Club, capturing the likeness of its members overlooking the beach.

“I do a lot of carving for different communities and am able to learn what those communities are about. I’ll think about every angle of the monument and do a lot of research.

“When I’m done with it, I need to be able to have touched every community member in some way.

“I love being involved in something that brings the community together,” says Matty G. This month, he’s coming to the Burdekin, creating a custom monument of a hand cane cutter for the Sweet Days Hot Nights Festival.

He’ll be carving the sculpture from a locally sourced log throughout the festival’s three days, where onlookers can watch him create the life-sized statue that will reflect the history of the region.

Upon completion, the chainsaw art will be established in a new location in the Burdekin.

“This Ayr project has a different angle to it. I’ve got to find the right log that will be big enough. It could end up as one big monument or several smaller ones. I’ll see what feels right,” says Matty G, who has been working with local arborists to source his materials.

“It’s bittersweet having it so tied to Lex, because it’s always tinged with that little bit of sadness, but that’s life, unfortunately.”

Seeing so many familiar faces who were touched by Lex’s commitment to the sport was another positive of the most recent trip to the Home Hill Tennis Club.

“That’s something we look back on with pride, my husband and I and a few helpers, we taught a lot of these younger people to play tennis,” Mrs Anderson said.

“It’s a special feeling and it’s lovely to see generations following through with tennis and keeping the Sugar Bowl alive.”

“The energy of the guy cutting the cane has to be pronounced. I’m going to give him that end of the day stance, looking out in a particular direction, out into the cane with that emotion attached to it,” he says.

Matty G says that the process of creating his statues often comes quite naturally, working the wood as he goes.

“I generally just go by feeling, I don’t even really think about it too much. I’ll start with a log and then will just start to carve.

It does happen quite fast.

“I’ll start off with the general form and then slow down to put a bit more detail into it,” he says.

“Sometimes I’ll start off with a log, and I’ll just stare at it, and the answers will come. Then I just put saw to wood and get going; you can’t always have a plan.”

He invites members of the community to view his work at the Sweet Days Hot Nights Festival, to see what his sculpting is all about.

“I think it’s about stopping and connecting with people and having a bit of fun, I suppose,” says Matty G. “It’s putting that energy into it. Truly the people I meet are great. I think when I look at my work, I love it when it finally gets delivered, and I get to see the end result.”

Faces of the Burdekin: Beatty Kelly Marina Trajkovich 90-year-old Beatty Kelly has seen the community change a lot over the years, often writing about her observations and life from the family home in Airville, overlooking the property’s small creek.

She remembers the day when as a young teenager, her mother had found her a job at Murray’s Photographic Studio on Queen Street in Ayr, where she was responsible for managing the studio’s photographs and clients.

Daniel Shirkie ON the eve of an incredible milestone, the Burdekin Singers group are set to celebrate and look back at 100 years of continuous history.

The organisation, which was once known as the Ayr Choral Society, will mark their 100th year in operation in 2022, and long-term members are banding together to bring the group’s history to life in a new book commemorating each performance.

Lynne Butterworth, a one time president who’s had a hand in many of the group’s achievements, says the idea came about after a 25th celebration was planned in recent years.

“What had happened was Monica Licciardello, our orchestral musical director, came to us and proposed a celebration of 25 years of the Burdekin Singers in 2017,” Mrs Butterworth said.

“I realised that we had been the Burdekin Singers for 25 years now, but we’d actually changed our name in ‘92.”

“I said that if we only focus on the Singers’ side of things, we’d be disenfranchising so many people who’d been a part of the organisation before that.”

The Ayr Choral Society became the Burdekin Singers in the early 90s, Mrs Butterworth says, in an attempt to unify the Choral Societies from Home Hill and Ayr.

Beatty had always been creative, often taking her sketchpad to the paddock of her family’s home, where she would draw between minding the cows, skills that would later become an asset for future art and studio work.

“I used to look after the cows, and I had a sandy spot that I would clear, and I would sit down to draw, which was very difficult because the cows would always move around!” she says.

When she began working at Murray’s, Beatty was often “When we had the 25th celebration, it sold out and we heard from so many previous members who came back just for that occasion,” Mrs Butterworth said.

“I realised then that we had such a limited understanding of what we had done and been in the past, there were some of us who’d been in the association for such a length of time, but we weren’t writing things down, it was all going to disappear.”

Mrs Butterworth had just completed a history book on an unrelated subject, and slowly began putting together a history of the organisation and it’s performances from her own recollections.

“I wanted a reminder in perpetuity,” Mrs Butterworth said.

“It started as something I’d do in my spare time, but it’s become something so much more urgent once it clicked that next year is our 100th anniversary.”

“I figured if we’re going to go to the effort, it should be for a big event.”

Mrs Butterworth had hoped for the bulk of the work to be completed last year, but unfortunately COVID hampered her ability to travel and gather information.

“A lot of the work’s been very dry research, pouring over microfiche in the Burdekin Library,” Mrs Butterowrth said.

“I’d hoped to go to the State Library in Brisbane, but it

tasked with colouring-in the photographs before printing, a meticulous task requiring detailed hand painting of sepia photographs.

“There was a lot of work involved in that. We had all the printing of the photographs to do and the colouring of the photographs. In those days, you didn’t have colour film, so I would colour them in with oil paints,” says Beatty.

“One of the jobs was spotting, because no matter how careful you were with the negative, the tiniest spot

would become really large on the photograph. We had to learn how to use a very fine brush to fix those spots.

“We’d also sit with the negatives and fix up with a pencil anything that was a flaw in that negative. If there was a little white spot, we could fix it up. I had a lot of jobs like that,” she remembers.

She says that when the owner of the studio, Mr Murray died, and many of the staff members had left, a lot of the responsibility fell on her to run the hands-on preparation of the photographs, a challenging period for the young woman.

When she was 22, she decided to leave the studio, getting a job at the original Woolworths Variety Store in Ayr and running her own counter.

“I was on stationery, which suited me fine because I was always writing things. That was where I worked until I left to get married. I married a farmer in 1956. I didn’t go back to work after that,” she says.

“We met at a dance. The Caledonian Hall was where everybody met their match.

“Sometimes the boys would be standing in a group eyeing off the girls they were going to dance with,” laughs Beatty.

“We’d also all go to the Delta Cinema.”

Her love of art is something that stayed with her

throughout her married years, and she’s become known in the community’s artistic circles for her miniature paintings and pastel creations.

She’s been a member of the Burdekin Art Society for forty years and has had her work displayed several times at the Perc Tucker Regional Gallery in Townsville.

“The first painting I did was an oil painting of Mount Kelly,” says Beatty.

“I was also known for my paintings of cane fires. Those would always sell very quickly if they were put on display,” she says.

As a young woman, when she wasn’t painting, she was heavily involved in sport, moving around the state to compete in tennis and vigoro

burdekinlocal.com.au competitions, a sport popular with women that combined elements of tennis and cricket.

“We would play tennis on private courts in those days, and that’s how everyone met.

“Vigoro was very popular.

We had a big field where the church on Beach Road is,” she says.

“We played in Ipswich and Toowoomba and Brisbane, or we would go up to Cairns.

“I’m always writing and like to remember these things,” says Beatty.

Along with spotlighting people’s personal experience at many of the Burdekin Singers most famous performances, Mrs Butterworth is also hoping to shine some light on some of the organisation’s unsung heroes.

“Bunny Smith who was a very talented tenor, he performed in most of our

earlier shows when we were still doing Gilbert and Sullivan, he was a huge influence in moving from a choral group to a performance group,” Mrs Butterworth said.

“Of course Pat Nuttal as well, she started producing for us when we were doing theatre restaurants and I think she’s produced about 35 of our 58 productions.”

The book will chart

the entire history of the organisation from the humble origins as a choir in 1922, all the way through each decade to the modern era.

“There’ll be a list of all our performances, and ideally we’re hoping to get the names and photographs of people from those performances,” Mrs Butterworth said.

“We’re hoping to include a lot of people’s personal stories,

so if someone was involved in one of those shows, we want them to write it down and contact me so they can be included.”

Italian Festival’s return set to celebrate vibrant adopted culture Daniel Shirkie HAILED as an ‘important regional cultural event’, the Australian Italian Festival is set to return after going missing in action during last year’s COVID-19 imposed lockdown.

The annual event celebrates all things Italy, whether it’s food, cultural practices or the migrant Italian heartland of North Queensland.

The Festival was due to enjoy it’s 26th year in 2020 after a successful 25th Anniversary in 2019, but has gone back to the drawing board for their 2021 return, according to newly crowned Director Dr Ann Vardanega.

“Like everyone else, we had to cancel the festival last year,” Dr Vardanega said.

“It’s been very hard, I came on as the new Director in February of last year and off the high of our 25th

Anniversary the year before, hoping to continue all the good work everyone has done.”

Despite the unfortunate cancellation last year, the committee is full steam ahead for this year’s iteration of the festival, while paying homage to the work of those who came before.

“Originally, the event was conceived as a way to bring visitors into the area, but the choice to hold an Italian Festival, as opposed to other festivals or events, was based on the huge cultural demographic here,” Dr Vardanega said.

“It is estimated that 70 per cent of the population in our district have some type of Italian heritage. The Festival’s run by a very dedicated group of volunteers who are mostly Italian.”

Dr Vardanega, who’s been involved with prior festivals

in a smaller capacity, says everything that goes on behind the scenes can be challenging, but is all worth it when the big day comes.

“It’s hard work, but like any festival, when it all comes together, the enjoyment and the atmosphere really carries

it,” Dr Vardanega said.

Among the many attractions aiming to draw people to the Italian Festival in Ingham are the vibrant foods and historical practices of the European nation.

“Our festival is really centred around food,

entertainment and of course, traditional competitions,” Dr Vardanega said.

“We have competitions from the Italian Medieval Ages, we have gondola races and of course pasta and pizza eating competitions.”

“It all links back to that vibrant culture.”

The Festival’s annual food stalls will of course return, with the committee’s own stall supplying fresh, homemade Italian delicacies throughout the event.

“It’s all home-cooked, made by our local cooks, they

actually pre-prepare arancini and the sauces for the pastas, all the Italian sausages, polenta and cannolis, all the staples of Italian food,” Dr Vardanega said.

Among the other attractions will be traditional dancers, and a homunculus theatre, with an accompanying workshop for those interested in learning about behind the scenes.

The Australian Italian Festival will be held across the June 6 and 7 weekend, in Ingham at TYTO Parklands.

Car lovers to head to the Whitsundays for latest motor show Daniel Shirkie DEVOTED car lovers will get another chance soon to show their appreciation for all things that travel fast at the upcoming Whitsundays Car Club’s Car and Bike Display.

Members from the group were on deck at the recent Ayr Car and Motorbike Show and were eager to see visitors from the regions travel after seeing the number of incredible vehicles on show, despite the delays caused by rain.

Chris Coyte, a member of the Whitsundays Car Cruisers Club, says the event is poised to be bigger than ever before,

thanks to a new venue, and an influx of travellers from across the region.

“This is our sixth year running a car show and we’re already seeing 25 - 30 percent more cars than we had last time out,” Mr Coyte said.

“The numbers have been pretty consistent before, so it’s exciting, we’re excited to be back.”

“We had to ditch the whole thing last year, so it’s really good to get it going again.”

According to Mr Coyte, travellers have already signed up from Rockhampton, the Burdekin, Cairns, Townsville and elsewhere to make the

trip to Airlie Beach for the show itself.

“People are coming in from all over, which is really good to see,” Mr Coyte said.

“Normally, we have about 150 people signed up to show their cars and those are on display all over the weekend, but this year we’ll be opening up to the public for displays.”

In addition to the event’s return and the new visitors, there will also be new surroundings for the show this year, with the Coral Sea Marina set to be the backdrop for this year’s outing.

“It’s a really beautiful spot right on the edge of the marina, all the yachts will be in the background,” Mr Coyte said.

The show will begin on Friday, May 28 with a meet and greet in the evening, then get underway in earnest on Saturday from 8am.

Marina Trajkovich THE Museum of Tropical Queensland has reopened its doors recently, launching new, updated exhibitions following a year’s renovations hiatus amid the coronavirus pandemic.

Following extensive roof restorations, museum curators are pleased to open the museum’s doors once more, announcing new and updated exhibition’s free of charge for the Burdekin community.

Queensland Museum Network CEO Dr Jim Thompson says staff are once more pleased to open the museum’s doors.

“Our teams are looking forward to reconnecting with visitors in person and inviting them to rediscover all their favourite things inside the museum,” said Mr Thompson.

“The roof works have been completed, and we’d like to thank the community for

their patience,” he said.

Among exciting new changes is the revamping of the maritime archaeology exhibit, which features recovered items from the HMS Pandora, the ill-fated British Royal Navy warship that set out for the Pacific in search of pirated bounty and its mutineers.

The shipwreck has been dubbed one of the most significant maritime archaeology finds in the Southern Hemisphere, and new items in the Museum of Tropical Queensland include the famed locks believed to have shackled the mutineers, on display for the first time.

This week saw the opening of the museum’s Ancient Rome: The Empire that Shaped the World exhibition, showcasing replica art, machines and technology from the famous era.

Created by the internationally acclaimed Artisans of Florence, Italy, the exhibition is made up of

over 50 displays, including frescoes, catapults, armour, busts and weapons, all reconstructed from ancient Roman records.

“Visitors will be entertained whilst learning just how much we have inherited from this great Empire with many of the objects and concepts still a part of our contemporary life,” Dr Thompson said.

Artisans of Florence Director Thomas Rizzo said the exhibition really resonates in regional communities where practical innovation, teamwork and community is key to success.

“It’s a testament to the Roman Empire’s lasting impact on our modern world and way of life, and the practical can-do attitude of the Romans,” Mr Rizzo said.

BURDEKIN CATHOLIC HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS TEACH SIGN LANGUAGE DURING STORYTIME

YEAR eight students from Burdekin Catholic High School have visited St Francis recently as part of an ongoing program that teaches AUSLAN sign language to younger students.

The year eight AUSLAN class, who have been learning sign language as part of their Language Other Than English (LOTE) curriculum, recently visited St Francis Catholic School Year 1 students, translating picture books into sign language and sharing what they’ve learnt.

Burdekin Catholic High School’s Inclusive Practices teacher, Sandra Flanagan, says the year eights have been doing an incredible job picking up the language and learning more about the deaf community and inclusivity.

“Our school was looking for a way to share the Year 8 students’ knowledge of

AUSLAN with others. We also wanted the Year 8 students to realise the importance of being positive role models to our younger community members,” says Ms Flanagan of organising the excursion.

“Our Year 8 students were quite nervous about presenting to the Year 1 students, but it was such a wonderful experience for them.

“They were left feeling very proud of themselves and were so pleased that they were able

Schools celebrate National Boarding Week

Marina Trajkovich SCHOOLS in Townsville are participating in the annual Boarders’ Run Australia, with over 130 students from Townsville Grammar School getting ready to celebrate National Boarding Week.

Townsville Grammar School’s Director of Boarding and National Director and Queensland Chair of the Australian Boarding Schools Association, Mr Jaye Beutel, said the event is a great way to recognise the countries boarding community.

“Each of our boarders will run a kilometre, as will every other boarder in the country, making the combined distance similar to the circumference of Australia.

“It’s a fun way to recognize the significant contribution boarding schools make to families across our vast nation,” said Mr Beutel.

“The annual Boarders’ Run is a fun event where

we can raise the profile of those students who generally have no other reasonable alternative to access education other than boarding school,” he said.

The Boarders Run will take place at the Bill Muller Oval on the school’s North Ward campus with other activities arranged for throughout the week.

There will be a boarders versus day students touch football tournament, an outdoor movie night and a ‘Do it for Dolly,’ fundraiser, raising money for Dolly’s Dream, an organisation that raises awareness of childhood bullying and youth suicide.

“National Boarding Week is a time to acknowledge and celebrate the fantastic efforts and commitment from our boarders, boarding staff, and schools across the country in providing this essential service to rural and remote families in Australia,” said Mr Beutel.

She says that the year 1’s at St Francis were extremely attached to their student teachers and that it was great to watch her students confidently interpret the picture books.

“As a teacher, it was quite emotional to watch them interact with the other students. They were so engaged and developed instant rapports with the Year 1s.

“The Year 1 students were so enthusiastic about learning a new language and were very excited to share with everyone which new Auslan signs they had learnt,” says Ms Flanagan.

BCHS has been running AUSLAN classes for the last three years, getting great feedback from students who are learning more about inclusivity.

“The AUSLAN lessons involve the students in learning about the Deaf

Community and the language. Each lesson, the students learn a new set of AUSLAN signs, and by the end of the course, students are quite confident in communicating and presenting AUSLAN to a group,” says Ms Flanagan.

“Several of our Year 8 students were so excited about learning AUSLAN as they have people in their lives who are deaf or partially deaf, and they felt that they were now able to communicate

with them more effectively and with more confidence.

“This has promoted inclusivity for our students as they are so keen to put their newly learnt skills into practice. Many of our students have also been teaching their family members how to sign AUSLAN,” she says.

Ms Flanagan says that due to the success and positive feedback from the St Francis excursion, BCHS aims to continue these AUSLAN learning events.

“Events like these are crucial to promoting inclusivity,” she says.

“We are also hoping to get members of the deaf community to come and visit our Auslan classes to help our students gain a small glimpse into what it’s like to live with a hearing impairment and learn ways that they can help and support our deaf community.”

Students invited to eat like a refugee for a week

Marina Trajkovich SCHOOLCHILDREN and teachers are invited to eat like a refugee, raising muchneeded funds to help children and families threatened by conflict and disaster around the world.

The Ration Challenge, started by not for profit humanitarian organisation Act For Peace, is a powerful and thought-provoking fundraising initiative that empowers Australian students to stand in solidarity with children who are living as refugees in other countries.

It invites school ages children to eat like a refugee during the week leading up to

World Refugee Day from the 14th to the 19th June.

Every student registered by their teacher will receive a ration pack in the mail, containing the same rations, in the same quantities, as those distributed to Syrian refugees in camps in Jordan – just a small amount of rice, beans, chickpeas, lentils, fish, oil and flour.

Ben Littlejohn, The Ration Challenge co-founder at Act for Peace, encourages school students to get involved.

“By taking the Ration Challenge, students will raise money that will help save lives now by providing emergency food, healthcare and support to people hit

hardest by this crisis,” said Littlejohn.

“By putting themselves in the shoes of a refugee for one week, they’ll learn about current global issues, develop empathy for others and feel empowered to make a difference in the world,” he said.

The Ration Challenge was established in 2014 and since then has captured the hearts and minds of more than 99 000 people who have taken part.

The schools program was launched in 2018, and since then, students and teachers have raised more than $1 million. So far this year, 50 schools have already

registered for the program.

“This year marks the 10th anniversary of the conflict in Syria. Since it started, more than half a million people have lost their lives, and millions more have been left in need of humanitarian assistance.

Holly Hunter-Calligaro Marina Trajkovich At just 23 years old, Holly Hunter-Calligaro is turning perfectly blow-dried heads in the world of hairdressing and is soon opening her very own salon with co-owner and fellow Burdekin girl Faith Williams.

The young hairdresser and colour specialist decided to move from Ayr to Brisbane after a solo trip to Europe inspired a change in scenery, getting a job at Faith’s popular salon Blondee.

It’s from there the duo decided to expand the business, opening a second salon in the popular suburb of Morningside a year later.

Burdekin Local News chats with Holly about the move to Brisbane and smashing business goals as she prepares to open her new salon in June.

Can you tell me a bit about growing up in Ayr? How did you decide to pursue hairdressing?

I come from a pretty big, tight-knit family.

When I was doing grade eleven work experience, I worked in my aunties beauty salon, and I just loved it. When I finished school, I had a lady open up a hair salon, and she said to me, ‘would you like to work with me and eventually start an apprenticeship?’

And I just thought, ‘why not.’ When I started, I just loved doing hair, so I never looked back.

What inspired your move to Brisbane?

I suppose before I travelled in 2019, I thought I would be settling down in Ayr, which obviously a lot of people do, but I think when I travelled Europe for six weeks by myself in 2019, I kind of realised that there was more out there for me. I really wanted to grow and build my career.

How does it feel to be in the midst of running your own business at 23?

I have always wanted to have my own salon, but I never thought it would be this soon! Just having a really nice relationship with Faith; she did come up to me around Christmas last year and said ‘Hey, how would you feel about running your own salon in maybe three months?’ I just said, ‘Ah, ok, sure, let’s do this!’ It’s nice that she could see that I was worthy of it.

I am excited; When we finally announced the new salon, we got so much support. I’m excited to get the store open and get to show all our clients the new space. I’m excited to have my own staff as well because I’ve never had that. I’m looking forward to training them up, so they feel how I felt when I first started.

What are you up to when you’re not working?

Even though I’m so grateful for everything I’ve been able to do in that town, I just needed to venture out, so basically, when I came back from Europe, I applied to work at Blondee and got accepted straight away. I just packed my bag and left.

Honestly, I think I’m always working! Other than that, I met a new partner eight months ago, and I’m super, super happy. I’m spending time with family and friends and just enjoying having a social life and connecting with everyone.

What was that move like and how did you settle into your new job?

How do you think growing up in the Burdekin has shaped you personally and professionally?

I was actually really nervous when I first started to be honest! I thought, well, I’m from a small town; people won’t even know where that is. But my boss is actually from the Burdekin as well. It was just really nice that she could see the potential in me but also the staff that started with me. It’s a matter of training and getting your confidence up.

I knew that if I moved to Brisbane, I only wanted to work in this salon. I’m so lucky to work in a salon where we do specialise in blondes, and it’s just furthered my skills and my career, and now I’m starting up my own!

I used to holiday in Brisbane all the time so living here hasn’t felt too different.

I definitely think it has shaped me. My family has always owned a lot of businesses, and I think working at such a young age has taught me that if you work hard, you’ll always be rewarded.

When I came to work with Faith, I just worked so hard, I’m always wanting to help out, and I definitely think that coming from a country town makes you appreciate that. It’s nice to be recognised, and I definitely thank all my family and previous employers for shaping me.

Katherine Falco has been creating custom headpieces for the Burdekin’s race days for eighteen years.

Made by a milliner Marina Trajkovich LOCAL milliner Katherine Falco has always had a creative streak, so when neighbours and friends asked her to create custom headpieces for their own racewear outfits, the vivacious artisan couldn’t resist.

Her talents and design skills garnered her a name among the towns most fashion-forward, and eighteen years on, she’s built herself a successful accessory and millinery business, winning several awards and turning well-adorned heads at race days around Australia.

“I’ve always loved the crafty side of things. My grandmother and mother were always good at sewing, so I think I inherited that

from there,” says Katherine.

“I was living in Giru at the time I started making them, and a local woman there asked if I could make her a headpiece for the races, and that’s how it all started,” she says.

“People saw my work, and it just took off from there. I started doing custom orders for people going to the local races, or going up to Townsville, Brisbane, Melbourne.”

Now, working from her colourful and feather-filled, home studio in Home Hill, Katherine reflects on how her initial hobby for jewellery making and crafts bloomed into a thriving new career.

“I did realise that I loved the fashion side of things, and I think that’s why I’ve stuck

with it for so long.

“I was self-taught in the beginning. And then word got out; I was eventually stocking about eight stores which was crazy, I didn’t get much sleep at that time!”

The popular milliner’s passion for design and the craft grew, picking up more and more clients for custom pieces and improving her knowledge of the trade through workshops and online lessons.

When she’s not creating show-stopping pieces for race day, she’s designing other accessories and headpieces for weddings and events, custom pieces that suit a woman’s individual personality and style.

“I love making women feel good about themselves

when they come here. I’ll create something to suit that particular person, whether it’s matching something to their eyes or a particular colour that looks amazing on them,” says Katherine.

“Some women have been through cancer treatments or have lost hair through illnesses, and I’ll design something that makes them feel confident. There really is so much to it.

“I do get a lot out of making people feel good about themselves so they can go have fun at the races.”

Katherine says that this year, race-wear fashions have taken a minimalistic turn, with requests for ‘less is more’ headwear in subtle but stylish designs.

“The trends have changed

a lot, it used to be the bigger, the better, but now pieces have become quite subtle,” says Katherine.

“I love antique retro styles as well, and I usually sway towards that style,” she says.

“Sometimes, it’s the materials that will inspire me.

It’s usually when I’m about to go to sleep that ideas will come into my head, and I’ll

be able to envision how I’m going to do something.

“I’ve realised I do have that creative mind that doesn’t really switch off!”

Items range from crystal he’s sourced himself, exploring the Kimberley in Western Australia or during his years at Mount Isa, to tooth encrusted dinosaur fossils.

There’s also some local finds, a crystalised piece of coal with hardened coral growing off it found on Alva Beach and gifted to him for his collection sixty years ago.

“There are places you can go to collect, some rocks as big as this place, beautiful huge pink rocks in Western

Australia. I’ve been all around Australia,” he says from his garage and make-shift museum.

“I also have mates who collect things for me,” says Doug.

The hobby even turned into a crafty business for

Doug and his wife Helen, who would print images onto polished stones to be sold at Gemfest, a festival held near the sapphire fields of Anakie Queensland, where thousands of crystal enthusiasts gather every year to explore.

“She used to help me collect,” says Doug of his wife Helen.

“I just love anything that comes out of the ground.”

Doug’s rocky road Marina Trajkovich DOUG Henricks from Home Hill has always had a passion for geology, fascinated by rocks and their many forms, colours and shapes, a hobby that’s taken him all over Australia in search of new additions to his collection.

Now 83, he’s been collecting crystals and rock formations for almost 60 years, a striking fact that reveals itself as you walk through his Home Hill home and impressive displays.

“I’ve just always been into rocks; I always was a rock nut,” says Doug laughing.

“It’s a good interest; they’re very interesting. I just like the colours I think. Other people have taught me a lot,” he says.

He explains the stories behind some of his treasures,

picking up from one of his garden beds, the item that kicked off his fascination in Mount Isa in 1963, a smooth piece of opalised wood.

“I’ve still got it with me after all this time,” says Doug.

“I remember finding it out the back of the Mount Isa Mines.

“It’s an addictive hobby; I don’t smoke, I don’t drink, you’ve got to have a hobby,” he says.

Researchers call for more study of ADHD in girls Marina Trajkovich ATTENTION, Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, has long been associated with young, energetic boys. But it’s a condition that also affects girls, albeit slightly differently.

Knowing the differences in how ADHD impacts both boys and girls can be crucial in identifying behaviours and helping children and parents identify the condition.

ADHD is best understood as a neurodevelopmental disorder that can manifest itself in different ways, like experiencing difficulty in sustaining attention and resisting distraction. It can also present as difficulty in adapting energy levels to suit a particular situation, for example, a classroom setting.

A young person with ADHD might display hyperactive and impulsive symptoms, like fidgeting and squirming, or they might frequently leave their seat in class.

Attention deficits could display in things like careless mistakes or when a child has difficulty staying attentive

in class. The opposite, hyperfocus when a child is intensely fixated on an activity, can also be a symptom.

ADHD diagnosis About 1 in 20 Australians are experiencing ADHD, with the condition often underdiagnosed and poorly understood.

Experts say that many signs and symptoms of ADHD are normal in children to an extent, with a diagnosis of the condition dependent on factors like a child’s age and whether the behaviours they’re exhibiting match their level of development.

A child will only be diagnosed with ADHD if their trouble focusing is having a significant detriment on several aspects of their life like their schooling, home or social life.

According to ADHD Australia, the child must also be displaying signs that persist for more than six months and before the age of twelve.

ADHD in boys and girls Rachael Murrihy, the Director of The Kidman Centre, Faculty of Science, University of Technology Sydney, says that a growing body of research is examining whether there are differences between the displayed behaviours between boys and girls with ADHD. “Researchers have only recently started to unravel the expression of ADHD in girls. The way ADHD presents in girls and boys is in many ways similar, but there are a few noteworthy differences,” wrote Ms Murrihy for the Conversation.

“Most importantly, while symptoms of hyperactivityimpulsivity are present across genders, with some studies showing more hyperactivity in boys, symptoms of inattention, which can be easier to overlook, are seen more frequently in girls,” she says.

She adds that the onset of ADHD symptoms can differ between genders, with symptoms of hyperactivity presenting earlier in school

life. Inattentiveness, by contrast, has been seen to present later in life.

“So girls with ADHD can often go undetected until academic and organisational demands increase in late primary and high school.

“Girls with ADHD are also at higher risk of developing depression and anxiety than boys. If depression and anxiety occur at the same time as ADHD, it can be more difficult to diagnose ADHD,” says Ms Murrihy.

“A range of possible mechanisms have been implicated in the difference in ADHD expression between genders, from hormonal

changes to cognitive differences to social factors.

But we need more research to truly understand the reasons behind the disparity,” she says.

Seen as a ‘male condition,’ More than twice as many boys are diagnosed with ADHD than girls, with experts suggesting this could be due to persistent stereotypes regarding the condition as a ‘male disorder.’

Rachael Murrihy suggests that this could be due to a lack of understanding of how boys and girls experience the condition differently, with more research needed

to develop a framework inclusive of both genders.

“Some researchers have suggested symptom thresholds for diagnosis in girls should be modified,” she says.

“For many girls, ADHD is a serious and debilitating illness. Ensuring girls are identified early and accurately and that they receive evidence-based treatment is crucial.”

A NEW set of physical activity guidelines for pregnant women has been released by the Australian Government Department of Health this month to help expectant mothers stay healthy.

The guidelines come from new research led by CQUniversity and the University of Queensland and provide a framework for exercise during the period of pregnancy and postpartum.

Lead author and researcher Professor Wendy Brown from the University of Queensland said that the guidelines highlight recommended activity levels based on prepregnancy fitness levels.

She says that pregnant women who were active before pregnancy can continue with physical activity, altering their exercise routines over the course of the pregnancy.

“If you were inactive before pregnancy, start slowly and build up your activity to meet the recommendations,” Professor Brown said.

“As your body changes during pregnancy, you may need to adapt your activities. Listen to your body and chat with your health professional for more help,” she said.

Experts recommend that pregnant women discuss exercise options with their doctors in order to stay healthy with the new guidelines working to further the understanding of health practitioners.

PROPONENTS of CopperString 2.0, the high-voltage transmission line to connect the North West Minerals Province to the National Electricity Market near Townsville, have welcomed reforms to extend the reach and life of the Northern Australia Infrastructure Facility (NAIF).

CuString Chief Executive Officer Joseph O’Brien said the company was well advanced in its discussions with NAIF, the Australian Government’s dedicated lender to infrastructure projects and businesses in northern Australia, for what is expected to be NAIF’s largest loan.

“The Government’s review identified some reforms to make NAIF more effective.

It is good news for Northern Australia and game-changing infrastructure projects such

as CopperString, that the Parliament has passed these reforms,” Mr O’Brien said.

“As far as we’re concerned, the extension of NAIF for a further five years to 2026 is welcomed as their long-term debt is critical for major infrastructure.

“We’re motivated to finalise our NAIF arrangements and move into construction of CopperString, which is expected for completion in 2024.

“Like NAIF, CopperString will be a catalyst for significant industry and investment growth, so broadening the scope of projects that NAIF can support is also very welcomed.

“North Queensland can experience a boom as the world transitions to an electrified economy. We need major infrastructure investment to unlock this potential. That is good news

Sugar • Market anticipation of the latest Brazilian crop numbers saw raw sugar prices soar to record contract highs of 18.25 USc/lb on Tuesday before the rally became too overwhelming and crashed back down below 17 US cents, closing the week at 16.96 USc/lb.

• Bullish sentiment appeared to push speculators into pre-emptive buying the day before the fortnightly UNICA (Brazilian Sugarcane Industry Association) report was released as many expected weak sugar data and a further reduction in the cane crop. The actual results did not disappoint, as every category was significantly below last year’s figures. The cane crop as at 1 May 2021 was 25.44% lower than the same time last year at 45.259 million tonnes and sugar 28.51% lower at 2.148 million tonnes.

• The bullish news from the UNICA report was overshadowed however by the US Consumer Price Index (CPI – see our Jargon Buster) data release on the same day. The CPI printed at 4.2%, significantly above the expected 3.6% which sparked fears into investors of anticipated higher interest rates. All commodities across the board were lower as investors withdrew the money from the asset class.

New aquatic weed composting techniques improve soil health and crop yield NQ Dry Tropics NQ DRY TROPICS is working with five farmers to turn aquatic weeds sourced from local creeks into compost.

The aim is to turn problem weeds into a valuable on-farm resource, through cost-effective means, while controlling weeds in waterways.

Respected agro-ecologist David Hardwick of Soil Land Food, has been contracted to guide the growers through the composting process.

“My role is to show farmers how to make compost on-farm using low-cost, local resources that can be used in their soil for production benefits and soil health benefits,” Mr Hardwick said.

“Farmers are hesitant to use compost because of the price, and the cost of freight is an additional barrier.

“The approach being trialed is a fermentation compost, also known as a minimum or no-turn compost.

“Fermentation is where you mix your ingredients and add a bacterial inoculum to the compost heap, and then cover it to allow it to compost in a lowoxygen environment.

“It’s different from a normal turned compost because it uses a lot less resources, time, water and machinery to achieve a really good quality compost.

“Compost needs two main ingredients, called feedstock, carbon and nitrogen. The wood mulch is the carbon source and the water weeds are the nitrogen source.”

NQ Dry Tropics Waterways, Wetlands and Coasts Team Leader Scott Fry said the trial would not have been possible without funding support from the

Queensland Governments’ Natural Resource Investment Program, and in-kind donations from Burdekin Shire Council and Lower Burdekin Water.

They have provided the feedstock for the project.

“Council has donated mulch from its waste transfer facility and has provided access to aquatic weeds from the local creek systems,” Mr Fry said.

“Lower Burdekin Water is donating excavator time to remove the weeds from the creeks, and loading it onto trucks to be taken to participating farms.”

Growers have also made their own microbial inoculant for the compost.

“Making the inoculant is pretty straight forward using ingredients purchased from a local store,” Mr Fry said.

“The microbes do all the hard work

breaking down the feedstock and converting it into a high grade compost.

“When forming the compost piles, we wet them to about 60 per cent moisture and the microbes are diluted and spread through the piles.”

The composting process will take about five months, and will be trialed on a range of crops to improve soil structure to help the sandier soils hold water for longer.

Third-generation farmer Gary Spotswood is participating in the trial.

After experimenting with compost for a few years he said he was keen to trial a static compost pile.

“The idea of utilising everything that you have in your backyard such as water hyacinth and other aquatic weeds, is not only practical in terms of producing your own compost, but potentially will also be cost effective,” Mr Spotswood said.

“Being organic farmers, traceability is critical. We need to justify what product we use, and how and when we use it.

“Using a locally sourced natural resource to convert into a high quality compost is appealing. It means potentially reducing our use of conventional organic fertilisers and also reducing costs.

“David Hardwick’s input has been valuable. He’s been great in explaining how to manage the composting process in accordance with Australian composting standards, and the tests we can do to verify our organic standards.”

The project is part of NQ Dry Tropics’ Reducing Burdekin Sediment project, funded through the Queensland Government’s Natural Resource Investment Program.

Currency • US Dollar strength saw the Australian Dollar trend downwards for the majority of the week from its high on Monday at 78.91 US cents to the low on Thursday of 76.88 US cents.

On Friday night NQ Green Solutions solved the problem many have with finding something fun to do in the evening. The solution came in the form of social bowls with everyone having a good time. The winners for the night were the awesome foursome comprising Pat Herd, Brenton Trezise, Loretta and John Mauro. Second went to Morgan Soper and Heather Jorgensen, who prevailed in a tight contest.

The Bradman’s prize went to the lucky foursome of Kim and Dave Harding, and Margaret and Ross McLaughlin. Next Friday there

will be no bowls played.

Three A pairs matches were contested. Dave Brown and Rob Garner got their noses in front, then were able to hold off the late challenge from Vince Beitia and Alan Garioch, to claim the victory.

Chris and Simon Griggs held their nerve to grind to dust any chance that Richard Mau and Leo Kenny had in winning their match. Peter Jorgensen and Joe Ypinazar had to pull all their tricks out to defeat the plucky challenge put up by Doug Kiehne and Ray Paneccasio The other matches on Sunday, saw the pair of Henry Hazel and Peter Henderson just do enough to finish on top of Doug Robins and Len Feeney. The trio of Ross McLaughlin, Dan O’Shea, and Steve Nellestein, put in a dominant second third of the match which proved to be enough to defeat the challenge put up by the trio of Norm Storrie, Jamie Woods and Gary Pearce.

Next Sunday the 23rd the Oats Memorial fours will be contested.

Rinks teams from many clubs will contest the event which will feature some of the best bowlers in the Townsville district. Burdekin Skips are putting up the prize money for this event. This is an all day, event. As a result, there will be no social bowls this weekend coming.

SILVERLINKS READYING FOR ‘TOUGH’ BATTLE Daniel Shirkie BURDEKIN Silverlinks coach Cara Trindle is feeling good ahead of her side’s premiership tilt this Saturday.

After waiting with bated breath throughout the last semi-final, the local side now have an opponent in mind after punching their ticket to the grand final in the first round of the semis.

The Runaways downed the Saints in this week’s Monday night match-up to ensure they’d be the ones that take on Burdekin for the title, and Trindle is already looking toward Saturday’s blockbuster with anticipation.

“We had our training on Monday night and we spoke about who we might be facing, because the semifinal hadn’t finished up until afterwards,” Trindle said.

“We haven’t seen the Runaways since March, so it’s been a long while since we’ve played against one another.”

“We know it’s going to be a really tough match coming up against them, particularly

because we haven’t met them on court in so long.”

That previous match, in which the Silverlinks were beaten by a single point, will provide plenty of motivation, and ample opportunities for learning in the lead-up to Saturday’s fixture.

“We’re lucky we’ve got a bit of video we can look back at and go through and think about what we need to do,” Trindle said.

Last time the two sides met the Silverlinks were missing two of their key players and lost their main shooter to

injury just a few moments into the game, making the prospect of a rematch even more exciting for the Burdekin grand finalists.

“We were missing two of our players the last time we played the Runaways, and our shooter was injured in the first three minutes, so she missed the majority of that game and only came back on later,” Trindle said.

“That really showed that we’ve got some depth, and we’re really excited to show off what we couldn’t show off last time.”

“We only lost by one point, so it’s pretty exciting to know that we’ve got those players to come back in and our shooter as well for the full game this time.”

Saturday’s match-up will take place before the Hart Sapphire series match between the Northern Mendi Rays and the Brisbane North Cougars, providing further fuel for the Silverlinks.

“It’s definitely going to be good for us, it’s always good to be the curtain-raiser for the Hart Sapphire series,” Trindle said.

“We’re pretty excited about playing before the Rays, we’ve got two girls that are in that squad, so we’re pretty pumped up to show them what we’re made of.”

On Sunday 9th May the club had a small field of golfers for some great meat trays provided by captain, James Johnson.

The winner on the day was Guysie LeBlowitz with 38 points.

The runner up was John Power on 37 after a countback from Simon Davies. Megan Barbagallo and Keven Chatfield were the winners of the pin shots.

Wednesday 12th saw a field of 12 playing for the Crown Hotel prize up for grabs. The winner on the day was Carol Betteridge with 77 nett after a countback from Bev MacDonald runner up and Val Smith. The pin shot was won

by Judi Sheehan and the chip shot was taken out by Beth Prescott.

Carol had a good day and also won the raffle. Next week the ladies will be playing for Carol’s prize.

On Friday 14th the winner of the day was Glenn Berryman. The winner with the least putts was Ronnie Nielsen with an impressive 9 putts. The pin shots went to Lloyd Sheppard, Stephen Doig and Beth Prescott. Ray Collinson’s name was drawn out of the bucket for a chance to win the $250 and he found the yellow ball. Congrats Ray. This week’s jackpot is back to $100.

Sunday 16th saw the club holding the 27 hole RLA Partners Closed

Championships. The A Grade men’s winner was Scott Sibson with 108 Gross, with Bevan MacElroy the runner up on 114 Gross. The nett winners were Simon Power on 107 and Murray Cannavan the runner up on 108.

In B Grade men, Tim Branch was the Gross winner on 123 and Greg MacElroy was the runner up on 126. Guysie LeBlowitz was the winner of the Nett prize with Clark Grogan the runner up.

C Grade saw a runaway winner in Ray Collinson on 129 Gross with James Johnson the runner up on 136. Mark Dale took out the Nett winner’s prize with 109 and Peter Dale was runner up on 112.

In the Ladies Division One section, Emily Cannavan was the winner on 127 Gross. Amanda Gees was the runner up on 131. Megan Barbagallo was the Nett winner on 113 with Carol Betteridge the runner up on 119 after a countback from Bev MacDonald.

Jan Cannavan was the ladies Division Two winner with a Gross score of 158. The runner up was Mary Chatfield on 167. The Nett winner was Laraine Sgroi on 118 with Jeanette Camer close on her heals with 119 claiming the runner up prize.

Footy Tips “The Magic Round” is over and what an awesome weekend of football. Huge crowds at every game enjoyed the atmosphere but not the loads of controversy with all the penalties, sin bins, players put on report and players being sent off! Three players sent off, 14 were sin-binned, and 24 put on report — big night for the judiciary. Stop the headshot, sure!

Absolutely we should, but sometimes there needs to be a little bit of tolerance. It’s a tough contact sport. Be patient and controlled or we will be watching teams playing with 11 players or less.

Congratulations to Parramatta and the Warriors. They played it tough, and not one player on report or sent off.

Moon Man COWBOYS v Knights Both teams were magic round losers. The Cowboys tried hard against the Roosters but copped a strange sin bin penalty that completely destroyed their momentum. This resulted in a romp in the park for Roosters.

Knights were atrocious without the leadership and motivation of Ponga. With Ponga out again and Mitchell Pearce still on the sideline, let’s hope it’s another rudderless performance from the Knights. A decisive WIN for the COWBOYS, especially if they reproduce the first-half form of last weekend.

The Roosters were given a boost when Kali Nauque who was moved to lock burrowed over after five minutes and with Joel Masons conversion the visitors lead six nil.

Play see sawed for the next twenty minutes with the Roosters putting it to the strong Crushers team who scored two tries to lead 10 – 6.

Penalties and dropped ball by the Roosters then gave the home side plenty of ball and they used it well to lead 28 – 14 at the break.

In this period promoted winger Jared Thorley had crossed for two good tries, one from a great kick by Riley Horan.

With the River hanging onto the ball and the Burdekin not tackling plus dropping whatever possession they had the second half was a procession to the try line by the highly fancied Ingham team.

On Friday night at home against Warriors the Reserve Women won 5-2 but the Premier Women lost 0-5. In Townsville the Funkies beat v Olympic 2-0. On Saturday at International Park the 2nd Division beat Brothers 3-1, the Reserves won 1-0 but the Premiers lost 2-4.

At International Park against Brothers the Kalamia Hotel Premiers played well in the first half but was a goal down at half time. After the break Brothers scored two more goals and looked to have the match sewn up. Ryan Scodellaro and Elliott Dal Santo then scored two quick goals and with Brothers down to ten men after their goalkeeper was sent off, it was game on. The Austral Masonry Funkies were away to Olympic. Burdekin took the lead after 36 minutes when Mark Grasso opened the scoring. The lead was doubled 6 minutes later when Grasso scored his second to make it 2-0 to Burdekin at the break. Burdekin controlled the game well for most of the second half and didn’t allow Olympic any real chances until the final 10 minutes when Olympic got back into the game. Burdekin managed to keep a clean sheet and get their first win of the season.

Despite being equal with 23 wins each, the Dragons have five stars and three

of their big forwards unavailable, so I think the SHARKS can WIN if they keep their heads in the game.

TITANS v Bulldogs This could be the most boring game of the round unless both teams lift their game. Both teams really need to get into the battle, but with the Titans at home and the 4 - 6 winning record, I believe they will have more punch through the middle and on the edges for the Dogs. TITANS to WIN and do it easily at home.

ROOSTERS v Broncos Following a 50 - 6 loss to the Sea Eagles last week and a 46 – 6 loss to the Eels three weeks ago, I really can’t see the Broncos matching it with any of the Top 5 clubs.

It’s just a nightmare for Kevin Walters. Broncos are getting flogged by everyone, especially last week by Tommy Turbo

Raiders v STORM Raiders feel over the line last week against the hapless Dogs. It’s impossible to see them beating the red hot Storm in their current form. Especially as the Storm have a 33 14 win ratio over the Raiders.

Even at the Raiders home ground the Storm has a greater percentage win ratio of 68%. STORM to WIN easily, having won their last three games head to head.

Rabbitohs v PANTHERS There’s no way you could pick the Rabbits against the Panthers at the moment. Panthers destroyed the Dragons last week 44 - 18 on the back of a Nathan Cleary

PARRAMATTA v Manly The last game of the round will be a cracker! The Eels are on a five-game winning streak and are currently unbeaten at home against the Sea Eagles, who five weeks ago were in last place but now are sitting inside the Top 8.

At home with the Moses /Gutherson Show, I think the Eels will win, albeit in an arm wrestle in the middle seven on the edges with their dominant forwards.

Coach Ben Smith lost Jared Thorley to A Grade and he had been their best player to date this year. Many felt that had Thorley been there the result may have been different.

The team played for 30 minutes one man short when reserve back Jake Bowen received three ten minute sin bins for back chat.

They also lost momentum with five eight Max Cockrem sidelined with an ankle injury after five minutes.

Kade Harch was an influence when he came on and he can only benefit from the run as with Alex Lennox.

Last week the Hens tasted victory by two points with a last minute conversion but this week the tables were reversed with Herbert River winning by 2 points at 24 – 22.

In the first half the sides were very even till outstanding Hen Stephanie Monday was sin binned.

In that ten minutes the home side crossed for two tries to lead 14 – 6 at the break.

Hard running forward Jess Clift was injured in the first five minutes of the second half but she later returned.

The Hens then started to play as they can and put in tries through Stephanie Monday, Tamara White and Aleikah Heron and with Shakyra Carr and Jess Clift converting lead 22 – 14.

At this stage it looked like a Hens victory but then with a succession of penalties the Lady Crushers came back to score two tries, the last one converted to win the match.

Several of the rulings left the girls scratching heads as to the decisions.

The score would have been higher with the match called off with 10 minutes remaining due to an injury to a Crusher.

The Roosters slowed down second half after leading 30 nil at the break.

Several players stood out and they were just too fast for the Crushers team who tried hard but were outclassed.

Roosters fullback Cathane Hill was outstanding and scored two tries with speed and stepping.

Centre Callum Stevens was unstoppable and was rewarded with three tries.

Playing a strong match was five eight Declan Dowson who set up his backs well combining well with his half Rhett Williams.

Dowson played as though he had spiders on him making plenty of ground whenever.

The forwards outplayed and outmuscled their opposition with Braden Cotter, Ethan Roberts and Lachlan Shepherd standing out.

Tries came from Callum Stevens 3, Cathane Hill 2, Noah Keppah, Ethan Roberts and Kaleel Archer Declan Dowson kicked 4 goals.

The C.A Contracting Reserves found their groove against Warriors with impressive pace and combinations. Loz Barra scored 2 goals and Maddy Reid, Faith Nelson and Claudia Pavone each snagged a goal. The final score was 5-2.

This week is another big week for the Panthers. On Friday night in Townsville the Women’s Premiers and Reserves meet Saints and Funkies are at home to Estates White. On Saturday afternoon the 2nd Division play Saints in Townsville and then on Tuesday night the Premiers and Reserves play Saints in Townsville.

In the Juniors the Under 15 team won 5-4 against Saints with Sebastian Mio 4, Ethan Caltabiano getting the goals but the Under 12s lost 1-3 to Brothers, a great effort against the top side. This week both teams are in Townsville the U15s against Saints Red and the U12s against Rebels.

Monday Night Masters had a reasonable turn out and the Reds and Whites had a hard battle with the match ending in a 3-3 draw. For the Reds Ramon Oar, Mick Gabiola and Chris Wicks scored and for the Whites Steve Hagiaglou, Jeremy Dal Santo and Mick Lequerica all made the rigging hiss. Goalkeeper extraordinaire Drac Bryen was Player of the Week.

Last Friday Burdekin Catholic High School hosted the inaugural Catholic Schools Soccer Cup at International Park. Teams from Townsville, Mount Isa/Cloncurry, Proserpine and the Burdekin competed for the trophy in 2 divisions. In the Junior division Good Shepherd Catholic College/ St Joseph’s won the grand final 3-1 against Southern Cross Catholic College. The Senior Division was a much tighter affair with Burdekin Catholic High School going down to Southern Cross Catholic College 2-0. The carnival was a great success and will look to grow in size in the years to come.

Burdekin is hosting the U12 North Queensland Football Trials. at International Park next Sunday and Monday. Teams from Townsville, Thuringowa, Herbert River and the Whitsunday region

will take part as well as the most talented boys and girls from the Burdekin Shire. The side to contest the State Titles later in the year will then be selected. We not only have very talented players involved but local coaches and players, Leighton Gallagher and Chris Eadie, team up as the NQ Boys coach and manager in 2021.

In the A League, Melbourne City has won the Premier Plate and the fight is now on for the next five places and the finals. Two points separate Central Coast, Sydney, Adelaide and Macarthur with Brisbane and Western Sydney and further two points adrift. At the other end of the table either Melbourne Victory or Newcastle will be the wooden spooners.

SILVERLINKS READY TO BATTLE IT OUT

Clubs ride together for Giru Gymkhana Daniel Shirkie RIDING clubs from across the region saddled up and headed to Giru across the weekend for the Giru Pony Club’s Gymkhana event.

Representatives from Black Reach, Ayr, Home Hill and further afield were all in attendance as North Queensland’s best and brightest upcoming riders tested their skills at the courses on Piralko Road.

Giru Pony Club’s Treasurer Melissa Hudson says the club punched well above their weight in organising the two day competition.

“It was a fantastic weekend of events, it went off really well and it all came together very well, it was very well organised,” Ms Hudson said.

“The club with it’s few members, we’re only a group of thirty-five members, I think everyone worked super hard and they really pulled together a very strong event.”

A strong field of young riders turned out for the events, which also featured training and learning classes to kick off the event on Saturday, before moving onto events like the half hitch, mug races and timed showjumping.

“It’s really imperative for the kids to be out there exercising and being sociable, it’s so important to have them out on their horses,” Ms Hudson said.

“It’s always good to see them not just on their phones, but out there doing something constructive and working and training their horses, getting them ready for the bigger events.”

“It’s really important for the scene.”

Bolstering both the numbers and the discipline and training on display was the fact that the club have been able to weather the COVID-19 lockdown largely unscathed, with only big ticket events falling by the wayside due to the pandemic.

“We’ve been fairly lucky throughout the COVID lockdown, we’re basically socially distancing already and it’s all held outdoors, obviously, so for us it hasn’t been much of an impact,” Ms Hudson said.

“We lost some of our bigger events through that year like the other Gymkhanas, but we were able to keep a lot of our rallies and training days on schedule, so the kids came into this one pretty prepared.”

“We weren’t overly affected, which has been very good.”

According to Hudson and the other organisers on ground maintaining a record of what transpired, all of the competitors excelled across the two day event.

“There were a lot of kids that did really well, it’s hard to pick any one that did better than the other, I don’t think we need to single any one of them out, they all did really well and they all tried their best,” Ms Hudson said.

“Sometimes the person that gets the trophies isn’t the person that’s improved the most, and that’s what we like to highlight.”

The club, which often provides as many awards and certifications for effort and improvement as it does for pure wins on the numbers, was happy to see a committed field of invested riders turn up for the Gymkhana.

“We often reward the sportsmanship behind the sport as well as the winners, we like to give accolades to the kids that have tried the hardest, improved the most and showed good sportsmanship on the day,” Ms Hudson said.

“The camaraderie between the different clubs is great, we always say that our motto is that we ride for smoko and people come there for the food and the socialness, it’s not just about the competition.”

“It’s about getting together with your mates.”

The junior boys Red team are holding steady at the number six ranked spot in their age division with three wins and one loss to their record, while the Burdekin Roosters Blue are standing tall in the midway spot of the rankings with two wins, one draw and one loss.

Powerhouse Papalii to miss first Origin

Powerful Canberra Raiders and Maroons enforcer Josh Papalii will miss the first Origin bout this year after being handed a three-game suspension by the NRL judiciary following the Raiders match against the Bulldogs.

Former Cowboys veterans Ben Hannant, Kevin Campion, Jaiman Lowe, Brenton Bowen, John Doyle, and Scott Prince have been named among the roster of exLeague talent that will play at the end of the month.

The match will take place on May 29 at 6pm at Mt Isa’s Alec Inch Oval.
