THE cars won’t be the only stars on show at the upcoming Burdekin Auto Festival, with the Colt Seavers Band set to headline the event with their musical talents.

The well-travelled performers, who’ve shared stages with some of Australia’s most beloved rock musicians, will provide live entertainment throughout the two-day event set to take place at the end of April.

The musicians, who bill themselves as ‘Rockabilly Stunt Performers’ thanks to their unique take on live entertainment, were

formulated by their leading man’s background as a film and tv stunt performer.

“We are a fun band but serious about entertaining people,” Seavers said.

Despite a song list composed of aged classics, the performers have been enjoying a refreshed audience at many of their recent shows, noting many young faces in the crowd.

“I think a lot of people have never seen a Double Bass before, but most of our crowd are very young, and it’s brought back the Bluegrass and Hillbilly music, and we play anything - Countrybilly, Rockabilly and Bluesabilly,” Seavers said.

Artists like The Rolling Stones, Johnny Cash and Chuck Berry will be among those covered during the event.

Manager Samantha Dickens says the band never skimps on the energy level during their performances.

“We play to the crowd and bring the party to the dance floor; everyone knows we all need it after these tough times of late,” Ms Dickens said.

“One thing’s for sure; you’ll never forget the Colt Seavers Band.”

The band’s talent for stunts often leaves room for falls, spills and sometimes, flames during their performances.

there thing was when they set Colt on fire, and then Trent fell off the drum kit,” Ms Dickens laughs.

Ms Dickens says the band has already taken their talents to car and bike festivals across the country, with several other performances across musical festivals as well, and is always keen to ‘keep the crowd guessing’.

“We’ve played at a lot of car festivals and really any type of festival, we’re a band that’s really made to get the party started, and more importantly, we keep it going all night long,” Ms Dickens said.

“We’re the truest meaning of unexpected entertainment.”

Among the tracks expected to be played are The Mess Around, the hit made famous by the legendary Ray Charles.

Though Ms Dickens says, their take has its own unique twists.

“If you have not stood on a double bass whilst it’s on a table being played, then you haven’t lived yet,” Ms Dickens said.

Ms Dickens says the band’s high energy, stunt-based output is born out of a love for their fans.

“We are about the fans,

The Burdekin Auto Festival takes place across the April 24 and 25 weekend, with the action starting when the gates open at 8am.

Although still young, Piper has already considered whether she would like a career in fashion, following in her aunty’s footsteps, a

designer based in Aukland, New Zealand.

She’s passionate about upcycling clothing and creatively challenging herself to create new designs from pre-existing clothes.

Piper says that modelling her winning design at the Rags to Runway Event in front of an audience was a daunting but fun experience.

“It was nerve-wracking,” says Piper.

THIRTEEN-year-old Piper Grogan’s passion for sewing began when she was just a child, after her mother, Rebecca, taught her to use the family sewing machine.

She began by creating pint-sized outfits for her dolls before evolving to favour more complex designs, creating her

own patterns and clothing.

She’s recently been awarded as the Top Junior Designer in the Burdekin Artisan Community Association’s Rags to Runway competition and fundraiser last month, winning a brand new sewing machine.

“I decided to enter because it gave me something to do over the school holidays, it kept me busy. I started sewing

when I was younger,” says Piper.

The focus of the fashion design competition is budgetfriendly upcycling, turning used materials into new outfits.

For Piper’s award-winning garment, the young designer cut out her own pattern using old jeans and printed men’s shirts.

THE Burdekin’s Sweet Days Hot Nights festival is returning this May, drawing crowds for three nights of live entertainment and the iconic cultural events the festival has become known for.

Sweet Days Hot Nights is coming back hotter than ever, after COVID restrictions last year turned the festival on its head, live-streaming performances from the best of North Queensland’s musical talent.

Now, people from the Burdekin and surrounding areas can enjoy performances in the flesh, with several headline acts returning to the

The festival celebrates the beginning of the Burdekin sugar cane crushing season, featuring iconic events like the lighting of the first cane fire of the season and the hand cane cutting championships, an event that has run in the

region for decades.

Event organisers have been busy creating a jam-packed itinerary of family-friendly entertainment that entertain both locals and visitors to the region.

Headline acts include solo artists Matilda Duncan,

Taylor Fitzgibbon and Baxter Beddoes, as well as local cover band Boothill Express.

Boothill Express percussionist Nick Gray says the band is looking forward to performing at the festival’s cane cutting championships on Saturday the 29th of May.

“Both myself and band member Jayson grew up on our families’ cane farms in the Burdekin, so it’s a great feeling to be part of an event that has such significance to the region,” says Nick.

“I have attended the Australian Hand Cane Cutting Championships on numerous occasions, and I remember attending the event at a young age with my Dad back when it was in Dalbeg.” he says.

“We can’t wait to hit the stage at this year’s Sweet Days, Hot Nights Festival!

A momentous moment will be recognised and celebrated at the Home Hill Tennis Club at the end of the month, with the 40th annual Home Hill Sugar Bowl set to take place.

Organisers at the Tennis Club are already ramping up preparations for the wideranging tournament, which draws on players from across the north of the state to pit teams against each other in a competitive yet social environment.

National and international players have even been featured before, but this year’s competition marks the fortieth year since the event began, and the administration at Home Hill Tennis Club couldn’t be more thrilled to bring it back.

President Dallan Garvey said it was good to see the competition back in action for

such a meaningful moment.

“We’re really excited, especially after not being able to have the event last year, it’s going to be great to see everybody back playing tennis, we’re pretty much a big family,” Mr Garvey said. “A lot of people have been missing playing tennis for a pretty long time now.”

The event, which was the brainchild of Lex and Pat Anderson during Lex’s tenure as club president, was first held in 1981, on Home Hill Tennis’ Associations fiftieth anniversary.

Described as a ‘team sport to remember’, the competition targeted sportsmanship and ability, a tradition that’s been carried forward throughout the years.

As invitations to other regional areas like Sarina and Ingham were sent, the acclaim and prestige continued to build and the event became more and more famous,

drawing larger and larger pools of entrants.

In the first year, winners from Bowen, Proserpine, Mackay and Townsville took top billing, before a Home Hill effort claimed the first hometown win in 1983.

“Players travel from all around, mainly from Queensland, but it is something that’s really well spoken about, a lot of people who don’t even play tennis know someone who’s been involved or spoken about it,” Mr Garvey said.

“Every court in Home Hill and Ayr’s going to be getting played on while it’s going on.

It’s big.”

A plethora of Home Hill captained teams have led the way in claiming the premiership, all of whom have been honoured and commemorated on the anniversary shirts, according to Home Hill Tennis Club’s Kate Casswell.

The shirt which features images of both Lex and Pat Anderson, will be worn in honour of the special occasion.

A vintage tennis night and Centre Court dinner are also being held in the lead-up to the event, but the main event will take place across the opening long weekend in May at both the Home Hill and Ayr Tennis Associations.

Organisers are optimistic that the renown of the fortieth anniversary, will draw a bigger field than ever before, with around 46 teams expected to represent their chosen areas.

“We are expecting 44 teams this year, which will be the best attended Sugar Bowl ever,” Mrs Casswell said.

“The committee are very excited as this will bring a lot of business to the Burdekin over the weekend, we think there has been an increase in interest given the 40th year celebrations together with the positive profile of tennis in Australia with players such as our world number one Ash Barty.” The Sugar Bowl Centre Court dinner is on the 30th April with the tennis taking place from the 1st – 3rd May. Water Festival at risk of drying up

The Burdekin’s longest-running cultural event could be put on hiatus or lost for future generations if no one picks up the reins, with calls for new committee members to carry on the event.

THE Burdekin Water Festival, one of the longest-running festivals in Queensland, is at risk of being lost after 60 years of tradition in the region amid a volunteer deficit.

The Water Festival is iconic to Ayr, celebrating the abundance of water in the Burdekin and its significant contribution to the area’s thriving industry, lifestyle and economy, an event that evokes fond memories for families across the region.

Tamara Brush, former

president of the Water Festival committee and member of seven years, says that unless more people put their hand up to volunteer on the committee at the next annual meeting, held on the 21st of April, the iconic cultural event won’t go ahead.

“It would be really, really sad to see it go,” says Tamara, who decided to step down from her committee role to focus on her new child care centre.

“It’s the Burdekin’s longestrunning festival, and it’s known everywhere. It brings together the community, and

it’s a celebration that families really look forward to. People do travel from Townsville for it; it brings an influx of money to the region as well,” she says.

Among the festival highlights are the annual ball, street parades and ambassador programs, and a spectacular show featuring live acts and entertainment at the Ayr Showgrounds, community events, fundraisers and stalls that benefit local organisations and business.

Erlinda joined Connolly Suthers in January 2018 as a trainee solicitor after graduating from James Cook University with a Bachelor of Laws with Honours.

Chambers, with community members invited to step forward for managerial roles and learn more about what’s involved.

“I would love for other people to step forward; a lot of people have dedicated so much of themselves to keep it running over the years,” says Tamara.

She says that without the core roles of president, treasurer and secretary filled at the meeting, the festival will be cancelled, a huge loss for the community.

She says that although sometimes demanding,

taking part in the festival’s organisation is equally rewarding and the groundwork for organising the event is already established from previous years.

“If we can get a committee together, everything is already in place for it to go,” says Tamara.

“It’s definitely an experience; you get to meet a lot of local people and get to engage in a lot of events around the region. You just get to know what the Burdekin is about from other people’s perspective; you get to take all of it on board,” she says.

“The old saying is that a lot of hands make light work, and that’s definitely true for the Water Festival. The more people that get involved, the better for the committee in general,” she says.

PLANS to upgrade and expand the capacity of the existing Burdekin Falls Dam are making headway, with the release of an environmental impact statement and terms of reference.

The project, estimated to cost between $358 and $665 million aims to increase the wall height of the dam, already the largest in Queensland by up to two to six metres.

Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk says that the expansion will increase water security to the region and give Queensland’s agriculture industry a boost in line with the State Economic Recovery Plan.

“The Burdekin Falls dam is at the heart of one of Queensland’s largest agricultural hubs and the extra water for irrigation could support another 10,000 hectares of production,” said the Premier.

Minister for Water, Glenn Butcher says that the company behind the project, Sunwater Limited will be drafting an EIS that addresses the final terms of reference established for the expansion.

“Queenslanders will then have another opportunity to have their say with submissions to be invited on the draft EIS,” said Mr Butcher.

The development of the environmental impact statement (EIS) addresses things like the existing environment surrounding the project as well as potential environmental, economic and social impacts.

It also analyses potential benefits of the project and proposals established to mitigate these impacts.

During the initial submission period from 30 November 2020 through to 29 January 2021, the project received 69 responses, with some community members concerned about the impact on river flows, sediment transport, groundwater and aquatic fauna.

Amendments to the original terms of reference address concerns like the assessment of climate change impacts, dam failure risk and the project’s cost versus benefit assessment.

The project is predicted to create up to 150 full time jobs during construction, estimated to take up to four years.

THE Burdekin BMX Club is set to begin a raft of amenities upgrades after securing grant funding from the Queensland Country Bank in the latest round of funding handed out by the institution.

The club will receive $26,900 as a result of the approved grant, with the money going to some badly needed amenities upgrades that have had a big impact on the bikers abilities to host events.

The club will use the funding to upgrade the toilet blocks at their facility on Kennedy Street, which will allow them to take more attendees at future events.

The BMX Club’s treasurer Lisa Purssell welcomed the funding grant, saying where the money would be best spent was a decision only made after a lengthy consideration process.

“I jumped up and down with excitement when I heard we were successful

with the funding for the Queensland Country Good for Good Community Grant because completing this project wouldn’t be possible otherwise,” Ms Purssell said.

“We looked at various options in conjunction with Council and our plumber, and we determined that a new septic tank and pit was the best long-term option for the club.

“To have proper flushing toilets at the club without worrying that they will overflow is such great news for us.”

The consultation process was carried out in conjunction with Burdekin Shire Council, with the added promise that the upgrades could mean state-level competition visiting the Burdekin in the future.

“Without this funding, we would have had to continue getting the tanks pumped out when necessary, especially during events which required us to pump out prior, and then twice during the day,” Ms Purssell said.

Another result of a wholesome trend that’s gaining popularity across Queensland has been found in Anzac Park.

Mysterious painted rocks have been popping up sporadically through the region, and can be traced back to the Facebook group Queensland Rocks, which invites its 36,000 members, kids and families to hide painted creations for others to find.

Push for family safety plans to be covered under medicare GP’s are pushing for the Australian government to consider a new way of accessing family violence support.

Marina Trajkovich GENERAl Practitioners across Australia are urging for the establishment of family safety plans under medicare, providing an alternative avenue of help for women experiencing domestic violence.

The push comes amid statistics that have remained stagnant for years, as one woman a week on average is killed by a current or former partner in Australia, and police across the country respond to domestic violence call outs every three minutes.

CALL FOR CARERS TO ADVISE POLICY OUTCOMES Marina Trajkovich NOMINATIONS are open for the Queensland Carers Advisory Council, a body created to advise state government policy decisions affecting carers and their clients.

The nominations are for a 2-year term on the council, with the opportunity to provide advice to the Minister for Seniors and Disability Services and Minister for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Partnerships with

the goal of promoting support and recognition for cares.

Minister for Seniors, Disability Services and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Partnerships Craig Crawford said the Queensland Carers Advisory Council plays a vital role in advising the Palaszczuk Government in the best interests of carers.

“Carers play a crucial role right across our state by supporting people who require assistance. This includes those suffering from chronic or terminal illness, mental health issues, disability, problematic use of alcohol and other drugs and frailty associated with age,” Mr Crawford said.

“In 2018 the Australian Bureau of Statistics estimated one in nine members of Australia’s population are carers. That’s a significant

Ayr based social worker and domestic and family violence specialist, Mary Pearson says that the move to include domestic violence support under medicare would be a positive step in the right direction.

“I think it is a practical approach. When GP’s do mental health care plans, the counsellors or psychologists that they refer people to need to keep them updated,” says Mary.

She says that involving a family doctor who a victim trusts is already a recommended aspect of developing a safety plan and that further training to GP’s in identifying domestic violence would help support her work.

“Talking to their GP or asking for help from their GP should be a part of someone’s safety plan. Simply because it is not a suspicious place to go like an outreach centre is, and the GP has a Duty of Care to the client,” she says.

“Another benefit of having a GP involved is that medical records are very helpful forms of evidence for court cases, like family court or domestic violence court,” she says.

Mary says that including doctors in the debate surrounding domestic violence prevention could be a vital step forward in ensuring women’s safety.

“I wish more GPs were more domestic and family abuse informed,” she says.

“The ones that are have changed so many lives for the better - I’ve seen it. But if they say the wrong thing, it could be make or break for that woman asking for help, so the more informed they are, the better,” she says.

“I think that working together is essential in addressing portion of our community who also deserve support themselves,” he said.

The council consists of 12 members from a diverse range of backgrounds.

“Being a carer can have a profound impact on those who give such a huge amount of time to look after others and their needs must also be recognised. That begins by including them at the decision-making table, said Mr Crawford.

“Members of the Queensland Carers Advisory Council will be drawn from diverse backgrounds and will bring a wealth of knowledge and lived experience of their caring roles to help inform government policy and services.”

“Maybe knowing that she has an option for short term crisis support and an option for long term therapy will help her see the light at the end of the very dark tunnel,” says Mary.

President of the Australian Federation of Medical Women and GP, Dr Magdalena Simonis also supports the push for a family safety plan under medicare.

She says that 1 in 10 women visiting their GP will be experiencing family violence and that many of those women already have a good relationship with their doctor, making it easier to broach the topic.

“GPs are trusted; nine times out of 10 the first person a woman will tell is their GP, and this doesn’t take 15 minutes.

It is really complex, family stuff, they come to you with that trauma,” says Dr Simonis.

“You also become the port of call for the other health issues that arise due to family violence,” she says.

Gender Super Gap in Dawson Daniel Shirkie WOMEN in the Dawson electorate may struggle to retire on time, according to new analysis by Industry Super.

Figures cited by Industry Super Australia have chief executive Bernie Dean calling for action from Dawson and Herbert MPs George Christensen and Phillip Thompson.

According to the analysis, women in Dawson and Herbert’s median super income has dropped well behind the rest of the nation, with $142,800 the current amount attributed to the average woman in Ayr and its surrounds.

That number would put the median woman well below the $545,000 needed for a ‘comfortable’ retirement.

Those figures have Mr Dean urging Christensen and Thompson to support wide-ranging reforms to the program, aimed at alleviating the financial disparity between men and women.

“It is time we bridged the gender gap in super - if local MPs don’t act now local women’s savings will keep

falling further behind,” Mr Dean said.

Among the measures Mr Dean is hoping to see implemented are measures that would see super paid on every dollar earned, including Commonwealth paid parental leave.

Without these measures, Industry Super argues, the women of the Dawson electorate will continue to fall behind, with the current gap representing a 23% distance between what men of retirement age hold in terms of super and what women have access to.

“Government MPs George Christensen and Phillip Thompson have a simple choice: they can fight to deliver the promised super boost and get super paid on every dollar earnt or explain to female voters why they think it’s ok for many local women to retire into poverty,” Mr Dean said.

“Sticking with super increases and closing the gap is crucial for a woman’s future economic security.”

In his response, Member for Dawson George Christensen said he viewed the statements made by Mr

Dean as ‘highly unethical’.

“It is highly unethical for industry super funds to get political, when their income is only made possible because of government legislation,” Mr Christensen said.

“I am not buying into the argument as to whether or not business should be forced to pay more super to their workers.”

Mr Christensen also said that an increase to the rate of super would not solve the issue of the disparity, saying that it existed for underlying conditions.

“I would also note that increasing the superannuation rate is not going to fix this gender inequality issue,” Mr Christensen said.

“If the rate went from 9 to 12 per cent there would still be a disparity.”

“That disparity exists because women want to take time out of the workforce for childbearing and childrearing.”

“I am not buying into the argument as to whether or not business should be forced to pay more super to their workers.”

Bowen named in top tourism locations competition

The town is in the running to win a sizable tourism prize Daniel Shirkie BOWEN may soon be crowned the top tourism town in Queensland, courtesy of a new promotion being run by the Queensland Tourism Industry Council.

The top towns from across the state, 37 in total, have been divided into two categories by size and will be in the running to win various prizes to benefit their local tourism industry.

QTIC Chief Executive, Daniel Gschwind, says the current focus on the domestic tourism sector is the perfect time to single out deserving winners.

“With the current focus on domestic tourism, now is the time to draw attention to our regional destinations and to put the spotlight on our tourism operators and communities who keep

our regions thriving,” Mr Gschwind said.

“We are thrilled with the response from towns from across Queensland who have entered the Awards with 37 fantastic nominations.”

The winners of the awards will be selected via public voting, with the polls going live on April 11 and continuing through to April 26.

Individuals who have their say will also go into the running to win a $2,000 travel package.

“It is now up to the public to tell us who they think should be crowned the Top Tourism Town of Queensland which is a challenging task with so many worthy contenders,” Mr Gschwind said.

Bowen is in the running in the large top tourism towns category, going up against

other areas like Townsville, Rockhampton and Ipswich.

That category, including all towns in the running that have a population over 5,000 will receive a $25,000 Strategic Consulting and Capacity Building Package provided by EarthCheck.

Whitsundays Regional Mayor Andrew Willcox said the nomination didn’t come as a surprise, calling it perfectly placed as a holiday destination.

Far from home How a heartbroken mother is healing and pushing for change Five years after the death of her only daughter Mia in Home Hill, Rosie Ayliffe has taken on the role of advocate, detailing her experience with grief and pushing for better treatment of backpackers in her new book, Far From Home.

WHEN Rosie Ayliffe answered her door in Derbyshire, England, on the evening of the 23rd of August 2016 to see two solemn policemen, her heart sank.

The news was any parent’s worst nightmare, that her only child and 20-year-old daughter Mia Ayliffe-Chung had been killed in Australia.

“They weren’t allowed to tell me anything other than that she had been fatally wounded,” says Rosie of the shattering news.

“I had to then phone the foreign office to find out what happened,” she says.

Rosie later found that her daughter had been fatally stabbed by a fellow resident, French national Smail Ayad, at the Home Hill Backpackers, where Mia had been staying in Australia to do her 88 days of farm work.

A friend of Mia’s, another British traveller staying at the Home Hill residence, was also killed coming to her aid and another, the manager of the hostel, had been stabbed in the leg trying to help her.

The travellers had been working to extend their 417 working holiday visa’s and 29-yearold Ayad, now held in a psychiatric prison, had reportedly developed an infatuation with Mia in the lead up to the brutal attack.

Rosie Ayliffe says that when she first heard the news her daughter had been murdered, she was in complete shock and then later denial, focusing her immediate attention on organising the funeral.

“I didn’t cry, I just got into organisational mode. And I didn’t feel anything, I just felt numb. I didn’t really believe it,” says Rosie.

“To me, she was still out in Australia. I was still checking my messages.

“The first time it really hit me was when I was on the plane to Australia to have her cremated. I just cried for most of the journey, and it was a long journey,” she says.

“After that, I spent a lot of time just grieving; I didn’t really do anything, just remembering her.”

In the aftermath of Mia’s murder, Rosie, a teacher and established writer began a weekly column for the Independent in the UK, allowing readers to follow her story.

Populins Hall’s heartfelt legacy still echoes through Ayr George Populin says the memory of his mother will never leave the beloved hall Daniel Shirkie WHEREVER George Populin goes, the family name always gets the same reaction.

“I can be anywhere and people will say, ‘oh, Populin, that wouldn’t happen to be related to Populins Hall, would it?’,” Mr Populin says.

While his bread and butter is now his building business, GPB Construction, George Populin is still pleased to hear about the community’s love for the hall that bears his family’s name.

The hall was constructed by the Populin family many, many decades ago, but the story of why it came about is one George still cherishes .

“Populins Hall is something that you can’t split from the Populin’s involvement in the construction industry at that time,” Mr Populin said.

“It’s all very connected.’

In those days, the midpoint of the 20th century, an influx of immigrant workers to Ayr meant a big boon for the construction industry and the formation of an idea in the mind of George’s mother, Maria.

“There was a connection, the community really made that connection through my mother, there were always

workers coming there in order to speak to her,” Mr Populin said.

“She was always the point of contact, because she could speak English well and she could speak on their behalf.”

While George was incredibly young, he still remembers the early hustle and bustle that brought many of the community’s migrant workers through the Populin’s home.

“There were always people there, either for work or just to be part of the community, because they wanted to relay messages or something like that,” Mr Populin said.

“My mother was the go between, she was always called upon and she was very well respected, because of all that, she came up with the original idea for the hall.”

That idea, of a connected hub that could form a focal point for the town and its people, inspired the whole venture.

“She believed that the town needed something like a heartbeat. She wanted that heartbeat through the town, because of her communication with people and she was the one who convinced my father to build it,” Mr Populin said.

“At first it was just the shops and things that were going to happen and she said, ‘no, let’s make this part of an identity and we’ll build it’.”

While the construction took ‘a lot of work’ before it was even near completion, the grand opening was something of a bittersweet moment for the Populin family.

“The hall all started with the idea of bringing people

Mr Populin says he believes the hall, in it’s decades long history, has become a reflection of his mother’s philosophy of an interconnected community.

“Really, that hall is a reflection of her and that is what it is. That hall is her,” Mr Populin said.

While Mr Populin and people from his generation all have fond memories of the hall, the building has been a

“In ‘64 when it opened, it all started there were generations and decades of people holding dances there, weddings, water festivals, you name it.”

“It was always a very important part of the town during that time and it still is even now.”

“Each generation experienced their time there,” Mr Populin said.

“It eventually did close for a time in the 80s, the committee that was running it moved on, they were a great bunch of locals who did a very good job, it was well run by them.”

While the hall sat empty and abandoned for some time, Mr Populin couldn’t

bear to see it languish, and began drafting plans for a revamp and revival of the meeting spot.

“I just couldn’t let it sit there and deteriorate,” Mr Populin said.

“I brought it back for my mother, for her memory, the hall deserved as much and so did she.”

Renovations on the structure began in 1993, with Mr Populin and others upgrading many of the existing structures in an attempt to modernise the surroundings.

Air conditioning was installed, and by the close of the decade, the hall had also had extensive upgrades to the kitchen and other areas.

“It was a big cost, but it’s a very modern complex that’s been added on, it was a lot of design work getting it all together,” Mr Populin said.

Eventually, the administrative duties of the reopened Populins Hall were handed over to Jenny and Richard Papale, with that family carrying forward the legacy in fitting fashion.

“They’ve done a fantastic job up there, I really owe them a lot, I’m very grateful for everything they’ve done there,” Mr Populin said.

“They’ve been able to continue making events a very special occasion and that’s what it’s always been about - adding that special touch to special days for people.”

Mr Populin still has strong memories of the discussions amongst his family that led to the hall’s creation, and while it was also a very sad time due to his mother’s untimely passing, he’s pleased that there’s such a strong legacy remaining of her.

“She was a very important person,” Mr Populin said.

“She’s where it all came from and people from all over say they’ve been to a function there and that it’s a great spot, it’s amazing.”

Celebrating 75 William and Gwladys Buckley are celebrating their 75th wedding anniversary and the incredible life they’ve shared.

Marina Trajkovich WHEN 16-year-old William ‘Bill’ Buckley first saw eighteen-year-old newcomer Gwladys at a church social in Box Hill in 1941, he was entranced, telling his brother that night he’d found his future wife.

Now, 79 years later, Bill and Gwladys’ relationship is still strong as ever, as they celebrate their 75th wedding anniversary this week.

“We would see each other at church functions, he was in the band, and I was in the congregation. I could see this guy making eyes at me,” says Gwladys, now 97.

“He came to my home to invite me to the pictures, and that’s where he saw my father, who said ‘don’t spend too much money on her, she has a very quick turnover of boyfriends!”

“79 years later, here we are,” says Gwladys.

Reserved and practical, Bill had sought out the vivacious Gwladys, and the pair had bonded at church every week after that.

“I had a lot of boyfriends, but there was just something missing. After two dates, I knew he was the right one.

He ticked all the boxes,” says Gwladys.

“He was very respectful, and the way he spoke, he’s very particular. That came through in the way he spoke to me; it wasn’t casual; it was sincere because he knew he was going to marry me,” she says.

Gwladys remembers their first date and her embarrassment as she felt a nose bleed coming on as Bill walked her home.

“I had severe epistaxis, severe bleeding of the nose.

We were coming home from the pictures, and we were coming back very close to my place. I was thinking, ‘I

wonder what this guy is going to do when we get to the gate,’ and all of a sudden, I could feel blood down my face.

“I gave him a push and said go home; I’ll see you tomorrow! He was probably wondering what the wrong move was he’d made!” says Gwladys.

She explains that after their relationship started, Bill was called to the navy during WW2 while Gwladys trained to be a nurse.

He proposed to her on one of his trips home before returning to Japan.

“He had a week’s leave, and we got engaged before he went to fight the Kamikazes in Japan. I was still nursing,” says Gwladys.

“When the war finished, he came home. He was demobilised on the 10th of April, and we were married on the 13th.

“We had a lovely wedding, quite a big wedding and very

colourful,” says Gwladys.

When the couple’s son was born, the first of two children, the pair wanted a change of pace, moving to a Queensland dairy farm before Bill got a job managing an Angus stud farm.

In 1959, the pair pursued theological studies, becoming Salvation Army Officers and working in the position for fifteen years before Bill was called to serve in the Vietnam War. “Then Bill went to be a prison officer in Gunn Point Prison Farm in the Northern Territory for ten years. I was living in a house that we’d built in Humpty Doo, and he would fly in and fly out,”

Gwladys explains.

“When he retired from the prison, we moved to Charters Towers and became interested in the Anglican Church. Bill trained to be a priest and was father William, and I was Reverend Gwladys,” she says.

The couple retired to Ayr seventeen years ago, where they became involved in St Helens Anglican Church in Home Hill.

After 79 years, Gwladys says their relationship is as strong as ever. The secret to a long and happy marriage? Being affectionate towards one another and never going to sleep on an argument.

“I’m eighteen months

older, so he’s my toy boy!” says Gwladys.

“We were always together; everywhere we went, it was always Bill and Glad.”

“We always took it for granted that we’d always be together. The only times we’ve been separated is now and during the Wars,” she says.

Although the couple has been separated by strict Covid restrictions resulting from the recent Brisbane outbreak, Bill residing at a nursing home in Home Hill, Gwladys says she can’t wait to see him again to celebrate the big anniversary.

“You can rely on him for anything. He’s an incredible person,” says Gwladys.

Where are they now?

Isabel Georgian and Belinda Suitor (the Stubbs sisters) Marina Trajkovich Growing up on a farm in the Burdekin, the Stubbs sisters never expected to develop an intense love of basketball, nor such an incredible talent for the sport.

Both selected from their respective high school teams to move to the United States on college basketball scholarships, before following their own paths in teaching and physiotherapy and starting their own families.

Burdekin Local News speaks to Isabel Georgian about making it into the Montana State University Hall of Fame and Belinda Suitor about coaching basketball in Brisbane.

Tell me a bit about growing up in the Burdekin and how you first became involved in Basketball? How old were you when you started playing the sport?

Isabel: The Burdekin Wildcats ran a program where their American import players would do sessions at the primary schools. This really piqued my interest in the game, and in 5th grade, we put together a team of kids from Clare for a season. But I didn’t really start playing until I was 15. I was lucky enough to be placed in the Queensland Academy of Sport squad which helped me develop skills and understanding of the game.

Belinda: I had started out playing netball in primary school. My older sister started playing basketball when she started high school.

When we would go along to watch her I was asked to play and eventually, I started as well. I think I was thirteen or fourteen.

How did it feel to get a basketball scholarship to the United States, where the sport is so huge over there?

Isabel: Before I started playing, I had always wanted to go to the USA, so when the opportunity to play in college and live there came up, it was a perfect situation. I didn’t really understand the level of intensity and physical expectations, and that was a little shock at the beginning!

I learned so much about hard work and how limits can always be pushed. I was part of back-to-back championship teams and was recently inducted into the Montana State University Hall of Fame.

What does life look like for you now?

I went on to play professionally in Greece and then joined the WNBA’s Connecticut Sun as a permanent practice player. Even though I didn’t get to play, being beaten up daily by Olympians was one of my most treasured experiences!

Isabel: Right now, I have not taught in a regular class setting for over a year. I live in Conneticut, which is right between Boston and New York, and have been in the epicentre of the Covid breakout in America. We closed down our school for months at the beginning of the pandemic.

Belinda: It was exciting and scary at the same time. I had never been overseas before visiting my sister in Montana the year before I went to college so it was a little bit terrifying!

My sons, Riely, who’s eleven and Reese, nine, have just had their first full week at school since March 2019. As a family, we have been able to maintain other hobbies throughout the pandemic. We race sailboats and mountain bikes together and could still enjoy snow skiing in the winter months.

After you finished your teaching studies, did basketball stay a big part of your life? Where did life take you from there?

Isabel: Because the USA is heavily based in a school system of competition, there weren’t any opportunities to continue playing so I began racing downhill mountain bikes and spent a few years racing as a pro.

Belinda: When I returned to Australia, I played a few seasons of state league basketball with Brisbane and the Gold Coast. I have until this year continued to play in a local basketball league. Now I’m coaching my daughter’s basketball team and enjoy watching my son play as well.

Belinda: I am working at a Physiotherapy clinic part-time and running my kids around to after school and weekend activities.

How do you think growing up in the Burdekin has shaped you as a person?

Isabel, how did you decide to pursue teaching and Belinda, physiotherapy?

Isabel: Growing up on the farm definitely taught me that some things are just out of your control. It is what you choose to do with the situation that makes you the type of person you want to be. Without the Burdekin Wildcats, I wouldn’t have had all the experiences that led me to where I am today!

Isabel: Teaching was what I decided I would be in Grade Two. Guiding students to develop understanding and crafting lessons, so kids have ownership of their learning is a very rewarding career!

Belinda: I injured my knee when I was 16 and had surgery so had to do a lot of rehabilitation with a physiotherapist and thought it seemed like a fun job. Later at college studying Anatomy and Physiology, I found the human body fascinating so that confirmed for me that was the path I wanted to head down.

Burdekin Small Schools students enjoy a fun race day

Thursday 1 April saw small school students from across the district gather at Gumlu State School to participate in the Burdekin Small Schools’ Cross Country.

Hayley Laidlow Principal Osborne State School STUDENTS from Gumlu, Osborne, Maidavale, Millaroo, Airville, Brandon, Jarvisfield, Kalamia, Clare and Giru State Schools came together to compete in a variety of race distances

ranging from 3km to 1km distances.

The races were highly competitive with students pushing themselves hard around the track as they strove to earn a place at the upcoming Burdekin District Cross Country.

The top 5 students in each age category from 9-12 years will now go on to compete

at this event. Between races, the children were kept entertained with a water slide, jumping castle and a visit from the Gumlu State School mascot Gumroo!

The schools would like to say a sincere thank you to Mr Thomas Harrington and his team for organising such a fantastic day.

WOMEN LEADING THE CHARGE AT TAFE More and more women are enrolling and graduating from TAFE Queensland, excelling in traditionally male-dominated fields.

Marina Trajkovich FEMALE students are leading the charge at TAFE Queensland, as women continue to be disproportionately affected by pandemic job losses.

Data from the Australian Bureau of Statistics suggests that young women were hardest hit by the pandemic, representing the largest proportion of job cuts.

But in spite of grim employment statistics over the last year, there’s been an increase of female students at TAFE, and greater efforts to support them in their vocational learnings.

“During COVID-19 we know that more women lost their jobs,” said Minister for Employment and Small Business and Minister for Training and Skills Development Di Farmer.

“We needed to address that head-on,” she said.

Greater efforts were employed by TAFE Queensland to support women in pursuing their chosen careers and to break barriers that prevent women from pursuing and excelling in traditionally male-dominated industries.

“Women enrolling in construction is the standout figure, with an increase of more than 200 students when compared to the same period last financial year.

“There have also been big increases in women enrolling in automotive, engineering, hospitality and retail,” said Ms Farmer.

Women gaining qualifications in primary industries like mining and farming saw an increase as well as an increase in women graduating with qualifications to undertake laboratory operations and jobs in the health sector.

Minister Farmer said the Palaszczuk Government’s Free TAFE and Free Apprenticeships programs have had a significant impact, supporting training costs for women to take up in-demand apprenticeships, traineeships and other vocational training qualifications.

“More than 30,500 young Queenslanders now have accessed our free training, including over 27,000 apprentices and trainees,” Ms Farmer said.

“This allows young people to focus on their studies and work without the worry of training debt,” Ms Farmer said.

“Employers, colleagues, industries, schools and parents need to continue playing their roles supporting more women to commence and complete their studies and to build careers in their trades of choice,” she said.

Fiona Lamari co-Vice President of the National Association of Women in Construction (NAWIC) said an increase in the number of women training within male dominated fields will mean more women filling these jobs, reducing the gender gap for healthier industries.

“Many employers and industries that were struggling to find skilled workers are looking to recruit, train and retain more women in their workforces,” Ms Lamari said.

Offroaders hit the trails during four day adventure Pam L’Huillier THE Easter break provided the members of the Burdekin District 4WD Club Inc, the opportunity to travel afar and partake in a wonderful four days of four wheel driving and sight-seeing, in a remote location abounding Lolworth Creek north west of Charters Towers.

A convoy of six vehicles departed Sandy Corner, travelling to Charters Towers and then diverging off the Lynd Highway along station roads to our secret location.

Lunching alongside Lolworth Creek was a pleasant experience before proceeding to our campsite

and making camp.

Diversity of vehicles within the convoy ranged from a 1989 Toyota Scout to the latest Mazda Twin cab and an Isuzu, Nissan and other Toyotas.

Saturday saw the group traverse Lolworth Creek via a natural rock wall and manoeuvre our way across some undulating country that threw up many four wheel drive challenges for a distance of approximately 50km.

Low range four wheel driving was the order of the day.

This entailed flowing water crossings, deep wash outs and sometimes unidentifiable

tracks through the beautiful grasses that have come to life, since the recent rains.

We were in search of some illusive sandstone caves, but unfortunately we had taken a wrong turn somewhere and were unable to achieve our goal of exploring the caves before the sun went down.

Unlike most coastal regions, the weather was kind to us, with a thunderstorm circling the campsite on Saturday night but only imparting minimal amounts of rain.

Only enough to dampen our campfire, which was quickly rekindled after it passed.

geared up for another day of adventure in travelling another 50 klm through some iron bark, high country which presented steep slopes and later in the afternoon a creek crossing which saw one member bogged and got to try out his Max Tracks with success.

The result of these efforts saw us visit a beautiful waterfall and picnic area that is exclusive to a private property.

Marina Trajkovich ADVENTUROUS outdoorsytype Burdekenites are welcomed to join the Townsville Bushwalking Club, a group of dedicated hikers that’s been going strong since 1960.

The club meets weekly to tackle a brand new hike, often off-track to explore the wonders of the surrounding natural area undiscovered by most people in the Townsville region.

The walks are challenging, and sometimes take multiple days but president of the group, Keith Dyson says they’re equally rewarding.

“We get to see some fantastic sites, great waterfalls,” says Keith, who’s been with the group for thirteen years.

“There’s not too much in the Townsville region with recreational bushwalking track wise because a lot of National Parks don’t actually have too many tracks.

“Bowling Green Bay National Park, in particular, is beautiful but there are no tracks out there, some of the really good waterfalls are bound by private property,” he says.

Keith says that the group has developed relationships with property owners to snag access to some of the best and most remote hikes in the

On the Land is proudly supported by Australia now second biggest raw sugar exporter NEW IRRIGATION PROJECT TO LAUNCH IN THE BURDEKIN CANEGROWERS QUEENSLAND’S sugarcane growers are counting down to the start of 2021 harvest, buoyed by the news that Australia has jumped to second place in the list of raw sugar exporting nations, even with weather reducing the expected crop.

“Recently, Australia has overtaken Thailand as the world’s second largest exporter of raw sugar,” CANEGROWERS Chairman Paul Schembri said.

“I think many people in our communities and government, and even cane growers, would be surprised to know we are such an important player in this market, sitting second only to Brazil.”

When sugar mills fire up in Australia in June, CANEGROWERS is anticipating growers will harvest around 29.5 million tonnes of sugarcane, 28 million tonnes of that in Queensland. That crop will make around 4 million tonnes of raw sugar of which 85% will be exported, earning $1.7 billion.

Experiencing drought in some

key growing regions, Thai sugar exports are expected to only be around 2.6 million tonnes in 2021 – four million tonnes less than 2019.

“We have definitely had our own challenges going into the 2021 season,” Mr Schembri said. “While there has been periodic heavy rain, La Nina didn’t deliver the soaking wet season across the regions that we were looking for and the cane crop for 2021 is around 1.5 million tonnes less than the 2020 season.

“Rain gauges tell us that the Burdekin, central, and southern regions, which normally contribute around 60% of Queensland’s total cane tonnage, have had below average rainfall so far this year.

“Bundaberg, Childers and Maryborough remain effectively in drought with irrigation water storages now critically low.”

While Australia is the world’s second largest exporter of raw sugar, it is not in the running for the top spot as Brazil exported a huge 27.5 million tonnes of raw sugar last season.

Sugar Research Australia A NEW irrigation project in the Burdekin hopes to provide sugarcane growers an opportunity to enhance their productivity and improve irrigation management in the region.

The new collaborative project is being delivered by Sugar Research Australia (SRA), Burdekin Productivity Services (BPS), Farmacist, AgriTech Solutions (ATS), the Queensland Government’s Department of Agriculture and Fisheries (DAF), Burdekin Bowen Integrated Floodplain Management Advisory Committee (BBIFMAC) and James Cook University.

Project Officer Gavan Lamb said that the Burdekin Irrigation Project would support growers to transition to proven, scalable, sustainable and technologically advanced irrigation practices.

“Collaboration is key to this new, large project. By having all the major extension providers in the Burdekin involved, along with support from James Cook University, we can work together to achieve significant

outcomes for Burdekin cane growers,” Mr Lamb said.

“The Burdekin region is renowned as being a heartland of irrigation in Australia and having one of the most secure water supplies in the country.

The region’s farmers continue to innovate and improve practices, but we also know that there is a huge opportunity to deliver even better outcomes for the region,” said Mr Lamb.

“Local growers face pressure from increasing irrigation costs, and this project will support increased profitability and improved water quality through enhanced irrigation management.

“No matter what level of knowledge about irrigation efficiency a grower

has, involvement in this project will build that knowledge, so each grower can improve practices on their farm.”

Via direct investment funding by the Australian Government’s Reef Trust and the Great Barrier Reef Foundation, combined with in-kind contribution from project partners, the project is valued at over $6.9 million for the region over the next four years.

The project will run until June 2024 and includes a strong focus on implementing innovative technologies to align the region’s sugarcane farms with the latest irrigation practices.

THE Toft family have taken to social media to announce the recent passing of patriarch Neville Toft.

A memorial service will be held in Clare for Toft by his family and friends, to honour his life and share in the immense impact he and his father and uncle had on the sugar cane industry.

Neville Toft, who was the son of sugar cane harvester inventor Harold Toft, was aged 73, and had been living in the United States in recent years.

The Toft family were instrumental in shaping the sugar cane industry as it currently exists today, after

creating the first large-scale cane harvester in the 1940s.

Harold and his brother Joe worked together to refine the family’s machines, making Bundaberg the hub of cane harvesting equipment for the entire world.

While the business was eventually sold off and passed around to a number of different international entities, the brand eventually returned to Australian shores as ‘Austoft’ before, finally, moving from the ancestral home of the Toft’s in Bundaberg to Brazil.

The memorial service, which will honour Neville’s life and commemorate some of his achievements in the sugar cane industry, will be

NQ Dry Tropics BOWEN and Collinsville graziers are encouraged to get involved with a multimillion dollar natural resource management project to enhance land condition and productivity that will help improve water quality outcomes for local waterways, and the Great Barrier Reef lagoon.

The Landholders Driving Change (LDC) project, delivered by NQ Dry Tropics, aims to support graziers within the priority Bowen, Broken, Bogie (BBB) catchments to improve productivity, particularly in relation to pasture cover, and to repair erosion and gullies which may be impacting on water quality.

Running since 2017, the LDC project has been extended for a further three years to September 2023 thanks to a $5 million funding injection by the partnership between the Australian Government’s Reef Trust and the Great Barrier Reef Foundation. It was previously funded by the Queensland Government through the Queensland Reef Water Quality Program, this funding continues until June.

AUSTRALIA’S favourite music quiz show, Spicks and Specks, is back on the ABC and ABC iview from Sunday April 18, and for the first time since 2014 it will be a full series, with ten episodes airing on Sunday nights at 7.40pm.

Overview: Burdekin Cane Audit Services (BCAS) are currently looking for new personnel to come and join their auditing team. BCAS auditors operate out of the 4 Burdekin sugar mills – Invicta, Pioneer, Kalamia and Inkerman – and their primary objective is to oversee and audit the Cane Analysis Program (CAP) which forms an integral part of cane payment for the Burdekin cane farming community.

The Role: As part of the sugar production process there are many different types of samples and analysis techniques required to ensure accurate cane payment. In particular, the cane auditing function specialises in cane weighing, sugar juice collection/analysis and cane fibre collection/analysis.

The cane auditing team consists of day auditors, night auditors, advanced auditors and a workplace coordinator. Positions generally involve collection of samples with accurate and timely analysis. All of these positions are laboratory based and involve a shift work roster. We ask that all applicants be committed to completing an entire crushing season which generally runs from June through to December subject to weather conditions and other factors.

Science qualifications or other skills/ tickets may be viewed favourably, please ensure these form part of your application.

Qualifications: • Preferably competency at least a level equivalent to a Certificate III in Laboratory Skills, but not essential.

Shane Muspratt Cup entrants brave the heat during two-day blitz

Daniel Shirkie ORGANISERS of this year’s returning Tropic Shane Muspratt Cup have walked away thrilled after another successful iteration of the annual fixture.

Now in it’s seventh year, the weekend long carnival wasn’t held last year due to COVID-19 restrictions, but the anticipation and passion proved the perfect recipe for a boilover in the April heat.

Teams from across the state descended on Rugby Park en-masse to get some on-field time in, with over 500 under 12s players giving their all during the two-days of packed entertainment.

Co-ordinator Sara Smith says that the carnival was another success for the club this year.

“We’re really thrilled with how the weekend went, everyone seemed happy with how it was run and were really impressed with our grounds and how well they’re kept, it was a great weekend,” Ms Smith said.

While there were plenty of highlights on and off field as the under-12 sides tested themselves against each other in the sweltering heat and humidity, everyone involved gave a good account of themselves.

“All the kids played really well given the conditions, it was such a hot weekend, everyone dug in and did

really well, there was some really good footy played across the weekend from all the teams,” Ms Smith said.

The players, representing 25 different teams, tackled a packed slate of 75 games, with NRL great Shane Muspratt in attendance to talk with each team and offer advice and encouragement throughout the weekend.

While some numbers were impacted during the two-day event, the youngsters showed

their class and embodied the spirit of the carnival by donning the jerseys of other teams and at times playing against their own side in order to ensure that games could go ahead and that numbers weren’t lacking.

While the matches between the teams provided plenty of highlights, there were also other events held, like a $500 raffle and multiple relays – the ‘Fastest Four’ and ‘Dash for Cash’, which earned the

Proserpine Brahmans and Souths Townsville tidy prizes for spirited running efforts.

While no scores or points were tabulated in keeping with the Cup’s focus on junior development, a merit team was selected with the help of Burdekin Roosters first grade coach Chris Perry, with a number of young stars who impressed earning selection in the squad.

A player of the carnival was also chosen, with the

Proserpine Brahmans’ young gun Koby Johnson-Follett impressing with his silky skills and foot speed in order to take home the title.

He also featured in the side’s blitzing four-pack that won the ‘Fastest Four’ competition later in the day.

While the carnival has only just been run, the committee are already looking ahead to next year’s event with plenty of anticipation.

Some early ideas already

being floated will be sure to see the carnival back in 2022 ‘bigger and better than ever’, according to the organisers.

Ayr Ladies Bowls Club Home Hill It was a proud day for Ayr Ladies Community Sports Bowls Club when four members Club of the club won The Masters Invitation Fours at Suburbans Bowls Club. The event was held over two days and our ladies were undefeated and won the day. Well done!

TWO SILVERLINK STARS SIGNED TO NORTHERN MENDI RAYS Daniel Shirkie TWO of the Burdekin Silverlinks stars will step up in competition this year, with Mackenzie Linton and Kimberley Bourke both signing with the Northern Mendi Rays for the side’s upcoming 2021 season.

Linton and Bourke, who normally play as part of the Silverlinks line-up, will make the change to the semi-pro Sapphire Hart series after getting the call up.

Bourke, who plays at centre and on the wing, was thrilled to take up the challenge.

“It’s very exciting, of course, exciting and we’re both very thrilled to be given the chance to represent our area, but it is a little nerve wracking too,” Bourke said.

Linton, a goal attack and shooter, said the opportunity was ‘exciting’, and would mean a lot to young players in the more remote regions.

“Now we’re able to show that you can be from a small town like the Burdekin and you can play for those teams at higher levels like the Northern Rays,” Linton said.

The Rays, based out of Townsville, will have their first game on April 17th at the Townsville RSL stadium to square off with the South Brisbane Wildcats.

“The first game’s a home game, which is great, it’ll take place at 6pm that Saturday night,” Linton said.

Both women trialled last year, and the training before the final squad was selected on Monday was intense.

“We’ve had a bit of time to prepare ourselves individually, we’re training in Townsville every Thursday night and we all head to Tully on the weekends for at least four hours training with Vicki Wilson,” Linton said.

Wilson, an all-time Netball great who led Australia to both a Commonwealth gold medal and a World Cup win, is the coaching director for the Rays at present, something that Bourke took full advantage of.

“I feel like I’ve learned a lot, even just over this little period of training, we’ve already started to implement those things into our game that she’s shown us, but it’s

not just us developing as players, we also bring that back to our club level stuff,” Bourke said.

“It’s been amazing to get some coaching from her.”

But aside from the hard yards in training, the journey to Rays representation hasn’t been easy for either player, with Linton sidelined for surgery through last year’s troubled season and Bourke dealing with the strain that COVID put on sporting competition.

“It felt great to get back into things, I’m actually coming back from back surgery last year, so I’m very grateful

that I’ve been given the opportunity,” Linton said.

Despite the challenges, Linton and Bourke both agree that it’s good to be playing alongside each other still.

“It’s great that Kimberley and I are both in, we’ve been supporting each other the whole way through everything, since the beginning of it all, really,” Linton said.

Both women were quick to thank their family and friends, as well as Burdekin Netball, in particular president Cara Trindall for their support.

Annual Burdekin Cup Carnival returns this weekend Daniel Shirkie THE Burdekin Cup Carnival will make it’s much awaited return this year, with teams travelling from across the region to test themselves in the yearly Netball competition.

The Burdekin Netball Associations’ Sheree McKaig said that the nine local teams that represent the Burdekin Netball Association that will feature in the contest were ‘eager’ to put to bed 12 months of no carnivals and take on challengers from the other 35 visiting teams.

Although the arrangements weren’t without some hardships, with the locals’ latest uniforms arriving just in the nick of time and a Queensland Firebirds coaching clinic clashing with the carnival.

“Our new netball dresses have arrived just in time thankfully,” Mrs McKaig said.

“Some of our littlest

netballers who are just nine or ten years old will be playing in their very first carnival, while some of our older girls will be playing in their last carnival, so it’s special for everyone.”

Many of the girls who will age out of the 18 and unders competitions this year missed out on the chance to play a penultimate carnival last year due to COVID-19, increasing the anticipation for everyone involved.

After such an uneventful year, Mrs McKaig and the other carnival co-ordinators

were thrilled to have the junior carnival back in it’s most sizable form; that of a two-day, weekend carnival.

Our local community will be able to witness some top class netball and we urge everyone to come along and enjoy the 2 days,” Mrs McKaig said.

“Games will commence at 2.30pm on Saturday and go until early evening and then they will commence again on Sunday morning at 8.00am.

“There will be lots of food and drink and plenty of great, talented netball to watch.”

Visiting teams will come from areas such as Mackay, Bowen, Airlie Beach, Charters Towers and Townsville to participate in the tournament.

The event also takes on an even more significant meaning this year, with last year’s 50 year anniversary celebration unfortunately cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Instead, the association will look to celebrate their 51st year in operation later on this year after the completion of the carnival.

Footy Tips An exciting round again with some brutal defence, brilliant and skilful attacking plays and surprise surprise, the Sea Eagles and Cowboys breaking their duck eggs and getting their first win of the year.

Broncos V Panthers Into round 6, and the Panthers are now the only side undefeated on the back of an excellent strategic game of power and skills with Nathan Cleary in superb form. While the Broncos continue to cause Kevin Walters lots of lost sleep, he just can’t seem to get the team balance right with only 1 win from 5. It is impossible to see the Broncos getting close to the Panthers. This is sure to be an easy win with the Panthers to continue winning in 2021.

Moon Man Knights V Sharks With Knights suffering massive injuries following a harsh beating by the Titans, it will be a nightmare again for Coach O’Brien with the Knights at home. Coach Morris has the Sharks performing excellent this year though suffering from a few close losses. The question is how will the Sharks players react on the field to the sacking of coach John Morris? This will be a tough game early, but I think the Shark’s better finishing skill will lead them to their third win against a depleted Knights team. Sharks to win a close game even with the Knights playing at home.

It was not a good start for three of the four Roosters teams in the T D R L last Saturday at Brothers in the first season’s games.

The Herbert River Crushers won the A Grade, Reserves and Ladies with the Roosters successful in the Under 19.

Roosters A Grade coach Chris Perry said despite being at the end of a 46 – 8 defeat by the Crushers; he saw some positives with his team. Perry said he went in with a young inexperienced side against a squad with several old hands. “We had five forwards missing, and it told with the Crushers pack getting on top and thus allowing their smart halves in Solari and Captain Coach Mitchell Seri to dictate play,” the coach said. He added that Solari and Seri were probably the best halves in the competition. The scene changed in the second half with the River allowed only three tries, the third a bounced ball that shouldn’t have been. In this period, Lona Kaifoto started to hit with purpose, and he had several

River forwards going backward.

The other forwards backed him up, and a change came over the game. Lona won the Player’s Player for his no-nonsense play, and Fijian International Kali Nauque backed him up. Known for his big hits in defence, this was no exception, with many River players looking for the bus that hit them. Perry used young Under 19 half Rhett Williams second session, and he showed he has a big future with his direction of play a feature. Fullback Joel Mason was closely watched but was dangerous when he injected himself. Perry said they were on the end of a high scoring line, but he saw several positives. In other A Grade matches, Brothers defeated Western Lions last Friday night 24 – 18 while on Saturday Centrals were too good for Charters Towers winning 34 – 16 with Norths having the bye.

The football season proper in the North kicked off last weekend and as far as the Burdekin Panthers were concerned it was a bit of an anti-climax. The Club played six games, lost five of them and the other one was abandoned when the lights failed!

In the Men’s competitions, against Warriors, the Kalamia Hotel Premiers lost 1-4. Elliott Dal Santo getting the goal, the Burdekin Tyre Services Reserves lost 2-4, (Casper Licciardello and Jay Leckenby). The Fabbro Diesel Service 2nds lost 1-4 (Daniel Wilson) to Brothers White and the Austral Masonry Funkies were leading 3-2 against Warriors (Khyle Marano 2 and Tarryn Smith)when it suddenly went dark.

Hotel Premiers lost 0-9 while the C.A Contracting Reserves were narrowly beaten 1-2, with a goal from Lauren Barra. Not a good start, but it can only get better.

This Friday in fixtures against Estates at home, the Women’s Reserves kick off at 6.30 and the Women’s Premiers at 8.30. The Funkies kick off at 8.30 also. On Saturday the Premiers, Reserves and 2nd Division are all away to Rebels.

The next round of the FFA Cup will be played on 19 June with Far North team Edge Hill, who beat Townsville Brothers in the last round probably up against the Mackay NPL team.

For the Juniors, it is still the school holidays. Team training will begin on 21 April and the season opening will be on 24 April, the ANZAC Day weekend.

Raiders V Parramatta Eels What a fantastic game this will be. Strap yourself in for the Raiders at home to the Eels.

After dropping their first game for the year, the Raiders will be going all out to make amends at home. The Dragons have

shown the other fifteen teams how to beat Parramatta, and clever, experienced coach Ricky Stuart, will have them primed for the game. Raiders will copy the Dragon’s game plan; be up in their face, give them no room to move and hit them with brutal defence. This will be a challenging game with both teams looking to get back into the winning circle after really poor performances last week.

This was well demonstrated in last week’s smashing of the highflying Eels at Bank West Stadium, delivering a brutal power game that dominated the more fancied Parramatta pack. Manly will find it really hard to win this game, considering they lost the worst game of the year against Manly

last week, and Dragons are at home. Dragons will win at home on the back of their newfound power game.

Cowboys V Bulldogs With their first win of the season last week, the Cowboys are off the bottom of the table. Todd Payton has a spring in his step, and the players are smiling, for now! But it could all go pear-shaped if they do not knuckle down and take the winless Dogs seriously.

The winless Bulldogs travel to Townsville having not won against the Cowboys at home.

Hopefully, this will continue, especially on the back of their lacklustre performances. It was a scintillating, almost perfect first half on Sunday against the Wests Tigers. Now Todd needs to get 80 minutes out of the team, and they will win more games than they will lose. A Cowboys win but don’t take the Dogs for granted, or Cowboys will struggle to compete.

defence backed up by Dalton Cox and Brady Vasta. He said he was particularly pleased with Dalton Cox’s work, who was having his first game of League for some time. The Roosters’ try scorers were; Ngairie Tom (2), Brad Stephenson, Declan Dowson, Dalton Cox, Braden Cotter, Brady Vasta, Daniel Archer and Declan Lynch. Despite going down by 22 – 8 to new team Herbert River, the Burdekin Hens pleased coach Frank Beer with how they stuck to their game. “Had Stephanie Monday not injured herself in a tackle, we may have won the game as she was a standout,” Frank said. “The five eight scored a good try, and had it not been for the spot-on defence of the River fullback, a Blackhawks squad player, she would have scored two more.” The coach said it was a good challenging game with his team having several new players to Rugby League, but they learnt a lot and

will be better in the future. The Crushers ladies had reportedly three North Queensland Touch players in their team, and they are a fast team. Frank said he liked the work done by Vaikara Carr backed up by Stephanie Monday and Emma Martin. Caitlin Daley also stood out in her first game of League and will be a danger.

The addition of Jess Clift will also help the team. Jemimah White and Stephanie Monday scored the tries. In other Ladies games, Western Lions beat Brothers 18 – 12, with Centrals winning over Charters Towers 18 – 6 and Norths on the bye.

This Sunday, Burdekin are on the road again in four grades meeting Norths at Peggy Banfield Park at Bushland Beach.

The Ladies will start the day at 11.15am against Norths, with the Under 19 at 12.30pm. The reserve grade will be next at 2.00pm with the A Grade at 3.30pm.

LATE MAIL: A Grade coach Chris Perry said he should have five players back this week, strengthening his side. North Queensland representative Mitchell Guy will return this week, adding that little bit of toughness that was missing last week. Blake Hollywood will add size with Zac Heron in the pack if he passes a fitness test.

Former team captain and Stingers player Ryan Davenport could be a starter along with defender Dylan Carew. Perry knows he cannot take Norths lightly as they should have a group of Palm Islanders in the team, and they are always dangerous with their clever stepping. Reserves coach Ben Smith said the addition of big forward Kade Harch to his team would bring in size and ability. Harch can play in several positions and plays them well.

Hens leader Frank Beer said that Jess Clift would add experience to his young team. He said Jess was working last week and missed the game.

The Under 19s could go in with the same team that beat Herbert River 50- 0, and they are expected to produce the same style of play in this game.

Soccer managed to be played this week and with a slightly better roll up. In a fast match Rainbows beat Blue Balls 5-3.

For Rainbows, Chris Achille 2, Mark Nosworthy, Adam Jarvis and Tobin Stubbs all scored with Steve Hagiaglou, Travis Butler and Russ Dingle replying for Blue Balls. Player of the Week was Adam Jarvis. Don’t forget, kick off time is now 6.30.

Internationally the Matildas played a friendly against 2nd FIFA ranked country Germany losing 2-5. It was the 7th ranked Matilda’s first game in over a year and a bit of a wakeup call.

The Matildas were in action again on Wednesday morning against the Netherlands, presently ranked 4th in the World and in another nasty shock lost 0-5.

In the A League with just six rounds left, Central Coast continues to top ladder despite being held to a draw as were Melbourne City, Sydney FC and Adelaide. It is still very tight at

the top of the table with just five points separating the top six teams. Brisbane is in seventh place and seems to be out of it and in the basement Melbourne Victory won their third game of the season.

The W League Grand Final was played on Sunday with Melbourne Victory beating Sydney 1-0 in the last minute of extra time. Kyra Cooney-Cross scored the only goal direct from a corner.

In the EPL Manchester City lost again but is still eleven points clear of ManU who have opened up a seven point gap over third place Leicester who lost to West Ham who stay fourth. At the bottom of the league it seems to be goodnight West Brom and Sheffield Utd. Bayern seem to have the Bundesliga won, again, with a five point lead over Leipzig with six games left to play. Third placed Wolfsburg is a further six points adrift. Meanwhile in Italy, Inter would seem to have

everything under control and is now eleven points clear of AC Milan and twelve points clear of Juventus with Atalanta fourth.

In Spain Atletico continue to struggle, wining only two of their last five games. They are now a point ahead of Real Madrid with Barcelona another point adrift and Seville in fourth spot. Finally in France, with six

games left Lille still leads PSG by three points with Monaco in third and Lyon in fourth place.

Burdekin Sugar Rush set for big return and organisers for the event are ‘excited’ at the potential this year Daniel Shirkie THE Burdekin Sugar Rush running festival is set to return this year after an unfortunate hiatus due to the COVID-19 pandemic, and organisers couldn’t be more thrilled.

The running event, which features a slew of events for runners of all skill levels and abilities and seeks to promote health and wellbeing will be held on Sunday, April 18.

But this year, the stakes will be even higher, with the Sugar Rush functioning as the curtain-pulling opener for the Athletics North Queensland half-marathon series.

Burdekin Road Runners president Pat Shannon says the event will also be the first of it’s kind since COVID restrictions have been implemented.

“Our race is the first of the ANQ half marathon series each year and the first since COVID restrictions were implemented,” Mr Shannon said.

“We have had a change of venue back to our original, Anzac Park, and have experienced a few challenges in organising the event in order to meet COVID social distancing guidelines.”

“We have a great team who have made these changes much easier to implement.”

While the event is obviously considerably more work with restrictions still in place in some areas and the COVID-19 pandemic still ongoing, the club’s excitement at returning after last year’s bitter pill hasn’t been impacted at all.

“As a club and a running community we are very excited about the prospect of the 2021 Sugar Rush going ahead after the disappointment of the 2020 event being cancelled at short notice due to COVID-19,” Mr Shannon said.

While the last minute cancellation last year was a hefty blow to the region’s committed runners and those

interested in taking part, Mr Shannon says that fortunately, the conditions this year will allow for a mostly unaltered event to take place.

“We are very fortunate that the event will run mostly as our regulars are used to, although there will be no formal presentations this year,” Mr Shannon said.

“All runners will still receive their finisher towels and breakfast as per usual, we will be asking participants and supporters to follow all the social distancing instructions and guidelines on the day.”

Aside from the competitive aspect, the event has long been a proponent of healthy activity and the promotion of physical activity, something that Mr Shannon’s particularly glad to bring back this year.

“The Burdekin Sugar Rush is the marquee event for our club and provides a fantastic platform for recreational runners and walkers to achieve their health and

fitness goals,” Mr Shannon said.

“We traditionally have many participants completing their first events and we are very proud that our event is a catalyst for getting people moving and generally being more active.”

The action will kick off from 6.30am with the 21km running event, before being followed by the 10km event at 7.15am.

The 5km, Seniors, Juniors and Pram Push event all begin at 7.30am.
