Lights, Camera, Covid As many businesses begin to pick up again amid the COVID pandemic, Evelyn and Rob Webb are struggling with the effects of a Hollywood lockdown and a new streaming culture that threatens their industry.

Marina Trajkovich WHEN Evelyn Webb was growing up in the Burdekin in the 1950s, she had five cinemas to choose from.

Then, with the invention of television in the early 60s, the cinema industry in Ayr became obsolete, resurfacing again in 2001 when the Webbs started Delta Cinemas.

Now, as COVID-19 changes the world, streaming services replace the theatre experience and Hollywood grinds to a halt, the business is at risk.

Evelyn says that due to restricted numbers and the lack of movies coming out to draw in viewers, she and her husband Rob were forced to consider selling the cinema, a loved icon in the Burdekin.

“It’s uncertain for everybody, but we just have no idea what we’re doing. We were maybe looking at trying to sell, so those options at the moment are on the table until we work out where it’s going.”

“I can see that in Australia once the government stops paying all those subsidies which they have to do, we’ll find it won’t only be us but

a lot of people who will struggle.”

With Hollywood production on pause and no new movies, what would once be a busy Christmas period is looking to remain devoid of those crowd-drawing releases.

“It’s not justifiable for them; they need to make a lot of money to cover their costs.

Streaming is the next thing, and if that proves successful, it could end this end of the industry,” says Evelyn.

She says that with new, streamable movies going straight to online platforms and skipping the cinema, the whole entertainment industry is shifting, exacerbated by COVID. “It’s probably fast-tracked a lot of stuff that was eventually going to happen and the industry is going to have to take on a new face once the world gets back to normal.”

She says that the loss of the cinema would have a significant impact on the community, detrimental to retirees who enjoy the opportunity to get out of their

homes and for families who come to watch movies with their kids.

“It’s somewhere they can go and be entertained, older people don’t want to be locked in the house all the time, they need places to go.

And for younger children, it’s a safe place for children.”

“It’s the experience of watching it on the big screen, it’s an outing with the family, and it’s a learning experience for young kids too to sit somewhere other than a lounge room.”

in cinemas to huge success, following dismal views on pricey streaming services in the months prior.

Evelyn says that despite the cinema’s drop in revenue and turnout, movies targeted towards children and older filmgoers have been doing well, with film production in Australia flourishing.

“The industry out here in good times is quite big. We’ve got two Australian movies at the moment, and they’re doing quite well.”

“Australia has been so much better and so much safer than the northern hemisphere for them to make movies.”

She says that the first few months of 2021 could be a good indicator for how things will play out next year, with a delayed James Bond and Fast and Furious teasing the return of Hollywood flicks.

She hopes that the blockbusters will finally be released, attracting the younger crowds that have the potential to fill the theatres again.

“The next three months, probably till the end of January will set the tone of where it’s going to go.”

“We’re just riding it out at the moment, we just don’t know how this industry is going to end up.”

A FLEXIBLE education centre in the Burdekin has received approval to move into a new facility and become a permanent home for the program.

The Burdekin Education Engagement Program (BEEP) has been operating out of the Ayr PCYC but has received approval to redevelop facilities at the old Ayr Racecourse.

The program offers practical and flexible learning for disengaged youth and those who may require a more robust and hands-on approach to learning, rather than in the classroom.

Burdekin Shire Council moved the recommendation to approve the development application, subject to listed conditions.

The BEEP operates under the Townsville Flexible Learning Centre, serving under Edmund Rice Education Australia’s Xavier Flexi Schools Network.

The program’s presence in the Burdekin and Bowen takes flexible learning back to its roots

to limit intergenerational disadvantage.

The program entered an application to take over the greyhound pavilion at the old racecourse, to include classrooms, toilets, a kitchen, and veranda as part of the refurbishment.

The new facility will allow the program to host up to 45 students, improving on the current 20.

The first stage of the development will be selffunded, with further stages hoped to be aided by government support.

Tim Young from the Townsville Flexible Learning Centre said the approval would benefit the community moving forward.

The program is currently negotiating clauses in the lease and will release tenders for renovations in the new year.

The Burdekin Education Engagement Program hopes to move into the facility by mid-2021.

The Burdekin Singers and Theatre Company, practically perfect in every way, are returning to the stage for their rendition of stage musical Mary Poppins amidst COVID restrictions.

Marina Trajkovich THE Burdekin Singers and Theatre Company are back in action after what has been a shaky beginning to their rehearsal period due to COVID-19.

The troupe has started working on their newest production, Mary Poppins and are looking forward to putting on an incredible show next year, following what has been a sleepy year for the entertainment industry.

Pat Nuttall, the Director of the group, says that the entire crew is looking forward to being on the stage again, sharing their work with the community, and filling the void left by COVID and the absence of live performances.

She says that production has been slightly delayed

by COVID restrictions, as theatre number requirements continue to shift.

“It’s been a bit strange because we started off being allowed thirty on stage but now since last week we’ve found out that we’re allowed 63.”

“So thats been a bit of a pain because it means a change in numbers. Limiting people to thirty on stage was a really hard thing to do.

We try to use everyone who wants to be in the show.”

She says that it’s been more stressful than usual, putting everything together but that the entire troupe is looking forward to creating a fantastic production.

“Now its a little bit easier in the fact that we can have more on stage. We don’t have to cull people which I’m so glad I don’t have to do, but it also means our costume requirements have gone up.

“The stress is the

unknown.”

Stephanie Webber has been a part of the group since she was 15 and is now looking forward to playing Mrs Brill in the musical.

She says that although it’s a shame they can’t have the accompanying orchestra next year due to restricted numbers in the theatre, everyone is looking forward to putting on a good show, grateful for the opportunity to perform.

“I think rehearsal wise we’ve been lucky that we’ve been able to,” she says.

“We’re really lucky, we get a lot of support from the Burdekin community, everyone loves coming together to see it and we have such amazing talent in this town.”

An online GoFundMe fundraiser has been created to assist young Dean Webber with ongoing medical and legal costs. It comes after the inquest on the Alva Beach incident will proceed into next year.

The fundraiser, set up by a friend, has collected over seven thousand dollars in just five days.

Intersection crash A multi-vehicle crash on the Bruce Highway on Friday caused disruptions to afternoon traffic, leaving three people with minor injuries. An SUV was rearended, with the incident occurring near continuing road upgrades outside of Ayr. It is a reminder for motorists to be aware of their surroundings, particularly in the roadwork areas.

Remembering our Veterans Veterans and members of the community gathered in Anzac Park to commemorate Remembrance Day VETERANS and members of the public gathered at the ANZAC park memorial this Remembrance Day to commemorate those who have served, standing for a two minute silence on the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month.

The service was opened by pastor Ian Ness from the Burdekin Uniting Church and led by David Christensen, the president of the Ayr Anzac Memorial Club.

Local veterans, mayor Lyn Mclaughlin and the school captains of Burdekin Catholic High School all lay a wreath at the Ayr War Memorial to pay their respects.

Among them was Paul Brice, wearing the medals of his father and those awarded to him after his years of service.

“My entire family has been involved in the forces, I made

some pretty good friends in Vietnam,” he says.

“We had all my family in WWII, my father had seven brothers and they were all involved in it.”

He came to the Burdekin for the first time in 1973 after getting out of the army and has been here ever since.

“Remembrance Day is a way to remember the armistice, the silence of the guns.”

Originally Armistice Day, Remembrance Day marks the end of the first World War, where at eleven am on the eleventh of November, the guns fell silent on the Western Front in 1918 for the first time in four years.

The two minutes silence held across Australia at this time is in remembrance for those who sacrificed their lives.

“My grandfather served in the First World War, my father served in the First World War, I joined to go to Vietnam but I had a training accident before I could go. Both my sons have served in Afganistan and Iraq.”

“I was at the school of army health because I was training to be a medic and I had a helicopter accident which was enough to keep me at home. I couldn’t go overseas, so I was trained as an instructor in the medical corps.”

“I know that with my family and my sons especially, their kids are brought up celebrating what’s been given for us and I think it’s slowly spreading out there.”

George Venables from Ayr was also at the service to commemorate past and present servicemen. He is acknowledging the men he fought alongside overseas, during the Vietnam War and two years in Thailand.

“We just need to remember that these people got up and well, basically fought for us.

Fought for the freedoms that we enjoy now.”

Aeroclub getting off the ground Hayden Menso THEY say the sky’s the limit, but there’s no stopping members of the Burdekin Aeroclub.

The group comprises like-minded community members interested in aviation, including Burdekin history and local industry development.

Operating at the Aerodrome in Brandon, the club has been upgrading its facilities thanks to a grant, making it more accessible and modern for pilots and the public alike.

The Aeroclub now has a refurbished clubhouse, open for light aircraft pilots, with a new kitchen and dining facilities.

The Aerodrome has been wired up with electrical points for future hangarage, with development made by Burdekin Shire Council, plus now has an avgas bowser for aircraft who need to stop in and re-fuel.

Aeroclub Secretary Brian Richardson said the club and the Aerodrome could boost the local aviation industry and become a general aviation hub for North Queensland.

“There’s very good knowledge in the area of aviation here. It’s a perfect place to learn, train, and share ideas,” Mr. Richardson said.

“The location, environment, facilities, and the structures are already here.”

Running for many years now, Aeroclub sits in the perfect position for anyone wanting to learn to fly or gain knowledge of the industry.

“The Aerodrome is open, with fields around it.

There are no mountains, which makes it very safe to fly and learn at,” Mr. Richardson said.

The club is an avenue for community members to become exposed to the industry, with a potential need for more pilots and maintenance staff postCOVID. “It’s an ideal environment for young people to learn and come and talk to us. They can become ‘friends’ of the Aeroclub, and perhaps be set on a career path in aviation.”

The club also hosts a Flyers BBQ Breakfast on the second Sunday of each month for the public, with airplanes on display.

Many club members are also pilots, meaning you, too, could take a memorable trip to the sky in our very own backyard.

Curving for Success Marina Trajkovich CURVES women’s gym in Ayr has been working with the Burdekin School to deliver weekly classes to their special needs students, boosting the girl’s confidence and improving their fitness and social skills.

The program is part of the curriculum for their seniors, with the girls coming to Curves once a week to go through the gym’s circuit, made up of several exercise machines.

Joanne Barbagallo has been running the Curves gym in Ayr for seven years.

She says that the addition of classes for the students of the Burdekin School with the Burdekin’s disabilities service, Flexi, fits in with the gym’s mission to support women.

“I think that’s really what

our philosophy is here, that we’re a gym for all women, all fitness levels, all sizes. It’s a safe space.”

“That’s why this fits with us too because they feel comfortable here, it just goes with who we are and what we do as a women’s only gym,” she says.

Joanne has hosted the Burdekin School’s fitness group for over a year, reflecting on the changes she’s seen in the girls she has come to know through the program.

She says that running the classes has been a huge learning experience for her and some of the other gym members.

“One thing that I learned was how to communicate.

Not everyone knows how to communicate and speak

with the students who have a range of intellectual and or multiple disabilities. And so I think it’s nice for the girls to be in that mainstream class for the other members as well to understand that they’re just like you or me, they’ve just got different needs,” she says.

Carol Nielsen is a carer at the Burdekin School and has been accompanying the girls to their gym classes, among other activities that work to boost their life skills.

She says that there is an existing discomfort in the community surrounding disability and people with special needs, but we can reduce that stigma by increasing programs like this one.

“Now that we’ve been going to Woolworths twice a week, people don’t stare at them like they used to, they’re a lot

more accepting, and I think the more we get out there, the less stigma there will be,” she says.

“It’s good to get the girls out with the ladies when they come here because they just treat them like you and me.”

Both Carol and Joanne have seen the girls become more and more confident each week, with some of the girls joining other mainstream classes with other members.

Ashleigh Mallinson and Matilda Essex, students from the Burdekin School, say that they look forward to coming to the classes every week and that while they work hard, the classes are always fun.

Carol says “It’s been going well, it’s making them a little more independent too and to think for themselves.

This year I think has been fantastic for our participating students.”

The event, titled In Conversation with Mary Who?, gave eight ladies a chance to meet Trent Dalton, internationally-bestselling and award-winning author and journalist.

Hosted at A Touch of Salt over a sit-down meal, the event offered a Q and A session about his second book, All Our Shimmering Skies.

The group of Burdekin bookworms said it was a night to remember.

“He worked the room and answered questions; it was a very enjoyable night,” local book-lover Alexis Nielsen said.

Ms Nielsen said the evening gave readers a

chance to meet the author and further indulge in his works.

“It gives you a different point of view when you meet the author. He’s a very good writer; it can be a little too literary for some, but his first book has been a top-seller.”

Ms Nielsen says meeting Trent was a treat, as some members of the ‘book club’ loved his first novel.

“He’s a very approachable and down-toearth man. He’s only 40, so still young, and not a big-note at all.”

The event, a casual and laid-back affair, was a memorable experience.

“We don’t get big authors like that to come up here often, so it was a very good experience,” Ms Nielsen said.

Woodcraft market set to go

IN WHAT’S been a tough year for many of our community groups, things are starting to turn. And it’s not just the wood that’s being fashioned at the Burdekin Woodcrafts Association.

The group will be holding a mini-market this Saturday as a fundraiser for the year.

With many sale items made from native wood, members have been busy creating pieces for all around the home.

The association, open to members of all ages, usually fundraises its operations through raffles and selling handmade pieces at local festivals; however, COVID restrictions meant they could not do those this year.

Burdekin Woodcrafts Association VicePresident Merv Mohr said the market would

be a new chance for the community to visit the club and find a unique item to take home.

“We will be operating on the day, so people can see what’s involved in the club,” he said.

Clocks, napkin caddies, cutting boards, candleholders, plus an outdoor bar are just some of the many items that will be on offer.

The group will also have timber slabs available for sale for your DIY projects.

The market will also be an opportunity to stock up on unique, handcrafted gifts for Christmas and support the local group.

The mini-market will take place at the Woodcrafts workshop at 30 Little Drysdale St, Ayr, with a COVID-safe plan in place. It will open at 9 am, with cash preferred on the day.

In Brief Sports commitment award Ayr resident Sandra Wight has been awarded the Medium LGA Senior Service to NQ Sport Award Winner. The Hayden Menso award comes from the North Queensland Sports Foundation, in recognition of her work with Burdekin Basketball. Burdekin Local News will have coverage of the award presentation when it occurs.

Christmas Carols return This year the Burdekin will come alive with Christmas cheer and festive singing on December 13.

A COVID-Safe Christmas Carols event will be held at Home Hill State High School. The Carols will be hosted by local celebrities Crystal and Brady from Star 1063 radio.

The free event will be ticketed, for attendance and contact tracing purposes. Check the Burdekin Shire Council website for further details.

Tragic home incident Burdekin Woodcrafts Vice President Merv Mohr and new member Jollea Macdonald with some of the pieces for sale

An incident involving two residents, aged in their 70s and 80s, at their home, has led to their sudden passing. Police attended a scene at an Ayr residence, where Sib and Maria Grasso had been involved in two incidences, leading to head and chest injuries.

It is believed one involved a home elevator. They were taken to Townsville University Hospital, but passed away overnight.

An investigation is continuing, with police preparing a report for the coroner. The community was shocked by the incident, with messages of condolence going out to the family.

Indigenous elder Kelvin Lampton from the Gudjuda reference group opened with a smoking ceremony, inviting good spirits to the area.

NAIDOC Week celebrations kicked off at the Ayr Hospital for the first time this week, drawing members of the indigenous community and staff in a celebration of culture, history and community.

The celebrations opened with a welcome to country and a smoking ceremony led by elder Kelvin Lampton from the Gudjuda reference group, followed by traditional dances from Torres Strait Islander dancers and the Mutkin Bumba Dance Group.

The smoking ceremony and afternoon tea were the first of what will be a week-long celebration of Indigenous history at the hospital, with educational seminars and informative installations throughout the facility.

NAIDOC, short for National Aborigines and Islanders Day Observance Committee, is an annual celebration of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander culture, typically taking place in July but put on hold due to COVID restrictions.

This year’s theme is ‘Always has, always will be,’ recognising and celebrating indigenous people all over Australia as the original custodians of our country.

Ramona Nayhow, a health worker at the Ayr Hospital, says that the inclusion of NAIDOC week at the hospital has been a positive step in acknowledging the indigenous cultures that make up the community.

“This is the first time we’ve done something like this,” she says.

“It’s good because it’s letting people know that we’re still here. We’ve never conceded our lands, so it’s just given that knowledge to them and saying, look this is our history.”

She says that although it’s great that the hospital is celebrating NAIDOC, more events in the community would be beneficial to continue this celebration of culture throughout the year.

“I think if you keep having it, there’s more of that acknowledgement. It’s just about being recognised.” >>

She explains the significance of the birthing tree, installed this week in the maternity ward of the hospital.

The symbolic piece in the hospital is representative of the trees previously carved out by indigenous communities, designed to give women privacy whilst giving birth within their trunks.

Another display reveals the uses of native bush medicines, set up in the waiting room of the hospital.

“The bush medicine was their way of surviving, and they still use it today,” says Ramona.

Reneta Noah is another indigenous health worker at the hospital who helped put the celebrations together.

“I’m the only indigenous health worker in the hospital; Ramona is mental health.”

“We had to work together to make it all happen and make it more comfortable, the atmosphere for our mob when they come to the hospital,” she says.

She says that celebrations like NAIDOC week help to get younger generations of Indigenous Burdekinites to understand and appreciate their roots, helping to pass on the knowledge of their history.

Rachel Dennis and her partner Jonathan from the Mutkin Bumba dance group agree that regular events in the community are an opportunity to help pass on this knowledge.

The dances they performed at the NAIDOC week ceremony have been passed down through Jonathan’s family for four generations, now taught amongst the youth in their community.

Rachel says that after the group formed in 2016, support has been strong with more families wanting to get involved.

“It’s such an honour and pleasure for us to do and we feel blessed to be able to do this with this generation of dancers, it just brings our community closer.”

CELEBRATING the hard work of our Indigenous community is an essential aspect of Australian Human Services, particularly this NAIDOC Week.

Burdekin resident Jan Jensen has received a Human Services Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Employee Achievement award, receiving a Highly Commended.

The award commends Department of Human Services of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander employees who give commitment and excellence to their role, making a significant contribution to the work of the agency.

Working with Human Services for almost 30 years, Jan was nominated for the award by colleagues and team leaders.

The achievement award

acknowledged Jan’s success in overcoming an illness, which resulted in losing her hearing and transitioning out of her managerial role and into another in the Ayr centre.

Now co-ordinating Indigenous learning within the department, Mrs. Jensen is described as a strong role model for all indigenous and non-indigenous staff in the centre.

“She’s had to overcome a lot in the last two years, and we are very proud of her, so we wanted her to be recognised,” Coralie Tinus, Ayr Service Centre Manager, said.

Human Services has four categories of awards, with a winner and highly commended for each, meaning Mrs. Jensen was one of only eight recipients in the country.

“Jan was thrown into a

processing role and was taken off of her normal role and was processing hundreds of new claims for the JobSeeker payment. So it’s very diverse to be able to move to where she’s needed,” Mrs. Tinus said.

The award is a testament and recognition to Mrs. Jensen’s willingness to help others through her work and overcome challenges both personally and in the workplace.

“I am a proud Indigenous person, and I do want to show that we can achieve. Even with the hearing loss, that was a huge challenge; to not just learned the new work, but achieve and do a good job,” Jan said.

“I do pride myself on doing a good job, and I felt challenged to accept what’s happened and to do the best at the new role I’d been pushed into.”

Home Hill State High School Awards Night The 57th Annual Presentation of Awards ceremony was held in the Memorial Hall Home Hill on Tuesday 20 October.

The format differed from other years and was divided into two sittings to comply with the venues’ Covid-Safe Plan. This year we combined the academic and sporting awards’ nights to celebrate all of the achievements of the student body.

Over 220 awards were presented over the two sessions, to acknowledge the numerous and extensive

accomplishments of students in academic, vocational, cultural, leadership, community service and sporting fields.

A number of invited guests usually attend the occasion, unfortunately due to Covid restrictions, this was sadly not an option. However, our students were enthusiastically supported by invited family members and their teachers.

Deputy Principal Mr Steven Buttsworth commenced proceedings in the Junior School Program, followed

by School Captains, Laura Loizou and Clinton Gosling warmly welcoming the assembly. Home Hill High Principal, Mr Frank Kingma, highlighted how our students’ achievements are even more impressive in light of this extraordinary year.

During both sessions, talented students Malcolm Balmer and Nathan Shand entertained the audience with their musical talents, providing mood music to the awaiting guests.

To close the Junior Program, Junior School Captains, Isabella Linton and Joshua Machin delivered the Vote of Thanks.

The Senior School Program was conducted in a similar manner to the Junior School. In addition to the aforementioned proceedings, President Kirra Simpson and Vice-President Brhee Christensen delivered the Student Council Report.

As an introduction to their leadership roles for the coming year, year 11 students ably assisted as speakers throughout the ceremony.

LEADING the way forward to the future, students from Burdekin Christian College recently competed in the First Lego League Australia competition, hosted by CQUniversity.

Students from years 5-10 engaged with other teams from across the Townsville region, working with robotics to solve design and innovation problems.

Two teams from the college, Techno Knights and Techno Angels, took part on October 25th, winning third place in the competition and a rising star award, respectively.

by CQUniversity Education lecturer Dr. Bree Kitt, who praised the teams on their ideas, teamwork, and performance on the day.

“For the teams here, what the judges commented on

was the way most people in the team had a voice; that they didn’t rely on one person to come up with the solutions,” Dr. Kitt said.

The competition was a welcome extra-curricular opportunity, given the disruptions faced in the classroom throughout this year.

Students made robots from Lego, programming them to solve various missions.

The teams then talked about the design process, its challenges, and how the challenges were overcome.

“The students would create a code as they were making attachments, looking at different sensors they might use. Then they had to send it out on the field,” Mr. James Pacey said, Dean of Curriculum, Innovation, and Student Futures.

to navigate a pull-up bar, hopscotch, and rowing machine, giving students a chance to work with realworld applications of science and strategy.

“They all got to contribute; it wasn’t just one person dominating, which is good. I was really excited about that,” Mr. Pacey said.

“It’s really good to see because you do have the younger students working with the teenagers, and even though that’s quite a significant age gap, what you actually see is children in grade 5 are highly competent at solving big-world problems, even though they’re only still small people,” Dr. Kitt said.

The students said they enjoyed the chance to compete and are looking forward to going back next year.

Law+Order FROM WHERE I SIT On Friday 6 November, Ayr Police were conducting investigations into a theft from a local retail store on Queen Street when they located a 50-year-old man.

As a result, this Burdekin resident was issued a Notice to Appear for one count of stealing and is due to appear in Ayr Magistrates Court on 23 November.

On Saturday 7 November, Ayr Police were conducting investigations into a complaint of a breach of privacy at a toilet block in a local park when they located a 41-year-old man. As a result, this Townsville resident was issued a Notice to Appear for one count of observations in breach of privacy and unlicenced driving and is due to appear in Ayr Magistrates Court on 7 December.

TRAFFIC CRASHES In the past 3 weeks there have been three reported traffic crashes on the road works between Ayr and Home Hill. Two involved nose to tail collisions and the third was a sideswipe. Generally, these types of traffic crashes occur due to lack of judgement, concentration and/or distraction.

When driving through roadworks, concentration levels should be heightened due to changes in road markings, queuing or stopped traffic, changes to where you can drive, road machinery and road workers moving about their work site and sometimes frequent changes in speed limits.

Wrapped in White Against Domestic Violence Friday 20th November 2020, White Ribbon Queensland urges every household to tie a white ribbon on their letterbox to raise awareness against domestic violence.

WITH 1 in 3 Australian women at risk of being a victim of domestic violence in their lifetime, the White Ribbon campaign aims to visibly raise awareness of this operant conditioning within our society.

According to Chiu-Hing Chan, Chair, White Ribbon Queensland, “the statistics surrounding domestic violence in the home tripled during COVID. “We know that events on their own are not enough – we need communities to mobilise for change,” said Chiu-Hing Chan, Chair of White Ribbon Queensland, “The purpose of White Ribbon Day this year is to not only speak about the change that is needed, but to get involved in creating it.

It saddens me to say that on average 52 women die from domestic and family violence each year, and that number increases every year.”

“By tying a White Ribbon around your letterbox, you encourage everyone in your community to become involved and demonstrate their stance against domestic violence whilst creating an opportunity to have that important conversation,” continued Mr Chan.

White Ribbon Queensland encourages everyone to decorate their letterboxes with white ribbons, white balloons, white lights, white teddy bears, white flowers, streamers or bed sheets to raise awareness and conversations surrounding Domestic Violence.

White Ribbon Day aims to raise awareness of domestic violence, promote respectful relationships and creating a community free of violence and abuse. Middle-aged Australians hardest hit in COVID - losing jobs and homes as they enter sunset years NEW Research reveals that older Australians are working for longer just “to sustain their financial positions” and retain their homes.

Coupled with a report from the Brotherhood of St Laurence that shows that Australians aged 51 to 65 have borne the brunt of job losses in the COVID-19 inspired recession, many are now struggling to hold onto their homes as they nudge their sunset years.

At a time when they thought they’d be contemplating retirement, older Australians are again pounding the pavement and facing stiff competition from young people entering the job market or looking for work after losing their jobs or having their hours cut.

However, housing expert Ian Ugarte said that

a recently released PRD Research report may not be all bad news for mature Australians with a mortgage.

“With nearly half a million mature Australians already losing their jobs or having their hours cut as a result of COVID-19, it’s likely that a wave of older Australians will be unable to meet their home loan repayments and be forced to sell.

“Unfortunately, this coincides with the end of economic relief offered by financial institutions and the Federal Government, making their positions even more grim,” the co-founder of Small is the New Big said.

Ugarte said however, it was also a time when people were more open to opportunities not previously considered - opportunities that could

actually improve their position unexpectedly.

“The PRD research suggests that the concept of ‘shared living’ is not necessarily welcomed by mature-aged owner occupiers.

“Instead of the unappealing prospect of opening up your entire home to a complete stranger, ‘shared living’ can mean making a partial conversion to the existing family home to create an entirely separate living space – complete with its own bedroom, bathroom, living room and kitchenette for the newly acquired ‘tenant’.

“So, while a full renovation may be out of reach for most owner-occupiers in the current climate, a partial conversion can be completed for a fraction of the cost in about two weeks, with these costs easily recouped within the first year.

“Not only will homeowners have the benefits of an additional income stream to help service the loan, they retain all the trappings of their own home, including privacy and independence,” he said.

Ugarte wants to remove the stigma of ‘shared living’ and encourage older Australians to explore adaptable housing strategies like this that allow homes to expand and contract in response to its owner’s needs.

“It’s vital to preserve the relevant state-based policies and regulations that enable these sorts of renovations to ensure we can keep older Australians in their own homes for longer and provide affordable housing opportunities wherever we can,” he said.

The Conversation Burdekin Seasonal Worker Shortage

Scottish farm worker Jonathan McKenna (left) says that many of the remaining backpackers would happily continue their farm work and fill this labour shortage if offered incentives and visa extensions.

WHEN Jonathan McKenna was working in a trendy restaurant-bar in Glasgow and with British Airways, he had no idea he would be picking watermelons on a farm in the North Queensland heat in the next year.

Now, he’s practically a Burdekin resident and has more farming experience than most, having spent six months picking blueberries, cherries and mangoes during his travels throughout Australia.

“Going from that kind of industry to doing farm work, it was completely different,” he says of his time in the Burdekin.

He says that picking watermelons for up to 10 hours a day has been the most physically challenging work he’s ever done, but that it’s also been the most rewarding part of his travels.

He attributes the positive experience to the sense of community he’s found amongst the backpackers and farmers during his two months in Ayr. “It has been very tough at times, but it’s been probably the best experience of my whole time in Australia.”

“It’s the people you meet and never in my life did I think I would be picking watermelon, so it’s been a very good experience.”

“I’ve actually really enjoyed it, and I wouldn’t take it back for anything,” he says.

Many travellers coming to Australia on working holiday visas pursue farm work as a way to extend their visas, helping out farmers in need of seasonal workers.

By completing 88 days of farm work during their first year in Australia, travellers get a second year on their visa.

By completing six months of farm work in their second year, they get a third with many vying for permanent residency and job sponsorship down the track.

Backpackers make a significant proportion of the agricultural labour force, and with strict international border closures forbidding new travellers from entering, farmers are struggling.

Many businesses have been left without workers, resulting in thousands of dollars of crop losses due to labour shortages.

“I wasn’t originally gonna do my six months,

but then COVID hit, and I figured the best way to save some money was to work on the farm,” says Jonathan.

“I decided to stay because back home is even worse than Australia and I figured I probably wouldn’t get a job.”

He says that he feels for farmers who are struggling to find employees, noticing the influx of backpackers leaving the area to travel for the Christmas period after completing their working hours, or returning home.

As 30,000 Australian’s remain stranded overseas and working holidaymakers remain refused from the country, the problem is set to get significantly worse.

The National Farmers’ Federation (NFF) has recently teamed up with the Backpacker Youth Tourism Advisory Panel (BYTAP), urging the federal government to allow travellers into Australia, thus saving the agriculture and tourism industries.

Jonathan says that many of the remaining backpackers would happily continue their farm work and fill this labour shortage if offered

incentives and visa extensions.

He is aiming for permanent residency and says that if offered an extra year on his visa or an alternative step towards full time living in Australia, he would commit to doing extra farm work without hesitation.

Maddie Ham from Reading, England had been working on a capsicum farm in Ayr, however, has switched to picking limes following the end of the capsicum season.

She agrees that if backpackers were able to extend their visas by another year or if offered sponsorship as a step towards residency, it would draw in more travellers to the region.

Maddie adds that while most work in Ayr is paid hourly, this is not consistent across Australia, leaving many backpackers feeling exploited and underpaid.

She says that guaranteed hourly work could encourage workers to return to farms.

“It’s been a good experience here in terms of the work because most farms here are hourly.”

the same as people on hourly, so you’ve got to work hard for it, but you can match it up and potentially make even more,” says Maddie.

She says that Ayr has a great variety of work and that the owners of Delta Backpackers, which doubles as an employment service, have been amazing.

She adds that while the experience has been challenging, she wouldn’t hesitate to come back to Ayr to save money or extend her visa.

“It’s back-breaking work. The first two and a half to three weeks was so painful, but then you get back to it, you do adjust to it, and it gets a bit easier.”

“You start to get to know your team very well.

That’s the thing with farm work; you’re living and working together, so you make really good friends, which is nice.”

She says that the community feeling in Ayr

has been amazing and that Delta Backpackers has a fantastic social and working atmosphere.

Going to the Kalamia Hotel or the Queens after a tough working week has become a staple of life here.

With backpackers starting to travel or head to cities for the Christmas period after months of hard work, farmers are in a volatile position.

However, it’s a healthy sign for Australia’s struggling tourism industry, with money saved on farms going back into the economy.

Maddie decided to return to the country after what was supposed to be a one month holiday, falling in love with the Aussie lifestyle.

“It’s a completely different culture; it’s just part of the Australian backpacker experience working on a farm. In Australia, there’s just so much to see.”

Emma Smith – Surf Woman of the Year entrant

ARRIVING in Australia eight years ago from Ireland, one backpacker turned lifesaver is making big waves.

Emma Smith didn’t ever think she’d be representing the Burdekin as the Surf Woman of the Year entrant for 2020 – 2021, but is taking on the challenge to do her nowhome proud.

Many may know Emma as a bartender but may not know she is studying early childhood education, working as an assistant educator at Burdekin Christian College.

A member of the Ayr Surf Life Saving Club for five years now, Emma was asked to represent our club in the statewide program.

Getting involved in the club through captain Lisa Furnell, Emma completed her lifesaving Bronze Medallion and takes part in weekend patrols.

The Surf Woman of the Year program, formerly called Surf Girl, gives female surf club members across the state a chance to take part in selfdevelopment and leadership while raising vital funds for their local club.

“It’s all about empowering women in sports, and pushing women into leadership, and getting their ideas out,” Ms. Smith said.

The program, which runs for nine months, will see Emma host events and help create awareness of life-saving clubs’ importance.

“Queensland is the only region in Australia that does this sort of program as a fundraiser for clubs,” she said.

Emma has just returned from an introductory weekend in Brisbane, where she met

with little lifesavers, speaking about CPR, beach games, and rescue-based activities.

Meeting the other twenty entrants was a great start to the program and getting to know the other women taking part.

“Learning about innovation and marketing the program, listening to guest speakers, and hearing from last year’s winner was a great experience,” Emma said.

The Ayr Surf Life Saving Club has a long history of taking part in the program, never missing a year, with Emma being the 41st entrant in 2021.

Emma says being a club member helped her get to know people in our community, having not lived here her whole life.

“It’s great to find friendships and meet people and be part of the community. It’s also nice to have a skill, and to help someone when they might need it to give back,” Emma said.

With many events planned during her time as Surf Woman entrant, Emma is looking forward to the experience and sharing it with her club and the Burdekin community.

“I was a bit nervous at first, but there’s a lot of support. I’m really excited to be a part of it.”

Amdett Services’ Thomas and Elias Papadimitriou celebrating two years of the recycling scheme

Celebrating two years of Containers for Change Doing good for the environment and your wallet is all part of the Containers for Change scheme across Queensland.

The program is celebrating two years since its introduction in November 2018.

The initiative was introduced by the Queensland Government, giving people a 10cent refund for every eligible drink container you return.

Local family-run business Amdett Services & Plastic Recycling opened its refund point at Greenacres when the scheme began, recycling thousands of containers since.

Dimitrios and Peter Papadimitriou decided to apply for Containers for Change and bring the service to the Burdekin, adding to their existing recycling business.

The refund scheme soon took off, with the community coming on board to recycle for the better.

“The people around the area are really supportive. They’re keen recyclers, but it also helps that there’s an incentive, the fact that you get money for it,” Dimitrios Papadimitriou said.

The scheme was initially conceived to clean up Queensland by eliminating litter and incentivising recycling.

Containers for Change was modelled by the success of the South Australian recycling scheme.

“That’s what one of the main aims was, to clean up Queensland. There was a couple of different ways, and they chose this way,” Mr. Papadimitriou said.

In the two years, Queensland has recycled 2.8 billion containers.

“A lot of kids do it, and grandparents

do it for their grandkids. Local schools, sporting clubs, and associations use it for fundraising. It definitely does its job as being a community-minded scheme, which is what it was set up to do,” employee Thecla Papadimitriou said.

Amdett has so helped return $425,000 to the community through the recycling refund scheme.

“Everyone needs a little bit of a hand. We’re happy to provide this service, especially in this area. Because it’s only small, compared to places like Townsville,” Mrs. Papadimitriou said.

Not only is Containers for Change a benefit for the local community, but it’s better for the environment than people think.

“With these container depots, the stuff that comes in is recycled. It’s guaranteed to be recycled. It’s a sought-after commodity because it’s all hand sorted. Even when it goes through the machine, it’s still one by one and clean,” Mr. Papadimitriou said.

To date in the two years, Amdett Services has recycled over 630,000 glass bottles, 640,000 plastic containers, and 3 million aluminium tins.

Ergon Energy demonstrates the power of planning for disaster AFTER an intense start to storm season amid the spectre of COVID-19 and La Nina, Ergon Energy is urging Queenslanders not to leave emergency planning until the last minute.

Community Safety Manager Aaron Smith said safety should be at the top of everyone’s checklist.

“Preparing your family, home or business for a severe weather event can help lessen the blow if it eventuates.

Aaron said.

General Manager Field Delivery Chris Hooper said Ergon’s and Energex’s recent response to severe storms showed their readiness to support communities through the safe restoration of power.

“Our field crews passed the first test of the season with flying colours, but we know there are challenges ahead because the risk of cyclones and floods is greater this year and our operational response must be COVID-safe.

“Between Ergon and Energex we have 2.3 million customers connected to the electricity network across Queensland and we’re here to support them in all kinds of weather, but we do need everyone to do their bit and get ready.

“We’ve all seen the devastation natural disasters leave behind and you need to be prepared to be without power for days, not hours,

because fixing the network when there is damage across a wide area takes time,” Chris said.

Townsville-based Area Manager Katrina Davidson said the memories of last year’s catastrophic flooding were still fresh in people’s minds.

“It has obviously been a long road to recovery for those who’ve had to rebuild, including some of our own people, but we have learnt some valuable lessons from an awful event.

“While we are accustomed to emergency response our experience during this unprecedented, rapidlyevolving weather event in Townsville reinforced the need to prepare for the unexpected. That message has never been more important than in 2020 when we’re facing the dual challenges of a pandemic and a La Nina event,” Katrina said.

Regulations come with the passing of the The Environmental Protection (Great Barrier Reef Protection Measures) and Other Legislation Amendment Bill, passed by the Queensland Parliament in September.

and banana producers in the Burdekin region must meet the general record keeping requirements from 1 December 2019. Grains and horticulture producers may also need to do this once a minimum practice agricultural standard has been developed for those industries.

Sugarcane growers in the Burdekin region will also have to comply with the minimum practice agricultural standards from 1 December 2019. They will need to complete a farm nitrogen and

phosphorus budget from 1 December 2021.

Graziers in the Burdekin region must comply with the minimum practice agricultural standards from 1 December 2020. Banana, grains and horticulture producers in the Burdekin must do this from 1 December 2022.

All new or new or expanded cropping and horticulture activities on five hectares or more without a cropping history will be required to have an environmental authority

(permit) from 1 June 2021.

Operators of new or changed regulated industrial land use activities such as new sewage treatment plants, land-based aquaculture facilities or mines will also be required to meet new discharge standards from 1 June 2021.

Wednesday Ladies Results.

A ladies stableford event was played last Wednesday sponsored by Glen Dell Fashions many thanks for your support, and the Overall Winner was the old rebels basketball point guard from way back Vicki Adcock, but she had to win on a count back from the fast finishing Donna Boccalatte in second place, other place getters were Tuk Williams, Wendy Baker, Betty Durrant, Debbie Searle, Patricia Lawson.

Thursday Club Results.

It took him a long time this season to have a win but on Thursday Trevor Mc Gowan cleaned up the field with twenty seven points second was Rod Williams with twenty three points and third was Steve Hatherall on twenty two points after it needed a cut of the cards.

Nearest to the pins 8a Jason Dowie, 8b Keith Hibberd, 9a Owen Baure, (b keith Hibberd,12a David Edwards, 12b Mr skinner, 18a Steve Hatherall.

Other winners were the meat tray Callan Oar and the carton Brendan Egan.

Friday veterans Results.

Good to see seventeen players last Friday and it was (the Doc) Brendan Trezise winning the men’s event with seventeen points then we had a count back for second with two players sixteen points and it was Neale Mahoney second and Peter Saxby third then we had John Lewis fourth on fourteen points and the old Butcher Les Shoobert fifth on twelve. In the ladies event Loretta Mauro was a clear winner on twenty one points, second was Janet Trezise on seventeen points and third Patricia Schlieff with fourteen points.

Home Hill Junior Cricket

Last Friday afternoon saw fewer numbers at the Home Hill cricket grounds with some players missing due to the Northern QLD U14 Championships and other commitments. Only one game was played with mixture of Under 11s and U14s in each team. Adam Camer top scored again this week with 20 runs followed by Kailan Tustin on 17, both unbeaten. The younger bowlers came out on top with the ball this game, Eamon Casey 2/2, Perry Munro 2/3 and Emily Town 2/7 were the stand outs. Jacob Machin, one of the Under 14s, also did well with figures of 2 for 6.

Our Under 13 team had a home game this week against Wests, but the home ground advantage wasn’t enough with us going down by 8 runs. The games we have lost so far this season have only been by a handful of runs and the coaches are happy that their players are improving each week. Rowdy King blew the opposition bowlers away this week with 40 runs not out, and one of our younger players, Perry Munro made 19.

With the NQ Under 14 Championships being held in Townsville on Friday, Saturday and Sunday there were no U15 games this weekend. This was welcomed as we had 5 of our players involved in them so would have found it very difficult to field a team. Our representative players will be back next week better for their experience playing cricket at that higher level.

Going into the final round with games level, the Breakers did just that winning 4 of the 5 rubbers so take the win on the night. The Breakers are looking like they are in good form for finals contention with 3 wins from 3.

The other match was a onesided affair with Home Hill Car Wash dominating Ruddy, Tomlins and Baxter by winning almost all of the rubbers. Best players for Ruddy , Tomlins and Baxter were Lucas and Pavani who combined well to get a win. The final score was 76 – 41. There is one round of matches to go before the finals.

SATURDAY 7th November saw the Burdekin Junior Football Club hold its presentation evening at Hotel Brandon.

After a quick-fire year full of great football, players and families celebrated successes with various awards.

The U13 Panthers and U14/15 Panthers were both Premiership Winners, with the U14/15s taking out the Grand Final.

Burdekin Football Club also won the Brian Langan Trophy for 2020.

LAST GAME OF THE SEASON

Last Saturday was the last game of the Burdekin Panthers 2020 season. A season remarkable for its fixtures being shoehorned into fourteen weeks plus finals. Even so it has been a successful season for the Panthers with the 3rd Division, the Youth team and the Under 15s all winning their Grand Finals and the Burdekin Tyre Service Reserves taking out their Minor Premiership. A win against Mareeba Bulls in the North Queensland Championships would have been a great way to end the season, but it was not to be.

NQ CHAMPIONSHIPS The Burdekin Tyre Service Reserves side took on Mareeba in the North Queensland Championships held in Townsville on Saturday evening. The Burdekin started well and dominated possession and territory in the first 20 minutes. They created four clear chances but were unable to get the ball in the net no matter how hard they tried.

Mareeba weathered the pressure and began to get back into the game. They were awarded a penalty in the 30th minute after their player was

brought down inside the box. They converted and led 1-0. The Panthers continued to push forward and were awarded a penalty in the 35th minute when Adrian Saunders was fouled in the penalty area. Antony Castiglione successfully converted the spot kick to level the scores. Just before half time Mareeba took the lead again when they broke through the Burdekin defence to score in the 43rd minute.

The second half started positively for the Burdekin when they levelled the scores at 2-2 thanks to a determined run and a fine goal from Ryan Scodellaro. Mareeba were more aggressive in the second half and started to assert their dominance in the mid-field. The Panthers held their line and were countering their opposition only to see Mareeba score a third goal due to a very dubious on-side call. The goal stood and Mareeba led 3-2 in the 73rd minute.

With time running out the Burdekin threw everything into the final 15 minutes looking for an equaliser. Both teams fought hard and the referee was kept busy and ended up booking players from both teams. The Panthers were pushing hard looking for the equaliser but as fate had it, Mareeba scored a fourth goal in the

Another big week for the Burdekin Panthers, as the competitive season comes to an end.

85th minute to lead 4-2. The Burdekin continued to try hard in the remaining minutes but ended up with 10 men due to a player being sent off in the dying minutes.

Mareeba ran out winners 4-2 but the Burdekin team can hold their heads high as they tried hard and didn’t give up. The Mareeba captain paid the Burdekin team a compliment when he said that this was the toughest game that his team had played this year.

PANTHERS PRESENTATIONS The Panthers Presentation Night is at Populin’s Hall this Saturday Night and should be a successful night with all six senior teams involved.

NIGHT SOCCER The 42nd Season of Delta cleaners Night Soccer is now into Week 8 and the second of the six graded rounds. After those have been played the semi-finals will be played on 8th December and the Grand Finals will be held on Friday 11 December.

North Australian SLS Championships

JUNIOR SOCCER AWARDS

THE North Australian Championships are held in Mackay each year at the end of October, and this year it was the 30th year of North Aussies and there was a great turn out of numbers.

Clubs travel from as far North as Port Douglas and South to Hervey Bay and it’s a chance for North Queensland, North Barrier and Wide Bay Branches to compete against each other.

This year Ayr had 8 competitors who travelled early on Friday 30th October to compete in the Pool Rescue competition and another 5 joined them at the beach on the weekend.

only completing a couple of weeks of specialised training and we still came away with some great results. Jedd Giddy recieved a 3rd in Under 12s 50m brick carry event and a 2nd in Under 12s 100m obstacle swim. Luke Hisatake came away with an 8th in U13 50m brick carry & 8th in U13 100m obstacle swim.

Jedd and Luke were 5th in the U13 100m patient tow.

Ben Hisatake came away with a 4th in U15 100m obstacle swim.

The beach and surf action also gave our club colours some amazing personal results, and a 5th in overall handicap for our Club. We also got to see the most impressive display of

sportsmanship between our big boys in the final of U15 flags.

From this carnival competitors in the Under 13 to Under 17 age groups have the ability to be selected to be a part of the Queensland Country Team that travels to the Gold Coast at the end of November. We had 3 competitors, Bailey Parker (U17 Beach), Ben Hisatake (U15 Beach) and Austin Dewar (U15 Beach Reserve) be selected in the Queensland Country Team.

The participating kids and parents all had a great weekend and are looking forward to Branch Championships in December in Sarina.

Skiers snap up in Croc Run Hayden Menso

THE annual slalom water ski event was held by the Townsville Waterski Club on the weekend, attracting 69 competitors from along the east coast.

The highly contested event offered excellent prize money and merchandise packs.

Three rounds of slalom determined the top eight skiers who would compete in the final event, the ‘Croc Run.’ This year’s conditions were challenging; however, Lower Burdekin Ski Club member Isaac McNee secured a spot in the top eight, making him the only North Queenslander in the final.

Although not coming home with the cash, he was stoked to have made the final – scoring 1/2 @14m @58k.

The winners were Pete Coranale (Brisbane/Aust O35 Champion) 5@11, Steven Moss (Cairns) 31/4@12, and 3rd Brad Williams (Toowoomba) 3@12.
