And they have made their way across the world with her customers.

Carolyn’s love of pottery even got her through a debilitating run-in with breast cancer in 1999.

“In between treatment, I had chemo, and I said ‘I’ve got to go home and make pots for my exhibition,’” says Carolyn.

“Pottery’s been a bit of a saviour for me. When things go wrong, you need

something to occupy your mind.”

Now, after thirty-three years, Carolyn is ready to step down from her role as President but will continue to be an active member of the club.

“I’m happy to give it up now, I think I’ve done my bit,” she says of her role as President.

“It feels like the end of an era for me.”

After thirty-three years as club President, a founding member of the Burdekin Potters Inc, Carolyn Starkey is passing the ceramic torch.

WHEN 73-year-old Carolyn Starkey reluctantly joined her sister for pottery classes 49 years ago, she had no idea it would ignite a life long passion for the craft.

First gathering a group of potters in 1975 for casual classes, she’s proud of how the group has grown, from humble beginnings to a well equipped and active club, located at Plantation Park.

“I was hooked,” says Carolyn.

“It sort of grew from there, we mainly did hand building, but I wanted to learn how to use a wheel.

“We had an old wheel that a man had made out of an old wringer washing machine.

There was another chap, and we were sort of teaching ourselves,” she says.

A stay at home mum, Carolyn eventually bought herself a potters wheel, spending her days creating pottery and looking after her two children.

“My son at the time was one, and he would stand on the wheel, the clay would go up the wall,” she says.

As the number of interested potters in her group expanded, Carolyn orchestrated the Ayr State High School’s use, facilitating pottery classes and workshops.

“We knew we needed to form our own group because we were getting a lot more people coming. We moved to the high school and formed a club that was then called the Ayr District Potters.”

“I used to be there until 10 pm at that stage. We could use the kiln at the high school,” Carolyn says.

In the 70s, the 20 club members banded together to build their own brick kiln from scratch and in 1979, they obtained grants and permission to build their current clubhouse, which sits adjacent to the Gudjuda Deck Cafe Plantation Park.

“I’m just proud that we’ve got this. This is special; there are not too many places that have what we’ve got here, the position we’ve got.

“To me its a special place and its been good for a lot of people over the years,” says Carolyn.

She is a passionate craftswoman and had her wares displayed at Drill Hall Gallery in Townsville.

She’s undertaken the Signature Ceramics Course, an intensive three-year pottery curriculum. She has expanded her craftsmanship to include ceramic jewellery

STRANDED with no way home, it seemed like a never-ending battle to get a young local couple back into Australia last year.

Former Ayr resident Conor Boulter and his now-wife Vitoria were two of many Australians caught in the struggle to come back home from overseas during the height of the Coronavirus pandemic and border closures in 2020.

Melissa Boulter, Conor’s mother, has shared her story on the process involved in getting her loved ones back from Brazil and of the help that is available for other families that need similar assistance.

“They went over to go to a wedding, and they were only supposed to be gone for three weeks,” Melissa said.

This was in March 2020, with the declaration of a pandemic occurring while they were overseas.

Immediately, flights were cancelled, and borders were slammed shut, causing significant stress for the young couple.

“They lost their jobs, and their home in the end because they didn’t know when they were going to get back, and the lease was up for renewal. They exhausted all of their savings, and then we [as parents] helped out after that, the poor kids,” she said.

“It was just a really tough time.”

An unexpected discovery online led to a glimmer of hope.

“Conor joined this group on Facebook, Aussie ex-pats trying to get home or the like.

An Ayr mother has shared her story of bringing her son home from overseas during the pandemic, and that assistance is available when you need it.

Chamber’s Top Award

The Ayr Chamber of Commerce won the Local Chamber of the Year Award for 2020.

Presented by GlueUp, the award recognises the Chamber’s efforts to keep local businesses thriving by introducing the Burdekin Rewards program in September 2020. The Awards cover the Asia-Pacific region, and Ayr was the only Australian Chamber to receive an award.

He saw that there were girls in New Zealand from ExTravel; they’d found a commercial flight that was going from Santiago to Australia that was going to come across empty. They were coming here to pick up the Argentinian Rugby Team.”

A push for action finally filled the plane with Aussies needing to come home.

“The government wouldn’t decide to put anyone on there. These girls from NZ absolutely hammered them; they started with 60 people, and they got up to 80 people on that flight.”

But in the meantime, Melissa sought the assistance of local parliamentarians in an attempt to bring her two loved ones back home.

After a chance meeting with Member for Burdekin, Dale Last, up Queen Street, it was then that a glimmer of hope began to shine.

“He said, ‘email me everything.’”

“So I did, and Dale just got right onto it. Then I got some templated response from the Federal Government; so I sent that to Dale, and I said ‘this is a bit disappointing,’ and he said ‘absolutely, leave it with me.’”

Melissa said Mr Last then also involved Queensland Senator Susan McDonald, and the pair joined the fight to bring the Burdekin travellers back.

“This must have been all happening in the background, while the girls from New Zealand were doing their thing. So, I’m sure that’s how Conor got on that flight,” Mel said.

The assistance from Mr Last and Ms McDonald’s offices proved invaluable, with Melissa describing them as “beautiful people” to help her.

“I couldn’t thank them enough. Thanks to Dale, who’s definitely for the people, and these girls, we got him home.”

“I just can’t believe that he wanted to take it on. I’d been so disillusioned with everything, and the fact he actually took it on made me get a little bit of hope. Prior to that, I couldn’t see any hope or silver lining. But once he was involved, I knew that something was going to happen.”

Another level of complexity was that Conor’s partner at the time, Vitoria, was not an Australian citizen, and the rules stated only citizens could return through the borders.

“Even though she had a visa, it wasn’t the visa that they wanted. So, they had to get married so she could get back in the country as a dependent,” Melissa said.

“It didn’t worry me that had to happen, but part of the reason why he went over there was to ask Vitoria to marry him anyway. They were getting married this year [in 2021], so they just brought

it forward. I understood the reasoning behind it; we just wanted them home, I didn’t care how.” The pair finally returned to Australia on December 5th, 2020, after a rather extended three-week trip.

“They did their two weeks quarantine, which was fine.

And they were lucky enough because they’d had all the flights cancelled before July, they got their quarantine for free,” Melissa said.

The family’s story highlights that anyone in the community can be affected by the situation, but there is help available when needed.

“You can’t help but feel for everybody involved. You’ve just got to be mindful. I’ve certainly learned the art of patience,” Melissa said.

Conor and Vitoria are now back living in Melbourne, glad to be back in a routine and on home soil.

A Wet Month

BACK bigger and better than ever, the North Queensland Fasttrack Talent Showcase is making a comeback next month.

Cancelled only days out from hitting the stage last year, the event’s return promises some big-name guests and plenty of spectacular talent to wow the crowd.

The talent showcase, hosted by the Burdekin Shire Youth Council and Yoyo Music, invites performers from all genres across the North to enter for a chance to win over $5,000 in cash and prizes.

Being held on Saturday 20th March, the all-day showcase will play out over three heats before the finalists take the Burdekin Theatre stage that night.

With three minutes on the clock to blow the judges away, it’s up to the performer

what they bring to the stage – singing, acrobatics, comedy, musical theatre, or even bringing on the band.

Funded through Arts Queensland and a host of local sponsors, the event is open to anyone of all ages across the region and is set to be the biggest yet.

This year’s special guest to the showcase is Jack Vidgen, former contestant on The Voice and more recently fresh out of the jungle in I’m A Celebrity Get Me Out of Here.

Plus, Maddie Rowe from Hit 103.1 radio and Genes Music will also be judging the finals.

Entrants will be treated to a special mentoring session on Friday night, with Jack and the Yoyo Music management team, helping them hone in on their talents before the showcase on Saturday.

The 2020 event was set to have a record 58 entrants, and it is hoped that anyone wishing to showcase their talent get in and apply before

spots run out.

Burdekin Shire Council Mayor Lyn McLaughlin said it was fantastic to be welcoming the Fasttrack talent scouts back to the Burdekin.

“Fasttrack North Queensland is a fantastic opportunity for all performers to gain experience on stage and be seen by capital city talent scouts here in the Burdekin,” Cr McLaughlin said.

“We are incredibly excited to welcome contestants to the Burdekin Theatre this March for a day of performances which I am sure will be bigger and better than ever before.”

Ready to pour The Burdekin could soon have its own Taphouse after Council approved the proposal on Tuesday.

Hayden Menso THE Burdekin is renowned for its liquid gold, but there’s another of a unique kind that could soon be pouring on tap.

A proposed Taphouse will feature at the Iron Works Brewery, bringing a new look to Brandon’s former foundry site.

Operated historically as a foundry and heavy engineering works since 1906, the site’s former daily operations have included blast furnaces, sand drying, and metal fabrication while also incorporating associated crane, forklift, and heavy vehicle movements.

However, in 2016, the decision was made to diversify from the declining manufacturing industry and redevelop the foundry into a micro-brewing facility.

Those behind the brewery are looking to convert the original foundry office, adjacent to the existing brewery, into an industrialthemed venue.

There, residents and travellers will be treated to the new and long-awaited experience, giving customers the chance to try all-new craft beers brewed at the site.

Burdekin Shire Councillors and staff at this week’s general meeting discussed recommendations for the development application.

Although situated in a residential zone, it sits within a ‘low-density’ designation and found no reported concerns from the public during the notification stage.

Councillors carried the motion without any objections, giving the project the go-ahead.

Founding members wanted for two new Advisory Groups Burdekin Shire Council is seeking expressions of interest for members of the newly-formed Burdekin Cultural and Community Development Advisory Groups, with applications open from this Friday, 5 February.

Both groups had their charters adopted by Council at a recent meeting, with an aim to provide specific consultative outlets for the implementation of Council’s strategies.

Burdekin Shire Council Mayor Lyn McLaughlin encouraged all those with

an interest in community development or members of the arts and culture sectors to apply.

“The major benefit of Advisory Groups is they are able to provide ongoing advice and support guiding Council in the development of strategies in the groups’ areas of expertise. This is a fantastic time to be involved in the discussions, with a Youth Strategy and an Arts and Cultural Strategy in the planning stages,” Cr McLaughlin said.

“The Community Development Advisory Group

will seek to assist Council in the implementation of community development strategies, which in turn will increase social and wellbeing opportunities in the Shire.

“The Burdekin Cultural Advisory Group aims to bring together representatives from the Shire’s diverse arts and cultural community, potentially increasing participation in cultural activities and improving access for all members of the community.

“These are fantastic opportunities for Burdekin residents to be a part of

Youth Offender Laws After outcries from the public following recent incidences across Queensland, Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk has announced new bail laws for repeat offenders. Courts will get more powers to fit electronic monitoring bracelets on repeat youth, create a presumption against bail, and strengthen existing laws to provide greater guidance.

Anti-hooning laws are to be strengthened, and a parliamentary inquiry is set to examine the use of remote engine immobilisers.

Roads Survey Open The state’s peak motoring body, RACQ, is calling for motorists to nominate the most congested roads in their area. The Red Spot Congestion survey allows the group to highlight which areas, streets and roads require essential upgrades to local and state governments. Community Grants Success The Burdekin has received a recent boost of almost half a million dollars in community grants across the Burdekin electorate.

Conley Street Drainage Tender has been awarded for drainage improvements on Conley Street in Ayr to begin in the near future.

An additional $118,000 in funding from Burdekin Shire Council has been allocated to the works, the cost offset from underbudget projects across the shire, now worth $588,000.

Choppers Inspecting Clare, Milaroo and Osborne residents are advised that routine inspections of powerlines continue until the end of March. Low-flying helicopters will be in the area, operated by Powerlink Queensland, to ensure a safe and reliable transmission network.

Justin Minuti Hayden Menso LIVING on the land all of his life, taking the step into agribusiness was a natural one for Justin Minuti.

Born and bred on his families’ farms in Brandon, Justin grew up around tractors and cane harvesters, with his parents, grandparents, and brother all being part of the agricultural industry.

“I always knew it was something I wanted to be involved in,” Justin said.

“Not that I didn’t like to get my hands dirty, but numbers

always interested me.

“So, when I had an opportunity to go into a parts apprenticeship at AgNorth, instead of doing grade 12 at Burdekin Catholic High School, I took that, and spent nearly four years there.”

After that time, Justin moved to Tracpower in Brandon as Parts Manager, filling the role for around six years.

“Then when the opportunity arose to come on board and buy into this business, I could not let that opportunity pass,” he said.

Married to his wife of

four years, Emma, they also celebrated the arrival of their first son, Archie, making 2020 “a very big year” for Justin.

He has recently celebrated one year of business ownership, meaning he is living out his dream of combining industry and agriculture.

“Growing up in the Burdekin, you’re always on the farm and driving four-wheelers and buggies, and driving tractors for the old man. Even when I was three years old, I was going in the harvester with him.

I’ve always been around

the machinery; it’s always something I wanted to do.

He said the Burdekin community’s support structure had been a significant factor in his move to buy into the business and stay local.

“Everybody’s really friendly; I get along with just about everyone. Everyone always says g’day, even when you’re walking up the street.

Nine times out of ten, people are there to give you a hand when needed, and I like to try and repay that favour as well.”

“I just like the tight-knit community feeling that you

don’t get in the cities,” he said.

The business partnership between David Simmonds and father-in-law Steve Cockfield, Justin said that the first year of ownership had been a big learning curve.

“I thought I had a lot of responsibilities when I was Parts Manager; being a Dealer-Principal ups the ante,” he said.

“But I love it and wouldn’t change it for the world. It’s very rewarding, getting to see the different side of the business, and seeing different sides of people.”

Having the ability to support our local farming community through sales and service proves gratifying.

“People look at you differently and want you to do more for them, and you do want to do more for them.

That’s really what I like about it,” Justin said.

“I want to help the customers and the community as much as I can, and it was something that I’ve wanted to do for a really long time.”

National recognition for top Groper Creek spot Hayden Menso SHOWCASING one of the serene locations of the Burdekin, the work of a dedicated couple from Groper Creek has been recognised on a national level.

The Groper Creek Caravan Park has been nominated as a finalist in the Grey Nomad Awards for 2020, shortlisted in the 2020 Best Grey Nomad Small Caravan Park category.

Manager Jeanette Garvey said the recognition was unexpected but humbly appreciated.

“We’re pretty chuffed as we’ve made numerous improvements at the park since taking over in October 2019 and have had fabulous feedback, particularly from our grey nomads,” she said.

“Repeat nomads are our greatest word of mouth.”

Improvements include upgrades to the amenities block, fishing facilities, and overall cleanliness since

taking on the park, thanks to grants and assistance from the local council.

“2020 was our first tourist season, and of course, COVID impacted our business hard during travel bans; then we also were impacted by flooding. Just making the finals is a proud achievement for the Home Hill Boat Club.”

The Grey Nomad Awards described the park as the “Undiscovered Karumba” and “Kakadu of the North” for its facilities on offer and spectacular location right by the Burdekin River.

The nomination came from a surprise visit from the awards judges last year, who were impressed with the quality of their stay at Groper Creek.

“It also places the Burdekin under the national tourism spotlight, enticing travellers to holiday here in our piece of paradise,” Ms Garvey said.

Awards Director, Kim Morgan, said the Grey Nomad Awards provide vital, credible

information to mature-age travellers while supporting positive aging through soft adventure and social inclusion.

Judges of the award said the park’s offerings for travellers and nomads were worthy of the recognition.

“This caravan park offers a truly unique blend of practical facilities that are also flexible enough to cater for fisherfolk, welcoming customer service, and waterfront sites in a peaceful location that’s only 10 minutes off the national highway.”

“We’re impressed that the managers and the Home Hill Boat Club volunteers work so hard to make sure that this park is fully restored after each of Mother Nature’s flooding events – that must take spirit, fortitude, and dedication,” the judges said.

The winners of the awards will be announced on Tuesday, March 2.

A Tale Through Time Ayr local, Vincenzina Zappala, is celebrating a milestone which may just make her the Burdekin’s oldest resident.

Hayden Menso THE life of Vincenzina Zappala is undoubtedly one that is well-lived.

Born from humble beginnings in the Burdekin on February 14th, 1917, Vincenzina and her family this week are celebrating her 104th birthday – a truly remarkable achievement.

Heralding from a large family whose parents originated from Sicily, Vincenzina is described as a “very kind-hearted, generous and loving” woman, mother, grandmother, and greatgrandmother.

Unlike many of us today, having lived through tough times, it is hard work and a commitment to her family, which has crafted her incredible life up to the milestone.

Gay Lewis, Vincenzina’s daughter,

says her mother is a very strong woman, having been a hard worker all of her life.

“When younger, she used to sweep the dirt floor of the shack they lived in at the time. She and her siblings would go to school and then come home to work the farm for their father,” Gay says.

Vincenzina has some written memoirs to share, recalling what life was like in her early years.

Living upriver in her early years, Vincenzina and her seven siblings attended Osborne State School in the 1920s, walking over a mile, morning and afternoon, to school.

In those days, growing up was a more raw and straightforward experience; although her mother did not have enough money to treat the children to an ice-cream at school once a week, there was

the treat of snacking on sweet sugar cane on the walk home.

She writes, “When we could not find any sugar cane near the tramline, we would pull the cane from the cane trucks (weren’t we naughty). Those days the sugar was sweet and tender. We would chew mostly Baddilla, Clarks Seedling and EK varieties,” writes Vincenzina.

Life on the farm was quite unlike modern life many of us embrace today.

“In the planting and crushing season, May, Lucy [two of Vincenzina’s sisters], and I would strip the cane and put it in bundles, and then the men would load up the planter. We would also pick up the tops of the sugar cane and put it in bundles,” she writes.

This was still when Vincenzina was very young, the family heading

to work after school and on weekends.

Vincenzina’s marriage to Alfio Zappala of Giru took place in 1936, proving memorable for the pair.

“Father Lyons was a bit under the weather, and he wrote on our marriage certificate that I was born in 1936 and married in 1917.”

When war broke out in 1941, Italy became an enemy, and many of those living in Australia were interned; fortunately, her husband did not need to go as he was working the land, and farming was considered essential during the time.

Today, Vincenzina still lives at home with two of her children and is still as family-oriented as ever.

“She loves the kids, her grandkids and great-grandkids. When we go there, she’s always happy to see us, but when the great-grandkids come in, her face just lights up. She gets so excited; they’re just her joy,” Gay says.

With four children, three grandchildren, and six greatgrandchildren, family values have played a significant part in Vincenzina’s life.

Gay recalls her mother’s strong connection with grandchildren as her family grew.

“When my daughter, Janai, had her first son Jayden, mum would have been 87 at the time. Janai had to go back to work, and mum insisted that she look after him.

“I’ll look after him, and I will have him as long as I can.” And that she did.

So, for the following 18 months, she raised Jayden in his formative years, a unique experience for the great-grandmother.

“She doted on him. I think that gave her a real lease of life; she had something to look forward to every day. It made her feel so much younger,” Gay said.

The family is celebrating the last 104 years, an effort of tireless work for others, and an endearing love for her family.

“We’re very lucky and blessed that she’s still as she is and that we still have her. For mum to still be here at 104 totally amazes us,” Gay says.

“She’s such a kind, beautiful soul, not just because she’s our mum.

She doesn’t have a bad word to say about anyone and even finds good in people that others may have a problem with.”

It is Vincenzina’s nature to be on the lookout for others around her.

“She would go out of her way to help her brothers, sisters, inlaws, and she was always there for everyone.”

A firm believer in prayer, Vincenzina would always take the time to pray for those in need or sickness, whether she knew them or not.

“She was a great believer in prayer and would say up to five Rosaries every day for her family and others”, Gay said.

“She would not go to bed until they were all said, for many years.”

“Even she says now, “Am I really 104?”

Julie: We were in Ayr shopping, and my partner said ‘you wait in the car, I have something to do’. Next minute he surprised me with a lovely vase and artificial flowers.

He also bought me a lovely ring on our third anniversary. Billy: When we went to Proud’s in Cannonvale, and she bought me a nice dress ring. The secret to maintaining a healthy relationship? Julie: I believe in any relationship communication plays a big factor. When life throws you lemons, turn it into lemonade. Billy: To be open and honest with each other and no secrets. Are you celebrating/ thoughts on Valentine’s Day? Julie: Yes we are celebrating, we are going up to Rollingstone for the weekend.

Billy: We are going to Rollingstone for Valentine’s day, and we are taking our Black Series Camper which we bought last year.

It will be our maiden voyage in it.

Darcy: We don’t usually celebrate Valentine’s Day, we are not big on the whole flowers and chocolate thing! This year we will both be working. New vehicle technology like engine immobilisers are making cars more thief-proof than ever.

Protecting your car from thieves Marina Trajkovich TOWNSVILLE was dubbed the third worst place for car theft in Queensland in 2018, with a significant spike in vehicle robberies making headlines in recent weeks.

While the Burdekin is less of a hot spot for car-related theft, there are several ways you can secure your set of wheels.

New technologies like the Ghost Immobiliser are becoming increasingly popular, using softwarebased technology that will allow only you to start the vehicle’s engine.

The Ghost works by syncing with your vehicle, allowing the original buttons in your car, like on the dashboard or steering wheel to be programmed with a pin.

The Ghost Immobiliser will prevent the engine’s starting unless the unique, user defined PIN code has been entered first.

The device protects from key cloning, theft and system hacking in what it claims to be the most secure immobiliser on the market.

And if you’re prone to forgetting your pin, each device installation has its own unique reset code, which you can activate at any time.

WHEEL LOCKS While most new cars are inbuilt with security to deter modern thieves, there are other steps you can take as extra precautions.

Steering or wheel locks can be implemented as a physical and visual deterrent to car thieves. Anybody who sees the immobilising contraption will know that the vehicle will require extra effort to obtain.

The downside to this deterrent is the necessity to attach the physical device when you leave the vehicle.

However, it’s a relatively inexpensive option.

ALARMS Car alarms are a good option as unlike mechanical wheel locks, do not alter the car’s appearance and let off a loud noise.

The alarm alerts you to anything happening and is disconcerting for thieves trying to make a quick escape.

2. When parked, never leave your keys in the car. Close all the windows and the sunroof.

3. Never leave your car running and unattended.

4. Avoid leaving valuables inside your vehicle where passersby can see them.

TRACKING TECHNOLOGY If you are unlucky and your car is stolen, trackers can help you locate the vehicle, proving very effective in tracing the car and returning it to its owner.

I remember the little shops over the road from where the Ayr Railway Station was then. We (our family from Airdale/Airville) spent many hours there waiting for troop trains (always arriving late) to meet my two brothers coming home on leave. Bill was AIF, Wal RAAF. Bill, aged 99, is still with us and lives at a retirement home in Nambour. He was wounded in New Guinea.

P.S. Airdale had plenty of students but a shortage of teachers in WWII so Mr Neville Searle had to crowd us all in one room to teach all classes.

WHEN Kevin Chun Tie’s grandfather ‘Chun Tie,’ arrived in Australia, immigrating from Guangzhou, China in 1897, Ayr was merely 15 years old.

He had already lived an incredible life, running a business in Darwin that saw him on a long-distance commute – making numerous six-month return journeys by steamship between the Northern Territory and Hong Kong, selling Chinese products to miners in the Top End. The Australian Gold Rush was in full swing, inviting opportunistic migrants from all over the world.

Three generations later, 66-year-old photographer Kevin has little memory of his grandfather, but still holds his original immigration papers, and has immersed himself in discovering his family’s history.

“You used to need a dictation test to re-enter Australia in those days,” Kevin said.

“I think my grandfather got around that by making a trade deal.”

Chun Tie and his wife Qui Fa then moved to Croyden, where they had ten children.

Two of their eight sons made the move to the Burdekin to start their businesses, Kevin’s father Charlie Tie and Uncle Tommy Tie. Now living in Townsville, Kevin’s family is one of the oldest tracing lineage back to Ayr, and some of the town’s first Chinese migrants.

“There wasn’t really a Chinese community at that time; it was just us, that was it.

“It was pretty different, being around a largely Italian community,” says Kevin.

His father, Charlie Chun Tie soon became a prominent figure in Home Hill, his convenience store and Chinese takeaway restaurant, Shanghai Cafe, the first of its kind in the area.

“We used to have stone fruits, a lolly counter; you name it we’ve got it. The old cafe was long and narrow and in one corner we had a pinball machine and a jukebox.

“We would sell Australian meals and Chinese meals. People used to come over from Ayr to get our meals,” says Kevin.

He reflects on working hard in the shop all day with his two brothers, between school and homework.

“Most of the time, we just lived at the shop. We would go home to sleep, which was just a shed,” says Kevin.

“Dad and I chopped wood for the woodstove, fed the 40 plus chooks and ducks, collected fresh eggs. There were no frozen chickens to barbecue then,” says Kevin.

His Uncle Tommy also became a well-known figure in Ayr, running ‘Tommy Tie’s convenience store on the corner of Graham and Edwards Street.

“We were very enterprising our family, always businessoriented. My uncle set up the first shop opposite the railway station. It was open for the mill workers from early hours to late at night.”

“He ran the store for 60 years and was quite a character in town,” says Kevin.

“Tommy Tie had a charitable nature and did many acts of kindness to those he knew to be in needy circumstances.”

Tommy Tie Park on Graham Street was named after Uncle Tommy by the Rotary Club of Ayr, of which he was a prominent member.

Tommy’s wife, Ruby Ah Moon, was from another Chinese family in town.

“Her family ran another store, she used to serve all the American troops drinks and sandwiches when the war was on,” says Kevin.

Their house, named Thruby sat across from the shop and is still visible to passerby in Ayr. Tommy and Ruby’s son’s Cha rles and Morris also became well-known figures.

Charles became a popular radio announcer for local station 4SB in Kingaroy, Queensland, while Morris was an aircraft mechanic who worked between Papua New Guinea and England before meeting a tragic end.

“He actually crashed into Mount Spec up here; there was a big search for him; it was. Uncle Tommy was going to pick him up, and he never made it,” says Kevin.

“The two daughters Dulcie and Daphne never married; they worked at the shop in Ayr all those years.”

Kevin, now based in Townsville, is rightly proud of his heritage, and of the tremendous efforts his family put in to settling in their new country. Many of the family documents are now housed in the Townsville museum on Banneker Street.

Ravenswood Gold Mine

Ravenswood and Royal Flying Doctors Service Local Hero 2020 Awardee, Greg Clark tells it like it is.

doctors found a tumour on her neck. She credits Mr Clark with saving her life.

“It turned out that she had a type of cancer and if she’d have left it much longer it could have easily taken her life,” says Mr Clark.

“This particular one was an incidental thing that I’d picked up. I think that’s why I got into the job and why I enjoy the job because you can make a difference,” he says.

He says that the rapport gained with the Ravenswood community is one of the many reasons he loves his job, which regularly throws him into challenging situations caring for injured workers of the mine.

Previously in the army and then running a motel in Injune, Queensland, Mr Clark was looking for volunteer opportunities to help his community when he became involved with the Queensland Ambulance Service.

“What initially drew me to the profession, I wanted to do some community service. The fireys and SES had quite a few

He’s recently been acknowledged for his service in the community in the RFDS Local Hero Awards, representing the Townsville region in 2020.

“I was nominated by a young lady, I had noticed that she had some swelling to her throat area and I asked her if she’d noticed it before,” says Mr Clark.

“She thought that she was just gaining a bit of weight and I said ‘look; you need to go see your doctor and get it checked.’”

The woman, Alisa Wilkinson, was then diagnosed with cancer after

people, but the ambulance service didn’t,” says Mr Clark.

“While I was in the army, I had been a stretcher-bearer, so I started off as an honorary ambulance officer and then became a paramedic with the Queensland Ambulance Service. That took me all over the state,” he says.

“It’s the investigative side, working out what’s happening and then you have the interpersonal side as well, helping people out when they’re maybe in an unusual situation,” he says.

Although he is grateful for the recognition and proud to have received the 2020 Local Hero Award, he modestly shrugs it off, saying that his work in Ravenswood is a team effort.

“I really am chuffed,” he says.

“It’s certainly nice for someone to say, look you’re doing a good job, but it’s certainly not just me.

“There are other people who deserve recognition in Ravenswood. They do a lot of things in austere conditions; they don’t have a doctor available every day of the week or a chemist just next to them, so it’s about those people.

“It’s the guys who clean the ambulance station prior to RFDS coming in, the people who hold the key to the ambulance station and do security, the other nurses who are here and the members of the community

In this series, we’ll take you into the saloons and behind the bars of some of the Burdekin’s much-loved watering holes, to meet the landlords, the locals and to discover what makes our pubs great.

Clare Sports & Recreation Club, Clare

In the farming community of Clare, the local club is a go-to for fish and chips on a Wednesday, a round of Find the Joker on a Friday or a cold beer served by the clubs friendly international staff.

Marina Trajkovich ANNA Booth had been visiting the Clare Sports and Recreation Club with her family since she was five years old.

Now, the Secretary of the Club Committee and Manager of the hospitality venue has a much bigger role, with her family, coming into their fourth generation of Clare farmers supporting her along the way.

“What I do is all voluntary,” says Anna.

“I just do it for the community and I’ve tried to build it up. I didn’t want to see it close,” she says.

The watering hole is a favourite amongst the farming community of Clare, with regulars gathering to enjoy a beer on tap, a game of pool or dinner with the family.

Anna says she took on the role of running the Club to ensure its continuation for the locals of Clare, who have been visiting the venue since its first opening in 1967.

The club has been built up over the years, requiring a complete rebuild after Cyclone Aivu decimated the entire building in 1989.

“The original was completely destroyed and this part here was rebuilt,” says Anna.

The venue has become popular for its Friday night meat raffles and Joker board, where members of the club can try their luck at selecting the Joker from a deck of cards,

displayed face down on the wall.

Every week that Find the Joker isn’t selected, the prize draw increases, with one lucky winner recently taking home a prize of $860.

The club is also heavily involved in community sport, hosting the annual Cricket Carnival for the past twenty years.

“The whole committee get’s involved with that,” says Anna.

Another community event is the bi-annual ‘Bores and Barra’ Competition, where contestants bring in their prize catches for judging.

“It’s a fundraiser and all the money goes to the primary school,” says Anna.

Giving new energy to the club are the people who work there, often international travellers who work the bar between doing their farm work.

Jess Quirke from Leeds, England has become a part of the Clare community, getting to know the people who frequent the Club between planting watermelon over the last six months.

“Nice locals, it’s nice to meet new people as well, working for Anna is great,” she says.

“There’s always a story to be heard,” says Jess.

Another employee, who has been working in Clare for eleven months is Thibaut Strasman, from the small town of Montargis in France.

He has been helping out in the kitchen of the club two

nights a week and says that he loves being a part of the tightknit farming community.

When he’s not doing the rounds in the kitchen he’s picking zucchinis on a local farm or fishing in the Burdekin River.

“It’s really good actually, it’s nice because it’s a small town.

Especially after a few months, you start to know everybody,” says Thibaut.

“The local people are nice, I’m not very into big cities, I like to enjoy nature as well,” he says.

Locals from the area sit around the bar, served by Jess.

Among them are ‘Butcher Luke,’ who comes to the club most days for a Great Northern, and Gail Unwin, who has recently moved to Clare, visited by her friends from Brisbane and Gladstone.

“It’s lovely here, it’s great.

We all love it,” says Gail.

NEW YEAR, NEW PRINCIPAL St Francis Primary School has welcomed a new principal through its doors, bringing her previous experience in Catholic education to kickstart the new year.

Hayden Menso THERE is a new face behind the principal’s desk at St Francis Primary School, as Amanda Jones settles into the role and begins to call the Burdekin home.

Making a move from St Joseph’s on the Strand in Townsville, Mrs Jones is bringing her previous teaching and principalship to the Burdekin for the first time.

“I was the Assistant Principal in RE for the past three years,” she said.

“Prior to that, I’d been teaching at Ryan Catholic College, but I’ve taught for the past twenty years across schools in both Townsville and Brisbane.”

With experience in early learning, the school’s new contingency of Prep students is in safe hands.

“I was the first kindergarten teacher for the Townsville Diocese, so that was an interesting experience getting that up and running and off

the ground.”

With her husband serving in the army, the back and forth between Brisbane and the garrison city of Townsville brought many opportunities for Amanda, including moving to Ayr. “It was an opportunity that doesn’t come up every day,” Mrs Jones said.

“The idea of still being close to Townsville but getting to have my own school and work with a different group of people and kids and families was a wonderful opportunity,” she said.

The move from the city to our community has been a positive one, the Burdekin showcasing its offerings to the new residents.

“It is a big decision to move, but I’ve been here for just over a month now, and it’s been fantastic.”

With the new year now in full swing, the focus has been on getting all students settled and ready for a solid year of learning ahead.

“At the moment for us, it’s

getting everyone started and hopefully having a better year than everyone had last year.”

Mrs Jones said she looks forward to bringing a new element of engagement to the school in 2021.

“It’s connecting with families and the community and making sure that our school is really familyoriented. That parents and grandparents are volunteering and that we’re all working together in partnership for the good of the kids.”

Mrs Jones, along with some newly renovated classrooms, will be pulling focus on learning and engagement moving through the year.

“The big thing for me is about the community and developing that love of learning within the kids.

With the new buildings, we’ve got wonderful things happening, particularly in our Prep to Grade 2 areas, where they’re working as a whole team; and each of our year levels is developing what we

call a professional learning community.”

The community approach will see students combine with others on their learning journey and engage with other teachers in the classroom.

“Classes work together, so kids have lots of great opportunities to work across levels and across teachers, and people are working as part of a team; that’s a really big focus for us, developing those learning communities within the staff to benefit the kids.”

Mrs Jones said she is looking forward to being part of both the school and the wider Burdekin community.

“It’s been a wonderful four weeks so far that I’ve been here, and I’ve felt very welcomed to the community,” she said.

“Everyone’s been super supportive and very welcoming. The staff are amazing, the kids are incredible, and so are the families.”

MORE Burdekin students are swapping their pencils and rulers for hairdryers and screwdrivers with the school year back in full force, starting their dream careers early through TAFE Queensland and the TAFE at School program.

With trades skills and services in high demand across the region, it’s no wonder more local teenagers are equipping themselves for what lies ahead in the workforce after school.

The TAFE Burdekin campus in Home Hill has experienced a 30 percent increase in TAFE at School enrolments in 2021 compared to 2020, with the organisation adding an extra training day to the schedule

this year to accommodate the growth.

TAFE Queensland General Manager (North Region) Tim Campbell said the interest in trades is growing on a local level.

“Students participating in TAFE at School at TAFE Queensland’s Burdekin campus are studying a Certificate II in Automotive Vocational Preparation, a Certificate II in Engineering Pathways, or a Certificate II in Salon Assistant.”

“Delivering these courses is in line with the Australian Government’s National Skills Needs List, which highlights the demand for motor mechanics, hairdressers, metal fabricators, and fitters and turners – just to name a few,” Mr Campbell said.

Participating in the TAFE at School program generally involves students studying a trade qualification to visit the TAFE campus one day per week and learn about their interested trade, giving students a head start to complete a nationally recognised certificate qualification while also finishing their high school studies.

“This program provides students with job-ready skills in their industry of choice, making them ready for the workforce when they graduate or ready for further studies or even an apprenticeship,” Mr Campbell said.

Racing with purpose This Ovarian Cancer Awareness Month, Ovarian Cancer Australia Ambassador, motivational speaker, international marathon runner and author Heather Hawkins shares her story.

Marina Trajkovich FOR many, a fiftieth birthday and 25th wedding anniversary are reason enough for lavish celebrations.

For 55-year-old Heather Hawkins, these co-occurring occasions were instead spent running across the North Pole in sub-zero temperatures, a proud milestone she says felt surreal as she crossed the ice.

“That was just the most amazing, wonderful, tough as anything race to do, it was - 41 degrees at one stage and quite surreal to be running up there at the top of the world,” says Heather.

“I still get quite emotional about it because just eight years prior, there I was in my hospital bed not knowing if I was going to survive,” she says.

The motivational speaker, author and mother of two from Sydney has been an avid marathon runner since 2012 after a battle with ovarian cancer changed her perspective on life forever.

“It was the most phenomenal experience, something I couldn’t really prepare for. For me, it was a celebration of life that I had my health,” she says of the North Pole marathon, where she placed first in the female division.

After experiencing a constant swelling in her abdomen and feelings of fatigue, Heather was diagnosed with stage one ovarian cancer by her doctor, early detection that saved her life.

“Your world just completely stands still, and at 41 you really don’t expect to be faced with the prospect that you’re not going to be here in a few years,” says Heather.

“As a parent, you’re not going to see your children grow up. All these questions come flooding. It was a very dramatic shift in my life,” she says.

“I am one of the fortunate ones; it was found early enough that it hadn’t spread and that gave me the best chance of survival.

Not a day goes by where I don’t think of how fortunate I am.”

Heather signed up for her first competitive,

4km run with her kids, not knowing it would set a course that would change her life.

“For me, it was a real game-changer. I thought it was a great opportunity to get fit and to live life more fully.

“I had never run four km in my life, and all I had was my old gardening shorts, my old runners and two weeks to train at the park,” says Heather.

Now, an avid marathon runner, her love of running has taken her all over the world, winning internationally acclaimed races while raising money for Ovarian Cancer Australia.

Orchestrating a five-month trek through the Himalayas with her family, she raised over 35,000 dollars for cancer research.

She’s run across the Sahara in the blistering heat during a multi-day marathon stint in Morocco and competed in the World Marathon Challenge, competing in seven marathons, across seven continents in seven days.

“I think I got a bit braver by going through ovarian cancer,” she says.

She is extremely vocal as a cancer survivor, using her position as ambassador for Ovarian Cancer Australia to raise awareness about the disease.

With no early detection test, she encourages women to know the signs and symptoms that could indicate ovarian cancer, signs like abnormal abdominal bloating and pain, fatigue, changes in appetite and bleeding between periods.

“Four Australian women are diagnosed a day and three pass away every day from ovarian cancer. That statistic is devastating,” she says.

“My message to women and their families it to know your body and be aware that if changes are happening, don’t just brush it off, go and have a chat with your doctor.

“Even if they are just subtle symptoms go have a chat and be aware of the signs of ovarian cancer because you have nothing to lose and everything to gain.”

WALLAMAN FALLS This 268m towering beauty is situated within Girringun National Park, an hour’s drive west from Ingham. Australia’s highest, single drop waterfall is a sight not to be missed.

The easily accessible lookout is a great vantage point to bear witness to Wallaman’s thunderous roar (best heard between November to April) or to take in the tranquil

surrounds. For the more adventurous and to truly appreciate the magnitude of these falls, the steep trek to the base will leave you in awe (2hrs).

HINCHINBROOK ISLAND Exclusively National Park and fringed by the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park waters, Hinchinbrook Island remains relatively untouched.

Fresh festival comes to the North Hayden Menso THERE will be no moving and grooving this year for revellers of the festival music scene.

For the second time in two years, Groovin the Moo has been cancelled by organisers at the bite of the pandemic.

Making the announcement on Thursday, 4 February, Cattleyard Promotions said it was sad to announce the cancellation, meaning the popular music festival won’t be returning to Townsville this year.

The promoter said in a public statement, “Because of current restrictions, the uncertainty of when they’ll be eased, and the amount of time needed to plan GTM, it makes it impossible to go ahead with this tour in the way our famooly all know and love.”

Anyone who had already

purchased tickets for the event, scheduled for 2 May 2021 in Townsville, can either get them refunded or hold onto them for an anticipated 2022 return.

However, the promoter has created a brand-new festival to take GTM’s place, coming to the regions this Spring.

Fresh Produce will make its debut, set to fill a live performance void for festivalgoers.

The new festival will have limited capacities and focus on showcasing local talents on a single stage.

With the line-up and ticket details to be announced soon, the inaugural show will take the stage on Friday 13 and Saturday 14 August 2021, at the Murray Sports Complex in Townsville.

Ayr Dalbeg Road, Mount Kelly – Water Infrastructure Upgrade Works Burdekin Shire Council wishes to advise that construction works to upgrade water infrastructure along Ayr Dalbeg Road, Mount Kelly is scheduled to commence on Monday 1 March 2021, continuing until approximately Friday 2 April 2021, weather permitting.

As a result of these works, temporary traffic management controls will be in place and Council will be required to close the eastbound lane along Ayr Dalbeg Road near the intersection of Old Clare Road.

Motorists and pedestrians are asked to obey all directional signs and any instructions from onsite personnel for their own safety and the safety of Council’s workforce.

Burdekin Shire Council thanks residents, businesses and road users in anticipation of their patience during the construction period.

The winner was Brett White (23 points), second on a cut off the cards was John Reid (22 points), third was Daniel Potter (22 points).

Welcome everyone to the first table bowls notes for 2021.

Nominations are now open at the Anzac Club for the Handicap Singles. They will close this weekend, and the draw will take place on this Sunday 14th. Please check out the draw once it is up to see who you are playing and organise your game. We need a minimum of 32 players for this competition to proceed.

The association’s Annual General Meeting will be held Wednesday 3rd March 7.30pm at the Anzac Club. Can all team captains please start contacting their players to ascertain at the AGM how many teams the competition will have for 2021?

The competition would kick off approx. 18th March. Can captains also ask their players if they are prepared to play on Wednesday nights instead of Thursdays if there is a change?

Brandon Ladies Bowls Wednesday the 3rd of February 2021 was our first day back from the Christmas break, and we played no games due to the weather conditions.

We want to congratulate Joy Woods on being our new President and thank our

outgoing President Lyn Farr for all her years of being our President. Congratulations to Bev Garioch for being VicePresident and congratulating Lorraine Henderson on taking on Secretary’s role. Thank you to our past Secretary Rachel Pearce for your time. Old and new players welcome to join us for social bowls every Wednesday, names in by 1pm for a 1.30pm start.

Home Hill Junior Cricket

The Home Hill Cricket grounds were buzzing with excited young cricketers last Friday with two junior cricket games and twelve energetic Master Blasters doing skills-based games. Rowen Petersen top scored this week with 23 runs not out off only 12 balls, closely followed by Thomas Cardillo, not out, on 20. Cardillo also had fun with the ball taking three wickets for four runs and one catch. In the other game Adam Camer came out on top with the bat scoring an unbeaten 35, next was Nicholas Pengelly and Kailan Tustin both on 24, also without losing their wicket.

Not too many wickets fell in this game, and Nate Di Bartolo was the best bowler with one for six.

Clancy Colls was next best with one for 10 runs.

This week, it was a mixed bag for the Under 13 Blue and Under 15 teams competing away in the Townsville competitions. A good win for the 13s against Brothers but a disappointing loss for the 15s against Norths. Thomas Cardillo was the stand out again this week in the 13s blasting 36 not out. The next best was Jarvis Dowson, not out on 8 in Home Hill’s innings of 5 for 95. Leo Olditch and Perry Munro both snared two wickets each for four and nine runs respectively.

Catches were taken by Emily Town, Jarvis Dowson, Rowdy King and Eamon Casey. Their recent good form and wins have the Under 13s in second place on the ladder, only one win away from Wanderers who are in first position.

As previously mentioned, the U15s were playing Norths this week at Endeavour 2 in Townsville. We won the toss and elected to bat, soon both our openers were gone with only 23 runs on the board.

partnership of 46 runs, then Pengelly combined with Nate Di Bartolo for another 45.

Those two partnerships helped Pengelly top score with 34 runs, Corey Heidke was just short of this on 33. Brock Harrington played a great cameo inning of 30 runs lower down the order for us to end our 40 overs on 7 for 173.

Norths had a strong batting lineup, so we needed to take our chances to win, a dropped catch in the slips in the first over was not a good start.

We bowled quite well, but too many catches went to ground, and a lot of edges flew just out of reach, it wasn’t our day.

Brock Harrington took the most wickets but was very unlucky not to get more; he finished with two for 42. Matteo Felesina was very economical with one for six and also took one catch. Norths ended their innings on seven for 192 in a game we could have won if we took only half our missed chances.

WILDCATS MAKE IT IN MACKAY

U16 Burdekin Wildcats

Hayden Menso IT was a weekend of quickstepping action for the Under 16 Burdekin Wildcats Girls team, who tripped to Mackay for a four-game competition.

After a shaky start against Townsville Lightening, the girls put up a fight right up until the end of the game.

Townsville took out the lead, sealing the game 63 – 40.

The second game, against Mackay Comettes, was one that brought about a tough

fight from the opposition, but the Wildcats proved their strength with a stunning 72 – 28 win.

The third match, against the Cairns Corals, was a very physical game full of deliberation.

It was a close one, but the Burdekin side came to take the win 45 – 41.

The final game of the carnival was a nail-biting rematch against the Townsville Lightening.

At the final hooter, both

teams were tied 49-all.

The match went into overtime, and our Wildcats found their tenacity and level-headedness to step up their defence and offensive play.

Not succumbing to the pressure, the Burdekin Wildcats took out the win 60 - 52.

The team showcased their playing skills and was a fine representation of the Burdekin during the weekend in Mackay.

This season the Panthers have not nominated for the FFA Cup, but instead hope to arrange some friendly matches before the new season gets underway. Training is at International Park on Tuesday and Thursday evenings and all old and new players are welcome.

JUNIORS KICK OFF Burdekin Football Juniors are still busy getting organised for the new season. Teams competing in the North Queensland (Townsville) competitions will be playing their first matches on week ending 28 March. Further details can be found on the Club Facebook page.

WALKING FOR GOALS Walking Football continued on Monday and on a hot and muggy night Romeo’s Roamers sorted out the Smith Family 8-5 with the prizeless Player of the Week award going to Fiona Smith. The 2021 Eathornes Masters League will be kicking off on 22 February enabling its participants, both male and female to run around and kick something on Monday nights.

BACK on the court for the 2021 Townsville Premier League competition, the Burdekin Silverlinks are looking forward to yet another action-packed season.

The girls took to Townsville for the first game of the season on Monday 1st February, with the squad retaining much of its successful formation from last year, plus adding to its skillset.

Team Coach Cara Trindle hoped this year would be another successful one for the team.

“We’ve retained most of our team from last year, which is good. Plus, we’ve gained a new youngster from Bowen and have the return of two of our experienced defenders from a few years ago,” she said.

Two Burdekin sisters, Shelby Norris and Jacqueline Cockhill, have returned to add to the team’s defence lines “That strengthens up our defense end a bit more.

It’s nice as a coach to be able to put anyone on and know they’re going to perform well.”

The game was a close one throughout, with the final score dropping 37 – 41, with the win going to the Townsville Runaways.

“From the game last Monday night, I wasn’t too worried that we lost it. My objective was to use our rolling subs, so we could work with as many combinations of players as we could in the first game,” Ms Trindle said.

“That may have cost us the game, but that gave us a look at some really effective combos, and everyone gained some valuable court time.

“Losing by four points isn’t do or die. The girls need to not look at that as a bad loss,” she said.

Week two’s game, played on Monday 8th February, was a more settled match, with excellent passages of play from the Silverlinks against the Saints.

The SLoBs (Burdekin Ex-Players Benevolent Fund) intend to run the Eddie Escriva Cup on Saturday 20th March. This is a new carnival event and is aimed mostly at older players of all sporting codes. Rugby League, Union, Touch, Basketball and Masters have all been invited to take part and re-live past glories over a couple of beers.

In the EPL, Man City now has a five-point lead over ManU with a game in hand. Leicester has moved up to third place while Liverpool who has lost three of its last five matches drops to fourth ten points off the pace. The eight matches in the 5th Round of the FA Cup will be played this week.

COAST TOPS A LEAGUE

In Spain, Atletico could only manage a draw, but is still eight points clear of Barcelona and Real Madrid and in Italy, AC Milan stays two points clear of Inter but Juventus has moved up to third place ahead of Roma.

In Germany, in the Bundesliga, it is almost all over with Bayern still seven points clear of Leipzig with Wolfsburg moving up to in third place. Meanwhile in France, Lille and Lyon are still managing to keep PSG at bay and in third spot, with Monaco looking increasingly dangerous, in fourth place.

The A League is gradually getting all teams playing the same amount of games. At the time of writing, Central Coast is back on top of the League following a 3-2 defeat of Western Utd. Brisbane Roar who thumped Melbourne Victory 5-2, is in second place, but has two games in hand. Sydney FC is holding down third place with Perth Glory fourth.

SYDNEY STILL LEADING In the W League Sydney FC beat second placed Canberra 4-0 to retain their 100% record.

Brisbane Roar stays in third spot on ten points despite not playing. Melbourne Victory and Adelaide have the same number of points as Brisbane.

“All in all, though, I am very happy with how the team is progressing. We are right in the contest, with our two losses being by achievable margins,” Ms Trindle said.

The fourteen-week season will see the team’s strengths put to the test, with the goal of once again getting into the finals in May. “It’s full-on until then.

We’ve got a really strong team, and the expectation is to make the finals and hopefully take the grand final and bring home the premiership.”

The second Burdekin team in the competition, Silverlinks 2, will start their matches in the coming weeks.

“It’s good to have two squads to train together. It really helps both teams to be able to play games at the end of training,” Ms Trindle said.

They will play on Tuesday nights in Townsville, in an expected division one or two competition.

Braving the heat and showers of the afternoon, a strong field of 80 players, plus two visiting from Townsville, took to the

It marked the start of a new era for the club, with newly inducted patroness, Pat Lawson, relishing her new role.

The North Queensland Cowboys will take on the Townsville Blackhawks in an opposed training session this Saturday, 13th February at Rugby Park in Ayr. Commencing at 8:45am, each side will utilise the time to undergo essential pre-season training. From 11:30am,

The Bash 4 Brain Cancer is taking place next weekend, at the Home

Ayr Golf Club President Kevin Wegert said members were more than eager to get back into the swing of things on the course.

“They’re all very keen to get back to it. We’re hoping to be in for a great year this year.”
