A night of fun and festivities, our Carols will be one of the only physical Christmas events taking place this year, amid restrictions posed by the pandemic.

Taking place at the Home Hill State High School oval this Sunday, December 13, with gates opening from 4.30 pm, the program will begin at 5.30.

Special guests Jade Holland and James Blundell will be headlining the night, with locals Perform Music, Ricky Romeo, and Chris Quagliata also performing on the night.

QUEENSLAND Cabinet will be held in Townsville for its first sitting of 2021 in a special meeting.

The city hosted the state government in September 2019, with a host of ministers visiting the Townsville Entertainment and Convention Centre.

However, Burdekin MP Dale Last told Burdekin Local News that the meeting needs to be of value to the North, and not just an act of tokenism.

“It’s always good to see senior government and opposition members in North Queensland, but the true worth of this visit will be judged on the outcomes,” Mr. Last said.

“I would hope that the Cabinet meeting will actually provide opportunities for individuals and groups to meet with Ministers, to allow them to share the reality of what is going on in Townsville and North Queensland.

“When Parliament sat in Townsville last September, the government talked a big game, but very little was actually done to address the problems in the region.”

“The same Ministers who will visit next year were here in September last year and, in reality, we have seen little come out of that visit, especially when you look at the issues facing our farmers and youth crime,” Mr. Last said.

The sitting will provide an opportunity for the Labor ministers to engage in personal visits around the region.

“I would hope that the relevant Ministers take the opportunity to visit places like the Burdekin district and meet face to face with people to learn what is needed. The recent state budget contained very little to assist with diversifying the district or embracing new opportunities and, for our long-term prosperity, these are issues that must be addressed as a matter of urgency.”

TONIA Rossato and Doug “Chippo” Chappell have been the kingpins of the championships for the past ten years and are again busy working with farmers in the lead-up to the signature event.

“It’s really good for the Burdekin, especially Home Hill,” said Tonia, Home Hill resident and event volunteer.

“It was a really good event, and when we took it on, we wanted it to be as big as possible. It’s been growing and growing.”

Although put on hold this year owing to the coronavirus pandemic, Tonia hopes the festival, scheduled for the Showgrounds at the end of May, will be bigger than ever.

“The council’s taken it on, and they’ve made it into something outstanding,” she said.

“It attracts people to the district, and we’re really happy to keep doing that. The first fire is fantastic. There’s a lot of people that come out and support it.”

The championships have evolved to be part of Sweet Days, Hot Nights festival, but the contest has a long history of its own.

Beginning in 2010 as a small community event, it was briefly taken on by the Harvest Festival Committee in 2012, before being acquired by the Burdekin Tourism Association.

The event has previously taken place at Donnelly’s and Vass’ farms in Home Hill, before being taken over by Burdekin Shire Council, and settling at the Home Hill Showgrounds in 2018.

“We want to keep it going, because it brings people to the Burdekin and puts Home Hill on the map a little bit,” Tonia said.

Doug, 75, is a much-loved member of our community, and getting involved to see the survival of the Harvest Festival and the Cane Cutting Championships in recent years.

“We give thanks to Gudjuda,’ he said.

“They’re the ones that let it come here. It’s absolutely fantastic where it is.

“We have to plant the cane, they [the farmers involved] have to bring the planters all the way from out on the farm.

“They do it for the community – and we’ve really got a good community in Home Hill.”

“We’ve got a lineup of volunteers, mainly the canefarmers who’ve all come onboard.

We’ve got the Canavan family, the Vass family, the Linton family; and Seb Strano and his family do all the tractor work for us, which is absolutely fantastic,” Doug said.

With fertiliser donated from Nutrien and sprays by Ryellen Heliwork, the farmers look after the crop to put it in peak condition for the big event.

The Cane Cutting Championships showcase Burdekin cane farmers’ skills, celebrating traditional techniques of cutting cane by hand and attracting participants from all over the country.

“This is an Australian championship that has been going for a really long time, and it would be a shame for it to go,” Tonia said.

“I don’t think it will go, because the council has been very, very keen on keeping it here.”

She said it was great to see multiple generations of cutters participate in the event – and more women competing.

There have been many notable veterans, too, coming back each year to take part in the event.

“It’s great to see the old cutters come back, and the new ones come through, as well as the younger generation wanting to give it a go,” Tonia said.

“It’s a tradition. That was the only way they could cut cane in the old days. We don’t want to let that die.”

And the championships are hotly contested among every competitor.

“It is a skill that’s judged on how well you cut the cane and how fast you cut the cane,” Tonia said.

“It’s all about the neatness. You can’t just slash it – it’s a skill-based competition,” she said.

Doug said he is proud to continue to be a part of the event.

“I’m hoping that when I’m a hundred, it’ll still be going,” he said.

“We’re always grateful to be involved. The council do a really good job of making it such a community event; last year, there was a really good atmosphere, and it’s good they’ve got special guests coming. It’s just awesome for our community to all come together this year, after the year that we’ve had. I think it will be a really good event,” she said.

“We are going to be performing four songs, one of them I have actually written.

I had written a Christmas song during COVID, it’s called Be Kind This Christmas, so that’s going to be fun and exciting,” Amaia said.

It will be a perfect opportunity for young local performers to showcase their talents and get us all in the Christmas spirit.

“We haven’t had a concert this year, so it’s a good chance for the kids to get

on stage, so that’s another reason why we’re grateful.”

Many little helpers will be keeping us entertained on the night.

“We have over 50 kids performing. Events like this do not only get us out there, but it’s just another chance for the kids to get on stage and have another performing experience. See you all there; we can’t wait!” Amaia said.

North Queensland personalities Crystal and Brady from Star 106.3 breakfast radio will be hosting the event, so there’s no doubt there will be laughs aplenty in between the songs.

FOUR DAY CLOSURE A REGIONAL SETBACK REGIONAL towns across the state will go without access to major supermarkets and stores for four days due to trading laws.

With Christmas Day occurring on Friday and Boxing Day on Saturday 26th, the Boxing Day holiday has been pushed to Monday 28th December.

It means shops from a supermarket or retail chain will close for the four days, impacting towns across Burdekin, Bowen, Charters Towers, and Mt Isa, to name a few.

Access to food suppliers and potential Boxing Day sales retailers will be restricted; however, it’s a welcome change to help local small businesses, who aren’t impacted and can choose to open on the weekend and on Monday, should they choose.

In some areas, there have been concerns of panic buying for food in the lead up to Christmas; however, some locals have said there is no need, as families usually have plenty left over anyway.

1.25% ACROSS THIS RANGE.

With the easing of COVID-19 restrictions, local aged care homes have lifted restrictions on visitors.

There is now no limit on how many visitors a resident can have at one time, and no need to book in your visits.

Proof of flu vaccination is no longer necessary for new visitors. Visitors to the homes in both Ayr and Home Hill are still required to enter through front reception, sign in, answer the questions, and have your temperature checked.

Jerona Route Permits

Residents of Jerona are being encouraged to apply for recreational vehicle Route Specific Permits.

The permits allow users of recreational vehicles with Conditional Registration to travel between their residence and specified locations having been utilised in other townships for some time. The introduction of permits is in line with state regulations, following complaints received from within the area. Contact council if you need to apply.

Bottle Shop Thirsty Theft

Ayr Police recently conducted investigations into a theft from a local bottle shop, located a 29-year-old Burdekin man.

He was charged with one count each of stealing and disqualified driving and is due to appear in the Ayr Magistrates Court on 25 January.

Saving Queensland Jobs Under our COVID-19 response the Morrison Government has provided $10.7 billion in JobKeeper payments saving thousands of Queensland jobs.

The Australian economy is now fighting back. Our plan to grow the economy and create jobs includes: The JobMaker Hiring Credit that will provide an incentive of up to $200 a week for employers to hire new workers aged 16-35; supporting around 450,000 jobs for young people.

Establishing the $1 billion JobTrainer fund to create free and low-cost training places for school leavers and job seekers.

100,000 new apprenticeships and traineeships, with a 50 per cent wage subsidy for businesses who employ them.

Lower Taxes for Households and Businesses Queenslanders will have more of their own money to spend on what matters to them, generating billions of dollars of economic activity and creating new jobs.

Putting more money into the pockets of Australian households, with a tax cut backdated to 1 July 2020 benefitting 2.3 million Queenslanders.

Lower and middle income earners will this year receive tax relief of up to $2,745 for singles, and up to $5,490 for dual income families compared with 2017-18.

Thousands of Queensland businesses will be eligible for business tax incentives, helping 99% of businesses to immediately deduct the full cost of eligible assets.

Building Burdekin Roads The Morrison McCormack Liberal National Government is investing: Haughton River Floodplain Upgrade – $412 million ($514 million total) – 544 jobs supported to replace three bridges, upgrade 13.5km of highway and nine intersections plus add centre line treatments.

Palm Tree Creek overtaking lanes & highway safety works – $40.52 million ($45.2 million total project) – 89 jobs supported for safety upgrades over 10.5km.

Burdekin Bridge rehabilitation project – $64.7 million for major works.

Local Roads and Community Infrastructure Program – $1,479,882 direct to Burdekin Shire Council for roads, bridges and community infrastructure including works on Rita Island Road – Anabranch floodway and Norham & Airdmillan Road.

New reservoir a fluid boost for Home Hill Hayden Menso CONSTRUCTION has begun on a new five megalitre reservoir in Home Hill, set to ensure lasting water security for the town.

Tenders for the project were awarded in a special Burdekin Shire Council meeting recently.

Townsville-based firm TEi Services Pty Ltd will be contracted for the reservoir's supply and construction, appointed the project's principal contractor.

QPAMS Pty Ltd was awarded the contract for the reservoir's protective coating system; Jackson Semler Pty Ltd was given the contract for the pipework and pits; and Ayr business Burdekin Airconditioning and Electrical taking on the contract for electrical and communication works.

With preparations ongoing, construction of the reservoir is set to begin in early 2021.

The project's development is a joint initiative by the council and the state government, set to cost $4,455,645, and will be a significant boost for the town's infrastructure.

The existing water tower can store about 0.39ML of water coming from Home Hill's eight water bores, approximately 20 minutes' supply to the town.

The new reservoir's construction will see over two days (48 hours) of water available for Home Hill's 3,100 residents, should the need arise in an emergency.

Burdekin Shire Council Mayor Lyn McLaughlin said the improvements would benefit the community in times of need.

"The construction of a 5ML Reservoir ensures Home Hill has further water security in the event of any emergencies," she said.

"The Burdekin is a region of liquid gold – however collecting, treating, and distributing potable water is a process Council is constantly improving on to ensure all residents have reliable water security."

The project is funded by Burdekin Shire Council and the Queensland Government, having a 16m radius and situated behind Third Avenue.

It is expected that council crews will step away from preparatory work by Christmas, with the contractors set to begin work early in the new year.

A similar project will get underway next year to improve Ayr and Brandon's water security, ensuring longevity for future use and our district's growing population.

The Ayr-Brandon project, funded by the state government, will consist of new bore fields and a water reservoir, with new pipework, and tenders are set to be released in the latter part of 2022.

Burdekin Local News profiles members of the Kookaburras, the Salvation Army’s crisis workers doing incredible work in Ayr.

Elli McFarlane FOR Elli McFarlane, sitting on the streets of Melbourne with the city’s resident addicts was a far cry from her former life as a respected doctor.

By the age of 30, she was seeing her life collapse, from that of a respected professional to a down-andout drug abuser.

Now 41, she is again a changed woman, sharing her remarkable story with Burdekin Local News from the church of the Ayr Salvation Army headquarters, speaking gently with her hands folded in her lap.

“My life has just been plagued by instability,” she says.

“I was homeless for a while, sleeping rough.”

“To fall so far from grace, to go from being a doctor to trying to use ice while you’re sleeping in a doorway in Melbourne, in September when it’s freezing – I thought I was beyond saving.”

Elli had been working as a junior doctor with Melbourne health, working long hours caring for patients in various wards and departments of the Royal Melbourne Hospital.

On the outside, she was a healthy, young woman in her 20s, happy and excelling in her career.

But on the inside, a debilitating struggle with her mental health would eventually take its toll.

Elli was diagnosed at 20 with obsessivecompulsive disorder, finally understanding and coming to terms with an illness she had

been struggling with since she was six years old.

“There was a lot of damage I’d already done to my mental health by coping with this obsessive-compulsive disorder without being able to talk about it or get any help for it,” she says.

When her struggles began to snowball and eventually impacted her job, what followed was a downward spiral into substance and narcotics abuse, a dependency on prescription drugs and an isolating ice addiction.

“Issues of mental illness and addiction don’t discriminate,” she says.

“You can be a janitor or a doctor or a lawyer or work at Coles – it doesn’t make any difference.

“I just thought my life is absurd. I’ve got all this experience and training, and I’m standing here doing this.

“It was a coping mechanism but not a very good one.

“When you realise that you can’t live your life with or without drugs, that’s rock bottom.

“My anxiety was so high, and my self-worth was so low.”

Now out of recovery post-rehab and living in Townsville, Elli has been volunteering with the Kookaburras, a group of dedicated individuals working in crisis relief with the Salvation Army in Ayr. She has been helping them during their weekly support sessions for the past

five months, an experience she says pulled her out of her severe depression and relapse.

“I owe my life to these guys,” she says. “It’s the first time since I left medicine that I feel I have a purpose again, and I feel useful, and I feel good and happy.

“I really love coming down to Ayr; I’ve really become attached to coming here.”

She says her weekly work with the Salvos, helping people going through their own hard times, has been integral to her pathway to healing.

“When I went into rehab, I was so hunched over from looking down all the time,” she says.

“I was in an unimaginable amount of pain and suffering.

Now I have real friends.”

And through her new role,

she has been able to connect with other people who are struggling, relating to them by sharing her own past experiences.

“I’ve probably used my medical skill and my talking to people skills more in the last 14 months than when I was working in medicine,” she says.

“I try to do my best to help run the show, and I love doing it.”

The Kookaburras meet weekly at the Salvation Army church in Young Street, where people who are struggling can get support, through access to a Salvos crisis worker, food staples or just a friendly face in times of need.

“It’s just become more and more a community,” Elli says.

“We have our regulars, so if someone doesn’t turn up

here, we give them a call. If they don’t answer, we’ll go to their house just to check they’re ok.

“It’s like a big extended family now.”

Elli is currently a volunteer with the Kookaburras, but is currently undertaking the formal training required to be a fully-fledged Salvation Army soldier.

The qualification will allow her to play a more significant role in the Salvos’ crisis support work across the Burdekin next year.

And she knows completing the course will be a huge milestone for her.

“I will be more proud to become a soldier than when I earned my medical degree,” she says.

Rita Island Bridge Works

Emergency surface maintenance of Anabranch Bridge see a full bridge closure to all traffic from 10pm Wednesday 16 December, to 5:30am Thursday 17 December.

The night works have been scheduled immediately to rectify safety issues with the wearing of the bitumen road surface. Works are scheduled to cause least interference to road users; emergency service vehicles will have access; all other traffic will be restricted.

Meet your (toy)maker Marina Trajkovich WHEN Geoff Mains was growing up in Mt Isa, he had little more to play with than toy soldiers.

Now, he has taken on the role of master toymaker in the Burdekin, creating unique and vintage-esque wooden toys for disadvantaged children.

“I started to make them for my son,” he says, holding up one of his wooden tractors.

“I got into toys years ago as a way to relax me. I do a lot of different toys.”

A woodturner of 30 years, Geoff was inspired by a beautiful toy truck he won at a hospital fundraiser.

“I won it for my son, and he was only one year old at the time. I found out how to make it and started to build them myself.”

“I was a grader driver by trade; I drove all kinds of machinery, that’s why I like doing the machinery toys.”

“I started to slowly build myself up.”

Geoff is part of the Burdekin Woodcrafts Association in Ayr and has been making toys for the Salvation Army and Dale Last’s Christmas Appeal for the last five years.

The toys he makes are part of a donation pool that helps disadvantaged families over Christmas.

“It started off as a hobby, but now it’s full-time, I also do the markets in Townsville,” he says.

“If I see a photo, I can make it.”

He says that the process of making the toys is therapeutic, and has helped him through two and a half years of cancer treatment.

“I’ve got one more treatment next month, and then I’m finished,” he says.

“It does relax me; it got me through these last couple of years. It kept me going, kept me busy.”

Homelessness on the rise The BCA has noticed an increase in homelessness in the community, as low rental availability and changing eviction notices impact struggling families.

Marina Trajkovich THE Burdekin is experiencing an unprecedented spike in homelessness, amid low rental availability and the lifting of a ban on ‘no grounds,’ evictions.

Debra Cochran, the CEO of the Burdekin Community Association, says that as COVID rulings designed to protect vulnerable families from homelessness ease, there have been more families seeking emergency housing.

“In the past week we’ve seen people, including single mothers and their children, seeking assistance due to a “no grounds” eviction and not being successful in finding a private rental to move into,” she says.

“Some people are at high risk of experiencing homelessness if there’s no property available for them to move into by the time they have to vacate their current tenancy.”

She says that the rental market in the Burdekin has been shrinking as the area’s popularity grows, attracting buyers from the city who are snapping up homes.

With unstable living

conditions come other challenges for low-income individuals and families.

“It’s hard to get a job and keep a job if you have issues with where you’re living, where you can have a shower and get presentable for work.

Then there are the other things, you’ve got to be able to organise transport and feed yourself,” says Miss Cochran.

“It can be really hard to make ends meet.”

She says that there are misconceptions in the community about what it means to be homeless, with only 7% of people experiencing homelessness in Australia considered ‘rough sleepers,’ according to the Australian Bureau of Statistics. (ABS, 2018) “In general, I think a misconception is that to be experiencing homelessness, you are living or sleeping out in the open, in a shop front, park or alleyway.

“That’s not usually what BCA are seeing in the Burdekin. At times we do become aware of someone living in their car or in a park.”

A particularly high-risk and growing group is women over 55 who may be experiencing

“Ultimately, Christmas lights and powered decorations are electrical appliances and, like any appliance, if they’re used incorrectly, or they’re faulty, they can be dangerous,” Mr. Burke said.

One of the important aspects of correct light usage is knowing whether they are for indoor or outdoor use, an essential part of light safety.

“Quality decorations should always specify if they’re built for indoor or outdoor use,” he said.

“Of course, using outdoor lights inside the home is

perfectly fine, but never use lights built for indoor use outdoors because they are not water-resistant and can deteriorate, quickly becoming a hazard.”

The installation and maintenance process is an important part of festive decorating.

“Before plugging them in, check for signs of obvious damage, such as frayed cords and exposed wires,” Mr. Burke said.

“Christmas is about spending quality time with loved ones, and you want to keep them safe by following a few simple precautions.”

Beloved teacher parts ways Marina Trajkovich THE Burdekin School is acknowledging a bittersweet goodbye to Brisbane-born special education teacher, Yasmin Scott.

The young teacher has called the Burdekin home for the last four years, moving to Ayr to start her first teaching job where she quickly fell in love with the town and its people.

“I chose to move to the Burdekin because I wanted to explore the natural beauty of North Queensland - like the Great Barrier Reef, and to experience rural life and the closeness of a small-town community atmosphere,” says Miss Scott.

“In a big city like Brisbane, you may not know your neighbour or interact with people you cross down the street.

“I wanted to be a part of

something special, and the Burdekin is definitely just that, special.”

“Everyone welcomed me so warmly when I first moved to Home Hill, and I have had the pleasure of not only knowing but becoming lifelong friends with my neighbours.”

Drawn to teaching from a young age, she describes her love for helping people and her desire to help shape the future of younger generations.

“I’d always wanted to be a primary teacher because I wanted to make a positive contribution to and have an impact on the world by helping shape the next generation,” she says.

“I was drawn to special needs, specifically because not only do I love to help people, but I love to help them realise their full potential and push them to become their best selves.

“When I see and support my students, I see their potential and individuality when others might see disability.”

The 24-year-old wasn’t quite sure what to expect moving to Ayr from Brisbane but quickly became deeply involved in the town’s community events and clubs.

She’s been a part of the Silver Links Line Dancers, Home Hill Choral Society, the Burdekin Singers and Theatre Company, Burdekin Netball, and Snap Fitness to name a few and dived the Yongala shipwreck.

“I also was an active member of the Sacred Heart Catholic Church and helped foster a local youth group,” she says.

“My top two highlights in the Burdekin were definitely being involved in the festivities of the Home Hill Harvest Festival and being a

part of the Burdekin Singers productions of Chicago, Wicked and holding a minor lead role in Beauty and the Beast.”

“I met some amazing people through all I have become involved in over my time in the Burdekin and will cherish their lifelong friendships.”

“The people and the closeknit community atmosphere is definitely the thing I will miss most about the Burdekin. Everyone has been so inclusive and supportive of me,” she says.

Although she will miss the community, she looks forward to the opportunity to help other rural towns and continue her work in special needs education.

She’s accepted a teaching position in Warwick, closer to her family in Brisbane that will be expanding this week, as Yasmin looks forward to

“I have absolutely loved being a part of the Burdekin community and can’t thank everyone enough for welcoming me with open arms.”

Leonie Wheeler Marina Trajkovich

At 63 years young, country singer, teacher and author, Leonie Wheeler’s career has spanned several paths, and she’s seen more of the country than most.

Burdekin Local News chats to Leonie to learn more about her creative process and what she’s been up to.

So, Leonie, you grew up in Ayr before your work took you to different places around Australia, what drew you to travelling?

I think it was just a quest for adventure and knowledge that merged with wanting to experience different lifestyles and cultures, then being drawn to the richness of people’s lives and their stories.

I grew up in Ayr but I left when I was 17 to start doing some travelling. I think I’ve always had gypsy spirit in me. I came back to commence Teacher’s College in Townsville and then I travelled over to Perth to complete my training specialising in Aboriginal education and drama. Little did I know that over the years my teaching journey would take me from working in preschool to prison, and working at TAFE and in special needs.

The adventure started with teaching in very remote Indigenous communities in Western Australia and the Northern Territory. My first position was in Borroloola in the NT gulf country.

I married a cattleman a few years later and that took me into a different world from Indigenous education.

I loved working with horses and cattle, and in a day would go from being station cook to jillaroo then bookkeeper. I loved the people of the outback and the storytelling around the fire. Both of these lifestyles gave me the opportunity to see lots of places that most people don’t see.

A lot of your music is about your connection to different places in Australia - how do you think growing up in the Burdekin has influenced you?

I do remember walking around the cane fields as a child dreaming of being in the outback. The Burdekin is home. It is where I learnt about family and resilience, and how strong a woman could be, by observing my mother’s example.

When you meet up with a friend from primary school that you haven’t seen for 46 years, as I did recently, and still feel connected, it feels like home. Home is where I came back to, to heal the wounds of divorce, way back then.

How did you get involved with the music side of things?

I began a new phase of my life, being drawn into music through my new partner and his family who kindly encouraged me. I was totally insecure about it (still am in some ways) but then I just got the bug. I found I loved singing.

Tell me about your songwriting process?

Life is my inspiration! An event or even hearing just a couple of words in a conversation can trigger the lyrics for a song. It can come out of anywhere. Writing is my way of making sense of the world.

My album was called “The Journey” as it drew together the pieces of patchwork of my life – a love for my country, about heartbreak and loss, about love and hope, about people, and there is even a song about respect for those with disabilities. I have been fortunate to be able to collaborate with musicians like (local) Allan Sinclair to bring life to the lyrics.

Where do you get inspiration for your books and your music?

“Hope Valley”, my novel, allowed me to explore healing after heartbreak. You do become attached to your characters and I certainly put mine through some challenges. (I cried a lot writing it.) It is a story, not just a romance, about resilience after loss and one that male readers have expressed appreciation for as well as women.

What in your career have you been most proud of?

What kind of work is the most satisfying for you?

Both the album and novel played a part in healing for me. The greatest joy I experience is when people give me feedback about being able to connect on some emotional level with the story or a song.

A huge heartbreaking milestone in my life was when my six month old baby died in hospital. She had never made it out of the Special Care Nursery in Darwin.

When I was in the studio recording the song “The Angels Called”, I sang it to her. It was a very spiritual moment for me. When parents who have lost their children reach out to me because of how that song acknowledges their pain, I feel that these are the moments that satisfy me the most.

What are you working on now?

Living in Rockhampton, I’ve taken a break from teaching and I’m now working with my partner in real estate. We work together on his farm where we have some horses to love and ride in our spare time. We are always working on one project or another. I do a little singing still and I still write. I still dream of being successful in Nashville with some of my new songs as a songwriter. I live in appreciation of having a loving family and good friends, and treat each year given to my life, as a gift!

A Basque Christmas In the lead up to Christmas, Burdekin Local News will be profiling members of our community to see how their family celebrates Christmas.

For our second week, we speak to Rosemary Bengoa about the festivities of a Basque Christmas.

Hayden Menso THE BASQUE Country is the name given to the home of the Basque people.

Located in the western Pyrenees, Basque country straddles the border between France and Spain.

In the Burdekin, there are several families who hail from this region, Rosemary’s is one of them.

The Bengoa and Arrate families host large family gatherings for Christmas, sharing traditional foods and stories, embracing the traditional spirit of Christmas.

“Christmas is all about celebrating the birth of Jesus.

You’ll find a nativity scene in most households in the Basque country. It’s also a time to spend with family and celebrating with lots of food and drink. Keeping the Basque traditions of celebrations of singing and dancing in the streets is not really a practical option for us living in Australia, however, we make up for it when we get together on Christmas Day,” Rosemary told Burdekin Local News.

“In our household, we attend Christmas Eve mass, and start Christmas day sitting around exchanging and opening presents with the immediate family. My mum and my aunts still take turns in hosting Christmas Day, so the fun starts when aunts, uncles, cousins & children all arrive just before lunch,” she said.

“The day gets very noisy and busy quickly, with lots of cheer. It’s a full-day affair.”

The Basque Christmas delights in traditional foods, still enjoyed by the families to this day.

“Some of our traditional

dishes include Karakolak (Snails – which we don’t cook here) Bakalao (Cod), Kroketak (croquettes), Txipiroiak (Squid in black ink), Flan (baked custard), Bizkotzo (Basque cake), Turroie (almond noughart).”

In the Basque Country, the equivalent of Santa is Olentzero.

“He is a mythical Basque character who is portrayed as a messenger, who cries out that it is Christmas time throughout all the corners of the Basque Country.

“Like Santa Claus, Olentzero comes into your house using the chimney or climbing up your balcony with a ladder, and leaves presents under the Christmas tree while you are asleep.”

The character being a traditional Basque representation for the festive season.

“Olentzero is a gentle, chubby old man who works in the mines, face covered in soot, smokes from a pipe, and lives in the mountains.

He loves eating and drinking wine, and every Christmas, he brings presents to the good and coal to the bad (usually an edible sweet).

Members of the local Basque community maintain this tradition with a visit from Olentzero, when the community gets together for an end of year Christmas lunch at the Basque club house in Townsville,” Rosemary said.

New Year’s Eve Tradition Rosemary said of an old tradition, following Christmas to ring in the new year.

“One of Spain’s best known New Year’s traditions, is to eat 12 grapes at midnight.

“The idea is to put one grape in your mouth each time the clock chimes to bring in the New Year; if you manage to keep all 12 grapes

in your mouth and eat them, it is said to bring you good luck for the year to come.”

Kroketak (croquettes) INGREDIENTS • ½ boiled chicken, finely chopped • 4 boiled eggs, finely chopped • 300g ham, finely chopped • ¾ cup grated cheese • 250 g margarine or butter • ½ onion, finely chopped • 1 litre milk • 250g plain flour • Salt to season

For the crumb • Flour • 2- 3 eggs, beaten • Breadcrumbs

METHOD 1. Fry the onions with the margarine, stir and add flour, milk, cheese and salt to make a smooth béchamel sauce.

2. Add the chicken, ham and eggs, stirring continuously.

3. Place the mixture into a shallow dish and refrigerate overnight to set.

4. For the crumb, set out three plates. Put flour in one, beaten eggs in the second and breadcrumbs in the third.

5. Spoon the mixture into small round or oval shapes using your hands to mould.

6. Roll the croquettes first in flour, then egg and then breadcrumbs.

7. Lay them out on a tray until ready to fry.

8. Deep fry (as you would potato chips) until golden brown.

2020 A Most Unusual Year W

e all welcomed in 2020 thinking a new year, a new decade, let’s plan the year and start ticking off our goals. Well it certainly didn’t go to plan. We all faced difficulties that we couldn’t have imagined. For some people and businesses it has been a disastrous year and for others it has not only been quite normal but the busiest year ever. Some of the retailers are reporting excellent sales and growth in their businesses and in the Burdekin we have been extremely lucky to remain COVID free. The introduction of the Burdekin Newspaper has been a very positive move for our community.

I think our plans for 2021 will be to remain safe and for some rebuild what we have lost while others will be building on the growth of 2020.

The story for Real Estate has been a normal January, February and March with sales and rentals. From April onwards it was a very different picture for rentals, very quickly all available properties were snapped up and this has remained all year. Our vacancy rate is zero and we have an average of six applications for any property that comes vacant. On the sales side from June onwards enquiry started to increase and for the past 3 months sales have been excellent. There are as many out of town buyers as there are locals, investors, first home buyers and people downsizing or upsizing. Technology has allowed sales to continue while clients have been in lock down. Virtual tours,

video marketing and Zoom meetings have proven successful with out of area buyers.

The predictions are that Real Estate will continue to improve into 2021. Speaking with other regional Real Estate offices in Queensland their stories are the same.

East Ayr State School Awards Day 2020 Kris Favale Vicki O’Hara & David Legg Memorial Award

North Qld Sporting Achievements

ON MONDAY 7th December the East Ayr State School community celebrated their annual awards day ceremony.

It was pleasing to be able to allow parents, relatives and friends to attend and witness the presentation of awards and the Year 6 graduation ceremony.

Mr Bruno Sartori was in attendance to present the Jack Sartori All Round Consistent Effort Award to Ashlee Colls and the additional nominees being Tate Mann, Layla Pavone, Kelsey Cox, TitusJeheli Doolah, Jax Tinus.

The Liam Emerson Memorial Sporting Award was received by Nicholas Cathcart, Matilda Richards and Kelsey Cox. Recipients of the Academic Awards were Kelsey Cox, Emme Flanagan, Hunter Oats, Sally Laidlow, Caitlyn Cheyne and Sophia Moloney.

Hunter Oats was the recipient of the Arts/Cultural Award as well as the East Ayr Citizenship Award. The other nominees for the Citizenship Award were Charlie Shears,

Shae Laidlow, Ashlee Colls, Ava Swindley, Kirryn Laidlow, Brayden Becke, Tiana Cameron, Taylor Pitcher, Layla Todeschino, Ruby Jenkins and Adri Brooks.

Encouragement Awards were presented to Paige Stenning, Martin Ellsley, Emmerson Richards, Angus Innes, Rhia Nielsen and Ayden Barnett Nicholas Cathcart (swimming), Case Power (golf ) and Nash Power (golf ) earned North Queensland Sporting Achievement Awards for representation in their respective North Queenland sporting events.

Each year the Vicki O’hara and David Legg Memorial Award is presented to deserving Year 2 students.

This year the award was received by Noah Gosper, Adison Robertson and Kelsey Laidlow.

East Ayr State School also announced the 2021 School Captains: Kovi Cursio, Sophie Michielin, Nicholas Cathcart and Tyler Sheehan who will be inducted in a ceremony to be held early in 2021.

Marina Trajkovich AFTER 18 years with the Burdekin School, Rory Falco is saying an emotional goodbye, looking forward to life after graduation.

She recently celebrated the end of a challenging schooling year with her teachers and peers, coming together to share and reflect on Rory’s achievements at the Q Street Grill last week.

For her mother, Sandra Falco, the evening marks an incredibly proud moment, as she reflects on her families time at the school and the huge part it’s played in their lives.

“We started with the school when she was a baby, she was four months old when she started.

“She turned 18 years old this year as well and it’s been a long schooling journey for Rory,” says Sandra.

“We’ve really appreciated everything they’ve done and the staff go above and beyond. They are just a special kind of people.”

Rory was diagnosed with Down syndrome at birth,

working with the Burdekin School over the years to improve her cognitive and social skills.

“They really like you to get in early and do occupational therapy work, motor skill work, speech therapy to get her to where she is today.”

“We’re a bit sad to be leaving the school because we’ve been a big part of that community for 18 years. But I’m sure we’ll be back to visit.”

Rory has also studied at St Colman’s Primary school from prep to grade five and the Burdekin Christian College from grade five to seven in dual enrolments with the Burdekin School.

With COVID-19 and lockdown measures, it’s been a difficult year for the whole family, with Sandra teaching Rory from home amid a devastating cancer diagnosis.

“It wasn’t quite how we imagined her senior year would be, we did have to do the schooling from home for a little while.

“But Rory, she managed through it all with a smile.”

we’ve looked forward to this for a long time, the 18th, the graduation.”

Through her time schooling at home Rory has been learning more things like life skills, helping to prepare meals and work around the house.

“I did miss school learning but I do a lot of cooking with mum,” says Rory.

“I’m a good cook.”

She’s also been doing work experience with Lifeline and the Bowling Alley, gaining valuable hospitality and retail experience.

“It’s been hard work. I liked the clothes.”

Rory says that she would like to pursue work in either of these industries and looks forward to where next year will lead her.

Her teacher, Shirley Bailey says she is incredibly proud of everything her student has achieved.

“This year has been really good for her to get out and do things, especially in the last few months,” she says.

“Good luck to her in the future and whatever that brings for her.”

Mastering the Arts Senior students receive top marks Hayden Menso THREE of Ayr State High School’s creatives have been awarded top marks for their imagination and creativity this year.

Year 12 students Jessica Calligaro, Shannon Cowper and Monica Kupke were given the opportunity to let their creativity flow with only one criteria; to be inspired by a walk through downtown Ayr. Over a sixteen-week period, the girls put their works together, utilising different creative processes and materials between them for the assessment piece.

Jessica created a wearable art piece, heavily inspired by bowerbirds, the Burdekin’s blackbirding history, and the influence of this year’s pandemic.

“This was on the overexcessive consumption of human nature and collecting.

The bowerbird is a creature that collects only certain blue objects, I then went back through history and looked at the collection of people, and how the blackbirding had occurred during history, how traders would literally have people as objects to barter

workshop.

Shannon constructed a large kitchen, covering almost two walls in an art room, reflecting the progression of women in workforce opportunities over time, particularly our Burdekin sugar mills.

“I used things that look like pieces of machinery, to bring the mill into the kitchen. I also addressed COVID in making a toilet paper tea towel. My main source of inspiration was from when we went to the council; I really admired the strength of the women in our town,” Shannon said.

“I spent a whole day in the art room putting it together.

I started making the smaller things first, and then the big base and adding smaller components. I also used charcoal to make shadows.”

With cogs representing a link to machinery, they’ve been turned into functional pieces, being hotplates on the stove.

“When I did the painting, it looks as if you’re washing the wall, wiping it down, as women [would be] cleaning in the kitchen,” she said.

IF WE DIDN’T HAVE ART AS A SUBJECT AT SCHOOL, I PROBABLY WOULDN’T HAVE BEEN AT SCHOOL.

Jessica Calligaro – Year 12 Student and trade with; that’s where the anklets and bracelets can be found, representing people adorned as objects. I then also looked at the present, which is COVID. The virus, if you look at the molecules, is actually very pretty. Because humans like to collect pretty things, COVID had spread so much because we’ve overcollected and over-interacted with everyone,” Jessica said.

Her art piece consists of a wearable skirt, bodice, jewellery, and head-dress, and uses a variety of materials including driftwood, chicken wire, and cardboard.

“Everything was very clustered together, which was the purpose of having the skirt so big, because that’s how humanity is, as a whole,” she said.

Being a wearable art piece, Jessica was painted blue in her exposed skin areas, reflecting the inspiration of the bowerbird itself.

She said the piece took about 130 hours to make, putting it together and becoming blue on a Sunday

purification in the sugar industry, with her artwork showcased over three large white canvases.

“I linked my work to Ayr’s past, also with blackbirding.

The indigenous people were purified to be more like the white man, forced to learn white ways. There’s little sections of cane paddocks in there, with the tapestry of the paddocks. I’ve also got the cogs in there, to link to the mill; I put in some famous Australian animals, showing the significance of our Australian landscape that has just been overcome by industrialisation,” Monica said.

She used different perspectives through history to symbolise the message of purification.

“I looked at juxtaposed opinions, the black and white I used mainly in there, rich and poor, life and death.”

Monica’s artwork was created entirely freehand using an entire packet of permanent markers.

Hoey said the three students didn’t just have one piece to create for the assessment.

“Shannon’s was the kitchen, but she had individual pieces that made up the whole thing. Jess had the outfit, but the necklace was another piece, and she had a couple of 2D pieces as well. Monica’s was the three big panels, plus the corrugated iron piece,” she said.

“All the girls had to do bookwork as well, so it was pretty intense. But they nailed it, easy as,” Mr Hoey said.

Shannon said that studying Visual Arts has given her different ways of seeing the world.

“We have an advantage, because we have a really different way of thinking to other students. Instead of seeing one thing for what it is, we can see it as heaps of different things,” she said.

The girls’ creativity will lead them onto new experiences, having recently graduated.

Jessica is looking into further involvement in the arts, Shannon is looking to study Psychology at JCU, and Monica will be pursuing a traineeship at Burdekin Library in 2021, before studying graphic design.

The girls said their time in Visual Arts was a creative

feast.

“It’s the best experience you can get. If we didn’t have art as a subject at school, I probably wouldn’t have been at school; I would’ve just dropped out and went and found work instead,” Jessica said.

“Their results were absolutely outstanding. The mark that I put on [the work] was agreed, so they’ve all

done very, very well,” Mrs Hoey said.

The works were scored out of 25 marks each, with Monica scoring 24, Jessica 23 and Shannon 16.

“All of them did exceptionally well, because they started with nothing. It allows that creative thought, and it’s so important that kids have that’ Mrs Hoey said.

Agforce urges for increase in agriculture education funding THE Longreach and Emerald Agricultural Colleges in Queensland have been dealt a blow by the State Government budget, in what AgForce CEO Michael Guerin says will have a detrimental impact on the industry.

Mr Guerin says that he was astonished by the budget, delivered by the State Treasurer this week after acknowledging that agriculture was essential to leading Queensland out of its COVID-induced debt.

“Without urgent action, the currently idle agricultural colleges risk being lost to the industry forever,” he says.

“The timing couldn’t be worse. Young men and women from all over Australia used to move to Longreach and Emerald to study agriculture related subjects.”

He says that this will be a blow to many people moving to or staying in regional areas this year, the numbers of which have increased in a bid to avoid city imposed lockdowns.

“The Government is at risk of missing out on a huge opportunity, not only for agriculture, but potentially for tourism training, and commercial opportunities as

well, by not allocating seed funding to modernise these facilities.”

Mr Guerin said that AgForce had a lengthy history working to increase education into agriculture.

They have been a part of the National Agricultural Workforce Strategy to highlight the workforce issues currently faced by agriculture.

“We are prioritising the training needs of industry to make sure they are met and that includes reinvigorating the Longreach and Emerald colleges,” Mr Guerin said.

“Providing industryrelevant training is vital to

ensuring agriculture’s current and future workforce is ‘job ready’ with the skills needed in their employees.

“Agriculture has been deemed an essential industry.”

“If the State Government is indeed serious about agriculture playing its role as a key driver in the nation’s post-COVID economic recovery, which we believe they are, then they must find a way to return these colleges to their former glory.”

“This is part of a broader approach to supporting quality training for all agricultural workers.”

CANEGROWERS launches course for cane farm profitability INDUSTRY peak organisation CANEGROWERS is encouraging sugarcane growers to register for a TAFE Queensland course aimed at improving farm profitability.

“Competition in sugar marketing and the ability to forward price has opened up new opportunities for growers to enhance their profitability,” CANEGROWERS CEO Dan Galligan said.

“This new course aims to develop the skills and understanding to navigate this environment to make informed sugar pricing decisions.”

CANEGROWERS teamed up with TAFE Queensland and the Rural Jobs Skills Alliance to create the course,

Pricing Essentials for Cane Growers.

“As an industry entirely exposed to the fluctuations of world sugar prices, we need to be clever to compete,” Mr Galligan said.

“CANEGROWERS recognises that the ability of growers to maximise their returns is enhanced by an understanding of commodity markets, their own costs of production and capacity to manage business risks.”

The TAFE course, being offered for the first time in 2021, fits neatly into a suite of resources that CANEGROWERS has created which are available online to members.

“The more information and

skills they have at hand, the better-placed growers are to take opportunities to improve their profitability – something which is critical in times of low world sugar prices as we are seeing now,” Mr Galligan said.

The course is available between February and May 2021 in a range of locations in most sugarcane growing regions.

WITH nearly 70 per cent of Queensland still suffering drought, Rural Aid is bringing some muchneeded deliveries of hay to a community gathering in the Banana Shire, south of the Burdekin next week.

As five road trains full of fodder arrive at Biloela Showground, farming families still experiencing the effects of drought will be invited to come together for a cuppa.

The catch up on Tuesday 15 December is hosted by Rural Aid and sponsored by Bushells, as a way to bring neighbours and communities together, while a delivery of

hay is made to 20 producers in need.

The CEO of Rural Aid, John Warlters, said that while many drought-stricken parts of Australia have received rain this year, this district in particular has had prolonged exposure to drought.

“Farms in this pocket of Queensland have had a spot of sporadic rain here and there, but make no mistake, they’re doing it tough,” Mr Warlters says.

“It’s a region that has experienced prolonged drought conditions, and the longer they drag on, the more devastating the impact financially, socially,

psychologically,” Rural Aid will be completing a fodder drop at around 10 am inviting those in the broader region to join.

This will be the final hay drop of the year, bringing the calendar year total of over 22,000 bales of hay to over 3,300 farmers in 2020.

This activity is a part of Rural Aid’s Disaster Assistance Program, which provides practical and essential support and resources to farmers and rural communities before, during and after disaster events.

BACK in the Burdekin after a successful regional tour down Queensland’s East Coast, the cast of Give My Regards to Broadway have shared their touring experience.

Locals Rick Romeo and Monica Licciardello, along with Townsville performer Michelle Higgins, began the tour at the Burdekin Theatre on Saturday 21st November, before taking Broadway down south.

They spent the week on the road, travelling as far south as Gladstone and Maryborough.

Singer and actor Rick said it was a great tour.

“The audience got all my bad gags, and it all went really well. We got good feedback from everybody. There was a lot about Broadway that they didn’t know, that was very informative for them. I think Monica played brilliantly on the piano, and Michelle sang fantastically. I was just silly, but that’s what I do,” Rick said.

The show pulled significant crowds, despite the uncertainty surrounding crowds at the time.

“We got just on 400 in Gladstone, it went really well there in the beautiful theatre; and then we went onto Maryborough, and had just on 400 there too, which is great,” Rick said.

The tour turned out to be

an exciting trip for the locals, performing in new venues.

“It’s always hard when you go somewhere, when they don’t know you. They’re going to make their mind up in the first two or three songs whether they’re going to like you or not. We got great audiences, and they loved it.”

For pianist Monica, the tour was a chance to play in new venues and on new equipment.

“For me, it’s always nice to play on different pianos.

There were some very nice instruments from Steinway and Sons, a really elite piano to play on. Maryborough had a beautiful theatre, and Gladstone was a different environment being an entertainment centre. It’s really interesting working with different sound guys, they give you a different experience every time.

The tour was one of the first of its size for Monica.

“We’ve been to Cairns and done a few shows with Attori, but not on the road to this extent.”

Monica said it was a week to remember.

“Very good company with a lot of laughs, and a lot of terrible jokes.”

Rick wished to thank the audiences for enjoying the trip to Broadway.

“Thank you to the Burdekin for coming out and supporting us.”

A great field of forty-four players on Thursday and a cut of the cards were required to separate two players on twenty-three points. The lucky player was Bob Clerke, second was Peter Holmes and third on twenty-two points was Gerald Henaway.

Three triples matches were contested on Friday night.

The trio of Gary Pearce, Ross McLaughlin and B Marrson fought out a high class contest with Simon Griggs, Ray Paneccassio and Merv Wilshere with Gary’s team claiming victory on the last end with the last shot. Joy Woods, Rino Lazzarin and Lyn Storrie, had a night out, being way too good for Joe Yipanazar, Doug Kiehne and Margaret McLaughlin. B Brady, J Griggs, and R Run, took on C Griggs, S Griggs and O Wood, and shot out to a match winning lead, only for Chris’ team mounting a fightback, but to no avail as Jo’s team kicked back into gear taking out the contest.

On Sunday the AGM was held with all of last year’s executive maintaining their 2020 positions. This was followed by the President’s ham day with seven rinks of players trying to win a ham. The hams supplied

by D & S Meats were that good it would test the commitment of any Jew. First prize went to Dave Brown and Joe Yipanazar who put in a display that left their opposition, Con Sexton and Richard Mau, bamboozled, befuddled, and wondering what happened.

Second prize went to the trio of Ray Paneccassio, Helen Collins and Doug Kiehne who took the game by the scruff of the neck in the second half, dominating every end, leaving the trio of Hugh Montgomery, Rob Garner and Dave Sheehan searching for answers to their second half capitulation. Third prize went to the trio of Peter Jorgensen, Lyn Storrie and Damian Morello.

The trio of Peter Henderson, Bev Garioch and Glen Woodford were looking competitive for the first13 ends then Peter Jorgy kicked into gear picking off shots at will to dash any hopes of Peter Hendos team winning a ham.

Matches will be on again on

Friday night with names in by 6:00pm for a 6:30pm start and on Sunday with names in by 1:00pm for a 1:30pm start.

Burdekin Clay Target Club

The Burdekin Clay Target Club held a great shoot on 8th November with 42 competitors.

First up on the program was a 25 target Double Barrel Graded Sweeps event. In AA Grade the cash was shared by, Marius Venter, Lindsay Groat, Glen Rea, Wayne Cislowski, Annette Vassalini and Bruce Murphy who all shot 25/25.

No A Graders could shoot the possible but Matthew Baldwin, Phil Russell and Glen Farmer all shared the cash with 24/25. Steven Ryder and Michelle Russell both shot 23/25 in B Grade and split the cash. Chantal Morelli had a good round shooting 24/25 to take first in C Grade with Max Baldwin second on 23/25 and Shannon Radford third on 22/25.

Event Two was the 50 target Burdekin Pointscore Championship sponsored by Michael Populin. Overall and AA Grade was won by Lindsay Groat on 149/150. Matthew Baldwin was the A Grade winner with 144/150. John Kinnimonth won the B Grade prize with 142/150 and Peter Giardino shot 129/150 to claim C Grade.

Andrew Bergin sponsored the third event of the day which was the 25 target Burdekin Pointscore Continental Championship. Wayne Cislowski was the Overall and AA Grade winner with the only possible 75/75 shot. A Grade saw Jodie Towning the winner with 71/75. Steven Ryder was the B Grade winner on 70/75 and Alf Gangemi was the C Grade winner with 68/75.

The final event of the day was a 25 target Double Barrel Continental Handicap Cash Trophy. The winner was Glen Mchenry who won the only shoot off needed for the day with 28/29 with Col Edgerton second on 27/29 and Sam Waugh was third with 23/25.

This Sunday the club will be holding the final competition for the year with the Christmas shoot happening at the grounds with the main event of the day, the hams event, being sponsored by B & D Drilling with competition starting at 9.00am. Due to the number of bowlers who turned up to play, there

were only two games of pairs.

Some quality bowls were played on both rinks.

Glen Berryman and Steve Doig defeated Colleen Ford and Russ Tyson.

Mick Olsen and Alan Jones defeated Wayne Newton and David Ingold.

Overall winners were Mick Olsen and Alan Jones, who came from behind for a good win.

Rocky Ponds Produce held their break up party for their back packer supporters, at our community Hall on Saturday afternoon. It was well supported with about seventy people attending. It started out as a social bowls night and then a soccer ball rolled across the green, and of course, with all the European people attending , soccer was the go. Some of these visitors, showed how popular the game is in their own countries, with some fantastic foot work. It was good to see the young people participating and having a good time. This is the third time this group have used our facilities, and they are welcome back any time.

Due to the previous nights work for many of out team, it was decided to have a friendly fun day and a game of triples. One where we could relax a little and wet our throats. I think Black Fish won followed closely by XXXX. The winners were Les Oats, Karl Rummeny and Steve Doig.

Thursday will be our last social bowls day, before our breakup for Christmas. Names in by 2.30 for a 3.00 pm start.

Remember our Annual General Meeting on Sunday 13 th December. Please be there by 9.30am.

Home Hill Junior Cricket

It was the last junior games on Friday for this year and for the first half of the season.

Rowdy King left his best batting performance till the last game with 47 runs not out, followed

by Thomas Cardillo on 23 also not out. Cooper Lando and Ethan Pengelly got two wickets each for 5 and 12 runs respectively.

Some good scores were made in the U15s this week, the best of them was Jacob Machin who hit his way to 30 runs unbeaten.

The next best score was 20 runs by both Nicholas Pengelly and Joey Southwell, who was coming back after a few weeks off because of an injured ankle.

Corey Heidke was turning the ball well and was rewarded by clean bowling three batters for

11 runs. The pace bowling of Clancy Colls also had some of the batters wondering, he took 2 for 11 as well.

It was the last week for the teams in the Townsville competitions as well and we were lucky enough to both have home games. The Under 13 Blue team were up against Norths on the astro, we batted first and posted a very good score of 3 for 161 runs off our 30 overs. Thomas Cardillo was again in form with the bat scoring 36 not out. The other scores of note were Jarvis Dowson 19, Perry Munro 17, Ethan Pengelly 16 and Cooper Lando 15.

All the Home Hill players bowled and fielded well but Ethan Pengelly led the way with the ball with figures of 3 for just 6 runs off four overs. We restricted Norths to a total of 116 off their 30 overs in what was a very fine team effort with bat and ball.

Our Under 15s were playing Northern Beaches on the turf on Barry Richards Field this week. Northern Beaches batted first and due to our economical bowling and tight fielding were all out for only 57 runs. Brock Harrington was in the wickets again this week getting 3 for only 2 runs off four overs.

Corey Heidke spun his way to 2 wickets for 12 runs and Rian Berryman grabbed two catches.

I think the both teams thought it was a T20 game instead of 40 overs each because the whole game only lasted for 41 overs combined. We made 85 and was all out in the 23rd over but it was enough to come away with the win. Brock Harrington was our top scorer again this week on 19 runs followed by Nicolas Pengelly on 14.

It was good to win both home games before the Christmas break to end the year on a high note, hopefully to carry it on in the new year.

Home Hill Tennis

As the sun sets on another big year of tennis at Home Hill Tennis Association the committee would like to thank their players and their families, sponsors and the committee.

The club recognises their players’ commitment to the club in this difficult year with player numbers remaining consistent throughout the year. Many thanks also to our valuable sponsors who have supported us even though our events that we were able to run were on a reduced scale.

Finally, a big thank you to all the committee and players who have helped in any way with the day to day running of the club, maintenance and improvements to our facilities.

The Night Tennis finals were hotly contested between Minor Premiers Home Hill Car Wash and Bendigo Breakers. What a ripper it was with the games tied at 51 all at the end of the third round. Dallan Garvey played a captain’s knock winning all his matches for the Car Wash, but Saury Kanthivar and Sophie Rickards had other ideas for the Breakers also winning their 3 sets. On a count back the Breakers took out the Premiership 9 rubbers to 5. Home Hill Carwash played consistently throughout the season. Minor Premiers were Dallan Garvey, John Chandler, Dianne Edwards, Mark Vass, Paul Godfrey, Jack Edwards, Judith Arroita, Brad McAlister, Ash and Shanay Arroita.

It was won by Sandra Golf Club CELEBRATING a successful year on the golf course, 48 ladies headed to the Ayr Golf Club for the annual presentation and Christmas party on Thursday 26th November.

With a scrumptious meal catered by Howie’s Catering and sweets by some talented members, the day saw the major presentations awarded for the year.

The first award was sponsored by Amanda Gees for the lady who lost the most shots off their handicap for

Wight, who lost 16 shots for the year.

The presentations of the monthly medal final winners for each grade saw Cheryl Olsen awarded the C Grade Winner, Betty Durrant in B Grade Winner, and Wendy Baker crowned the A Grade Winner.

The prestigious Golfer of the Year, sponsored by Ray and Flo Wall, was awarded to Wendy Baker, for an exceptional year on the fairways.

2020 Ladies Captain Rhonda O’Brien was thanked

and presented with a gift by Carmel Dal Ponte, for her amazing contribution for the last four years.

Rhonda has taken Ayr Ladies Golf to the next level in her time as Captain, along with her support team whom she acknowledges regularly.

Incoming Ladies Captain, Carmel, has big shoes to fill, but we have no doubt she too will give 100% effort and accomplish great things. Thank you again Rhonda.

Bev Andrews told a tale of an outing during the initial COVID months, which was very entertaining; the unfortunate part of this humorous tale was that it was an actual ‘true’ story, of a usual Tuesday for Bev that went terribly wrong, but Bob did get his ham sandwich.

WITH THE semi-finals sorted out Delta Cleaners Night Soccer league has now reached the Grand-finals which take place tomorrow night, Friday 11 December. There will be ten finals plus the prestigious Drinkers Trophy. In the Mens A Grade Final Oary’s Levellers will take on UDS. And in the Ladies A Grade Final Amigos will meet The Outsiders.

As part of the festivities the SLoBs (Soccer Legends of the Burdekin) will be running a Christmas Raffle to raise money for the Burdekin Ex-Players Benevolent Fund.

WALKING SCORERS Walking Football will hopefully start around 11 January when some of that Christmas over indulgence will need to be shed. The rules are very similar to ordinary football except of course that running is not only out of the question, but is also penalised.

This form of the sport has become very popular in recent years in Europe and Burdekin Football / the SLoBs tried it out last year and are keen to get it going again. Although it is probably more

suitable for the ‘older’ and ex-players, both male and female, anyone can play.

A LEAGUE ACTION The A League is due to start on 27th December as is the W League. The A League is planning a 26 round regular season, which will mean some midweek games, with the Grand Final to be played before 30 June. The shortened season is due to The Tokyo Olympics which are due to start in July and for which the Socceroos have qualified.

In the first game of the A League season, Western Sydney Wanderers meet Macarthur FC, and two days later Brisbane Roar face Wellington Phoenix. Champions Sydney FC kick off their season against Melbourne City on 30 December.

AFC CHAMPS In the AFC Champions League Melbourne Victory beat FC Seoul 2-1at home last Thursday night to finish second in Group E to go through to the round of 16. However they lost 3-0 to Ulsan Hyundai and were knocked out.

In Group F, Perth Glory drew 3-3 away to Shanghai Shenhua before losing 0-1 at home to FC Tokyo to finish fourth. And in Group H, Sydney FC eventually came good winning 4-0 against Shanghai SIPG and then went on to draw 1-1 with Yokohama F Marinos but still finished fourth in their Group.

EUROPEAN KICKS In the EPL, Spurs and Liverpool still top the League ahead of Chelsea whilst in Germany Bayern is now only one point clear of Leverkusen. In Italy AC Milan is five points clear of local rivals Inter with Napoli in third place.

Meanwhile in Spain, Atletico lead Real Sociedad by one point with Barcelona in ninth place! And in France, PSG still leads, by two points, from Lille and Lyon.

Should you be interested, along with Aunty Gladys, in the Premier Armenian League, Alashkert FC is currently top of the table.

The European Champions League continues and since last week Liverpool and Porto have

qualified for the knockout round although Manchester Utd must win their final game to qualify.

TRY SCORING TOUCH FINALS Burdekin Touch Football Association THE U14 and Senior Mixed Touch Football Finals saw some close games to end the season.

Interceptors were the final winners of the A Grade trophy in the U14 competition, narrowly edging out Baywatch A. B Grade went to drop-offs between Flog the Meterys and Baywatch Cowboys, with Flog the Meterys the eventual winners. Twisties won the final game against Surfers.

The U14 competition was very successful, with many new players in 2020.

Junior touch players are welcome to join the U14 competition next year, as some of the U14 players will naturally progress to the Senior competition.

Guardian Pharmacy and CTT fiercely contested the A Grade senior mixed competition.

The first half saw Chris Previtera from CTT go over for two tries, but Guardian Pharmacy put Simon Power (2), Evan Chapman, and Emily Poli over the line for four.

The second half was scoreless due to some excellent defense by both teams, leaving Guardian Pharmacy the winners. Jeff Searle and Stephanie Monday were Players of the Final.

Podgy Bar won B Grade against First in Physio.

It was very close at the end of the first half, but Podgy Bar eventually ran away with an 11-7 win by full time. Players of the Final were Joel Mason, scoring five tries, and Kate Neal, three.

The experienced Red Rooster Relics were able to hold out the energetic players from Hot Steppers in the C Grade final. Jones Munro scored three for Hot Steppers, but the solid defense of Red Rooster Relics proved to be the difference in the 4-3 final score.

Players of the Final were Mick Taylor and April Pearce, with Red Rooster Relics also named Mixed Team of the Year.

Low Expectations showed plenty of pace and put on some great moves to defeat Baywatch A in the D Grade final. Daniel Schneider and Alana Dobe led the way for Low Expectations, with both players named players of the final.

Petrol Heads and Nutek Titans have played for many years now and faced off for the E Grade final.

The final score of 10-6 favoured Petrol Heads, with Kahlee Lennox being a standout player scoring four tries.

Trent Pyott and Sharni Lennox were Players of the Final.

Both East Ayr and Touch ‘n Go were down on numbers when they contested the

F Grade final. The score of 6-5 to Touch ‘n Go was a real slog, but both teams saw out the game, happy to join each other at the bar afterward.

Scott Hibberd and Corryn Innes from Touch ‘n Go were Players of the Final.

Rebels won the G Grade final against Blue Murder.

Player of Final, Jesse Ballin, was instrumental in Rebels’ win scoring four times, but he had plenty of help from the rest of his team. Faith Nelson from Blue Murder was the Female Player of the Final.

Referees were acknowledged by Burdekin Touch Association, with Ian Kerr (Senior Referee of the Year), Kaitlin Daley (Junior Referee of the Year), Evan Chapman (Most Improved Male Referee), and Rebecca Watson (Most Improved Female Referee) receiving trophies.

The club will be holding referee courses early in 2021 as there have been many rule changes needing introduction. Courses will be advertised, and players are encouraged to attend, free of charge; see our Website and Facebook page in the new year for dates.

Club Patron Jimmy Young awarded Club Person of the Year to Burdekin Touch Association President Tramayne Horan. It has been a busy year for Tramayne, as she has played, coached, and refereed and was COVID

coordinator, and instrumental in the organisation of junior, U14, and senior competitions.

Clubs battle it out

Joel Mason making a winning try on Saturday’s Colts vs Brothers game

Brian Carnes and Hayden Menso WITH a fantastic crowd cheering on all four teams, Saturday’s Club of Origin was an action-packed return to the rugby pitch.

A fierce battle between Colts, Devils, Brothers, and Hornets saw round-robin games centre field, with excellent kicking and tackling coming from all teams.

Hornets had to play Home Hill Devils in their last roundrobin game, and it worked out whoever finished in front went into the final with Colts.

As it was, the Hill won the match in the dying stages 8 – 6, after Chris Baker burrowed his way over towards the end.

Hornets had earlier lost to

Colts 6 – 0, before defeating Brothers 22 – 4.

Champion Under 17 player Dudley Dotoi showed his class, scoring two terrific tries during the day, while Rhett Williams set his backs away with some neat passing.

Andrew Kennedy put on a good display of goal kicking, while Jeffrey Searle was dangerous at fullback.

Brothers lost all their games, going down to Colts 16 nil, Home Hill 14 – 6, and Hornets 22 – 4.

Their players tried hard but were outclassed by the stronger teams; Lona Kaifoto, Jerome Lacco, Jared Giardina, and the Horan boys never gave up.

The grand final game was

Successful day of Rugby League action a foray between Colts and Devils, beginning with a dropped ball from the Colts kick-off by a Home Hill player, setting the trend for the showdown.

Colts took full advantage of the mistake with giant Mackay Cutters forward Jack Brock burrowing over to score minutes after the start.

Reliable goal-kicking fullback Joel Mason added the extras, and it was six nil soon after.

A break minutes later by Colts lead to a try by former Cowboy Young Gun, Kurt Perry, and the Colts were in command by 10 to nil at half time.

Jack scored his second in the second half, and with

Joel’s conversion, Colts were starting to celebrate at 16 – 0; but it only got worse for the Home Hill team when, after plenty of possession, big winger Marley Tom scored for Joel Mason to again add the extras and Colts home and hosed by 22 nil.

To their credit, the south of the river boys never stopped trying, and big forward Fraser Turner went over.

The try was not converted, but at least the Hill were on the board, down 22 – 4 with time quickly running out.

At the final siren, Colts had become victorious in the final with the 22-4 Colts win, named the champion Club of Origin for 2020.

Perry said that try was the first his team had let in for the entire day, after wins over Hornets 6 – 0, Brothers 16 nil, and Home Hill in the lead-up ten-nil.

Perry praised his whole team, saying they had tried hard, and with no points scored against them in the rounds, their defence was spot on.

Jack Brock was outstanding, backed by Dylan Carew and Zac Heron calling the shots, with Kurt Perry the star of the backs, although Joel Mason was dangerous as ever.

Kurt Boxall at five-eight had a great kicking game; one spot on, short up and under put Kurt Perry on his way to the try line, only to be recalled for

being offside.

It was a truly outstanding move.

Home Hill tried hard in the final, but a lack of possession took its toll; being on the defence for long periods made gameplay difficult after a long day.

Hooker Luke Carrett stood out in the forwards, with fiveeight Chris Baker doing some good work.

Roosters chairman Mick Brombal was extremely happy with how the day panned out, especially with the standard of football shown and the numbers of people who turned out to watch.
