Celebrate Your Mum Daniel Shirkie MOTHER’S Day is set to be celebrated across the region, but one family in particular are celebrating a tight-knit bond built over the years.

Playing the roles of both mother, daughter and business partners at Dominique’s, Jenny Papale, her daughter Dominique and daughterin-law Carly have seen their family, and their livelihood grow and change dramatically over the years.

The tight-knot bond between the different generations of the family has ensured an arrangement in which they’re all happy, and supportive of each other, despite the sometimes stressful and intimidating challenge of trying to run a constantly evolving business. At the heart of their contentment is a fairly simple truth that Ms Papale has tried to instill in her daughter.

DOMESTIC violence is still a pressing issue in Queensland and throughout Australia, with police attending a family violence call out once every three minutes and approximately one woman a week killed by a current or former partner.

In lieu of the usual march and vigil that typically occurs in the Burdekin, a stall and vigil will be set up to honour the lives lost and affected by domestic violence.

It will be held at Chill Parlour Cafe and Coffee on May 8th and community members are invited to place a flower from the collection on display

to place in front of the vigil in memory of the lives taken by domestic and family violence.

“I decided to try something new for this year by holding a small vigil and stall in the main street, and I have had an amazingly supportive response from local businesses and community members,” says Mary of Aveeda Wellbeing, a domestic violence and counselling support service.

The vigil has been supported by members of the Burdekin Zonta club, with several more awareness events planned throughout the month by various organisations.

Members of the Burdekin Community Association have also developed an awareness campaign targeting domestic

violence at a grassroots level, educating people on ways to seek help and the signs that you may be in an abusive relationship.

The BCA will be holding an awareness stall at the Norm Perry Memorial Duck Race on the 23rd of May, as well as the Australian Cane Cutting Championships on the 28th, and information packages will be available at the vigil on the 8th of May. Information packages and pamphlets cover things many might not initially recognise as domestic violence, things like coercive control, gaslighting and financial and psychological abuse that play a huge role.

“I believe it is important

for every community to fully understand the complexities of domestic and family violence and collectively make a stand against it and actively promote healthy relationships,” says Mary.

SHIRLEY GILMORE has been a driving force of guidance and change in the region, a familiar face for survivors of breast cancer during what is, for many women, the most challenging time of their lives.

After experiencing breast cancer herself thirty years ago, the maternity ward nurse noticed that support in the region was scarce for women going through the disease, and so she began the Burdekin’s first-ever breast cancer support group.

“When you get a diagnosis yourself, you’re looking for answers too. So that’s when I started to arm myself with information that I could spread to other women,” says Shirley.

“I was diagnosed in 1990, and there really wasn’t much out there to help other women or me. As much as I’d nursed for many years, it’s a different side of nursing when you are the patient,” she says.

“I used to run the maternity ward. Doctors would always say, ‘Shirley can you talk to this lady? She’s got breast cancer.”

A young boy was left hospitalised this week after a quad bike rollover on Alva Beach. A QAS spokesperson confirmed the boy was checked for spinal injuries before being taken to Ayr Hospital in a stable condition. The boy suffered abrasions on his arms and legs.

fundraising for organisations like the Cancer Council and Breast Cancer Network Australia, becoming an official liaison for the BCNA. This May, she is once again hosting ‘Australia’s Biggest Morning Tea,’ pairing with local businesses to raise money for the Cancer Council.

“I’ve done this pretty much every year since I was diagnosed, from when I started my support group in 1994,” she says.’

“I thought I could create some awareness nights here to educate women in the Burdekin. That was something that I needed to do in the

community. That was a big thing. It was the people in the community that I needed to help.”

“We do need to keep raising that money which is great, and we need to keep raising that awareness which is something else I always try to do.”

Funds from the Biggest Morning Tea go into supporting the Cancer Council’s efforts in Townsville, where many locals who are diagnosed with cancer will receive treatment.

“The cancer fund was able to help me. Their cancer support lodge in Townsville is a great place for women

to stay, or men or anyone in the rural area. It’s free; it’s a lovely building attached to the cancer unit in Townsville, and women can go there to get the education they want, the support they want away from home. That wasn’t available when I was diagnosed,” says Shirley.

“There’s a lot of things that are making it a lot easier for people diagnosed with cancer.

I think that’s why we have to keep the fundraising going.”

The morning tea will be held at the Sacred Heart Parish Hall on the 27th of May, with support from other businesses in the area who will cater the

local photographer, artist and art teacher who will guide participants through five tailored photography sessions, teaching them the tools of the trade and how to create their own compelling images.

“It’s aimed at people in our community who might have an interest in photography, but

maybe they don’t have those skills, limiting their potential and what they can do,” says Michelle.

“We’ll cover things like equipment settings, exposure and composition, look at the basics and the gear that people might need to get into different forms of photography,” she says.

The weekly workshop also addresses genres like portraiture and still life, relevant for families wanting to improve their shots or for businesses interested in improving their product photography.

FRONTLINE COMMUNITY service support centres are calling for more action on the issue of homelessness as the after-shocks of the COVID-19 pandemic and rental affordability issues continue to bite.

Debra Cochran, president of the Burdekin Community Association, says an uptick amongst people seeking help

and housing was noticed by the service at the start of the year.

“We are seeing an increase in homelessness, there’s no doubt about it, we’re seeing more people seeking assistance and support and definitely people looking for help getting into housing,” Ms Cochran said.

In Ms Cochran’s view, it’s becoming increasingly difficult for BCA’s housing and homelessness support

personnel to provide accommodation for those who have been rendered homeless.

“Social housing, rental accommodation and even long-term housing, we’re finding it increasingly difficult to actually find people the housing that they need,” Ms Cochran said.

“The short-term accommodation is extremely difficult, we have five accommodation properties that we manage, and they’re always full, with a waiting list of people to get into them, as well.”

The Burdekin Community Association is the largest organisation of it’s type to provide housing and homelessness relief in the Burdekin area, but even with their resources it’s been impossible to adequately address the growing problem.

Rebecca Grogan, BCA’s head of Housing and Community Support, has seen an uptick not only in the number of people seeking assistance finding reliable housing, but also the number of young people struggling to find accommodation in the region.

“Rebecca has made sixteen referrals to other services in the past three months and only two percent of those would have been over 25,” Ms Cochran said.

MEMBERS of a Burdekin based support group for family and domestic violence victims are spreading awareness and raising money for a women’s only mental health retreat.

Renata Jochova, alongside two other fellow survivors, Di and DJ made their voices heard at the Burdekin Auto Festival last week, providing information to interested visitors at the event.

A member of the Burdekin Cruisers Car Club, Renata says she felt compelled to join the vocal cause, empowered by her experience fleeing an abusive husband and seeking help with local support groups.

“We are a team of three ladies who have experienced domestic abuse in our own ways. Three years ago, we met at a ladies group that helped and supported us through our difficult stages,” she says.

Renata says that the support group has been critical to her own recovery and in rebuilding her life and that she hopes to continue reaching out to other women who are struggling.

“We gained some

knowledge, reassurance, tools and self-confidence so we could look out for the signs and not be a victim of abuse again.

“Through the group, we have been empowered and felt we needed to now spread the word. Domestic abuse is still very taboo, and not many like to talk about it,” says Renata.

She says that money raised from the collection tin on the day will go towards a women’s retreat for survivors of domestic violence and in the development of empowerment workshops.

“Money donated will go towards a women’s retreat that will help improve women’s

self-esteem and confidence and give some self-care and respite,” she says.

“It can also help give some women legal advice, leadership skills, give back some independence and to help them to feel worthy and loved. We are hoping to run some workshops and activities that will help in all these areas,” says Renata.

Fishing Zone Limits protect reef

A world first study of the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park has found that limited fishing zones are playing an important role in preservation efforts.

The zones limit fishing to one rod, one line and hook per person have been found to be an ‘effective management tool’.

“They contribute to marine park conservation goals whilst positively supporting fishing opportunities,” Co-author Darrren Cameron said.

Despite the deluge of rain experienced in recent weeks, progress on the Haughton River Floodplain Upgrade Project is continuing at a ‘steady’ pace.

ACCORDING to a spokesperson for The Infrastructure Group, who are designing and constructing the project for the Department of Transport and Main Roads, no significant delays are expected as a result of the recent wet weather.

“We’ve lost around about 40 construction days to rain, but we’re very confident that the projects will be completed this year,” the spokesperson said.

According to an official update provided to the

Burdekin Local News by the Department of Transport and Main Roads in April, construction across the 24 month period had been ‘swift’.

Approximately 1000 workers have been employed to take on the task of overhauling the stretch of the Bruce Highway, with around 850 of those employed locally.

In recent months, several milestones have been reached in the raft of half-abillion dollar upgrades being conducted on the Bruce Highway between Ayr and Townsville.

The upgraded road between

Trembath road and Bartlett road was sealed during March, while the final bridge deck unit across Ironbark Creek was also installed before April.

Many of the upgrades planned around the bridges covered in the construction and upgrade plan are expected to be hardened against flooding and adverse weather, with the higher, wider bridges now replacing the earlier models.

“TMR did consider leaving some of the existing bridges and highway alignment in place, in addition to the new structures and highway built

as part of the HRF project,” the report reads.

“However, the existing roadway and bridges do not achieve hydraulic outcomes for improved flood resilience, determined during project planning.”

“As a result, the existing Haughton River, Pink Lily Lagoon and Horseshoe Lagoon bridges will be removed once construction of the new bridges is complete and the new bridges are opened to traffic.”

As part of the construction efforts that have already been completed, 85,000 tonnes of

foamed bitumen have been laid across the project area, along with about 21,000 tonnes of asphalt.

The first section of the new and upgraded Bruce Highway to go into use will be between Bartlett and Piralko road in late June, while a further section will become usable in August.

“Ancillary works, including finalising local road connections to the upgraded Bruce Highway and demolition of the existing bridges, will be ongoing until late 2021,” according to the update.

Police investigate serious assault

Police are investigating the serious assault of a man in Townsville on Friday, April 30.

Just before 5pm, police were called to an address on Beattie Crescent, after the resident and four people who attended the address became involved in a dispute.

The disturbance resulted in the 44-year-old male resident receiving wounds to his torso, consistent with being stabbed.

He was transported to the Townsville University Hospital for treatment for life-threatening-injuries.

Anyone with information is urged to contact police.

Sugar Bowl’s return a sweet success Kate Caswell HOME Hill Tennis have declared the 40th Annual Sugar Bowl to be a roaring success.

The weekend kicked off with the Open Court Sugar Bowl dinner on Friday night.

The weather even did its best turning on a cool evening with no rain.

The white themed dinner under the fairy lights on the courts was definitely a hit with many of the former players, life members and past presidents turning out to enjoy the night.

Pat Anderson one of the duo of original organizers with husband Lex spoke at the dinner.

She said Lex would have been so proud that the Sugar Bowl is still as popular as it was all those years ago.

Pat said she had seen so much fun, sportsmanship and friendship at these tennis courts since 1981 and what wonderful memories that everyone has made to reflect on.

She also congratulated the Home Hill Tennis committee and members for the past 40 years for making the clubhouse, courts and surrounds the magnificent

complex it is today.

To make the celebrations special, the committee organized fishing shirts, stubby coolers and a history book of the Sugar Bowl. Kate Casswell said the book tells the story of the Sugar Bowl and how it began and how it is today.

It includes all the winners, captain’s names as well as photos that bring back a lot of memories. If anyone would like a copy, they should contact homehilltennis@ gmail.com.

The Sugar Bowl family came together on Sunday night and had a delicious pig on the spit for dinner cooked up by the Teaspoons team.

The large pig was quickly consumed by all who were there. The kids enjoyed time in the jumping castle. A big thank you to the Teaspoons and the Ace Ace Baby team for all their work on the weekend and especially for this event. The Teaspoons upheld their usual place of honour and were awarded the Team Spirit Award. They celebrated their win by having a drink from their cup.

For a $50 donation you were able to clip Ben’s hair. Col Casswell had the first chop cutting off Ben’s rat’s tail. Ben had been growing his hair since the 2019 Sugar Bowl and had vowed that he was not going to cut his hair to the next Sugar Bowl. He was pretty shocked when the 2020 event was cancelled due to Covid19. He was stoked that he could help and said Col was a great role model for every person.

The winning captains delivered emotional speeches as they received their trophies as it was very special to be the first to receive the refurbished trophies in the 40th year.

A Ladies Captain Hannah Casswell thanked her team their loyalty, camaraderie and sportsmanship.

Team member Mark Barbagallo from the B Grade Men said the win was very sweet as they received the Casswell family trophy. They did not know they had won it by two games.

Council’s spending on Water Park On this matter my suggestion would be to spend the smaller amount on a water park and the savings spent on an Aged and Disability Activity Centre. This could use the existing All Purpose Building making an area for people with a disability and seniors to exercise. A circuit for people to walk when it is raining or too hot to walk in the park would be very useful. An extension of the Rural Health Gym and facilities there at the show grounds would be excellent for community health because the existing building has out grown the amount of people using it.

We could also have a heated pool in this area with appropriate dressing facilities exclusively for people with a disability and seniors to access for physio and general exercise. A similar facility is available at Heatley Pool in Townsville which is overcrowded and closed on Mondays due to school competitions.

A local central facility would be an inclusive action for Seniors and people with a disability in the Burdekin Council and this spending would be very much appreciated.

Failure to provide transparency The survey being conducted by the Shire reference a proposed Water Park, is far from transparent. Is in fact designed to provide a fixed, pre determined outcome.

Preventing ratepayers from actually having a say on this proposed major expenditure by Council.

Your current survey requires a selection of either a $2.5m or a $3.5m Water Park.

If neither of these options are selected, the survey cannot be completed nor lodged.

This is preventing the actual real opinion of Ratepayers being known.

Recently I was provided a copy of a letter, by a Council Administration Officer that in order for minor repairs, to Home Hill Comfort Stop Water feature, the Chamber of commerce was advised to lodge an Arts Grant application,

and seek top up funding from private enterprise? A grant application was not successful, was quite rightly declined.

This Water Feature has been non operational for three years, the patch of tiling requiring repair small, and a very small water Pump replacement also possibly required. Council also fraudulently published this Water Feature had been shut off to deter pigeons.

Of course such lies are a trademark of your administration and our elected Mayor.

If our Council cannot afford to attend to a very small maintenance outlay to repair this water feature. Its obvious, our Shire cannot afford a waterpark, nor this type of facilities ongoing maintenance.

Previous water park structures were removed from the Ayr Pool precinct.

Maintenance costs reportedly to high,

this was at a time of a higher population and lower age demographic.

The local Government Act 2009 requires whilst you are Self Autonomous, that you also be transparent. Fixing the outcome of a supposed survey of ratepayers is certainly not transparent, in fact I would classify as council corruption.

I would respectfully request, no decision be made re a Water Park until such time as a free and open transparent new survey can be composed by Council and Ratepayers advised that such survey is open for completion for a reasonable survey period of time, thereby obtaining the true wishes of property owners in our Shire.

MAR. New mechanic and engineering workshop opens in Beaureapaires’ old spot LEON MARTIN’S got big plans on the horizon for his new patch of territory.

The local, who’s been living here since 1986 and has strong ties to the region, wants to give a little back in the form of his latest venture.

MAR, a new mechanics and engineering workshop, is being set up in the old Beaureapaires lcoation, the next step in what’s been a lifelong pursuit.

“This is really a flow-on from everything I’ve done in my lifetime up to this point.

I’ve done a lot of towing, I’ve been swinging spanners for about twenty-five years, working on all sorts of light and heavy machinery” Mr Martin said.

“I’ve worked on everything from big to small, so really this was just the natural

progression.”

“At first, I wanted a tiptruck, so I got one. I always wanted a mechanics shop, so I got one. I think the next thing on the list is a panel beater.”

Martin’s been joined in the venture by his head mechanic Justin Parison and apprentice Rhys Koch, who he says he’s grateful to have onboard.

Martin, who’s worked in the towing industry before taking on a mechanic shop, said he saw the opportunity to take over the spot where Beaurepaires tyres used to operate after other businesses closed.

“One of the other local mechanic shops, Hollingsworth Motors, that was one of the biggest in town, it’s closed down unfortunately, and I just saw

that hole in the market,” Mr Martin said.

“I’ve seen a lot of people asking for a workshop that provides good service. A lot of the premises in town right now are really busy, and sometimes people struggle to get bookings. We wanted to be able to get customers in and out quickly and to keep everyone happy.”

The new workshop’s space and location will provide the opportunity for both, with a spacious ‘drive through’ set-up that provides plenty of room for customers driving in and departing.

“Who knows, eventually it might be a one-stop-shop,” Mr Martin said.

Mr Martin said that communication would be key for the new business, noting the discomfort caused by a

mechanic visit in other areas.

“We want to give people good, friendly service, good communication with our customers, we don’t want anyone to be surprised,” Mr Martin said.

“When things come up on their vehicle, we want to be talking with them, so they know that a $200 job isn’t suddenly becoming a $500 job without them knowing why.”

“That sort of thing can happen a lot, people come in to pick their cars up, and it ends up being a lot more than

they expected to pay.”

The site will also offer other services, like raw materials that can be bought and loaded in during a stop.

“It can be tough to buy raw materials on the weekend, things like sand and top-soil, those sorts of things people might need,” Mr Martin said.

“Because we’ve got the drive through area here, it’s just a nice way to use that room and give the town another service.”

The team at MAR, most of whom are local, are also hoping to boost the town

economically, with aims to put on a second apprentice and keep growing once the business starts to flow through.

“It’s a big leap to take on, as a new business, it does take a while to get the trade going, but people know me and they know Justin, so I’m pretty confident, once people know we’re open, we’ll start getting them through.”

DARCY DIVING

Divemaster and aspiring conservationist Darcy Stirling never anticipated moving to the small community of Alva Beach, nor the opportunity to regularly dive its famous wreck.

Marina Trajkovich WHEN Darcy Stirling decided to undertake her divemaster internship, complementing her studies in zoology and marine biology, she had no idea it would soon take her to the opposite end of the country.

The 23-year old graduate from Perth, Western Australia, had sought out a dive centre where she could grow her experience underwater, discovering the famed Yongala shipwreck over 4000 kilometres from home.

“I started diving on the Ningaloo Reef and I just grew to love it; there’s a big diving community in Western Australia,” says Darcy, who has been working as a divemaster with Yongala Dive at Alva Beach.

“When I graduated, I began looking for jobs in Marine Biology, and all roads sort of pointed to doing my divemaster first.

“I realised that a lot of research projects expect you to have your divemaster qualification, so that’s why I was doing it originally. I never expected to be working in the industry!” she says.

Darcy describes her day to day life working out on the wreck, taking visitors out to the dive site and guiding them through the reef.

“My favourite part of the day is definitely people’s reaction to seeing the wreck, especially after that first dive. Going out there every day, you can forget just how beautiful it is,” she says.

“It really is one of the world‘s best dives; there’s so much to see. Because we are so close to the Burdekin estuary, we do get a lot of estuarine species like sea snakes, sharks and rays, and we’re also really close to the reef, so we get a lot of reef species like sea turtles.

“We also get a lot of big fish, whales in the season, giant trevally and big rays and sharks coming through,” she says.

Growing up in an outdoorsy family, a love of nature and growing desire to protect it came naturally to the young diver and environmentalist, who wishes to eventually pursue a career in conservation research.

She’s particularly interested in the correlation between marine biology and the role it plays in other elements of

environmental conservation, like climate science, and has studied the role of marine plants like kelp in reducing greenhouse gasses.

“I think that all of this has been leading me to a role in research, undertaking my own projects and having the ability to do so. All these things will all aid me in the future to do that research even though I don’t know what that will specifically be yet!”

Although moving from the city to the tight-knit community of Alva Beach was a new challenge for the young marine biologist, Darcy soon found herself at home in the small coastal region.

“I loved Alva beach, and all the locals are so nice, getting to go out with them fishing and going out on the quad bikes has been really exciting, and so when I was offered a job, I decided to stay and live here,” says Darcy.

“I really enjoy the community feel of Alva Beach. Everyone was so kind to me when I first got here; they really treated me like family because they knew I was so far away from home.”

Keeping it in the family Dominique, Carly and Jenny Papale have kept the family business going despite a number of changes

Daniel Shirkie WHILE the business, name and general vibe of Dominique’s have changed a lot over the years, one thing has always stayed the same, the family driving it from behind the scenes.

Papale matriarch Jenny, who was one of the creators behind the brand when it was still called Lilly May’s and based in Home Hill, has seen the business grow and change considerably over the years.

“It’s a bit all over the show sometimes, but we do have fun,” Ms Papale said.

What would become Dominiques began as Lilly May’s in Home Hill, a business which Jenny shared with a friend.

While business thrived, the partnership decided to expand into Ayr, running concurrently in both towns for around eight years before Jenny decided to take on the reins herself, striking out on her own.

The store in Ayr became hers and quickly became a family-based venture, with daughter Dominique joining the business straight out of school.

“It all happened within six months of us getting the store by ourselves. When Dominique joined us, we went into accessories, and we were a florist, and we were looking at doing weddings,” Ms Papale said.

Soon after, the family took custodian-ship of Populins Hall, and decided to cut back on their floristry to make sure they could stay focused on

what mattered.

“It really took up so much of our time, and that was when we decided to go fullon into the events side of things,” Ms Papale said.

“It wasn’t a difficult decision to set it aside.

Honestly, the accountant was more worried about it than we were. We were pretty confident that the events side of things would fill the gap.”

While moving away from the floristry business that started it all might have been bitter-sweet for some, for Jenny, Dominique and the rest of the family, it mostly meant no more storage costs and no more late nights at the end of the week working to put together arrangements.

“It’s time-consuming, there’s a lot of waste, it’s a really hard business, especially at the time we had Woolworths and Coles selling bunches for prices we’d never reach,” Ms Papale said.

“We’ve never looked back, though sometimes people do ring us about flowers.”

While most family-run businesses would blanch at changing tacks so many times in so few years, as well as taking on the responsibility of managing Populins Hall, Ms Papale says the success is a product of what she’s tried to teach her family.

“We roll with the punches, we always try to do something different all the time, and that’s what I’ve tried to teach Dominique, just don’t put all your eggs in one basket and give it a red hot go,” Ms Papale said.

As the business has grown,

so too has the family, with Jenny’s daughter-in-law Carly and her son also pitching in to help out.

“We got really busy for a while, then Carly came along, she married my son, and we needed more help, and they were keen for a seachange,” Ms Papale said.

“Now there’s me, my daughter and my daughterin-law. It’s pretty special.”

“We also have my husband, my son and Dominique’s husband as well, who help us out with functions and everything as well.”

Aside from their ability to count on each other, the tight-knit family unit behind the business is also Jenny’s preferred way of running things, with the family knowing each other well enough that there’s never any danger of falling out.

“There is a lot of stress because we’ve got a lot on.

There’s a lot to remember, a lot to keep track of, but working with family? It’s so much easier than working with anyone else.” Ms Papale said.

“Dominique’s incredibly creative when it comes to the events’ planning, I’ll do all the interviewing, all the consultation, I’ll bring all these ideas to her, and she’ll ask how she can possibly do all that. I always just tell her that she’ll be able to do it.”

“I’ve never had any doubt she can create what I dream up.”

Nowhere was that resilience and determination more on display than during last year’s COVID-19

Ms Papale feared having to shut the store’s doors after an entire year’s worth of events that they had expected to be overseeing were suddenly banned.

“We went from fully booked to having nothing in one day,” Ms Papale said.

“I was a bit like a deer in the headlights, but Dominique was there, reassuring me that everything would be okay, a bit like the calm in the storm.”

“We opened the doors every day and we’d get through it, sometimes there were days where we’d sell one candle for forty bucks, and that’d be the entire day’s sales.”

One thing that paid major dividends is the family’s flexibility, focusing on clothing sales now helping keep the lights on as people flocked in to pick up pieces from the store’s new range.

“That went really well too, and we jumped on and haven’t looked back.”

just the latest in a long line of changes that Dominique’s has experienced, but Ms Papale is confident that the business that bears such a strong connection to the family will be able to see it through.

“The name was my husband’s idea, she was not impressed, she was in Grade 12, and she was pretty upset, but it’s a lovely name, it’s very elegant, and it’s perfect

for the vibe of the store,” Ms Papale said.

“We really enjoy working together and spending so much time together.”

“We’re one team, one dream, that’s what we keep saying.”

There’s not much in the Burdekin that Doug ‘Chippo’ Chappell hasn’t been involved in over his 76 years, from sporting clubs to the Home Hill Harvest Festival and now, the Australian Hand Cane Cutting Championship.

DOUG ‘CHIPPO’ CHAPPELL has been a part of just about every sporting and festival committee in Home Hill, the proactive exrugby league player and carpenter citing his love for the town and community he calls home.

He runs through his seemingly endless list of volunteer titles from the Home Hill Showgrounds, overlooking the huge and iconic cane cutter statues, one of which was modelled after him.

He spends most days here lately, overseeing the small cane field, which will soon be crucial to the Sweet Days Hot Nights Festival and the annual Australian Hand Cane Cutting Championship he’s been running for eleven years.

“I just love Home Hill. This is my town. I’ve been here all my life,” says Doug, known by most as ‘Chippo.’

Back in the day, Doug played on a North Queensland Rugby League team, going on to start the first touch football club in Home Hill and later, he began coaching the under 15s division at the Home Hill State School, a role he was in for 20 years.

“After I gave up football, I was a referee for a number of years. I just love the kids,” he says.

He’s taken out several local titles and made a name for himself in everything from boxing to golf, rugby and swimming.

He remembers past competitions with a grin, recalling swimming races across crocodile-infested Groper Creek, partaking in local rodeos or taking out boxing titles in the region.

“I was the first club captain of the Home Hill pool, and I used to race down at Groper Creek.

I’ve taken out a North Queensland boxing championship,” says Doug.

“I’ve been into sport all my life, really. We’re very lucky here in Home Hill to have so many clubs.

“When I was 40, I entered the Home Hill Rodeo on a bull; when I was 70, I rode a steer,” he says, reminiscing.

“I used to help run the rodeo and was involved in that for a number of years but I’ve given it up, my grandkids are doing rodeos now,” he says.

He says that the women in his life have played a huge influence on him and his desire to be involved with the community, his mother also strongly involved in events and clubs when he was a child.

His wife, Frances, was a nurse and then a paramedic and now teaches first aid in the community. With her influence, Doug used to be the president of the local Home Hill

Ambulance committee when it existed, raising money for the station.

“All these things I’ve done, my wife has been involved in too,” says Doug.

He’s been the president and then zone chairman of the Home Hill Lions Club, the Vice President of the Ayr Surf Life Saving Club, and has been the president of the Home Hill Harvest Festival, running the parade.

He’s even spent 10 years as part of the Burdekin’s Rural Fire Service and helped design the Lower Burdekin Home of the Aged in Home Hill as a board member for the retirement home.

Chippo says that his proactive nature and desire to be involved in the community’s events, organisation’s and clubs comes from a deep-seated love for his town, exacerbated when he returned from service in the Vietnam War. “I went to Vietnam and lost two of my mates. When I came back, I just had this strong feeling that I had to look after the town.

“I’m the town volunteer; I’ve been here for 76 years. I just love the town and I love Home Hill,” says, Doug.

He’s been involved in the Australian Hand Cane Cutting Championships, now a part of the Burdekin’s Sweet Days Hot Nights Festival for the last 11 years.

“We were always looking for things to go with the festival. We found out that the Donnelly’s had sold their cane farm out in Dalbeg, which used to hold the Australian Hand Cane Cutting,” says Doug.

“Why I got involved, it’s like the Harvest Festival. Once you lose it, you’ll never get it back again, and I thought, what a good idea to have the Australian Cane Cutting Competition here.”

“And it’s great for the town,” says Doug.

He suggested introducing the historical contest to Home Hill, organising the event and gathering a handful of dedicated volunteers soon responsible for growing and nurturing the cane at the festival’s location, the Home Hill Showgrounds.

Crucial in assisting his efforts are the Home Hill-based farmers and lifelong friends who have helped grow and maintain the sugar cane for the competition and for the iconic first fire of the crushing season, which kicks off the festival.

“I’ve been around cane farmers all my life,” says Doug.

“I’m so proud of all these people who do it because they’re like me. They want to keep it in Home Hill.”

“It’s the best cane we’ve ever had. It’s great that Sweet Days Hot Nights have come on board; it’s just getting bigger and better.”

Skin cancer can be detected earlier than previously thought RESEARCHERS at James Cook University have made a shocking discovery in the battle to predict, and prevent, the most aggressive forms of skin cancer.

According to new research, counting moles on pre-school aged children can provide accurate predictions as to the risk of melanoma in later life.

Dr Ramez Barsoum and Dr Simone Harrison from JCU’s Skin Cancer Research Unit conducted a study following up on 51 people who first had their moles counted between 1985 and 1994, when they were aged between one and six-years-old.

Dr Barsoum said the study found mole-prone adults exhibit distinguishing features earlier in life than had previously been shown through research and early detection methods.

“Children in the upperquartile of mole counts acquired moles more rapidly than those in the bottomquartile. We also found children sunburnt before 7 years-old and fair-skinned, freckled children with some larger moles, sunburn freckles or a family history of melanoma were more at risk,” Dr Barsoum said.

He said few long-term

studies of this type had been done.

“We know that having a lot of pigmented moles (melanocytic naevi) increases the risk of melanoma, but few studies have counted moles in children and re-examined them as adults.”

According to Dr Barsoum, Queensland has the highest incidence of malignant melanoma globally, with 71 cases per 100,000 people diagnosed every year between 2009–2013, and 1429 melanoma-related deaths recorded nationwide in 2018.

“Identifying those at risk early in life provides greater

opportunity to intervene with personalised sun-protection counselling. Additionally, being able to reliably triage children into high and low melanoma-risk groups may result in more efficient

and cost-effective targeted screening,” Dr Barsoum said.

The finding is of particular importance to Australians, Dr Barsoum said, due to the country’s current status as the highest incidence of skin

cancer in the world.

The current rate of melanoma for men in Australia is 1 in 14, while for women it is 1 in 22.

Queenslanders urged not to be complacent with flu this year HEALTH Minister Yvette D’Ath is urging Queenslanders to get the influenza vaccine to help protect against the flu over the winter months.

“Now more than ever, it’s vital for all Queenslanders aged six months and older to get vaccinated against influenza this season,” the Minister said.

“Last year we saw a significant decrease in influenza cases due to social distancing and rigorous hand hygiene and we thank everyone for their amazing effort - but we can’t become complacent.

“We’re still in this pandemic and we need to prevent our hospitals from being clogged with flu patients during the winter months.

“Just as importantly, we need to prevent people from being infected simultaneously with flu and COVID-19.

“This year, all flu vaccines offer protection against four strains of influenza.”

Chief Health Officer Dr Jeannette Young said now is the best time to get the influenza vaccine to help protect against getting the flu over the winter months.

“Government-funded flu vaccines are being distributed for eligible Queenslanders, including those aged over 65,” she said.

“It’s also available to children aged between 6 months and 5 years, pregnant women, those with certain medical conditions and all Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people older than 6 months.

“They should all book an appointment to get vaccinated as soon as possible.

“Those not eligible for the free vaccine should still book an appointment with their GP, pharmacist immuniser, immunisation provider or as part of their workplace program (if available) to get vaccinated.

“Although the flu vaccine does not protect against COVID-19, it can reduce

the severity and spread of influenza, which may make a person more susceptible to other respiratory illnesses like COVID-19.”

Flu season in Queensland is typically from June to September, with the peak usually in August.

There is still flu circulating every year, and just like COVID-19, it can be fatal. The best time of year is between mid-April until the end of May to ensure you are best protected through the peak of the flu season.

It is also recommended to wait at least 14 days between the COVID-19 vaccine and the influenza vaccine.

AN unusual edible asset has been dubbed a potentially lucrative new industry for Australia, one that boats purported health benefits for adventurous consumers.

Australia’s national science agency CSIRO has released a comprehensive plan for what they dub an emerging and opportune new industry for the country, one with a reported myriad of sustainability and economic benefits.

Author of CSIRO’s Edible insects: A roadmap for the strategic growth of an emerging Australian industry, Dr Rocio Ponce Reyes, said the billion-dollar, global edible insect industry was growing fast.

“The worldwide edible insect market is expected to reach $1.4 billion AUD in value by 2023. Europe and the United States of America lead the western world market, with more than 400 edible-insect-related businesses already in operation,” Dr Ponce Reyes said.

“Insects have high-value nutritional profiles and are rich in protein, omega-3 fatty acids, iron, zinc, folic acid and vitamins B12, C and E. “They are also complementary to our existing diets because they are a healthy, environmentally friendly, and a rich source of alternative proteins,” she said.

Many insect-based food products are already on the market, including protein powders and insects as healthy snack substitutes, loved by enthusiasts for their nutritional properties.

More than 2,100 insect species are currently eaten by two billion people from 130 countries, including 60 native insect species traditionally consumed by First Nations Peoples in Australia.

Iconic Australian species include witjuti (also known as witchetty) grubs, bogong moths, honey pot ants and green tree ants.

CSIRO entomologist and report co-author, Dr Bryan Lessard, said the report highlighted the importance of supporting and promoting First Nations-led enterprises.

“The roadmap draws on the expertise of Australian and international scientists, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, insect farmers, food processing industry leaders and chefs, to set out the challenges and opportunities presented by one of the world’s richest sources of protein and other micronutrients,” Dr Lessard said.

“Australia has a high diversity of native insects. Working with First Nations enterprises, many species have the potential to be sustainably harvested or grown in low impact farms, to be turned into new and delicious Australian foods for us and our pets.

“Commercial insect farming is considered to have a low environmental footprint, requiring minimal feed, water, energy, and land resources – factors of importance to the modern health and ethically-conscious consumer,” he said.

Horace the amethyst python Beatty Kelly BEFORE the Burdekin River scheme purified water at the ‘Rocks’ into Sheep Station Creek, the lagoons and the creeks were reliant on the rainy season.

My house overlooked what is known as Kelly’s Lagoon. It also has the title of ‘Labatts’.

Depending on the weather the creek would rise & fall. In the 1930s there was hardly a puddle left. I had a photo of two small boys (my husband and his brother) standing on the cracked surface, a hard year for everyone.

A very old fig tree grows on the bank, and one day where I was walking my dog, I spotted

this huge coiled snake on an overhanging branch.

My husband wouldn’t believe my description but once he saw it, he changed his mind.

We phoned a wild life carer (can’t remember his name) who came to see ‘Horace’, as we had nicknamed him.

He identified it as an amethyst python, usually seen in the northern rainforests and said not to advertise it as there are people who would capture the snake for profit.

So just close family got to see Horace. My son-inlaw climbed the tree and took these photos. Horace obviously liked the flavour of

magpie geese which turned up each season because bundles of feathers all placed in the same direction were under the tree.

Horace would shed his skin and we would find pieces caught on fences. Just once however did we find an almost complete length so we took this photo to give an idea of his size, with three of us laying on the grass beside the skin. Horace would come and go around the farm, but we saw him no more. What happened, we never know, maybe he headed back to the northern rainforest.

Glogau’s project was selected from six finalists, narrowed down from 2,079 entries from 66 countries.

THE Gudjuda Reference Group is preparing for the Sweet Days Hot Nights Festival, Cultural Fair with events and educational activities planned to celebrate the region’s Indigenous history on the iconic grounds.

Eddie Smallwood, the Chairperson of the organisation, says that the exciting things planned this year have been made possible by a Year of Indigenous Tourism grant.

“It’s stuff that we’ve wanted to do for a number of years and now have the opportunity to do,” says Eddie.

“With the Cultural Fair, it’s like a family fun day. For me, the festival is just getting bigger and better,” he says.

The Burdekin Cultural Fair, held in Ayr on Friday the 28th May as part of the Sweet Days

Hot Nights Festival, will be opened with a Welcome to Country, with Eddie, a Bindal Elder representing the region encompassing at the Ayr side of the Burdekin Bridge.

James Gaston, a Juru elder from Home Hill, will orchestrate the Welcome to Country to open festivities at the Home Hill Showgrounds, where the iconic first fire and Australian Cane Cutting Championships will take place.

During the Cultural Fair on Friday the 28th, the Gudjuda Reference Group has organised a visit and performance from the Bindal Dancers from Townsville accompanied by a smoking ceremony.

“The grant has given us the opportunity to bring performers in. Previously we didn’t have the resources.

This year we’re looking at bringing in dancers and

performers too, and that’s on Bindal country. We’ve also got Juru dancers from Bowen,” says Eddie.

A renowned weaver and indigenous artist from Mackay will also be visiting the Burdekin for the fair, creating a weaving for interested onlookers to view her work.

An awareness stall will also be held on the final day of the festival at the Home Hill Showgrounds, with visitors and children invited to hand paint a resin mould of a turtle shell and engage in educational activities with Gudjuda’s rangers.

“It’s really about getting the community involved, but there’s also stuff for the kids.

We’re bringing out some of our turtle shells which kids can help paint,” says Eddie.

The group is also working on creating a rehab centre for young seaturtles for visitors to

engage with and discuss the group’s conservation efforts with rangers and visiting marine biology students from James Cook University.

“We’re also looking at getting some turtles there, so hopefully, when people come, they can see them.

James Cook will be assisting Gudjuda,” says Eddie.

“The main thing will be about education. It’s about sharing any of that history that people want to know.”

On the Land is proudly supported by COPPERSTRING 2.0 HIGH VOLTAGE NETWORK TO PROVE ‘ESSENTIAL’ A proposed high voltage network that aims to extend the national power grid from Townsville to the North West Minerals Province is set to be ‘essential’ to North Queensland’s green energy potential.

Speaking ahead of the Queensland Government’s Hydrogen Working Group meeting in Townsville, CuString Executive Chairman Mr John O’Brien said that the company’s project would link Australia’s best solar and wind resources with hydrogen production facilities in Townsville to create a world-leading hydrogen export hub.

Mr O’Brien said the development of a northern Queensland hydrogen industry had accelerated more quickly than anticipated with global industrial businesses such as Korea Zinc and their subsidiaries Ark Energy and Sun Metals, Origin Energy and Kawasaki Heavy Industries mapping out clear development plans for hydrogen export.

“Part of the billions of dollars in investment that hydrogen can bring to North Queensland over the next 10 years will be increasing

the electricity supply to Townsville by four, five or six times, and access to the enormous high-quality renewable resources unlocked by CopperString will be critical,” Mr O’Brien said.

“The CopperString corridor between Townsville and Mount Isa has the best wind and solar resources in Queensland to fuel the development of a ‘green’ hydrogen industry, and unlike other regions North Queensland has an abundance of water, all the key ingredients for our State’s continuing decarbonisation through hydrogen.

“There’s also the Port of Townsville expansion and the Lansdown Eco-Industrial Precinct in the works which will be Northern Australia’s first environmentally sustainable advanced manufacturing, technology and processing hub so the opportunity for our region is enormous if we invest in backbone infrastructure such as CopperString.”

Mr O’Brien referred to a recent Geoscience Australia report that showed that CopperString cut through the heartland of massive highly

reliable renewable resources.

“The area around Hughenden has a potential renewable energy capacity factor of 58% while other prospective areas proximal to our infrastructure include Kidston (capacity factor up to 52%) and around Mount Isa (capacity factor up to 56%), so North Queensland can compete with any region in the world on hydrogen” Mr O’Brien said.

“In simple terms, the wind around Hughenden blows

primarily overnight and the sun shines in the west after we lose solar generation on the east coast and the ability to leverage off the CopperString development to bring these immense resources online very quickly is a huge advantage for Townsville.”

• Raw sugar prices rocketed higher last Wednesday after Brazil’s leading sugarcane industry trade association – UNICA – published new numbers for the Centre South (CS) Brazil crop. The May21 ICE 11 contract reached a high of 17.98 USc/lb before closing the week and settling at expiry at 17.44 USc/lb.

• The first UNICA bulletin relating to the new CS Brazil crop reported significantly lower production of both sugar and ethanol compared to last season. There are currently only 147 mills in operation compared to 180 at this time last year and 624,000mt of sugar produced compared to 971,000mt in 2020. While the market already expected a slow start to the season, it is estimated the industry is on average 10 days behind its initially scheduled harvesting pace.

• A relatively low volume of 516,000mt of raw sugar was delivered to the tape (see our Jargon Buster) at the May21 contract expiry, the majority of which appears to be the remainder of the old 2020 CS Brazil crop.

• The latest Commitment of Traders report, dated 27 April, reported speculators had once again pushed their long position significantly higher and are now holding at 250,000 lots net long. This is now a larger position than the peak of the January rally where the specs reached 247,000 lots net long.

• The Australian Dollar broke above the 78 US cents level last week, reaching its high of 78.18 US cents on Thursday before dropping to its low on Friday of 76.96 US cents.

• In the United States, Quarter 1 Gross Domestic Product (GDP) was reported at 6.4% which is a significant expansion from 4.3% in Quarter 4 of 2020. However, this was slightly below expectations. The largest component of the GDP expansion was personal consumption, which surged up 10.7%. This statistic shows consumers are feeling more confident to spend money and stimulate the economy, which in turn supports the rapid economy recovery out of COVID-19.

• Chairman of the Federal Reserve Jerome ‘Joe’ Powell stated at the Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC) meeting that the US economy was still not close enough to its employment and price stability goals to consider reducing its monthly $US120 billion quantitative easing (QE) bond-buying program.

• Iron ore prices continue to provide strong support to the Australian Dollar reaching a record high of $US193.85 on Tuesday, breaking its previous record set in 2011. Strong physical demand from China appears to be the main foundation supporting the commodity.

Wednesday was our very own Patron Pat Day. At presentation, Ladies Captain Carmel DP, has had a bit of extra time on her hands not being able to hit a golf ball and she has turned her talents to entertaining us after our round each Wednesday

whilst we enjoy a cold beverage (its not all about the golf you know), and this week she shared a special personal poem she had written for Pat to thank her again for accepting this honourable role. Despite Pats amazed look - I know deep down she loved it.

Every year, one Wednesday competition prizes are donated by the current ladies Patron. Bev Rossiter handed over the reigns to Pat Lawson at the end of 2020 after many years of taking on the responsibility. Thank you again Bev for being such a great Patron and supporter of Ayr Ladies Golf.

After a heavy course last Wednesday, this week was pretty damn good. This may have been one of the biggest field of ladies playing on a Wednesday this year also. Other than a brief shower mid round the weather was very pleasant. It was very close up the top of the leaderboard with 3 players scoring 34 stableford points. On a countback, in 3rd place was Tuk Williams, 2nd place Dawn Cox and winning again this week was Ann Phelan.

The final was a high quality, affair between Gary Pearce and Steve Nellestein. Steve looked to have the match in his grasp, but Gary’s fighting qualities enabled him to persevere and take the narrow win. Two B Singles matches were contested with Mick McCloskey having a classy win over Ross McLaughlin and Leo Kenny fighting hard to overcome the challenge from Con Sexton.

On Friday night, in the triples, the trio of Tony Battaglia, Ross McLaughlin and Steve Nellestein had a narrow win over the trio of Margaret McLaughlin, Rob Jorgensen and Ray Paneccasio.

Rays team could only win an end by one shot whereas Steve’s team scored multiples on their end wins. In the fours, Chris Griggs, Ray Martin, Lyn Storrie and Gary Pearce went toe to toe with their plucky rivals, in Jo Griggs, Ross Martyn, Doug Kiehne, and Simon Griggs. Gary’s team prevailed in the end.

On Sunday, two Triples matches were contested. Merv Wilshere, Henry Hazel and Peter Jorgensen doused the competitive fire of Mick McCloskey, Doug Kiehne and Dave Defranciscis. OFFROADERS HAIL ‘MASSIVE SUCCESS’ OF CHAMPIONSHIPS

THE Burdekin Offroaders first on-track event of 2021 has been hailed as a success

by Club President Michael Marson.

A range of competitions and state championships were contested across a series of events in the Ryellen Heliwork Burdekin 300.

Brett Comiskey took out the first place spot in both his category and overall after a gruelling, challenging race designed by the club’s committee.

“It’s very challenging to have a massive event like that be a part of it, involving the state championships and such, especially for a smaller club like ours, but we’re very happy with how it all ran,”

Marson said.

“All in all, it went off really well and we’re all very happy.”

Marson dubbed the titanic effort a ‘massive success’, saying the turnout beside the track and behind the wheel were both impressive.

“It’s by far the largest entry list we’ve ever had, we’ve had people coming from all over, Brisbane, Cairns, out west, it all went off really well,” Marson said.

“It’s a big boost for everyone here, not just the club, but the area around as well.”

While the event’s inclusion into the Queensland State Championships was a big boost, it’s not the first time the club has been able to participate, with a prior event also having born state-

wide competition.

Despite the second iteration of the championships, Marson said he was most excited about the opportunity to give competitors from around the state the chance to race on tracks a little rougher than what they were accustomed to.

“We’ve had the championships around before, this is our second time hosting, and it definitely gives the southern competitors a different style of racetrack than they’re used to, I think it was a bit of an eye opener for some of them,” Marson said.

“For our club, we do this event and we do the river dash, and one thing we try and have a philosophy on is that we really don’t

want races that are simple, everything we put on, we want it to be a fair-dinkum challenge, and I think we achieved that.”

“The reaction from most of the challengers was that it was really satisfying to finish quite a challenging event.”

Despite the overwhelming success, Marson and the committee are eager to go back to the drawing board and start work on the next big event with what they’ve learned.

“We’ve got a few little things to work on, nothing substantial, but we always try and make sure that when we think we’ve got it right, there’s more to do.”

Offroad racers tested themselves on some tough terrain across the weekend

Footy Tips 2021 continues with the erratic scores, and it was a topsy-turvey week again with the Broncos and the Tigers upsetting their more fancied opponents.

With the Titans and Dragons losing their last three games, you wonder if their players have forgotten how to tackle, allowing 112 & 70 points scored against them.

Rabbitohs V STORM With both the Rabbitohs and the Storm being possible two of the inform teams, this week will be a cracker. With expectations of exciting with exhilarating attack and brutal defence, this will surely be the round game. While the Rabbitohs have a seven wins from 8 games record, their only loss was to the Storm in Round 1.

Even though the Storm currently sit one win behind the Rabbits, the irony is, they have a very similar for and against. The Rabbits are suffering from the absence of their star players: Adam Reynolds, Cam Murray, Campbell Graham and Jaxon Paulo, who are all injured. Add missing the explosive Latrell Mitchell, and it is hard to see them beating the in-form Storm.

It’s the total opposite for the Sharks, who sit in thirteenth spot with only two wins. The club is an absolute basket case of dissatisfaction. I can’t see this being a very pretty result.

PANTHERS to win and win easily. This will be a walk in the park for the leading team in the competition.

EELS V Roosters On paper, this should be another highlight game. Just don’t write off the Roosters. Like the Storm, they just seem to pluck game-breakers from thin air.

But with the Roosters suffering a debilitating injury list and facing one of the best and biggest forward packs in the comp, I think the Roosters will struggle.

Burdekin Hen Stephanie Monday playing for Townsville last Sunday at Brothers scored two tries in the second half to help Townsville to a 28 – 12 win over Cairns.

Cairns came out of the blocks at a rate of knots and soon had three tries on the Townsville team before half time.

A good talking too at the break had the Townsville side a different outfit second half.

With brutal defence Cairns were kept scoreless while the lady Stingers piled on the points.

Stephanie played at half back and was unstoppable till she was forced off with a slight injury.

Fellow Hen Shaniah Capper also played for Townsville and was

one of the better players.

Former North Queensland Marlin and Burdekin Rooster Mitchell Guy was a late call up for the Stingers playing on the Sunday against Cairns after being unavailable for the Mackay game on Friday.

Burdekin forward Temone Power withdrew from the team.

Mackay proved too strong for the Stingers running out winners 44 – 18 after leading 16 – 12 at the break.

Townsville were far too strong on Sunday defeating Cairns 48 – 6.

Jesse Pomare Andersen scored three tries for the Stingers.

Over the May Day weekend the Burdekin Panthers only had the one fixture, a 3rd Division match against Warriors. This was a replay of the first round fixture in Townsville two weeks ago when the floodlights failed after 25 minutes with the Austral Masonry Funkies leading 3-2! This Friday night however it was a different story with the Funkies losing 4-1 after being 2-0 down at half time.

This week, weather permitting the Panthers have five games.

The Juniors 2021 season finally got underway last weekend with parents and sponsors in attendance. The Under 15s beat Rebels 5-4 with goals from, Ethan Caltabiano, Kya Quagliata, Blake Walker, Ellyana Mugica and Alec Contzonis. The Under 12s lost to Rebels 1-3 with Sienna Lago scoring the goal. This week both teams are at home at the Junior grounds with U12s playing Olympic and U15s up against Warriors. The Friday night competition began last week and continues this week with games from 6.15 at International Park.

Monday Night Masters managed to get a game in this week. Numbers are slowly

captains in Cordner and Friend and season-ending injuries to Keary, Morris and Collins. With plenty of players on the sideline with injuries, including Tedesco, Smith, Lam, Lussick, the Roosters need to find a new crew of NRL players. Another merry-go-round of up and down teams experiencing disappointing win/loss results at the moment. The Tigers have won just their second game of the year and are sitting in fourteenth place.

This is a critical game for the Titans; having only three wins, they need to get back into the winner’s circle to remain in the Top 8 in what is becoming major congestion with five clubs all on six points. Titans have a 13 – 9 winning history and a 60% success rate at Campbelltown, so I think TITANS will WIN because they have more to play for.

With the Sea Eagles suffering a loss to the magnificent high flying Panthers and the Warriors winning the Lotto with a lucky win over the Cowboys, this is bound to be a good game. Sea Eagles dominate the stats at Lottoland with a win/loss result of 23 – 12 and a 61% win ratio at home, so it will be tough for the Warriors to win on the Peninsula. SEA EAGLES to WIN at home, and with the enigmatic performances of Tom ‘Turbo’ Trbojevic, I really can’t see the struggling inconsistent Warriors beating Manly.

COWBOYS V Broncos

If these two teams don’t pick their socks up, it will be a very disappointing year for their supporters and a coach killing season.

Raiders losing their last four games and Knights only winining one of their last five games has seen both teams fall into a hole seemingly too deep to dig out of.

With both team on six points and outside the Top 8, someone will have happy fans this week with a win, while the other side will be struggling to understand what went wrong. With the Raiders getting a few of their injured stars

This game will be a test for both clubs, a real tester for Todd Payton and the Cowboys playing at home and looking to get back onto the winner’s circle. With the Broncos holding a healthy win/loss ratio of 32 – 17 against the Cowboys in Townsville, I don’t see that as being impossible for the Cowboys to overcome. meet the Roosters in four grades.

Townsville Chairman Ross Andersen said he was very impressed with Mitchell’s game ..

“Mitchell never lets you down and this was no exception,” Andersen said.

This Saturday at Rugby Park club football will resume with the Roosters playing Centrals in four grades.

The Ladies will kick the day off at 2.15 pm followed by the under 19 at 3.30 pm, the reserve grade at 5.00 pm and the A Grade at 6.30 pm.

Centrals have only played one fixture match so far in all grades defeating Charters Towers 34 – 16 in A Grade, 52 – 12 in reserve grade, 22 – 18 in under 19 and 18 – 6 in the ladies.

The Roosters have played two games in each grade with each team recording a win and a loss.

The A grade were well and truly beaten by Herbert River 46 – 8 before beating Norths 34 – 10.

The reserve grade lost to the River 34 – 26 but then beat Norths 22 – 12 while the under 19 belted the River 50 nil before having a shocker with Norths going down 36 – 16.

The ladies went down to Herbert River 22 – 8 before going well by defeating Norths 36 – 6.

All Roosters teams are now sitting in the top four in their grade with the Hens team best placed at third.

This week all teams have a chance at going up the ladder when they meet Centrals at Rugby Park on Saturday night.

Hens coach Frank Beer will take a strong ladies team in against the Lady Tigers who are playing only their second game after beating Charters Towers first round by

18 – 6. In the second round they had the bye.

The Hens have had two games losing to Herbert River 22 – 8 and then defeating Norths 36- 6.

Centrals contain a few ex Brothers players who moved across for this season.

They also have former Hen in Soliel Heron who can be a real danger.

Beer has two strong front rowers in Jess Clift and former Cairns representative Shakira Carr and along with hooker Caitlin Daley will be strong up front.

The second rowers of Indie Everett with Paige Griggs are fit and strong while Tamara White add strength as well.

Five eight Stephanie Monday scored 4 tries against Norths and then two against Cairns and she will be a danger to the Tigers.

Beer has liked the form shown by winger Jo Morgan and he will move her to lock to give her room to show her speed.

After losing 1-2 in the first leg Chelsea won the second leg 4-1 and will now meet Barcelona in

the Final in Gothenburg, Sweden on 16 May. In the A League, with the end of the season fast approaching, the fight for the top six places and therefore the finals, is hotting up.

Some teams have only two games left to play, while others, Brisbane and Perth, have five games left. At the moment Melbourne City leads the table by three points from Central Coast with Sydney and Adelaide a further point behind.

Three points separate the next five clubs so at this stage so who knows who will make the finals.

The Socceroos start their World Cup qualifying matches in Kuwait on 3 June. They have four matches in twelve days and Coach Graham Arnold will name a 34 man squad to get them through. The matches are against Kuwait, Taipei, Nepal and Jordan.

In Europe it is semi-final time in both the Champion League and Europa Vase. Both competitions

are played over two legs and in the Champions League Chelsea drew 1-1 away to Real Madrid and Man City won 2-1 away to PSG. In the Europa Vase ManU thumped Roma 6-2 at home but Arsenal lost 1-2 away to Villarreal. The second leg games will be played this week.

In the EPL, Man City needs just one more win from four games to win the Premiership. They are thirteen points ahead of ManU with Leicester in third place and Chelsea is fourth.

In Germany there were no games in the Bundesliga. Bayern seven points clear of Leipzig, is still favourite to win the league with Wolfsburg in third place and Eintracht Frankfurt fourth.

Meanwhile in Italy, Inter has won the scudetto; thirteen points ahead of AC Milan with four games left. Atalanta is in third place and Napoli fourth. Oh yes, Juventus is still in fifth spot.

go Atletico is still two points clear of Real Madrid with Barcelona three points further adrift, a point ahead of Seville. Finally in France, Lille leads PSG by one point with Monaco four points behind and Lyon in fourth spot and virtually out of it.

Daniel Shirkie THE much-awaited Burdekin Junior Football season finally got the chance to sink the studs into the turf during the season launch across the weekend.

The season start, which was delayed last week due to rain conditions swamping the terrain, provided plenty of opportunities for the young guns to strut their stuff according to Burdekin Football’s Allan Chatfield.

Chatfield, who was on deck for much of the proceedings, said everyone involved had acquitted themselves well.

“Everything was pretty good, everything went on time, we had some great sportsmanship between our sides and the Townsville teams, which is always good to see,” Chatfield said.

“It was a good, hard competition across the park.”

Burdekin Juniors kick-off season at launch The under 12 Burdekin Panthers took on Townsville’s Rebel Razorbacks in round one of the district-wide competition, going down 3 - 1 in a spirited effort.

The under 15s side fared better, coming out 5 - 4 winners in a back and forth battle with their Townsville based rivals.

“Because the numbers haven’t been there for our own competition, we’ve decided to join the Townsville competition and our team’s competing in the A-field,” Chatfield said.

“I think there’s four teams in that field, four in the B-field and six in the C-field, as in teams in that twelve year old age group.”

After such a competitive showing in the first round, Chatfield was confident that the side would continue to build, with no sign of nerves at stepping up to take on

bigger competition.

“At the moment, we’re very competitive, but there is a difference in the standard of football being played between the two competitions, so the kids are needing to step up just that little bit,” Chatfield said.

“It’s only the early stages right now, by the end of the year, we should be very competitive, and it’s only four teams, so there’s a good chance of playing finals and if they manage to win that one game, they could be in a grand final before they know it.”

While the games on the weekend represented a minor seachange for the under 12s side, the Burdekin Junior Football system was out in force, with several games played between the region’s junior sides in good spirits.

“Some of those youngest kids have never even played

before, but they’re absolutely loving it,” Chatfield said.

“They get out there and they’re like bees following honey chasing that ball, and they can be quite competitive about it.”

According to Chatfield, the club were very satisfied with the way the day played out, especially given how tough times have been in recent months for sporting clubs.

“It was very slow last year, but we managed to finish our competition later on in the year, which is tricky with so many kids who play three sports, but it was very good to see them competing and staying loyal to their football,” Chatfield said “It’s good to get things underway, the numbers have been very steady, every time someone has to drop out, we get new people coming in. It’s great.”

The Burdekin Silverlinks survived a close call against the Highlanders during the week in order to keep their finals dream alive.

The Silverlinks came out on top 44 - 42 in order to keep a hold of the second spot on the ladder and ensure a semi-final berth.

Reds to cap off double blockbuster

THE Queensland Reds will be the second starring act in a kiwi double-header towards the end of May. The Reds will take on the Waikato-based Chiefs in a trans-tasman Super Rugby clash that will see the Queensland side hosted in Townsville for the first time in fifteen years, with Reds coach Brad Thorn optimistic about the club’s future prospects in the region.

“We want Townsville’s stadium to be our North Queensland cauldron,” Thorn said.

“The Reds represent the entire state. It’s very important for us to play in front of our fans in North Queensland.

The Burdekin Roosters will defend home turf against their rivals this Saturday, May 8. Games kick off from 2.15pm with the ladies operating as a curtain-pulling opening act, followed by the under 19s, then reserve grade and finally first grade at 6.30pm.

“You’ve seen all the positives from our Reds to Regions visits. This game will be another way to continue our connection with regional Queensland communities.”

The match is set to take place on May 29, one night after the North Queensland Cowboys defend home turf against the New Zealand Warriors in the NRL code.

Live music by Boothill Express will be heard throughout the day at Rugby Park on Wickham Street.

The Roosters will take on Centrals during the home game, fresh off a 34 - 10 win over the Norths Devils A-Grade side that helped keep all four sides in the top four heading into the next round.

The ladies currently sit in third place and will be looking to maintain that position this weekend.
