Bridging the generation gap Ayr State Primary School students visited Burdekin Men’s Shed for the last time this year to enhance their social connection and life skills A SIGNIFICANT community partnership between the generations has come to an end for 2020.

Burdekin Men’s Shed hosted young learners from Ayr State Primary School in their mentoring program for the final day this year.

Allowing Year 6 boys to create connections and learn practical skills outside the classroom, Men’s Shed has welcomed students in for the past seven years.

Students also have the chance to lay their hands at construction, picking up skills in carpentry they can take with them moving forward.

This year they made their toolbox during the program.

Friday saw their final visit for the year, completing their toolboxes and having a social session with the men.

“The boys had been four times before COVID, and all the restrictions came in. It’s good to have them back for a final time this year,” Burdekin Men’s Shed President Rob Ritchie said.

Ayr State Primary School teacher Keith Kiloh said the program helps students see a transfer of skills out of the classroom, conceived initially as a good-behaviour incentive.

Get giving ahead of time this Christmas Australia Post has set a deadline for Christmas gifts to arrive on time, in the midst of a COVIDdriven delivery boom.

AUSTRALIA Post is urging people around Australia to start thinking about their Christmas gifts ahead of time, setting a strict postage deadline for what they anticipate will be their biggest delivery season to date.

In order for packages to arrive for Christmas Day, shoppers are recommended to get online orders in as soon as possible, preferably by the end of November.

Lockdowns across states and international border closures have wreaked havoc on delivery times this year with delays on shipments difficult to predict.

The Ayr postal manager Kristy Cullen encourages people to get their orders in as soon as they can, particularly for international deliveries.

Update: Alva Beach Inquest In the latest developments to the ongoing inquest, the families of the two victims are demanding a statement from Dean Webber, previously excused from crossexamination in court

thursday 05 november 2020 THE families of Corey Christensen and Tom Davy, the two men fatally stabbed at Alva Beach in 2018 by then 19-year-old Dean Webber are fighting for answers during a coroner inquest in Cairns.

On the evening of October 1st, 2018 the two men were following behind an injured and distressed Candice Locke who had sought refuge in Mr Webber’s home shortly before midnight.

It was stated at a preinquest conference that Ms Locke and then-boyfriend Mr Davy were going fishing at Alva Beach before running into long term friend Corey Christensen, who invited them to an NRL grand final party.

In evidence given to the police in the days following

Law+Order AT 7pm on Saturday 24 October, Ayr Police were conducting investigations into recent burglary offences when they located a 16-yearold male youth at a residence in Ayr. He was subsequently charged with three counts of attempted burglary and two counts of wilful damage.

He was refused bail and will next appear in the Townsville Children’s Court 26 October.

A 22-year-old Burdekin woman was charged with five counts of Extortion and one of Unlawful Stalking and released on conditional Police bail to appear in Ayr Magistrates Court on 12 November.

At 1am on Wednesday 28 October, Ayr Police intercepted a vehicle in Young Street, Ayr. The driver, a 30-year-old tourist, was issued a Notice to Appear for drink driving, .208 and is due to appear in Ayr Magistrates Court on 23 November.

An investigation was initiated in March, 2020 into a complaint involving the alleged extortion of a juvenile in the Burdekin

between October 2019 and January 2020, where threats and intimidation were used against the victim with multiple demands for money made. It will be alleged that money was handed over by the victim during this time.

This investigation culminated in the execution of a search warrant at an Ayr address on 27 October. As a result of these investigations, a 22-year-old Burdekin man was arrested and charged with 50 counts of extortion and one count each of Unlawful Stalking, possessing a dangerous drugs, possessing anything used in the commission of a crime define in Part 2 and possessing a drug utensil. He was refused bail to appear in the Townsville Magistrates Court 28 October. A 22-yearold Burdekin woman was charged with five counts of Extortion and one of Unlawful Stalking and released on conditional Police bail to appear in Ayr Magistrates Court on 7 December.

At 7.15pm on 29 October, Ayr Police were conducting

the event, Dean Webber said that Ms Locke, a stranger at the time, had come to his Alva Beach beach house nursing a dislocated shoulder after allegedly being thrown from a buggy.

He said that three men followed shortly after, looking for her.

The video of Mr Webber giving this evidence was revisited during the coronial inquest.

“They came back a couple of minutes later. I heard the buggy pull up and I took a look and it was them again, three of them on foot,” Mr Webber said in the video.

“When the first male individual got the door up over the latch, then the three of them came in and started pummelling me,” Mr Webber

told police.

“I’ve never been so scared in all of my life, I thought they were going to kill me,” he said in the video.

“I can’t remember words, there’s blanks everywhere. I just don’t want to remember.”

Mr Webber was not charged that evening on the grounds of self-defence.

The inquest has also examined the role of the police department on the night and how the incident could have been handled.

Evidence was given that although Queensland Ambulance services arrived on the scene, they waited for police back up that was delayed by a drunk driver in custody at the Ayr station.

Deputy State Coroner Jane Bentley had previously ruled

burdekinlocal.com.au that Mr Webber would only be made to give evidence in writing in regards to the incident, taking into account his current mental state and the trauma involved with relaying the night.

But the families of both the men who were killed have fervently disputed this decision, calling for Mr Webber to be cross-examined before the court in the hopes of shedding light into his role during the evening.

The victim’s families have won that appeal however the Supreme Court is yet to make a final judgement about how Mr Webber will give his evidence.

This decision is unlikely to be made until next year.

Council Releases investigations into a complaint of assault received when they located a 34-yearold Burdekin man. As a result of those investigations, he was issued a Notice to Appear for one count of assault occasioning bodily harm and due to appear in Ayr Magistrates Court on 7 December.

At 4.10pm on Monday 2 November, Ayr Police intercepted a vehicle in MacKenzie Street, Ayr. The driver, a 20-year-old Majors Creek man, was issued a NTA for disqualified driving and is du to appear in Ayr Magistrates Court on 9 November.

Incumbent Member for Burdekin retains top spot Hayden Menso THE QUEENSLAND State Election campaign has come to an end.

With an unprecedented number of pre-poll votes and important marginal seats hanging in the balance, this election was like no other.

Eight candidates fought for the chance to represent the Burdekin electorate, making sure it was an election filled with new voices and diverse campaign promises.

Set to be re-elected is incumbent LNP Member for Burdekin, Dale Last, scoring 39.7% of the preliminary count, at the time of going to print.

Labor candidate Michael Brunker was in second, with 32.3%.

Mr Last has told Burdekin Local News that the campaign was a tough one this year.

“It was full-on, with a frenetic pace in the running up to the election. The logistics of servicing such a large electorate and getting around to all the pre-poll booths and making sure that we were staffed and equipped, it was absolutely full-on, no doubt about that.

“The results from the election on Saturday were surprising and humbling and overwhelming in many respects. Some of those western booths, when you have a look at the results, were extraordinary, and it’s certainly very humbling to get that support. I’m so grateful for this electorate and the voters to recognise that all the hard work that I’ve put in over the term is recognised, and they were happy to put their faith in me to be their

representative in the next parliament.”

Although the Liberal National Party has not won overall, the Burdekin continues its streak of representation by an LNP member under a Labor government.

“We’ll be calling on the government to honour the commitments made by the Labor candidate, as is right and proper to do so,” Mr Last said.

“For commitments that I made, I’ll be pursuing those with the relevant ministers because they are important

initiatives. Those were brought about by feedback from the community, from sporting groups, industry bodies, local government

authorities, and certainly, I’ll be pursuing them vigorously in the coming months.”

Mr Last’s representation does not mean anything that

has been committed to will not be carried out.

“It all comes down to relationships, and I’d like to think that I can work with the

government and the relevant ministers to reassure that we receive our fair slice of the pie. That’s my role – to fight and advocate on behalf of the community, and I’ll be continuing to do that,” Mr Last said.

Entering his third term as Member for Burdekin, Mr Last has also declared his intention to run for deputy leader of the LNP. It comes after LNP leader Deb Frecklington stood down from the role after the loss, with leadership expected to be taken on by former journalist, Townsville councillor, and Member for Mundingburra, David Crisafulli.

“I’ve confirmed that next week when we have our party room meeting, I’ll be throwing my hat in the ring for the Deputy Leader’s role. We need a strong representation of the north; I think it provides the perfect balance. With the leader based in the south-east and the deputy to be based in the north, it sends a clear message to Queensland that we are a party for all of Queensland and not just Brisbane.”

With 34,920 enrolled voters, 27,034 votes (96.95%) and 825 informal votes (3.05%) have been counted by the Queensland Electoral Commission to date.

Dr John Trace created monumental change in the community during his time as Mayor, all while working full time as a doctor with the help of his wife, Therese. We chat to him to see what he’s been up to and how the Burdekin has changed since 1979.

From creating the Burdekin Theatre to Queensland’s first computerised library, Dr John Trace was responsible for several historical developments in the Burdekin, all while maintaining his medical practice and caring for several generations of families in the community.

Now semi-retired and working in Brisbane, kept busy by his children and young grandchildren, John reflects on his 28 years as a practising doctor in Ayr and his achievements during nine years as Mayor of Burdekin Shire Council.

So John, can you introduce yourself to some of our readers who may not remember you from your time as Mayor?

Born and bred in Home Hill, my parents and grandparents lived in Home Hill, and I went to school in Home Hill at St Colman’s Catholic School. I went to boarding school in Charters Towers and from there spent the next few years in Brisbane doing my science and medicine degrees.

What made you decide to pursue medicine?

Well, that’s interesting because right until I signed my enrolment form I was going to do law and my pen slipped, and I did medicine!

I think I was probably influenced by a certain doctor in Home Hill called Doctor Joyce, who was our family doctor for many years and probably discussions with him over a period of time led to a change in heart.

I look back on the last fifty years, and I don’t think it was the wrong decision. I also have a son who’s now a lawyer and a daughter who’s in her final year of law.

Can you tell me a bit more about your medical career so far, is there anything you’re particularly proud of?

It’s been some 48 years since I’ve graduated and it’s been a mixed bag.

Medical practice is all about caring for people over a long period of time, and I look back over the situation in Ayr, where at times, I treated four generations of the same family.

It’s been a bit of a mixture, and when I came to Brisbane, I worked in aged care for five years and then emergency work with the Mater Private Hospital and then I had a bit of travelling time out west, relieving emergency and GP obstetrics.

Now I’m sort of semi-retired in Ipswich working in family practice.

How did it feel returning to Ayr newly qualified as a doctor, and how did you get involved with the Council side of things?

I always treat it like going back to the origins as it were and I felt involved both with the medical side of things and in other aspects.

I was asked to get involved with the Ayr Chamber of Commerce in the very early days and then was elected to be chairman of that. One thing led to another, and I was elected to the council in 1979. One of our platforms was based on improving the cultural situation in the Burdekin.

The Burdekin Theatre, the library situation was the result of that platform, and from that point, after a term on the council, I stood for Mayor and was fortunate enough to be elected.

What kind of things did you achieve over those years, and of what are you most proud?

Looking back, I think they were very productive years.

We hopefully left the town in a much better state after the nine years I was Mayor of the council.

Lots of things happened in that time, the theatre and library were built and opened, lawn cemeteries, industrial estates. Minor things like wheelie bins for rubbish collections and mechanised street sweeping, we closed the old dump as you drove into Ayr which was an eyesore.

I think lots of things happened at that time that made the town much more livable.

One of the exciting things about the library was it was one of the first fully computerised library services in Queensland. From the day it opened, our users could walk in to use the computer and find the books that way.

That was certainly a first for Queensland.

While you achieved all this, were you still practising medicine?

Yes, it was very busy, only made possible by the work of my good wife who was a qualified nurse! And so she functioned as both the wife of the Mayor and the manager of the medical practice and remained very busy. It wasn’t a 35 hour week!

How have you seen the town change over the years, and what stands out the most?

To me, it was always a town with excellent people. Just the general development I suppose, out of all the things the council achieved, the cultural side of things would have to be top of the list.

I look around now, and that theatre is still as good as any provincial theatre in Queensland. I think the library service up there continues to be excellent. Those kinds of things really contribute to a community.

The sporting aspects of the town always stood out; we’ve always been proud of the achievements of people in the sporting community.

What are you up to now?

My family are all sort of in this area in Brisbane. My youngest daughter is working for Metro Art in a senior position. I have some grandchildren, my daughter has a young lass, a five-year-old, and twin 10-month-old daughters, so they keep us entertained at times. It’s mainly work and family life these days.

Hospital staff celebrate 40 years of service WHEN Bertilla Scodellaro, Jocelyn Tuffin and Joanne McBow began their careers at the Ayr Health Service 40 years ago, they had no idea they would still be working side-by-side four decades later.

Bertilla, Jocelyn and Joanne were three of 29 people recognised for a collective 605 years of dedication to healthcare in the Burdekin this week, at the annual length-of-service ceremonies at the Ayr and Home Hill Health Services.

For JocelynTuffin, her nursing career at Ayr Health Service began when she was only 15 years old.

“I left school for this job, and it is surreal that I’ve worked here as a nurse for the majority of my life,” she said.

“I like helping people at their most vulnerable time; having someone to lean on at that time is so important and something I’ve enjoyed, which is why I’ve done it for so long.

“It’s been my first and only job, and I wouldn’t want to do anything else.”

Ms Tuffin said she knew fellow nurse and forty-year length-of-service recipient Joanne McBow since well before their nursing careers.

“I went to school with Joanne, and we started our nursing training at the same time,” she said.

“We even lived together in the early days of our careers and became quite good friends.”

Ms Tuffin said despite being recognised for the significant milestone; she felt like she was just ‘doing her job’.

“I’m one of the lucky ones who has got to spend their life doing something they love,” she said.

“I’ve really loved the clinical side of nursing, working in the emergency department and surgeries and have just loved my colleagues.”

“They are like a family away from family, and I wouldn’t change a thing about my career.”

Ms Scodellaro shared Ms Tuffin’s sentiments and said her role as the hospital courier was one that had given her great fulfilment over the 40 years.

“I’m a people person, and I enjoy communicating with people which has made this job a rewarding one,” she said.

“I’ve worked as a cleaner and in catering, and

I’ve seen the hospital change over the years but always for the better.”

Ms Scodellaro said it was great to have colleagues like Ms McBow and Ms Tuffin to reflect on the 40 years with.

“Not many people can relate to having worked at one place for this long,” she said.

“I know we all feel good about our contribution to healthcare and our community.”

Nurse Unit Manager Ms McBow said she was honoured to mark the milestone with her two friends and colleagues.

“It feels really good to have reached this stage in our careers because there is a lot of history between us, both professionally and personally,” she said.

“Because it’s a small community we not only work together, we socialise together, we share each other’s highs and lows.”

“It’s like a family here; it’s not just people who work together.

Ms McBow said she was privileged to see the health services expand in the Burdekin over her four decades.

“We have the benefits of a much more multi-disciplinary team these days,” she said.

“It’s nice to be part of the evolution of the health service and to build relationships that are so special. The sense of community I’ve experienced in this hospital makes it a really special place to be a nurse.”

Townsville Hospital and Health Service chief executive Kieran Keyes said health care in a rural setting was a unique field of work.

“It is great to see so many staff in the Burdekin recognised for quite substantial years of service,” he said.

“I’m always proud to see health workers across our rural communities so passionate about delivering healthcare,” he said.

“Congratulations to each and every one of our staff receiving an award and thank you for playing your role in keeping your community healthy.”

For Jocelyn Tuffin, Joanne McBow and Bertilla Scodellaro, colleagues at the Ayr Hospital and Health Service have become their family, with the trio celebrating 40 years of service.

Bowen grower Carl Walker is facing a staff shortage in picking his crops

OUR Burdekin region is abundant with land and crops, an essential link in Australia’s food supply chain.

Farmers have identified that there is a shortage of seasonal workers to pick fruit and vegetable across the Burdekin and North Queensland.

The issue is complex; local fruit and vegetable farmers need a labour force to pick crops.

However, acquiring this force is an issue.

Bowen-based farmer Carl Walker from Phantom Produce/Walker Farms, also, President of the Bowen Gumlu Growers Association says the issue is only just beginning.

“The pain we are suffering now is nothing

compared to 2021 if we don’t fix the problem.”

An essential part of his workforce, backpackers, leaving Australia due to COVID-19 has created a void in the industry.

“Because so many backpackers have left the country, there’s not enough floating around to fill positions not taken up by either Pacific Islanders or locals,” Mr Walker said.

Referred to as ‘the triangle,’ the labour force scheme consists of Australians, Pacific Islanders, and backpackers.

“With our industry, we have a flexible labour force, and that’s why we’ve pushed the triangle,” Mr Walker said.

Carl, who grows capsicums, cucumbers, and tomatoes, says the importance of backpackers is undervalued, with their

position being imperative to farming labour and the economy.

“With backpackers, they come here to see Australia, so they spend every cent they’ve got to see Australia. It’s great for the economy and great for tourism. That’s what we’re trying to get through to the government; it’s all very well saying ‘to rely on Australians to fill the positions’. Many Australians won’t do it because it’s not their cup of tea.

Holidaymakers see it as a job, to make some money, and see this great country.”

The flexibility of seasonal workers is an essential aspect of the industry to maintain a balance.

“To sit and wait to be needed for a week’s work, then not wanted for three is hard for

locals. Backpackers and holidaymakers are quite happy to have a week, month, six month’s work, and then go back to partying and sitting on the beach, because they’re on holiday,” Mr Walker said.

Although the labour force has been devastated by the pandemic’s effects, our region’s expansion is increasing demand.

“The Bowen-Gumlu region in the last 15 years has gone from being worth twenty million-dollars to a half-billion-dollar industry. Yet our population in Australia has not increased enormously, so we must identify that we haven’t got the workforce, and our expansion is growing too fast.”

However, the picker shortage is adding stress to businesses and owners.

“If you cannot find enough people to pick up your product, then it becomes a loss. It’s a loss not only to me as a business but to the community and the country,” Carl said.

Mr Walker says the Growing industry can positively impact our economy’s recovery from the pandemic’s effects.

“We’ve got the opportunity in our industry to grow and export moving forward. If the economy is stronger because of farming, which I believe it can be, it helps [lessen] the overall impact of this debt onto the rest of the nation,” Mr Walker said.

Lorelle McShane, a local zucchini and squash grower operating Dalbeg Inn – McShane’s Produce, has faced similar staffing problems leading to the loss of crops.

“We were unable to pick our final crop due to not being able to retain or get any new

markets were closed down. No-one knew what sort of market we were going to have,” Mrs McShane said.

Lorelle estimates her business has lost about 15,000 boxes worth of product for the whole season.

Using backpackers as a labour source works well on Lorelle’s farm, with workers appreciating the country lifestyle experience while on the job.

“Some love it; some hate it. But for the ones that stay for their three months, they’re always very sad to leave. They all say, ‘I don’t know how I’m going to handle city life.’ They do find it very difficult to leave the simple life.”

Lorelle’s location offers a unique worklife experience for visitors, with the on-farm accommodation generally a drawcard.

Mrs McShane, whose business offers accommodation onsite with the farm located out of town, has ended up slashing her crops to the ground.

“We had to make the decision to slash again. In all, from what we estimated, we had about 5,000 trays to pick, and the current price was $30 per tray. So that’s about $150,000 lost there.”

Growers felt the other impacts of COVID at ground level.

“It’s not been a good year for a lot of growers. A lot of us started late; the whole country was in lockdown, so a lot of the

Students of Home Hill State High School took part in the Tradies For A Day program

SWAPPING pencils for electrical wire, Burdekin students have grasped an insight into a trades career hands-on.

Home Hill State High School and Ayr State High School Year 10 students took part in “Tradies for a Day,” hosted by the Queensland Minerals and Energy Academy (QMEA) and Evolution Mining Mt Carlton, on October 28 and 29.

The days offered a variety of activities using practical applications and skills from the trades and mining industries.

Beginning with a Zoomstyle tour of the Mt. Carlton mine, the ‘tradies’ set to work solving problems and making things move, just as they would in the workplace.

Students explored

pneumatic mechanics with compressed airflow, honed their drawing skills in practical boiler making, and flicked the switch in auto-electrics, wiring lights on vehicles, and reading electrical diagrams.

All are valuable trade skills needed in the big wide world.

Our high schoolers worked with current Evolution Mining apprentices to gain valuable knowledge into a practical future after the classroom.

Home Hill students Jackson Cooke and Shae Scalia said the experience was an excellent opportunity to further their career aspirations.

“We learned about pneumatics, electricity, fitting and drawing, and how to apply all that practically,”

Hearing from the apprentices on the day was a valuable insight.

“It’s been pretty good getting their perspectives of the mining,” Shae said.

“It’s great, apprenticeshipwise, with fitting and trades.”

The hands-on activities were a welcome opportunity to learn as if they were on the job.

“It’s good to have some practical activities, so you can see what you’re more interested in, and then have a better idea of what you want to do when you get a job,” Jackson added.

“I’m interested in the mines now. I’m thinking of electrical engineering; it was good to have a go at the electrical activities.”

Hayden Menso LEARNING about the environment and celebrating the area we live in is a fundamental aspect of Maidavale State School.

The young learners have begun a Junior Landcare Program, partnering with Lower Burdekin Landcare to learn about environmental sustainability.

Planting ten new native trees on Friday 30th October, students learned about the growing process; planting trees, fertilising, mulching, and watering.

The hands-on experience taught them all about caring for the environment and sustainability.

Maidavale State School Principal Damien Pressley said the day marked the start of a long-term school plan.

“We have a vision for a good reputation for sustainability and educating students about reuse, recycle, and reducing waste.”

The program will help lay the foundation for further years.

“We want to establish a positive culture for learning and life, and create positive outlooks for wellbeing and learning,” Mr Pressley said.

The experience is a collaboration between the school, Landcare, and NQ Dry Tropics and will add to its

learning offerings.

“Over the next three to five years, we’re looking at setting specific gardens, growing a sensory trail, and building on our fruit orchard,” Mr Pressley said.

There are also plans for a new outdoor learning centre with a garden and a Buddy Bench.

Student Jacob Marshall Morrissey-Stewart said planting the trees was a fun activity for all the students to do together.

“We learned about crushing the pot and taking out the plant and putting on fertiliser. It was good fun.”

Trainee nurse inspired to help dialysis patients Jazzmin Eckel’s father, Brendan was on renal dialysis for 16 years. Now, inspired by the nurses at Home Hill Hospital and the care he received, she is following in their footsteps.

FOR twenty-three year old Jazzmin Eckel, spending time with the nurses in the renal dialysis unit of the Home Hill hospital was just a regular part of her childhood, one she looks back on with fond memories.

Her dad had been receiving life-saving renal dialysis since she was just three months old.

She remembers playing with the nurse’s children during school holidays and the amount of time she got to spend with her father, Brendan.

“He started doing dialysis not long after I was born, he had kidney failure when I think I was only three months old,” shares Jazzmin, relaying the story with her mother, Yvette.

Following a motorcycle accident in 1994, Brendan was lucky to be alive at the consequence of several lifechanging health problems, the full extent of which would be exposed over the next four years.

The accident shattered his leg, triggering four heart attacks on the way to the hospital where he was in a controlled coma and intensive care for four weeks.

Two years after recovering from the accident, Brendan was diagnosed with osteomyelitis, an infection of the bone triggered by the extent of his broken leg.

Jazzmin Eckel – Student Nurse “I’ve realised as I’ve gotten older, that would be debilitating just sitting there having to be attached to a machine all day. Growing up, they always made it fun.”

For Brendan, the timeconsuming process of leaving the family home in Ayr to spend hours attached to a haemodialysis machine was a regularity he underwent multiple times a week.

Jazzmin says that the dialysis nurses and other patients in Home Hill Hospital became the Eckel’s extended family.

“Pretty much half of his week he’d be there, so they were family. You hang out with them every day, almost,” she says.

“So many people don’t know what dialysis is and

This infection then affected his kidneys and eyesight, and his leg had to be amputated.

“He was seriously sick with the infection and was convinced that once he had his leg removed and went on dialysis his life would improve, he had a positive attitude right from the beginning,” says his wife, Yvette.

“He was in a wheelchair with no sight and one leg, and he could build a picket fence, he was out welding, he got a builders licence, nothing really stopped him.”

“If you said to him that he couldn’t do it, he’d go out and prove you wrong. He had no fear of getting in and trying anything.

After receiving a kidney transplant that was functional for four years, he returned to dialysis three times a week, spending a year travelling to Townsville before a coveted spot opened up at the Home Hill facility.

“Our lives kind of revolved around travelling to Townsville,” says Yvette.

“They were then able to fit him into Home Hill which was a blessing because it freed up me having to lose time from work and Jazzmin losing time from school,” she says.

In contrast to the atmosphere in the Townsville facility, she says the dialysis unit in Home Hill became its own community.

“Everybody that was in the room when he was dialysing, they all became really close friends because they all had the same experiences,” says Yvette.

“It wasn’t just the nurses; it was the others on the machines that were a part of his family as well.”

Jazzmin is now pursuing a career in nursing, inspired by the nurses at Home Hill and the impact they had had on her family.

so much. They were there through everything.”

“They were our family, they were our friends, and it just made me think that I’d love to be that for someone else.

To be able to do my part and help other people get the care that he received.”

Currently studying at James Cook University in Townsville, she will soon be returning to the Home Hill Hospital for a practical component of the course, seven years after her father’s passing.

She says that returning to the hospital will undoubtedly be an emotional experience, but one that she’s looking forward to.

She says that the lack of access to renal dialysis facilities faced in regional Australia is a heartbreaking issue, one that needs to be talked about and addressed.

“I feel like the main issue is the qualification of staff and getting those qualified nurses to regional areas, as well as more funding for more machines and a bigger

renal unit.”

“The only way that someone can get access to dialysis is to wait for a spot to open up and that only happens when someone moves away, passes away or if there is another chair added to the unit.”

“I just think I’d love to do that; I’d love to help people get the care that they need and that they deserve. It shouldn’t just be limited to people in big cities.”

Movember returns for men’s health The leading organisation changing the conversation about men’s health is back for Movember, with people of the Burdekin encouraged to fundraise and raise awareness of prostate and testicular cancer and men’s mental health.

Marina Trajkovich THE TIME of year to don a moustache is back this Movember, as men grow out their upper lip facials for a cause.

While many may be aware of the movement and embrace it as an opportunity to rock a new look, the global organisation is run by a worldwide team of passionate individuals raising awareness and creating programs that address men’s physical and mental health.

By sporting a moustache for November, you are contributing to the broader conversation that supports men with testicular and prostate cancer and encouraging men to talk about their mental health to curb high suicide rates.

Participants are encouraged to start the month of November clean-shaven and to let their mo grow throughout the month to raise money for the organisation.

Movember invites men and women to host a ‘Mo-ment,’ an event virtual or otherwise that can raise money for the cause.

Other ways to get involved include the Move for Movember fundraiser, raising money by committing to run or walk 60 km over the month, representative of the 60 men we lose to suicide every hour across the world.

This year, the pandemic has made things incredibly challenging, adding strain to people’s mental health and distancing us from our peers.

Calls to suicide prevention hotline Lifeline rose by 25% this year as a result of pandemic related stresses.

“If there’s ever been a time to embrace Movember and shed those lockdown beards, it’s now, in 2020. It’s been an incredibly difficult year for men, which makes this year’s campaign

our most important, yet,” says Movember’s Australian Country Director Rachel Carr.

“Research conducted by Movember shows us the effects of the pandemic on men’s mental health, in particular, is concerning and is still far from over. Job losses, relationship stresses and social isolation are taking a toll.”

She says that in addition to supporting the organisation, getting involved in fundraising activities can be a great way to connect with colleagues and friends, encouraging men to talk about what they are experiencing.

“Signing up for Mo-season is also a great way to stay connected within your social circles, it’s been shown that supporting others can improve your wellbeing,” she says.

“Every donation, no matter how small adds up.”

Money donated to Movember goes into men’s cancer research programs and trials as well as supporting their suicide prevention programs around the world.

Home Hill grower Panikos Spyrou (pictured) has replaced some of the irrigation infrastructure on his farm dating back to the 1970s.

Small victory in a difficult year for Burdekin farmer Third-generation cane farmer Panikos Spyrou can’t help smiling as he watches water running down the furrows of a mung bean crop on his Home Hill farm.

THE thin, shiny ribbon snaking its way to the end of the furrow represents a small success towards the end of a year jam-packed with frustration, road-blocks and seemingly insurmountable obstacles.

His “annus horribilis” began with a failed concrete pipe sending a jet of water high into the sky from the middle of a semi-mature crop of cane.

That put the irrigation regime for the enterprise’s two neighbouring properties, the “Hanson Farm” and the “Patane Farm”, out of action for three long, baking-hot weeks and cost him dearly... in repairs as well as lost production.

It was the final straw in a series of failing pumps across the family properties managed

by Panikos – north and south of the Burdekin River.

That was in early 2019, and, by the time the pumps had been patched up, or replaced, the busy end of the year was looming large.

Harvesting, ploughing out and preparing to plant fallow crops all needed to be done and, in the background, there was still the problem of the less-than-adequate irrigation infrastructure on the “twin farms” running through his mind.

Panikos got a glimpse of the problems hidden underground when the failed pipe was unearthed and inspected.

What was a 300mm pipe when it was installed was now effectively reduced to a 200mm pipe because of an accumulation of ferrous oxide in the pipe deposited by the mineral-rich bore water running through it for the past 50 years.

To counter that, Panikos decided to run a pipe from the patched-up main to a line fed from another bore to improve water distribution.

With his wife and son still in Cyprus after a family wedding, Panikos made what he

thought would be a quick trip to Cyprus to bring them home, comfortable with the situation on the farm because he had a plan to fix those persistent irrigation problems.

Then COVID-19 happened.

Cyprus reported its first case on 9 March, then on 21 March, all flights were cancelled.

It got worse, because, on 31 March, the country was locked down against the pandemic and nobody was allowed to leave their house without a permit.

Panikos said their family of three (Mum, Dad and six-year-old son) were staying in a unit that had been his in-laws’ refugee apartment when the Turkish occupation began in the north of Cyprus, in 1974.

A six metre by four metre bedsit, it was to be the boundary of their existence for 92 days.

“Even to buy groceries, I had to text the local police station to get an approved exit permit to leave the house,” Panikos said.

“Without it, I would have been arrested and fined.”

He said while it was difficult to keep his six-year-old occupied, the period of enforced isolation served to draw the family even more closely together.

Meanwhile, the farming business needed attention.

In addition to accounting, banking and cashflow-management tasks, Panikos was working away on his Best Management Practice accreditation to meet compliance obligations.

Then, NQ Dry Tropics Project Officer Michael Hobbs called to tell Panikos his application to participate in a project aimed at increasing his irrigation efficiency had been successful.

The first step would be a property inspection, and, from his concrete “bunker” in Limassol, Cyprus, Panikos conducted Michael on a virtual tour of his farms.

Then, after a bit of negotiation using Facebook Messenger, Panikos’ plans followed.

Carefully hand-drawn, they were detailed schematics of all the irrigation infrastructure, which together with a host of photographs arranged in a precise order, explained the situation to Michael and the technical advisers.

The information was relayed to AgriTech Solutions in Ayr for them to begin the process of developing an Irrigation Management Plan Meanwhile, Panikos, forced to travel alone, was able to leave Cyprus on one of the few flights available via alternative carriers and numerous alternative countries when restrictions were finally eased slightly.

After compulsory isolation in Brisbane, Panikos eventually arrived home in June, and embarked on his “mission impossible”.

Once the plan was developed, and Panikos was back on the farm, it was more or less just a matter of fitting it together.

But there were surprises along the way, particularly when they dug up what they thought was old, redundant pipe… only to find it full of fresh water coming from the current network.

They had unearthed long-forgotten additions to the network added bit by bit by generations of previous farmers as opportunity and finance had allowed them to expand.

The work on the new infrastructure to service each farm was completed only weeks ago.

Two independent systems, they can be linked, to provide redundancy in an emergency.

The work is the first step in a longer-term plan that will eventually result in automation of the irrigation to realise maximum water and energy savings.

Already, the enterprise is predicted to

reduce its energy bill from pumping by about one-third and by eliminating those disused links and branches, water wastage will also be eliminated, but Panikos believes the best is yet to come as the system is refined.

A pump wasting energy because it is causing cavitation at the foot of the bore will be replaced, scheduling will be further improved using in-field soil moisture sensors and crop modeling software called Irrigweb, old pipes will be replaced, variable frequency drives will be considered for each pump and then he will be able to tackle the question of automation.

Every step of the way will save more time spent operating the irrigation system, as well as water and energy. This will result in less water and Dissolved Inorganic Nitrogen leaving the farm into waterways leading to the Great Barrier Reef.

Panikos said the real benefit of the support through NQ Dry Tropics was not the modest amount of funding offered as assistance to implement some of the changes, it was the one-on-one advice and support in developing the Irrigation Management Plan, ““More efficient irrigation means my farm is more sustainable and resilient,” he said.

Panikos said the Irrigation Management Plan, along with his Nutrient Management Plan and Pest Management Plan, could be complicated and expensive to implement, but well worth it in the long term.

“Each step requires careful cashflow management, so, basically, I have to pace myself a bit,” he said.

The Reef Alliance - Burdekin Cane program is funded by the partnership between the Australian Government’s Reef Trust and the Great Barrier Reef Foundation.

Operations Maintenance Officer About us: Lower Burdekin Water (LBW) is a Category 2 Water Authority and a Water Service Provider responsible for replenishing the groundwater resources in the Burdekin Delta. We own and operate extensive infrastructure to supply water throughout our authority area for aquifer recharge and irrigation. Our authority area contains approximately 42,000 hectares of irrigated agriculture.

About the role: Reporting to the Operations Supervisor, you will plan, carryout, report and document maintenance activities on all machines, ancillary equipment and infrastructure. This will include condition inspections and condition monitoring activities, maintenance intervention work, both preventative and ad-hoc including breakdown repairs. You will be responsible for the running and general upkeep of the workshops and workshop equipment, managing the workshop consumables, tools and stock levels and assist in planning and organisation of external maintenance service providers where and when required.

This role also includes operational activities as required such as operation, control and monitoring of water distribution and aquifer recharge scheme on scheduled weekends in accordance with LBW’s weekend rostering program, meter reading and investigate and resolve customer queries and complaints.

The ideal candidate will have or the ability to acquire: • Relevant trade qualifications (Electrician, Fitter and Turner, Boilermaker, Mechanic, etc).

• General construction induction card (white card).

• C class drivers licence.

Wednesday Ladies Results A stableford event was held last Wednesday sponsored by Selections many thanks, the Overall winner was Debbie Searle second Patricia Schlieff other place getters were Sandra Wight, Lorna Gray, Bev Andrews, Kerry Mann and Wendy Baker.

Forty four players took to the course for our popular Four Ball Event, the winning team was Michael Stanley and Rube Chappell second were Dave Edwards and Brett White third were the old timers John Mau and Hockey Vernon.

Friday Veterans Results.

Well everyone must have mowed their lawns during the week with fifteen players last Friday mostly men and the winner was Gerald Henaway on seventeen points second was Les Shoobert on sixteen points, third was Doug Lena on fifteen point and after a count back for fourteen points it was Allen Clutterback fourth and Neale Mahoney fifth, the ladies also required a count back with two players on nineteen points and it was Wendy Baker first and Winsome Therlfall second.

What a game! Gary Nosworthy and Mick McCloskey had

a narrow win over Ross McLaughlin and Glen Woodford, in an epic encounter that had everything.

The lead seesawed throughout the contest, the skips at different times were looking more nervous than a turkey on Thanksgiving Eve, then a lucky shot would boost them, and they were back in the contest.

After winning the B Pairs semi final, Gary and Mick will face Vince Beitia and Wayne Coonan in the B pairs final on Sunday at 1:30pm In the club triples on Sunday, Wayne Coonan put in a super consistent exhibition of lead bowls to set up the win for his teammates, Steve Nellestein and Tony Bayliss over the trio of Peter Henderson, Hugh Montgomery and Merv Wilshere.

In the other triples championship match, the trio of Simon Griggs, Kev Collinson, and Chris Griggs shot out to what looked like an insurmountable lead at the halfway mark, only for Ray Panecassio to put the game back on track for his team mates Vince Beitia and Leo Kenny, and drive home a positive winning edge that cut through with a win on the last end.

In other matches on Sunday, Dave Sheehan and Gary Nosworthy decided that it was the day to perform, setting up a win over Con Sexton and Doug Robins.

Nev Dickinson and Len Feeney put in a performance full of poise and finesse, to defeat Jamie Woods and Alan Garioch.

Norm Storrie and Joe Yipanazar combined to defeat Doug Kiehne and Mick McCloskey in a dominant display.

Brandon Clay Target Club

The October monthly shoot for the Burdekin Clay Target Club was held as a day and a half event with the competition starting at 1.00pm on Saturday afternoon 10th October.

First up on the program was a 25 pair Double Rise Graded Sweeps event. AA Grade money went to Wayne Cislowski with 48/50 followed by Benji Micallef on 47/50. In A Grade, Andrew Bergin was the best with 45/50 and Phil Russell took our second on 41/50.

Steve DelleBaite shot 41/50 for the B Grade win from Michelle Russell on 40/50. In C Grade, Dale Collinson was the winner with 33/50 with Pedro LeBlowitz taking second with 31/50.

Event Two was a 25 target Pointscore Graded Cash Trophy event. Wayne Cislowski started his weekend off well taking the AA Grade prize money with 74/75. Phil Russell was the best of the A Graders with 73/75 and Steve DelleBaite showed the B Graders the way taking first with 70/75. John Calligaro was the C Grade winner with 58/75.

An old style event in a Walk Up was the last event Saturday afternoon. The AA Grade winner was Benji Micallef with 8/10. Alan Lord and Peter Delle Baite both shot 6/10 to share A Grade. Michelle Russell had the best score in the event which gave her the B Grade first place cash with 9/10.

Saturday night saw a few more competitors arrive for the championship events on offer. First off was the 25 target Burdekin DalPonte Electrical & Airconditioning Night Double Barrel Championship. Overall and AA Grade went to Alex Scalia with a score of 63/63

after a 38 target shoot off.

George McLees was the A Grade winner with 44/45.

B Grade went to the inform Michelle Russell on 22/25 and Dale Collinson was the best of the C Graders on 19/25.

George McLees made a clean sweep of the A Grade Championships taking out first after a very short shoot off with a final score of 24/27. Pedro LeBlowitz shot well to take out B Grade with 22/30 and Dale Collinson was having a great day, taking out C Grade with 18/25.

Sunday saw more shooters turning up. The first event on Sunday was a 25 target Single Barrel Chair event sponsored by Peter Delle Baite. Competitors get a chance to shoot from a chair as our Wheelchair shooters do. AA Grade first went to Matthew Carty with 24/25 and Wayne Cislowski shot 27/30 after a shoot off to take second. Lui Populin shot 23/25 to take out A Grade from Aaron Lemphers on 21/25.

John Kinnimonth took out first in B Grade with 21/26 after a shoot off from Josh Delle Baite on 20/26. John Cerqui was the C Grade winner with 20/25 and John Calligaro second with 18/25.

Event Seven for the weekend was a 50 target Burdekin Malpass Hotel Double Barrel Championship. The Overall and AA Grade winner was Tony Caruso with 85/85 after a 35 target shoot off. Aaron Lemphers was the A Grade winner with 84/85 after the shoot off with Tony for the overall medal. B Grade winner was John Kinnimonth on 48/50. Dale Collinson continued his winning way taking out C Grade with 45/50.

Next up on the program was a 25 target Double Barrel Handicap Cash Trophy event.

First went to Aaron Lemphers with 33/33 from Tony Caruso second on 32/33. Third place went to Benji Micallef with 25/26.

thursday 05 november 2020 was a 25 target Pointscore Graded sweeps event. Tony Caruso was the AA Grade winner with the only 75/75.

Michael Zabala was second with 74/75. In A Grade, Alan Lord, Brontie Rea and Mick McGill all shot 72/75 to share the cash. John Kinnimonth was the winner of B Grade with 66/75 and Josh Delle Baite was second with 65/75. C Grade saw John Cerqui crowned the winner after shooting 62/75 with Lynda Potter second with 60/75.

The club will be holding the November shoot this Sunday 8th. The competition will start at 9.00am with some great prizes up for grabs.

I have never seen better competition than today. Kitty was touched and moved many times in one game and the lead was changed continually.

Home Hill Junior Cricket

Wickets were hard to come by for the Under 11 bowlers last Friday, in fact only 1 wicket was taken in the whole game. Perry Munro took the honors with his figures of 1 for 3 runs. Top scorers this week were Aiden Butler and Rowen Petersen who both scored 11 runs each.

It was a different story in the Under 14s where there were nine ducks and ten others who failed to reach double figures.

The stand outs with the bat this week were Salvatore Cardillo on 45 not out and Adam Camer who scored 35, also unbeaten.

Kailan Tustin had a great time in the field taking 3 wickets for only 8 runs and grabbing 2 catches also. He is a magnet to the ball already taking 6 catches so far this season.

Our two teams playing in the Townsville competitions have now moved onto one day formats so it was an early start for them both on Saturday morning. The Under 13s compete in the Haidee Birkett Plate Blue which is a 30 over competition and their first game was against Brothers at Ignatius Park College. They put up a valiant fight but went down by

a heartbreaking 3 runs to their opponents. Sienna Lago was 13 not out and Perry Munro was caught for 10 runs after hitting 2 fours. The wickets were shared between three bowlers, Leo Olditch, 2/13 and Ethan Pengelly and Jarvis Dowson with 1/5 each.

Our Under 15s game was a 40 over match so a 7.30am start was necessary to be finished for the afternoon games on the same fields. This meant a very early departure from the Burdekin to arrive in Townsville by 7am for a warmup before our game against Brothers.

Early mornings and teenage boys arenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t a good combination so we took a bit to get started in the field, enabling their first four batters to retire before we took our first wicket. With our slow start we let Brothers reach a total of 8 for 199 off their 40 overs. Corey Heidke was our best bowler with 2 wickets for 22 runs off 6 overs and Thomas Cardillo, who was on loan from our Under 13 team took 2 catches.

We fell 6 runs short of their total, getting bowled out in the last over. Four of our upper/ middle order batters made respectable scores but werenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t supported by the rest of the team. Nicholas Pengelly was our highest scorer this week with 44 runs, closely followed

by Corey Heidke on 41. Nate Di Bartolo scored a very handy 33 off 34 balls and Rian Berryman was the last one dismissed on 23 after coming back in at the end after opening the innings and retiring earlier.

The remaining seven batters could only muster up 15 runs between them. Some work to be done in the nets this week and next as there are no Under 15 games this weekend because of the Northern Zone Under 14 Championships.

punt up the field that was quickly snuffed out by the advancing Luke Mottin. The game remained scoreless at the half time break.

In the second half Burdekin continued to press hard looking for the all-important first goal. They were winning the individual duels across the park and were rewarded with a goal in the 59th minute. Tarryn Smith was put in behind the Wulguru defence once more and this time he slotted the ball past the keeper and into the back of the net to the applause of the travelling Burdekin supporters. Fifteen minutes later Simon Scuderi doubled the lead when he bundled the ball over the line from close range after a free kick taken close to the half way line.

Burdekin then controlled the game well until full time to win the 3rd Division Grand Final for the first time since 2015 in a great team effort.

Last Friday evening the Burdekin Youth team went up against Rebels in an exciting Grand Final encounter.

Rebels finished the regular season in 1st place and were yet to taste defeat this season so a strong performance was needed from the Panthers if

they were going to take home the trophy. Burdekin started the match very much on top, having a lot of possession in the first half and creating a series of chances with smart play from midfield however the Panthers were unable to turn any of these chances into a goal.

In the second half, Burdekin once again started strongly with Ryan Scodellaro finding the back of the net in the 47th minute to put the Panthers ahead 1-0. The Burdekin boys continued to pile the pressure on Rebels and were rewarded with another goal from Ryan Scodellaro in the 58th minute. Rebels started to build momentum towards the end of the game however they were matched by solid defensive performances from Connor Brown, Matthew Walker & Jarrod Camer and were unable to score.

The match finished 2-0 and Burdekin were rewarded for their fantastic efforts throughout the year to take home the Youth Men Championship.

The Under 15s Grand Final kicked off at 8am on Saturday morning against SES. The Panthers started well and had a good first half,

with Sebastian Mio scoring a header after 20 minutes and then finishing off a good move involving Blake Walker and Lucas Gabiola. Burdekin looked comfortable leading 2-0 at half time but then let SES back into the game when they scored mid-way through the second half. With eight minutes to go SES had a player sent to the sin bin and a couple of minutes later the Panthers Jack Gimson received a red card. To add to the drama a SES player was also red carded just before the final whistle, the teams finishing with ten and nine players respectively. At the end of the game the SES coach and some officials got involved with the SES coach was shown a yellow card!

Burdekin Tyre Service Reserves have one more game this season. The Minor Premiers meet Mareeba in the NQ Championship on November 7.

The 42nd Season of Delta cleaners Night Soccer is now into Week 7 and the first of the six graded rounds. After those have been played the semi-finals will be played on 8th December and the Grand Finals will be held on Friday 11 December.

A day to remember Hayden Menso

A TRIUMPHANT day was had on and off the track on Saturday 31st October at the Burdekin Race Club.

Saturday’s sellout Scotty’s Memorial Derby Day marked a much-anticipated return to the racing scene.

With hundreds relishing the chance to get their fashions on, catch up with friends, and of course, take a punt at the five local races, the day was enjoyed by all.

Although COVID restrictions limited crowds, racegoers took trackside for the inaugural Memorial Day for Justin Scott, the Home Hill man who went missing in floodwater at Groper Creek in 2019.

The final race of the day was also named in his honour.

patrons, but racing was back in style after several patronlight meets in past months.

Race One was taken out

by Hershier, with Norweigan Wood in second and Flash Fox in third.

Race Two won by debut horse Keighley Sun, owned and trained by Burdekin Race Club President Rocky Gudge, with Arte Et Marte in second and Clout in third.

Race Three saw Molongle Magic with the win, Our Recipe in second, and Palladian in third.

Race Four was taken out by Le Drama, with Martial Art in second and Drumbeat’s Choice third.

Race Five, the Justin Scott Memorial, was taken out

by Yankee Tango, with Tavi Mcbride (NZ) and Grey Top trailing in second and third, respectively.

THREE GRAND FINAL WINS

by Cyclops IT HAS been another big weekend for the Burdekin Panthers. Three Grand Finals played, three Grand Finals won! On Friday night in Townsville, The Third Division Austral Masonry Funkies beat Wulguru 2-0 and the Youth team also won 2-0, against Rebels. Then early on Saturday morning the Under 15s travelled to Townsville and beat SES 2-1.

The Austral Masonry Funkies played Wulguru in the Grand Final at Brolga Park on Friday Night. Unlike previous years Burdekin were not overly affected by injuries

at the business end of the season and fielded arguably their strongest squad of the year. Burdekin dominated the majority of the first half and created a number of chances with through balls in behind the Wulguru defence.

Unfortunately none of these chances could be converted.

Chris Achille went closest when he hit the cross bar and both Luke Cathcart and Adam Mottin also came close but their shots past the advancing keeper went just wide of the post. Wulguru created a solitary chance from an awkward bouncing
