Father Sibi Celebrates 25 Hayden Menso

THE Burdekin Art Society are starting up their new painting classes for the year, inviting primary school-aged students to come along to their studio on MacMillan Street.

President of the Art Society, Luisa Delle Baite says that the art classes are an excellent opportunity for kids to test their creativity.

She helps run the classes along with facilitator Barb Shand.

“We do a variety of painting, watercolour, collage.

It’s mainly just to have fun, we experiment with materials and techniques,” says Luisa.

“Kids love messy activities, and they don’t really do a lot

of painting in the schools, we’ve got a lot of facilities,” she says.

The classes are open to children from kinder to grade seven, running on Tuesday afternoons in their Clubhouse at 154 McMillan Street from 3.30–4.30pm or 4.40–5.40 pm.

The kids experiment with different themes every week with work from the classes exhibited at the end of the year.

“We have different themes every week,” says Luisa.

“They really enjoy it, and I think it’s the social aspect of it with the other kids too.”

ALTHOUGH he has only lived in the Burdekin for the past five years, Father Sibichan Kaibpanblackal of the Burdekin Catholic Churches has become a much-loved member of the community.

The affectionately known Fr Sibi recently celebrated 25 years as a religious priest and will also mark five years as the Sacred Heart Parish administrator in 2021.

Heralding from a religious family in India, Sibi has been involved with the religion for much of his life.

“I was an altar boy, and I read all the books regarding the church. They had a lot of influence over me,” he said.

Migrating to Australia in February 2016, Sibi’s first few months were spent at the Townsville Diocese before relocating to Ayr in May that year.

“This is the only Parish I have been in, in Ayr.” Although it is the only place he has been positioned in Australia, Sibi said the Burdekin has been a welcoming place to begin his Australian life.

“The Burdekin is a good place. The people are very friendly, welcoming. I feel part of the Burdekin; I don’t feel like an outsider,” he said.

“To go straight from India to here, it was a massive, big difference. But it was not a shocking thing for me, because the people here are so good. I’ve never felt a foreigner.”

As Administrator, Fr Sibi oversees the Catholic churches’ operations in Ayr, Home Hill, Giru, and Clare.

“We have our masses, and I also go to schools for religion classes. Then, there are the administrative things, the running of the parish.

Weddings, funerals, baptisms.”

The calm and soft-spoken man also takes his time to visit ill residents in hospitals and their homes.

“If some people are confined to their houses, they may ask for a priest to go. Even if they don’t ask for me, I will go and see people,” he said.

Meeting a variety of people regularly, Fr Sibi believes our community’s warmth is unique, whether people attend church frequently or not.

“To connect with the people, I have no issues. I think that the people are welcoming.

“I’m very conscious that I speak English a bit differently because of my accent, but I have no troubles with anyone.

Even the people who come from out of the district, for baptisms or funerals, I feel welcomed. And sometimes I make good friends with those people, and we continue the relations,” he said.

The Burdekin community came together on Friday 22nd January to celebrate the milestones, with a special mass and luncheon at the church and parish hall.

“I was not in favour of a celebration myself,” the humble Father said.

“Then it got out of the can, and some people said it was the culture of the Parish that they celebrate, and it’s a time for them to come together.’

Organised fairly quickly with short notice to the public, Fr Sibi was overwhelmed when almost 150 people turned up to the party.

“It was shocking for me. I didn’t expect so many people to come, and it was a long weekend,” he said.

“We had a mass in the church, and then some food at the hall, and with good music.

Things went well.”

THEY may be walking through the school gates for the first time this year, but two students are keeping a family tradition alive.

Clare State School is celebrating teaching three generations of the Booth family, as two new little learners, Kenny and Alyssa, have begun Prep this week.

Although it is not uncommon for small regional communities to see multiple generations attend one school, this family has had all of its children educated in Clare’s primary school classrooms.

The farming family said they are

proud to continue the tradition of small school education close to home.

“It’s just how it goes here,” father Kurt said.

“For a couple of years, we as brothers were all here together. Now it’s the same for our kids.”

“The best thing about school when we started was that the uniform and shoes were optional,” he said.

The first in the line to attend the school, mother and grandmother Anna Booth, said things were very different when she attended.

“There were 90 to 100 kids attending the school then. That’s back in the days when the ag college and the weir were being built,” she said.

“There were lots of young farming

families who owned small properties, and their kids came to the school.”

Clare State School Principal Troy Patti said it means a lot to educate families through the years.

“It’s always nice to see the families return. We’ve had some other kids come through the school who are third generation in the area too,” he said.

“It makes things funny in the classroom. Being cousins, they were organising a sleepover at each other’s houses just the other day.”

Although the family’s current students make up a third of the school’s 19 students, Mr. Patti said it is an integral part of the community.

“We’re a very proud school. We

might be small, but we’re very proud to serve the community here.”

With six cousins attending at once, there is an opportunity to personalise the learning in and out of the classroom.

“We took a trip to the family’s farm last year, as part of our science unit.

The kids learned about different farming practices, and it was very exciting for them. They still talk about that day even now,” Mr. Patti said.

There are hopes to keep the tradition going well into the future.

“I have ten grandchildren now, and I hope they’ll all come to the Clare school,” Anna said.

DWIJA KARUMANCHI HAS MADE THE MOVE FROM BRISBANE TO THE BURDEKIN, FILLING A CRUCIAL NEED FOR FEMALE DOCTORS IN HOME HILL.

Home Hill welcomes first female GP in six years Marina Trajkovich WHEN Dr Dwija Karumanchi heard that Home Hill’s only medical practice was struggling to find female doctors, she was excited to rise to the challenge.

The Brisbane-based doctor had been looking for work after completing her PESCI certification, an examination process allowing her to practice medicine in Australia, when she recognised a familiar face – Dr Surat Tata from Home Hill Surgery.

There was a full-time position available working alongside Dr Tata, and she jumped at the opportunity to move to the Burdekin.

“Doctor Tata and I went to the same medical school in India, we were friends,” says Dr Karumanchi.

The 33-year-old made the anticipated move this week, with her husband and four-year-old daughter.

She is looking forward to not only providing a vital service to the community, but the opportunity to better serve female patients in the area.

“I had heard so many good things from Dr Tata about the people here, this community,” she says.

Dr Karumanchi specialises in women’s health and contraception and has a Masters in Health Services Management.

“I am very involved with women’s health, even in general practice, I’ve seen many patients to do with women’s health and sexual health. I did my specialisation in contraception and intrauterine devices as well,” says Dr Karumanchi.

She says that before landing the full time position, Dr Tata had been looking for a female doctor for the last six years, struggling to fill the role at the detriment of female patients.

Hearing this was a strong motivator, encouraging her to make the move to the town.

“For me personally that’s why I wanted to come here,” she says.

“I am really looking forward to that because I realise that there’s no female doctor here. It’s an opportunity for me too,” says Dr Karumanchi.

“I am feeling really excited; I love seeing female patients, especially with sexual health, they feel more comfortable seeing a female doctor,” she says.

Originally from Tiruvuru, on India’s central east coast, both Dr Dwija and Dr Sarat studied medicine at the Maharajah’s Institute of Medical Sciences in Vizianagaram, India.

“I was interested in being a doctor from childhood, my dad says I would always answer doctor when asked what career I would love to choose!

“When I came to know more about the profession I can say it’s a rewarding job. As a doctor I see miracles everyday and whenever I see happiness in my patients face that’s a great hapiness for me,” says Dr Karumanchi.

She met her partner in India, a microbiologist living in Australia after the pair’s families had proposed an arranged marriage.

It was an ideal match that saw her moving to Melbourne in 2014 with her new husband before living in Brisbane for six years.

Now, she looks forward to getting to know the community and settling into life in Home Hill with her family, a change in pace from city life.

When she’s not treating patients at Home Hill Surgery, she hopes to join the Burdekin’s tennis and golf clubs.

“I’m going to start them now! I know tennis, but not golf. I’d like to do these activities in Home Hill.”

More women needed in rural medicine In Australia, women are still outnumbered by men in medicine, a statistic that becomes heightened in regional communities.

According to 2016 data from the Australian Government Department of Health, women make up 40.7% of the medical workforce.

Dr Sandra Mendel, a GP and medical academic in the field of rural medicine at Charles Sturt University, says that a lack of female doctors negatively impacts regional communities.

She is currently working on a new program that specifically trains young medical students for positions in regional Australia, part of the Charles Sturt Joint Program in Medicine.

“It is no secret that regional, rural and remote areas of Australia need more doctors. But something we don’t hear about as often is how this GP shortage is more likely to disadvantage women in these areas,” says Dr Mendel.

“All women should have access to a female clinician, regardless of where they live. There are numerous aspects of wellbeing that many women would prefer and be more comfortable to discuss and manage with a female doctor.

“Having access to appropriate healthcare means a patient is more likely to seek care earlier and have better health outcomes,” she says.

How healthy is the Burdekin’s doctor to patient ratio?

According to the World Health Organisation, a healthy doctor to citizen ratio is 1:1000.

The Burdekin’s current published population is 17,077, whose health needs are looked after by 18 doctors, a ratio of 1: 942. The Burdekin has a healthy number of doctors for its population.

WEARABLE ART CREATIVES INVITE DESIGN SUBMISSIONS

The North Australian Festival of Arts is the perfect opportunity for budding creatives to show off their design work.

TOWNSVILLE’S North Australian Festival of Arts will be returning in June 2021, for a month of cultural festivities, entertainment and artistry.

One organisation on display will be the Wearable Art Creatives, (WAC) who this year, are inviting other artists and designers from around Australia to submit their work for a wearable art showcase.

The organiser of the exhibition and founder of WAC, Christina Papadimitriou says that the festival will be a great opportunity for emerging artists in the Burdekin and North Queensland to showcase their design skills.

“I know there are many creatives living in the Burdekin and I would love to see them apply to be part of WAC this year,” says Christina.

“It’s a fantastic opportunity to showcase their artwork to a large audience through a highly entertaining stage performance being held as part the North Australian Festival of Arts in Townsville later in the year,” she says.

Wearable art as a genre can encompass anything from wearable sculptural pieces, to the versatile use of textiles techniques and embellishments adorned on the body.

“Wearable art is sculpture for the body. It occupies an exciting and innovative space that fuses many art forms and techniques, from the use of recycled or high-tech materials and industrial design, through to millinery, sculpture and traditional craft and weaving techniques,” says Christina.

“When you combine it with avant-garde hair and makeup you get something truly amazing,” says Christina.

WAC will be working with selected designers, supplying models as well as a hair and makeup team to create unique looks for the show.

This year, the WAC is inviting submissions under the categories of Society, Environment, or Avant-garde.

Christina says that it’s also a good platform for community groups and schools with a creative streak to get involved, stressing that anyone with an artistic vision can submit their design.

Entrants can submit work as individuals or in design teams of up to five artists.

The cut-off date for applications, which invites designs rather than completed work is March 5th.

PROUD MOMENT FOR NEWEST NURSE Marina Trajkovich CHARTERS Towers raised Colleen Oats is a testament to the old adage; it’s never too late to turn a dream into reality.

The 55-year-old has just begun a graduate nursing position at Home Hill Health Service after completing her nursing degree, something she once imagined would never happen.

“I was actually accepted years ago, after high school, to study nursing at Rockhampton Hospital.

But my dad was pretty strict, and I wasn’t allowed to leave home,” says Colleen.

“I ended up getting married and having kids,” she says.

Colleen sits at her kitchen table at the family cane farm in Fredericksfield, describing how from a young age, she was drawn to the profession.

“I always liked looking after people when they were sick. If anyone had a wound I would fix them, if my sister or brothers had a cold, I would be the one patching them up,” says Colleen.

She recounts how, after marrying, efforts to enrol in a nursing degree were thwarted once again by a controlling first husband.

“My ex-husband wouldn’t allow me to do it. He said we couldn’t afford it and then carried on,” she says.

Now, after leaving her first marriage, and with grown-up children, she says that she has never felt more supported and ready to focus on her new career.

She says that the decision to finally enrol in her nursing degree was a cathartic experience, one she dove into without hesitation.

“It was a relief to finally do what I

was passionate about doing.

“It was the best decision of my life,” says Colleen.

Graduating from Central Queensland University in Mackay in 2019, she felt incredibly proud to be registered as a nurse.

In the future, she would like to do a Masters Degree, specialising in oncology and cancer patients’ care.

She urges anyone considering a career change or a new study avenue, not to let perceptions of age become a barrier.

“Go for it; you can do anything you put your mind to and if it’s what you want to do, do it, don’t let anything hold you back,” says Colleen.

“I also want to say thank you to my husband, Greg. He’s excellent, he’s just very supportive and has encouraged me all the way.”

For 55-year-old Colleen Oats, starting work as a newly registered nurse in Home Hill was an exciting milestone, one she’s looked forward to since she was a little girl.

Golden job opportunities as Ravenswood delivers Hayden Menso EXPANDING for all the right reasons, there will soon be an abundance of golden trades opportunities right on our doorstep.

The recently announced expansion of the Ravenswood Gold Mine, 95km southwest of Ayr, will offer new job opportunities within the trades sector and expand the

region’s economy.

The project expansion is worth $300m and will offer 100 construction jobs and 60 new permanent ongoing jobs.

Resources Minister Scott Stewart recently said the project would help feed the North Queensland economy.

“It’s a real commitment that we’ve got from a local mining industry, a local mining company, who’s investing

back into the community to our local businesses and workers.”

The gold mine is already a popular employment choice, with over 200 working on the site already, many of whom are Burdekin residents who travel to the area to fill various roles.

Ravenswood Gold Operations Manager, Dave McKay, said the majority of

staff were already locals.

“Over ninety percent of our workforce lives in North Queensland; Townsville, Charters Towers, the Burdekin area,” he said.

The mine has already spent $50m in the North, supporting local businesses and offering employment.

“North Queensland has a lot to offer in terms of technical skills, goods, and

services to support the region’s resource industry, and the benefits of the mine’s expansion will pay back into the region and the State,” Mr McKay said.

Some of the jobs up for grabs include boilermakers, fabricators, fitters, maintenance engineers, electricians, welders, and certain apprenticeships.

The expansion will see

the Ravenswood Gold Mine become the largest of its kind in Queensland.

“At full production in a couple of year’s time, we’ll be producing between 200 and 250,000 ounces of gold a year,” Mr McKay said.

Burdekin Netball is back!

EXCITEMENT IS MOUNTING TODAY AS THE SIGN-ON FOR 2021 SEASON OF BURDEKIN NETBALL ASSOCIATION GETS UNDERWAY THIS AFTERNOON. The courts are prepped and the grounds are in pristine condition. 2021 is also the year that the Association will celebrate it’s 51st birthday, having commenced as Home Hill Netball Association in 1970.

Sign-On for Juniors will be held from 5.00pm to 6.00pm for NetSetGo, (Boys and Girls 5–10 years.) and Juniors aged 11–16 years.

“Whilst there will be no games played this afternoon we would still love to see everyone at the courts. We will have our Committee on hand to answer any questions and to help parents fill in a volunteer form for when they may like to help throughout the year, in the canteen etc. We encourage all existing players to come and sign on and to bring a friend along to see how much fun netball can be. We will also have our new Junior dress uniforms available for our Juniors to try on. These will be our new uniforms for players attending carnivals at other associations throughout the year. The order for them must be submitted in a few weeks, so we really need everyone to try them on asap. We also have a new sign-on app and there will be helpers at sign-on for anyone who is having trouble using it” said President, Cara Trindle.

“We welcome you back if you are a regular player. We also welcome anyone new to the district who would like to play our great game and urge all new members to come along and a team will be found for them. Similarly, if a team is short of players, we can allocate those players who sign up on their own. Please let the office know so we can allocate players to teams.”

Those players wishing to play A Grade must attend trials this week and the two weeks following. All former A Grade players, new players and any players from A Reserve or B Grade who are wishing to play at this higher level are required to attend the A Grade trials to enable the selectors to form even teams.

Similarly, it is also important that all teams in A Reserve and B Grade attend gradings to allow those teams to be placed in even divisions.

Gradings will commence next week.

Teams should have their uniform colours confirmed by the Selectors prior to purchasing them.

Senior Sign-On will be from 6.00pm to 7.00pm and A Grade Trials will be held from 7.00pm– 8.30pm.

Burdekin Netball Association will again host the Burdekin Cup Regional Carnival in April with all affiliated juniors eligible to play. Invited to the carnival are teams from Ingham, Townsville, Bowen, Charters Towers and the Whitsundays.

Burdekin teams will reciprocate during the year attending carnivals hosted by other associations.

All Senior players, except A Grade, can sign up individually or in teams.

The Association will also be represented at the Junior State Age carnival to be held in the June/

July holidays as well as many local carnivals at which all members may play. Trials for representative teams will be held on Sunday 21st February, Netball offers a pathway for junior and senior players to strive to reach their highest potential.

Come along and join a fun and friendly environment, make new friends and improve your health and fitness. The Association looks forward to welcoming you.

World Wetlands Day Collaboration Marina Trajkovich NQ Dry Tropics and the Lower Burdekin Landcare Association have been collaborating to revegetate and restore areas of the Burdekin’s famous wetlands, planting trees at Parker’s Lagoon in acknowledgment of World Wetlands Day, on February 2nd.

The day marks the 50th anniversary of the Ramsar Convention, when 1971 in Iran, Australia was one of five founding nations to commit to protecting and conserving the countries wetland habitats.

The Burdekin’s Bowling Green Bay wetlands are internationally recognised under this convention as ecologically important, renowned for its diverse wildlife and fauna.

Day is a fantastic way to acknowledge the beauty and biodiversity of the Burdekin’s wetlands.

“It’s about creating awareness about why they’re so important. I think to understand the extent of the ecological diversity within the Burdekin, it’s quite eyeopening,” says Shakira.

“In the Burdekin, we have hugely significant wetlands, particularly the Ramsar site, Bowling Green Bay but other parts of the Burdekin are equally important.

“A lot of people driving through the Burdekin and even some locals aren’t aware of just how significant and beautiful a lot of these wetlands are, they might only be accessible by private property,” she says.

NQ Dry Tropics have been working alongside the Lower Burdekin Landcare Association, a volunteerled organisation that works

to improve the area’s native vegetation and land management.

The volunteers have been propagating seedlings, collected throughout the region, for planting around select wetland areas, restoring the area by diversifying native plant species, controlling exotic weeds and providing habitats for wildlife.

Keith Kiloh, the president of Lower Burdekin Landcare, has been coordinating volunteers for the project.

“We’re involved in several rehabilitation projects, it’s been a process collecting and learning to propagate the native seeds,” says Keith.

“Whether it’s planting, seed collection, weed busting, anything in the Landcare area, we’re open to volunteers who want to share their expertise, their time and their interest.”

WITH a strong focus on community, the township of Giru will soon be a hub of redevelopment under an action plan from Burdekin Shire Council.

The Giru Community Action Plan is part of the Council’s Our Town, Our Future program, seeking to engage with residents in the shire’s outer communities and improve lifestyle and infrastructure opportunities.

The Giru Action Plan has so far seen quality engagement with residents in two community consultation sessions, where ideas were tabled, and strategic improvements were put on the cards.

Following the sessions, a draft plan was developed to reflect the town’s residents’ needs and aspirations.

Burdekin Shire Council adopted the action plan in its most recent meeting on Tuesday, 19th January, kickstarting a long-term redevelopment project for the area.

Thirteen initiatives have been earmarked within the Action Plan, which will provide various improvements across the local economy, lifestyle opportunities, and convenience for residents.

Initiatives include updating parks and play areas, potential implementation of a historical trail, increasing water pressure, an alternate school bus drop off point, a review of the Giru Landfill opening hours, new public art, and the relocation of the helipad to a non-flood zone.

Initiatives span short, medium, and long term projects and will be facilitated by either Council or the community working group identified from the earlier community consultation sessions.

Funding for various initiatives will be sourced by Burdekin Shire Council or external grants, depending on the nature of each individual project.

Council identified no risks in the plan, proving its primary purpose is to “assist with better alignment of Council Program, budget allocation and advocacy for enhanced services.

It mitigates the risk of a disconnect between Council actions and community expectations.”

The adoption of the Giru Action Plan is set to build a framework for other communities in the shire, as the Our Town, Our Future program continues across the Burdekin in coming years.

FROM WHERE I SIT At 11 am on Wednesday 20 January, Police from the Ayr Road Policing Unit intercepted a vehicle in Jones Street, Ayr. As a result the driver, a 39-year-old Burdekin man, was issued a Notice to Appear for drink driving.

He is due to appear in Ayr Magistrates Court on 22 February.

At 1.05 pm on Thursday 21 January, Police from the Ayr Road Policing Unit intercepted a vehicle on Bruce Highway, Barratta. The driver, a 27-year-old male tourist, was issued a Notice to Appear for unlicensed driving and is due to appear in Ayr Magistrates Court on 22 February.

At 3.40 pm on Thursday 21 January, Ayr Police were conducting investigations into a complaint of theft from a local variety shop in Queen Street when they located a 34-year-old Burdekin man. As a result of these investigations, he was charged with two counts of stealing and released on conditional Police bail to appear in Ayr Magistrates Court on 8 February.

At 7.15 am on Sunday

24 January, Ayr Police intercepted a vehicle on First Avenue, Home Hill. The driver, a 58-year-old Burdekin man, was issued a Notice to Appear for unlicenced driving and is due to appear in Ayr Magistrates Court 22 February.

At 10 pm on Tuesday 26 January, Ayr Police intercepted a vehicle on Kennedy Street, Ayr. The driver, a 20-year-old Burdekin woman, was issued a Notice to Appear for drink driving and obstructing Police, she is due to appear in Ayr Magistrates Court on 22 February.

At 5.20 pm on Thursday 28 January, Ayr Police were approached by a member of the public who made a complaint of assault at a service station near Townsville earlier in the day.

As a result of investigations, a 20-year-old Darling Downs woman was issued a Notice to Appear for common assault and wilful damage and will appear in Ayr Magistrates Court on 22 February.

At 7.30 pm on Friday 29 January, Ayr Police attended a two-vehicle crash in Wickham Street, Ayr. The driver of one vehicle, a 72-year-old

That’s the view from Queensland Police, who have launched a public awareness campaign to explain new regulations which came into effect on Monday, February 1st.

The ‘Stop and Think’ campaign comes after amendments were made to Queensland’s Weapons Act last year, making it an offence to carry an unconcealed gel blaster in public.

Tightening of ownership rules means that penalties for firing a gel blaster at someone without their consent can see users face jail time between three and seven years.

Community concern over shattered responsibility Hayden Menso THERE are growing concerns from Home Hill residents at the lack of responsibility for damaged shopfronts littering the Bruce Highway.

A series of damaged shop windows, which line Eighth Avenue’s southern end, has been earmarked as both a significant safety concern and aesthetic detriment for the town.

The location of the properties in question plays a large fragment of the situation, with shattered glass panes and pieces strewn across the footpath near a busy, newly renovated doctor’s surgery.

The shopfronts are an eyesore for locals, and also travellers coming through the town from Home Hill’s southern end.

Business owner and former councillor, Uli Liessmann, said ownership needs to be

taken before someone is hurt.

“It’s beyond a joke,” he said.

“It is a major safety concern, being right next to the Doctor’s surgery. What if a small child comes running out of there and hurts themselves?”

Mr Liessman, whose own business sits approximately 200 metres from the site in question, said he had received complaints from multiple Home Hill residents about the state of the shopfronts and footpaths.

“The jagged glass is so dangerous. It is disappointing to see a lack of response from someone not doing anything.”

“I just don’t want to see anyone get hurt,” Mr Liessmann said.

The matter’s responsibility seems to lay within the future of local bylaws regarding the upkeeping of shopfronts and public spaces.

“Following this, discussions began with Council’s legal advisors in regard to the exact wording, which has been brought back to Council to be workshopped. The final version of the amendment is yet to be finalised.”

Mr Brennan said that when Council does resolve to propose to make the amendment, it will consult the community to ensure residents have the opportunity to provide feedback on the Local Law amendment.

Are we seeing the end of volunteer organisations?

Dear Editor, On a recent trip home to the Burdekin, the typical North Queensland summer weather was in full display, from Monsoonal rain to daily lightning storms it was a standard summer in the tropics. Growing up in the area I wasn’t surprised to come home to this type of weather. The other thing that didn’t come as a surprise was seeing the same faces helping the community when people faced the challenges of living in the Burdekin region, these men and women were the same faces I grew up with although these days they are older and in a different way tired. At first I believed it was only age that had given them this tired look, however after spending a short time with these iocai iegends it quickly became apparent that there was more to the issue. These local men and women were not just worn down by time, they were starting to struggle with the idea that the very community they had spent decades assisting in disasters and some the darkest times faced by the towns had very obviously taken them for granted.

The community they serve was happily and rapidly calling for assistance like every other cyclone season in the northern parts of Queensland but the dynamic had changed.

It had very obviously become a service expected and almost demanded by the people of the Burdekin, yet the very same community who increasingly rely on the small group of volunteers aren’t prepared to assist the SES or Rural Fires. To me this was disheartening, I grew up around these people, they inspired me and I had been fortunate to learn from and work with these men and women for the first twenty-four years of my life. Back two short years later and there wasn’t a new face in the group, not a single person! To see these heroes of the community trying to juggle the drive they have to help people who are blatantly ungrateful with age prohibiting them from the capabilities they had in their youth was devastating. Yet for over a week of torrential rain I witnessed these same small group of around six men get up early, get into the building at 7am and start work, filling sandbags and going to local houses to tarp roofs and build flood barricades.

I thought that maybe this was isolated to the close knit SES group, however after talking to members of other Volunteer groups in town, it rapidly became an issue that all community groups in the area are facing. SES for example have around thirty personnel on the books but realistically seven that turn up to do the work;

the youngest being late 40’s and the remainder being 65 to 81 years of age, 80% + over the age of retirement shoveling sandbags in the rain and climbing onto and tarping roofs in horrendous weather. How is a region like the Burdekin full of sporting teams, fishing clubs, skiing clubs and numerous social groups of fit people aged from 18–80 struggling to get members to help their local town?

This is what has been troubling me, I spent my holidays trying to lessen the load of these hard working men and women but what are the residents of the Burdekin doing? To me it appears nothing. Demanding a service provided for free while not a single member of that same group wanting to join the team and help. It’s pretty disgusting that this is an attitude that’s become acceptable and it needs to change, and fast, before not only the capability provided by these organistations is gone but also the learned experience and life lessons carried by members. Some who have spent forty years helping this very district.

If reading this made you feel slightly guilty, then you’re part of the problem, but not too late to be part of a solution ensuring volunteer groups stay viable in the future.

Malpass Hotel, Home Hill

Iconic for it’s Friday night music, the Malpass has been a favourite with Home Hill locals since its opening in 1924.

Marina Trajkovich WHEN Phil Campling and wife Sandra Morton from Sydney purchased the Malpass Hotel as an investment business after retiring in 1999, they had no idea the effect the pub, and the town would have on them.

The pair have recently made the permanent move to Home Hill, overseeing the business’s running from a more hands-on role.

“It’s a very personal hotel. That’s probably the biggest thing about it.

We’re part of the community and the community a part of us,” says Phil.

“The community have been very very supportive of us, and we are very supportive of the community,” he says.

“The type of community it is, it’s a very close-knit farming community, everyone knows everybody else, the same locals all the time,” says Sandra.

The iconic pub has been loved by locals for years and is about to reach its one hundred-year anniversary, something Phil and Sandra intend to celebrate with a week of festivities.

The venue was built by Joseph Malpass and his family in 1924, soon becoming one of the town’s most iconic venues.

Phil and Sandra say that during the pub’s long history, it was once considered the upmarket go-to in town.

“After the Second World War, this hotel was where all the teachers and the office workers came and stayed. This was the upmarket hotel back then,” says Phil.

Ceramic plates from that time sit in a cabinet in the pub’s newly renovated restaurant.

More recently, the pub is loved by locals for its cold beer in the public bar and live music, a hit with locals on a Friday night.

“Every Friday night we have live music,” says Phil.

“We have solo artists, the occasional duet,” he says.

“It’s blues; its rock, country, folk we’ve had it all. We have different entertainers all the time coming in,” says Sandra.

Phil and Sandra are proud of the pub’s local focus - and that they are independently owned.

They have played a huge role in supporting the communities sporting teams.

One of the pair’s longest-working staff members, Heather Magatelli, says that the community focus is what makes her love her job.

Making a change from social work, Heather has been managing the pub’s bottle shop for ten years.

WHEN Kevin Chun Tie’s grandfather ‘Chun Tie,’ arrived in Australia, immigrating from Guangzhou, China in 1897, Ayr was merely 15 years old.

He had already lived an incredible life, running a business in Darwin that saw him on a long-distance commute – making numerous six-month return journeys by steamship between the Northern Territory and Hong Kong, selling Chinese products to miners in the Top End. The Australian Gold Rush was in full swing, inviting opportunistic migrants from all over the world.

Three generations later, 66-year-old photographer Kevin has little memory of his grandfather, but still holds his original immigration papers, and has immersed himself in discovering his family’s history.

“You used to need a dictation test to re-enter Australia in those days,” Kevin said.

“I think my grandfather got around that by making a trade deal.”

Chun Tie and his wife Qui Fa then moved to Croyden, where they had ten children.

Two of their eight sons made the move to the Burdekin to start their businesses, Kevin’s father Charlie Tie and Uncle Tommy Tie. Now living in Townsville, Kevin’s family is one of the oldest tracing lineage back to Ayr, and some of the town’s first Chinese migrants.

“There wasn’t really a Chinese community at that time; it was just us, that was it.

“It was pretty different, being around a largely Italian community,” says Kevin.

His father, Charlie Chun Tie soon became a prominent figure in Home Hill, his convenience store and Chinese takeaway restaurant, Shanghai Cafe, the first of its kind in the area.

“We used to have stone fruits, a lolly counter; you name it we’ve got it. The old cafe was long and narrow and in one corner we had a pinball machine and a jukebox.

“We would sell Australian meals and Chinese meals. People used to come over from Ayr to get our meals,” says Kevin.

He reflects on working hard in the shop all day with his two brothers, between school and homework.

“Most of the time, we just lived at the shop. We would go home to sleep, which was just a shed,” says Kevin.

“Dad and I chopped wood for the woodstove, fed the 40 plus chooks and ducks, collected fresh eggs. There were no frozen chickens to barbecue then,” says Kevin.

His Uncle Tommy also became a well-known figure in Ayr, running ‘Tommy Tie’s convenience store on the corner of Graham and Edwards Street.

“We were very enterprising our family, always businessoriented. My uncle set up the first shop opposite the railway station. It was open for the mill workers from early hours to late at night.”

“He ran the store for 60 years and was quite a character in town,” says Kevin.

“Tommy Tie had a charitable nature and did many acts of kindness to those he knew to be in needy circumstances.”

Tommy Tie Park on Graham Street was named after Uncle Tommy by the Rotary Club of Ayr, of which he was a prominent member.

Tommy’s wife, Ruby Ah Moon, was from another Chinese family in town.

“Her family ran another store, she used to serve all the American troops drinks and sandwiches when the war was on,” says Kevin.

Their house, named Thruby sat across from the shop and is still visible to passerby in Ayr. Tommy and Ruby’s son’s Cha rles and Morris also became well-known figures.

Charles became a popular radio announcer for local station 4SB in Kingaroy, Queensland, while Morris was an aircraft mechanic who worked between Papua New Guinea and England before meeting a tragic end.

“He actually crashed into Mount Spec up here; there was a big search for him; it was. Uncle Tommy was going to pick him up, and he never made it,” says Kevin.

“The two daughters Dulcie and Daphne never married; they worked at the shop in Ayr all those years.”

Kevin, now based in Townsville, is rightly proud of his heritage, and of the tremendous efforts his family put in to settling in their new country. Many of the family documents are now housed in the Townsville museum on Banneker Street.

Family Biographies Grandfather Chun Tie and Grandma Qui Fa In 1893 Kevin’s grandpa, Chun Tie immigrated to Darwin from Guangzhou China, where he worked selling Chinese products to miners.

Tommy Tie was known as quite a character in Ayr, charitable and with a big personality. For several decades, he and his wife Ruby ran Tommy Tie’s convenience store in Ayr, popular with locals and American soldiers during the war.

Lily was born in 1921 and came from Hong Kong in 1949 to marry Charlie Tie in Townsville before moving to the Burdekin

We will also be reimagining our playground in 2021 to create a ‘Dreamscape’ for our Junior School and ELC children.

A joyful start to the school year Hayden Menso BURDEKIN Small Schools have been treated to a right start in the classroom, with donated stationery packs for students.

Students of Maidavale State School, Kalamia State School, and other small schools received the packs from the Joyful Foundation, the Townsville-based charity focused on helping

students to succeed in school, enabling them to actively take part in classroom activities.

Maidavale State School Principal Damien Pressley said the donated packs are an appreciated addition to learning resources.

“We have been the lucky recipients for several years of such packs. These packs certainly come in handy with basic supplies such as exercise books, pencil cases,

pencils and erasers, and homework folders.”

Mr Pressley said the school will be opening its new outdoor learning space in line with its anniversary celebrations.

“Later in the year, we will be proudly opening the Joyful Place, as part of our 110 year anniversary, with a Buddy Bench being donated by the Joyful Foundation,” he said.

Bill to repeal “farm-destroying” reef regulations Burdekin growers are getting behind a North Queensland MP’s draft bill to combat destructive reef regulations.

Hayden Menso STICKING up for local farmers, a draft bill to repeal “farm-destroying” reef regulations is gaining momentum with Burdekin growers.

Member for Hinchinbrook, Nick Dametto, recently met with Pioneer Cane Growers Organisation (PCGO) Directors in Ayr to take on first-hand feedback from imperative stakeholders.

“It was great to be able to sit down with PCGO Deputy Chair Dean Sgroi and Director Max Musumeci to discuss what the Bill is proposing. Dean and Max are growers themselves, so I really appreciated their feedback and insights into the challenges that the government’s Reef regulations have put on the industry,” Mr Dametto said.

Recent changes to regulations mean farming is much more rigorously regulated, including the ability to hit farmers with hefty fines if they are in breach of environmental regulations.

Mr Dametto’s draft bill sets out to repeal hefty fines, government powers demanding information from

advisors, and to repeal Reef water quality offsets that will limit crop expansion of sugar cane.

“These Reef regulations that were legislated by Labor in 2019 as amendments to the Environmental Protection Act were completely unnecessary,” Mr Dametto said.

“Our farmers have already made great strides when it comes to reducing their nutrient run off to the Reef, the impact of which is questionable according to Professor Peter Ridd. It is also alarming that the government will have these Big Brother powers to demand information from those that are working with our farmers at any time.”

The regulations have become what Mr Dametto describes as a “gross invasion of privacy,” putting Northern growers in the negative spotlight.

PCGO Deputy Chair Dean Sgroi said recent changes to regulations were a detriment to farmers.

“The industry at large is innovating to improve farming practices. We don’t want to be destroying our own backyard, and our industry brings in an awful lot

to the Reef. We are trying to minimise our impacts on the environment, bearing in mind that any human activity,

no matter what it is, will always have some impact on the environment,” he said.

“Farmers are the real environmentalists. It’s a triple bottom line for us. We’ve got to be sustainable financially, environmentally, and socially.”

Sgroi said the concerns of PCGO surround the extent of fines and an invasion of privacy to farmers’ financial records.

“The [original] legislation wasn’t painting us and the industry as environmental vandals. The government’s 2019 amendments just go too far, and it is questionable whether any measures by farmers will help the Reef when the main reason there is damage to the Reef is because of a change in the climate,” Mr Sgroi said.

FARMERS INVITED TO FINE TUNE THEIR FINANCIAL MANAGEMENT SKILLS Media Release: RABOBANK A PRACTICAL workshop specifically designed to provide the financial skills essential to manage a farming operation will soon be available for northern primary producers.

Following the success of last year’s virtual Financial Skills Workshop – which prior to COVID-19 was held face-to-face – the course will again be conducted online in 2021.

Spearheaded by food and agribusiness banking specialist Rabobank’s RaboClientCouncil – a group of the bank’s farming clients who volunteer their time implementing programs that contribute to the sustainability of rural communities – the initiative is offered free of charge to farmers in the region.

The interactive workshop will focus on practical financial skills, such as gross margin analysis, cash flow budgeting and interpreting financial statements.

Rabobank Northern Territory and Northern Queensland RaboClientCouncil chair Michael Reinaudo, of Ingham, said the response to last year’s virtual format was overwhelming, with the workshops having booked out quickly.

“While it’s unfortunate we couldn’t

run the previously planned face-to-face workshops due to COVID-19 restrictions, the online option was equally as successful, with people appreciating the opportunity to learn new skills without leaving home,” he said.

Mr Reinaudo said he hoped producers walked away from the workshops – which are designed specifically for farm owners and managers – feeling positive and inspired to grow their business in the future.

“This course will give farmers a really comprehensive overview of how to run the farm from a business point of view,” he said. “Agriculture has moved well beyond the farm gate and it’s imperative to understand the financial basics.”

Mr Reinaudo said the program content would also help put farmers in the driver’s seat when talking to their financial advisers.

“This kind of information is real and valuable, as it is something you can walk away with from this program and use in the business. Having a greater understanding of your business when approaching your financier really helps when applying for any additional finance requirements or to fund a new venture,” he said.

Rabobank Regional Manager Trent McIndoe said the workshop content had

been tailored to farming businesses in the region through realistic case studies.

“Through these case studies, the sessions will look at what makes up a balance sheet, profit and loss statement and cash flow,” Mr McIndoe said, “and then interpreting the financial ratios to make calculated business decisions.

“This then feeds into sessions on how banks assess a loan and the importance of developing a business plan as well as managing the business through adversity and positioning the business when the season improves.”

Director of Hudson Facilitation, Tony Hudson will present the workshops, along with a number of agribusiness banking professionals.

Funded by RaboClientCouncils, the workshops are open to clients and nonclients of Rabobank and there is no cost for farmers to attend.

THE Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority is reminding residents to be aware of constantly changing tides at Cape Bowling Green.

Natural currents have caused sand spits in the area to move over time between the area’s yellow, blue and green zones.

Zoning rules still apply, and mariners must know their exact position to determine what zone they are in when on the water.

An essential component in managing marine areas, Zoning defines the activities

Kim Nuttall, the lead actress of the show, will be flown across the stage, adding another level to an already iconic performance.

“Basically, we apply sound rigging practices to get the structure in, and that’s where the rigging side of it disappears, and the art side comes into it because then we start to work on creating the performance.”

Ricky said that from his experience, performers take the heightened challenge and bring that little bit extra to their acting.

“Most of the time, they’re fairly excited and enthusiastic about it, and they go above and beyond to make themselves comfortable and reflect that in their performance.

“Mary’s quite simple, in the fact that there’s a classic Mary Poppins pose, and that’s the way she flies every time. There’s no acrobatics, no spinning. We just need to make sure she’s comfortable

Making the magic happen is a three-person process, as well as the inclusion of production staff.

“My job is primarily rising and lowering, attending to the safety at the height of the performer. Then one of the theatre’s rigging personnel will attend to the travelling side to side.

And then we work with the performer because they need to leave the ground, come back and perform.

And then the director and or choreographer to make sure that they’re achieving the scene they want.”

Brought in from Townsville to light up the stage is Jamie Schmidt, tasked with the challenge of recreating Victorian London.

“This particular show, there’s a lot of projection on sets, so I actually created the sets through projection. It’s all basically to enhance what the performers are doing on stage,” he said.

LOSING a family member is never easy, but there is a silver lining that can come from one easy decision.

Two Burdekin families have shared their stories, how family members helped save others have in need through organ donation.

twenty-two years, Jamie has a long history with the Burdekin Singers.

“I’ve been doing Burdekin Singers productions since about 2001. My first production was Copacabana,” he recalled.

“I’ve had a long association with the Burdekin Singers.”

Although Jamie has lit the humble stage in Ayr many times now, he has worked with some well-renowned acts.

“A fair portion of my work is actually international. I do a few shows in Townsville, but a lot of it involved travelling. I tour all over the world doing this sort of lighting,” he said.

“My main client is the Ten Tenors; I do all of their work internationally. I toured with Xavier Rudd overseas. And I worked with Hi-5 doing their shows for quite a while, and 05 Rock Eisteddfods when they SALVATION were around. I’ve done a lot 12 of different things.”

Although having done performance rigging for some time now, the most challenging part of setting up in a new venue frequently is getting the specifics perfect.

“Most of it is putting the defined systems, the length of the track and the height of the truss, and fitting it into different venues; making it fit but not getting in the way of others because plenty is going on,” he said.

“Once it’s in and running, it’s just a matter of introducing the performers to their harnesses. We have to

26 SPORT RESULTS Ayr Golf Club

Ayr Golf Club held the Mini Masters on Saturday 30/1 with Jon Lena claiming the win with a 66 nett and Wendy Baker with 68 nett. Jon also got a Hole In One on number 5 using a nine iron and Wendy got one on Sunday on the 15th Hole. Congrats to both of you Champions. Sunday 31/1 was Volunteers Day, and Chris Mann won with 42 points. The Ladies Comp started on Wednesday 3/2 and Opening Day is Saturday 6/2. All memberships must be paid before the Competition.

Ayr Ladies Bowls Club Tuesday saw the first social game of the new year ,with twenty three ladies all eager to bowl. As usual the afternoon was sponsored by Amcal Pharmacy,,what beautiful prizes for first place. Second place had prizes given by our new President ,Beryl Cornford.

Thank you to you both. The winners of the afternoon were Val Edwards / Betty Godwin, Ruth Moore, Pat Herd and Dot Cutting who defeated Carolyn Jones, Merle Nixon, Donna Soper and Dot Cutting. Second place went to Jill Beresford, Thele Powell and Heather Jorgensen who defeated Wilma Wright, Karen Page and Sandra Stidston. On Friday night, four Pairs games were contested.

Lyn Storrie and Joe Ypinazar combined in a dazzling display to defeat Chris Griggs and Doug Kiehne. The Joe-Lyn combo was that good Dolly Parton should write a song about it. Gary Pearce and Hans Baas put in a strong finish to overcome the challenge put to them by Baylee Brady and Steve Nellestein.

Wayne Coonan and Ross McLaughlin had the “game in hand” at the three-quarter mark and only just held off the fast finish from Merv Wilshere and Bob Jorgensen. Jo and Simon Griggs smashed the hopes of Margaret McLaughlin and Joy Woods in the last three ends to take out what was an even contest with three ends to go.

In the A Singles championship, Leo Kenny defeated Jamie Woods, and Vince Beitia defeated Con Sexton. In the B singles, Doug Kiehne defeated Ken Ferguson. A Singles games scheduled for Saturday at 9 am are A Garioch v C Pearce, L Feeney v R Garner, and D Kiehne v M McCloskey. A Singles games scheduled for Sunday at 9 am are D Brown v D Morello and R Paneccasio v K Ferguson.

On Sunday, two Pairs and two Triples games were contested.

Richard Mau, Ken Ferguson, and Henry Hazel were too sharp for the trio of Merv Wilshere, Gary Nosworthy, and Joe Ypinazar, taking out a comfortable victory in the end.

The trio of Mick McCloskey, Jamie Woods, and Leo Kenny looked to have the match sewn up at the halfway point. Then Dave Sheehan, Nev Dickinson, and Gary Pearce kicked into

gear and completely dominated the second half to finish with a commanding victory. Doug Kiehne and Peter Henderson slowly but steadily crushed the hopes that Wayne Coonan and Alan Garioch had of winning their game. Ray Paneccasio and Peter Jorgensen put in a display of great teamwork to overcome the challenge of Hugh Montgomery and Len Feeney.

Matches will be on again on Friday night with names in by 6:00 pm for a 6:30 pm start, and on Sunday with names in by 1:00 pm for a 1:30 pm start.

Home Hill Community Sports Club

Thursday 28 January Ten bowlers took to the green on a pleasant afternoon.

There were a few onlookers on the patio, and they gave encouragement to the teams that were on paper, up against it. It seems that when Bowlers are under pressure, they concentrate that little bit harder.

At the end of the day the scores were very close.

Triples: Bob Ford, Colleen Ford, and Glen Berryman defeated Wayne Newton, Ray Menkins, and Steve Doig.

Doubles: Hugh Montgomery and Karl Rummeny defeated Mary Poli and David Ingold.

Sunday 31 January Sunday’s Bowls were completely different. It was above average temperature and not much breeze.

We got through the games and enjoyed a cool drink afterwards.

We have to take our hats off to the oldest member of our club, Karl Rummeny. He plays bowls four days every week and is the one who always wants to play more ends in each game.

If the rest of us took note, we all might live longer. Triples: Mary Poli, Colleen Ford, and Bob Ford defeated Wayne Newton, Sue Anderson, and Steve Doig. Doubles: Glen Berryman and Les Oats defeated Dino Poli and Karl Rummeny.

Don’t forget that the bar is now open from Wednesday till Sunday and soon the kitchen will be available in the near future. I believe there is a raffle at the bar for Valentines Day, Call in and see Sharon, and you never know, you may be the winner of a pleasant surprise.

Home Hill Junior Cricket

Last Friday was the first week back at Home Hill Cricket after the Christmas break. Salvatore Cardillo smashed his way to 38 off 26 balls, which included six fours and 1 six, and Adam Camer was 25 from 25 balls when Charlie Predebon caught him out. Corey Heidke took two wickets for five runs, and Matteo Felesina also two wickets for 16 runs.

Our teams in Townsville Cricket competitions were at home on Saturday morning for their first games back.

We continued our good form following our two wins at home in the last games played in December, with two wins this week.

The Under 13s were up against Sub Parks, who batted first and were all out in the 17th over for only 69 runs after some fine bowling from Home Hill. The wickets were shared around most of our bowlers, with Thomas Cardillo the best with 2 for 3. Ethan Pengelly took the last wicket on the first ball of his spell and ended with figures of 1 for 0 runs off one ball.

We lost a wicket in the 2nd over, which brought Thomas Cardillo to the crease.

Our Under 15s were playing Brothers this week, who won the toss and sent us into bat.

We did not get off to a great start, losing both our openers by the 3rd over to be 2 for 9.

Corey Heidke and Nicholas Pengelly had cool heads to steady the ship with a 56-run partnership, until Pengelly was caught and bowled in the eighteenth over.

Heidke was soon out as well three overs later; then the wickets started falling at regular intervals. Five wickets fell for only 28 runs till the last wicket stand of 15 by Nate Di Bartolo and Joey Southwell got us to a total of 114 runs.

Nicolas Pengelly made 17 on a pitch that had some inconsistent bounce.

Bowling and fielding have been our strength, and this game was no exception.

It was a very good effort by all the boys. We bowled very economically and took eight catches to have Brothers all out for 66 in the 26th over.

Joey Southwell and Nate Di Bartolo were the pick of our bowlers with 3 for 5 and 2 for 14, respectively.

DO YOU KNOW THE MISSING NAMES? IN late 2020, Burdekin Local News featured a photograph of the Life Savers senior rugby league team from 1947/1948. Following the photograph’s publication, a number of additional names were able to be matched with the players in the photograph.

The photograph will be used in the proposed book on the history of the Ayr, Home Hill, and Burdekin Rugby Leagues, written by former Ayr resident Martin Grandelis.

This week the team photo is Natives minor junior team from 1928. Natives were one of the foundation clubs of the Ayr Rugby League in the early 20th century. In the 1920s and 1930s, Natives were a powerful force in the Ayr Rugby League. The 1928 minor junior Natives team were winners of the Hospital Cup. To date, no names have been identified for any players in this photograph (right).

WW2 and minor grade and other action photographs, Martin plans to include the A grade premiership team from 1946 to 1986 for both the Ayr and Home Hill Rugby Leagues. by Colts), 1958 (won by St Francis), and 1977 (won

by Hornets).

40 Years of the Sugar Bowl Kate Casswell Home Hill Tennis Assoc.

AS play returns at the Australian Open and Home Hill Tennis, the committee is already looking forward to the Annual Sugar Bowl.

In 2020, it was to be the fortieth Sugar Bowl, and great celebrations were planned.

Unfortunately, plans were halted due to community restrictions, but in 2021 the fortieth Sugar Bowl will take place. This year, the club is looking forward to putting its plans and hard work into action.

There is an official dinner planned for Friday night on the 30th of April and a pig on the spit on Sunday night. Play

will be from May 1st to 3rd.

In 2020, we had the maximum number of teams organised to play in the event, and organisers are hopeful that these teams will still all be able to come. There was a lot of interest from former players of “The Bowl” who were keen to come back and catch up with the Sugar Bowl family.

A Sugar Bowl fishing shirt was created to mark the special occasion, and that proved very popular. At only $45, it is a bargain. Re-orders are currently open until the 14th of February.

LOCAL CLUBS SUPPORTING CLUBS Hayden Menso ONE of the significant aspects of the Burdekin’s sporting community is its ability to be there for each other.

A prime example is a donation of funds from the Ayr Ladies Bowls Club to the Ayr Surf Life Saving Club, made on Tuesday afternoon.

Ayr Ladies Bowls Club President Beryl Cornford presented James Kennedy, President of the Ayr SLSC, with the cheque after the afternoon’s bowls had been played.

For many years, the Bowls Club were buying each other Christmas gifts in a Secret Santa fashion but decided four years ago to take a different approach.

“We decided instead to each donate money and collect it, and at the end of the year donate it to a local organisation,” Beryl said.

Previously the club has fundraised for CORES, Burdekin Neighbourhood Centre and Volunteer Marine Rescue.

“This Christmas, we decided to donate the money

to the Ayr Surf Life Saving Club. It may not be much, but hopefully, it supports the great work they do.”

Ayr SLSC’s James Kennedy said the donation was a welcome surprise.

“Sometimes we have to battle for funds, so for someone to ring up and donate to us out of the blue is amazing,” he said.

“Burdekin clubs supporting Burdekin clubs is what I’m all about, and it’s great to have the support from others in the community.”

FOR the Panthers, training has started on Tuesday and Thursday evenings at International Park. The new season starts on 24 March, with the first round of the FFA Cup and with the North Queensland season starting after Easter on 14 April. The Club hopes to field six Senior teams, the same as last season.

READY FOR ‘21 The Burdekin Football Club held its AGM last Sunday. Laurence Dal Santo was elected President for another year and most of the executive have been returned. On the coaching side Chris Wicks and Angelo Licciardello will be looking after the Men’s Premier and Reserve teams with the other coaching positions yet to be filled.

JR COMMITTEE NEEDED Burdekin Football Juniors held their AGM on last Wednesday but are still looking for new members to join their committee, after several positions remain vacant. Please consider giving up some time to assist your club. Feel free to contact us for further information.

JUNIORS BECKONING The Juniors pre-season trials start on 19 February

and the season proper begins on 24 March. The Juniors are busy preparing behind the scenes for the upcoming season. There are several options available to suit junior players of all ages in 2021. Registrations are now open for U5 - U10 local competition which is played on Saturday mornings at the Ayr fields. We are currently calling for expressions of interest for our new U11-U14 Friday night competition. Further details can be found on the Club Facebook page.

WALKING FOOTBALL Walking Football continued on Monday and a few more players are needed. Last week in an exciting game, Blayellow beat Blurs with the Player of the Week award going to Graham Chutney. The Eathornes Masters League will be kicking off on 22 February enabling its participants to run around and kick something on Monday nights.

A LEAGUE ACTION The A League is getting itself sorted out with most teams having played four, some five and Newcastle six matches. Brisbane Roar who beat Adelaide 3-1 has taken over first place from Central Coast who lost 1-2 at home to Wellington. Western Sydney is in third place

and at the other end of the table Wellington, Melbourne Victory and Newcastle all have four points. New team Macarthur lost 0-3 to Sydney FC and is in sixth place.

SYDNEY TOPS W In the W League, Sydney FC, still with a 100% record, leads the table from Canberra with Brisbane Roar in third spot. The Roar won 3-2 away to Melbourne City. At the other end of the ladder, Perth Glory is propping up Western Sydney and the rest.

ENGLISH ACTION In the EPL, Man City have taken over the lead from ManU with Liverpool up to third place and Leicester fourth. Chelsea, under new manager, Thomas Tuchel managed a win and climb to seventh place. The 5th Round of the FA Cup will be played from next Tuesday.

EUROPEAN GOALS In Europe most of the matches are still in empty stadia but are still being played. In Spain, Atletico is now ten points clear of Barcelona and Real Madrid and look to have La Liga won while in Italy, AC Milan is two points clear of Inter with Roma still in third place and Juventus fourth.

In the Bundesliga it is almost all over with Bayern still seven points clear of Leipzig with Wolfsburg moving up to in third place and in France, PSG continue to struggle and has dropped to third place behind Lille and Lyon.

Hayden Menso IN AN exciting announcement to kick off the NRL season, the North Queensland Toyota Cowboys will take on feeder club the Townsville Blackhawks in a scrimmage match at Ayr’s Rugby Park on Saturday, February 13.

The opposed training session will be open to the public, and will feature some of the Cowboys’ biggest stars for a rare appearance on Burdekin turf.

Co-captains Michael Morgan and Jason Taumalolo will take charge alongside Valentine Holmes, Kyle Feldt, Jordan McLean, and Josh McGuire.

Their opposition, the Townsville Blackhawks, will be bringing their talented squad, which is currently coached by Cowboys great Aaron Payne.

The match will be a pivotal training session for the teams, providing some welcome on-field entertainment, but without an end score or countdown clock.

Kick-off will take place at 8.45 am at Rugby Park on Wickham Street in Ayr. Afterwards, the entire Cowboys squad will visit Don West Toyota for a fan meet and greet and signing session, from 11.30 am to 12.30 pm.

“The Blackhawks have traditionally been one of the Queensland Cup’s strongest sides since their inception and we’re expecting a stern test.

“With only one official trial this year, this scrimmage against the Blackhawks is an extremely important part of our preparation for the start of the NRL season.”

Burdekin Roosters Junior Rugby League are proud to announce their success in gaining $33,200 worth of grant funding for upgrades to Ayr’s Rugby Park.

The funds will be used on airconditioning, seating and fencing, coming from the Gambling Community Benefit Fund Queensland.

in Ayr for the first Saturday of February. The club is meeting at Coutts Park, Beach Road, at 6am for a trip past the soccer fields.
