DE-LIGHTS Hayden Menso THE BURDEKIN has well and truly turned it on, lighting up the town in the spirit of Christmas for 2020.

Marking the start of the most magical time of the year, hundreds of residents gathered at the Christmas House party on Tuesday, December 1.

Parents and children alike admired the fantastic display of lights put on by Jeffrey Lunn and Leon McCormack, who has been welcoming the Burdekin to their home on the corner of Edwards and Darwin Streets for the thirteenth year running.

Spreading cheer to begin December, it was a timely start to the communities’ festivities.

Perform Music entertained the crowd with classic carols, the Home Hill Lions cooking up a storm for dinner, and Jeffrey, Leon, and their helpers kept the sweet treats coming with popcorn, snow cones, and fairy floss.

If you couldn’t make it on Tuesday evening, you might have heard 97.1 Sweet FM radio’s broadcast live at the event.

In what has been a challenging year for so many, launching the festive season with the house party was a welcome affair.

The men behind the extravaganza, Jeffrey and Leon, said it was all the more fitting to continue the tradition this year.

“Let the party begin. It feels great, but it’s a relief that it’s all up and running,” Jeffrey said.

“We had a bit of problem the last few nights with network cables and testing, up until midnight the last three nights. [But] it’s ended up good; we’re really happy with it,” Jeffrey said.

Tuesday’s crowd was a testament to the pair’s hard work, dedication, and community spirit.

“It’s good to see a lot of people enjoying it. The carollers were excellent, just fantastic. Makes the hard work all worthwhile,” Jeffrey said.

“We start the first weekend in October, on weekends and afternoons, all the way up until the last day in November, until we make sure it’s all ready to go,” Jeffrey said.

The lights display started initially small but grew over time to become the ultimate display we all enjoy today.

“It was just lights in the window, and a few out in the yard, not running to music. And then, we started seeing a few other displays elsewhere, and it just grew bigger, now running it with the music,” Leon said.

You can tune your radio in to 100.5FM to hear the music running in time with the lights.

The display, now a December icon in Ayr, is all the more special this year.

“It takes peoples’ minds off things; it’s something for the community to get out and do with the kids.

Nothing else has been happening all year,” Jeffrey said.

“It gets bigger and bigger until Christmas Eve, which is absolutely massive. We’ll have the same again on the 23rd and 24th, with snow cones, fairy floss, and popcorn.”

Home Hill Lions cooked up a storm for the festivities

The jolly man in red and white himself, Santa Claus, is set to make an appearance on those nights before heading off to deliver presents later on Christmas Eve. “We just want to thank everyone for coming, and all of the helpers that helped us out with the popcorn and snow cones, and thanks to all the neighbours,” Jeffrey said.

The light and sounds display will run each night from 6:30 pm, until approximately 10:30 pm, at 196 Edwards Street, opposite the Ayr Golf Clubhouse.

The display will go until midnight on Christmas Eve, in conjunction with the house party.

Do you know the missing names?

IN our edition of 1 October, the Burdekin Local News featured a story about a book on the history of the Ayr, Home Hill and Burdekin Rugby Leagues being written by former Ayr resident Martin Grandelis.

The story attracted much interest, and several local residents came forward with old newspaper clippings,

programs, photographs and stories from rugby league’s colourful past.

Over time Martin has sourced some old team photographs but is missing many of the player’s names and officials.

Over the next few weeks, we plan to print a team photo from the past to see if all players and officials in the

picture can be identified.

This week the team photo is Life Savers senior team possibly from 1946 or 1947.

Life Savers Club was formed after World War II and played in the Ayr Rugby League competition. They had their first success in 1947 when Life Savers junior team secured a premiership. They would later secure senior

premierships under coach Austen Jordan and captain Jack Huggins in 1948 and Alex Farquhar as captain/coach in 1951.

Today’s photo includes both Jack Huggins, Alex Farquhar, long time Life Savers President Sam Johnson, Alf Franks and possibly Larry ‘Buller’ Tait and Charlie Carcary and

many more. Ted Hurworth who came to Ayr in 1946 and played until the end of 1948 is believed to be captain of the team. (Ted would be play fullback in the Ayr Foley Shield team captained by Norm McHardie that played the inaugural Foley Shield Final on Sunday 29 August 1948).

In Brief Aged Home Restrictions Ease

With the easing of COVID-19 restrictions, local aged care homes are now able to lift restrictions on visitors. There is now no limit on how many visitors a resident can have at one time, and no need to book in your visits. Proof of a flu vaccination is no longer necessary for new visitors.

Visitors to the homes in both Ayr and Home Hill are still required to enter through front reception, sign in, answer the questions, and have your temperature checked.

That top is even more prevalent, with the business taking out Store of the Year for Queensland, at the Independent Hardware Group’s awards for 2020.

The award spawns from a general health check of the store, covering many areas such as customer first impression, housekeeping, stock ranging, staff presentation, customer service and customer engagement.

For the owners and staff of Parkside Mitre10, winning the state award means a great deal.

Operating for over 65 years, the business is famously owned and operated by the Tapiolas family, particularly Wilfred Tapiolas Senior, synonymous with the Mitre 10 store.

Wilfred passed away in

March this year at age 97, but worked in the store right up to 12 months before his passing.

Parkside Group said Wilfred was the lifeblood of the business, with much passion for the store, especially customer service and having the right stock.

He knew where every piece of stock was and was able to lead a customer to any obscure item they may have been looking for.

Without Wilfred, what he did and how he lead his team over the many years, this award may not have happened; Wilfred would have been very proud of the win.

Customers will have noticed significant upgrades over the past 18 months, much of which had great impact in taking out the state win.

A power pole located in East Ayr had suffered severe damage on Saturday, snapping at the top. The incident caused much of the suburb to lose power for hours.

By winning the award, it makes the investment of renovating the store all the more worthwhile.

The award puts the Burdekin in the spotlight, showcasing the abilities of regional businesses and staff on a state level.

School Bus Incident

Paramedics attended an incident in Ayr around 8:20am on Tuesday morning involving a school bus. A number of children complained of back pain with one taken to hospital.

Drug Possession Charges

Ayr Police recently intercepted a vehicle on Old Clare Road in Ayr. The Ayr Criminal Investigation Branch searched the vehicle, seizing 28g of methylamphetamine, $20,000 cash, mobile phones, a UHF scanner and drug paraphernalia.

An Ayr man (25), and Mackay man (36), were charged with multiple offences and are due to appear in Ayr Magistrates Court on December 7.

Rebuilding our Economy Creating Jobs Building Roads

Saving Queensland Jobs Under our COVID-19 response the Morrison Government has provided $10.7 billion in JobKeeper payments saving thousands of Queensland jobs.

The Australian economy is now fighting back. Our plan to grow the economy and create jobs includes: The JobMaker Hiring Credit that will provide an incentive of up to $200 a week for employers to hire new workers aged 16-35; supporting around 450,000 jobs for young people.

Establishing the $1 billion JobTrainer fund to create free and low-cost training places for school leavers and job seekers.

100,000 new apprenticeships and traineeships, with a 50 per cent wage subsidy for businesses who employ them.

Lower Taxes for Households and Businesses Queenslanders will have more of their own money to spend on what matters to them, generating billions of dollars of economic activity and creating new jobs.

Putting more money into the pockets of Australian households, with a tax cut backdated to 1 July 2020 benefitting 2.3 million Queenslanders.

Lower and middle income earners will this year receive tax relief of up to $2,745 for singles, and up to $5,490 for dual income families compared with 2017-18.

Thousands of Queensland businesses will be eligible for business tax incentives, helping 99% of businesses to immediately deduct the full cost of eligible assets.

Building Burdekin Roads The Morrison McCormack Liberal National Government is investing: Haughton River Floodplain Upgrade – $412 million ($514 million total) – 544 jobs supported to replace three bridges, upgrade 13.5km of highway and nine intersections plus add centre line treatments.

Palm Tree Creek overtaking lanes & highway safety works – $40.52 million ($45.2 million total project) – 89 jobs supported for safety upgrades over 10.5km.

Burdekin Bridge rehabilitation project – $64.7 million for major works.

Local Roads and Community Infrastructure Program – $1,479,882 direct to Burdekin Shire Council for roads, bridges and community infrastructure including works on Rita Island Road – Anabranch floodway and Norham & Airdmillan Road.

LOCAL GROUP WITH A GLOBAL REPUTATION AN unassuming Burdekin café this week opened its doors to a worldwide audience.

The Gudjuda Deck Café is one of the self-generating business arms of the Gudjuda Reference Group, an organisation dedicated to promoting and building the First Nations communities of the Burdekin.

Eddie Smallwood helped establish the group in 1999, while he was also chairman of the Townsville region, advocating for indigenous affairs in the political sphere from Sarina to Mission Beach.

One of the founding members, he has played a pivotal role in the organisation’s growth and its amazing work within the community, chairing the group for the past 15 years.

The initial purpose of the organisation was to push for native title determination for the six traditional owner groups in the Burdekin.

“The resources weren’t there a lot of the time,” Mr

Smallwood said. “We’ve just had to struggle to get to where we are. Now that we’ve passed a few good stages, we‘re going into the future.”

As well as operating the Gudjuda Deck Cafe, Eddie runs the group’s Indigenous ranger program focusing on maintaining the land and employment.

He’s also involved with several training and employment initiatives within the indigenous community and manages a turtle tagging conservation program in Bowen.

“Our government funding is for our ranger program,” Mr Smallwood said. “All the rest of it is self-generated. “ It is the success of the organisation and its standalone businesses – among them the Gudjuda Deck Café – which this week took centre stage at an international conference.

in Brisbane, representing the Burdekin and hosting a virtual workshop to a global audience.

Hosted on Wednesday and Thursday by the Australian Indigenous Governance Institute and Reconciliation Australia, it drew together Indigenous groups and speakers from around the world, including Canada, the United States and New Zealand.

Mr Smallwood was invited

to speak about the success and development of Gudjuda, held up as a shining example for other Indigenous groups.

“What they look at is Indigenous organisations that have stood the test of time,” Mr Smallwood said.

“They want to promote Indigenous governance to all people.

“I’ll go back through history to talk about where we’ve come from and where we are.

“People around Australia

and around the world will be able to tap into it – and I’ll be running one section of the workshop with my presentation.”

The conference will also provide an opportunity to learn from other organisations.

“We’re targeting Indigenous organisations to see how they’ve succeeded over the years,” Mr Smallwood said.

PULSAR THE DIRT-PHOBIC ECHIDNA GETS REHABILITATED IN GIRU Marina Trajkovich

Baby Pulsar was brought into care after being rescued from the side of the road

thursday 03 december 2020 WILDLIFE carers have released Pulsar the echidna puggle into Bowling Green Bay National Park after his successful and slightly strange rehabilitation at the Wildlife Surrounds Conservation Centre in Giru.

The spiny marsupial had been brought to conservationist and echidna specialist Clare Baldwin’s attention, before being rehomed in the new enclosure at the wildlife centre.

She says that initially, Pulsar refused to walk on dirt, scurrying hastily back to cement pavers whenever he could, displaying highly unusual behaviour for the burrowing species.

“It took him a long time to actually get used to putting his feet in dirt and grass, he didn’t like it very much,” she says.

“He needed a little bit longer because he didn’t quite take to the outdoor life!”

Once in Miss Baldwin’s care, she enlisted the help of Wildlife Surround’s Shakira Todd, who helped collect volunteers to build a new enclosure at the centre.

“Once we made this big enclosure for him out at Shakira’s place, to start with he just walked around the edges on the concrete.”

“But eventually, he got the idea that you need to be living in dirt and mucking around.”

After a month in care and gradually getting used to his new surroundings, the pair let Pulsar waddle to his new life when he was ready.

Clare says that his hesitation and resistance to getting his feet dirty may be due to his previous handling.

“Every carer has a different approach,” she says.

“He probably just got handled a bit more than he should’ve done. So what we had to do is basically remind it that that’s what happens in the real world!”

Rather than curling into a spiny ball when touched, Clare says that Pulsar would roll onto his back and look up at his carers, an indication his natural protective instincts were slightly askew.

“It took him a while to adjust to the fact that I wouldn’t pick him up or handle him in any way.”

“He really needed to learn to be an individual and to get out there in the wild.”

Passersby brought Pulsar into care after finding him on the side of the road as a baby.

Clare says that often puggles are brought to her after damage to their burrows by human activity.

“It took him a bit longer to be released, but we were able to release him, which was such a relief.”

Weave and give a line Sandi Milani started the Burdekin Artisan Community Association to bring together members of the arts community.

THE Burdekin Artisan Community Association has been bringing together and helping artists in the community since 2014, providing a space to workshop and sell their work in Home Hill.

President of the Association, Sandi Milani says the sense of community at the space is huge, with creatives coming together to explore their work and learn from one another.

The associations latest project called ‘Weave A Moment Of Your Time’ invites guests to contribute a line of weaving to a communally created table runner during their visit.

The Association will hold an event next year, raffling the table runner on completion to raise funds for a community charity.

“It’s our payback to the community for their support, something like this,” she says.

Sandi got her creative start sewing and

making jewellery before moving into other crafts like crochet and felting.

“I’d been sewing for years; my father used to do fastening, so I learnt to do jewellery making.”

She is proud of what the Association has brought to the people of the Burdekin.

“It started, myself and Janet Ypinazar had a gallery in Ayr. From that, we decided that the last exhibition we did when we were closing, with the money raised from that we would start this member group.”

“I had suggested to Janet that we try to find some like-minded people and within probably three weeks we had about eight members who were interested in starting this.”

“I always thought that the Burdekin, with the number of talented artists here, it needed Marina Trajkovich something.”

Where can we holiday Pierina?

Marina Trajkovich WHEN the state borders opened last month, Pierina Dalle Cort’s whole office at Hello World Travel breathed a collective sigh of relief.

With international and then interstate travel restricted, the owner of the travel agent was witnessing the biggest crisis to ever hit the industry, work she has loved for the last 38 years.

“The effect in this office has been mammoth,” she says.

But as the borders reopen in time for Christmas she sees a glimmer of hope, encouraging people to explore more of Australia and to support local tourism business.

“We were looking forward to everything opening up, we are one country.”

An experienced traveller herself, she reflects on 7 months of road tripping in a van around Australia.

She says that while it has been great that Queenslanders have been discovering more within their own state, the opportunity to visit the rest of Australia is now an exciting prospect.

“We’ve always had the domestic market and we’ve obviously got a lot more of it now.”

With Christmas and January, Pierina says the inflow of domestic travellers visiting the agency has steadily increased, stressing that holiday planners in this period book as soon as possible.

“Places for Christmas and New Year are becoming so tight with accommodation and availability.”

“Everybody is trying to get home after being separated from their

families for so long.”

Her top picks for travel destinations within Australia are the northern Kimberley regions in Western Australia, a personal favourite.

The Kimberley is perhaps best known for its rugged, dramatic gorges and stunning national parks.

She also recommends Broome in WA, where visitors can explore and stride along stunning beaches atop a camel guide.

She says that the Margaret River is another popular WA getaway.

Another personal favourite of Pierina’s is beautiful Tasmania.

“Tasmania is becoming very popular.”

For the wine lovers amongst us, she recommends visiting the Barossa Valley, in South Australia where vineyard strolls and cellar door wine tastings are almost a mandatory

LONG-SERVING TEACHER RECOGNISED Teaching our young children in the early years of life is an important role, developing life skills that stay with them forever.

Hayden Menso LOCAL Sue Amore has celebrated fifteen years as the director of the Home Hill Community Kindergarten, recognised by students and staff with the installation of a new bird feeder to the centre.

Beginning officially at the kindergarten in January 2006, the fondly known “Miss Sue” has been teaching the town’s kids ever since.

The kindy committee decided to celebrate the milestone with the new bird feeder box and matching plaque.

The plaque reads, “Thank you Sue for teaching our baby birds to fly for over 15 years.”

Committee president Carley Harvey said although the feeder box was purchased, there was much

community involvement in the project.

“Home Hill Engineering, Torrie Davies, donated the concrete that we installed the birdfeeder with around the base. My Pets Home Hill donated us two bags of birdseed.

“It’s so awesome, we’re a community kindy, so it’s not for profit. We fundraise 24/7 to get resources to put back towards the kids, and it’s just so wonderful to have the local businesses without batting an eyelid, say ‘sure we can help,’ Carley said.

The box had been installed when Sue was away, so the piece was an extra special surprise on her return.

A big shout out to the Ayr and Home Hill Hospital - thank you!

As I write this, my dear old Dad is living out his precious last days in the palliative care unit at the Home Hill Hospital. I say precious, not because these days are precious to him, I say it selfishly as these days are precious to us, his family. A family that is as diverse as it is huge. Huge in numbers, 10 children and 37 grandchildren at the last count. My family is beautiful, massive and a little bit messy in love!

So – there are a lot of people in my family that have many things to be thankful for. At the moment, top of mind is how we have so appreciated the kindness and care given to my Dad by the health workers at both the Ayr and Home Hill Hospital over the last 12 weeks of his life. When I say health workers, I mean the catering staff, allied health staff, nurses

and doctors. We couldn’t come close to adequately express our gratitude for the part they have played in these, my Dad’s last and most painful of days. Dad has also been very blessed by the Home Hill Choral Society, who in their own time, have come to the hospital on several occasions to sing to him in his hospital room.

It is obvious to me, and I am very thankful to know, that joy can actually be found in the darkest and toughest of times. It comes with the love of family, the kindness of our carers and the selfless contribution of community.

Dad’s personal story is way too large and rich to go into here, I will leave that for another time. On reflection though, I know my Dad is reaping a reward for a life well lived. Sometimes there are only two words we need to say, “Thank you”.

We rode electric scooters from the radio station to the hospital, aiming to raise $10,000. With the help of our

community, we raised over $40,000 for the Townsville University Hospital’s Brighter Lives.

Crystal: Bin chickens, Magnetic Island AND some of the most friendly people in the whole country. What’s not to love?

Salvation Army Christmas Appeal returns The Salvation Army and Dale Last’s Christmas Appeal invites donations for Christmas, anticipating a particularly tough festive season for struggling families.

THE Salvation Army and Dale Last's Christmas Appeal is returning for another year, providing Christmas hampers, toys and donations for families in need this holiday season.

Head of The Salvation Army's Ayr branch, Katrina McIntosh says that it's difficult to predict how this year's appeal will play out.

"We're all expecting there to be an increased demand, but we don't know what that looks like at this stage," she says.

"This year has been a tricky year; we are seeing a lot of people who we haven't seen before walking through the door accessing support."

She says that most of the people who access the support are low-income earners, with many experiencing homelessness or escaping domestic violence.

"The back to school costs come straight on top of Christmas, so it's a really expensive period for families. And particularly, big families."

The hampers consist of essential pantry items and necessities that relieve some

stress on a family's Christmas budget.

"If we can buffer the budget a little then they can spend the money on some of the nice things that make Christmas special."

The Salvation Army will be collecting donations outside Coles in Ayr from the 14th to the 18th of December, with all proceeds going into local Christmas hampers.

Toys and non-perishable goods donations are welcome at Salvos stores or through Mr Last's office in the Centrepoint Arcade.

"The donations from the Burdekin Woodcrafts Association and the Burdekin Men's Shed received each year are always popular. And put a smile on the faces of the children who receive them," says Mr Last.

"I think for the parents it's the food and little luxuries that are donated that help them the most at a time that can be very confronting."

"Every donation, big or small, makes a huge difference because it shows people who are doing it tough that the community cares and that they are not alone."

A Greek Christmas

In the lead up to Christmas, Burdekin Local News will be profiling members of our community to see how their family celebrates Christmas. For our first week of December, we speak to Maria Vouyioukas about the festive season in the Greek community.

Marina Trajkovich MARIA Vouyioukas from Five Ways Fish is always the first on the dance floor at family events, the Greek music characteristic of her childhood playing in the background.

Her Christmases are a huge family affair, drawing together the Greek community in Ayr in a celebration of feasting.

She remembers arriving in Ayr from her island home in Lesvos at the age of five, returning to Ayr where her grandparents had previously lived as cane farmers.

“I grew up in a very much Greek household, to me I thought that was normal!” says Maria.

“My grandfather was one of those migrants who came to develop Australia, and he came down here on a sailing ship apparently, in the 1890s.”

“Back then, they worked on the railway line to build it up here. He actually bought cane farms out here and married a Greek lady. She died, and he started hanging out with Australian girls.

“The family didn’t like that, so they brought my grandmother here!”

She reflects on the substantial Greek community in Ayr growing up and the weekly parties held at the family home.

“I had an uncle upstairs, an uncle across the road, mum and dad out the back, a cousin across there and next door is my sister.”

“We are so family-oriented and close.”

She says that a staple of any Greek Christmas is a delicious, slow-cooked lamb on the spit for larger gatherings.

Maria remembers when her family roasts were still done over hot coals, the men of the family taking it in turns to continually turn the spit.

At the same time, the women prepared decadent sweets and pastries inside.

Later, fire pit spit roasts were replaced with an electric spit oven, or Maria would prepare her famous slowcooked lamb in the oven at home.

Her lamb is always a family favourite, stuffed with rice, onion, oregano and tomatoes and left to slow cook in the oven for up to 12 hours, a delight she says is worth the wait.

“We do goat as well when you can get it, in the oven, it’s really lovely,” she says.

“I tend to do cheese puffs and spanakopita, which is a pastry dish.”

On the sweeter side of things, she prepares Baklava for the family, a rich and honeyed, layered pastry dish.

“We do the greek sweets; the shortbread is a very popular thing; they do another thing called the Finika, which is a honey biscuit. That’s normally what we do at Christmas.”

She also prepares Galaktoboureko, a Greek

custard cake baked in filo pastry.

Once Christmas is over, the family waits for their New Years celebrations, creating the Vasilopita, or New Years cake.

The cake conceals a hidden coin in one of its slices, bestowing luck to its founder in the New Year.

“We put a coin in there and then at midnight on New

Year’s Eve you start cutting the cake up, you cut the cake and say, “this is for God, this is for the household, and this is for you, you and you,” to all have a piece.

“And then whoever gets the coin has luck for the year.”

“The kids love it, they come back and keep eating cake to find the coin.”

“That’s New Year, and we all look forward to that.”

Maria’s Slow Cooked Greek Lamb “Gone are the days of the lamb on the spit, nowadays we stuff the top half of the lamb with a combination of; rice, onion, salt, pepper, oregano and tomato.

“The lamb is then cooked overnight in a slow oven and can take up to 12 hours, but it’s worth the wait!

“I usually put the lamb in about 10 pm the night before on a low heat and then it’s ready for 12 pm the next day.

“I generally take it off at 11 o’clock to let it rest for an hour and at this point, it’s already falling off the bone.

INGREDIENTS Whole Lamb shoulder (Ask your butcher for the top half of a lamb) Beef mince 1.5 cups long-grain rice.

1 onion 3 garlic cloves 2 fresh tomatoes or a small can of tinned tomatoes.

A few tbs olive oil ½ cup of fresh oregano or 3 tbs dried oregano.

1.5 cups water Salt and pepper

METHOD 1. P repare the filling for your lamb by sauteing the onion and mince and adding a few tablespoons of fresh or dried oregano and seasoning with some salt.

2. A dd 1.5 cups of rice, the tomatoes and 3 cups of water and simmer for 10 minutes.

3. M ix the ingredients for your filling and prepare your lamb shoulder.

4. B aste the meat with olive oil, oregano, salt and pepper and open the cavity to prepare for the stuffing.

5. Once the stuffing is inside the lamb shoulder, sew the fold together, the traditional way with a needle and thread. Ensure the filling is quite liquidy to prevent the lamb from drying out while cooking.

6. C ut small slits in the skin of the lamb and insert slices of fresh garlic.

7. Preheat the oven to 120°C and insert Lamb.

8. L eave to slow cook for approximately 12 hours before removing from the oven to rest an hour before serving.

Bringing back the Christmas Spirit Celebrating the true meaning of Christmas in 2020

2020 has been a very different year for most people.

After being locked down for months, members of the local Catholic Women’s League began to reflect on why our places of worship were closed, yet people could gather for marches of protest in the name of freedom of speech.

Members didn’t protest in the name of freedom of worship but quietly obeyed laws, prayed at home, and watched Livestream and YouTube masses. Perhaps our safety was due to the prayers of many dedicated people from all religions around the state.

Being locked down gave CWL members the time to reflect on what we can do to make sure our love of God and appreciation of the many gifts we enjoy every day are not lost among the celebrations around Christmas time.

Hence, the big question in most of our minds is, “What will Christmas be like this year?”

Members are keeping Christmas alive by decorating the St Vincent de Paul shop windows to promote the true Christmas spirit.

Many people, members, friends, and help from the community, have contributed to making sure these windows are something to admire, inspire and give us reason to keep alive a faith that sustains each of us when we need Jesus most.

Sometime between now and Christmas, come along and view the windows, bring your children so they will learn the true meaning of Christmas.

It is not only about giving and receiving but about the birth of a child who changed the world.

The window will be lit up each night until 10pm.

A life in racing Robyn Hewson has been an enormous part of Burdekin community events for decades Marina Trajkovich When Robyn Hewson started training racehorses as a young woman, she experienced the vitriol of her peers in the male-centric industry.

Before long, she was dominating the local races, training esteemed horses and winning titles alongside her jockeying husband, Mark.

She was raised in Augathella before moving to the Burdekin where she taught herself to work with horses, later meeting her husband through racing.

“Out in the bush, we all had bush horses to ride at the rodeo and stuff like that.”

“I was a horse trainer, a female horse trainer before that, amongst a lot of males at the time which was hard

going, very, very hard going,” she says. “A female back then in a small town was laughable.”

She flicks through old photos and regards her trophies with pride, reflecting on a busy life involved with several of the Burdekin’s key clubs and associations.

“There are more women now, there are more women jockeys over in Home Hill than there are males. It’s changed big time since that girl won the Melbourne Cup. “There are husband and wife teams all over the place now, especially in country places.”

She says her involvement with the Racing Club started while working with her husband, joining again

years after her racing career finished in a bid to keep the club running.

“We supported the country racing like you wouldn’t believe. The two of us. We did well.”

While her training days are behind her, she has continued to be an active presence in the community for decades, now working as a carer for the elderly.

A lifetime member of the Show Association and the Water Festival, she has become the backbone of many community organisations over the years, dedicating her time to ensure that the events the Burdekin is known for, continue.

She recalls participating in the Water Festival, leading a

horse-drawn float during the parade one year.

Lifelong friend Melba Hyne says that Robyn has made considerable contributions in the Burdekin over the years.

She expressed gratitude to Robyn for her continued involvement with the Breast Cancer Network Australia and the Relay for Life

organisation, helping her while her daughter battled breast cancer.

The pair have been organising groups of women to fundraise since the relay first came to the Burdekin, 13 years ago.

“She’s one of those people who put their hands up to do it, not out to receive

SES prepare for storm season WITH the wet season fast approaching, Burdekin SES urges residents to prepare for when disaster strikes.

Burdekin State Emergency Service members are getting out and about in the community, creating awareness for the storm period.

SES Local Controller, John Winn, said there is no better time to get prepared.

“There is still time to prepare your property.

Which includes trimming tree branches, clearing out gutters and downpipes, repairing existing damage to your roof. And of course, having an emergency kit that will supply each member of the household for three days,” Mr Winn said.

The service has received a set of new radios for improved communication from the Queensland government. It is in the process of upgrading one of its trucks at Clare through a council grant.

“Clare is also due to have its boat replaced shortly; it’ll be getting a considerably bigger boat. One’s going into Home Hill too,” Mr Francis said.”

“We’ve recently had excellent support from the council in things like mowing and mitigation, things that will help us do our job when the floods come. They’re preparing the landscape, so when the flood comes, we’ll be able to do our work much better. In particular, Rita Island, and we’re working on Giru,” Mr Francis said.

With a La Nina weather event declared for the coming months, there’s an increased chance of rainfall and flooding.

“It’s a case of looking out the window tomorrow and see what happens. You’ve just got to be ready.

Anyone that lives in the North, you’ve got to clean your yard up and sort things out,” Mr Winn said.

“If you live in Giru, they know what they’re prepared for, as far as flooding goes. Most of the houses have their whitegoods on stands for when the water gets to a certain height.

Rita Island residents know they’re cut off, [as do] Groper Creek.”

The SES was heavily involved in the flooding events of February 2019, when the road was cut at Plantation Park between Ayr and Home Hill for several days.

With five depots across the Burdekin, located in Ayr, Home Hill, Clare, Rita Island, and Giru, our SES heroes will be on hand should the need arise.

Having already held events in Giru and one at Clare on the weekend, SES will be holding another open day on Saturday, December 12, at the Ayr depot on McCathie Street in the industrial estate.

There will be displays from SES, Queensland Fire and Emergency Service, Rural Fire Brigade, Volunteer Marine Rescue, and the Ayr Surf Life Saving Club.

John has been a part of the Burdekin SES for 34 years and has seen it all.

“Basically, we’ve dealt with floods, cyclones, land search, missing persons, traffic control, and many deployments right up the Queensland coast,” he said.

Warren Francis has been in the local service for a few years, taking on the Group Leader’s role this year.

The group is seeking new community members to join the service, increasing the workforce available for the coming months.

“We need all ages, male or female. Just people out here we can contact that are on the ground who can give us information about flooding and events that are occurring.”

SES members are provided with full training to aid disaster relief efforts.

“The training is of high quality. Whether it’s putting a tarp on a roof or [operating] flood boats, the training is excellent. If people have an interest, they’ll develop skills that will take them through their whole life.”

“WE’VE hit the ground running. Sales are happening, rentals are tight,” Kylie said, now in her ninth week of trading Explore Property Burdekin.

“Sales are doing really well, and it’s basically quite a broad mix of people. A lot of first home buyers are looking into the market. I have sold one to an out-of-town person, who has come up here, purely because they’ve driven through the area years ago and liked it, and now they’ve got children, so they’ve come back to bring their children up in our area. A few investments; we’ve got a couple, one sold and a couple under contract with investors. So, it’s quite a broad range of people buying.”

Kylie said her investors have been in the more mature age range locally, with first home buyers under 25.

“I have had a couple of inquiries of people wanting to downsize, but that’s still early days.”

When dealing with those from out-of-town, the Burdekin’s affordability is again the central selling point.

“I’ve had quite a bit of interest from out of town people on a property for sale at the moment, purely because of the price. It’s a lower-end property. From Mackay, Townsville,

Charters Towers, and I had one from Yambah actually; so, it was a spread. It’s a lot of everyone, really.”

Kylie, who began working in real estate in 2005 as a property manager before progressing into sales, says low house prices are crucial for the market.

“I think it’s the roll in the cycle. I’ve seen this happen previously, when the prices are low, and the market zooms off, which they are predicting it to do.”

However, there is a spread of properties on offer.

“In saying that, I’ve got properties from $85,000 to $500,000 sold. It’s a broad gap from one extreme to the other,” Kylie said.

The Burdekin’s rental shortage could be caused by families taking up such homes, rather than for others looking to enter the region in a rental.

“I believe that a lot of rental properties have been sold to owner-occupiers because the prices have been very reasonable. I know myself, previously, have sold a lot to owneroccupiers, and that takes that pool of houses out of the rental market.”

A celebration and fundraiser to end a month of moustache growing took place at the Kalamia Hotel on the 29th November, organised by Andrea Piotto from Nrgize Fitness.

The group of men and women came together to show off and admire the mos with awards given for the best and worst moustaches grown over the month.

The group has raised over $4000 in total for Ross Romeo’s CORES, the Burdekin’s suicide prevention network and advocacy organisation.

Mo-grower Jason Schultz also spoke with the group about his experience with testicular cancer. He was encouraging the men to look after themselves and each other and to do those vital health checks.

THE BURDEKIN Small Schools took to the pool on Friday at the annual Small Schools’ Swimming Carnival.

Students from Osborne, Kalamia, Airville, Maidavale, Clare, Millaroo, Jarvisfield, Giru, Gumlu, and Burdekin School came together at the Home Hill Swimming Pool for a fun-filled day in the sun.

The senior students shone in their competitive races, while the junior students had a ball participating in waterfun rotations.

The competition was fierce during the day, with only 68 points separating the top three schools.

In the end, Giru State

School triumphed with a total of 294 points.

The average points winner was Millaroo State School, averaging 29.9 points per student.

Great sportsmanship and school spirit were on show during the day, with Osborne State School and Jarvisfield State School tied for the School Spirit Award.

ALTHOUGH restrictions have heavily impacted the school year, there’s been no stopping four Burdekin sports students from going for gold in their endeavours.

Liam Todeschino, Bella Linton, Daniel Schneider from Home Hill State High School, and former Ayr resident Maeghan Saldumbide from Townsville Grammar have received automatic qualification to represent Queensland in the National Track and Field Athletics.

With points accumulating from school sports events throughout the year and Athletics North Queensland

(ANQ) standards, the four will travel to Sydney in March next year to compete in their respective sports.

Liam will compete in Shot Put and Discus, Bella in Shot Put, Daniel in 300m Sprints and Javelin, with Maeghan taking on High Jump, 100m and 400m Sprints, Long Jump and Triple Jump.

Parent and local teacher Lisa Todeschino said that although it had been a unique year for sports, the nationals will be a fantastic opportunity.

“Because there was no Interschool Athletics Carnival, they only had their individual school carnivals,

which was a shame. There was no Burdekin carnival, no NQ, no state. It’s good that they’ve still been able to do this in the current environment.”

Liam, Bella, and Daniel are also partaking in the Sports Excellence Program at Home Hill High, allowing them to make the most of the training.

The Australian Track and Field Championships is the largest annual athletics event in the Oceania region set to host 3,500 athletes in March. Making the Burdekin representatives’ selection a notable achievement.

Firstly I’m going to chill out and then look for a job.

Grace Briant What was difficult about being in Year 12 during 2020?

For me, the deepest difficulty was not COVID-19 nor was it the external exams, it was more of a mental struggle because before I came to the wonderful school, Burdekin Christian College, I went to a school that was not supportive. I felt it did not care for me. So coming to this school truly challenged me to try because they were so incredibly supportive and lifted me up to a position where I felt worthy of the care and support they were giving me and here I am now with more confidence than ever before.

What was something you enjoyed in your Senior Year?

I felt myself enjoying the genuine connections I made during the course of my Grade 11 and 12 experience at this school and found myself enjoying the range of topics that I touched upon in my Modern History class.

What are you planning on doing after graduation?

My plans for after I finish this thirteen-year chapter of my life is to head to and prepare for my life as a university student. And to do so, I will be ‘steering’ my focus on getting my P plates.

Helena Cason What was difficult about being in Year 12 during 2020?

It was learning from home, yet it was a great experience for me, learning from a different perspective.

What was something I enjoyed in my Senior Year?

I enjoyed being with all the Year 12s at BCC and learning more about each other and growing with everyone from my grade.

What are you planning on doing after graduation?

I am planning to study full time at TAFE Queensland in a Certificate of Education and Diploma of Event Management.

What was difficult about being in Year 12 during 2020?

The most difficult thing was the amount of work we were handed and then required to remember for all the subjects.

What was something you enjoyed in your Senior Year?

I enjoyed all the times our grade did something together, such as all the fundraisers.

What are you planning on doing after graduation?

First thing I plan to do is go for my P plates, then apply for a gap year in the Australian Defence Force. If I don’t like my first role, I will either apply for something else in the Army or join the Police Force.

Samantha Dowie What was difficult about being in Year 12 during 2020?

Covid-19 was definitely the most difficult thing to deal with!

What was something you enjoyed in your Senior Year?

I loved the Graduation Ceremony at The Ville in Townsville.

What are you planning on doing after graduation?

I am planning on doing either a Bachelor Business or Bachelor of Nursing in Brisbane.

The most difficult things were experiencing all the ramifications to do with Covid-19 and also working extra hard in Year 12.

I enjoyed coming to school, helping our school librarian and all the school activities.

Being in year 12 in 2020 had its difficulties as Covid restricted events and activities that could have been great in our last year.

I really loved my time as a Year 12 student because I got to do what I chose to do. I also got to know those who had the same interests as me and learn about their other interests as well.

What are you planning on doing after graduation?

After school, I plan to work in construction with the certificate I got through school and TAFE or maybe come back to BCC and work as an Education Intern.

Ken Duncan is one of many Burdekin farmers diversifying their crops.

Marina Trajkovich WATERMELON and pumpkin farmer, Ken Duncan, hasn’t missed a Burdekin watermelon season in 42 years.

At 17, he ventured from Bundaberg to assist growers in harvesting their crops; eventually progressing into marketing and logistics and for the past 28 years, farming in his own right.

Ken talks about the running of his business alongside his wife, Sonia, as hundreds of watermelons wait in the warehouse packed and ready for despatch to conclude the season.

“My wife and I started with purchasing a second-hand

tractor,” he says.

Now with the harvest wrapping up for the year, Ken plans to diversify into other crops and is currently in the process of overseeing the planting of lemon and avocado trees on the property.

“Commercially, it’s something that’s a bit outside the square for the Burdekin.”

He hopes the new venture will provide financial security during off-harvest times currently experienced and provide steadier work for his employees throughout the year.

“One thing I’ve noticed working on the farms in the region is that horticulture is at a seasonal disadvantage as

we do wrap up and so don’t receive an income until next May.” Ken says he has been researching and consulting horticulture experts to deliver a successful crop, the rewards of which will come to fruition in two years for the lemons and four for the avocado trees.

“It’s a bit unknown. There are a lot of people who say it might not suit this area,” he says.

“Even though we’ve done a lot of research, there is no telling what the weather has in store with storms that may damage the trees. We are in uncharted waters trying to grow these crops on a large scale.”

“We’re planting windbreaks to protect the fruit and putting in a state of the art watering system to make sure there is enough moisture under the trees.”

“We believe we’ve done the research and are drawing information from established growers in other areas. We haven’t taken it lightly.”

Ken says he is looking forward to seeing the beautiful fruit trees; revealing dreams of an on-site cafe and farmers market for guests to enjoy as a possibility for the future.

“We’re very excited about it, we think about it daily. It’s a massive investment.”

Last cane crushed for 2020 WATERMELON and pumpkin farmer, Ken Duncan, hasn’t missed a Burdekin watermelon season in 42 years.

The last of Wilmar’s eight sugar mills crushed out yesterday, bringing an end to the 2020 season.

Victoria Mill in the Herbert region processed the last bin of cane just after 2.30pm on Sunday – several hours after the last cane went through the rollers at nearby Macknade Mill.

General Manager Operations Mike McLeod said Wilmar’s eight mills processed a total of 14.925 million tonnes of sugarcane this year, to manufacture more than two million tonnes of raw sugar.

“Our total throughput was slightly down on preseason estimates due to dry conditions in three of our four

Inkerman and Pioneer mills both crushed out on Saturday morning. Inkerman finished at 2.14am Sunday with a total of 1.64 million tonnes and Pioneer at 9.52am Sunday with a total of 1.62 million tonnes.

Average weekly CCS increased to 15.0 units. The season average CCS of 14.60 units finished slightly above budget.

Burdekin Singers and Theatre Company presents

Mary Poppins – The Broadway Musical

The Burdekin Singers and Theatre Company are back with another full-cast production, bringing the magic and wonder of the world of Mary Poppins to the Burdekin Theatre in February 2021.

We checked in with some of the cast to see how the show is coming along.

KIM NUTTALL Kim will be portraying Mary Poppins in the show.

“It’s been very, very busy and quite an early start to really heavy rehearsals, with the size of the show.

There are a few things that are different; we don’t have an orchestra, so we’re using backing tracks, which just adds another layer of complexity to the process.”

Involved with the Burdekin Singers since she was a child, Kim has been performing yearly for the past 28 years.

Kim says she is most excited about getting to fly as Mary Poppins.

“She gets to fly, and other than that, I think it’s the challenge of being able to play such an iconic part. I think people are coming with expectations of who Mary is and what she’s going to do. So it’s about balancing expectations but also being in a place where I can create my own uniqueness in the part.

“Given what 2020 has been like, it’s the opportunity to have a bit of magic. Coming into peoples’ lives at the beginning of 2021, I think we could all do with a bit of magic and wonder and a beautiful feel-good story that has a happy ending. It’s just such a beautiful show for children to see as well, as a family orientated space.”

MITCHELL PEARCE Mitchell plays the part of Bert, the Chimneysweep.

“It’s been fun getting the show together with the cast so far, it seems to be all coming

together pretty well, with the short amount of time we’ve got this year.

Mitchell’s first Burdekin Singers show was five years ago, in 2015.

“My favourite part about this year would have to be being my first time getting the lead male role. So it’s really exciting to be able to put my best effort in and try to make everybody happy with how I’m doing.”

Restrictions meant the group had an unusually late start to the rehearsal period.

“We’ve just had to have more rehearsals every week, we’ve started a bit later than we usually do. Usually, we only have a rehearsal every week for a couple of months before, but we’ve just gone straight into it this year.

This is going to be an excellent show. If you’ve seen our shows before you know they’re great quality and this one is going to be no different, despite all the challenges we’ve faced.”

AYDEN BARNETT Ayden plays Michael Banks in the show.

“Rehearsals are hectic, but we’re definitely getting there, and it’s really fun nonetheless to see everybody improve. I’m really excited to perform it to everybody.”

Ayden has been performing with the Burdekin Singers for three or four years now; his first production being Elf Junior.

“This is my second senior production, after Beauty and the Beast this year.”

Ayden said he is enjoying the rehearsal process so far.

“The show’s set in London, most characters have to have a posh accent, so I have to focus on getting my vowels really open and get that accent down pat.

“I hope to see you there at the show!”

MIA GALBRAITH Mia plays Jane Banks in the production.

“You get a lot done through the hours. I’m excited because a lot of my friends

are going to come and see it.

I’ve been doing the Singers for a few years, but this is my first time in the seniors.”

Mia said she loves performing and is excited to be part of the production.

“I’m looking forward to being able to show it to everyone because it’s a really good show and it’s coming along really well. I think that the audience is going to like it too.

“Come and watch it, go get your tickets before they sell out!”

U15 Burdekin Junior Rugby League Team

Roosters Club Of Origin series HORNETS will be going all out to retain the George Woodhead Memorial Shield when they take part in the Roosters Club Of Origin series at Rugby Park this Saturday.

Hornets were the last winners of the trophy after the Home Hill Devils had been victorious in the two years before that.

The Hornets Officials have been busy getting their team together, and they have assembled a group with youth and experience thrown in.

Young under 17 players Rhett Williams and Dudley Dotoi could prove the difference between the teams on a day expected to be a hot one.

Williams is a classy half while Dotoi is a name that will be heard of in the North for years to come.

From Bowen, Dotoi attends Kirwan High but plays for the Roosters where he is a prolific

try scorer.

The team should be given plenty of ball from scrums by dangerous hooker Tyrone Sims while Roosters firstgrader Jason Reid will do a lot of the hard stuff up front.

The Home Hill Devils are a team that has a giant forward pack lead by North Queensland representatives Mitchell Guy and Ryan Davenport.

Throw in former Queensland Ranger Craig Snell and the giant Blake Hollywood, and you have a big but lively group.

Luke Carrett will ensure the Hill gets plenty of ball from hooker.

Roosters fullback Joel Mason can consider himself unlucky that COVID struck this year. He was favoured to gain the Townsville number one and who knows what would have happened after that.

He will play for Colts on Saturday joining the experienced Kurt Perry and Zac Heron.

Perry is a former Cowboys and Marlins player and can be a dangerous player in possession while Heron goes down as the man who featured in the Roosters last A Grade T D R L Grand Final scoring a try after the siren.

Brothers appear to be the dark horse of the competition, but they do have some experience and up and comers.

Riley Horan is a sneaky customer, and he can score a try from the halves at will.

One thing he knows that if he makes a break, Jerome Lacco or Lona Kaifoto will be right beside him.

Kaifoto has played Queensland Cup for both the Blackhawks and Mackay Cutters, and nothing much gets past him.

Lacco backs up all day and has scored many a try by doing that.

The games will start on Saturday at 2.30 and played over two fifteen-minute halves.

There will be no time off for injuries during the early games, but there will be in the final, timed to get underway at 7.30.

The main curtain raiser will see the Burdekin under 12 teams in action... Blue and Red. The Blue team were Townsville Junior Rugby League premiers this season while the Red team just missed out on being finalists.

There are some exciting young players here, and this should be a spectacle.

After the games, a top band will play to keep spectators bopping away to the small hours.

Daniel Wilson has been part of the Youth team this year, making it his eighth year with the club.

He said his time with Burdekin would be one to remember.

“It’s pretty good, we’re always included throughout the whole year. We all got to know each other. From Under 10s, I’ve been playing with some of those guys, and to come up to now, it’s just a regularity really, that I come up and play with them,” Daniel said.

Daniel’s father, Gordon, said the commitment to the sport has become routine.

“This year was the hardest for us because games were mostly on a Friday night. That meant sometimes getting off work a little bit early to get to games on time. Then we wouldn’t get home until one in the morning.”

Again, it comes down to quality family time on the road.

“There was one week we did about 1200 kilometres altogether because we’d be up in Ayr on Thursday for training, and up to Townsville for a game on Friday, and then back for a game on Sunday. But we wouldn’t change it for the world. It’s a good experience,” he said.

Gordon has also been involved over the years with assistant coaching, allowing

him to get to know the players through regular seasons and carnivals.

“That’s his team, really,” he said.

Daniel graduated Year 12 recently, meaning his time with the club has sadly come to an end, but he is taking his soccer skills into further education.

“I’ve applied for sports science at JCU in Townsville, and a few universities in Perth as well. Sport is the main thing in my life, and I’d like to keep up with it.”

“We’ve really enjoyed the experience. It’s been a big part of our weekends for a long time. For us as parents, we go to the games, and now we’re going to have to find something to do.”

The Burdekin Football Club community has been an accepting one, making the Wilson’s time all the more enjoyable.

“We’ve all got on with the other parents and the kids, and that team has been a core group that’s gone through. We all get on really well,” Gordon said.

Burdekin Football Club President, Laurence Dal Santo, recognised the boys’ commitment at the recent presentation night.

“They have a round trip of approximately five hours.

That is commitment. So to the Todd and Wilson families, thank you very much for your support.”

30 SPORTS RESULTS Ayr Golf Club

A good field of thirty-four players last Thursday and four-ball event was played.

The winners were Chris Mann and Shaun McShane with thirty points, second was Peter Henderson and Paul Mulcahy with twenty-eight points.

Junior Club Championships This Saturday will see our Junior Club hold it’s 2019-2020 season club championships. This is an early finish for the children as we did start the season early to avoid high tides and the possibility of early marine problems.

Our club has already attended surf carnivals at Forrest Beach, Picnic Bay and Mackay.

This Saturday will give our members good competition for the following weekend when the North Barrier Branch Championships will be held at Sarina Beach.

We are asking patents and members to be at the club house by 12clock, so we can set up tents and other equipment for the day, with an expected start time of 1pm.

What a day it will be, with our under six to under 14 age groups competing in all beach, boards and swimming events.

As you all know we cannot have events in front of the club house so everyone please follow Yongala Drive to the beach.

It is expected competition will finish around 3pm and then it is back to the club house for the presentation of trophies and awards.

The two major memorial awards will be announced at this time, the Margaret Webber Memorial for the Junior Life Saver of the Year, and the Jack Sartori Memorial Trophy for the most consistent allrounder.

It would be wonderful to see all our trophy donors, life members, parents, grand parents and supporters attend and cheer on our future life savers.

The club as usual will supply dinner for everyone which is always wonderful food.

If anyone wishers to bring some sweets down for after wards it would be most welcome.

Two games were contested on Friday night. In the pairs, Wayne Coonan and Rino Lazzarin got off to a good start with Ross McLaughlin and Ray Paneccassio waking up in the second half mounting a fightback, but it was too little too late with Rino and Wayne cruising to victory.

In the triples, the trio of Damian Morello, Lyn Storrie and Gary Pearce started off with intent,

only for Margaret McLaughlin, Doug Kiehne and Joe Yipanazar to kick into gear with a dominant display of precision bowls to take out the match.

On Sunday, the action heated up with three matches.

The first pairs match was a tight tussle with the lead seesawing between the duo of Graham Male and Mick McCloskey, and that of Dave Sheehan and Ray Paneccassio. Graham and Mick scraped home for a one shot victory on the last end.

In the second pairs match, Joe Yipanazar and Ken Ferguson constructed a strategic win over the outclassed duo Merv Wilshere and Rino Lazzarin.

In the triples the trio of Henry Hazel, Kev Collins and Gary Pearce played out potentially the luckiest combination of bowling to overcome the perplexed trio of Damian Morello, Jamie Woods and Leo Kenny.

On Sunday December 6, at 10:00am, the Club AGM will be held. This will be followed by the Presidents Ham Day with names in by 1:00pm for a 1:30pm start. Teams will be club drawn and bowls attire is to be worn.

Home Hill Community Sports Club

On Saturday, the Karl Rummeny Family Fun Day was held at the Home Hill Community Sports Club. What a fantastic day it turned out to be. Karls kids and grandkids all lined up for a game of bowls with their grandad. All club players were teamed up with two new players for a game of triples.

That’s Karls favourite game, so that is what he got. There were some very good young players who had never played before, and some showed a lot of potential. It is a pity that these young players are not given the chance to develop their natural ability. All games were played in good spirit and there was plenty of fun and laughter on the green.

Third prize Wayne Newton, Brett Mathews and Jack Webb. Nearest the spider was Steve Doig. This was enjoyed by all players and it was the first time that many saw it played. I think the kids were trying to kill it, because most of the bowls ended up in the ditch. We played twelve ends and finished early enough to socialise with family and friends.

There were twenty touchers at five dollars each, and they were much appreciated by the young players. The lucky door prizes were Savahna Jarvis First Prize, Wayne Newton and Luke Arthur Runners up. Many thanks go to Heather and the ladies, and Steve, Russel and Tony for their continued support to the club events.

Then the party started with a BBQ and cutting of Karl’s ninety-seventh birthday cake.

He is still as competitive as ever and I’m sure that he will make the big one. In all, a top family

JUNIOR touch finished strongly in the last of the 2020 games on Friday. The Eathorne’s SportsPower junior competition for children aged between 7 and 12 years saw some teams playing on half fields and those with more experience playing on a full field. The final game was played between Red and Yellow teams, with Red being the final winners. Kidz Touch is played by younger children who are still learning the game. With nearly 150 playing every Friday afternoon, it has been a very successful season.

Congratulations to the organising committee of Rebecca Watson, Sherrie Power, Lauren Chapman and Tramayne Horan for providing a great competition for the players in a COVID environment.

Home Hill Junior Cricket

There was a glitch with the electronic scorebook in the U13s at Home Hill this week; the batters that made runs included Thomas Cardillo 22, Leo Olditch 21, and Rowdy King 20. Ethan Pengelly took a few wickets, but his exact figures were unavailable when this report

was written.

A week of low scores on Friday in the U15s, with Corey Heidke on top of the bowlers on his way to 21 runs not out; Lucas Town also putting his head down scoring 16.

Matteo Felesina was bowling a nice line and length, snaring 3 wickets for 12 runs, Rian Berryman had safe hands taking three catches.

The Home Hill U13 Blue team had another home game, this week against Wests.

We won the toss and chose to bowl first, bowling them out in the 28th over for 99 runs.

The run chase didn’t go to plan, with only Cooper Lando reaching double figures with 13.

Emily Town and Eamon Casey

frustrated the opposition, digging in for a four-over partnership.

Emily then combined with Cooper Lando for another five overs.

We fell short of Wests’ total and were all out in the 19th over for 64 runs.

After their win last week our U15 Luke Feldman Trophy Team came back with a crash on Saturday against Wests in Townsville.

We lost the toss and were sent to bat. Runs were hard to make, losing our first six batters for 20 runs. The next three batters were out for ducks, bringing Brock Harrington and Thomas Cardillo together for a last wicket stand of 39 runs.

We ended up being all out for only 71 runs off 25 overs.

Credit to the boys who didn’t give up in defending the difficult score.

Even when Wests passed our score in the 17th over, they continued to put in the effort and bowled them out.

Our best bowler was Nate Di Bartolo, who got 2 wickets for 9 runs, followed by Kailan Tustin with 2 for 10.

Brock Harrington got my unofficial player of the match backing up his fine batting with two wickets, and combining with his opening bowling partner Nate to grab two catches.

and helpers in the canteen was terrific,’’ said Burdekin Touch president Tramayne Horan. “The games could not have occurred without their involvement. We look forward to all the kids returning in term 2 next year as well as some of the older players joining the under 14 competition on Wednesday afternoons.’’

This is the first of the Burdekin Touch Association Competition finals. The Under 14 Touch Competition finals and the Senior Mixed Competition semi-finals are being played on Wednesday, 2 December with the Senior Grand Finals on Friday, 4 December.

Spectators are welcome but are reminded to check-in using the QR code available at the touch grounds or sign the attendance sheet so that contact tracing can be managed if necessary. The bar will be open as usual.

From Bowen to Burdekin Damon Todd

A team to call home for two young footballers Hayden Menso WITH the Burdekin Football season over, many celebrations have been in order after a successful term on the pitch.

Their dedication to the sport goes above and beyond what anyone would expect for two members and their families of the Burdekin Panthers Football Club.

Daniel Wilson and Damon Todd come from Bowen, where they live, attend

school, and have grown up.

However, the decision to commit to soccer meant they had to choose a side; when the competition’s boundaries were changed, and Bowen moved into the Whitsunday region, it was either the Burdekin or Mackay.

Damon plays in the Burdekin’s Under 15s side, with Daniel taking part in the Youth team.

Damon began playing soccer when he was six

years old at the Bowen club, moving into the Burdekin team for representative football during Under 10s.

“We trained in Bowen and then travelled to train with Burdekin in the rep team,” Damon’s mother Nadia said.

“The Burdekin we love; there was better training, everything about the Burdekin was better. We were much happier than where we were,” she said.

With the commitment

construction underway currently, so we have decided to share where we are up to in our continuing development.

We have recently completed an upgrade to the female toilets, bringing them up to a very modern standard with the help of

community benefit fund grants. We have also currently applied for other grants through both the government and other grant providers.

These grants will allow us to upgrade more of the facilities within the current stadium, including both of the change

being so huge, the family had to make sure it was the right club to join .

“I like the people there; everyone’s very accepting and easy to talk to,” Damon said.

Damon was awarded the Most Consistent of the U15s team at presentations this year, saying, “it’s good to get that acknowledgement.”

“Everyone merged and got on really well and worked together, which is what team sports are all about,” Nadia said.

The drive from Bowen is nothing short of a mammoth

effort, made multiple times to attend training and gameplay.

“We would travel on a Tuesday; I’d pick Damon up from school, leaving Bowen at three o’clock, race to the Burdekin for training at 4:30 till dark, and then get home 7:30/8. The weekends would be Townsville or Burdekin games, so towards the end, when there were 8 o’clock games, we had to be in Townsville at 7 am. So, it’s leaving home at 4:30 or overnighting in Townsville.”

Although the travel would be a lot for some, the Todds

have grown accustomed to it.

“It’s a good time in the car to spend and talk to the kids.

I actually quite enjoy the travelling time, you really get to know each other.

Nadia said the commitment to the Burdekin side was a great decision.

“The parents are friendly, and the club’s been really generous. We do just love coming and taking part in it all.”

With dreams to travel on exchange and participate in

rooms, the male toilets, the Referee’s room and the accessible toilets. These items are essential to the future longevity of the club.

With grants from the State and Federal Governments, together with a Burdekin Shire Council loan, we have been able to progress with the redevelopment of our outside courts.

The redevelopment involves the total clearing of the outside court facility to a bare patch, then fulfilling all of the necessary planning and development rules and regulations to be able to construct the new concrete playing surface. The intention of this is to provide better playing facilities for the club and to welcome new members and players to the ranks. Many other community groups will also

be able to make use of these facilities for a variety of sports and events. Columns added to the outside of the courts will eventually provide a shelter over the courts and in the future, be fully enclosed to create another stadium.

This process has been time-consuming with authorisation, building plans, drainage plans, council approvals and such.

However, in the end, we are still getting plenty of items completed. We are adhering to grant outlines, due dates and everything that goes with it. Still, due to COVID striking this year, delays were inevitable. We even had a huge stoppage in play, which in turn hurt our financial position as a club.

We have, however, powered through with our plans with enthusiasm. And with the

continued improvements inside the existing stadium such as the repairs carried out to the upstairs court viewing area and bar, we are all empowered by our achievements.

We hope to have all of the other required components completed, including a cover over both courts and an outdoor dining area between the outside courts and the existing stadium by the start of next year. We are always looking for sponsors to partner with us and have a lot of work ahead of us.
