FIRST EVER ORIGIN GAME COMES TO TOWNSVILLE Daniel Shirkie THE first blow has been struck in the 2021 State of Origin series, with Queensland coming out the better after fierce negotiations across the weekend resulted in Townsville becoming the new home of game one.

The Maroons will now have some breathing room at the start of the series, with back-to-back games on home territory following the NRL’s decision to move the series opener scheduled for Melbourne.

A COVID-19 outbreak in Victoria’s capital city put the opener’s staging on wobbly legs, before the North Queensland fortress at Queensland Country Bank Stadium was put forward as an alternative option.

A NSW counter-offer of the Parramatta Eels’ home turf of Bankwest was optioned as well, but according to NRL. COM, the organisation’s bio-security experts made the decision to take the first game up north, convinced it was the safest of the available options.

NRL CEO Andrew Abdo stated that the ultimate decision, made by the Australian Rugby League Commission, was accepted by Blues coach Brad Fittler and the New South Wales Rugby League governing body.

“The primary driver for this is the continuity of the competition and the least amount of biosecurity risk given all the variables that we face at the moment,” Abdo told NRL.COM. “In terms of football fairness, there are multiple elements to that. We alternate every year with NSW and Queensland being guaranteed a live game.”

A tentative 20-man squad has already been named by incoming Maroons coach Paul Green, with the former North Queensland Cowboys mentor picking three hometown heroes to round out his lineup.

Kyle Feldt, Coen Hess and Valentine Holmes have all been named as options for the starting line-up that will take to the field on June 9 in Townsville.

Marina Trajkovich SEVENTEEN new employees from Lower Burdekin Water have gained their suicide intervention certificates during a one-day training session with Ross Romeo, the Burdekin coordinator of CORES. The training provided an opportunity for staff to learn the warning signs that someone may be struggling with their mental health and approaches to intervention and seeking further support.

Charles Papale, the operations manager from Lower Burdekin Water, said that the intervention training was part of the companies focus on promoting mental health within the organisation and beyond.

“We’ve been doing a lot of training over the last few years, about health and safety

but also the side of mental health as well,” said Charles.

“They talked about some of the signs that someone might be experiencing mental health issues. I would recommend the training to anyone,” he said.

“The whole purpose of the CORES training is to get people to come out and talk about it before anything happens. Some of the statistics that were thrown out are horrific. More people die in Australia from suicide than they do in traffic accidents in a day,” said Charles.

“There’s a number of reasons people could be thinking of ending their life.

It could be gambling. It could be drugs, financial issues.

Through the training, we’re able to point them in the right direction to get help,” he said.

like the Suicide Intervention Training course with Lower Burdekin Water is crucial in promoting productive conversations about mental health and that it’s great to see more businesses getting involved.

“All across different communities, workplaces are becoming more proactive in this area. People are becoming more aware of not just worker’s mental health but their families as well,” said Ross.

He says that CORES will visit workplaces free of charge to offer potentially life-saving training to employees and invites them to help start conversations about mental health.

“To us, it’s great that more workplaces are reaching out to us. We’ve already done a lot of work with businesses in the Burdekin. It’s a credit to those workplaces that they’re showing the initiative.

“It does give staff the skills to use if they run into someone down the line in their work or personal life.

They’re important skills to get out there.”

77 77 “No viable local detour” means motorists may have to add hours to their travel time by taking the longer route via Charters Towers

Daniel Shirkie DRIVERS who won’t be able to make it to the Burdekin River Bridge during the allotted one-hour period scheduled during Monday night’s closure have been

advised to ‘avoid the area’ by transport officials.

In response to a request for official advice on available detours and alternative routes around the bridge, which will close for trial repairs between 7pm on Monday June 7

and 6am Tuesday June 8, a Transport and Main Roads spokesperson said travellers should ‘make alternative plans’.

“Given there is no viable local detour, motorists who cannot make it to the bridge in time for the one-hour opening are advised to avoid the area and make alternative plans,” the spokesperson told the Burdekin Local News.

“The closure, programmed to coincide with Queensland Rail maintenance works when trains won’t be running, will allow us to trial replacing a corroded sloping cord brace on the bridge.

“This trial will inform a works program for repairs to the remaining 39 sloping cord braces.”

They also noted that travel through Collinsville and Charters Towers to avoid the bridge entirely is expected to add an additional four hours onto travel north of the Burdekin River Bridge.

A second bridge closure, originally planned for Tuesday evening has been cancelled, after a review of the

procedures and work involved determined it would no longer be necessary.

“A second closure originally planned for Tuesday evening (8 June) is no longer required, as we expect to complete the sloping cord brace repair trial during the Monday night closure,” the spokesperson said.

“Working at night will allow the work to be completed as quickly and safely as possible, when traffic volumes are low.

“We have done our best to alert locals, transport operators and other highway users of these closures ahead of time, to avoid excessive traffic queuing.”

In order to allow for mill, hospital and emergency workers to travel across the bridge during the Monday night closure, the department has provided a one-hour window between 11.30pm on Monday and 12.30am Tuesday in which any queued vehicles waiting to pass over the Bridge will be directed through by traffic controllers.

“Only those vehicles queued at the bridge during

the one-hour opening will be permitted to cross and motorists should expect delays,” the spokesperson said.

“Outside of this one-hour opening, only emergency service vehicles will be permitted to travel through the work zone.

“Non-emergency service vehicles will not be permitted through the closure for any reason.”

The spokesperson for the department recommended that any travellers planning to head north across the bridge should adjust their plans.

“We recommend motorists delay travel through this area unless necessary,” the spokesperson said.

“We would like to thank motorists for their patience and understanding during these important works.”

Council scores high praise for virtual festival effort Daniel Shirkie BURDEKIN Shire Council have been recognised for their quick-thinking, with an award celebrating their achievements in holding the virtual Sweet Days, Hot Nights Festival last year.

Council took out the ‘Doing More With Less’ category in the 2021 Local Government Awards for Excellence.

The award, which seeks to highlight efforts involving lateral thinking and creativity, was awarded to the shire’s council officers after last year’s

festival was forced to go online.

The normal planning and procedures for hosting the annual event had to be thrown out the window in response to the COVID-19 pandemic and lockdown restrictions that were in place last year.

Burdekin Shire Council Mayor Lyn McLaughlin thanked all involved for their work, saying the award was especially prevalent as it was announced at the same time as preparations for this year’s event were in full swing.

“The timing of the award is ironic; none of the Officers

involved could tune in for the announcement as they were at the Home Hill Showgrounds in preparation for the 2021 festival,” Mrs McLaughlin said.

“I want to thank Local Government Managers Australia for recognising the fantastic work of Burdekin Shire Council, and congratulate the Officers involved in delivering the 2020 virtual Sweet Days, Hot Nights Festival which has earned us this award.”

Marina Trajkovich FOR helicopter pilot and aerial worker, Ryan Jones, competing in the Tatts Finke Desert Race from Alice Springs to the small community of Finke is a family affair.

The Jones’ have been travelling from Jarvisfield to Alice Springs since 2018, as Ryan prepares for the challenging, two-day off-road race through the red dirt of Australia’s Northern Territory.

He’s been doing the final checks on his off-road buggy, ready to take on the iconic desert race this June eleventh.

“This will be my third time out there; I really enjoy it. It’s the Northern Territories big event of the year. The whole town just lives for it,” says Ryan.

“I just love it. It’s freedom, and when you’re out there, the track is lined by 1500 spectators. You’ve got these people cheering you on the whole way,” he says.

“There’s a big street party in Alice Springs before the race kicks off.”

Ryan became familiar with the racing community in Ayr when he joined the Burdekin Offroaders club.

On Saturday, he’ll head off with the other Tatts Finke competitors and club members for the 2000 km road trip to Alice Springs, accompanied by his family and with racing buggy in tow.

When they get to Alice, he’ll start readying its engine for the main event.

The race is open to both experienced and novice competitors, taking to the Territory to compete by motorbike, buggy, quad bike or off-road car for the 460 km course from Alice Springs to Finke and back.

On Sunday, the race officially kicks off with 170 race cars and pro buggies and 650 motorbikes competing in the event.

“Everyone’s competitive. I don’t believe people go there not to win. The people going three, five, ten times are there for a reason, and they want to win. We give it a red hot crack, and it does come down

to driver ability and vehicle preparation,” says Ryan.

When the race kicks off, Ryan will take to the off-road track while his wife and service crew drive the service track beside it, his two young kids in the car beside them.

On the first evening of the race, the over 3,000 racers and support people will camp in Aputula, enjoying a display of fireworks and overnight rest before finishing the race back to Alice Springs.

“The kids just love it. They get in the red dirt, and it’s just a different world. You hop in a car and drive for three days.

For me, it’s a reprieve. I just get in my own head and enjoy the solitude of driving through Australia,” says Ryan.

“When we get to Alice Spring, we’re doing something we really enjoy, meet heaps of people and have a holiday,” he says.

The men of the association, family members and special guests all joined in on the celebrations to remark on the momentous occasion and everything that’s been achieved over the years.

Political leaders such as Mayor Lyn McLaughlin, Member for Burdekin Dale Last and Member for Dawson George Christensen were all on deck for the celebration.

They were invited to share their thanks and praises during a morning tea emceed by John Furnell.

Led first by a prayer from financial member Peter Corino that expressed the group’s gratitude and thanks for the help they’ve received over the years, the speeches commemorated members past and present who have worked throughout the years to transform the Ayr Scouts building into a home for the Burdekin Men’s Shed.

President Rob Ritchie thanked all who attended for taking the time to mark the occasion.

“COVID-19 has slowed us down a bit, but it’s good to say and to see that we’re coming back,” Mr Ritchie said.

The Townsville University Hospital emergency department has been given a $1.6 million refurbishment, expanding its paediatric treatment area to improve facilities for families in need of emergency care. The refurbishment introduced a new waiting area for children and families and expanded the number of hospital beds from seven to twelve. Minister for Health and Ambulance Services Yvette D’Ath officially unveiled the expansion this week.

REVVED UP SPEEDWAY TAKES OFF IN LATE JULY

Matt Mingay and the Hot Wheels Stunt Show will be on deck for the Speedway’s return

Daniel Shirkie IT’S been a long time coming, but the revamp of the Brandon Speedway could soon be in the rear-view mirror.

An inaugural event is scheduled for the end of July, thanks to the efforts of new owner Deon Lynd and his team, with a slate of racing events scheduled for the close of the month.

Mr Lynd, who’s spent plenty of time behind the wheel of a sidecar and was even crowned as Tasmania’s Sidecar Speedway Champion in the 80s, has spent plenty of time putting the pedal to the floor at the Pioneer Park Speedway, and is eager to see it back up and running and better than ever.

“I am ostentatious, I like to do things big, bad and bold and I don’t want to do anything average,” Mr Lynd said.

“I want to get sidecars back to where it should be, back to the blue ribbon event that I’ve always seen it as.”

The first event, dubbed the ‘Sugar Bowl 10000’, is set to be just one of many meetings held at the revamped track.

“As long as the spectator base is there, it’ll keep getting bigger and bigger,” Mr Lynd said.

“We’re going to try to make my track the biggest and baddest in the country.”

The meeting will be largely focused on

sidecars, with a number of other events also supported, and a $10,000 prize pool for contestants.

“In a nutshell, we’re having a huge sidecar meeting with the Sugar Bowl 10000, that’s the total of the prize money and we’ll break it down into $6,000, $2,000, $1,500 and $500 in the final,” Mr Lynd said.

“We’ll have solo support, we’ll be supporting the classic sidecars, there’ll be Formula 400 support and we’ll be bringing along the new legend cars as a demo.

“That’s the racing program for the day, but we’ll also have the Matt Mingay Hot Wheel Stunt Show and Ryan Douglas in his LUXifer Hilux burnout car, we thought the people in the Burdekin would really get a kick out of that.”

The attractions won’t stop there, with a number of top-flight, well credentialed riders expected to make the trek north to Pioneer Park.

“We’ll have some of the best riders current and past coming to ride my bikes as contract riders throughout the season,” Mr Lynd said.

“Trent Hedlund, an ex-aussie champion, Justin Plaisted, an ex-aussie champion, Darren Nash, who won a best pair, so he’s a champion from Western Australia.”

Mr Lynd says if all goes well, he’ll be targeting a steady schedule of shows and events in the coming years.

“We’ve got four to six big sidecar events coming each year and three burnouts,” Mr Lynd said.

“We’ll have to come up with new names each time, this one we took from Burdekin being in the sugar belt and the Chili Bowl for Nascar in America.”

In addition to everything else, Mr Lynd is also hoping to hire locally for workers for the events, with paid positions available as bar staff, parking attendants, cleaners, food preparation and canteen workers for the July 31 event.

Zonta Club need volunteers to make a thousand birthing kits Marina Trajkovich THE Burdekin’s Zonta women will soon be assembling a thousand birthing kits that will help save the lives of mothers and babies in developing countries around the world.

The initiative, one of the International Zonta Club’s most recognised recurring projects, works with the Birthing Kit Foundation Australia to deliver the kits, which are designed to give women in poor communities around the world a chance at a healthy and safe birth.

Isabel Stubbs, the president of the Burdekin’s Zonta Club says that the sterile kits are crucial in preventing disease and illness for both mother and baby, who may not have access to a hospital or sterile conditions.

“Each birthing kit saves two lives, it saves the life of the mother and her child,” says Isabel.

“Zonta is an international group so we like to help out with international projects

as well as local projects. This is one way that we can do that. This is a way we can save lives without physically going over there. It’s just a part of what Zonta does to empower women and girls,” she says.

The disposable kits have been designed in line with recommendations from the World Health Organisation to

provide the basics for a clean, safe birth, reducing the risk of infection for both mother and carer.

On June 5th, volunteers will be gathering at St Francis Primary School to create a thousand kits, using the money raised at the Zonta Club’s International Women’s Day event and fundraiser in March.

Once the kits have been delivered to the chosen country, Isabel will receive more information about the kits whereabouts and how they’ve helped that particular community.

Past recipients of the Birthing Kit Foundation’s birthing kits include Ethiopia, Nigeria, Uganda, the

Democratic Republic of Congo, Papua New Guinea, India and Nepal.

At just five dollars per kit to produce, the six items inside can be life-changing for each woman and her baby, with kits delivered to rural communities.

The kits contain a plastic sheet to prevent contact between the mother and the ground or unhygienic surface, soap to wash the birth attendants hands and the mother before the birth and gloves to protect the attendant’s hands from illnesses such as HIV. The kit also contains gauze to wipe the babies eyes after

it’s born and separate gauze used to clean the mother prior to birth. Cord ties cleanly tie the umbilical cord while a sterile blade reduces the risk of newborn tetanus and sepsis.

“Everybody that does come says it’s an enjoyable day. It’s a community activity and people are able to help others in foreign countries,” says Isabel.

“We do need that community support. We have grandmothers and their daughters coming, school children are also welcome. We do make it fun,” she says.

The assembly day takes place Saturday 5th June, 10.30am -1.30pm at St Francis Primary School.

Daniel Shirkie A social event that brought both good vibes and musical cheer is set to resume in the coming weeks.

Organiser Mary Pattinson says the fortnightly Community Sing Along that was unfortunately shut down during COVID is aiming to start up again soon, with those looking to belt out a few high notes welcome to join the group at the Queens Hotel.

According to Ms Pattinson, a former school teacher, the idea came about as a result of her and a co-worker’s shared love of the performing arts.

“Myself and Sandra are both retired school teachers, we decided the year before last that we wanted to provide something through the joy of singing that was relaxing

and was good for people,” Ms Pattinson said.

“We researched a lot of studies about singing and the benefits of it and during COVID we saw a lot of communal singing types of events, held online and things like that.”

The meetings were previously held at the Kalamia Hotel, but has since moved to the Queens Hotel, both of which Ms Pattinson thanked for their support.

While COVID put a stop to the singing and celebrating for the duration of the lockdown, Ms Pattinson says the group wanted to keep the pub choir atmosphere when they returned.

“We decided we’d like to have it in a pub and we called it the sing-along happy hour.

It’s a little bit like going out to

workout for an hour or so, this is like a singing workout for an hour,” Ms Pattinson said.

“All it involves is putting up a set of songs, we usually do about twenty each week, and you get together and you sing from one song to the next.

“You don’t have to be a singer, a lot of times people were thinking we were a choral group or something like that, but it’s not, everyone likes to sing and everyone has their favourite songs, there’s no pressure attached to it.”

Ms Pattinson says the decision to have a social singing group was partly influenced by the perceived health benefits, citing studies that have found a number of healthier outcomes in those that engage in group singing.

“It’s a natural antidepressant, it lowers your stress levels and it helps you sleep,” Ms Pattinson said.

“There’s no microphones involved, you’re just there singing at your own volume, we’ve even had people who came along to be part of it, but didn’t want to sing, they just wanted to share in it and listen.”

The events, which are free and welcome to all, will be run from Tuesday, June 8 between 6 and 7pm at the Queens hotel.

GILBERT TAKES AUSTRALIAN HAND CANE-CUTTING CHAMPIONSHIP CROWN Daniel Shirkie BRAGGING rights, and a suitably shaped trophy, have both been taken home by Tully’s Stuart Gilbert after a gruelling battle in the heat.

Gilbert, whose family has a longstanding association with the top three spots in the annual Australian Hand Cane Cutting Championships, was grateful for the chance to lift the silverware high after an all-day battle in wearying conditions.

With family and friends cheering him on from the sidelines, Gilbert crushed his way through his section of cane to get the better of five other competitors in the finals, including family members Adam and Keith.

Gilbert finished up in the finals with a time of 28 minutes and nine seconds, a far cry from his attempts in previous years in which he featured in the novice cup and was a runner up to brother Adam’s three championship wins.

in Tony Felesina, but the Tully based banana farmer found himself lurching into the lead late on with a strong push through the back half of the finals.

The taxing, blistering work continued at pace until it was all but wrapped up, with an exhausted field of competitors sharing a few handshakes and words of encouragement.

“I’m feeling pretty good about it all, it’s a hell of a long way to come down from Tully, so it felt really good to make it all worth it,” Mr Gilbert said following the win.

“It’s definitely worth it and it’s not just the trophy or the prize, I get all the bragging rights for the year as well.”

Adam Gilbert held his own in the 35s - 55s category, taking out a win there, while 71-year-old Bill Matthews had a strong showing in the over 55s category as a first time competitor, taking the trophy home to Proserpine after a fast and efficient showing with the cane knife.

finalist, thanking friends and family, and his day-trade as a banana and cane farmer in Tully, for preparing him.

“Cane and bananas are our trade, it’s pretty physical, so it’s been good preparation for this competition day-after-day,” Mr Gilbert said.

“It was pretty normal in the lead-up, there was a lot of hoping it all came together on the day and thankfully, it did.”

Although the preparation may not have been out of the ordinary, the atmosphere was something special, with over 6,000 people arriving over the course of the three day event, and a committed crowd of

onlookers cheering on the cane-cutters as they battled each other and the heat.

“It’s always really good to be a part of that,” Mr Gilbert said.

“Myself and the whole family are always looking forward to this every year, so it’s always good to see just how many people are coming out and looking to get involved.

“Having the family there cheering me on is probably what got me over the line, to be honest, they really pushed me and it’s always good to have their support, especially with that big drive down from Tully.”

Couple grateful to police following tyre travesty

Marina Trajkovich A couple has been blown away by the generosity of locals and police after they were left stranded on the side of the road with their caravan, which had severely damaged tyres.

The couple, Sandra and Hilton Brown from Harrington, NSW had been holidaying in Queensland and on the way to the Burdekin from Guthalungra before being stopped by locals who had noticed smoke billowing from the van.

to help the couple, who had damaged their tyres while driving.

It is unknown how the tyres became mangled but Sandra says the pair were grateful to have been stopped.

“We were just so blown away by the people who went out of their way to help us,” said Sandra Hilton.

The couple managed to change the tyre with help from the police and get back on the road.

“I think that sometimes the police don’t get enough appreciation and so we wanted to pay our thanks,” said Sandra.

Where are they now?

Sue Goss Marina Trajkovich Sue Goss has had a colourful life since leaving Ayr. The 1985 Queensland Surf Girl Quest entrant and Surf Life Saving Club member had visited the Gold Coast for the Queensland Surf Girl Quest competition before opting for a beachy change of scenery, moving there permanently a year later when she was 22.

A creative at heart, Sue talks about her many career changes and life after the Burdekin.

BLN: So, Sue, I hear that you were quite involved in the Ayr Surf Lifesaving Club back in the day. What was that like for you?

SG: I was. Actually, I think we were all involved, the whole family.

I did my Bronze Medallion before I entered in the Queensland Surf Girl Quest. Treena List from the club had approached me and asked if I wanted to become an entrant.

We did a lot of fundraising, there were a lot of families involved, and we’d have music and fashion parades down at the beach. Ayr’s Surf Club is still amazing.

BLN: What do you remember from being Ayr’s Surf Girl entrant?

SG: It was 1985 that I was the Surf Girl entrant, and I had my dress made in the colours of the flags. A friend of mine made my dress for me. I remember that year they rounded up all the past surf girls, and I think there were about twenty-two at the time.

I actually left Ayr in 1986 after going to the Gold Coast for the Surf Girl Quest. It was my first time there, and I suppose it really opened my eyes. I had had a group of friends go down there with me, and we all ended up moving together.

BLN: You’ve been through a few career changes throughout your life. Can you tell me a bit more about that?

SG: I worked in a dentist’s office when I was still in Ayr, and I’d just left school. I did that for four years; then I moved down south. I studied interior design, and I worked in that industry for four years, and now I’m a massage therapist.

BLN: Your family seems to have quite a creative background. Is that what inspired you to pursue interior design?

SG: I think so. I’ve always loved fashion; the design industry is all a part of that creative desire. I’m one of six kids, and I think we were all quite creative. I worked for an interior design company and then worked independently with my own clients off and on.

Mum was an entrant to be Miss Australia in 1957. I think that zest for dressing up and fashion kind of evaporated when she had children and was transferred into all of us.

BLN: How did you go from interiors to massage?

SG: I actually got divorced and just felt like I needed a big change. I felt this strong urge that I needed to help people, I don’t know why.

That’s how I got into massage, I had an epiphany at home one day.

Massage was a way to learn more about the human body and do something completely different.

Now I’ve been doing massage for seven years for Endota Spa. I love that I get to make other people feel good.

BLN: What are you up to when you’re not working?

SG: Obviously, I have to look after my own body to be able to help other people, so I do have a huge interest in health and wellbeing.

I guess I’ve always been a beach girl. Even being near the ocean now, I just love it. I still do a lot of swimming, and I love to paddleboard. I’m at Burleigh Heads now.

I still follow design to this day, and I think I always will. I also went on to have two beautiful sons.

Show’s return provides a bittersweet backdrop Ex-patron set for final hurrah with Burdekin Show

Daniel Shirkie THE Burdekin Show is set to return on June 23, with committed volunteers and committee members working around the clock to bring the agricultural extravaganza to the Ayr Showground.

One person who’ll be looking to get involved in the proceedings is lifelong supporter and ex-patron Beverley Rossiter.

Rossiter, who came to the Burdekin in the early 60s, from New Zealand, after marrying her husband Richard, was deeply disappointed to miss out on a 2020 show, especially after having devoted so much time to her floral entrants in previous years.

“It was a shame to miss out on a year,” Mrs Rossiter said.

“Now it’s back again and you just can’t help but think, ‘oh, good’. I was looking at the schedule and I saw some

things I’d like to do, it’s all pretty exciting.”

However, although the show has been a huge part of Mrs Rossiter’s life for the better part of half a century, this year’s return is also tinged with a hint of sadness.

“This will definitely be the last year I participate, I would say,” Mrs Rossiter said.

“It’s always been so lovely, it’s a bit of a last hurrah for me, it’s a shame to miss out on a year, it was a very big gap in our lives. You get all these volunteers who do so much of the work, who weren’t able to participate.”

Mrs Rossiter, who stood down as the patron of the event in recent years, still has her eyes on taking out a place in her chosen events, namely the floral arrangements.

“I grow orchids for it and I’ve always loved flowers and cooking, so I get to be a part of it through that,” Mrs Rossiter said.

“I’ve got some petunias and three red orchid arrangements, I’ve also got some other things, but it’s not as much as I’d usually have.”

While sad to step aside from competing after this year, Mrs Rossiter says the show is something that will always be a part of her life, ever since she first met her husband aboard a ship.

“I think it’s just something that’s bred into you, really, it’s a community thing, I remember when Dick proposed to me in New Zealand, he turned around and said, ‘well, actually I have to rush back home first to help run the show’,” Mrs Rossiter said.

LOCAL LANDCARE INVITES NEW MEMBERS Marina Trajkovich

THE Lower Burdekin Landcare Association is inviting new members to join the organisation, with a new plant up for grabs with membership and opportunities to help the community and environment.

The group will be hosting its first propagation workshop of the month this Saturday, June 5th, inviting community members to learn more about what Landcare is about and pick up some skills from their local green thumbs.

Vice President of the Lower Burdekin Landcare Association, Nathan Barrett, says that while the group is the perfect place to hone your horticulture skills, it also plays a significant role in protecting the local environment.

He talks about his love of the club from the Lower Burdekin Land Care Association nursery on International Road, surrounded by hundreds of seedlings and thriving native plants.

“A year into living in the Burdekin, I started doing gardening as a hobby, and

through that, I was introduced to Landcare,” says Nathan.

“When you join, you get a free tree, so I became a member and just kind of started coming from there.

“I just loved everybody’s attitudes. They all just cared about plants and gardening, and there are all different people from all walks of life,” he says.

He says that the group is about so much more than gardening and that the passionate volunteers are crucial in maintaining the Burdekin’s natural environment, with years of knowledge specific to the area.

“It’s basically about propagation and caring for native flora and fauna, plants, waterways, weed control.

There are some guys here who have decades and decades of experience and specifically for the Burdekin region,” says Nathan.

He says that by propagating native plant species and reintroducing them to the environment and waterways, Lower Burdekin Landcare can protect the natural balance

BURDEKIN CHRISTIAN COLLEGE CELEBRATES OPEN DAY AND UNDER 8S DAY Marina Trajkovich BURDEKIN Christian College has had a busy few weeks of events kicking off with the schools Open Day and a jungle-themed Under 8s day that saw students come to school in their finest and furriest.

Principal of Burdekin Christian College Debra Creed says that the open day was a huge success that saw all teachers get involved in showing off the school.

“We had over 300 visitors and it was so exciting that we could share what’s so special about our College with the community,” said Ms Creed.

“All our staff were involved, teachers, administration and aides, in creating the activities for the day in different ways, from the marketing to running the entertainment program, dressing up in

costume or organising fun ‘hands on’ activities that highlighted the diverse subject areas we offer,” she said.

The school showcased a petting zoo for the kids and a model train that drove around the school as well as different activities for each subject taught at the school.

“I particularly loved the creative activities in each of the Prep to 12 classrooms that had an educational purpose to them such as the prep bakery or the history timeline activity. Being BCC with our STEM focus it was also great to showcase our robotics and drone program too.

“The entertainment program with singing, dancing and instrumental numbers by our own students, gave the afternoon a real festive feel. The rides and animal farm were of course

incredibly popular with all ages,” said Ms Creed.

A week later, the Early Learning Centre was given a reason to celebrate too with their under 8s day, which focused on promoting creativity and connection to other students with a jungle theme.

“Under 8s day is a celebration of Early Childhood Education and really highlights the importance of play, creativity and imagination in our children’s lives,” said Ms Creed.

“After a year of COVID which has increased anxiety amongst our children and in some cases isolated them, it was more important than ever that our children played and connected with others.”

East Ayr crazy hair East Ayr State School raises money for cystic fibrosis awareness STUDENTS from East Ayr State School participated in Crazy Hair Day last week, raising money for Supporters of 65 Roses, the North Queensland based organisation supporting families affected by cystic fibrosis.

East Ayr State School asked students to come to school with their craziest and most colourful hairstyles last Thursday the 27th of May, with a gold coin donation. A parents morning tea was also held, with over $1500 raised in total for Supporters of 65 Roses.

Fossil frenzy Students go Jurassic with new dinosaur exhibit Daniel Shirkie STUDENTS from across the region will cast an eye back 66 Million Years to a time when dinosaurs roamed the Earth as part of an upcoming, student-created exhibit.

Students from Osborne State School, Clare State School, Millaroo State School and Jarvisfield State School will present the exhibit at the Burdekin Library in Ayr on Wednesday June 9.

The exhibit will feature student-built dioramas, an interactive fossil digging pit and a presentation by palaeontologist Michelle Johnston.

Osborne State School Principal Hayley Laidlow says her school’s senior classes have been learning all they

can about prehistoric wildlife in anticipation of their role in making the exhibit happen.

“They’re really excited, the unit started as a science unit looking at fossilisation and we made a great connection with Michelle Johnston, who’s the curator at Kronosaurus Korner in Richmond,” Mrs Laidlow said.

“She recently took the kids out on camp, we went to Richmond and did the dinosaur trail which was really cool, so as a culmination of that unit, what we’re doing is creating our own museum using all the knowledge that the kids have gathered.”

The children are still researching the animals they’ll be creating dioramas of, with students in the older

grades working together in teams to research, study and then recreate the animals.

But much like the idea from an exhibit sprung from a unit about air and space sciences, the proposal for the exhibit has also led to other opportunities for the students to explore potential career paths and other vocations.

“It also folds in very well with what we’ve been doing in English, we’ve been doing persuasive text there, so they’ve been creating posters and radio advertisements for their exhibit.

“We’ve been working with Sweet FM and ABC Radio and of course the Burdekin Local News, so it’s been really great, the project has grown exponentially from the original plan which is really

exciting for all of us.”

The prospect of friends and family viewing their dioramas and research on a public stage is also providing a boost to the student’s as well, with everyone involved committing hard to making the exhibit the best it can

possibly be.

“I think the beauty of this unit has been that for one, the kids love dinosaurs, I haven’t met a kid yet who doesn’t love dinosaurs, but also it’s become really purposeful and there’s a reason for the work, they’ve become so much

more engaged.

“Being able to say that this is their work and it’s going to go on display, members of the public are going to see it, they’re really thinking, ‘okay, this has to be the best possible work it can be’ which is really nice to see.”

AYR State High School have hosted their own version of the Rostrum Voice of Youth speech competition over two nights this week in lieu of the cancelled 2021 nationwide event.

The presentation night of their own competition, dubbed ‘Voices of the Future,’ saw years seven to twelve compete in a compelling speech-off, with both junior and senior students writing and giving their speeches per their chosen categories.

Ayr State High English teacher and competition coordinator Linda Attard says that the students gave compelling presentations beyond their years, attended

by Mayor Lyn Mclaughlin and principals from student’s past primary schools in the audience.

“We hosted our own Ayr High, Voices of the Future for students who wanted to showcase their public speaking skills and to give them the opportunity to compete,” said Ms Attard.

“I think it’s a great opportunity, especially for kids who shy away from speaking in public. It gives them a great opportunity to build confidence, get some practice and step outside their comfort zone,” she said.

Twenty-three competing students tackled challenging speech topics that were open to individual interpretation like ‘it’s about time,’ or ‘nothing left to lose,’ for the junior students and ‘beauty is in the eye of the beholder,’ and ‘a dangerous trend,’ for seniors.

“I picked out five different topics from the students and five from the seniors. We

leave them really open so kids can interpret them how they like, for example, ‘it’s about time.. we stopped polluting our environment,” said Ms Attard.

“One senior student did a speech on the TikTok app and the dangers that it exposes kids to as part of the ‘dangerous trend,’ topic, exploring that challenge.”

Ms Attard also hosted weekly after school speech writing classes for students interested in improving their delivery skills and writing structure.

“A lot of adults hate public speaking, and it’s something that will help them well and truly after they leave our school gates. It’s invaluable, I feel,” she said.

“We’re very proud of all our students.”

SINCE starting at the Ayr State High School tuck-shop this year, long time friends and colleagues Robyn Hathaway and June Bartlett have gone from strength to strength, turning the canteen into a thriving health hub for students.

The pair, who had previously worked together in the aged care sector, in the kitchen at Regis Home Hill had been seeking a change of scenery, signing up to run the school canteen at the beginning of the school year.

The ladies describe their career moves from the school canteen while preparing for the lunch rush, finishing off beautiful fruit platters, salads and a hot carbonara.

“I think we both just needed a change,” says June of leaving the aged care centre.

“Coming from the environment where we used to look after old people, now we’re on the other end of the scale and we’re looking after young people. They’re both very unique groups of people,” she says.

“We just love it. We’ve brought all our lovely home cooking with us and we make it all fresh at the school every day. We have seventeen years of cooking experience between us,” she says.

Robyn says that when the pair first came into their new positions, their aim was to focus on fresh home cooked

meals and creating some new menu items for the students.

She says that their healthy salads and wraps have been incredibly popular and that they’ve quickly developed a great relationship with everyone at the school.

“We do make them a huge variety and we do a lot of home-style options.

All schools already do have healthy eating guidelines but we really focus on reducing processed food,” says Robyn.

“We’re very proud of what we’ve done and we’re gonna just aim higher and higher.

We do get kids excited to find out what we are cooking each day and we always look after them,” she says.

“From the beginning, we felt that we were so welcomed, everyone was very supportive.”

Although it’s a busy job, the pair say they’ve loved every day of it, turning the canteen into a profitable endeavour for the school.

“We’ve picked up their sales. It is a very demanding job. We’ve built it up so much.

A lot of the staff will come in to help us. Sometimes the kids come in and help us clean up. We do get very very busy, our days fly by,” adds June.

When they’re not preparing for lunch, Robyn and June are busy creating fruit platters for the after school kids, helping with excursion catering or helping the hospitality students.

“This is one of the best workplaces we’ve ever worked in. We will go above and beyond for the kids,” says June.

James Kennedy awarded life member status at Ayr Surf Life Saving Presentation Night Marina Trajkovich WHEN Ayr based electrician James Kennedy began volunteering with the Ayr Surf Life Saving Club in 2001, he hadn’t anticipated the position becoming such a huge part of his life.

Twenty years and 118 achievement awards later, the President of the Life Saving Club joined the prestigious ranks of life members at the Ayr Surf Life Saving Club’s Annual Presentation Night on 21st May. James says that he was inspired to become a member of the club while his kids, aged five and seven at the time, were in nippers, gaining his bronze life-saving award and never looking back.

“My brother-in-law was involved, and it’s something I’d wanted to do for a long time back when I was younger,” says James, now 55.

He says that joining the

I can still remember going for that first swim in the surf. I felt like I was going to drown.

I did have to get to the pool, and I did a lot of training to make sure I was fit enough to try and get through.

“When I first hit the water, I hadn’t swum that kind of distance in years. But by the time I finished it, I kept up with everyone in that small group,” he says.

He’s come a long way since those early days of training and now boasts over a hundred qualifications, from Silver Medallions in beach management and advanced first aid to qualifications in inflatable rescue boat driving.

“I’ve been able to pull people out of bogs and vehicles if they’re bogged on the beach down at Alva. I did first aid for one guy who had a motorbike accident up the beach,” he says.

qualifications in emergency care, teaching things like advanced resuscitation and spinal management.

Overall, he’s mentored and overseen the up-skilling of members receiving new qualifications a total of 191 times.

“The amount of awards is pretty ridiculous. I’ve done a lot. I’ve been the Youth Development Officer, I’ve been the Chief Development Officer, and I teach everything from advanced resuscitation to first aid. I’ve been the President of the club for three years and would like to return to the Chief Trainer position,” he says.

“I like to make sure that our members are always upskilling. You don’t ever want them to be in a situation where they’re out of their depth.

“We always want to make sure that we have the right skills to look after the public

“It’s six weeks of training where you learn first aid, how to paddle a board, know your way around the surf and how to rescue people,” he says.

“We did look after him until the ambulance arrived and he was pretty messed up. They’re certainly life skills that come in handy.”

He’s a state recognised education facilitator, assisting younger members rising through the ranks and helping them achieve their own Bronze Medallions and

He says he’s proud of everything he’s been able to contribute to the club and the several skills he’s gained along the way.

Achieving life membership is a proud milestone.

“It’s very humbling. I think that’s the only word I can describe it.”

Marina Trajkovich LLOYD and Lisa Shepherd from the Home Hill Swimming Pool and Caravan Park have hosted their firstever Biggest Morning Tea, inviting locals to enjoy a bite to eat and a cuppa while raising money for the Cancer Council.

Lloyd Shepherd says that the pair were inspired to join the organisation’s fundraising efforts following the success of Deni Caspanello’s 12-hour relay swim for Leukaemia, held at the swimming pool to raise money for Leukaemia research.

“Following our 12 hour swim for Leukaemia day, we wanted to do something else in Winter and we know that there’s still a lot of issues out there affecting people,” says Lloyd.

“We’ve got a great location here, and the place to do it, and so we wanted to do it for the community. After the relay swim with Deni Caspanello, we just wanted to do more. The response has been fantastic,” he says.

Community members and businesses got involved with Lloyd and Lisa’s Biggest Morning Tea, one of the Cancer Council’s

primary fundraising events, by donating raffle prizes and bringing food, from scones and cakes to finger sandwiches.

“We’ve been working on this for two to three months.

Businesses here have supported us really well,” says Lloyd.

“We were hoping to raise at least $500, it’s not a lot but it will help other people survive cancer. It’s been a successful day so we’ll be getting behind it next year too.”

Marina Trajkovich SHIRLEY Gilmore, the founder of the Burdekin’s Breast Cancer Support Group has hosted her famous Biggest Morning Tea in Ayr, in support of one of the Cancer Council’s primary fundraisers.

Shirley, who was diagnosed with breast cancer herself in 1990, has been hosting the Morning Tea for 18 years, this week raising $3770 for the Queensland Cancer Council.

“The food has been made by the women in my support group but the general public as well, a lot of people have come on board.”

Back to the flapper age Sue Goss is lending her grandmother’s 1926 flapper gown for the upcoming Delta Yarns project dedicated to the Burdekin’s fashion history.

Marina Trajkovich EIGHTY-three-year-old Robin Bennett hadn’t thought about her mother’s sequined flapper dress in years when she pulled it out of her cupboard in Ayr, gently examining the delicate black tulle and hand beading.

Sylvia Paine had made the impeccably handmade dress in 1926, and seeing the dress takes Robin back to the age of Charleston dancing flappers, parties and decadence in a bygone era of the Burdekin.

“She obviously went to a lot of parties. Parties were very much a big thing back in those days,” says Robin, who rediscovered the dress when moving house years ago.

“I think the only place to go back then was probably the original Delta Hotel on Queen Street. But in those days, they would have parties on different properties,” she says.

Robin says that the glamorous and beaded, sheer party frock paints a very different picture to the woman she knew and remembers, who was busy raising her and her five siblings.

“The mum I knew had passed that era. I don’t even remember my parents ever going out. It was before I was born,” she says.

“She didn’t work after she was married, she took to the job of rearing children, and the party days were finished.

She just focused on bringing up the family,” says Robin.

Sylvia was a talented seamstress and crocheter who would make dresses and clothes for herself and the rest of the family, a task that became more difficult during WWII. “The only materials that were really available were a few blacks and navy blues.

It wasn’t until after the War that beautiful colours were available,” says Robin.

“I remember my mother soaking flour bags that were made out of calico, and she would make clothes and underwear out of the flour bags. Bloomers for the three girls.”

“When we used to come home for Christmas, she would unpick our school uniforms. She’d turn them inside out and create a new uniform because the navy blue would fade. There were six of us, and that must have been a huge task,” she says.

Robin says that rediscovering the passed down dress and, with it, beautifully crocheted baby clothes made by her mother when she was born was a gratifying experience, one that preserves the memory of her family.

“I just love it. It proved to me how clever she was because she was such a hardworking mother. When you go through the War and the depression, you certainly don’t have a social life,” says Robin.

She has now passed the dress on to her daughter, Sue Goss in the Gold Coast,

who has always had a strong appreciation of fashion.

The dress will be used in the upcoming photo shoot for Delta Yarns, a new project by ex-Burdekinites Christine Clark and Meg Carlsen, which examines the role of fashion in the Burdekin’s history and cultural memory.

The dress will be worn alongside other items and shot in various locations intrinsic to the region this July, part of a broader history project funded by the Regional Arts Development Fund.

Sue Goss says she looks forward to seeing her grandmother’s dress brought to life once more.

“I’ve had it tucked away in a safe spot thinking ‘wouldn’t this be great to showcase’. I was just blown away by the idea. I’m so excited that it’s getting a bit of recognition,” says Sue. “It’s a very fashionable place, the Burdekin. There are probably so many beautiful fashions just hidden away,” she says.

“My nana loved dancing.

She would have looked beautiful in the dress.”

High-tech fish monitoring to help protect against fishkills NQ Dry Tropics AN NQ Dry Tropics community event held at Lilliesmere Lagoon is hoping to highlight the danger posed by fishkills.

The Lagoon itself was the site of a mass fish kill in February 2019’s sweltering summer that affected a wide range of fish species including hundreds of barramundi.

The event, designed to inform the public about the ongoing efforts to prevent such incidents from occurring again, focused on monitoring and protecting the local waterways and wetlands.

The event was part of the Reducing Burdekin Sediment Project, funded by the Queensland Government’s Natural Resources Investment

Program.

Eddie Smallwood, Chairman of the Gudjuda Reference Group, highlighted the cultural and environmental significance of wetlands and waterways during his Welcome to Country.

Project partners and participants Burdekin Shire Council, Burdekin Shire Rivers Improvement Trust, JCU TropWATER, Burdekin Fish Restocking Association, and OzFish Unlimited all shared their perspective and information on what they’re doing to help ensure fishkills are limited in impact and frequency.

NQ Dry Tropics Wetlands Team Leader Scott Fry said work to improve the health of Lilliesmere Lagoon wouldn’t be possible without

the cooperation of these organisations and local farmers.

“Fish kills occur when extreme heat and windless days combine with catchment runoff to drastically reduce levels of oxygen in the water,” Mr Fry said.

“Activities such as removing aquatic weeds, revegetating creek banks with native trees to provide shade that cools water temperatures, and monitoring water quality all help to keep the waterway in good condition and reduce the likelihood of fish kills.

“The purpose of this event was to give the lower Burdekin community an opportunity to find out more about this work, and speak with scientists, community groups and industry representatives.”

Dr Nathan Waltham and Dr Adam Canning from James Cook University’s aquatic research arm TropWATER answered questions about monitoring work carried out in the creek using a speciallymade electrofishing boat.

The boat delivers an electrical pulse into the water, which temporarily stuns fish before they are netted, measured and released unharmed back into the creek.

Visitors also had a chance to see Burdekin Shire Council’s aquatic weed control boat and hear from Environmental and Health Services Manager Dan Mulcahy about efforts to tackle invasive species such as water hyacinth and paragrass.

Improvement Trust President Ryan Jones said stabilising creek banks helped to prevent excess sediment entering waterways and impacting habitat both locally and on the Great Barrier Reef lagoon.

Cr Michael Detenon, President of the Burdekin Fish Restocking Association, discussed how the group is contributing to increasing numbers of native fish species into local creeks, including the iconic barramundi.

OzFish Unlimited Project Officer Ellie Sales joined Scott Fry to demonstrate how fish traps are used to monitor the effectiveness of fishways — which enable native species such as mangrove jack to migrate between freshwater and marine habitats to breed.

They removed a trap located by a vertical slot

fishway constructed next to an automated water delivery gate on the lagoon, installed by project partner Lower Burdekin Water.

They found a number of species inside, including sleepy cod, empire gudgeon and fly-specked hardy head.

Kalamia Mill worker Kathy Higgs, who attended the event with husband Chris, said she was impressed to hear about the work taking place to improve fish habitat.

“The fish kill in 2019 opened my eyes — and those of many of my colleagues at the mill — to the importance of keeping the lagoon healthy,” Mrs Higgs said.

“It’s great to see all these groups working hard to prevent something like that happening again.”

Sugar • It was a slow start to the week for the ICE11 market before raw sugar prices improved on Friday off the back of the Brazilian government announcing a water emergency alert for five Brazilian states. The prompt July contract pushed as high as 17.69 USc/lb before closing the week at 17.36 USc/lb.

• After a slow first month of the Brazilian crop, UNICA data from the first half of May shows production has accelerated as we move into the body of the crop. The third report of the 2021 Season surprised the market to the upside, with all categories reporting higher-thanexpected results. As of 16 of May, cane harvested was 86,309 million tonnes and sugar 4,529 million tonnes.

• Ethanol parity continues to provide strong support for sugar prices, with spot parity sitting around 16.60 USc/ lb and expected to remain in an approximate 15-16 Us/c range in the next three months.

• A 217,000 lot net-long position was printed in the Commitment of Traders report dated 25 May. This is slightly lower by 16,000 lots week-on-week, indicating speculators are still closing out their position. On a live basis, the specs are likely to be in a higher net-long position after the rally on Friday night and a strong start to the current week. This position will be closely watched as we move towards expiry of the July contract.

Wilmar Sugar AN estimated 7.97 million tonnes of sugar cane is set to be crushed during the upcoming crush.

If that target is met, it would beat out last year’s total of 7.91 million tonnes of sugar cane that were processed in the region.

Last year’s total output in the Burdekin was dampened slightly by dry conditions, with Invicta Mill the last outpost in the Burdekin to crush out, finishing up on November 15.

Expected to start on Tuesday, June 8, the crush operations are not expected to be impeded by the closure of the Burdekin River Bridge on Monday, June 7, according

to Wilmar’s Burdekin Regional Operations Manager Paul Turnbull.

“The Department of Transport and Main Roads consulted us about the upcoming bridge closure and its potential impact on our start of crush operations,” Mr Turnbull told Burdekin Local News when asked about potential delays.

“We have advised our employees of the closure so they can plan around it.

“We do not envisage any major impacts on our people or our operations.

“Our four Burdekin mills are on track to start the 2021 crush on Tuesday, June 8.”

Cane trains are already on the move preparing for the upcoming crush, with Wilmar

sugar urging residents to be aware of the risks posed by them as locomotives cross the Burdekin region.

Burdekin Cane Supply Manager John Tait says the vehicles are already delivering bins for cane rail sidings throughout the region, and that residents should be aware as the crush gets underway.

“It’s really important that people approach level crossings with caution and look out for cane trains.

“We’ve had a few months without cane train activity and people naturally become complacent. With the crushing season now just days away, we’re urging residents and visitors to switch their train brains back

on,” John said.

Kylie Newman, Wilmar’s Community Relations Manager, was on hand to educate children about the dangers of cane trains and the railway tracks that criss-cross the region.

She spoke with the Ayr Community Kindergarten about the dangers present when being careless near cane trains.

“We really want our youngest community members to understand just how heavy cane trains are and how much time they take to stop,” Ms Newman said.

“A locomotive weighs about the same as a humpback whale and a cane bin is about the same weight as an elephant.”

$5 million spend boosts Inkerman mill ahead of crush Daniel Shirkie INKERMAN Mill has received a $5 million spend aimed at boosting it’s capabilities ahead of the start of the sugar crushing season.

A No. 6 Bagasse Conveyor was constructed at the Inkerman Mill facility in the middle of May, replacing an aging conveyor that was no longer usable by the team.

Designed entirely in-house at the Inkerman Mill, the commission for the conveyor belt was completed in May, with a modular construction method that allowed the construction crew to easily install the brand new conveyor belt within the mill itself.

Further upgrades to the mill’s facilities were also

completed in the lead up to the crushing season, with a $1.9m boiler automation project among the range of facility upgrades.

That came as part of a wider upgrade of Wilmar’s eight mills across the country, with the organisation working to ensure boiler stations across all their facilities operate reliably.

The work involved replacing an outdated control system with a more modern programmable logic controller.

The boiler electrical supply was also upgraded, with $1.2 million earmarked for that purpose under the array of upgraded technology.

The upgrades are expected to improve reliability of the power supply to the mill’s

Currency • Another stable week for currency saw the Australian dollar trade in a similar 77 - 78 cent range for yet another week, only briefing dipping out of this territory on Friday to a low of 76.77 cents.

• The AUD was lifted on Wednesday by New Zealand dollar strength when the Reserve Bank of New Zealand meeting was surprisingly hawkish (see our Jargon Buster) as they announced a series of forecasted rate hikes. The official cash rate in NZ remains the same as Australia, steady at 0.25%, however is now predicted to be raised in Q3 2022.

• Brent crude oil prices gained a respectable 3.1% week on week, up to $68.48/ barrel after Goldman Sachs estimated short term demand would be strong and reported a price target of USD80bn for the commodity.

Blushing Rouge Marina Trajkovich IT’S sexy, it’s sensory, and a little bit tongue in cheek, Highwire’s Rouge brings the best in circus performance and turns it on its head with an adults-only twist and bend of cabaret.

The theatrical circus production teeters into the realm of the risque and draws together elements of acrobatics, aerials and heart-stopping balancing acts accompanied by the operatic talents of Michaela Burger and some sultry burlesque.

It’s gained national recognition on the Australian Fringe Festival circuit, marrying an incredibly talented performance ensemble with a new interactive and fun-filled

show that’s guaranteed to excite and entertain.

Performer Paul Westbrook, says he’s looking forward to bringing the performance to the Burdekin and that audiences can expect a funfilled and entertaining night out of impressive circus-try and sultry performances.

“I have a bit of a clown character so a bit of comic relief between the impressive acrobatics. I used to train in olympic trampoline and I’ve also studied dance. I also do a lot of aerial strap work so I bring that theatricality into the show,” says Paul.

Classically trained in drama in London, Paul found himself branching into other avenue’s of performance, with his Rouge debut featuring elements of theatrics, dance

and aerial acrobatics.

“I’ve definitely enjoyed the more tongue in cheek and adult nature of it.

Especially coming from a background where I do a lot of Shakespeare it’s nice to have that gritty crudeness mixed with some high-level physicality,” says Paul.

He says that Rouge is a unique mix of challenging acrobatics and theatricality, but that the show also challenges stereotypes around gender and performance while exploring playful and sensual themes.

“Traditionally in circus, the girls are thrown around by big men but what we’ve tried to do is have girls as bases, the men more fluid to blur the lines and open people’s eyes to what’s possible.

“What I like about it is being able to show off that physical prowess which we do train hours and hours for, but we’re also able to show ourselves as people and performers as well and just have fun with the audience.”

“There’s the classic acts but there’s also elements of sideshow which is kind of like Victorian freak-show, sword swallowing, fire. Then you’ve got acrobatics like trapeze, base acrobatics where we throw each other around.

“I think that what sets us apart from other shows is that it does have that element of spectacle to it. It’s got live music, big numbers, solo numbers. It’s an incredible display of strength but mixed with some real down to earth entertainment.”

Thursday: Last Thursday saw a field of 32 players take to the fairways for a 4BBB Competition, which is always held on the last Thursday of the month. Local Juniors, Bryon Sutcliffe and Wendell Jennings, played some impressive team golf to take out first place with an excellent score of 30 points,. Trevor McGowan and Brad Patti finished second with 29 points. The Nearest the Pins were won by John Reid (8A), Jon Lena (9A), Doug Lena (9B), Mitch Keir (12A) and Jayson Dowie (18A). The popular D n S Quality Meat tray was won by Bob Clerke and the carton was won by John Lewis.

Saturday 29/5 we had a stableford event with our new sponsor Hillery Group with 63 players. Men’s winners were Zak Eriksen 43 points, Jayson Dowie 40 and Robert Webb 39.

Ladies winners were Win Threlfall 39 points, Wendy Baker 36 on a countback from Pat Lawson.

Wednesday was a great day to be out on Royal Ayr, weather was great and some of the ladies had good scores. Our C Grade winner smashed her division with a 72 nett. Well done Lorna Gray looks like you might have hit form again.

Our B Grade winner, also convincingly took out her division, with a sensational 68 nett - well done Joy Cornford who was also the over all winner for the day.

And last but certainly not least the ever consistent Pat Lawson took out the A Grade medal with a 73 nett, narrowly edging out Loretta Mauro who had 74 nett.

Captain Carmel was their to meet us at the 19th for presentations and this week invited our two winners Pat Lawson and Kerry Mann from Country Week, to join her on the couch to get a run down of the ‘week that was’ in Bribie Island. Word on the street is, next year Country Week is in Cairns, and Ayr ladies will have an even bigger number of participants in attendance.

Wednesday: This week was the Inaugural JT and BT day. Many thanks to Janet and Brenton Trezise for becoming a valued sponsor. Not only did they sponsor the winner and runner up in a stableford event, there were also some ‘fun’prizes on offer.

At registration we were told to count how many bunker shots we had for the round and we we all made it back to the club house, al those who were keen were involved in a left handed putting comp. It appears some of us are better with our left hand than our right when it comes to putting and after a ‘putt off’ the champ was Ingrid West. The bunker shot comp was a tie with both myself and Cecily Lena each having 4 shots in the bunker through 18. Now onto the ‘real comp. Well someone stop this woman... she is on fire... our winner this week was the ‘in form’ Kerry Mann who narrowly edged our the experienced Mavis Carvolth. The Club B grade Singles championship has been decided.

With the recent blood moon there was predictions of strange things happening but even the psychics could not predict this.

Leo Kenny defeated a plucky Damian Morello to take out the B singles Championship for 2021.

In other matches Rob Jorgensen and Ray Paneccasio put in a late flurry of match winning bowls to overcome the challenge from Norm Storrie and Joe Ypinazar.

Wayne Coonan and Alan Garioch fought out a thriller with Mick McCloskey and Len Feeney.

Coming into the last end, Len and Mick needed four to tie the match, and they delivered when it counted, to finish with a draw.

Not quite as good as Valentine Holmes but close. Henry Hazel and Jamie Woods started out their match like they had balance problems conceding nearly every end in the first half. They then found their groove to put the duo of Shaun Henderson and Richard Mau on notice, but in the end, they ran out of time, with Richie and Shaun taking out the match.

Doug Kiehne and Peter Jorgensen started their match strongly, putting on a show of precision bowls, then Trevor Elton and Gary Pearce began a fight back that proved to be not good enough

to stave off the defeat.

Next Sunday two A Pairs matches will be fought out. Match one Len Feeney and Nev Dickinson play Damian Morello and Steve Nellestein. Match two Peter Henderson and Jamie Woods play Rob Garner and Dave Brown. With this talent on show, one would expect the North Queensland selectors will be watching.

Normal social bowls will be on again on Friday night with names in by 6:00pm for a 6:30pm start, and on Sunday with names in by 1:00pm for a 1:30pm start.

A large field of players turned out to play for Carol Betteridge’s prizes. There were five men who came out for a game with the ladies. The winner of the ladies was Bev MacDonald with a score of 72 nett. The runner up was Val Smith on 77 nett. The pin shot was won by Jan Cannavan with Judy Elton taking out the chip shot.

For the men, Ray Collinson was the winner with 72 nett and Mac Jones was the pin shot winner.

Lloyd Shepherd had the least putts with 30 to take home the prize. The raffle winners were Judi Sheahan and Megan Barbagallo.

Sunday’s large field saw some good golf. A split sixes was played for the club pennants on the day. The individual winners were Nipper Forno with 39 points.

Murry Cannavan, Craig O’Keefe and Jeanette Camer all shot 38 points in the run down. The pin shots were won by Craig O’Keefe, A Grade, Carol Betteridge, B Grade with Val Smith and Jeanette Camer sharing C Grade after they both chipped in for a birdie. On 9/18 the winners were Simon Power, Geoff Todman and Mary Chatlield.

This Sunday the player will play a 4BBB for Scott and Judi Sheehan’s prize.

READY TO RUMBLE Boxers set to battle in Home Hill tournament Daniel Shirkie SOME of North Queensland’s best and brightest upcoming pugilists will get a chance to put on a show in front of a hometown crowd thanks to an upcoming Golden Gloves boxing tournament.

Part of the Sunstate Amateur League, the event is set to run across two evenings on the weekend of June 11 and 12 at the Home Hill Memorial Hall.

Scott McLean, one of the organisers and the head trainer of many of the local faces who compete out of the Rock Solid Boxing Club in the region, says it’s good to be back after a year where schedules were severely limited.

“It is really exciting, obviously last year because of COVID, there were no title fights, which was a bit of a letdown,” McLean said.

“The morale of a lot of the boxing clubs dropped off a bit, but this year, so far, so long as we don’t see any cases in Queensland, we should have quite a few southern clubs coming to compete from south Queensland.”

Previous events have drawn impressive crowds to the seat of the sugar cane industry and while the travel restrictions this year are expected to hamper numbers, McLean is still optimistic about just how many people will turn out to cheer on their favourite local fighters.

“We should be able to get most of the northern clubs along, so for a two-day event in Home Hill, it should be

really good,” McLean said.

“We’ll have all our normal sporting crowd that travels with the boxers around to all the tournaments and whatever else, but most of the guys want to come and see the locals we’ve got competing in the competition.”

While the sport has been hit hard by the restrictions on training, travelling and competing, the wait for regular competition to resume has only made McLean and his team all the more eager to test their talents against a wider field of opponents.

“There seems to have been a bit of a comeback with a lot of the senior competitors which is great to see. We’re hoping we’ll get a couple of the junior competitors up, because I have a few junior boxers on the card myself and we’re really keen to get them matched up with someone,” McLean said.

Amongst the many, and wide-ranging, amateur bouts that will be held across the two-day tournament, there’ll also be some bigger profiles visiting to help strengthen the sport, with a number of former Sunstate amateurs who have since gone pro returning to talk about their journey through the system.

“We’ve also got a few professional fighters coming down on the night that have come through the Sunstate program and they’ll get a chance to talk,” McLean said.

“They came through the Golden Gloves and the amateur titles and they now

reside down south competing professionally.

“They’ll be competing at an upcoming event in Townsville, so they’ll be talking to our guys about their journey, and most of the guys are North Queensland faces, so it’ll be good for the crowd as well.”

McLean is also hopeful the information, and the spectacle, will help inform

those who aren’t familiar with the sport about how much more is involved than just toughness and strength.

“It really is just as much a physical chess match as it is just having brute ability and force,” McLean said.

“There’s a lot of athleticism that people don’t really understand and fully appreciate the skills it takes to land clean shots.”

“There’ll be a lot of sportsmanship as well and that’s what we like to see, especially from my guys, I think it’ll be a bit different from the gladiator sport that people expect.”

Above all, McLean was excited to show off the region’s talent and begin the journey to larger competitions again.

“For us, this is something

that will show the sport off from the grassroots all the way through to that elite level,” McLean said.

“This is one of those stepping stones to state titles and, eventually, COVID pending, possibly national titles as well, so it’s a big opportunity.”

The lead in to the Burdekin Touch Football Association’s finals will be slightly altered this season

WHILE most of the region was thrilled to see State of Origin’s first game moved to Townsville, it has had at least one unfortunate sideeffect for one local sporting association.

The Burdekin Touch Football Association have had to push their schedule out of alignment, with the Senior Fixtures for Week 8 of

Touch Draw the competition cancelled in the wake of State of Origin moving to Townsville, and the bridge closures scheduled for Monday evening.

The association made the announcement on Facebook, noting that the under 14s competition scheduled for Wednesday June 9 will still go ahead, followed by the Finals.

PUSHOVER tries will become 60-metre runaway matchwinners, and missed tackles will become try-saving ankle biters when the Burdekin Roosters Old Boys meet for a reunion at Rugby Park this Saturday.

Just on seventy old players who were once household names in North Queensland have indicated to organiser Dave Flannagan they will be attending the afternoon when the Roosters and Hens take on Western Lions.

League fans once knew two brothers throughout the North for their Foley Shield exploits, especially with Mt Isa but those two hard men were Burdekin boys - the Daisy Brothers, Vern and Frank.

They were well known hard men with the Isa, and they will be joined by fellow Miners players Bill Bawden, Butch Christiansen, Ricky Gudge and John Grew.

They will meet up with other boys Bob Trindle and Paul Twibble, both living in the Burdekin, and possibly Les Henaway, a pastor in Ayr. John Grew played for the Isa before coaching Charters Towers and the Burdekin, and there was no harder a forward around.

Who will forget the run-ins between Grewy and his boss during the week, the great Owen Bourke?

Barry Crew was a good fullback with Hornets before going to Mackay, and he will enjoy meeting up with locals

Roosters A Grade coach Chris Perry said his team played good tough football last Saturday against Brothers with the score line of 28 – 10 no indication of the hardness of the game.

Brothers coach Roy Baira said it was the hardest game his team had for the season.

Brothers lead 16 – 6 at the break with under 19 promoted fullback Declan Dowson scoring a 50 metre try with swerve to level the game at 6 all with the Joel Mason conversion.

Dowson showed he can handle the top grade with ease and was a danger every time he injected himself into play.

Centre Ethan Hegarty brought the score to 16 – 10 and the Burdekin boys were looking like causing a major upset.

With 10 minutes to go a Roosters try was disallowed and that try would have evened the game up.

With a couple of penalties Brothers worked the game down field and scored two more tries against a tiring Roosters outfit.

Perry was happy with the way his boys tried hard against more fancied opposition.

“Daniel Beazley led the boys around well in the forwards with

Mitch Guy and Zac Heron but I was impressed with the efforts of Riley Granshaw and Tate Brombal,”the coach said.

Perry added that Tate and Riley never gave an inch and battled hard against bigger and faster opposites.

“I was impressed with my whole forward pack,”Perry added.

In other A Grade matches Western Lions got up on the bell to defeat Centrals 20 – 18 at the Sports Reserve while Herbert River were leading Norths 30 – 6 at half time at Peggy Banfield Park when there was a power failure and the game was abandoned. .....................................................

Reserves coach Ben Smith said his team just cannot finish off moves resulting in tries.

“I would say we were camped in their quarter more than they were in ours but we couldn’t finish things off,”the coach said.

Smith did see his team have a better second half when after being down 30 – 4 at the break only allowed in ten more points for the final 40 – 4 score line.

Peter Fotinos showed that when he injected himself into the line he can score a try as he did.

Smith said front row forward Lachlan Winter was outstanding

eighths playing for Burdekin and Mt Isa, and he has said he would be coming from Brisbane meeting up with his brother-in-law, the great Cracker Spero.

Home Hill ex-player and coach Henry Miller says he is in a wheelchair these days, but nothing will keep him away, so he has his son, another ex-Home Hillite, Michael coming from Townsville to make sure he gets there.

He will meet up with the well known Andy Pegoraro, who not only played for Brothers before leading Home Hill to the 1970 Grand Final over Colts coached by the great Barry Muir but later on became President of the Burdekin Rugby League and a North Queensland selector.

Andy’s sons John and Paul could also be there, as will

Froggy Piva and the Mann contingent from Home Hill Tex, David, Kevin and Chad, and Under 20s captain and halfback Charlie Barbagallo.

The Home Hill Smith brothers Alex and Ronny will meet up with their sons - Jared, now the Roosters Junior President and Ashley, now the Roosters Senior Vice President.

Ashley tells me Doug Stockdale is raring to go as with the Chappell brothers Doug and Rube. Doug a former North Queensland player.

Dave was quite excited to say that Barry Jensen, who played in the first State of Origin, Dennis Clancy, Mal Barnes and Geoff Bowmaker will be here.

Geoff was a referee in Moranbah for a long time, so maybe he and Normie Bohn

might discuss send-offs.

Chris Perry recruited two top-class backs to help win the 2001 Grand Final for the Roosters, and they will both be coming - Simon Leo and Jim Ah Mat. John Short was once a star forward for the Burdekin before playing A Grade for Brisbane Brothers in the days before the Broncos, and he is coming along with a former speedy centre in Clem Hovi.

One of the hardest centres ever to lace a boot on for the Burdekin was Paul Finlay, and he has said he will drive here from Mackay, where he now lives.

Brian Bevan was one of the best halfbacks in the North coaching Home Hill before playing for Parramatta and then coaching New Guinea.

He will be here meeting up with old mates, including

former front-rower Don Wallace.

Noel Goldthorpe kicked the winning 40-metre field goal for New South Wales to win the Super League Origin before playing for the Cowboys and then coaching the Burdekin for two years.

Goldie corresponds with Steve Olsen, and he has said he will come if he doesn’t have Australian Old Boys commitments where he still plays.

Many others have indicated they will be there at Rugby Park on Saturday for the drinks and nibblies starting at noon.

We’ll introduce the old players to the public, and there could be an interview or two.

Under 19 co coach Jason Williams said he was disappointed with the effort of his team who went down 50 nil.

Brothers are a bigger side and the locals appeared to stand off allowing them to run at will.

Williams said tackling, although there, was soft and the Brothers team were allowed to run at will.

He said Ethan Roberts never stopped trying but picked up an injury while Brady Vasta and Brendan Cotter did not deserve to be on the end of a loss.

The co coach added the front row rotation seemed to work even though Cotter picked up a knee injury.

“I thought Braden Cazzulino was possibly our best player,”said Williams.

In other Under 19 matches Centrals beat Western Lions 64 – 8 and Herbert River had their first win beating Norths 28 – 16.

The Hens team came home in a joyful mood after downing Brothers 22 – 16.

The game was hard and close

all the way with the locals leading 12 – 10 at the break.

Stephanie Monday showed her true form by scoring three tries in the first half, one a sixty metre effort.

Brothers never headed the Hens during the entire match with the Hens defending well.

Coach Frank Beer said Stephanie Monday was outstanding and she was unstoppable when she put her foot down.

Tamara White, Shakyra Carr, Paige Griggs, Indee Everett and Kaitlin Daley had good forward games.

Kaitlin scored a good try by turning in a tackle near the line.

In the backs Jo Morgan was dangerous with Ashlee Aguirre very safe at fullback.

In other Ladies matches Western Lions beat Centrals 40 – 4 and Herbert River were too good for Norths by 36 – 6.

The Roosters will now be home for the next three weeks first meeting Western Lions on Saturday in four grades in front of Old Boys Day. The Burdekin Roosters will have three home games in a row starting this Saturday at Rugby Park when they meet Western Lions in four grades.

The day will also coincide with an Old Boys reunion with old players coming from as far south as Sydney.

The Old Boys will start assembling at midday with the first match to start at 2.15 with the Hens playing the undefeated Western Lions.

The Lions are full of Queensland Cup players but the young Hens are capable of causing the upset.

Coach Frank Beer said that Townsville representative Shania Capper will return from injury at fullback while half Akeilah Williams will also be back from junior coaching.

The coach said that front rower Jess Clift will be given till next week with her injured knee.

With winger Loila Savage injuring a knee last week in the win over Brothers, Jo Morgan could go back to the wing with Ashlee Agguirre coming into centre joining Teah Lee Monday who makes way for Akeilah at half.

The coach said Stephanie Monday scored three tries last week so she will be closely watched but he believes he has the players to do the job if they control the ball in attack and defend well The Hens are second with Western Lions on top.

The fourth placed under 19 Roosters will meet seventh placed Lions at 3.30.

Roosters coaches Will Jack and Jason Williams will be waiting on the fitness of a couple of players here before selecting their team.

Western Lions are sitting fourth in reserve grade and they will meet

the fifth placed Roosters at 5 pm.

Coach Ben Smith will have extra players to call upon this week with his Miners back in town and he should put out a good side.

Forwards Lachlan Winston and Riley McCloskey had time in A Grade last week and went well and could be called on again by Chris Perry.

Smith would like to see his team finish off promising moves and defend as they did second half with Brothers.

The A Grade will start at 6,30 with the sixth placed Roosters taking on the third placed Lions.

The Lions scored in the dying stages last week to defeat Centrals while the Roosters put up a gallant display against Brothers.

Riley Granshaw and Tate Brombal showed they are up to it last week as did Winston and McCloskey and they will join Daniel Beazley, Zac Heron and Mitchell Guy up front although Guy could be in doubt.

Riley Horan, Jared Giardina and Jared Thorley could return in the backs.

Last week Perry used under 19 player Declan Dowson at fullback and he was players player so he could be used there again.

Plenty of Football to keep the enthusiasts entertained over the last week. Local teams played 10 games across all divisions. The A league had plenty of catch-up games to get through and the finals in the Championship play off, Europa and Champions League kept the overseas fans satisfied over the weekend.

Last Tuesday night the Kalamia Hotel Premier League and Burdekin Tyre Service Reserve Grade men’s teams played Saints Eagles Souths in their postponed games in Townsville.

The Burdekin Tyre Service Reserve Grade men started well with Castiglione converting from the penalty spot in the 15th minute to give the Panthers a 1-0 lead at half time. Saints Eagles Souths equalised in the 63rd minute also from a penalty kick. This sparked the Panthers into action as they put the home team to the sword with 4 goals in the last 15 minutes. Mio started the scoring in the 75th minute. This was followed by Lambie-Fabbro in the 81st minute, Rogers in the 84th minute and Saunders finishing off with the fifth goal in the 89th minute. The Burdekin Tyre Service Reserve Grade men’s team ran out winners 5-1.

League men’s team started confidently but stumbled to go in at half time down 4-1. Pedro scored just before half time to give the Panthers some hope for the second half. The soul searching at half time led to a change in tactics which resulted in a very good second half performance. DalSanto pulled one back from the penalty spot in the 51st minute after Leckenby was brought down inside the box. SES went further ahead 5-2 in the 62nd minute.

The Burdekin continued to press forward and were rewarded with goals to Leckenby in the 77th minute and Lambie-Fabbro in the 88th minute to make the score line 5-4 at the final whistle.

On Friday night 3 Burdekin teams were in action to start a difficult round against Mundingburra Aitkenvale Olympic and Brothers.

At home the CA Contracting Reserve Grade Ladies got the weekend underway playing second placed MAO. The locals conceded in the 36th minute and went in 1-0 at half time. MAO increased their lead to 2-0 just after the break. This was the final score and the CA Contracting Reserve Ladies ended the evening in 3rd place on the ladder. has no players in the QLD with Hunt not being considered. With the Broncos holding a 23 – 18 winning record over the Dragons I really can’t see anything except a WIN for the BRONCOS especially if both team reproduce the form from last weekend with the dragons being so pathetic and the Broncos playing to the standard we expected

West Tigers V’s PANTHERS Both teams on song on the weekend on the weekend with Wests Tiger convincing win over the Dragons and the only undefeated team after 12 rounds looked a little rocky for the first 40mins but really kicked it up a gear in the 2nd half running out sounding winners over the hapless Dogs 30 – 4. This will be the biggest test for the Panthers even with 12 wins from 12 starts this week they could come back to the field with 7 players in the State of Origin teams. Wests Tigers normally win at Leichwent down 3-0 to 3rd placed MAO. An early goal in the 5th minute and another just before half time saw the locals down 2-0 at half time.

The Burdekin Tyre Service Reserve Grade team played 3rd placed Mundingburra Aitkenvale Olympic in Townsville on Saturday night. The Burdekin conceded in the 13th minute to go into half time a goal down. MAO scored soon after the break and went ahead 2-0. Casper Licciardello pulled one back for the Panthers in the 66th minute to make the score 2-1. MAO went further ahead due to an own goal in the 70th minute and sealed their win with another goal in the 76th minute to run out winners 4-1. This Saturday they play Ross River at home at 5:00pm.

League men were the final team in action for the weekend. They too played their second game in 5 days also against Mundingburra Aitkenvale Olympic. Things didn’t start well for the Burdekin when MAO scored two goals in the first 10 minutes. They increased their lead to 3-0 with another goal in the 28th minute. Mark Grasso pulled one back for the locals to see them head into half time behind 3-1. Just after half time Grasso scored his second goal in the 59th minute to make the score line 3-2. MAO and Burdekin had a player sent off with 15 minutes to go. MAO responded by scoring soon after and further increasing their lead in the 85th minute to run out winners 5-2.

This Saturday night the Premier League Men take on Estates at home at 7:00pm.

Early Sunday morning Brentford won their play-off final against Swansea, 2-0, to take their place in next season’s English Premier League. Brentford dominated the game scoring both goals in the first half. The had the game sewn up early as Swansea had a player sent off with 20 minutes to go. This was Brentford’s 10th try at qualifying via the play off and finally they’ve made it. They pick up £170 million for the win and a spot in next season’s EPL. After 2 really poor performances over the last 2 weeks this is a 50/50 toss of a coin. No way you could put your hard earned on an Eels team in this form. I think the Knights were and aberration and it was the Sea Eagles come down off the last 5 week high they have been on. As I said this is the toughest game of the week to pick! Will the Knights reproduce last week’s performance or will the Eels finally wake up after their 2 week slumber? My guess (toss of the coin)and the fact the Eels have only lost 2 players to State of Origin and the fact 2 really key players are back in with Dylan Brown & Regan Campbell-Gillard back I think PARRAMATTA will WIN it won’t be easy but after the last 2 weeks and with a few of their guns missing State of Origin Selection I feel they with really perform this week.

Horn brings anti-bullying mission to the Burdekin Jeff with AMAYDA Mentors during a recent regional visit

FORMER World Champion boxer Jeff Horn is set to bring his anti-bullying program to the Burdekin.

Horn and his initiative, the Australian Martial Arts Youth Development Alliance (AMAYDA) will set up at the Burdekin PCYC on Friday, June 4 thanks to the support of a number of local businesses.

Belinda Johnson, one of the organisers who helped bring the world famous boxer to the region, says she hopes that the lessons Horn has to share will stick with the children of Ayr and the surrounding towns.

“I came across the program, and I really liked the message and what Jeff was trying to tell people,” Mrs

Johnson said.

“Being a local and having been born here, I know there are some problems.”

“There was a conversation between Dave Cox and I, and I’d previously met Jeff, and I thought that it would be a really good idea for the Burdekin to get involved with it.”

Mr Cox organised a group of business owners interested in supporting the cause and the team soon put together a plan to support the program locally.

“Dave said, ‘leave it with me, I’ll talk to people from the Burdekin’ and he went out and got eight businesses on board and came back and said that they’d do it,” Mrs Johnson said.

“We had a roundtable chat and everyone was really

supportive of bringing the program here and making sure our community and our kids are the best they can be.

“Looking around that table at all the other backers, I could see they were people who really cared about this town, and their kids, and making sure that none of the children here have to suffer.”

When the program begins to run in the Burdekin following Horn’s visit, the group aims to have it open to a strong contingent of the region’s children.

“What we want to do as the people bringing it to the Burdekin, is open it up to 100 spots, first in best dressed, and they’ll get to do the program which will run once a week at the PCYC,” Mrs Johnson said.

That program, once it’s off

the ground and running, will help educate children about the dangers of bullying, how to respond and decisions to make early on in life.

“Jeff was bullied as a kid and that’s how he got into boxing, and I think the message behind it as well as the coping mechanisms is really important,” Mrs Johnson said.

“It teaches kids how to cope with bullying, how to prevent it and how to not get involved in it yourself.

“It teaches them what to do if it happens, how they can talk about it and report it and everything else they need to know.”
