THE Ayr branch of Suncorp will shut its doors in June, prompting concern from the community.

In a statement released to Suncorp customers in the region that has been shared with the Burdekin Local News, a date of Friday, June 4 was given as the final day of operations.

ith the Passion of Easter, everything about the man, Jesus of Nazareth as He is known, seemed to have ended. This compassionate, inspiring good man, good teacher and prophet, was capable of outstanding things and gave hope to a lot of people. He was a friend to everyone irrespective of social standing and background. He did nothing wrong, but He had enemies who wanted Him eliminated. His horrific death was compounded when everyone deserted Him. In the end, His whole mission seemed a tragic failure. In the Bible, we read that at Jesus’ death, darkness spread everywhere.

What was a real failure and end from an earthly perspective became a new beginning in God’s hands, that is not just confined to Palestine, but to the whole world: a beginning that defies all boundaries and powers. The resurrection brought hope to everyone, a hope where there is seemingly no hope. God can bring a new beginning of immense possibilities, a new direction to a road we thought was a dead end.

Holy Week reminds us that sufferings and setbacks are still there, but above everything, God can prevail.

There is every reason to hope when we trust in Jesus.

I

t occurs to me that a year ago, as we approached Easter, we were in lockdown for the first time.

Trying to come to grips with the impact of COVID on our lives. Even now, my intent to wish you a happy Easter seems conditional on whether you will be free to celebrate it as you choose to.

I’ve been thinking about the conditional world we live in. Will you have a good day at work? It depends on the attitude of the boss, the customers, co-workers, if the computer crashes, and you. Will your relationship last? It depends if your partner is loving, forgiving, if you are “compatible”, and you.

Will Easter be good? It depends; will we still be in some sort of lockdown? Will I be able to spend time with family? So much of what we have and what we do is contingent on the conditions we find ourselves in and the decisions we have made.

The truly amazing thing about the first Easter, the death and resurrection of Jesus, is a recurring theme of unconditional love. The last thing Jesus did before He went to be betrayed to his death was to look down the barrel of history and pray for you (John 17:20). Unbelievably, with the knowledge of his own impending torture and death moments away, His prayer was for us to know and share in the absolute unity and peace of the same relationship that He himself shared with the Father. Even whilst on the cross, He took time to pray for and forgive those who crucified Him, those who abandoned Him, the

criminal crucified beside Him, and even arrange care for his mother who was losing her eldest son. Then upon His return to personally love and restore those who had stumbled and struggled like “doubting Thomas” (John 20:24) and Peter (John 21:15). One thing I am sure of is that nothing - no restriction, no condition, no failure - is big enough to separate us from the love of God. We all have an opportunity to accept it. That is the message of Easter.

n behalf of the Burdekin Community Church, we extend a happy Easter to everyone in our community. This weekend we remember and celebrate the death, burial and resurrection of our saviour Jesus Christ. As we stop and pause, we give thanks to God for his great love shown through the sacrifice of his son. Whilst we deserve punishment and death for our sins, God didn’t give us what we deserve but rather showed us his mercy by putting his son on a cross. He dealt with the problem that we unable to solve and paid the price himself.

In the midst of the current season we find ourselves in, one where life seems full of uncertainty and fear for what the future holds, we can take great comfort in the knowledge that there is hope in Jesus. It’s been said that “peace comes not from the absence of trouble, but from the presence of God.” Our hope this Easter is that everyone will find peace and hope in their current circumstances because of the cross and the resurrection. God’s plan has always been that none should perish without receiving the gift of Salvation, which comes only through faith in what Jesus has done. Stay safe and have a wonderful time with your family and friends this Easter.

FIERCE FASHIONS ON DISPLAY AT RAGS TO RUNWAY WASP CAUSES PARK ROAD CRASH Marina Trajkovich

A Townsville man in his 60s found himself in strife last week after a wasp flew into his car, causing him to drive into the creek at Plantation Park.

Emergency services were called to the scene, helping the man from the half-submerged vehicle and into an ambulance, a representative of the Queensland Fire

and Emergency Services confirmed.

The man, who had been travelling with his caravan was taken to Ayr hospital in a stable condition, also suffering a pre-existing medical issue.

Firefighters from the Ayr Fire Station assisted Queensland Police Service, stabilising the sinking vehicle before a tow truck came to retrieve it.

Fatal traffic crash at Inkerman A woman has died following a serious traffic crash between a truck and a car in Inkerman last night.

At about 8.20pm, a b-double truck and a car collided on the Bruce Highway near Fredericksfield Road.

The driver of the car and sole occupant, a 51-year-old Bowen woman, was declared deceased at the scene.

The truck driver, a 67-yearold Kilcoy man did not receive any injuries.

The Bruce Highway was closed in both directions and reopened just before 4am (March 31).

Police are appealing for anyone who may have witnessed the crash to contact police.

The Forensic Crash Unit continues to investigate.

Mower accident in Clare A man has lost multiple fingers and suffered a significant injury to his hand after it was caught in a lawnmower Tuesday afternoon. A spokeswoman from the Queensland Ambulance Service confirmed that paramedics attended the man’s residence in Clare, transporting him to Ayr Hospital. The man is in a stable condition and is receiving medical attention.

Marina Trajkovich LOCAL and guest judges were blown away by the calibre of clothing on display at the Burdekin Artisan Community Association’s annual fundraising event, Rags to Runway.

The runway show, held at the Burdekin Netball Association grounds, invited entrants to design and create upcycled pieces under strict budget constraints and categories to create truly unique pieces.

President of the Artisan community, Sandi Milani, was blown away by the exceptional quality of fashion shown on the night and proud of all entrants who participated.

“It was even better than we expected. The entrants were

“The judges came from Townsville, Sue Tilley from the Drill Hall Studio and Giaan Chow, who is one of the artists there. They were so impressed with what they did with the outfits,” she said.

Among standouts were the designs of Piper Grogan, who won a new sewing machine for her efforts in the junior section, which she modelled herself, and Michelle Howard’s 1930’s inspired gown which won the open section.

“Michelle had started with two negligee sets and turned it into a 1930s evening gown that was absolutely beautiful,” said Sandi.

An effort to raise funds for Prostate Cancer research has accrued over $3,000 thanks to the generosity and hard work of the local community.

Michael L’Hullier contributed $1152 to the effort by recycling over 11,000 bottles and cans to raise funds for the donation, before hosting a fundraising luncheon at the Coutts Commercial Hotel. That luncheon raised $2,120 in order to bring the total raised to $3,272. Mr L’Hullier said he was overjoyed at how much the fundraising effort had been able to generate.

Act of kindness honours family member’s memory Daniel Shirkie A BURDEKIN stalwart feels ‘overwhelmed’ after an outpouring of community support, and the Department of Transport and Main Roads’ generosity helped keep the memory of her departed brother alive.

Loretta Fabbro, a former Burdekin resident who now resides in Townsville, travels out to the memorial to her brother Adrian to maintain the stone that sits at the sight of his unfortunate death to this day.

However, she wasn’t expecting a phone call from the Department of Transport and Main Roads regarding the memento so many years on.

“It’s incredible they could even track me down; I’ve been a Fabbro since 1997, so the name would have been completely different,” Ms Fabbro said. “They were asking if I was related to Adrian Minuzzo, and they wanted to know what I wanted to do with the memorial while the roadworks were going on.”

“They asked if I’d like them to move it and store it until they were finished with their work.”

While the memorial stone proved too challenging to be removed, Ms Fabbro was left touched by the gesture and was glad to see the care taken by workers.

“They put up all this orange bunting and little flags to protect it while they’re working; it was pretty remarkable, they had the digger right up near it, but they really went out of their way,” Ms Fabbro said.

One of the most surprising aspects of the unexpected outreach from Main Roads for Ms Fabbro is how many people reached out to contact her with concerns about the memorial.

“It was surprising, the number of people that commented to me that the roadworks were going on. They were all watching what was happening and what was being done,” Ms Fabbro said.

“They were all keeping an eye on it. People really do wonders.”

Adrian, who was only eighteen when he was killed in a car crash, is never far from his sister Loretta’s thoughts.

“You always feel for the family whenever you see someone else has lost their lives; I knew the family that lost their son the other day,” Ms Fabbro said.

“People haven’t forgotten Adrian; you think you’re the only one who remembers that accident, that morning, all that loss and the pain, but so many people say to me that they go past and they have a look.”

Ms Fabbro, who said she was ‘extremely grateful’ to Main Roads for the care shown by their workers, said she sent the organisation a thank you card after they reached out. “It just makes you feel like they really care; it overwhelmed me, to be honest,” Ms Fabbro said.

“You don’t feel as alone after something like that.”

Transport and Main Roads Minister Mark Bailey said he was pleased whenever staff could track down the memorial owners and ensure it wasn’t affected by roadworks.

“We understand that memorials can bring a great deal of Joyce Murphy, Josie Artiach and Betty Hook have made hundreds of toys.

JOYCE Murphy has been making toys for sick children in the Burdekin for over 60 years, her knitted creations delighting hundreds of families through her donations to the Ayr and Home Hill hospitals.

Joyce started making toys when she was just nine years old after her grandmother taught her the craft, sparking a new passion and lifelong hobby.

Living across the road from

the hospital in Home Hill, young Joyce would collect the toys she had made and deliver them to the medical facility, where she became a familiar face to the nurses and hospital staff.

“I’ve been making them all my life,” says Joyce.

“I love making pretty much anything. Anytime there’s anyone I know if someone is having children, I will always make them one of the toys.

All of my neighbours’ kids would get them, all these people who were so kind to

comfort to families affected by road tragedies and assist in the grieving process,” Mr Bailey said.

“While we do have a process for registering a roadside memorial, including contact details for family members, sometimes this process is missed. In that case, we do our best to track down loved ones if we are doing work in the area.

“If at all possible, and with the support of the family, we protect and reinstate memorials in a safe location away from the roadway where family and friends can continue grieving their loved one.”

Joyce’s resolve to make the toys was strengthened when her husband went through cancer, spending time in the hospital and seeing first hand the incredible impact the toys had on the children, lighting up when they would see them.

“When he had cancer fourteen years ago, he started to see little children upset.

He said, ‘you have to keep making these toys,’” says Joyce.

“He made me promise to him in front of all the nurses in the hospital that I was going to keep making them.

It meant so much to him, knowing that I was going to continue to do this.”

Now, Joyce is joined

by Betty Hook and Josie Artiach in her toy making endeavours.

The trio sit in Joyce’s lounge room at her home in Brandon, surrounded by knitting paraphernalia and wool stacked into shelves, a collection of the toys sitting on the coffee table.

Together, they have made hundreds of toys, donating them to hospitals and

medical centres in town or raising money for charities.

One project they volunteered for involved selling knitted dogs, toys that raised money for Beverley Ruth in Home Hill to buy and train a service dog to assist with her deafness.

“I’ve done over 60 years of charity work, it’s so important for me,” says Joyce.

Betty, who is known for the detailed woolen dogs, says that she got into making the toys after her husband passed away, meeting Joyce through a recommendation from the Home Hill Friends and Neighbours Craft Group.

“It was just something to do, and I found that I enjoyed it so much. I also wanted to help the children,” says Betty.

“You do get a lot of pleasure from sewing them up.

“Members of the craft club in Home Hill like to bring me wool so that I can make them,” she says.

Josey has also been helping make the toys since 2012, her favourites being the woollen aeroplanes and dinosaur toys.

“I don’t know how many I’ve made so far, an endless amount!” says Josie.

Parker Street upgrades to progress after Easter WORK on the Parker street drainage duplication upgrade and roundabout will progress on Tuesday, April 6, according to Burdekin Shire Council.

Parking bays and the through traffic lane on Parker street in front of the East End Centre will both be closed for the duration of the roadworks.

However, the East End Centre will remain open and accessible to the public via Graham street and from the Soper street end of Queen street.

The drainage works are nearing completion, and the rebuild of the Queen and Parker street roundabout is

Giru QCWA chapter honours nearcentury of service

Long-lived resident celebrates 103 years of life Daniel Shirkie AT least one significant milestone will be marked and celebrated on April 1st this year in the Burdekin.

Jean Neep will celebrate her 103rd birthday alongside family, with her son and close companion Alan helping to usher another year in the Burdekin for the long-lived stalwart.

Jean, who’s lived in the Burdekin since an astonishing 1935, will celebrate another year in the region after settling here with her husband a whole 86 years ago.

With multiple generations of the Neep family living in the region, such as her grandchildren in Giru, this year’s occasion has all the makings of a wonderful family event.

But the secret to such a long and full life is still elusive for Jean and son Alan, who cares for her in their home in Ayr. “She used to say all the time that it was just good genes, and I’ve been wondering for a while about that because the

spend her life in the Burdekin with her husband but has remained a part of the town since moving from Sugar Hill.

Alan and his sister Marilyn both have fond memories of their parents’ lives together.

“I’VE HAD A HEALTHY LIFE; IT’S PRETTY INCREDIBLE THAT I’LL BE 103 ON APRIL 1ST.” JEAN NEEP only good genes I’ve got are the ones I’m wearing,” Alan joked.

“But she’s doing really well, she still gets visits every so often from the family, once a week her granddaughter Sarah will come to visit her from Giru and she loves that.”

Jean was sadly widowed in 1984 after relocating to Ayr to

around the Burdekin, where the family shared their early lives.

She was born on April 1st, 1918, marking her early years in Ingham and Stone River on a small cane farm with her husband.

They lived at Parker Street before moving to a property near the United gas station

and then returning to Ayr with their growing family.

Jean herself couldn’t help but laugh at the fortune she’s enjoyed and the auspicious timing of her birthday.

“I’ve had a healthy life; it’s pretty incredible that I’ll be 103 on April 1st,” Jean laughed.

“It’s April fools, even.”

A lifetime spent in friendship clubs and communities fostered a talent and passion for singing, sadly sidelined by the COVID-19 outbreak in recent times, but Jean has remained upbeat.

“Everyone always asks about how she’s doing, and she’s been well, which is great,” Alan said.

Jean has three children, eight grandchildren and an astounding twenty-two greatgrandchildren at current count.

History Board provides a glimpse of QCWA’s past Daniel Shirkie THE Giru branch of the Queensland Country Women’s Association has been afforded the opportunity to commemorate their shared history on the eve of a major milestone.

The chapter will celebrate its 100th year in 2022, but all the focus was on their new history board unveiling on the weekend.

Chapter member Lezah Scarabel said the morning tea, which invited the community and local businesspeople to celebrate the occasion, was ‘beautiful’.

“It’s lovely to have everyone there from the community, and the board is coming at the perfect time,” Mrs Scarabel said.

Unfortunately, current QCWA Giru president Rosa Fru was unable to be in attendance, so past president Marlene Parison led the event.

“It was an idea we had to preserve some of the

“The kids just battled on through it,” says Mike.

“During the cyclone itself, the wind on the roofing iron sounded like there were trains going across the roof. It’s just this tremendous thundering roar of the wind.”

He describes going outside during the eye of the storm; the sunshine and quiet contrasted with the chaos still visible down the street.

CWA histories; we got some funding through RADF and had the board prepared by a signwriter in Ayr,” Mrs Parison said.

The chapter’s impressive history had to be condensed somewhat due to the format, but arrangements were made for other details also to be put on display.

“We actually had to condense the history a bit, but we do have copies of the entire original history; the complete history is all framed up on the wall in another spot, which is wonderful,” Mrs Parison said.

Mayor Lyn McLaughlin and Councillor Sue Perry were in attendance, and both were joined in speaking by Burdekin MP Dale Last.

“It was a lovely morning tea afterwards; the great thing is the Queensland CWA are putting out a magazine, and they’ll put the history in there for us for people to read when the anniversary comes up,” Mrs Parison said.

32 years after the devastating cyclone tore through North Queensland, one local reflects on those days in the storm.

MIKE Coleman remembers the eerie stillness, when in April 1989, the eye of cyclone Aivu passed over his home in Alva Beach, the rising ocean still surrounding his home.

“It was probably one of the longest enduring cyclone’s I’ve ever been in. Over the years, I’ve been in quite a few, but this one was just coming all day,” says Mike.

“You couldn’t think about what was going to happen; you just had to try and keep safe. At one point, a huge concrete mould flew towards the house and busted our window. The tidal surge came all the way through the house.

The ocean was through the back door,” he says.

Cyclone Aivu caused mass devastation across the Burdekin, as the category three cyclone tore through the region, destroying homes, uplifting roofs and causing floods that caused 90 million dollars worth of damage at the time.

“It went from really intense to just dropping off to nothing. All the while, you can hear the roar, this intense roar even though there’s nothing where you are.

“The eye of the storm was over the house for two to three hours. It felt like a nice day, with blue skies and sunshine. Then you look down the road, and you can just see everything being torn apart. It was horrendous,” he says.

Mike remembers the community feeling in

those still hours, helping neighbours collect some of their things and urging newcomers to the area that the chaos wasn’t over.

“During the eye, we went around everywhere, helping people shift their stuff and get everything organised.

“And when it came again, and the eye had gone past, the wind went from 0 to 200kms in a minute.

“At the height of the storm, we had huge gum trees out the back that were just snapped like carrots, in the first 2 minutes of the wind coming back,” says Mike.

“There were trees stacked up against our place three metres high; there was stuff everywhere.”

When the immediate madness subsided, Aivu left the community reeling, with the power out for days and buildings destroyed.

“You just have to get through these things,” says Mike.

Bravery awards given after horrific Home Hill stabbing Marina Trajkovich FIVE years after the horrific stabbing at Home Hill Backpackers that took the lives of two young people, Thomas Jackson has been posthumously honoured with a Star of Courage for his bravery on the evening of August 23, 2016.

It was a tragic and violent attack that shook North Queensland, as French National Smail Ayad held a knife to 21-year-old British Backpacker, Mia AyliffeChung’s throat, before carrying out the brutal killing.

Fellow Briton and hostel resident, 30-year-old Thomas Jackson had rushed to her aid, receiving several stab wounds in the process which left him hospitalised and fighting for his life before his untimely death.

Ms Ayliffe-Chung was

declared deceased on the scene with a stab wound to the heart.

Another man who has been irreversibly impacted by the events of the evening is Bowen resident Grant Scholz, who was a manager at the Backpackers at the time.

Mr Scholz, after hearing the altercation, which occurred on the balcony of the hostel, had rushed to the aid of young Mia, immediately lunging at her attacker and suffering a significant knife wound to the leg.

It is for these actions that Mr Scholz has also been recognised with a Commendation for Brave Conduct from the office of the Australian Governor-General this week.

A coroner from the incident in 2016, Nerida Wilson, described the scene at the hostel as “one of chaos,

confusion and fear.”

Following investigations, she reported that the perpetrator, Ayad, had displayed signs of paranoia prior to his attack on Mia and that he had developed an infatuation with her in the week leading up to the brutal altercation.

The residents of the hostel had been carrying out their 88 days of farm work to extend their Working Holiday Visas at the time.

“Ayad launched into a frenzied attack, using the knife against Mia’s upper body as she tried to protect herself on the ground,” Ms Wilson said.

After Mr Scholz had rushed to help, knocking Ayad to the ground, the attacker had reportedly jumped off the balcony, giving the injured hostel manager a chance to run for help.

“He was hurting her, so I had to do something … I just charged at him.”

“I think if I hadn’t pushed him over, he could have stabbed me in the chest or somewhere else,” Mr Scholz told the ABC.

His Commendation of Brave Conduct has been met with mixed feelings.

“It’s good to be recognised, but you know people have died,” Mr Scholz said.

The perpetrator, Ayad was arrested at the scene and later

diagnosed with paranoid schizophrenia.

He was declared of unsound mind in 2018, with criminal charges dropped.

He is currently being held in a psychiatric prison ward.

Vandalism at Inkerman and Charlie’s Hill Marina Trajkovich VANDALS have taken to Inkerman Hill and heritagelisted Charlie’s Hill, defacing both the walking trail and the historical WW2 site with derogatory messages and spray paint.

Mayor, Lyn McLaughlin said that the incident was incredibly disappointing and that investigation was underway to catch the culprits.

“Council is working with painters and professional cleaners to assess the affected areas to ensure removal of all vandalism quickly and safely. Some of the structures impacted are heritage-listed, which is incredibly disappointing,” Cr McLaughlin said.

“The vandals who committed these acts are not impressive, they are not artistic, and they are definitely not clever.

“Council Officers are assessing CCTV surveillance footage, and the culprits will be found and held accountable. We have also notified Queensland Police Service,” she said.

With works underway to restore the affected areas, the council urges residents who may have information on the vandalism or seen other damaged sites to report offenders to Crime Stoppers.

The council reminds residents that vandalism is not tolerated and that repairs to affected sites are at ratepayers expense.

BIG choices remain for the Burdekin community in determining exactly what shape and configuration the water park Council will attempt to bring to the region.

A community consultation phase has been announced, with the proposed plans being revealed to the public beginning on April 1.

Both the scale of the facility, and the pricing structure will be up for debate after an earlier round of community consultation revealed that the public were interested in a larger, more varied water park that could cater to more people in total.

Burdekin Shire Council Mayor Lyn McLaughlin says that this next phase of consultation will determine whether or not residents would like a singular water park, or one with additional water slides.

“Building a water park in the Burdekin has been on the public agenda for some time.

In 2019 following a period of community consultation, Council included a water park concept in the footprint of the Ayr Swimming Pool complex as part of the ANZAC Park Precinct Master Plan,” Cr McLaughlin said.

“The size and scale of the water park included in the Master Plan was relatively small compared to similar facilities in other Council areas; the concept would only be suitable for toddlers and

young children.

“Further discussion and anecdotal feedback have confirmed there is an opportunity to increase the scale of the proposed water park for a broader demographic and offer a unique and iconic recreation zone which will transform the water park from a Burdekin social hub to a significant regional attraction.”

As with other institutions run by other local government agencies, the council will also be aiming to reduce overhead costs by instituting an entry fee, and are looking for community consultation to guide them in what price point entry should sit at.

“Similar to other local governments who operate water parks of this scale, Council intends to recover some of the costs associated with the ongoing operations and maintenance of the water park through some form of

entry fee to the complex,” Cr McLaughlin said.

“Water parks are a significant piece of infrastructure that require maintenance throughout their life, so it is important that we are budgeting to keep the facility looking and operating at its highest standard.

“I want to encourage all residents to have their say now and guide Council’s future decision making on this significant project for our

Shire,” said Cr McLaughlin.

The plans will be open to feedback and responses from the public until April 30.

An open letter to Premier Palaszczuk

Please don’t kill off Queensland’s independent newspaper revival.

Dear Premier Palaszczuk, At a time when the Queensland government should be celebrating and supporting the strong revival of independent newspapers currently underway in our state, it appears you’re trying to kill it off.

There are now more independent regional newspaper publishers in Queensland than there has been in decades, with new papers emerging to fill the void left by closures made by News Corp.

But the new law proposed by your government threatens that resurgence and the greatly improved news media diversity it has brought to regional Queensland.

The Victorian government has recenty committed an extra $4.5million to an already healthy budget for regional newspaper advertising in that state, so why would you consider passing a law that will cut even further the relatively tiny support the Queensland government provides to regional independent newspapers?

Why do you want to funnel more state government advertising away from locally owned and independent newspaper publishers providing a critical service to regional Queenslanders to digital news sites owned predominately by global news corporations?

The law would also be a massive blow to government transparency, with important notices such as mining lease approvals and amendments to land use being published on government websites away from public gaze instead of being printed in local newspapers, as currently required by law.

Premier, the resurgence of local independent regional newspapers currently underway in Queensland is a great thing for our state - please don’t kill it off.

Healthcare improvements the target for the Burdekin community group

A COMMUNITY group composed of prominent local figures aims to improve healthcare throughout the Burdekin region following a first meeting.

The Community Advisory Network (CAN) comprises Burdekin Shire Council Mayor Lyn McLaughlin, ambulance and police service representatives, Ayr and Home Hill Health Services medical superintendent Dr Ben Lawry and directors of nursing Tracey Gabiola.

Other representatives from the residents, as well as Lorraine Dempsey, were also in attendance.

CAN Chair Dr Kaylee Boccalatte said the group plans to meet monthly and will work in tandem with the Townsville Hospital and Health Service to ensure that local healthcare reflects the community’s needs.

“There are people in lesser profiles and roles who are leaders in their own rights, and they need to be equally recognised, so on their behalf, I was glad to accept the award, give my speech and acknowledge them.”

NEW, wide-ranging COVID-19 lockdown restrictions will be in place across Queensland until 5pm on Thursday, April 1.

As part of the Queensland government’s response to the outbreak in the Greater Brisbane area, stringent measures have been employed in order to prevent the spread of the disease.

As of Monday, March 29, there is a maximum indoor limit of thirty individuals, while outdoor events must be below 500 people.

Seated eating, drinking, takeaway and delivery are all still allowed, however there is to be no standing or dancing within venues for the duration of the restrictions.

At the time of publication, the last official word on an end to the new restrictions was made by Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk during a press conference that announced two new locally transmitted cases had been discovered, one in Toowoomba and another in Bundaberg, both of whom have been traced.

“What I say to the public is – this is very encouraging and we’ll be providing you

with an update again Thursday at 9am, and fingers crossed, all will be looking good for Easter,” Premier Palaszczuk said.

Pre-existing regulations are also still in place.

In addition, new facemask regulations stipulate that you must carry a personal facemask with you at all times.

Masks must be worn while inside, and in addition, should be worn while travelling in a vehicle alongside other persons.

It is also strongly recommended that masks be worn outside while travelling through busy areas where social distancing is difficult, such as walkways and thoroughfares.

Exercising in gyms is allowed, but masks must be worn unless the activity is ‘strenuous’.

As of the time of publication, schools are currently remaining open.

FIREFIGHTERS from the Ayr Fire Station delighted children at the Ayr Community Kindergarten this week, with a fire safety display at the child care centre on Mackenzie Street.

Kids were shown around the firetruck and some of the tools of the trade by the local fireys, who also gave them a taste of the job, letting them have a go with the firehose.

Sandra Maynard, an educator at the kindergarten says that it’s always great when the firefighters visit and that the children are always excited to see them and get involved.

“It does excite the children they’re very interested in the fireys and what they do. They love seeing the fire truck,” says Sandra.

“They always have a lot of questions.”

She says that things like fire safety are great to establish at an early age and that the children are always starstruck to see the truck and tools in action.

“They go through things like basic fire safety, making sure they know what number to ring, triple zero,” says Sandra.

“They go through ‘get down low and go go go,’ or how to get out of the house in an emergency. We also make sure they know it’s important to know their address, those sorts of things,” she says.

“Every year, we try to get them in, and then when the kids see them in the community too, they’re not as scared of them when a fire does occur,” says Sandra.

Easter meets Strictly Ballroom at Burdekin Christian College Marina Trajkovich WHILE the stars of Burdekin Christian College’s Strictly Ballroom production were standouts at the Burdekin Theatre last week, accompanied by the showstopping John Paul Young for the finale, the school’s younger students also managed to steal the show.

Principal of Burdekin Christian College, Debra Creed, says that the little chickens and eggs who opened the performance also captured the audience’s hearts in time for Easter.

“I think they were amazing; the crowd absolutely loved them,” said Debra.

“We wanted the preps to

start the performance, and we were so proud of them getting up and dancing,” she says.

“For our school, it’s very important that everyone gets a chance to participate and that everyone gets a go.”

She says that having the children dressed as chickens and eggs were a great way to combine Strictly Ballroom with some Easter excitement.

“The way it segues into Strictly Ballroom, there were a lot of feathers and glitter.

It had the same theatrical elements going into it,” says Debra.

“The theatre side of things, singing and acting is great for them because it just develops so much confidence, and we noticed how confident our little ones were.”

“In a bad year pigs will eat between 500kg to a tonne of cane, but that’s not the only problem,” Mr Boccolatte said.

“It costs time and money to replace damaged fence lines, and grade areas of the farm the pigs have disturbed.

“Their digging also creates ideal conditions for chinee apple to grow.”

Mr Boccolatte was one of more than 25 Saltwater Creek cane farmers who recently attended an NQ Dry Tropics event at the Inkerman hotel focused on tackling the threat of feral pigs.

The information day was part of the Reducing Burdekin Sediment project, funded by the Queensland Government’s Natural Resources Investment Program.

Attendees were advised to join forces with neighbours to form a local “cluster group” to improve the cost-efficiency and effectiveness of feral pig management.

NQ Dry Tropics Project Officer Brad Holt said the idea was for a group of landholders to pool resources and coordinate control efforts across multiple properties.

“Instead of individual farmers simply focusing on their own patch, they can cover a bigger area by working together and sharing

the cost of aerial control,” Mr Holt said.

“Contributing a few hundred dollars a year towards a common effort is a sound business decision that will save money down the track.”

Mr Holt said that as well as impacting crops, feral pigs damaged creek banks, causing sediment runoff that reduces water quality in local waterways and the Great Barrier Reef.

“The Reducing Burdekin Sediment project has funded fencing on several properties around Saltwater Creek to prevent pigs from accessing cane, protect important wetlands, and provide a barrier to trap the animals against during control activities such as aerial shooting,” Mr Holt said.

“Mobilising farmers to work together in a cluster group is an important next step in the fight.”

Collinsville grazier Jim Hillier told growers about the success of his Bowen River cluster group, whose members had significantly reduced the impacts of pigs from their properties.

“It’s the best thing we’ve ever done,” Mr Hillier said.

“It’s the most efficient way I have found to control pigs – we all pull together to contribute funds to get the chopper in and we cleared them out.

“We keep in contact within the group so that if there’s a sighting on someone’s property we let each other know.”

strategically manage invasive weeds and animals as part of the Burdekin Dry Tropics Regional Pest Management Group (RPMG), alongside partners from local and state government, industry and landcare.

RPMG member Burdekin Shire Council was represented at the Inkerman event by Dan Mulcahy, Manager, Environmental Health Services.

Mr Mulcahy highlighted the pig-management services council offered to farmers, including a year-round 1080 baiting service, and aerial shooting around coastal areas.

Bren Fuller, a Land Protection Officer from RPMG member Whitsunday Regional Council, told participants that successful cluster groups required a “champion” to mobilise members and maintain momentum.

He said it could take a couple of years for the effort to bear fruit, which was why a long-term commitment was required from group members.

“Feral pigs can reproduce extremely quickly, damaging crops and infrastructure, and spreading weeds and disease, Mr Fuller said.

“Females can reproduce at 25kg, and in two to three years populations can double.

“You may need to hit them hard and then reduce the frequency of control over time, but you can’t walk away or they will return — if you stop you may as well not start.”

Mark Rickards, Commercial Manager at agronomy company Burdekin Productivity Services, also spoke at the event about discounts available to growers who join a cluster group.

New winter crop options for spicing up the North NORTHERN Australian farmers have the opportunity to test production of a suite of high-value spice crops, which have demonstrated their suitabilty in a series of small scale trials conducted

by CQUniversity.

Kalonji (Nigella sativa) and fennel recorded strong yield and quality levels in small plot trials conducted in the winter of 2019, paving the way for larger scale assessments on commercial farms in the upcoming winter planting window. Black sesame will also be trialled as a winter crop based on earlier field trials and climate suitability analysis.

Lead researcher, Associate Professor Surya Bhattarai,

said the three spices were not suitable for all areas of the north, with large differences in yield depending on climate and environment.

“For example, kalonji thrived in Biloela in Central Queensland, where we believe the cooler and drier winter conditions suited it better than areas like Ayr and Darwin,” Dr Bhattarai said.

“Similarly, we believe fennel will work as a winter crop in Tully and Ayr, while black sesame shows potential to be grown as either a summer or a winter crop in Ayr, Tully and Darwin.”

Australia and supported by seed company AgriVentis Technologies, which is assessing the suitability of black sesame, fennel, carraway, kalonji, and cumin to broadacre production at six sites across Queensland and the Northern Territory.

Two other spices trialled – cumin and kalijiri – did not perform well enough in the initial small plot assessments to warrant further investigation at this stage.

“Further selection pressure during plant breeding, and optimization of agronomy, including planting time, is

required to improve yields of those varieties and their suitability to Australian production systems.

“The next step is to assess the performance of kalonji, black sesame and fennel at a larger scale more reflective of the commercial production conditions,” Dr Bhattarai said.

“We are seeking expressions of interest from farmers in these regions to plant up to one hectare of these spice crops and work with our research team to assess their performance in real-world growing conditions.”

What’s on Old People’s Home for 4 Year Olds, Season 2 intergenerational interactions and community engagement can help seniors live healthier and happier lives, reducing their need to go into an assisted home.

The documentary seeks to explore alternative options for seniors that relieve the pressure on Australia’s

EMMY & AACTA awardwinning Old People’s Home for 4-Year-Olds is returning to screens for a second season, premiering on ABC TV and iview on April 6th.

Season one of the documentary and intergenerational social experiment introduced 11 residents from a retirement

village and 10 preschoolers, who were brought together for daily activities.

The aim of the project, to see if uniting young and old could improve the health and happiness of older adults at the retirement home.

For season two, the experiment has been reversed, documenting a new

group of older Australians as they join a bunch of lively 4-year-olds, in a purposebuilt pre-school, for fun, learning and friendship.

Unlike the previous retirement village residents, the new group of seniors all live in their own homes, the crux of the project, to focus on early intervention

and reconnect them to their community.

1.6 million Australians over the age of 65, currently live at home alone, and the crux of the new project focuses on helping aging Australians maintain their independence by combatting loneliness.

Home Hill Junior Cricket season wraps up with awards Home Hill Cricket Club THE junior cricket season wrapped up this week at the Nutrien Ag Solutions Cricket Grounds in Home Hill. We mixed the under 13s and under 15s on Friday afternoon for a fun game to finish off the 20/21 season.

The scorers were given the afternoon off so no stats were recorded for this game; it was just an enjoyable game and all the children had a good time.

It was back to business for our Under 13 Blue team on Saturday morning as they played Wests in their last T20 of the regular season in Townsville. We won the toss and elected to bat first and was soon one wicket down for 19 runs in the third over.

by Rowdy King, Thomas Cardillo, Leo Olditch and Lucas Town helped us reach a respectable total of 172 off our 20 overs. Lucas was our top scorer this week with 38 runs not out, followed by Rowdy on 32 runs.

All of our bowlers bowled very economically, so after 10 overs, Wests had only 26 runs on the board. We didn’t get a wicket until the 15th over, but the win was out of reach for them by that time. Only two wickets fell in Wests’ innings, and both were runouts by direct hits from Thomas Cardillo. No bowlers got wickets, but the lack of runs scored by Wests won the game for us. Three of our best were Lucas Town 0/3, Rowdy King 0/4 and Sienna Lago 0/5.

Home Hill won the game by

98 runs, and it was then down to a countback of runs for and against during the season to see if we were into the final.

Unfortunately, it was a mere 5 runs differential that put us out of playing in the final of the T20 season.

Saturday afternoon was the 20/21 presentations of awards and trophies for the Home Hill Cricket Association.

This is the culmination of a season that started back in October last year and for some of the children had them playing up to 40 games of cricket in Home Hill, Townsville and other parts of Queensland. I think most of the senior players present were impressed with the impressive statistics of some of our junior players who received trophies.

Canefield Ashes set to return

THE Home Hill Cricket Association is getting their wickets ready for their annual fundraiser in April, with money raised during the Canefield Ashes Carnival supporting the club and the Icon Cancer Centre in Townsville.

Alexander Romeo says the carnival will be a great weekend of socialising and competition for cricket enthusiasts and novices alike.

“There’s cricket for all kinds of players whether it’s just social or you like to play competitively. We’ve got

four different grades plus a junior grade for those who are under fifteen,” says Alexander.

“It’s the club’s major fundraiser but it’s also a fundraiser for cancer,” he says.

While the club normally dedicates 25% of funds raised to the Queensland Cancer Council, this year they’ve decided to send it closer to home, supporting new equipment for a Townsville based oncology unit.

“Over the last fifteen years, we’ve donated about $40,000

for Queensland Cancer,” says Alexander.

“This year we’re actually giving 25% of the profits to the Icon oncology unit. We’re gonna tally up the money raised and then actually go out and buy the things they may need, whether it’s tv’s or beds, that’s where the money is going to be spent,” he says.

“This way we can actually see what our money has gone towards and I think a lot of people will be happy to see that. A lot of people from the Burdekin who get cancer

will go there so they’ll get benefit from that as well.”

Attendees can expect an exuberant weekend of cricket, with live entertainment from Home Hill’s own performer Megan Law among other festivities.

“For Saturday night, one of our team has actually organised a pig on a spit. We’ve got dinner and live music and then we’re back again on Sunday,” says Alexander.

“It’s just a fun weekend, a great event to catch up with old friends and support the local cricket club

while helping us raise money for cancer. It’s something that affects a lot of people in the world and everyone can relate to that cause.

“The carnival also helps us to buy new equipment, keep our grounds maintained, make improvements that help bring in new members to the club.”

22 SPORT RESULTS Ayr Golf Club

Thursday Club Golf saw a good field of 37 players take to the fairways for a single Stableford event. The winner was Jayson Dowie, who played an awesome game to be just two over par off the stick. His score of 26 points was well ahead of Bob Clerke’s 23 point tally. Bob secured second place from Callan Oar (23 points) on a draw of the cards.

John McKeough was fourth with 21 points. The Nearest the Pins were won by Aicey Zaro (8A), Alfred Henaway (8B), Callan Oar (9A), Stephen Zaro (9B), Mick Mallie (12B) and Brad Patti (18A).

The popular D & S Quality Meat tray and the carton were both won by Jon Lena. Jon completed the treble of major wins on the night by winning the Jackpot on the night’s last draw. His Jackpot win has made it a family affair for 2021 after his father was the first Thursday Club Jackpot winner this year just over a month ago.

On Sunday, there were four matches played. In Game 1, the trio of Dave Sheehan, Joy Woods and Steve Nellestein got the chocolates in their encounter with Rhys Sheehan, Jamie Woods and Gary Pearce. The match was dominated by the lesson Joy Woods gave Jamie Woods in tight consistent bowling. In Game 2, the trio of Nev Dickinson, Vince Beitia and Ray Paneccasio showed

resilience and a hard underbelly to put together a remarkable run of four end wins at the end of the match to overcome what looked like a foregone conclusion. The trio of Mick McCloskey, Wayne Coonan and Peter Henderson was left pondering what might have been. In Game 3, Doug Robins and Alan Garioch attacked at every opportunity and could not dominate Rob Jorgensen and Joe Yipinazar. Doug and Alan, despite the resistance, were good enough to pull off the shot to win the match. In Game 4, Henry Hazel and Leo Kenny going into the last end were two shots up in a seesawing contest.

In the last bowl, Richard Mau and Ken Ferguson were facing defeat only for Richie to bowl a doozie, pick up the kitty, move it across to their bowls to pick up three shots, and win the match by one. Matches will be on again on Friday night with names in by 6:00 pm for a 6:30 pm start. The normal Sunday social bowls will be on with names in by 1:00 pm for a 1:30 pm start.

The club pennants team will be playing against Ayr, Bowen and Wangaratta at the Ayr club on the 11th of April. It is a full day of bowls commencing at 8:30 am, with players expected to be there around 8:00 am.

Burdekin Rugby League

After a year off when Covid caused all Senior Grade Rugby League matches cancelled, this years fixtures will resume this weekend with all matches played at Brothers on Friday and Saturday.

Last year only Brothers and Norths fielded teams and they played in the Mackay competition with Brothers being minor premiers in A Grade but losing the final to Wests.

Norths never won a game in that competition,.

This year all seven clubs will be represented by A grade, reserves, under 19 and Ladies.

This weekend all but Norths will be playing with Brothers to host Western on Friday night and Charters Towers to meet Centrals with the Roosters playing Herbert River all on Saturday.

The A Grade between the Crushers and the Roosters will be on Number one field starting at 4.30 pm following the Centrals – Charters Towers match at 3.00 pm.

The Roosters reserves will play the River at 2.30 on number two field.

The ladies match between the Hens and the Lady Crushers will be on number three field at 1.00 pm followed by the Roosters – Crushers under 19 match on number three field at 2.20 pm.

A Grade coach Chris Perry knows the Crushers are always hard to beat under coach Mitchell Seri.

They have lost a few players but have brought in at least three from Townsville including former Cowboy Wayne Illugia and Mitchell Grimes from Norths and goal kicking winger Zac Sillis from Brothers.

Perry does hope that Figian second rower Nui Maitamavora,two club Intrust Cup player Lona Kaifoto and hard running forward Dylan Carew are all back from injury.

Perry also has big hopes for his son Kurt in doing damage in the centres.

The halves former Figian International World Cup player Cali Nauque and youngster Declan Dowson went well in two trial matches and by now would have built up a combination.

Ben Smith will take a young reserve grade side in while the Under 19 team should contain a number of the premiership winning under 17 boys from last year.

Two who have shone so far are half Rhett Williams and forward Brendan Cotter.

The ladies match will be interesting.

The Hens beat old rival Brothers at Rugby Park three weeks ago and will be keen to open their account against a new team in the competition.

Little is known about the Crushers girls but they did win a trial a fortnight ago in Ingham.

The Hens have unearthed a couple of new players in Akeliah Williams, Jo Morgan, Indy Everett and Jess Clift and they shaped up well in the win over Brothers.

Frank Beer will have the girls ready to go and start off with a win.

It is heartbreaking for the clubs, the players, their families and most importantly, the supporters? The games have become quicker, and an exhilarating spectacle but is it worth the injuries?

Rabbitohs V Broncos How good has Wayne Bennett got the Rabbitohs performing at the moment? They have been clinical in picking their opponent’s defence apart and mounting some lightning attack. The Rabbits have been very dominant over their opponents in the last 3 games.

There is nothing to say in support of the Broncos 1 win from 4, and the 1 win was only against the hapless Bulldogs, who haven’t scored a point for 3 games. Its master coach Bennett V’s the old apprentice Kevin Walters to develop the match-winning game plan in this game. With the willy old coach in Bennett at the helm, I can’t see the Broncos getting close. An easy win for the Rabbits at home.

Warriors V Sea Eagles Warriors have played unlucky with a few close losses and 2 strong wins against the Titans and Raiders, especially their exciting comeback against the Raiders. Except for this week getting towelled up by the high-flying Roosters they have been powerful. With the Warriors playing at their home away home on the Central Coast, I really can’t see the Sea Eagles getting close the way they have been playing. The Sea

Eagles have really been poor in performance in both attack and defence, and with no wins, I really can’t see them turning it around. Warriors to win and win in on the back of their powerful forwards in a canter over a hapless Sea Eagles.

Panthers V Raiders Wow, this could be the match of the round with the undefeated Panthers at home against the gutsy never say die Raiders. The question is can Ricky Stuart get his Raiders up for this one against last year’s minor premiers at home.

Expect a brutal game early on as both packs try to take control of the middle. It will be a hard second half for the Raiders with the Panthers superior attack and fanatical support from the Panthers fans.

Titans V Knights Knights have now lost 2 in a row. With Mitchel Pearce, their best player who controls everything in attack out for 10 weeks making 11 of their top 30 players out injured, they will suffer a lot of misery for a few weeks. With the Titans playing entertaining football and showing a tremendous improvement this year, it will be hard to beat them at home, and I can’t see the Knights getting close. Titans to win and win easily at home.

Bulldogs V Storm We could see poor-performing Dogs cross the line in this game and finally score their first points in 3 weeks. This could just about be the Bulldogs only excitement in this game and see them do a lap of honour. I can’t see the Bulldogs getting

close to the Storm team, who played themselves back into some form last weekend, even at home. The Storm to win and win easy. The two questions are; will Storm score 50 points, and can the Dogs cross the line and score?

Roosters V Sharks Roosters return to form last week with a home game is a terrifying result for the battling Sharks. Then the Roosters get the benefit of a second home game in a week at the historic and beautiful Sydney Cricket Ground. They’ll be way too strong for the Sharks even after the Sharks win last weekend in a canter against a terrible Cowboys. Roosters to win in a tight game – don’t write the gutsy Sharks off, though.

West Tigers V Cowboys The beautiful Leichhardt Oval really brings excitement to the game. This will be a considerable advantage against mistake-ridden Cowboys. With the Tigers coming off a great win against the Knights and a real battle where they took the undefeated Parramatta, I can’t see them losing this game.

Happy to be wrong, but I can’t see the Cowboys turning their form around. Todd Payton is facing a massive dilemma over the Cowboys performance.

Parramatta V Dragons What a fantastic game this will be, and what an awesome game to finish round 5. Parramatta is undefeated in second place with 4 wins and the very much improved Dragons in sixth place with 3 wins.

Considering the Dragons newfound power game and super aggressive defence, watch for a demanding first 2530 minutes. Parramatta wins on the back of their home ground, but they will need to focus and not make errors like in the last 2 games. Be prepared for a brutal take no prisoners battle.

JUNIOR SWIMMER WINS BIG

Jedd Giddy is still riding high, following his bronze medal success at Brisbane’s State Swimming Championships this month.

Marina Trajkovich AT just eleven years old, Jedd Giddy is already a familiar name within the Burdekin’s swimming and Surf LifeSaving community.

He’s been swimming since he was a mere few weeks old and has been smashing his goals in the pool, recently coming back from the State Swimming Championships in Brisbane with a bronze medal for his 200-metre backstroke.

His mother, Amanda Giddy, says that watching him swim his final third place backstroke lap from the stand was a surreal moment for the family, one Jedd had been training for all year.

“Over the last 12 months, Jedd set some goals, and one of those goals was to win a medal at school states,” says Amanda, who also used to swim competitively.

“We’re still a little bit overwhelmed that he won a medal this year. We’re immensely proud of him.

“He probably started swimming lessons when he was three months old and just hasn’t stopped. He does train really hard, but it also comes naturally to him,” she says.

The event follows another recent State competition on the Gold coast, where Jedd represented the North Barrier Branch at the Queensland Junior Surf Lifesaving Championships, among other teammates from the Ayr Surf Life Saving Club.

“He made four of the semi-finals across different categories and also the finals for his surf race,” says Amanda.

“He came 22nd in the surf swim out of hundreds as well.”

Amanda says she’s

incredibly proud of her son’s swimming success and grateful to the coaches that have helped make his goals a reality.

“This success has come not just from his determination and hard work but with the help of some pretty special people in his life that have helped coach him these past few years.

“Coaches Mick & Kim McConnachie, who attended these school championships to offer their guidance and support and to see him win his first State Medal.

“Sage Hisatake has also coached him in the pool and for Surf Lifesaving, and Lisa Furnell has also contributed to his coaching,” she says.

“He has a go at everything and puts his heart into everything he does. He just loves his surf lifesaving and his swimming.”

Then on Saturday the Premier and Reserve Men are away to Warriors with the 2nd Division away to Brothers White. The Premiers are not at home until Round 3 on 24 April with the Women’s Premier and Reserves and Funkies are all at home in Round 2 next weekend.

For the Juniors, talented young footballers from Wide Bay, Central Queensland, Mackay, North and Far North Queensland were in action in Townsville on Easter Saturday in the regional Skill Acquisition Phase (SAP) and Talent Support Program (TSP) Carnivals. Local girls involved were Charlotte Dal Santo, Kya Quagliatta, Ellyana Mugica, who captained the Under13/14girls team and Braelyn Cole while the boys included Sam Nucifora and Lucas Goodman. Locally team training will begin on 21 April and the season opening will be on 24 April, the ANZAC Day weekend.

Monday Night Masters Soccer was rained off again and true believers are starting to think that someone is trying to tell us something! So, we will try again next week.

The Olyroos are one of the sixteen countries who have qualified for the Tokyo Olympics. They will find out their opponents when the draw is made on 21 April.

Australia is one of the three Asian countries to qualify with Europe having four countries and Africa just three. The Matildas are one of the twelve womens countries to have qualified and their draw will also be made on the 21 April.

In the A League with seven rounds left before the finals Central Coast somehow continues to stay at the top ladder after accounting for Adelaide 2-1 who drops to fourth place. Melbourne City has moved up to second place with a 3-2 win against Wellington and new club Macarthur beat Perth 2-0 to move into to third spot.

“Over the last fifteen years, we’ve donated about $40,000 for Queensland Cancer,” says Alexander.

“This year we’re actually giving 25% of the profits to the Icon oncology unit. We’re

gonna tally up the money raised and then actually go out and buy the things they may need, whether it’s tv’s or beds, that’s where the money is going to be spent,” he says.

“This way we can actually see what our money has gone towards and I think a lot of people will be happy to see that. A lot of people from the Burdekin who get cancer will go there so they’ll get benefit from that as well.”

Attendees can expect an exuberant weekend of cricket, with live entertainment from Home Hill’s own performer Megan Law among other festivities.

“For Saturday night, one

of our team has actually organised a pig on a spit.

We’ve got dinner and live music and then we’re back again on Sunday,” says Alexander.

“It’s just a fun weekend, a great event to catch up with old friends and support the local cricket club while helping us raise money for cancer. It’s something that affects a lot of people in the world and everyone can relate to that cause.

“The carnival also helps us to buy new equipment, keep our grounds maintained, make improvements that help bring in new members to the club.”

It was a football free weekend for the Burdekin Panthers who start the 2021 season this weekend.

The competition, which was expecting to foster 28 teams during last year’s cancelled event, is expecting around the same amount this year.

“We traditionally have many participants completing their first events and we are very proud that our event is a catalyst for getting people moving and generally being more active.”

BURDEKIN SUGAR RUSH SET FOR BIG RETURN AS MARATHON YEAR TAKES SHAPE Daniel Shirkie THE Burdekin Sugar Rush running festival is set to return this year after an unfortunate hiatus due to the COVID-19 pandemic, and organisers couldn’t be more thrilled.

The running event, which features a slew of events for runners of all skill levels and abilities and seeks to promote health and wellbeing will be held on Sunday, April 18.

But this year, the stakes will be even higher, with the Sugar Rush functioning as the curtain-pulling opener for the Athletics North Queensland half-marathon series.

Burdekin Road Runners president Pat Shannon says the event will also be the first of it’s kind since COVID

restrictions have been implemented.

“Our race is the first of the ANQ half marathon series each year and the first since COVID restrictions were implemented,” Mr Shannon said.

“We have had a change of venue back to our original, Anzac Park, and have experienced a few challenges in organising the event in order to meet COVID social distancing guidelines.”

“We have a great team who have made these changes much easier to implement.”

While the event is obviously considerably more work with restrictions still in place in some areas and the COVID-19 pandemic still ongoing, the club’s excitement at returning after

last year’s bitter pill hasn’t been impacted at all.

“As a club and a running community we are very excited about the prospect of the 2021 Sugar Rush going ahead after the disappointment of the 2020 event being cancelled at short notice due to COVID-19,” Mr Shannon said.

While the last minute cancellation last year was a hefty blow to the region’s committed runners and those interested in taking part, Mr Shannon says that fortunately, the conditions this year will allow for a mostly unaltered event to take place.

“We are very fortunate that the event will run mostly as our regulars are used to, although there will be no

formal presentations this year,” Mr Shannon said.

“All runners will still receive their finisher towels and breakfast as per usual, we will be asking participants and supporters to follow all the social distancing instructions and guidelines on the day.”

Aside from the competitive aspect, the event has long been a proponent of healthy activity and the promotion of physical activity, something that Mr Shannon’s particularly glad to bring back this year.

“The Burdekin Sugar Rush is the marquee event for our club and provides a fantastic platform for recreational runners and walkers to achieve their health and fitness goals,” Mr Shannon said.
