Row for a Cure conquered for 2020 Over $137,000 raised for brain cancer research Hayden Menso hayden.menso@burdekinlocal.com.au THE INFINITE LOVE IS THE CURE. Words our community has come to know so well over the past 20 months, since the inception of the Laurie’s Love foundation.

Over the weekend, the Burdekin certainly delivered on those words.

Hosting a bigger and better event for 2020, the 24hr Row for a Cure united 11 teams of rowers and spectators to raise vital funds for brain cancer research.

The spectacle was one not to be missed, with the sheer determination from all rowers to push through the day-long rowathon.

With fundraising from all teams, the event raised a stellar $137,000 to date for research into a cure for brain cancer.

Laurie’s Love President Julie Pavone said the event was overwhelmingly positive, an honour of the late Laurence Pavone’s legacy.

“His message of what he was trying to achieve has been understood, that’s most rewarding. So many goals smashed, in teams and as a whole event,” Mrs Pavone said.

“It was a replica of everything Laurence stood for,

the coming together of people sharing love, fun and excitement.”

Speaking about the final moments of the event on Sunday, it was clear the row was a huge community success.

“There was a buzz in the room, with everyone coming together, laughing, crying, it was very emotional. Remembering those lost and fighting, I’m so proud of what was achieved that day. It’s turned into something more than the money, but it’s changed the way people live their lives.”

READY for lift-off, a new space project is set to arrive in North Queensland.

Bowen has been labelled as the perfect destination for a rocket launch site, set to project essential space satellites high in the sky.

The site will be developed

by the LNP if elected in October’s state election.

Speaking to media at a recent press conference announcing the project, LNP members said if elected, the site will be developed almost immediately.

“The LNP are taking Bowen from being the mango capital of Australia, to the space capital of Australia” Member for Dawson George Christensen said.

Last saying it would be a boost for the region.

“Within a couple of years, you’re going to see monthly launches, and isn’t that going to put Bowen, and Queensland more broadly, on the map?”

SAM COX, a Burdekin local who has spent his life living and working on the land is re-entering the world of state politics. Representing the Burdekin for Katter’s Australian Party, he speaks to the Burdekin Local about his plans for the future and what we can expect from him in this year’s election.

Tell us a bit more about yourself and your connection to the Burdekin?

I’m from the Burdekin originally, my family owned a cattle station and sugar cane farm, a cattle and cane operation that we had since the 1920s, so we’re a fifth generation family in the Burdekin.

I married an Ayr lady and as I say I was born, bred and married in the Burdekin and hopefully I’ll be buried in the Burdekin.

What can we expect from you if you get elected this year?

Put pretty simply, what you’re gonna get from me is different from either of the major party candidates. So the LNP and ALP candidates, we know are parties that are based in Brisbane.

Which is great if you live in Brisbane but not if you live outside of Brisbane.

I’m running for Katter’s Australian Party, they’re the only party that have

their base in North Queensland.

So what you’re gonna get from me is, it doesn’t matter who forms government after the election, you’re gonna get someone who will represent the whole district, the whole electorate in Brisbane because at the end of the day we need to keep the major parties accountable.

We’ve seen already at the beginning of the campaign, billions of dollars promised all of a sudden from roads to dams, to health, to hospitals already to all these little towns all along North Queensland, why does it take an election for all these promises to come?

I’ll tell you why, it’s only now because they’re chasing votes.

I’ve had a lifetime living in this part of the world. I’ve got a track record from when I was a state MP for what I delivered for my seat. Whether it’s being tough on crime and bringing crime rates down, or delivering bridges and road works in the electorate or debating legislation for the area.

What makes you stand out from other candidates and how can you use your experience to benefit the Burdekin?

I guess knowledge, experience and

understanding of the issues. The Burdekin electorate, I say it’s one of the richest, more prosperous electorates in Queensland. You’ve got coal, cattle, cane and coral.

To start with you’ve got Bowen’s horticultural industry there, which is a huge employer and a huge asset to the economy but Bowen also has beautiful beaches, so tourism is a big part of this electorate.

You’ve got the coal industry which I’m a big supporter of, I’m a big supporter of coal fired power stations and I’m still pushing for that to be built in Collinsville.

The sugar industry, cattle industry because I’ve been a part of it, I know it inside out. I’ve always fought for things whether that be the code of conduct, a federal issue which I worked behind the scenes really hard to help get it across the line, whether it be the reef regulations or whether it be vegetation management.

You were originally a member for the Liberal National Party and then campaigned with Pauline Hanson’s One Nation party before now running with Katter’s Australian Party. Can you talk to me about what attracted you to the KAP? I joined the LNP so the Liberal National Party, at the time the coalition, was something that I was

attracted to and I thought I’ll go to Brisbane and if I get in then I’ll be part of the big government of the day and make changes.

The reason I’m now running with KAP is, in the LNP I was ostracised, I was not allowed to reelect for the seat in Townsville in 2017. My nomination was declined.

I had been speaking out at the time as a member of North Queensland about what was needed up here.

I was basically told that if I did not shut my mouth I would not be preselected and I didn’t agree to that of course and it was as simple as that, I was not allowed to apply for preselection for the seat of Townsville.

I’ve got a lot of farmers and cane farmers in the Burdekin who have asked me to run because of what I have done for the industry and a few sugar mill workers and workers in the coal mines because they know what I stand up for. I will not be answering to some Brisbane based executive.

I’ll be responding to the people of my electorate if I win and that’s how it should be.

I was the one who was asked to leave the party. I did not jump ship. I did run with Pauline Hansen in the last election. Because she’s an Australian senator in central parliament I saw it as an opportunity.

The reason I’m not running with Pauline Hanson now is that I had chosen not to run again, I had no intention, which is obvious by my late announcement.

Robbie Katter and I have been friends since 2012 and he’s been discussing specific issues in North Queensland with me over the last five years. They had been asking me to join the Katter party and to run

Council update Grants open for Burdekin community groups Round two of Burdekin Shire Council’s 2020 Community Grants Program is now available, with all community and sporting groups encouraged to apply for funding before Sunday 25 October.

The program provides up to $5,000 to groups and organisations in a broad range of areas to benefit the wider community.

Burdekin Shire Council Mayor Lyn McLaughlin said previous rounds had contributed to several groups

and events.

“The Burdekin Shire Council Community Grants Program is a fantastic opportunity for groups with existing activities and events as well as those with ideas for new initiatives to get them off the ground and make our community a more vibrant and exciting place,” Cr McLaughlin said.

“Previous recipients include the Burdekin Singers’ production of Lion King Junior, the Rotary Club of Home Hill’s Vintage Markets, and the Burdekin Water Festival’s Night Markets and Street Parade.

“Funding will be allocated to groups developing new or existing programs within the Burdekin, hosting minor or major festivals with broad community benefit, projects promoting local sustainability, and projects or events supporting civic pride.”

Giru residents set to have their say The Giru community will be the first in the Burdekin to participate in a new community wellbeing program when the Our Town, Our Future workshop is held at the Giru Hall on Wednesday, 14 October.

The community-led, Councilfacilitated initiative encourages the community to provide their opinions on activities and initiatives to build wellbeing in the community.

Burdekin Shire Council Mayor Lyn McLaughlin said the forums would eventually be held in each of the Burdekin’s communities.

“While the Burdekin is comprised of two principal townships which act as its administrative and commercial hubs, our Shire is home to a range of other communities. It is vital to facilitate engagement activities in each of these communities to better build community capacity,” Cr McLaughlin said.

“The Our Town, Our Future community wellbeing program is substantial for the Burdekin’s community development by connecting with communities across the Shire and seeking feedback on their community’s connectedness,

liveability and equity to identify and enhance wellbeing.

“I encourage all Giru residents to RSVP to the community workshop on Wednesday 14 October – this is a fantastic opportunity for the community to come together and share what they believe makes their town great.”

Alva Beach Clean-up a success The Alva Beach Clean-up last week saw plenty of passionate volunteers getting involved in helping prevent ocean pollution. But the vast amount of rubbish found was a dire reminder there’s still a long way to go.

Marina Trajkovich THE ALVA Beach Clean-up last weekend drew over 30 volunteers from the region and beyond, collecting and documenting rubbish for ReefClean and Tangaroa Blue.

By the end of the day, a total of 31.5 bags of debris and larger items were collected weighing a total of 294kgs, almost a hundred kilograms more than last year.

Amber Kellett, from Cairns, is a project coordinator with Tangaroa Blue working on beach cleanups throughout the state.

“I did my first clean up with them about five years ago, and I really liked the fact that it’s not just picking up the rubbish it’s counting the data and creating change in legislation.

“It’s not just cleaning up after the problem, it’s trying to stop it at the source.

“A big thing, for me personally, I really try to push for education. Because people don’t care about what they

don’t know about, so the more people know, the more they can do,” says Amber.

The organisation urges people to make mindful changes that reduce plastic consumption, like choosing reusable over single-use disposable plastics.

Becoming recycling savvy and starting a compost bin are other great ways to prevent methane-creating organic waste and other recyclable materials ending up in a landfill.

After volunteers had spent the morning cleaning the beach, the rubbish was sorted into detailed categories, giving a clearer insight into the problem.

This year, the top culprit on the beach was hard plastic remnants totalling 2,477 pieces of unidentifiable hard plastic scraps.

Volunteers also found 1004 traces of soft plastic remnants which includes plastic bags

and confectionery wrappers, found to be a particularly prominent rubbish item.

The third highest rubbish count was for plastic lids and bottle tops, totalling 317 collected in the few hours of the cleanup.

Hailing from Ayr, Giru and Townsville, travellers in the area, the volunteers also included people from New South Wales.

Darshan Kaur and her family are Ayr locals who joined the clean up last Saturday.

“I thought we should go and clean for our community and for ourselves as well. When it’s clean, it’s good for everyone.”

“My children are always happy to do these things, so I’m glad we did something for nature and the community,” says Darshan.

THE proposed pipeline to take water from the Burdekin River through to Bowen and agricultural areas in between could have a good chance of going ahead after the State Election on Saturday, October 31, following support for the project from the two major parties with candidates contesting the Burdekin electorate.

A question relevant to the future of the pipeline was recently directed to two of the candidates for Burdekin – the sitting member Dale Last (LNP) and one of his opponents, Michael Brunker (ALP): The proposed water pipeline from Home Hill to Bowen will be of tremendous benefit to the Home Hill community, especially in the construction period – is there anything the state can do to assist Local Government to get this project moving ASAP? Mr Last, in his response, said “This is a project that has been talked about for years. It’s the time actually to make it happen, and if that means the State Government needs to step in, then an LNP government will do just that.”

He said both the producers who are calling for the water and the people of Home Hill deserve action and our community deserves the jobs.

“There are 100,000 hectares of arable land in the Burdekin-Bowen-Collinsville area that only needs water to create even more opportunities and more jobs,” Mr Last continued.

“Home Hill is a key part of developing that land and of growing the industries, so I would hope we would see jobs during the construction of the pipeline and jobs created from the expansion of primary production.

“All of the critical infrastructure in terms of roads, rail and power already exists, so it is simply a matter of running the pipeline and letting the opportunities flow.”

Mr Brunker, currently a councillor on the Whitsunday Regional Council, said they had got the two Councils (Burdekin and Whitsunday) together to talk about the pipeline.

“Both councils met, and it is now in the hands of the proponents to apply to the Co-Ordinator-Generals Department,” he said. “They will need to write to the State Government first, and then, if they are eligible for a grant, they would then apply to the Federal Government for the grant.”

Mr Brunker said he would certainly advocate for the project if elected as the representative for the seat of Burdekin.

Mr Brown also referred to comments from the two candidates relevant to the future of the Burdekin College of TAFE at Home Hill.

As part of pre-election comments, Mr Last and Mr Brunker were asked “What is the future of the TAFE College in the Burdekin? There has been a lot of advertising for TAFE education in the Townsville region this year. Still, it seems to be of little relevance to the Burdekin TAFE College complex, which has been under-used for many years and many students would have to travel to Townsville to undertake courses that were originally available in the local college.”

Mr Last said: “The LNP has a very clear commitment to developing regional industries, like agriculture and introducing new sectors like the space launch facility to our south.

“As these industries are re-energised and created, I think we will see demand for training increase, and there is a vital role for TAFE colleges like the one in the Burdekin to help fulfil that training need.

“A significant majority of the product grown by the users of the Bowen Pipeline will be for the export markets.

“The reliable water supply will permit the growing of the vast volumes of produce required for these overseas consumers,” he said.

To place it in perspective, Mr Brown said Japan alone has six times the Australian population.

“That is but one country where Australia has recently signed a Free Trade Agreement (FTA). There are also FTA’s with South Korea, Singapore and Indonesia.

“Burdekin TAFE has the potential to be a very useful source of the personnel we will require in the future, given the way technology is moving with robotics, planting, picking and packaging automation, logistics, and aerial drones to name but a few categories.

“We will also need electricians, carpenters, plumbers, administration together with all the usual trades and careers,” Mr Brown concluded.

“I would like to see trade-related courses run out of the Burdekin TAFE because that is a good fit for this community and we desperately need more tradies across all disciplines,” he said.

ALP candidate Michael Brunker said they understood how important it is to provide local opportunities to Burdekin students.

“That’s why we have already committed $850k of funding for maintenance and refurbishment works at the Burdekin TAFE,” he advised. “This will deliver a new studentindustry collaboration learning centre to support early childhood education and community service training.

“The refurbishment works will also include modernisation of the trade facilities to reenergise the local skill base for the engineering industry,” Mr Brunker said.

Mr Brown said that, as to the Burdekin TAFE, Bowen Pipeline Project would be amenable to using the TAFE facilities as its head office during construction to assist with refurbishment costs.

“We propose to canvas the proposal with TAFE in due course,” he said.

WHEN Shirley Gilmore was first diagnosed with breast cancer in 1990, she quickly found that there weren’t a lot of support options out there.

From running the maternity ward in the local hospital for 30 years and becoming known in the community for her care, she felt alone in what was an isolating and daunting experience facing a disease still relatively unknown.

“In those days, cancer was a death sentence, nobody knew a lot about it, it wasn’t talked about,” she says.

After finding a small lump in her breast and getting checked by her doctor, Shirley asked for a mammogram that came back negative.

Then she noticed that the lump was growing and decided to get rechecked.

“Waiting for that result is probably one of the worst feelings because you’ve got a couple of days to wait, you’re in limbo. And then you get that news that it is positive.

“You look at your kids and think, now how do I tell the kids that mum’s got breast cancer.

“My two daughters were in Brisbane, and my son here was only 14, and I prayed to God, I said ‘Please let me raise this child.’ He was too young to lose his mum.”

After diagnosis, Shirley had a mastectomy and went to Brisbane to undergo radiotherapy, thankful that the location of the cancer cells meant a high chance of avoiding chemo.

“You think you’re okay and then just like that, all of a sudden your whole world changes.

“You’ve got a lot of questions, but you haven’t got many answers. There was no support in the district.

“A lot has changed with the help out there.

The thing is knowing who to ask and where to get that help.”

When Shirley was finally declared cancerfree and moved back to the Burdekin, she says that routine and getting back to her nursing work helped her move on with her life.

Despite later developing lymphedema in one of her arms, a build-up of fluid resulting in huge swelling post-surgery, she has since

managed the condition. She is grateful that breast cancer never returned.

“Mentally, I think I was pretty good.

There were days where I did get worried.

I’m a pretty strong person and going back to work where all my friends were; I think that saved me, just getting on.

“If there were a woman diagnosed with breast cancer, the doctor would say ‘Shirley can you talk to them?’ Which I did, and then I realised, my goodness me, we do need something in the Burdekin.”

Shirley has now been running her support groups in the area for the last 26 years.

Initially running the meetings from her home, she continued with her full-time nursing position, working the night shift on a Thursday afternoon and running the support group during the day.

Training with the Cancer Council in Townsville equipped her with more knowledge and resources to help other women.

“There were no breast cancer nurses in those days, and women well and truly needed support groups. Now the nurses take over a big part of that support, which is excellent.

“I believe breast care nurses are just the most wonderful thing that women could ever have and rely on when they’re on a breast cancer journey. They are marvellous and well needed.”

At 78 she is proud of the work she has done. Although she’s ready to take

a well-deserved step back from the support group, she remains a voice in the community for anyone who needs it.

During October, she usually runs a Pink Lady High Tea, raising money for the Breast Cancer Network Australia for Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

This year COVID restrictions are thwarting fundraising efforts.

Another organisation feeling the impacts of COVID restrictions is the McGrath Foundation, a charity that provides women with breast care nurses.

When Jane McGrath, fighting a second diagnosis of breast cancer told her best friend Tracy Bevan she had met an angel, Tracy worried she had lost her mind.

“She said ‘I met an angel, and she’s my breast care nurse, and I’d like you to know that this time going through breast cancer is going to be so much better. I don’t want you to worry about me, and if you’ve got any questions, you can call her.’

“For me as a friend, I didn’t realise how stressed I was for her, but I felt my shoulders relax when she told me that,” says Tracy.

“That’s the reason the McGrath Foundation raises funds for breast care nurses because of her experience with and without a nurse.

“We’ve been able to support close to 90,000 families. I made a promise to her on her death bed that I was going to continue what we started.”

Foundation, urges people to get involved in Breast Cancer Awareness Month as the organisation explores COVID friendly alternatives for raising muchneeded funds.

“It’s amazing that people all over Australia are looking to fundraise for us.

We all know that it’s not going to be like previous years, but every dollar counts.”

Although huge events aren’t an option, people across Australia are participating in ‘Pink Up Your Town,’ a campaign that started when Mudgee shone a bright pink light onto the town’s clocktower in support of breast cancer survivors.

People across Australia are invited to donate in support of breast cancer, participating in any way they can by wearing pink or spreading the colour across their homes, towns and workplaces.

“There are families in Australia who are going through such an incredibly tough time, you hear about single mothers diagnosed, you hear about mothers with children who are sick or going through a divorce. It’s not just about the breast cancer diagnosis its such a tough time in their lives that they need that support.

Budd Williamson Bull Rider

Local bull rider, mechanic and barber Budd Williamson has seen many parts of the world, but will always call the Burdekin home.

How did growing up in the Burdekin shape your career path?

Growing up in a rural area, and the parents being involved in the horses and cattle shaped my path in following into bull riding and going down the way I have. In the younger years, we did a lot of shows, show jumping, riding junior bulls and steers and calves at that time.

Until I got to probably 12 or 14 and then realised maybe I could make something out of bull riding.

How did you know bucking bulls was your career choice?

It’s been a dream of mine for as long as I can remember. From throwing a leg over a bucket or a dog, whatever I could get on, I lived and breathed it younger, and still do. It’s very hard to get it out of your system when you’ve done it for so long.

It’s hard to be in a lot of sports and be successful, you’ve got to pick one and put 100% into that, and follow that dream. You can’t be playing football, riding horses and boxing, you really need to concentrate on one particular thing and perfect it. So bulls it was!

It has a bit more of an adrenaline rush than some other things, which has great appeal.

How did the career take off so young?

I left school Ayr State High School in year 10 and did a fitting and turning apprenticeship, but was headhunted by a college in the US to go over and ride bulls. Once I finished the training, I flew straight to the States, and that’s what lead to me spending 8 years there riding bulls.

I got a scholarship at Western Texas College in their rodeo program. Like basketball, football and baseball, because it’s so big there, they have the specific rodeo program.

Was the Texas rodeo scene much different from the Burdekin?

I was surrounded by a lot of Australians over there, everyone that grows up in the rodeo world dreams of going to the US to compete, rodeo in the US is like soccer in Europe to Australia.

There were about eight other Aussies at the college who were also headhunted. We didn’t pick up the accent because we were still around other Aussies all the time.

The “western” culture and lifestyle is a lot more accepted than walking up the street in Brisbane in a cowboy hat in boots, you get a lot of head turns, whereas it’s part of the parcel in the United States.

What’s involved with the physical side of bull riding?

Bullriding is 90% mental, you have to be mentally prepared for that danger and things that can go wrong. It’s really a man vs beast situation, you have to be agile and strong, but not too big and bulky.

Injuries come with the territory, you’ve gotta expect a few bumps along the way. Shoulder reconstructions, broken legs, 11 broken ribs, punctured both lungs, a facial reconstruction, three plates and 14 screws in my face, both wrists have pins in them from being broken, broken jaw, torn knees and muscles.

That’s where you have to be mentally tough, and it comes back to being passionate about it, you can’t just do it for a hobby.

How has the current COVID situation impacted events?

Things have been on hold because of COVID, but things are starting back up. Australia’s got a few events coming up, about eight or ten, leading up to the Townsville finals, which I’ve just launched, held in November. They have restricted crowds, but it can be watched live on RidePass.

What brings you back Ayr, even if you could live in the States?

It’s been a good little town to shape me, to be resilient and rugged enough to get through the tough times in the States.

There’s been plenty of times I’ve almost thrown the towel in, but growing up in a rural community gives you that toughness to stick in there. You never forget where it all started.

I fly back in from the States, and the plane lands in Townsville, and you know you’re home when that heat hits you, knowing your back in North Queensland. As well as keeping the family tradition going at the barbershop in Ayr, with my father when I’m not riding bulls.

Long-serving teacher farewelled Hayden Menso

STUDENTS and staff of Burdekin Christian College have bid farewell to a muchloved teacher moving into retirement.

Mrs Sandra Fowler, a teacher at the college since 2008, will be fondly remembered by many within the school community as a Primary Teacher, Special Needs Teacher and most recently, Senior School Maths and Science Teacher.

Always interested in innovative and new approaches to learning, Mrs Fowler was an integral part of introducing programs to increase literacy and numeracy outcomes for

students.

She was farewelled at a special morning tea, in a science-themed hall and presented with her personalised lab coat.

The principal of Burdekin Christian College, Debra Creed, said Mrs Fowler, will be missed within the school.

“Working with Mrs Fowler has been an immense pleasure for us all. Her professionalism, willingness to take on extra-curricular experiences for the students and her delight in the students’ achievements have made an enormous impact on staff, students and families.

“With Sandra goes an enormous bank of knowledge that won’t be easy to replace, and we will not forget her work here anytime soon.”

Her dedication has had a significant impact on the school’s community.

“Although we are sad to lose her services to our college, we are happy she is now finally getting a welldeserved chance to relax and fully enjoy life away from school. We thank Sandra for her tireless and selfless efforts, truly living out the college’s philosophy of care.”

Business boost for trades industry

New government subsidy to help pay employees GREATER support for businesses employing apprentices and trainees is now available through a new program from the Federal Government. The program will deliver $1.2 billion into Australia’s economy in support of trainee and apprentice employment.

A 50% wage subsidy for businesses which employ a new trainee or apprentice is available The program, announced ahead of the federal budget’s delivery on Tuesday, will form part of the government’s recession recovery from the COVID-19 pandemic.

It will support 100,000 jobs across the nation, available to businesses of any size, industry or location,

including those in the Burdekin.

Available now from Monday 5th October, the initiative is valid until 30th September 2021.

“During this pandemic the federal government has been focused on supporting and creating jobs as well as identifying the skills we need in the economic rebuild,” Prime Minister Scott Morrison said.

“Whether it’s the manufacturing, housing and construction, arts or mining sectors — this new wage subsidy gives businesses certainty to hire and provides a career path to aspiring, young tradies.”

It’s sure to be welcome support for local trades

businesses, with year 12 students seeking work on the horizon after completing school in coming weeks.

Apprenticeship provider MEGT welcomed the announcement, with general manager Paul Bennett saying more employers will be able to put on more workers.

“The supporting apprentices and trainee subsidy is helping employers to retain their current apprentices, but until now, there’s been limited support to encourage businesses to take on new apprentices,” Mr Bennett said.

“This initiative will go a long way towards ensuring new starter numbers climb in the right direction.”

FOURTEEN Burdekin Catholic High School (BCHS) students have started their chosen careers by participating in School-Based Apprenticeships (SBA).

SBA allows high school students, generally in Years 10, 11 or 12, to work for an employer and train towards

a recognised qualification, while completing their secondary schooling and studying for their Queensland Certificate of Education (QCE) and or Australian Tertiary Admission Rank (ATAR).

BCHS supports students in undertaking SBA. Local

businesses and multinational companies offer our students’ industry training and experience to give them the skills required in the world of work.

Reef project helps grazier gain control of rugged country NQ Dry Tropics NEW Moon Station grazier Cam Heading is working hard to wrest control of some rugged country that is part of his family’s 27,000ha property.

He wants to make that land a productive part of their business, but, with an eye on the long-term, he also wants to protect and nurture it.

Using fencing and new watering points, Mr Heading will be able to improve productivity, finish each wet season with more ground cover, and reduce erosion and subsequent sediment delivery to the Burdekin River and the Great Barrier Reef lagoon.

NQ Dry Tropics is helping him as part of its Reef Alliance Phase 3 grazing project funded by the partnership between the Australian Government’s Reef Trust and the Great Barrier Reef Foundation.

The Headings — Cam, wife Susan and children Lainee, Ivy and Ted — moved to New Moon from the family’s home property, Toomba Station on the basalt wall north of Charters Towers almost three years ago.

Having seen impressive results from a previous NQ Dry Tropics project installing whoa boys, and fencing existing water points, Mr Heading was keen to take advantage of the extension support offered by Senior Grazing Field Officer Chris Poole.

They aim to address some problem areas of degraded land at the same time getting some management control over grazing in some of the rugged areas of the property.

“Some of the country is almost inaccessible, but we’re fencing and building access roads and gradually getting in there,” Mr Heading said.

Dams are key to Mr Heading’s plan to get more control over pasture management.

“We have built more than 30 dams across the property and we’re still going,” he said.

Bullock Paddock, with an area of about 1600ha in the north end of New Moon, was watered by one dam, and when it dried up (usually by September each year), cattle watered on the stretch of the Burdekin River just inside the northern boundary of the paddock.

Running more than 200 cows and calves, the lack of watering points led to over-grazing along the frontage country leading away from the river… eventually resulting in areas of scalded land.

With the funding and extension support from NQ Dry Tropics, Mr Heading was able to build two new dams and fence the paddock in two.

Fences around each of the dams and the ability to spell the riparian frontage area during, and following the wet season will allow Mr Heading to improve ground cover and remediate the damaged area.

The potential for river bank damage from cattle hooves as they watered from the river would also be eliminated.

By installing four new dams in the 7000ha Down River Paddock on New Moon, Mr Heading will be able to spread grazing pressure more evenly around the paddock and use areas previously inaccessible because of a lack of water for the cattle.

Using exclusion fencing on each dam, he will be able to move the herd around the large area, almost as efficiently as if

it was fenced into paddocks, providing pasture near the dams time to recover after each graze.

A new road, incorporating erosion control banks or whoa boys, to access the new dams will be built using the Darryl Hill Soil Save methodology already proven elsewhere on the property.

as well as the extension of telehealth services for six months.

“More broadly, more support for mental health across the country is welcome but it will be important to ensure that rural areas get their fair share of the funding – which historically hasn’t been the case.

“Expanding access to psychological services under the Better Access scheme is a good step as well, but unless that’s coupled with measures to address workforce issues in rural areas then it won’t necessarily mean better access for people in these areas at all.

“It is disappointing that we didn’t see more investment in preventive health in this year’s budget. Spending money on preventive health is one of the best ways to improve health outcomes and saves money in the health budget overall.

“We are also disappointed that we haven’t seen a more permanent boost to JobSeeker. The old $40 a day rate of JobSeeker was too low and meant that too many people in rural areas were living in poverty and weren’t able to afford things like fresh food.

Now should have been the time for the Government to commit to a permanent increase.”

Federal Budget: Rural health support welcome, but more to be done THE peak body for rural health in Australia today welcomed the increased investment in health in the 2020-21 federal budget, but warned there was more to be done to ensure that people in rural, regional and remote Australia have the same health outcomes as their city counterparts.

“We’re pleased to see a number of targeted measures to improve rural health as part of the Stronger Rural Health Strategy,” said National Rural Health Alliance CEO Dr Gabrielle O’Kane.

“We welcome the expansion of Rural Health Multidisciplinary Training Program infrastructure, which will help more students train to be medical professionals in rural areas.

“The $3.3 million for new primary care models in New South Wales is also a good first step, but we want to see these place-based models rolled out in more rural areas across the country as well.

“The $125m program to improve access to clinical trials in rural areas looks promising and we look forward to finding out more detail from government about how this program will work.

“It’s also good to see funding confirmed for the extension and expansion of the office of the National Rural Health Commissioner,

Comments: The Burdekin mills processed just under 345,000 tonnes for the week.

The reduced throughput was due to an extended cleaning stop at Inkerman to repair a leaking boiler tube and an extended stop at Pioneer to clean the ID fan.

There was a scheduled stop at Invicta Mill to conduct a Bside clean.

This week both Pioneer and Kalamia mills passed the 1 million tonnes crushed milestone.

Average weekly CCS increased by just under half a unit to reach 15.77, which is above budget. Season to date CCS is now up to 14.33 units.

The highest CCS sample was 19.1 from a rake of Q240 second ratoon cane in the Invicta area.

Indigenous Tourism

New programs for the Gudjuda Reference Group put on hold as COVID hurts the tourism industry As tourism initiatives led by Indigenous people across Australia become more popular and create new revenues and opportunities in their communities, COVID restrictions make further setbacks.

Gudjuda Ranger Coordinator Eddie Smallwood thinks a lot of people are unaware of indigenous culture and history, whether its the Burdekin or Australia it’s about sharing knowledge.

The traditional smoking ceremony is an ancient custom that has cleansing properties for both you and the land and it can make a positive change to your future.

Gudjuda has been conducting turtle tagging and reporting for over 20 years including research into fibro papilloma across all Bowen Bays, north to Cape Upstart.

THE INDIGENOUS tourism industry has been growing across Australia, with more and more people seeking locally run cultural experiences that give insights into the Country’s rich and diverse Indigenous histories and celebrate its First Nations people.

Named the Year of Indigenous Tourism, with new funding programs designed to support businesses and boost Indigenous tourism initiatives, the government has extended programs into 2021 due to the immense impacts of COVID 19 across the Country.

The Queensland government has created a fund of $10 million, to help build and support Indigenous tourism operators across regional Queensland, to promote the industry for the future and provide economic opportunities within communities.

But Eddie Smallwood, elder and chairperson of the Gudjuda Reference Group, says that while programs aiming to provide government funding are good in theory, securing those funds is a complicated process.

“The biggest problem with government funding is they only have a certain amount of money, and there are so many people who couldn’t apply for it.

“If you haven’t got a good submission writer, you more or less have no chance of getting the tender you’re putting in for.”

He shares that COVID restrictions have put many of the organisation’s projects on hold, with hopes of expanding the group’s cultural tours and turtle conservation programs postponed.

The group works across several small businesses and with six Traditional Owner groups with native title throughout Gudjuda country, the money from the tour groups helps to support their other programs that focus on supporting local rangers and creating employment opportunities.

“With our ranger program, we do a lot of looking after Country, and we do a lot of weed control, fencing and fires, we work with Parks and Wildlife and do fire burns.

“We also go down to the Jiru walkways and clear up around Plantation Park. We do cleanups around the Burdekin, and we do beach cleanups. Last weekend we worked down with the community down at Alva Beach.

“If we get tourism up, we get more jobs for people, and there are more ranger positions available. That’s why we’re looking at the tourism side of it to build up the ranger program.”

Eddie hoped to be expanding their turtle tagging and research programs this year, inviting tourists to be a part of the data collection and research process and creating more revenue for environmental and conservation projects.

“We’ve released 2000 to 3000 turtles, and we’ve been doing that for many years. It’s really good for us. It’s about our cultural side of it but also the scientific side.

“With the COVID, you’re only allowed so many in the vessels so we haven’t gone out in a while. COVID has sort of locked us back for tourism, and we haven’t had the opportunity to go out and do that yet.”

Their cultural tours which involve the sharing of local history have also been knocked back with the lack of travellers.

“We do tours around Townsville for rock art and spear throwing, boomerang throwing and fire-making. I do tours at Plantation Park which are Bush Tukka tours and also the burial sites storytelling,” says Eddie.

“So that has a big impact on us at the moment. For it to be sustainable, we have to have more than 10 people for us to do tours.

With the lack of international travellers, Eddie says that the group will focus on attracting more domestic visitors. He believes that cultural and tourism programs led by Aboriginal people can provide a valuable platform for education.

“I think a lot of people are unaware of indigenous culture and history, whether its the Burdekin or Australia, but it’s about us sharing some of our knowledge. We don’t know everything, we know what we’ve been told from our elders and that’s been passed down to us, we keep that as ongoing storytelling.

“I think it’s about sharing the land. It’s everyone that’s got to be doing stuff for the community, and I think in the long run it’s about trying to educate people to look after Country, land and sea.”

Annual Fishing Classic weigh-in at Giru’s International Hotel Marina Trajkovich THE Giru International Hotel’s annual Fishing Classic was held over the October long weekend, with competitors looking to take home prizes for the heaviest fish and mud crab across different categories.

After a weekend on the water, both juniors and seniors brought their catches to the Giru Pub to be weighed with winners announced.

“The weigh-in commenced from midday on Sunday with some nice muddies and a good variety of fish,” says Rosalie Hardy, the owner of the Giru International Hotel.

She says that the annual competition is a great opportunity for families to get out and enjoy the water over the long weekend with

the weigh-in at the pub celebrating everyone’s catches.

Kevin Burgess was the winner of the seniors barramundi competition with a 2.69 kg fish with Rodney Boodles Jackson bringing in the heaviest mud crab.

Junior standouts were Nate Staines with his 1.12 kg flathead, Elliarna Thorne with a 700g Grunter and Emma Hervey winning the junior salmon division. Jack Hervey caught the biggest mud crab at 0.85kgs.

The Don West Ayr Ladies Golf Open had its biggest annual tournament over the long weekend, seeing 120 participants from all over North Queensland compete at the Ayr Golf Club.

Friday Veterans Like last week we had many count backs required. In the ladies, Winsome Threlfall was a clear winner with twenty points, second was Mavis Carvolth on seventeen points, and three players on sixteen points - Loretta Mauro third Mavis Zanetti fourth and Cecily Lena fifth. In the men’s event, again two players finished on sixteen points and after a count back, Les Shoobert first and Peter Saxby second, Gerald Henaway on fifteen points third, fourth was Les Andresen and John Wouters (from Sarina) fifth.

Brandon Bowls

On Friday night there were two triples games. The trio of Merv Wilshere, Norm Storrie and Joy Woods combined in the common purpose of dashing any hopes that Lyn Storrie, Ross McLaughlin and Bev Coonan had of winning a game of bowls. However, they made sure it was an enjoyable night socially. In the other game Margaret McLaughlin, Wayne Coonan, and Ray Panecassio met the challenge of facing P Kiehne, Doug Kiehne and Joe Yipanazar with a determined effort. The two teams finished with eight end wins a piece, but when Joe’s team won an end it was by a big margin, resulting in Joe’s team finishing victorious. Bowls will be on again this Friday with names in by 6:00pm for a 6:30pm start.

On Sunday, a “B” Pairs competition match was contested between the duo of Con Sexton and Jamie Woods and the duo of Doug Kiehne and Leo Kenny. This game went down to the wire with Jamie and Con leading by one point going into the final end, only for Doug and Leo to get the required two shots on the last end to take out the match.

In the social triples contests the trio of Merv Wilshere, Doug Robins and Richard Mau defeated the tenacious trio of Nev Dickinson, Wayne Coonan and Henry Hazel. Henry’s team won the most end but Richies’ team took out the match due to the fact, that when they won an end it was by a big margin.

In the other triples contest Mick McCloskey, Rob Garner and

Alan Garioch combined to put in an exhibition of tight consistent bowling to defeat the erratic but at times brilliant, trio of Dave Sheehan, Gary Nosworthy, and Joe Yipanazar.

Next Sunday, there will be another opportunity for people to improve their mental health by getting out and socially interacting in a healthy manner by enjoying a game of bowls with a diverse range of characters at Brandon. On Thursday we witnessed some very competitive bowling.

It is amazing how some top competition brings out the best in all players.

Former local inducted in Swimming Hall Of Fame Hayden Menso A PAST Burdekin resident has been awarded a place in swimming history, after years of running laps around other competitors.

Josh Santacaterina was recently inducted into the Australian Marathon Swimming Hall of Fame.

Leaving Home Hill at just 15 years old, Josh moved to Nudgee College in Brisbane to further his swimming career.

It was a move which has certainly paid off.

Josh was crowned a world champion open water swimmer after winning the 25km men’s event at the

2006 Open Water World Championships in Italy.

Josh has represented Australia many times in Open Water and Marathon championship events between 2000 and 2008.

A well-travelled swimmer, the sport has taken him locally from Townsville to Magnetic Island, to the far reaches of Egypt, Portugal and Hong Kong.

He gained overseas success with top three finishes in Swim Across the Sound in 2001, Egypt in 2003, Hong Kong in 2004 and Portugal in 2007.

At home in the south-east,

Josh has participated with other swimmers to set the 100x400 Free Relay world record.

His photo sits proudly on the wall at the Chandler Swimming Complex in Brisbane, with the likes of Susie O’Neil and Hayley Lewis, and others.

Community sports club appeal for support David Jackson USE IT OR LOSE IT! - That is the message from the members of the Home Hill Community Sports Club as they encourage local residents to make use of the facilities at what was formerly the Home Hill Bowling Club.

Sports Club President Les Oats said they wanted the community to start using the club and its facilities “or we will lose it”.

The club offers a bowling green for exponents of the sport, with competitions on Thursday and Sunday afternoons, while five-a-side soccer is also played on the green by players wearing flatsoled shoes.

For those wishing to play friendly bowls competitions, names should be in by 1pm for a 1.30pm start to the bowls competitions, while bowls games can also be arranged on Tuesday nights and soccer on Wednesday nights by arrangement with the club by phoning 0419 143 471.

The soccer games have proved popular with backpackers from the nearby facilities as well as those who come over to Home Hill from their Ayr accommodation.

The club has resurrected a link with the past through the efforts of their caretaker, Russell Tyson who devoted a great deal of time and elbow grease to cleaning up the bell that has been in place on the wall of the bar and which calls members to the start and finish of games.

The gold bell had developed a distinct black colour until Russell put his efforts to work and cleaned it up to reveal an inscription which provided a history advising that it had been donated by a long-time stalwart of the Home Hill Bowling Club.

The inscription read – “Presented to the Home Hill Bowling Club by Past President and Life Member, Duncan McDonald 1978.”

Duncan and his brother, Rod McDonald had both been popular members of the Bowling Club for many years, while their sister, Freda passed away not long ago after reaching her 100th birthday.

The Community Club has also become a popular venue for local women, who have met at the club for craft activities, while low impact exercise classes are also held there. Anyone interested in gaining more information should phone the club.

That also applies to any organisation wishing to use the club’s facilities for meetings, which are available free of charge as a meeting place.

“They are here for the community to use,” Mr Oats commented. “Meals can also be arranged by pre-booking with the club and local residents can become a lifetime member of the club for a $10 fee.”

Football Matters Cyclops

The Burdekin Panthers had eight matches scheduled over the long weekend winning five and losing three. The Junior competitions resumed after the school holiday break.

On Friday night at International Park the Youth team beat Ross River 3-1 and the Women Reserves won 3-2 against SES. In Townsville however it was a different story. Against Olympic the Premiers lost 0-2, the Reserves went down 0-4, and the Women Premiers forfeited. However the Youth team beat SES 8-0.

On Sunday the Funkies thumped Ingham 8- in Townsville, and at home the Youth team beat Olympic Maroon 2-0.

In the Juniors the U13s won 4-0 against SES, but the U15s lost 1-2 to SES.

OLYMPIC STRIKES The Kalamia Hotel Premiers travelled to Burt St keen to get a result against a strong Olympic side. In a scoreless first half it was an even match with the Panthers creating a few decent chances but unable to capitalise. In the second half the Panthers looked good at first however after twenty minutes an error at the back let in Olympic for the opening goal and also a Red Card for Mark Grasso, which left the team in a tough spot. The Panthers continued to work hard however Olympic used the extra man to their advantage and scored a second goal fifteen minutes from time to win 2-0.

RESERVES STILL SECOND The Burdekin Tyre Service Reserves remain in second place after losing their first game of the season to Olympic 4-0. A penalty to Olympic in the first half was all that separated the teams at half time. The Panthers scored a disallowed a goal early in the second half and soon after Olympic increased their lead and went on to

secure a sound 4-0 win. Burdekin can still end the season as minor premiers by winning this weekend’s game against WSC and their game in hand against Ingham.

FUNKIES WIN BIG The Austral Masonry Funkies played Ross River at home on Friday night. The game started at a fast pace and Burdekin did well not to concede early, after Ross River had a number of chances.

Midway through the first half Ross River took the lead but Burdekin responded well to score an equaliser minutes later from Luke Cathcart.

The teams went to the break at 1-1. Burdekin came out the stronger team in the second half and took the lead after only a handful of minutes when Adam Mottin made a darting run up the right wing before crossing the ball to Tarryn Smith who slotted it past the Ross River keeper.

With 10 minutes to go Burdekin made the game safe after Tarryn Smith scored his second from the penalty spot. A good win for the Funkies who had not enjoyed a victory over Ross River in the last three years. The win keeps Burdekin in first spot on the ladder.

The Funkies travelled to Townsville to play Ingham on Sunday their second game in three days. Burdekin started strongly scoring after only 1 minute through Tarryn Smith and the Funkies scored at regular intervals throughout the first half to go into the halftime break up 6-0.

The 3.00 pm start time started to take an effect in the second half and Burdekin only managed another 2 goals. Ingham also got onto the score sheet with the last kick of the game. Final score of 8-1 to Burdekin keeps them in top spot however most other teams have a game in hand.

WOMEN SCORE The Reserve Women defeated Saints 3-2 on Friday night. Charlotte Dal Santo opened the scoring in the 3rd minute before Saints replied quickly scoring in the 9th minute. Logan Roncato then scored midway in the half giving Burdekin a 2-1 lead at half time. The second half saw Bianca Pontarelli fouled resulting in a penalty for Burdekin, Sian Reardon scored to make it a 3-1 lead. Burdekin’s defence was looking strong until conceding a penalty late in the game, however keeper Angela Cabassi made a great save to keep the score at 3-1. Saints did get a goal just before full time but the ladies managed to hang on for a 3-2 win and remain in 4th position.

YOUNG GUNS The Young Panthers were up against SES in Townsville on Friday night. The youngsters were far too good for SES winning 8-0, after being 6-0 up at half time. Top goal scorer was Ben Ruskin with a hat trick and other goal scorers were Matt Walker, Julen Arrate, Jack Gimson, Riley Christensen and Keanu Morello.

On Sunday afternoon the Youth team took on leaders Olympic Maroon at home. In a very good display the youngsters won 2-0 after leading 1-0 at half time. Riley Christensen gave the Panther a fourth minute lead and Dylan Meinicke secured the game with a late goal from the penalty spot.

This was an excellent result and depending on results the Youths can finish second and have their sights set on winning the grand final!!

The Under 13s won 4-0 against SES Vixens after

being two goals up at the break. Goal scorers were Mason Kiehne, Charlie Predabon, Matteo Felesina and Kya Quagliata.

The Under 15s, away to SES lost their first match of the season going down 1-2. Blake Walker put the Panthers ahead in the first half but SES equalised before half time and added a second goal late in the game. The Under15s are minor premiers.

The Grand Finals will be held on Friday 11 December The Masters Annual Charity Match between Blue Balls and Rainbows is on this Friday 9 October hopefully with a large roll up of players and spectators. It is all in a very good cause.

It was a huge succeess with 104 riders on over 160 bikes revving it up at the 2020 Queensland Titles

THE QUEENSLAND 2020 Dirt Track Titles held this year at the Brandon race track was a roaring success with contenders and supporters all congratulating the smooth running of the event in spite of some very windy and hot conditions on the track.

Australian dirt track champion Jarred Brook put on a good show competing

against our local guys with 104 riders in total attending the two day event.

Ayr local Jared Poletti won two Queensland titles over the weekend and Jacob Samwell picked up a third placing in one of his events, with all contenders putting in an incredible effort for the championship.
