Community personality celebrates milestones

Paula Dowson shares her experience in business and life so far Hayden Menso A STALWART of the Burdekin community known to many as a kind and compassionate businesswoman is celebrating her 70th birthday and 53 years in the hairdressing industry.

Paula Dowson, owner of Paula’s Place hair salon on Queen Street in Ayr, will turn 70 on Sunday, November 1st, and isn’t looking back.

From starting as a beauty and hair student at just seventeen, Paula quickly found her place in the industry, a position she has

found great success through years of hard work and dedication to her customers.

Beginning work at Gavina’s hair salon with then-owner Lyn Fleming, Paula’s early days were important in building her hairdressing foundation.

“I applied for the job, and there were 40 other girls. I was lucky that I got that job,” Paula said.

“She [Lyn] probably taught me everything that I know. I went home, crying six nights out of seven. I used to get whacked over the knuckles, it wouldn’t happen today.”

After a while the salon was up for sale, and not wanting to lose her work so far, Paula’s parents helped her open her first salon.

“It’s the end one in the East Ayr shops. Kenny Gilbert had it for years after. That was my first salon. I would have only been eighteen or so.”

From that humble beginning, Paula briefly acquired another salon where Target now is in Queen Street.

“In the end, I closed the East Ayr salon after ten years and just concentrated on the town salon. I was there for about another ten years,” she said.

“I often feel really funny going through the door of

Target, cause that’s where my salon was right there.”

Her renowned salon is now located at her home, which she made to be closer to family and have easier access to her work.

“It was so I could come home, slow down my life, and be at home for the kids.

That was the idea of the home salon,” Paula said.

Her salon is a true representation of her, full of charm and character with the customer in mind.

She still performs cuts and styles, showing that her age is not a limit.

“As you know, I’m turning 70 on Sunday. It just sounds like a dirty number to me!”

Despite closing for a month during the outbreak of the pandemic, Paula is a positive person and doesn’t let the state of things get her down.

“I am the most positive person that I know myself.

Every day you get up, it’s a good day because it’s another day you can change your life for the better; I have hope for what’s going on,” she said.

However, today’s business is a culmination of many years’ work and sharing her craft with many apprentices in our community.

“I’ve been lucky in the years I’ve worked. I’ve had

some really very talented girls work for me. Your name and your business is really only as good as your employees, and I’ve had some wonderful ones.”

Paula bases her work around a mantra, to which she attributes her success; passion, pride and purpose.

It keeps her customers in the spotlight, whether they can’t use anybody else’s services or need someone to talk to during the appointment.

With many stories to share, Paula believes sharing her work and herself throughout our community is wealth in itself.

“I get a lot of gratification

out of it,” she said. “It’s all true, and if it’s not all true at once, it’s true through your career and your life and family. Each and every little bit.”

Paula works with her daughter-in-law, Lara Dowson, who reaffirmed Paula’s community spirit and hair-craft expertise.

“She is the best I could have learned from. She’s very fair and isn’t like other bosses.

Paula will push you to do your best; people say they can tell a ‘Paula haircut,’” Lara said.

“She never says no to anyone and will do anything for anybody,” Lara says.

“She’s a very, very caring person and one of a kind. Our

community is fortunate to have had such a great teacher, hairdresser, and woman like her,” Lara said.

One of Paula’s apprentices Jay Horan said she was an amazing lady to learn from.

“She’s been in our game the longest out of anyone in town. Her imagination is phenominal.”

Jay was offered an apprenticeship with Paula in 1993, and although she didn’t want to be a hairdresser originally, she’s not looked back since.

“One of Paula’s quotes still sticks with me today: ‘Don’t put off until tomorrrow what you can achieve today. Happy Birthday, Paula!”

All book-ed up

Local author delights children at Book Week event in Plantation Park Marina Trajkovich FOR BOOK Week 2020, kids got to dress up and come to Plantation Park to enjoy a reading with the Burdekin’s own children’s author, Tania Cox. Tania has been writing children’s books for over 20 years and was joined on the day by the characters of her picture book, Millie’s Special Something.

Elli Boatfield from Eleven Body + Mind gave a quick children’s yoga session before the kids and toddlers settled in with their parents to listen to Tania’s story.

Tania Cox grew up on a farm in Ayr, always absorbed in books, she says that her father was a particularly talented and theatrical story teller as she was growing up.

At the age of eleven, when asked to create a picture book for her primary school class, she discovered a path she would later pursue for years to come.

“My teacher had a children’s book published when I was in Year 6. As part of our assessment, we had to write a children’s book and I’ve been hooked ever since.

“Having a teacher who was an author cemented in my mind back then that it could be achieved.”

The inspiration for the titular character Millie in Millie’s Special Something, came to Tania when illustrator and artist David Miller showed her his creation of a feather tailed Dinosaur, inspired by a

paleontologic discovery made in China.

David had illustrated one of her children’s books in the past, specialising in beautiful and unique characters sculpted intricately with coloured paper, scanned and then captured in children’s stories.

“The story’s message promotes believing in yourself and that everyone has their own ‘special something,” she says.

Growing Update: Alva Beach Inquest Pains: Council Forum addresses fruit picker shortage Marina Trajkovich

THE ALVA Beach Inquest investigating the fatal stabbing of Thomas Davy, 27, and Corey Christensen, 37 commenced this month in Cairns before Deputy State Coroner Jane Bentley.

A key focus of the inquest has been gathering more evidence into the events of October 1st 2018, where Dean Webber stabbed two men after they broke into his beach home in

Growers and stakeholders recently gathered at the Burdekin Theatre, Ayr to discuss the severe lack of seasonal workers on Burdekin farms.

Marina Trajkovich THE Burdekin Shire Council in collaboration with the Bowen Gumlu Growers Association held a forum on Monday the 26th October to discuss the lack of seasonal workers on our farms and the impact it’s having on growers.

Border closures and a lack of backpackers and travellers is putting immense stress on farms severely lacking in staff to pick the fruit, an issue set to get worse next year without action.

Hostel owners who provide employment services for backpackers and farm owners concerned at the prospect of losing their crop deliberated on their immediate concerns and their fears for the future.

Concerns were raised about the lack of pickers, with attendees discussing potential and existing proposals to encourage workers to join their farms.

The #pickQLD social media campaign, encouraging young people to take up farming jobs was discussed as well as the Harvest Trail service, a government recruitment program connecting potential pickers with farmers.

Attendees were in support of government schemes like the Pacific Labour Scheme and Seasonal Worker Program, that encourages workers from neighbouring Pacific Islander countries to come work on farms in Australia.

However, the issue with bringing in foreign workers and more backpackers remains; with quarantining facilities and strict border measures still in place, significantly restricting travel.

“There are a number of initiatives being developed by the State and Federal Governments and Council would like to support these as well as consider any additional support needed,” says Burdekin Shire Council Mayor Lyn McLaughlin.

“I want to encourage anyone who may be looking for work including university and school students who are looking for extra money over their Christmas break to consider spending a few months picking the Burdekin.”

Prior to the incident, Mr Webber had been asleep when Candice Locke, known to both Mr Davy and Mr Christensen, came to his home, seeking help and refuge shortly before midnight, after being injured.

No charges were laid against Mr Webber as the stabbing was considered to be in self defence by police, however the inquiry seeks to demystify some of the

events of the night and revisit the actions of law enforcement involved.

Candice Locke and Dean Webber are both key witnesses in the inquest.

However Mr Webber’s lawyer has requested that his client not be made to give evidence on the grounds of psychological trauma and severe PTSD. This request was denied by Coroner Bentley on the grounds

of public interest.

It was decided that Mr Webber will be allowed to answer questions in writing rather than before the court in consideration of his welfare.

The inquiry is set to run into November and Burdekin Local News will be covering any future updates.

Supporting Queensland Jobs Under our COVID-19 response the Morrison Government has provided $10.7 billion in JobKeeper payments saving thousands of Queensland jobs.

The Australian economy is now fighting back. Our plan to grow the economy and create jobs includes: The JobMaker Hiring Credit that will provide an incentive of up to $200 a week for employers to hire new workers aged 16-35; supporting around 450,000 jobs for young people.

Establishing the $1 billion JobTrainer fund to create free and low-cost training places for school leavers and job seekers.

100,000 new apprenticeships and traineeships, with a 50 per cent wage subsidy for businesses who employ them.

Lower Taxes for Households and Businesses Queenslanders will have more of their own money to spend on what matters to them, generating billions of dollars of economic activity and creating new jobs.

Putting more money into the pockets of Australian households, with a tax cut backdated to 1 July 2020 benefitting 2.3 million Queenslanders.

Lower and middle income earners will this year receive tax relief of up to $2,745 for singles, and up to $5,490 for dual income families compared with 2017-18.

Thousands of Queensland businesses will be eligible for business tax incentives, helping 99% of businesses to immediately deduct the full cost of eligible assets.

Supporting Regional Recovery Local Roads and Community Infrastructure Program – $1,479,882 direct to Burdekin Shire Council for roads, bridges and community infrastructure.

Bruce Highway Upgrade Strategy – $20 million to determine four-laning the Bruce Highway strategy.

Priority Road and Rail Projects – $64.7 million for the Burdekin Bridge rehabilitation project.

Haughton River Bridge Upgrade – $514 million project underway.

Earlier this year my son had a horrific break in his arm at school during a soccer game and Hayley stayed with him the whole time, from going in the ambulance with him to

Golf Classic to celebrate end of the crushing Marina Trajkovich

THE END of Harvest Golf Classic is back in the Burdekin to celebrate another end to the sugar cane crushing season, drawing teams in the community for an Ambrose day that raises money for charity.

The event has been running in Ayr for the last 20 years with the support of Wilmar Sugar and has this year attracted major sponsorship from Bray Valves and Controls, and Laser Electrical as well as a host of other local sponsors who have generously come on board for the event.

Ayr Camping World and Michael’s Menswear are also sponsoring the event.

Kelsey Shand from Wilmar Sugar has been a part of running the event for the last three years.

She says that the Ambrose event is a great day for the community to come together.

“It’s a good, fun, team

event that everyone in the community can come to,” she says.

“It was just a way to celebrate the end of the crushing with the town. We thought now that we’re here we can raise money for a charity and we always choose a local charity.”

“Everything goes back into the community.”

This year the Golf Classic is supporting CORES, an organisation that works to prevent suicide in the region through community programs that provide valuable support to those who need it.

Gary Bohl is an employee with Wilmar but also works with Ross Romeo, the head coordinator of CORES in the Burdekin.

He says that the valuable work of volunteers and generous donations given by the community are a big part of the organisation’s work and

Marie Montafia – Milliner Local milliner Marie Montafia has been creating millinery pieces since Spring 2014 and is glad to be letting her creativity flow again.

Holding a passion for design from a young age, Marie took her hobby to the next level with her business MMM Designs Millinery.

“I’ve always loved creating; I’d design and sew my own clothes at a school age. I love design and being creative, and it was fashion design that got me in,” Marie said.

From creating clothing to coming up with dance costumes, Marie’s design journey has lead to creating millinery and racing

creating custom pieces for locals and race-goers alike all over the country.

“By 2015, it snowballed, and it was just social media.

By 2016 I was running on orders with people from all around the country,” Marie said.

In 2017, Marie took the step to broaden her creative horizons and take on racewear of all-seasons.

“That’s when I changed my direction a little bit because our local race day is in May. Racing fashion all goes by seasons; when it comes to the fashions on the field, you’ve got to dress appropriately for the season. Not only do

In a change of pace, 2020 has been far-removed from a traditional racing year, not just for racers and spectators.

“This year’s been rather different because although there’s been racing, most of it has been without spectators, or very limited.

So for me living here in North Queensland, as far as

millinery goes, it just died off,” Marie said.

The impacts of COVID-19 on the racing industry has seen galloping occur behind closed gates, not letting milliners showcase their pieces.

“Leading up to Melbourne Cup and our local Grower’s Race Day in May, it’s just crazy. Working until all hours of the night, seven days a week. It does get pretty

consuming at times, so it’s been good to have a bit of a break.”

As a local millinery creative, Derby Day has been a welcome return to the art.

“I’ve got a few orders that I’m doing for ladies. It’s been good fun doing it,” Marie says.

“I do rely a lot on custom orders, so they’re ladies who come to me and say, ‘this is my dress, what can we do?’

They have a budget to work

with, and you try to meet the brief. The more creative freedom they give you, the more I enjoy it.

“Most milliners would agree with that,” Marie said.

Getting back to handcrafting headwear has been a highlight for the year.

“It’s been good in that I’ve been able to get my hand back into it this year.”

Galloping for a win in Home Hill Hayden Menso AFTER months of uncertainty and patron-free race meets, Home Hill is ready to giddy up with the Burdekin Race Club hosting Scotty’s Memorial Derby Day, this Saturday October 31st.

Not only will the day hold qualifying races, but there will also be the long-awaited return of Fashions on the Field for the first time this year.

The day will be an opportunity for fashionistas, punters, horse owners, and trainers to all let their hair down and enjoy a return to the track.

For the race club, the sellout event will bring some light to a tough year. “[One] feature race will be the Justin Scott memorial, that will be held over 1,830 metres. It’s another good feature because they go past

the crowd twice,” Burdekin Race Club president Ricky Gudge said.

“The day is sponsored

by Truenorth Interiors and Justin’s family, who’ve put a lot of time and effort into it. So hopefully the day runs really well for everyone.”

Although some recent race meets held at the club have had limited spectators, this weekend will be a premier event in the absence of the Burdekin Grower Race Day this year.

“It will be a good crowd that will fit well with our COVID restrictions,” Mr. Gudge said.

The event will attract racers from across the north, including two local horses making their on-track debut on Saturday, Keighley Sun and Rebel Lake.

has been holding meets scheduled for other clubs, one of the positive side effects of COVID restrictions.

“We were approached by racing Queensland to take

on a fair few unscheduled meetings, as we only get five scheduled meetings a year. We took on one each month, and the first one was patron-free. We’ve

got another unscheduled meeting on November 14th, it was supposed to be Ingham’s meeting, but they have problems with their track.

So we’re going to take their

meeting on here,” Mr. Gudge said.

The event is set to be one for all to enjoy, both on and off the track.

Eating Up for a good cause Program to benefit local school students hayden.menso@burdekinlocal.com.au ENSURING our school students don’t go hungry is top of mind in a partnership between charity Eat Up and Wilmar.

On Friday, 23rd October, a team of Wilmar Sugar employees from the Burdekin and Townsville donated their time and labour, making more than 700 sandwiches to be shared across seven local schools.

Schools will freeze the individually-wrapped cheese sandwiches, to have them available to toast and give to children they identify as coming to school hungry and

without lunch.

According to Foodbank Australia, one in eight Australian kids arrives at school hungry every day, directly affecting their ability to concentrate, engage, and enjoy school.

Wilmar Sugar Purchasing/ Supply Manager Vaughan Jones said it was a great initiative for all involved.

“Everyone got stuck in and did their bit, and we had all of the sandwiches made, wrapped and loaded within just over an hour. It was a really great team-building activity.”

Osborne celebrates book week wonder WITH last week being National Book Week, local schools highlighted the benefits and fun of involved with reading.

This year’s theme was “Curious Creatures, Wild Minds,” and gave students a perfect chance to come together and engage with literary works.

Cha-ching for Achacha farmers as fruit gains popularity An obscure South American fruit is setting an example in organic agriculture in the Burdekin.

We talk to Helen Hill from Giru about starting the world’s first Achacha farm.

HELEN and Bruce Hill knew nothing about farming when they packed up their lives in Sydney to grow their business in Giru; the world’s first commercial farm growing the achacha.

Previously grown exclusively in the backyards of local families in the Amazon basin of Bolivia, the tangy but sweet, tropical fruit has become popular in Australia and other parts of the world.

Helen has a masters degree in South American art and was a visual artist in Sydney and her husband, Bruce Hill was a business lecturer at the Australian National University (ANU) before the pair transitioned to Giru and took the plunge into organic agriculture.

They are incredibly grateful to Burdekin local, Ross Oliveri who ran the farm in the early days, getting the pair off the ground.

“We weren’t involved in growing anything and we couldn’t copy others as we were the first group in the world to grow the fruit commercially. It’s started here!” says Helen Hill.

“There are many people who really like it. Because it’s low sugar, but gives a sweet sensation, it is popular with diabetics.”

The couple lived in Uruguay for five years,

without ever hearing of the achacha fruit, becoming aware of the product through the South American business community in Sydney.

“You have to learn from knowing nothing and so there was a lot of reading to do, a lot of workshops to attend, it was like doing another degree really. Now it’s much easier but we never stop learning,” says Helen.

“I was interested in doing biodynamics because I had learnt that the best tasting food is biodynamic and the most nutritious is biodynamic so that’s the way we’ve gone.”

Fast forward nine years and the world’s first achacha farm is thriving in the Burdekin, becoming more popular as people become more aware of the sweet and tangy, tropical fruit.

Although they mainly supply grocery stores in Australia they have also seen success overseas supplying to retail giant, Marks and Spencer in London.

“The most difficult thing was marketing a fruit that nobody knew,” she says.

Farmers in South America have followed suit and are now farming achacha at a greater scale after seeing its success here.

“They’ve taken more interest in it now that we’re growing it commercially,” says Helen.

She says that it’s great to see a growing diversity and innovation in Australia’s food production and agriculture industries.

“There’s always a safety margin in having diversity.

There are definitely new things starting up which I think is very healthy.”

Research reveals 2 in 3 Aussies ignorant of basic sun smart practices With outdoor recreation and drinking going hand in hand during Australian summers, 18 per cent of 30-somethings don’t realise this combination is damaging to their skin, compared with just 10 per cent of over 50s. Research suggests that alcohol increases the skin’s sensitivity to the sun.

Thirteen (13) per cent of respondents in their 30s incorrectly believe they don’t need to reapply sunscreen after they’ve applied it once.

The survey also asked respondents about how they dealt with sunburn. Of concern, just 10 per cent stay out of the sun in the days to follow.

When respondents were asked what remedy they use the most for sunburns, 50 percent use aloe vera gel or moisturisers.

Just 12 per cent drink more water to rehydrate.

Teri Lichtenstein, consulting dietitian at Entity Health, says: “It’s concerning to see the significant number of Aussies who aren’t aware of factors that cause damage to their skin, particularly as we are at the time of year where being outdoors is at its highest. Many forms of skin damage and cancer are preventable, but it comes down to being aware of what is harmful to the skin.”

“While aloe vera has long been the go-to remedy for sunburn, it was interesting to learn that just 3 per cent of respondents have used supplements that may help to repair and regenerate their skin following a sunburn. There are supplements people can take that can support skin healing and regeneration, such as a supplement containing nicotinamide as its key ingredient, a form of vitamin B3 that helps to replenish cellular energy to enable faster and more efficient DNA repair.”

DESPITE the plentiful campaigns around sun safety – such as the famous ‘slip slop slap’ now expanded to include ‘seek (shade) and slide’ – new research has revealed that the messages might not be getting through to a significant minority of Aussies, who don’t always know fact from fiction when it comes to sun protection.

Entity Health, a line of Australian-made natural health supplements that address specific health and skin conditions at a cellular level, commissioned an independent, nationally-representative survey of 1,008 Australians.

Presenting respondents with 10 false statements about sun, health and skin health, the survey asked them which they think to be true.

One third of respondents think wearing SPF 50+ sunscreen means you can stay in the sun longer than if you are wearing SPF 30+ sunscreen.

However, there is only a marginal difference between the two – SPF 30 filters about 96.7 per cent of UV radiation, while SPF 50 filters 98 per cent.

A quarter of those in their 30s also don’t realise that sitting in the sun without sunscreen for 30 minutes is harmful to their skin.

While sunburn isn’t always instantly felt, signs can develop in as little as 15 minutes – such as skin being warm or hot to touch, and feeling thirsty – with skin turning red within hours of being burnt.

Nearly one in four 18-39-year olds incorrectly think being outdoors without sunscreen on an overcast day is not damaging to their skin.

However, 68 per cent of over-40s know this can damage skin, as UV radiation – not sunlight – is what causes sunburn and can remain high even on cool or cloudy days.

Men’s Shed powers up the goods Hayden Menso

BUILDING a community for our older men is what the Burdekin Men’s Shed is all about.

The shed is a place for men to come together and work on building projects, gardening, and socialise in a tailored environment.

The association has recently received a generous

donation which will help them in their weekly endeavours.

Receiving over $3,000 in sponsorship from Redpath Australia Pty Ltd, the group is now laying hands on some brand new power tools from local business Burdekin Powersports.

President Rob Ritchie said the opportunity to receive the equipment was muchwelcomed.

“Fundraising with the present coronavirus restrictions has proved very difficult, and this sponsorship and support from Redpath is greatly appreciated by the shed members.”

The group now has a new leaf blower, high-pressure cleaner, whipper snipper and pole trimmer, all of which are battery-operated and cordless for improved safety.

Supporting local, the Men’s Shed purchased the equipment from Burdekin Powersports.

“The dealer has put

together a great deal for the purchase of the very safe, high-quality Stihl products,” the group said.

Alex Wheeler, Redpath Australia Project Manager, said it was a perfect opportunity for the organisation to give back to the community.

“We’ve been in the

region for 16 months, with 50 per cent local workers.

We are always looking for opportunities to give back to the local Burdekin community,” he said.

The men will use the new equipment for garden maintenance and improvements around their complex.

Jeffrey Lunn says he’s proud of what he’s able to offer the community and enjoys seeing everyone getting involved.

“It just seems to get bigger and bigger every year. There’s always something new,” he says.

This year, they’re hoping their Halloween party on the 31st October will be as big as ever as people and families in the Burdekin get a chance to celebrate after a long period of restrictions.

Despite the large numbers the pair attract to their home, Jeffrey Lunn assures the party will still take into account social distancing and other precautions like hand sanitiser and face masks for

those who want them.

“With COVID there’s been nothing on so they’re thinking ‘we can finally get out and do something’ .”

“This year for Halloween, there will be lights. We do fairy floss, popcorn and snow cones. Last year we had 250 people and this year I think it’s gonna be bigger,” he says.

The Home Hill Lions Club will be in charge of the sausage sizzle this year and donations are welcome from attendees, with Jeffrey and Leon collecting money to support local groups and organisations.

“Whatever we make goes somewhere local, this year it’ll probably be the high school.”

The Conversation Breast Cancer Awareness Month Celebrity chef, Shannon Martinez is determined not to let her breast cancer diagnosis defeat her, battling through treatment amidst Melbourne’s lockdowns. With a new cookbook for chemo patients in the works, she’s channeling her experience into something positive.

SHANNON Martinez doesn’t believe in the notion of a ‘breast cancer journey.’

For the celebrity chef, the experience since diagnosis has been nothing short of a battle, the women who have been through or are going through this disease, fierce warriors.

“The pink washing does nothing, I think to show what the real story is. This is a time where, if you get cancer you’re fighting for your life, this isn’t a fluffy cancer story.”

“That resonated so much better with me and it’s about taking ownership of what’s happened to you,” she shares over the phone from her locked down apartment in Melbourne.

The 38 year old has appeared as a guest judge on Master Chef and is the proud owner of restaurant Smith and Daughters and the partnering Smith and Deli.

This year she was diagnosed with triple negative breast cancer, a particularly rare and debilitating form, in the midst of the pandemic and severe lockdowns in Victoria.

Compromised immunity from cancer treatment has left her isolating at home unless undergoing her weekly dose of immunotherapy and chemo.

“I’ve never seen my doctor’s faces,” she says of going through cancer in a pandemic where face masks are mandatory.

“It was the first meeting where I found out I had cancer, and it’s incredible how if you take a face away, it’s quite scary. It made the whole experience quite cold.”

She says that telling her mother who had recently recovered from pancreatic cancer and had been through breast cancer fifteen years ago was the most heartbreaking part.

“Having to tell mum was probably the hardest and saddest thing because I knew she’d had it before and I can only imagine how that would feel as a mother finding out your daughter has it too,” she reflects.

“You could tell the guilt was there.”

She says that she is incredibly inspired by her mum and her ability to go through what she is going through on top of having a family and running a business.

“Any time anything was going through my mind or I had questions I could just call my mum and you can’t get more personal than that.”

“She’s not sugar coating anything she’s gonna tell me straight up what’s going on.”

Between cancer treatments and supporting her business from isolation, Shannon has been working on a comic book called The Adventures of Chuck, turning the friends who have helped her through this process into superheroes.

Finding the right fit Women often return to Lourdes Achurra from Jade Body Fashions expressing gratitude for their new bodies. She says that helping breast cancer survivors has become an integral and rewarding part of her job.

LOURDES Achurra, the business owner behind Jade Body Fashions has been helping survivors of breast cancer look and feel like themselves again for the last two years.

Fitting women’s bras and providing elegant nightwear in the store, many don’t know that Lourdes is also fully trained in providing breast prosthetics for breast cancer survivors.

Ranging from small pieces designed to be inserted in bras or full prosthetics for those who have undertaken a single or double mastectomy as part of their treatment, Lourdes takes into account the body shape and needs of each woman she is fitting.

“What I do here, I can fit women and supply them with their breast form which is basically a prosthetic, so a pretend breast basically,” says Lourdes.

“The range is humongous now. You can get ones that are soft and shaped like a bust but you can also get a prosthetic that is more like a piece.

If someone has only had half a breast removed, it can be sort of an egg shape.”

In addition to the mental toll of the surgery and losing both or a single breast, mastectomy recipients often deal with back problems as a result of the new body imbalance.

Prosthetics can minimise this impact, taking into account the weight of the piece to correct a woman’s frame and provide a solution for those waiting for reconstruction surgery.

Lourdes says that although the process can sometimes be confronting, she is inspired by the women that she meets and feels rewarded by the opportunity to help them feel confident again in their new bodies, post-surgery.

She says that it can be quite an emotional process and that women often return to the store to thank her for the impact the prosthetics have on their lives and self-image.

“Some people have been, when I say hacked, it can be really overwhelming for them, whereas other people’s surgery is quite neat or can be concaved in the chest,” she says.

“Everyone’s experience is different.”

She’s also writing a new cookbook for chemo patients, determined to help other people going through the same thing and to create something positive out of her experiences.

“If you want to look for nutrition for cancer, there are so many books out there for that. So what I’m attacking is energy levels and mood,” she says.

“When you’re getting treatment you’ll find yourself going through waves, a couple of really good days where you feel ok and you have energy and then you crash.”

“Another side effect is just total loss of appetite as well.”

Turning the cogs in local history

Working hard to preserve our mechanical history THE BURDEKIN is an area full of rich and diverse history, much of which is celebrated by residents today.

Members of the Burdekin Machinery Preservationists Inc are just one group, bringing life back to machines prominent to the district’s history.

They have just received four motors to keep members busy with restoration projects.

The motors, one petrol and three diesel, include a rare red “Famous” Hit and Mis, and date back to the early 1900s.

The ‘new’ projects were donated from the North Queensland district, procured from Bowen, and now being worked on by the group at the Brandon Heritage Precinct.

Burdekin Machinery Preservationists President John Hanson says that although it took a bit to get the engines, they’ll be restored to their former glory.

Although seized, the engines are complete with the team on the consensus they’ll be back in running order in no time.

“They’ll be returned to running order so that they can be viewed and displayed,” he said.

The projects will keep the group of volunteers socially

active and retain local history in the area.

“Ninety-nine per cent of the machinery in the precinct is local, with 80 per cent of it in running order.”

“We’ve saved a lot of history from across the Burdekin.”

I THINK it says everything about politics that the leaders of the major parties have spent more time in regional Queensland in the past eight weeks than they have in the previous four years.

Suddenly – at election time – regional Queensland is important to them. And only then.

Over the past few decades, I have watched one of Queensland’s oldest, proudest and most valuable industries being slowly strangled by Government red and green tape and a lack of vision. And the State Government simply refuses to listen.

The sugarcane industry – the lifeblood of virtually every coastal city and town in Queensland – is being screwed.

It is only the resilience, commitment, and belief of our farmers, many with sugarcane in their blood going back three and four generations, that keeps us going.

farmers are exiting a twilight industry was gutting.

With the world sugar price at times making farming operations unviable, many growers are diversifying to reduce the risk.

Not just diversity into alternate crops but a new bio-economy – fuel, plastics, power (electricity and ethanol) that are fully sustainable.

Cane is a hardy crop, compatible with coastal Queensland’s tropical environment – it can withstand flood, fire, drought, and cyclone and still deliver a viable harvest.

Like other grasses, its complex root structure prevents soil erosion.

And farmers have been driving improved farm management practices to further reduce nutrient and chemical usage as well as farm runoff for decades.

However, there is an ideology-driven campaign by environmental groups to demonise our industry.

Caring for our land Hayden Menso hayden.menso@burdekinlocal.com.au THERE’S no tree craziness at our local Lower Burdekin Landcare group.

The organisation has been busy in recent months with clubhouse renovations, revegetation programs, school initiatives and a new water treatment plant.

The water treatment plant is used to educate school students and the public about the water filtration system and how plants use the process to clean water and thrive.

The group is also open to tailored school programs, where schools can reach out for sustainability programs. This week, the group is donating ten trees to a local school to help in its sustainability measures.

Its educational programs are on offer for anyone with a keen interest in the environment and gardening.

“We’re all passionate about gardening and living on the land. We are all volunteers who work separately to Landcare. It’s a great group and social opportunity,” Deb Calligaro said.

Not only do Landcare

host programs for schools, but they’re also working with Greening Australia and NQ Dry Tropics in land rehabilitation projects.

“We have 2,400 plants going to these organisations, working with land rehab and weed eradication.”

Landcare’s propagation nursery is stocked with readyto-plant natives, open to the public for purchase.

“There are thousands of seeds in here, and it’s always a good feeling seeing things grow,” Ms Calligaro said.

“We have mainly natives, but are also branching out into ornamentals and succulents, to host a wider interest.”

Everyone is welcome to Landcare, whether it’s to cultivate plants or just pop in for a coffee and chat. They hold propagation days on the first Saturday of each month and are open to the public.

Inquiry into controversial reef regulations reveals conflicting views A federal inquiry into controversial reef regulations invited submissions detailing the impact on farmers and the industry, addressing policies that aim to protect the Great Barrier Reef but harm producers.

Marina Trajkovich AN ONGOING debate in regards to controversial reef regulations led to a senate inquiry last July into the science being used to monitor water quality on the Great Barrier Reef and the impact of existing regulations on farmers.

The inquiry, bringing together industry leaders and members of parliament, looked into regulations established in 2019 that aim to monitor nutrient runoff from farms to reduce and better understand the impact of agriculture on the Great Barrier Reef.

Agricultural body CANEGROWERS says that the regulations put an unnecessary burden on farmers who aren’t being recognised for their existing efforts to protect the reef.

“Farmers across the state support a healthy, dynamic and much-loved Great Barrier Reef. We simply do not support the policy decision made by the State Government to regulate farmers to secure this outcome,” said Dan Galligan, the CEO of CANEGROWERS. CANEGROWERS are pushing for water quality requirements to be credible and realistic, releasing the tight administrative burdens

on farmers and the strict penalties if they do not comply.

They released an independent economic assessment that predicted a $1.3 billion hit to the Queensland economy over the next decade if the regulations in place are maintained.

Dan Galligan attributed this to reduced productivity on cane farms as a result of inflexible requirements that impose time consuming and financially detrimental burdens on farmers.

“This was a major opportunity to respond to the industry’s multiple concerns about reef policies, but instead, the lack of agreed actions risks leaving growers even more frustrated than they already are,” Mr Galligan said.

“The inquiry provided an opportunity to ventilate the many very serious concerns around the impacts of reef regulations and the lack of evidence to justify them,” he says.

“This isn’t the end of the battle for a common-sense approach to securing the health and future of the reef,” he says.

The science used to analyse the impact of water runoff from farms is a key

component in what has become a contentious debate, sparking discussion about how scientists and farmers can work together to achieve mutual goals.

While the committee’s majority report dismissed requests to investigate the science used to form the basis and justification of the regulations, they did support the need for greater scientific transparency that involves farmers in the conversation.

In contrast, the committee’s minority report called for a revisitation of the science that shaped the regulation policies in order to regain trust from producers.

“The extreme disconnect between science and agriculture has been one of the most concerning findings and I genuinely hope there will be a focus on re-building the trust between them,” said LNP senator Susan Mcdonald.

“During this Inquiry it became crystal clear, that leaving aside complex matters of science, there has been a complete failure by the Government to treat primary producers with any respect,” she says.

“We know genuine scienceagriculture partnerships are capable of achieving solid environmental outcomes and

governments should focus on these programs before turning to harsh, out-ofstep, blunt force regulatory approaches,” she says.

During the course of public hearings, scientists from the Australian Institute of Marine Science confirmed that climate change and extreme weather events are the most pressing threats to the Great Barrier Reef with devastating consequences.

Comparatively, it was suggested that nitrogen and water runoff from farms washing into catchment areas is impacting approximately 3% of coral masses throughout the reef.

David Cazzulino, a campaigner from the Australian Marine Conservation Society rejects the notion that this science should be reinvestigated, criticising the inquiry into the reef regulations as politically driven and unnecessary.

“From the start, we said this was a politically motivated inquiry, wasting taxpayer dollars to murky the waters on settled reef science,” said Mr Cazzulino.

“For all the theatre and posturing from certain senators, the final report confirms what scientists have been telling us for decades,” he says.

Scientists at the inquiry attributed water run off from farms that may contain chemicals such as nitrogen and fertilisers as impacting 3% of coral on the reef.

Sharp shooters all round JUNIORS GRAND Final day at Burdekin Netball Association, held on Saturday October 10th, exceeded all expectations in what has been an unusual year for sport.

Planning for the unknown, the committee were overwhelmed at the turnout to celebrate a very successful shortened season.

Starting with Net Set Go and the 11/12 year Grand Final, the day culminated with the A Grade Grand Final, with a huge number of families in attendance to

watch some fantastic netball from all ages.

The 11/12 year Grand Final saw Minor Premiers Terminators take on Picklejuice. Undefeated for much of the season, Terminators were the favourites to win the match.

However, an in-form Picklejuice pulled out some impressive games of netball at the right end of the season, and ran away with the match by 8 goals. This was an impressive display from the young netballers, making the Premiers trophy theirs.

These young players showed exemplary sportsmanship all year, towards teammates and other teams, making their coach very proud. It is great to win, but to win with great sportsmanship is even better - well done girls!

The 13/16 year Grand Final was a tight match between Minor Premiers Skrt Skrt and White Lightning. The match skills of the older players in this division was great to watch, and each team had a mix of both experienced and newer players. After a tight battle, White Lightning

were the winners at the final whistle taking out the title of Premiers for 2020.

The Presentation of Junior Trophies followed, with President Cara Trindle thanking everyone who helped out in any way during the season. A special award of the day was the Joanne Strano Memorial Trophy for Player of the U12 Grand Final, awarded to Sienna Prescott.

Sienna left her auntie’s wedding in Townsville to come back for her game, and her coach is very happy she did!

SPORT SENIORS AFTER the presentation, games resumed with the B Grade Grand Final. It was a battle between Minor Premiers Pizzazz and the much-improved team The Birds.

Well done to The Birds who were victorious, taking out the Premiers trophy for 2020.

The A Reserve Grand Final was again a battle between

youth and experience.

The experienced outfit of NQIB, who mostly have been playing together for many years with a few new additions, took on an in-form Yung Wungz, made up mostly of the U15 rep team (who didn’t travel anywhere due to COVID). With a mother and daughter on the NQIB team, and another daughter in Yung Wungz, pride was on the line.

The oldies couldn’t match it with the speed and skills of the youngies, with them eventually running away with a convincing win.

The final match of the day was the A Grade Grand final, where Minor Premiers 50 Shades took on a determined Strikers team.

question or complaint. This year, it was awarded to Jacki Samwell, who stepped in to run our canteen while Gloria was out after knee surgery.

Wednesday Ladies Results Last Wednesday our ladies played a stableford event and the Overall Winner was Patricia Schileff then we had two players on equal points and a count back was required with Carmel Dal Ponte second and Shirley Jones third other places getters were fourth Patricia Lawson, fifth Von Predebon and sixth Wendy Baker.

Thursday Club Results Well he has cracked the big time last Thursday John Mau won but only after having a cut of the cards from Doug Cecil also with twenty six points, great play guys. Then we had Ben Smith in third place on twenty five points.

Friday Veterans Result.

Once again not many players for Friday veterans and the ladies winner was Mavis Carvolth on seventeen points.

The men’s winner was Les Andersen with nineteen points second was John Lewis on sixteen points.

Sixteen ladies braved the heat to play bowls on Tuesday afternoon, our social bowls day.

The winners of the afternoon were Betty Godwin, Rayleen Hervey, Isabel Cislowski and Mary Poli who defeated Carolyn Jones, Di Lindridge, Pat Herd and Sandra Stidston. Brandon Bowls

Brandon Bowls Club was the place to be, on Friday night, with Nutrien Ag Solutions hosting a great night of bowls.

There was plenty of fertiliser talk, earthy humour, and adventurous bowls played. The team of Margaret Chapman, Darelle Pearce, and Damian Morello were highly delighted with their first place. The team of Joe Yipanazar, Norm and Lyn Storrie and L Floridus were beaming after taking out second prize. The wise old crew of Ray Panecassio, Robert Lazzarin and Ray Calligaro took out the Bradman’s prize.

On Saturday, two championship Triples matches were contested.

The trio of Rob Garner, Doug Kiehne, and Gary Nosworthy were going blow for blow with the trio of Richard Mau, Rino Lazzarin and Norm Higgenbotham until two-thirds of the way into the match.

Richard’s crew then shifted up a gear and went into action finishing off the match with a comfortable victory. In the other match the trio of Simon Griggs, Kev Collinson and Chris Griggs took the match by the scruff of the neck early on, only for the trio of Doug Robins, Nev Dickinson and Ross McLaughlin to mount a fightback. The fightback started to look promising, till, Simon and his crew went up another level, cruising to victory.

On Sunday the Julies Pharmacy mixed triples afternoon was contested. The trio of Norm

Norm set up the tale of woe for the opposition and Joe’s lazer like sharpness cutting through any hope they had of winning. Ray Panecassio, Wayne Coonan and Mick McCloskey put in a calm, and focussed performance to take out second prize. Jamie Woods, Vince Beitia and Alan Garioch took out third prize. With Vince, “the bowls whisperer”, guiding the bowls into the head, the opposition had no chance.

Matches will be on again on Friday night with names in by 6:00pm for a 6:30pm start and on Sunday with names in by 1:00pm for a 1:30pm start.

Sunday saw a nice summer day and the breeze certainly helped.

Two games of triples were played , and some very nice bowls were witnessed. It is surprising how the competition rises when there is something to play for.

A good turnup and some great bowling games went down to the final end, which always makes it a good fun day.

Soccer finals success Cont. from page 32 on Friday night for their Preliminary Final match.

With the game being a high-stakes affair, the match started as a battle with both teams being up for the contest.

Olympic took an early lead midway through the first half; however Burdekin looked to overturn this with a great run from Ryan Scodellaro from midfield before he was brought down in the penalty area. Dylan Meinicke was trusted to take the penalty and he did not disappoint, making the score 1-1.

Olympic received a red card late into the first half, which gave Burdekin an advantage heading into the break.

The second half saw the Panthers start to gain momentum as the team started to create chances to score. Another penalty awarded to the Burdekin gave Dylan Meinicke the chance to make the score 2-1.

The match finished 2-1, and this victory now means that Burdekin will play Rebels in the Youth Men Grand Final at 8.00 this Friday evening in Townsville.

The Under 13s played Olympic in the Preliminary Final and lost 2-3 after having most of the game. Nate Di Bartolo scored in the first half, with the score 1-1 at half time. In the second half, Kyle Parravicini scored for the Burdekin, but Olympic equalised and then scored

the winner in the last minute of the game.

The Under 15s, after a week’s rest, are up against SES Phoenix in their Grand final on Saturday morning at 8.00 am! That means a very early start for the kids.

The 42nd Season of Delta cleaners Night Soccer is now into Week 6 and the last of the grading rounds. The Grand Finals will be held on Friday, December 11.

The Home Hill Golf Club had a very busy weekend last weekend. The Ladies held their NQIB Open on Saturday and with 90 players, it was going to be a big day.

The A Grade Gross winner was Bev Suckling from Townsville with 76. The runner up was local Emily Cannavan on 78.

The Nett winner was Melanie Patullo from Proserpine with her score of 70 nett with Charlene Borninkhof from Rowes Bay the runner up on 72 nett.

In the B1 division, Elizabeth Tillack from Lavarack shot a 90 to take out the Gross winner prize and Home Hill’s Beth Prescott the runner up wih 91.

Janelle Malcolm of Townville had a score of 71nett for the Nett win and Meryl Cheetham was the runner up with 73 nett.

Joyce Buckley from Collinsville was the B2 Gross winner with her score of 98 on a countack from Deb Breeze from Bowen the runner up. The Nett winner was Jan Cannavan from Home Hill on 72 nett, closely followed by another Collinsville player in Del Henderson taking the runner up prize on 73 nett.

Home Hill players cleaned up in the C Grade Gross division with the winner being Heather Todman with 94 and Judi Sheahan the runner up with 99. Sue Bird from Rowes Bay had 68 nett and was awarded the Nett winner with Debbie Curnow from Lavarack the runner up on 70 nett.

On the Sunday a field of 56 men took to the course for a 27 hole competition for the NQIB Men’s Open. The Open winner and A Grade Champion was Josh Searle from Ayr with a score of 109 with local Scott Sibson taking out the runner up prize with 115. The Nett winners were Ayr’s Craig West on 109 nett and Home Hill’s Simon Power on 111.

In the B Grade division the winner was Wayne Johnstone with 122 from Ayr and the runner up was Jason Forno from Home Hill on 123. Home Hill’s Greg MacElroy took out the Nett winner prize on 111 with a countback from Jack Edwards from Ayr. In B1 Grade, Ayr players, Mark Dall’Osto and Lenny Heron were the Gross winner on 123 and Nett winner on 117 nett respectively.

In C Grade the competition was close, with Home Hill players, Kevin Chatfield taking out the Gross prize with 138 from James Johnson on 139. The nett winner was Mick McMahon from Mystic Sands with Neville Eathorne from Ayr being the runner up.

The Pin shots went to Chantze Warcon and Josh Searle for A Grade. Jason Forno and Jack Edwards took out he B1 Grade pin shots with Mark Dall’Osto taking both pin hots for B2 Grade. Paul Krause and Geoff Todman were the winners of the pin shots in C Grade.

Dylan kicking all the right goals WHILE many school students have no idea of what they want to do after high school, one Burdekin boy is making ground in the soccer arena.

At just 15 years old, Dylan Meinicke has been awarded

a football scholarship at Nudgee College near Brisbane, beginning in early 2021.

It is a welcome opportunity to help the prodigy pursue his sporting dreams.

From playing in both the Burdekin Panthers Premier League side and Youth Team in 2020, Dylan went through the expression of interest application process and was successful.

“I was very happy.

I’ve been working hard to get somewhere in football. Getting given [the scholarship] means better opportunities, better play, so it should be great,” Dylan said.

His love and dedication to the game means the scholarship is a perfect opportunity.

“I’m obsessed with the game. I’m basically training every day, and if I’m not, I feel weird.”

Playing since he was just four years old, Dylan will relish the beginning of the new year on the soccer fields.

“It’s pretty rare for someone here to be able to be given the opportunity to go down there, so I feel very honoured,” he said.

“It’s just pure excitement. I can’t wait.”

Looking to the future, his dreams in football will see him on the world’s stage.

“I’d just love to play out of Australia, obviously at the top level in Australia as well would be a great achievement, but I’d like to go overseas.”

Burdekin Panthers Premier League coach Chris Wicks said it was an excellent achievement for Dylan, and he will be missed in the Burdekin.

“This is the right time for Dylan. It’s not uncommon for him to be training by himself, putting in effort in extra time.

He never shies away from football.”

“I am a little saddened as well, that some of the quality we have in the town doesn’t actually stay in the town.

“As we look to build a strong senior side, it would be great

to have players like Dylan for more than the year or two years that we get them,” Chris said.

Dylan’s talent and success are attributed to his commitment to the sport.

“I would love to have Dylan here available for a premier league side for another couple of years, but I’m really excited he can go away and have these opportunities, and great that Dylan’s got the support of his parents and family; I can’t see that being an easy thing to send a young son down to Brisbane. He’s got some great supporters in his corner, and he’s a very capable kid, and I’m sure he’ll be successful because he’ll make it work down there.”

SOCCER FINALS SUCCESS The Burdekin Panthers Youth Team

by Cyclops IT HAS been a big yet compact season for the Burdekin Football Club.

The Panthers fielded six Senior teams and two Junior teams in the North Queensland competition, with reasonable success.

In the Men’s department, the Premiers finished fifth, the Reserves took out the Minor Premiership, the 3rd Division Funkies finished second and are through to the Grand Final, and the Youths also finished second and are also in next weekends’ Grand Final.

In the Women’s’, the Premiers finished sixth and the Reserves fourth.

In the Juniors, the Under 13s and Under 15s were both

Minor Premiers, and the Under 15s are through to the Grand Final Burdekin Tyre Service Reserve Grade team missed qualifying for the Grand Final when they stumbled at the final hurdle to lose 4-3 in extra time against Saints Eagles Souths on Saturday night. The Panthers went into half time leading 3-1 thanks to two goals from Cody Betteridge and one from Adrian Saunders. Luke Mottin made two fine saves to keep the locals on top at the break.

The second half saw several chances created by the Burdekin, and none converted whilst SES took their opportunities and locked the scores up at 3-3 at full time to send the game into extra time. SES took the

lead in the 95th minute, and the Panthers had a couple of good chances to square the scoreline but squandered them. SES hung on to win 4-3 and move into the Grand Final against Olympic.

The season is not over for the local Reserve Grade team as they have to play Mareeba in the NQ Championship on November 7. They now have a week off to gather their thoughts and get over a few niggles before they return to prepare for this game.

The Austral Masonry Funkies who qualified for the Grand Final last week meet Wulguru at 8.00 on Friday night.
