A Message from the Publisher David J Dunworth I am pleased to present an Influencer that has blazed a trail across a continent. Having grown up north of the border, no customs agent, border check-in, toll bridge or tunnel, or water barrier could contain, Tricia Benn is a colleague and friend, but a true inspiration to me and everyone in the C-Suite Network and beyond.

As the second issue of my new mag, I want to let readers know that the feedback to this periodical has been both encouraging and enlightening. Yes, in the enthusiasm of launching the inaugural issue with none other than my favorite of all time, US President Ronald Reagan, I may have overdone it a bit with the copy. It was easy for me to cover his life and presidency, as I was part of his Republican Presidential Task Force on Private Initiatives and the Inner Circle back in the day.

That doesn’t mean I am a died-in-the-wool Republican any longer. I must say I am a recovering political animal and try my best to steer clear of politics altogether. But because I am human, an eight-year veteran of the Air Force during the Vietnam Era, I get a bit frazzled when I see “stuff” going on in politics that upsets me; I do my best not to take sides (well, most of the time).

The Spectral Society Unmasked

Once upon a moonlit October night, in a decrepit, cobweb-covered mansion known as Hollowhaven House, an eerie organization known as the "Spectral Society" was born. The mansion itself was rumored to be cursed, situated on the outskirts of a quaint, fog-shrouded village.

The Society was formed by a group of individuals who shared a fascination with all things supernatural, and they believed that within the mansion's haunted halls, they could unlock the secrets of the spirit world.

In the beginning, Hollowhaven House was a place of wonder and mystique. The members of the Spectral Society gathered in their elaborate, ghostly costumes adorned with glowing creatures of the night in all manner of macabre. Jack-o'lanterns and headless horsemen roamed the eerily dingy hallways.

They hosted extravagant Halloween parties where laughter and merriment filled the air. The mansion's grand ballroom echoed with the sounds of eerie melodies played on ancient instruments.

However, as the years rolled on, the Society's fascination with the paranormal took a dark, grotesque, and even blacker turn. They began to delve deeper into

Ah, to deceive or not to be deceived, that's the real pickle, isn't it?

Picture this - Deception, it's like a snake in the grass, lurking in the shadows, ready to pounce when you least expect it. Much like how that snake in the Garden of Eden pulled a fast one on poor Eve. Promised her the world, he did, but what did she get? Trouble and a one-way ticket out of paradise. A cautionary tale, that one is, about the perils of believing in too-good-to-be-true offers.

Now, let's talk about self-deception, shall we?

Oh, it's a sneaky fellow, lurking within our very minds. You see, we humans have this knack for fooling ourselves, creating illusions that lead us astray from what truly matters. It's not just some fancy concept from old stories; it's as natural as the sunrise.

We trick ourselves into procrastinating when we should be conquering tasks, indulge in those guilty pleasures when we know we shouldn't, and, oh, let's not forget about settling for less in relationships, convincing ourselves it's for the best.

As leaders, we must listen, provide honest and open feedback, and support anyone struggling with the current situation. Outside of dealing with COVID-19, there’s nothing different from what we encounter daily. We battle and solve problems everyday, creating strategies that align our vision, mission, and values. We know many are going through hard times, and we always keep that present. However, we still need to be present. Everyone has noise in their head, and it’s sometimes hard to hear anything else, but this, too, shall pass.

As part of my series about what we can do to remain hopeful and support each other during anxious times, I had the pleasure of interviewing Tricia Benn.

Tricia is a Partner and Executive Vice-President of the C-Suite Network and the General Manager of The Hero Club, an invitation-only membership organization for CEOs, founders, and investors. As an executive within both organizations, her mission is to build a platform and community that accelerates the success of C-level executives. My entire career, I’ve made it a point to dedicate myself to building people, teams, and organizations. That has been a common theme throughout my career. I’m a business leader who loves to create efficient business models and create success by launching, building, and growing companies.

Everything revolves around aligning that mission with the vision and values. I have always been disruptive — I’ll be nice about it but will disrupt. It can sometimes be uncomfortable, but we have to feel a little discomfort to complete the mission.

Great business leaders need to identify the innovators within their organizations and invest accordingly because internal entrepreneurs – or intrapreneurs – are the employees who will save your company.

Entrepreneurs are a special type of businessperson. Innovative, visionary and characteristically savvy, they’re skilled at recognizing business opportunities from a hundred paces, developing concepts, products and services to meet consumer needs they may not have even known they needed, and risking it all to bring their startup to fruition.

As Apple Founder Steve Jobs once described it, being an entrepreneur is all about “putting a dent in the universe”. This also applies to the millions of lesser-known entrepreneurs who may not be household names themselves, but whose business innovations continue to revolutionize the way we live our lives.

That’s not to say all entrepreneurs will be successful. For every entrepreneurial success story we hear about, there are thousands more failure stories we don’t. Starting a business from scratch can be expensive and fraught with risk. Without solid outside investment and access to essential resources, innovative business ideas will remain just that – ideas.

And yet, it’s ideas the business world needs as we embark on an uncertain future quickened by rapid technological advancements and the essential need for businesses to perpetually innovate to survive.

VALUE FROM WITHIN In recent times, the business world has come to recognize the value of entrepreneurial innovation more widely and sought to entice and invest in those who exhibit these skills in-house. First coined by Gifford Pinchot III and Elizabeth S Pinchot in a 1978 white paper, the term intrapreneur – a portmanteau of ‘internal’ and ‘entrepreneur’ – has since gained significant traction.

“Intrapreneurs work and lead with the producer mindset,” said business author, educator and speaker Oliver DeMille. “They run their department, team or company with an abundance mentality, an attachment to true principles, and a fearless and informed faith in people and quality.”

Investing in in-house innovators ensures today’s companies and organizations are, in fact, investing in their futures, as the value intrapreneurs add to a company may prove essential to its very survival.

Research suggests that a business’s winning formula today will not continue to be so in the future, and without investment in innovation, a company can lose its way and quickly become irrelevant to the market.

An influential McKinsey study found that while the average lifespan of companies listed in Standard & Poor (S&P)’s 500 Index was 61 years in 1958, today, a company is likely to exist for fewer than 18 years. The same study projects that by 2027, 75 percent of the companies currently on the S&P 500 will have disappeared completely.

Founded by one of the world’s most famous entrepreneurs, Virgin recognized the significant value of the intrapreneur from its earliest days and offers a core example of how investing in innovation can drive success. Richard Branson may have been the brains behind Virgin, but he relied on a team help him propel his company, quite literally, into the stratosphere.

Members wore costumes that concealed their true identities, fostering an air of mystery and secrecy. Ghosts and goblins were no longer just costumes; they seemed to have taken residence within the mansion's walls. The jack-o'lanterns that once illuminated the mansion now cast sinister glows.

Trickery and deception became the order of the day. The once warm and inviting atmosphere transformed into one of distrust and fear. Members questioning the Society's dark path mysteriously vanished, leaving only whispers of their fate.

The final Halloween party held at Hollowhaven House was a dreadful affair.

Guests arrived in costumes so terrifying that they could have stepped out of a nightmare. A sense of impending doom hung heavy in the air. As the clock struck midnight, a chilling silence enveloped the mansion, broken only by the distant sound of a mournful howl.

With a sudden, thunderous crash, the mansion's grand chandelier fell, shattering into a thousand pieces. The Spectral Society, now unmasked and revealed in all their malevolence, disbanded amid chaos and confusion. The curse long lingered over Hollowhaven House and seemed to claim its final victims.

Ultimately, the organization that had once risen like the Roman Empire met its demise, consumed by the darkness it had courted. Hollowhaven House, forever haunted and cursed, forever stands as a solemn reminder of the Halloween dreams that had turned into chilling nightmares.

And so, the tale of the Spectral Society and their ill-fated organization serves as a haunting cautionary tale, reminding us that even the most enchanting of beginnings can lead to the darkest ends when we dance too close to the shadows of the unknown.

Moral of this story: Be careful what you wish for; you just might get it.

keep that in mind. When the current pandemic began, our Chairman, Jeffrey Hayzlett, stressed his ‘5 keeps’ — which included keeping everyone engaged. If people stay engaged, with their work, co-workers, and again, communities, we will get through this, TOGETHER! 4. Orientation to action — This directly correlates to ‘this too shall pass.’ We have implemented weekly “huddles” with every level of our membership that allows us to continually act. For example, these huddles serve as a way to get everyone engaged — whether by offering a ‘give,’ which we define as a product of service our members give one another in order to stay engaged and thrive. It could be anything from a book someone has authored, to consultation services, to making a connection to someone who can help another member with a current problem. We can’t just sit back and wait for everything to pass us by. We need to lead by example and keep moving.

Stopping is not an option right now. It’s not about taking monumental steps and changing course, it’s about taking small, actionable steps to move the needle forward. Here’s an example: last September, I was fortunate enough to visit the Crazy Horse Memorial in Custer, SD. We met with the team carving a mountain, a 140-year old start-up of sorts. They know they won’t accomplish the mission in their 1. lifetime, but they’re taking small steps every day to complete the mission. It’s not about speed, but about action. It’s a lesson that will forever serve as a reminder to any of us rushing to get things done. Slow and steady wins the race.

Take what people say with a grain of salt and apply it when, where, and how it’s useful to put yourself in a positive space. We have to assess every situation and apply it accordingly. We’re all moving very fast these days, so let’s take time to live our values, and maintain the courage of our convictions.

Keep remembering # 3 — this, too shall pass.

Keep repeating until it sinks in. As leaders, we must listen, provide honest and open feedback, and support anyone struggling with the current situation. Outside of dealing with COVID-19, there’s nothing different from what we encounter daily. We battle and solve problems everyday, creating strategies that align our vision, mission, and values. We know many are going through hard times, and we always keep that present. However, we still need to be present. Everyone has noise in their head, and it’s sometimes hard to hear anything else, but this, too, shall pass.

What are the best resources you would suggest to a person who is feeling anxious?

First and foremost, give yourself grace. It’s natural to feel anxious, and fear uncertain situations. But, it’s critically important that we empower ourselves to take action and allow ourselves to celebrate even the smallest victories.

The strategy will be slightly different for everyone. For example, if you’re a person who values connecting with others, call a friend.

Reach out. Don’t stay silent. If you’re an intellectual person, re-visit the stoics, as in the Greek philosophers. Their main ambition was to teach people how to be calm and brave in the face of overwhelming anxiety and pain — a philosophy that remains extremely relevant today.
