President’s Address May I extend a very warm welcome to Gawthorpe for our 142nd Maypole Procession and Feast to be held on Saturday 7th May 2016 and to the home of the 53rd World Coal Carrying Championships on Easter Monday. We also look forward to providing an afternoon tea and entertainment for the older folk of the village on Monday 9th May in the Darby and Joan Hall, which will be funded in part through the street collection taken during the Procession, please give generously.

The Gawthorpe Maypole Committee continues to work very hard to ensure our great community traditions live on in our little village. In 2015, we had a wonderful Maypole Procession, despite indifferent weather and our coal carrying championships just go from strength to strength, attracting the world’s media, ensuring that Gawthorpe is firmly on the map. Last year we were recognised by Country Life magazine as one of the 6 best May Day Festivals in the Country! - Gawthorpe, punching above its weight once again!

Our events are more than just a tradition – they are the very lifeblood of our community.

Those outside our community often pass favourable comments on what we sometimes take for granted. Community traditions like these are precious occasions, which need and deserve our support. Each year, the Maypole Dancers perform for us and our local school, Gawthorpe Academy, very generously provides the training and support to the dancers over months of hard work.

Each year, our May Queen and Maids of Honour take pride of place at the head of the Procession. Gawthorpe maintains its identity, in part through these celebrations. Whether you have lived in Gawthorpe all your life, are new to the area, or are just visiting, we hope you feel welcome.

The Maypole Committee would like to express its gratitude and sincere thanks to our major sponsor Eric F. History of the Gawthorpe Maypole Celebrations Maypole dancing in England owes a great deal to the Morris Dancers, said to have been brought to this country during the reign of Richard II, and during the reign of Henry VIII had reached most of rural villages, including Gawthorpe. In the days of Tudor England, May Day celebrations reached their height. May Day became a public holiday and it was the custom throughout rural England for all classes and ages to go out early in the morning and make for the woods, there to obtain a Maypole which was usually from a Birch tree, bunches of blossom and spring flowers were then used, along with ribbons to decorate the Maypole. The villagers then returned to their homes in procession, the Maypole being carried in the middle of the procession. The Maypole was then erected on the village green whilst people danced around it to the accompaniment of pipes, fiddlers and singing. The rest of the day was devoted to merriment and revelry. In 1850 a local gentleman by the name of Mr. A. Pollard suggested and bought the first recorded permanent Maypole for the village. The current Maypole was erected in 1986 after the previous one (erected 1953) was found on inspection to be unsafe and liable to collapse at any time.

In 1906 the local school children, both boys and girls, were taught the intricate steps of Maypole dancing by Mrs. Stephens, a teacher at the school. In 1927 a Miss Green joined the school and assisted in the instruction of the various dance sequences and we now have a list of dedicated teachers who in addition to their normal duties as teachers have done their share of upholding the Gawthorpe tradition.

Teachers: Mrs. Binks, Miss Battye, Miss Wardell, Miss Bruce, Miss Stansfield, Mrs. Archer, Mrs. Halstead, Mrs. Atkinson, Mrs. Alex Blakely-Taylor and Mrs. Maureen Food, Mrs. Gill.

The dances consist of one of the most comprehensive plaiting sequences in the country.

These are; Ropes, The Barbers Pole, The Single Plait, The Double Plait, The Spiders Web, The Gypsy’s Tent and The Centenary Polka. It takes approximately six months to teach the 26 dancers each year to dance steps and as the seniors leave for secondary school at eleven, they are replaced by 8/9 year olds from the earlier school years. Since 1906 to 2016, that’s an amazing 2,860 dancers who will have been taught how to dance the various steps of Maypole dancing. In 1914, Gawthorpe’s Maypole dancing was captured on cine film by French Pathe News and can be viewed via the Yorkshire Film Archive website.

The procession route is approximately 4 1/2 miles with a 20-minute break at Ossett Community Centre half way round. The procession itself consists of decorated floats, entered by local schools, church organisations and local businesses and companies.

Children in a variety of fancy dress costumes, Marching Bands, Majorettes, Horses along with various other competitors and of course the May Queen and her Maids of Honour.

There is also a Funfair, provided by “Robinson’s” for more than 100 years, within walking distance, which has various rides and usual type of entertainment associated with them.

The local dignitaries normally invited to partake in the procession are the Mayor of Wakefield Council; the local MPs for the area is invited, along with various Ossett and Gawthorpe Ward Councillors and religious and community representatives for the area.

In Memory It is with great sadness that we have to tell you, our readers, of the tragic loss of two very special members of our local Community. Arnold (Arnie) Silverwood and Betty Reynolds.

Arnie Silverwood passed away in October of last year after a short, age related illness. I had the pleasure of knowing Arnie and his lovely family for well over 30 years. Arnie, larger than life and always with a smile on his face, was a pleasure to talk to. He had 2 passions in his life, firstly his family and then his beloved pigeons. He spent most of his leisure time supporting several local Pigeon Clubs throughout the local area. Never a member of the Gawthorpe Maypole Committee, as his wife Dorothy was, but he was always there to help us out at our long forgotten Harvest Festivals. If the bidding was slow he would step in and spur the bidders on and more often than not, buy the item himself.

Arnie worked for many years on his milk round and never really retired but had even more time to spend with his pigeons in his later years. Andrew and Gillian his children, are still very much involved with Arnie's charities and still raising money for the Pigeon Clubs and the Gawthorpe Maypole Committee. Andrew completed all three men’s Coal Races in 2015, an amazing feat, and in the process he raised over £3,000 for Dementia Care. Andrew was supported by his daughters Hayley and Rose as well as Gillian’s daughter Jessica in his quest, as they all ran the Women’s coal race event.

Arnie was a pleasure to have known and is, and always will be, fondly remembered by us all.

Sad news again readers, Gawthorpe lost one of its well know figures in December of last year.

Mrs. Betty Reynolds, affectionately known as "Post Office Betty". Betty ran our local Post Office for many years and it became quite a focal point in our small village; the place that most of Gawthorpe called in at some point during the day for a chance to catch up on local happenings and to buy a few groceries.

Sadly our Post Office was closed several years ago and we lost our focal point, but this enabled her and her husband David to downsize and move in to a bungalow, but still in the Village. By this time Betty had two grandsons and spent a lot of time with them at the bungalow. They then had the opportunity to travel for longer periods of time to warmer climes, which they greatly enjoyed. Betty and David were long-term members of the local Conservative Club and Committee Members there.

Betty was a great supporter of the Gawthorpe Maypole Committee and generously supports the ‘Best in Children’s Categories’ Class in our Procession on May Day Weekend. Several years ago Betty became ill but responded well to treatment and made a good recovery and her and David resumed their travels, but sadly Betty became ill again and passed away late last year.

We have lost two of our well respected and much loved members of the community who will always have a place in our hearts.

We have over the past 12 months lost several other members of our community. May we extend our most sincere condolences to their families and friends.

Procession Route: High Street, Pickering Lane, Cross Street, High Street, Swithenbank Street, Swithenbank Ave., Bridle Place, Streetside, Kingsway,Ventnor Way, Bank Street, Illingworth Street, Stop at Community Centre for refreshments. Return, Prospect Road, Church Street, Dewsbury Road, Bridle Lane and Swithenbank Street.

Any found not to have adhered to or completed the route may be disqualified from the float/fancy dress competition.

Entry Rules: Only two competitors in one class – First Prize only will be awarded.

Three competitors in one class – Only First and Second prize awarded.

Prize money paid out on Saturday on Maypole Green following the announcement of the results at approx. 5pm. All cups must be returned to the Maypole Cabin in good clean condition by 12 noon on the day of the Procession or preferably before.

History of the Gawthorpe World Coal Carrying Championships At the century-old Beehive Inn situated in Gawthorpe the following incident took place one day in 1963. Reggie Sedgewick and one Amos Clapham, a local coal merchant and at the time president of the Gawthorpe Maypole Committee were enjoying some well-earned liquid refreshment whilst stood at the bar, lost in their own thoughts. When in bursts Lewis Hartley in a somewhat exuberant mood. On seeing the other two, he said to Reggie, “By gum lad tha’ looks bu*ge#ed!” slapping Reggie heartily on the back. Whether because of the force of the blow or because of the words that accompanied it, Reggie was just a little put out.‘’ Ah’m as fit as thee’’ he told Lewis, ‘’an’ if tha’ dun’t believe me, gerra a bagga coil on thi back an ‘ah’ll get one on mine, an ‘ah’ll race thee to t’top o’ t’wood!’’ (Coil, let me explain is Yorkshire speak for coal). While Lewis digested the implications of this challenge a Mr. Fred Hirst, Secretary of the Gawthorpe Maypole Committee (and not a man to let a good idea go to waste) raised a cautioning hand. “Owd on a minute,’’ said Fred and there was something in his voice that made them all listen. ‘Aven’t we been looking fer summat t’do on Easter Monday? If we’re gunna ‘ave a race, then let’s ‘ave it.

Let’s ‘ave a coil race from t’Barracks ta’ t’Maypole.’’ (The Barracks being the more common name given by the locals to The Royal Oak Public House) Thus was born The World Coal Carrying Championships, which every Easter Monday lifts the village of Gawthorpe out of obscurity and into the headlines. No event in the Olympic Games could stimulate more enthusiasm than this annual contest of stamina and muscle.

Gawthorpe is a tough little place, lying on the A638 between Dewsbury and Wakefield where the former Yorkshire coalfield merges into the former Heavy Woollen District. The mills and mines are all closed now, but hard work is still so much of a tradition here that the residents can scarcely have enough of it! Hence the yearly battle to be “King of the Coil Humpers” or Queen for the women folk.

The main events start on Owl Lane outside the Royal Oak Public House, where both men and women race in their respective events with a sack of coal, 50kg for men and 20kg for women, for approx seven tenths of a mile, 1108. 25 yards to be precise, to secure the best time before being allowed to drop their ‘secks ‘o’ coil” on the village green at the foot of the Maypole in the heart of the village of Gawthorpe.

The current male WORLD RECORD is 4mins. 6seconds held by DAVID JONES of Meltham. He achieved this time twice, in 1991 and again in 1995, just to prove that the first time wasn’t a fluke! In fact of the top ten times, he holds six of them.

The current female WORLD RECORD HOLDER for the women’s race is CATHERINE FENTON (nee Foley) of Batley with a time of 4mins 25 seconds.
