The Glasgow Distillery Celebrate 10 Years of Whisky Making
On the 5th of March 2025, The Glasgow Distillery is celebrating a milestone ten years since the filling of its very first whisky cask. Established with a vision to reignite Glasgow’s rich whisky-making heritage, The Glasgow Distillery filled Cask No. 1 on March 5th, 2015, with the release of its flagship single malt Glasgow 1770 The Original following in 2018.
Over the past decade, the distillery has pushed the boundaries of whisky-making, crafting single malts that capture Glasgow’s vibrant character. By creating three styles of new make spirit, the whisky makers achieve multiple distinct flavour profiles, offering a wide spectrum of choices for their whisky portfolio each year.

As The Glasgow Distillery celebrate 10 Years of Whisky Making, and in April released their first 10 Year Old single malt, we thought it would be a good time to sit down with their Founder, Mike Hayward, and ask him some questions.
How did you become Co-Founder of The Glasgow Distillery?
I founded The Glasgow Distillery in 2012 alongside my long-term business partner, Liam Hughes. Before embarking on our distillery journey, we had both been in the drinks industry for over 20 years working across business development, brand strategy, product launches, operations, and project management for a wide number of well renowned drinks brands, including whisky. The drinks industry has been central to my entire working life and the experience of seeing the exciting changes and innovation across spirit categories is one of the reasons we produce not only single malt Scotch Whisky at The Glasgow Distillery, but also gin, vodka, rum and blended malt Scotch, too.
What does whisky mean to you?
Whisky is both pleasure and business and it’s a privilege to be able to call it both. I enjoy whisky in my downtime and find joy in discovering new brands and new expressions that are innovative and have a similar ethos to us, pushing the boat out in terms of experimentation and creating single malts that offer up a diverse range of exciting flavour profiles. From a business perspective, whisky means working hard to deal with the demands of the day-to-day running of an operating distillery and all the challenges that are associated with that, which can subsequently be celebrated when the fruits of our labour become our latest releases
How has The Glasgow Distilleryand its whisky - evolved over the past decade?
We filled our first cask 10 years ago, and in 2018 launched Glasgow 1770 Single Malt. This was followed by our Peated release in 2019, and Triple
Distilled in 2020 — together forming our Signature Range. These three distinct spirit styles reflect our modern, urban approach to whisky making, allowing us to create depth and character from the very start, not just through cask influence. In 2022, we introduced our Small Batch Series – limited editions that explore how our spirits interact with different cask types. They’ve quickly become a favourite with both our team and customers, and we have more coming soon. As our whisky has evolved, so has our distillery. We doubled our stills in 2019, and in 2024 added our own cask warehouse and cooperage to enhance how we mature and care for our whiskies. On the 15th of April this year we launched our first 10 Year Old Single Malt – a single cask celebratory release. It was a bottling of cask 15/10 (the tenth cask we filled) and we were thrilled to see such a positive response to the bottling which sold out in under 30 minutes. What’s on the horizon for the next 10 years? Anything you’re particularly looking forward to? Our distillery is still young and at the beginning of an exciting growth phase. With new team members bringing great experience and fresh energy to the wider team plus a site expansion now under way, we have a solid long-term plan and there’s lots of exciting developments in the pipeline. With our products now in over 25 countries, and counting, over the next ten years I hope to see our brands continue their expansion globally, entering new markets and building a growing global community of Glasgow Distillery enthusiasts who enjoy the authenticity and transparency that our brands offer.
What’s the one dram you couldn’t live without?
The whisky that started it all, Glasgow 1770 The Original. The Original is initially matured in firstfill bourbon before a finish in virgin oak. An incredibly well rounded, delicious and refreshing whisky that will always hold a special place in my heart.
What about outside of single malt, what other spirits do you produce and how should they be best served to customers?
Our Blended Malt, Malt Riot is the perfect backbar blended malt pour – easy drinking and well priced for the on-trade. I particularly like it within a whisky sour. G52 Botanical Vodka is a range of naturally flavoured vodka which we distil. The Fresh Citrus version makes a great highball with soda water or tonic. The Rich Coffee expression is perfect at the heart of an espresso martini. Makar Gin is the first produce we launched and is the first ever gin to come from Glasgow. Juniper-forward and bold, the Original Dry flagship expression is great within a martini or a classic G&T garnished with a fine slice of mild green chilli pepper. And, we produce a range of rums, too. Banditti Club Glasgow Spiced Rum is our core range expression is work great within a ginger beer highball with fresh lime or mixed into a variety of cocktails such as a mai tai. Despite being a small distillery with only 16 staff, we’re proud to make a broad range of spirits and offer our on-trade customers a portfolio of authentically Glasgowmade products.

Our whiskey wouldn’t be what it is without Jack Daniel’s mash recipe. He found the perfect mix of corn, rye, and barley and we haven’t changed it since.
04/ CHARCOAL MELLOWING MELLOWED DROP BY DROP
We let our whiskey slowly drip through 10 of hard maple sugar charcoal so it comes out with its distinctive smoothness. It’s a costly, time-consuming process, and if it sounds extravagant, well, it is.
