Top Tips to Get Started
1. Start with veggies (especially greens) - Babies know sweet tastes from milk, so veggies help them try new flavours.
The first spoonfuls or handfuls of food are an exciting milestone, but many parents find it daunting. Using simple ingredients from Dunnes Stores, let’s make weaning easy and give you the confidence to get started.
When to Start
Guidelines recommend starting solids at around 6 months with breastmilk or formula. To start weaning, your baby should show all three signs:
• Sitting in a highchair unsupported with good neck strength.
• No longer pushing food out with their tongue.
• Able to pick up food and bring it to their mouth independently.
2. Small bites slowly - Begin with 1 meal a day at 6 months, building to 3 by 9 months.
3. Trust signals - Babies know when they are hungry or full. Let them lead.
4. Babies thrive on routine - Regular mealtimes make feeding and sleeping easier.
5. Use the squash test - Food should squash easily between finger and thumb.
6. Have patience - Appetite varies daily. As long as nappies are wet/dirty, weight is steady and baby is thriving, you are both doing great.
