Romnes Terrace: HUD IAH Competition

This project was my group’s submission for the Housing and Urban Development (HUD) Innovation in Affordable Housing (IAH) student design and planning competition, which earned us an honor of semifinalist. The existing building houses 169 apartment units, and the prompt was to increase the density in a way that reconnects the street grid of the surrounding neighborhood of Bay Creek in Madison, Wisconsin. This project has 224 units spread across a main apartment building with 182 units, 31 townhomes, and 11 single-family homes, so it more than makes up for the 169

units lost in the demolition of the existing building. The main apartment building is carved into the landscape, so even though it is five stories total, it never appears to be more than three stories at any given point. The main apartment building is faced with dark metal, limestone, and wood shingles, which is a reference to the dark shingles of the existing building.

The main draw to the project was the inclusion of a LIVING LAB, which takes the research I have been a part of, including Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s discovery, and implements it into apartments so residents can be monitors in their homes.

To maximize best use of the site, the building is partially built into the hill on the northern end of the site. The building then terraces up the hill so it never appears to be more than 3 stories at any given point.

The Berkeley Apartments at New Hampshire and 11th

This project, sited in Lawrence, Kansas, is an apartment building that replaces a currently vacant lot one block away from Massachusetts Street, the main street in Lawrence. The building features adequate off-street parking in an aboveground parking garage, five ground-floor commercial spaces, and 55 residential units spread between one- and two-bedroom units. This apartment building is mostly geared towards college students, so one- and two-bedroom units make the most sense, as opposed to units with more bedrooms that would be more suitable for families. The architecture of the

building is also based on hexagons, which add visual interest to the exterior of the building while also making the interior unique. Even with this unique design, wayfinding is still easy, as that was a priority in the design process. There are plenty of study and community spaces on each floor as well, and the roof on the thrid floor is accessible for a green roof and outdoor garden space. The main entrance ot the apartment building is smartly highlighted in red steel, contrasting with the brick of the rest of the building, which immediately tells residents and visitors where to go.

The Wichita Air Capital Museum

This project, sited in Wichita, Kansas, updates and completely transforms an existing aviation museum that sits on the site, the Kansas Aviation Museum. The existing museum sits in an old building that, while beautiful, is not suited to host a modern aviation museum. Wichita has long been known as the Air Capital of the United States because of its long-running history with such companies as Cessna and Beechcraft being founded in the city. This museum repsects that illustrious history while also providing a modern space for a modern industry.

This project hosts two separate hangars flanking a main

lobby and education space, much like how a plane body is flanked by two wings. There are fifteen unique aircrafts within the hangars, many with connections to Wichita and Kansas.

The windows looking into the hangars create a sweeping motion towards the main space, both highlighting the main space and mimicking a plane taking off and landing. The main entrance is also obviously highlighted by a huge glass facade and a distinctive corner, allowing the building to come to a point and elegantly touch the sky. This is one of my favorite projects largely because of the materiality.

Hillside Mixed Use Residential Project and Complete Street

This project, sited in Rosedale, Kansas, a suburb of Kansas City, addresses the needs of the existing community surrounding it. Rosedale is a underserved area, with the nearest grocery store 1.2 miles away, the nearest school or public library 2.2 miles away, and the nearest hospital or clinic 4.6 miles away. Needless to say, this community’s needs are not being met, so the goal of this project is to meet the needs of Rosedale, Kansas while also adding density and the feeling of a walkable community along the new Complete Street down Miriam Lane. Speaking of the Complete Street, I

closed a couple access roads into pedestrian-only to create a green corridor on the east side of my project, connecting green space to the north with green space to the south. I took Miriam Lane down to a two-lane road with a median, giving more room to pedestrians and bicyclists while also reinserting a bus line to Miriam Lane for the first time in over 20 years.

There are new bus stop cutouts as well, and the intersection of Miriam Lane and Dodson Avenue has been raised to prioritize pedestrians and force cars to slow down when they go over it.

This project was a group project with 7 other students and myself, where we created these concrete forms using wood, rubber roof lining, and fabric. There were many iterations including embedding glass and beehive holes into the concrete, but this final product came about to show the difference between the rigidity of the concrete and the light, flowiness of the fabric. This project also involved

installing the panels, which was a whole process in itself.

We cut steel beams, bored holes into each of them, poured the concrete foundation, drilled the steel beams into the concrete foundation and into the building, and finally hung the 36 concrete panels on the steel beams. This was a very fun project and showed me the value of hard work, time management, budget, construction, and even some welding.

The Whooping Crane (Grus americana) is the largest bird in North America, with a height of around five feet. It is also endangered, having decreased from a pre-European population of 16,000 to a present day population of 800 birds, a mind-boggling 95% loss in population. 95%, a piece for the Spencer Museum’s 2020 Backyard Bash: Conference of the Birds, brings awareness to that great loss through its form, which is a 5% slice of a whooping crane nest within a nest of rocks. The 5% slice was created using found materials such as grasses and mud, and was created in a similar way and scale to how a real whooping

crane nest would appear. The remaining 95% of the nest was created using found rocks which were laid on the “grave” as memorial stones, a common practice in many cultures around the globe. The piece, which sits low to the ground in Marvin Grove, allows for a unique experience of stumbling upon, much as visitors are likely to stumble upon the shocking statistic that is the 95% loss. Overall, 95% provides a sobering look into human interaction with the world around us, and forces visitors to consider their impact on that world, which is necessary now more than ever if we want to save such species as the whooping crane.
