Wine: Sparkling Wine - BIRD IN HAND Sparkling Pinot Noir Rose - Australia Martello - The Governor of Jersey, General Sir Henry Seymour Conway, decided to build 30 round towers to protect the island’s coastline. The inspiration for these towers came from an ancient stone tower in the Bay of Martella in Corsica which held out against a British naval attack. They were round as this shape was regarded as stronger than square ones. The only square tower to be built in Jersey was Seymour Tower. It would take the British Navy 16 years to realize their defensive value and begin to construct Martello Towers along the south coast of England. However Jersey’s round towers are unique as unlike their English counterparts they have a more elegant design with tall tapering walls. In addition, they are generally constructed of local granite and have mâchicolations- projecting beak like structures high up on the towers and walls) allowing the defenders to protect the base of the tower.

Grosnez - The ancient landmark of Grosnez Castle is to be found in the St. Ouen area of western Jersey, where it enjoys a cliff-top setting. Constructed using locally quarried granite, Grosnez Castle is owned and maintained by the Jersey Heritage Trust and is next to the ceremonial rock, Le Pinacle, which towers around 200 metres / 656 feet in height and has been a place of worship for literally thousands of years.

Samarès - The Manor and Botanic Gardens are privately owned by Seigneur de Samarès, Vincent Obbard. They are a development of gardens created in the 1920s by Sir James Knott. The gardens are diverse in style, extensive, tranquil and peaceful including a renowned herb garden and Japanese garden. The manor house and a rural life museum are open to the public.

Seymour - Seymour Tower is a coastal defence tower built on a rocky tidal island called L’Avarison, located 2 km (1.25 miles) east of the shoreline of Jersey. One can reach it on foot during low tide, but one must take care when walking to or from the tower as the tide comes in very quickly. The tower was constructed in 1782 following the Battle of Jersey (January 6, 1781), and is one of thirty coastal towers that Conway planned to build. Only 23 towers were built, and Seymour is the only one that is square-shaped rather than round.

La Corbière - Regularly photographed by tourists, La Corbière Lighthouse stands close to St. Brelade’s Bay and is of great historical significance, being Britain’s very first lighthouse built with reinforced concrete. Completed in the 1870s, La Corbière Lighthouse remains in almost pristine condition and became fully automated some 100 years later. The landmark lighthouse measures almost 20 metres / 66 feet in height and its strong beams can reach approximately 59 km / 18 miles on a clear night.

Rocco Tower - La Rocco Tower stands towards the southern end of St Ouen’s Bay. There is a large rock, whose name is almost certainly derived from Rocque-hou, meaning rocky island, and between 1796 and 1800 a round tower was built on it as part of the island’s defences against the French. It was severely damaged during or shortly after World War Two, but not through its use as a target for German gunnery practice, as is commonly believed. In the 1970s public demand, orchestrated by the then Rector of St John, the Rev Peter Manton, led to the States of Jersey deciding to repair and restore the tower.

About The Works A ‘cabinet of curious comestibles’, The Works, is a Jersey pantry, bakery and creamery combined: the first of its kind in Jersey and opened just over 2 years ago. The artisan business run by Laura and Justin Pledger is housed at 2 Gorey Hill, St Martin and is a member of the Feast family. It stocks an exceptional array of handmade condiments, farmhouse cheeses, olive oils, truffles, pâtés, hand-made pasties and cakes, coffee, tea and much more. The concept of this quirky business has been lovingly created and developed to make a boutique shop a great source of delicious food and great experiences bringing together farmers, fishermen, chefs and artisans from near and far.
