INSIDER SPOTLIGHT
Reflecting Dunedin’s rich Scottish heritage, the name (pronounced dun-EE-din) originates from “Dun Eideann”— Scottish Gaelic for Edinburgh, the capital of Scotland.
Dunedin, Florida is the sister city to Stirling, Scotland and Summerside, Prince Edward Island, Canada. Dunedin’s bagpipe band, comprised of volunteers, are two-time World Champions of the World Pipe Band Championship in Glasgow, Scotland. Check out the piper performing during sunset on the Downtown Dunedin Pier.
HISTORY COMES ALIVE
Catch the wistful melody of bagpipes. Revel in the sea’s delights. Encounter locals attired in tartan and kilts. From your first visit to Dunedin, you’ll appreciate the city’s respect for those who came before.
FROM SEAFARING TO CITRUS
Founded by Scottish merchants
John Douglas and James Somerville in 1878, Dunedin embraces its maritime and commercial ancestry. Early on, Dunedin became one of Florida’s chief seaports and trading centers; providing harborage to the schooners and sloops that transported much of the area’s cotton and citrus. A.L. Skinner, a town settler, created a citrus empire focused on both citrus production and mechanization of the industry. First inventing early processing machinery, Skinner went on to create orange juice concentrate marking Dunedin as the birthplace of today’s frozen orange juice. With advancing transportation methods, the Orange Belt Railway replaced sailing vessels carrying citrus, vegetables, and passengers.
SAILING IS IN OUR BLOOD
Incorporated as a city in 1899, Dunedin’s love of boating continued to grow. The Dunedin Boat Club, located at the downtown marina, is one of Florida’s oldest sailing clubs. Established in 1929, the Boat Club encourages boating, sailing and yachting for pleasure and competition—hosting both the Dunedin Youth Sailing Association and the Dunedin Cup Regatta. Stroll near the marina most any day and
you’ll catch a glimpse of sailboats skimming along St Joseph Sound with their sails unfurled.
UNCOVERING A (NOT-SO) HIDDEN GEM
Sparkling in St. Joseph Sound, just off the shoreline of downtown, is Caladesi Island State Park. Originally settled by Henry Scharrer in the 1880s, the island drew many notables to Dunedin including Abraham Lincoln’s son Robert and Pulitzer Prize-winning author Carl Sandberg. Today, Caladesi Island’s unspoiled representation of Florida’s ecological past continues to be accessible only by water.
UPHOLDING TRADITION WITH PRIDE
In 1964, the city of Dunedin invited Stirling, Scotland to become a sister city, creating an exchange of ideas, culture and good will between the two communities. Dunedin takes great pride in its heritage, supporting civic groups such as the Dunedin Scottish Arts Foundation, the Scottish American Society of Dunedin, and the Dunedin New World Celts. Stroll the streets of Dunedin, many with Scottish names, and you’ll hear bagpipes playing, encounter locals in tartan kilts and yes, even hear a Gaelic accent here and there.
