GOODWIN Good afternoon everyone, and welcome back to Tannadice!

incredible. But we have to believe that we’re capable of winning the game.

We are going through probably the toughest period that I’ve experienced in my time as United manager. Over the last couple of years prior to this one we’ve enjoyed some good success.

We didn’t do ourselves justice at Fir Park a couple of months ago and the second half was a lot better from us - we have to make sure that we start this game the way that we did the second 45 down there.

We’ve shown up to now that we’re capable of being a good team but it’s my job to reflect on results and look back on the reasons for why we maybe haven’t got the wins that we’ve desperately wanted. Supporters want to see their team winning games of football and sometimes they don’t really care how that happens.

If there’s one section of the club where the finger cannot be pointed, it’s at the supporters. They’ve turned out in great numbers, supported the team brilliantly both home and away and they’ve been brilliant with me in the two and a half years that I’ve been here - we owe them a lot.

I firmly believe in the group that we’ve put together.

They’ve shown numerous times already this season what a good team they’re capable of being.

It’s time that we repaid the faith that they’ve shown in us with a really good performance at the weekend.

From a discussion in Frew’s Bar eight years ago, the Dundee United Supporters’ Foundation has come a long way.

Since its launch in 2017, as a fan-led notfor-profit supporters’ organisation, the DUSF has consistently delivered financial assistance to Dundee United Football Club and has served as a vital conduit for ensuring that the voices of supporters are acknowledged at the club’s board and executive team level.

OUR MAIN ACHIEVEMENTS

It was established with a clear vision: to ensure Dundee United remains a thriving, community-focused football club for generations to come, with fans having a meaningful influence on its direction.

OUR MAIN AIMS: • To contribute to the success, financial security, and stability of DUFC, to provide a regular financial contribution to assist the Club and to support activities which will ensure future success and stability.

• To strengthen the relationship between the Club and its supporters.

• To be the vehicle through which the supporters can be actively involved in managing any projects which DUSF funds, and through which they have a representative and democratic voice to manage these projects.

• To collaborate with the club to jointly promote the Foundation, by actively

Here are just a few of the significant achievements: Transforming Foundation Park (formerly Gussie Park): DUSF members have collectively invested over £559,000 in the redevelopment of Foundation Park. This monumental effort has provided: • A new FIFA-approved playing surface.

• Improved spectator areas and perimeter fencing • New UEFA-approved floodlighting • Upgraded changing rooms and toilets • A 220-seater spectator stand And most recently, on 1st July 2025, DUSF members voted to provide £167,671 for additional improvements, including a new gym, catering kiosk, modular buildings, and Hudl performance analysis software for the Academy. This vital investment not only strengthens the club’s player development pathway but also allows the club to reallocate resources to the firstteam budget.

• Crucial Financial Support during COVID-19: During the challenging times of the pandemic, DUSF members rallied, providing £100,000 in direct financial aid to the club, helping to ensure its stability when it was most needed.

• Protecting Fan Investment: A legal agreement was signed between DUSF and DUFC to safeguard Foundation members’ investment, a testament to the trust and collaboration built. The renaming of Gussie Park to Foundation Park is a lasting tribute to the collective contributions of DUSF members.

Total Contributions Exceeding £704,000: In total, the DUSF has donated more than £704,000 to Dundee United FC, fans’ projects, and local charities, highlighting the wide-ranging impact of the Foundation.

• Strengthening Fan Voice and Engagement: The DUSF serves as a crucial link between the supporters and the club, ensuring members’ views are represented. The club has committed to attending two DUSF Membership meetings each season, fostering ongoing dialogue directly with members.

Gothenburg home 1987 for the experience, but more recently, 2010 cup final. Countless derbies at Dens over the years but too many victories to recall them all!

FAVOURITE UNITED PLAYER OF ALL TIME?

Paul Sturrock. His ability to go past full backs with ease, right foot, left foot, goals….Luggy had it all.

WHY SHOULD SOMEONE CONSIDER JOINING? If you can afford it, if you love your club then why not? The money goes to benefit the club, fans and non-first team players and it is imperative that we grow the foundation pot for whatever future projects we could support.

MOST FUN OR EMBARRASSING MOMENT AT A MATCH? Most fun would be either of the 6-2 derby wins, growing up with European football on school nights sat on the wall in the old George Fox stand, the Ciftci win at Ibrox, following United to Athens, Moscow, Wroclaw, Luxembourg, Vienna and actually too many to choose from.

Following United has given more highs and good times and long may this continue.

I felt I wanted to add a contribution at a time when I felt our owners were taking our club, my club, down an uncertain path. I wanted to make a contribution to help the club and having seen what Hearts’ foundation achieved, I hoped we could grow our Foundation for the benefit 17

Welcome to

MOTHERWELL

The Steelmen arrive at Tannadice in a rich vein of form which sees them on an unbeaten run of six matches, including clean sheets in each of their last four, since their League Cup semi-final defeat to St Mirren last month.

Currently flying high in third place, The Steelmen strolled the reverse fixture 2-0 back in October and have lost just one of our previous seven encounters.

The 43-year-old Dane was a centre half during his playing days, turning out for Holstebro, Silkeborg and Turkish side Kasimpaşa before he won the League One title with Norwich City in 2010. Moving back home, spells at Vejle and Esbjerg preceded his first player/ assistant manager role at Skive.

Similar roles followed at Thisted and Vendsyssel before he was promoted to manager of the latter in May 2018.

THE MANAGER Jens Berthel Askou

Askou moved to the Faroe Islands a year later, going on to win the double with HB Tórshavn and collecting the Manager of the Year award. Stints in charge at Horsens and IFK Göteborg followed before he reverted back to an assistant role at both Sparta Prague and FC København.

Fiercely ambitious and with a track record of introducing youth players into first team football, Askou’s versatility in both formation and style of play, coupled with results thus far, has rewarded the Motherwell board for its bold appointment in the summer.

Austrian midfielder has been a regular in the side since his arrival from Rheindorf Altach. Having penned a two-year deal in the summer, the 25-year-old former U21 international scored twice during ’Well’s run to the League Cup semi-final.

set Scottish football alight during the 2021/22 campaign with his performances and 13 league goals for Ross County. The 28-year-old Grenada international returns to Scotland after three seasons with Belgian side KAS Eupen.

Having spent last season at Mechelen, Celtic defender is again on loan away from Parkhead. The six clean sheets kept during his 12 appearances highlights his value to the side.

APOSTOLOS STAMATELOPOULOS The 26-year-old striker penned a three-and-a-half-year deal in the summer of 2024 just weeks after making his debut for Australia in a World Cup qualifying rout of Palestine.

Having previously featured for Adelaide United, Western United and Newcastle Jets in Australia, as well as Greek sides Rodos and Ioannina, he notched his first brace in Scottish football during ’Well’s 4-3 victory over ourselves at Fir Park a year ago this weekend.

Blessed with pace and a penaltybox instinct, his appearances were restricted by injury last term but five goals from 13 (plus three substitute) appearances hinted at his potential — and this season has seen him ripple the net on seven occasions.

WILLIE PETTIGREW Willie Pettigrew is an honorary member of the Dundee United Supporters’ Foundation and remains actively involved with the Well Society, Motherwell’s fan ownership group.

His connection to both clubs and commitment to supporting the fan community off the pitch makes him a perfect figure to feature in this Foundation Day programme.

A total of 54 players have worn the colours of both United and Motherwell, but few Arabs would question the assertion that the one who left the greatest legacy was Willie Pettigrew.

His Tannadice tenure may have been relatively brief, but the striker’s contribution to United’s cause cannot be over-estimated.

Born in Motherwell in 1953, Willie became a Scottish Schools internationalist which led to him being signed by Hibernian. But he never made the first team and was playing for junior club East Kilbride Thistle when Motherwell signed him in 1972.

A natural goalscorer, he had the invaluable knack of being in the right place at the right time, often squeezing the ball home from positions that seemed to offer no opportunity to do so. He was the leading

scorer in Scotland in seasons 74/75 and 75/76, which – at the age of 22 – earned him a call-up from Scotland boss Willie Ormond. He took just 90 seconds of his debut to find the net for what proved to be the winner against Switzerland and he won a further four full caps, plus two Scottish League caps.

In the seasons which followed the Motherwell team went into decline, culminating in relegation in 1979, and that provided the opportunity for Jim McLean to add one of the final two pieces to the jigsaw as he built a United team at last capable of capturing a major trophy.

Willie Pettigrew had built a solid reputation, scoring 102 goals in 226 appearances for Motherwell, and McLean signed the striker for United’s then record fee of £100,000. That record would last for just three months, because Eamonn Bannon followed from Chelsea for £60,000 more – then the record fee paid by any Scottish club! The jigsaw was then complete, and it was no coincidence that within weeks United beat Aberdeen to win the Scottish League Cup. Willie demonstrated that he was a big occasion player by firing the Tangerines ahead with

a shot on the turn after 15 minutes and midway through the second half he rose to nod in the second from a Paul Sturrock cross. That the long wait for silverware was finally over was confirmed when ‘Luggy’ added a late third himself.

A year later Willie collected another Scottish League Cup winner’s medal against Dundee, but his most notable display in a United jersey occurred against the same opposition the following month, as the striker hit four goals in a 5-1 Scottish Cup derby drubbing at Tannadice in January 1980.

In that first season Willie scored 22 times in total and he earned cult status among Arabs with his 36 goals in a total of 91 appearances for United.

The only surprise was that he failed to add to his cap total while with the club and after three years he left to join Hearts along with Derek Addison, for a joint fee of £120,000 in

September 1982.

Though just about to turn 29, United had seen the best of him, but he remained at Tynecastle for almost two and a half years before joining Morton, ending his career with Hamilton Accies in 1985.

Reflecting proudly on his times in tangerine, Willie commented: “I arrived at the start of the Tannadice revolution as the club started to win things. It was great to play in two League Cup-winning teams and add club honours to the international caps I won with Motherwell. Not only that, but it afforded me the opportunity to play alongside so many talented players and sample the European stage. Jim McLean bought me to score goals and I feel I did that in the two and a bit seasons, which ranked as the most memorable of my career.”

It should be said they also rank pretty highly in the memories of all Arabs privileged to watch him!

Not an issue by either club, but The National Programme was universally available, published by Henry Munro, who were responsible for programmes throughout Scotland.

Certainly, it was this advertising agency that was responsible for the only season (1933–34) in which United’s issue is confirmed as existing.

So, whether the National issue was on sale at Tannadice on that February afternoon cannot be readily ascertained, given it was 86 years ago.

What is known is that the ‘Warning to ‘Well’ ahead of their Tannadice visit materialised as the Steelmen displaying all their mettle by cruising to a 5–1 win in front of 10,436 fans.

famously scored a hat-trick for Scotland in his only international appearance!

He also scored a barrowload of goals in a distinguished career with the highly successful East Fife side of the late 40s and early 50s.

Unfortunately, the input of both these high-profile strikers was brief, with both released after a handful of appearances for United. As far as is known, no programme exists for the return match at Fir Park, and encouragingly Willie McFadyen’s men put up a better showing in the league clash two months later.

Some 14 years elapsed before the next meeting and, by that time, programmes had become part of the matchday experience following their introduction in 1947. From the large-size issue in the first season, a smaller A5 had become the norm in season 1947/48 and prevailed until 1960.

Only minor changes to the cover design took place, and the one in vogue in these two Motherwell issues had been introduced in 1950, enduring until 1956.

Comprising eight pages, two and a half contained editorial.

In the case of the opening match of the season for the League Cup tie, the Editor questioned, “Will Our Luck Change” after a fifth-place finish the previous season. A list of the new players showed sweeping changes in personnel.

One of the newcomers was Albert Juilessen, who was a scoring ace during the war and returned to Tannadice after spells with Dundee, Everton, and Huddersfield. Another famous name in the United line-up was Henry Morris, who

United atoned for the two League Cup defeats when the Fir Parkers arrived at Tannadice two months later, with Frank Quinn scoring the only goal of the game as United chalked up what was only the second win of the season, ending a run of six games without a victory.

Prophetically, “There is promise” was the headline in the programme, and for once that proved true — though it was one of the few highlights in an otherwise forgettable season.

A brief note on the only Motherwell issue before 1960: it marked United’s heaviest ever defeat. After Andy Tait put United ahead in the first minute, Division B champions Motherwell stormed back to score 12 goals!

Referring to that mammoth defeat, the following programme for Cowdenbeath’s visit stated: “We know it is a hard job to explain away a… but never a 2–1 defeat, but the Editor of the day gave a good shot at it! We freely admit that the better team won but never to anything like an eleven-goal margin. We got every bad break going.”

REMEMBERING

GARY KIRK 1950-2025

Everyone at Dundee United Football Club was deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Gary Kirk.

A warm, infectious character, Gary was a popular and highly respected coach at Tannadice during the stewardship of Craig Levein and Peter Houston between 2006 and 2013.

An important member of the backroom team, Gary played his part in guiding the club to Scottish Cup glory in 2010, and his energy and enthusiasm were at the heart of the celebrations that followed that unforgettable triumph.

Well known and admired acros s Scottish football, Gary also brought his experience and passion to roles with Cowdenbeath whom he had a spell managing, Raith Rovers, and Heart of Midlothian.

Gary died just days after being appointed as Dunfermline’s head scout, passing away while attending a match in England last month.

The sympathies of everyone at Dundee United are with Gary’s wife, Lynn, and his family and friends at this very difficult time.

13 DECEMBER 1913 – Dundee Hibs 1-1 Albion Rovers | Qualifying Cup (Final) Some 11,000 saw Rovers take the lead during an opening spell in which Manager Pat Teilly reckoned his troops were suffering stage fright.

Fortunately, they rallied and Bill Brown volleyed in the equaliser. That was how it finished, necessitating a replay at Easter Road seven days later.

A disappointing 5,000 again saw Coatbridge take the lead, but Willie Linn levelled within a minute. No provision had been made for extra-time, so two days later the clubs met again at Tynecastle, two days after Christmas.

Given it was the club’s fourth successive away game, the United support was greatly reduced, and just 2,000 watched Rovers run out comfortable 3-0 winners.

1930 – Dunfermline 4-4 United | League (Division Two) What this top-of-the-table clash lacked in quality, it certainly didn’t in goals, as eight were shared between the sides! Jim Williamson gave United the lead on seven minutes, but within a minute Howieson equalised.

Shortly afterwards, Jackie Kay put the visitors back in front. Rarity replied for the Pars before a McAndrew penalty put

the home side ahead for the first time, immediately on the restart. Jimmy Cameron cancelled that out and Coupar saved Kay’s penalty to retain parity. However, he was beaten by Cameron, who put United back in front, but Paterson salvaged a point with a last-minute leveller. 1

1947 – Ayr Utd 3-3 United | League (B Division)

Only a collapse by the Honest Men enabled

United to snatch a point.

Earlier, despite conceding three goals, visiting keeper John Boyd came to the rescue repeatedly as the home forwards ran riot. He couldn’t prevent John White opening the scoring after 21 minutes, and although Peter McKay cancelled that out eight minutes later, counters from Alex Beattie and White again saw United go two down. Malcolm Sinclair reduced the arrears four minutes after the restart and McKay restored parity five minutes from the end, almost snatching a winner a minute later — which would have been a monumental steal!

1952 – United 4-1 Forfar Athletic | League (B Division)

“Frankie has them Frankled” was the Sunday Post headline for his part in this comfortable victory. For the third time that season, Frank Quinn scored direct from a corner, taking full

advantage of the sleet and slippery conditions with a low drive that screwed inside the near post. Prior to that 63rdminute effort, Jim Temple opened the scoring after 16 minutes, with Andy Dunsmore’s 30-yarder crashing in on 33 minutes — the goal of the game.

Forfar pulled one back during a brief spell at the start of the second half, Willie Brown reduced the arrears ten minutes after the restart, and following Quinn’s corner, trialist Gerry Tracey from Ardeer Thistle completed the scoring.

1986 – Clydebank 1-2 United | League (Premier Division) Fixtures after European trips are always tough, and the visit to Kilbowie was no different after a goalless draw at Hajduk Split. Iain Ferguson nearly gave United an early lead with a lob over the bar.

The Bankies responded, with Billy Thomson making sharp saves against Christie, Gordon, and Grant. United took the lead when Kevin Gallacher’s cross found Eamonn Bannon, who powered a header past Gallacher. A John Clark error allowed Gordon to equalise. Five minutes into the second half, Ian Redford’s ball to Jim McInally led to a blocked shot, but Ferguson

reacted quickly to score the winner.

2008 – United 2-2 Rangers | League (SPL) A brilliant second-half fight-back earned United a deserved draw.

Lee Wilkie and Warren Feeney overturned Kris Boyd’s early opener, but substitute Kyle Lafferty struck late to equalise. At half-time, Craig Levein’s team-talk sparked a swift response: within five minutes, Paul Dixon’s cross found Wilkie to level. Soon after, Dixon combined with Craig Conway again, Feeney smashing home to put United ahead.

Lafferty restored parity on 76 minutes from Nacho Novo’s pass. David Robertson had a late 25yard chance, but United held on for a well-earned point.
