Dundalk FC look to new beginning under Stephen Kenny By Eunan Whyte

Dundalk FC’s efforts to re-establish the club as a force in Irish football once again took another important step with the unveiling of a new manager on Thursday. Stephen Kenny was officially confirmed as the new boss at a press conference in Oriel Park and the former Shamrock Rovers, Bohemians and Derry City manager was handed a two-year contract. The club haven’t enjoyed the best of times over the past number of years, but changes at boardroom level during the past year have created a sense of optimism and that has been added to by the appointment of one of the country’s most respected managers. Kenny, admitted that he was under no illusions about the size of the task facing him, but said that the prospect of working with passionate supporters was one of the reasons why he was attracted to the job. “Dundalk has a great tradition as a club and it is a real football town. There is a passionate support base and that was one of the things that attracted me. I believe that if you are any way successful, the

supporters will get behind you. “I know from managing Bohemians in the 2002 FAI Cup Final that there is a great passion for Dundalk as they had huge numbers out that day. “There have been some barren times since then but my job is to get the club back to the top and hope that people enjoy coming to watch the team play”, added Kenny who was also encouraged by the attitude of the board. “From speaking to the likes of Ciaran Bond, Andy Connolly and Paul Johnston,

it is clear that they have a great passion and a vision for the club and I was really impressed by that.”, revealed the manager, who is looking forward to getting down to work. “The good thing is that I am starting with a blank canvas and it really is a new beginning for everyone. We are under no illusions that it is going to take a lot of hard work and we will be looking to get players who are willing to work and are hungry to play for such a great club”, he added.
