THE DEPARTMENT of Justice have emailed local representatives in an effort to ensure the local community have accurate information about the emergency accommodation in the former St. Joseph’s female orphanage and Industrial School and St. Malachy’s Convent at Seatown Place, Dundalk. The building which has undergone renovations in recent months will be used to accommodate up to 250 Ukrainian refugees who have left their country due to the ongoing war.
There have been a number of protests outside the former orphanage and a number of rumours about who exactly would end up in the building which is located beside St Vincent’s Secondary school. However an email sent out to local councillors, TD’s and Senators this week has attempted to quell those rumours by giving what they describe as ‘accurate information’ about the accommodation of people fleeing the war in Ukraine.

Ó Murchú to raise McNeela pension issue in Dáil
THE CASE of Dundalk father John McNeela, whose son died on UN duty in Lebanon in 1989, will be raised by Louth TD Ruairí Ó Murchú in Leinster House when the Dáil returns from recess this week.
Michael McNeela was just 21 when he was killed in the Lebanon in 1989 while on his second tour of duty for the UN.
His father, John McNeela who is 84, went public last week and revealed that the refusal by the Defence Department to allow him to continue to collect the small monthly allowance, given to his late wife, Kathleen, under the Army Pensions Act, left him ‘poor’.
Tanaiste and Minister for Defence Simon Harris said the legislation does not provide for the transfer of the pension, worth just €342 per month, to Mr McNeela.
The Department of Defence said, in re-
sponse to queries from the media about the case, that secretarygeneral of the Department of Defence would raise this case with the Department of Social Protection ‘to see what other supports may be available to Mr McNeela’.
Deputy Ó Murchú said Mr McNeela has not had any contact from government departments in the week since his case went public.
The TD said: “In the week since Mr McNeela went public about the
situation with the pension, he has not received any communication from any government department, which is disappointing.
“It is clear there is huge public support for him and for the legislation to be changed in order to allow the pension to be transferred to him. It is my intention to bring the case to the Dáil this week and to press the government for a resolution.
“The legislation which governs pensions given to the families of Defence Forces members who are killed on duty, is out of date and needs to be changed and updated.
“The McNeela case is extremely rare and while I have started the process of drafting legislation to amend the anomaly, the government has to make an interim payment for Mr McNeela, as has happened in the past with other uniformed services”.

Castletown Girls ‘Champions School of Sanctuary’ award.
WE are delighted to announce that our school has recently been awarded the title of Champion School of Sanctuary. We are the first school in Dundalk to receive this title. This award recognises our school’s commitment to being a safe, and inclusive place for all.
Throughout our journey to become a Champion School of Sanctuary, we learned what sanctuary means. Our learning helped us reflect on diversity, inclusion, and how we can make everyone in our school feel seen, valued, and safe.
Our pupils developed key intercultural skills such as empathy, tolerance, respect, and adaptability. They explored their own identities and those of others through language, culture, stories, traditions, and history. We held many fun events throughout the
year to ensure all children felt represented and welcomed in our school community. Through assemblies, workshops, projects and guest speakers, we deepened our understanding of the wider world.
On 9th May, a Schools of Sanctuary Monitoring Team visited our school and for an evaluation.
A School of Sanctuary Committee, made up of
hardworking and passionate students, showcased our journey. The Monitoring Team were very impressed, stating that they were incredibly proud of our dedication and hard work in becoming the first Champion School of Sanctuary in Dundalk. The following is a quote from their written report- “This is a truly remarkable achievement and a shin-
ing example for other schools across the region.”
Becoming a Champion School of Sanctuary is a significant milestone for our school community. It marks not just the end of a journey, but the beginning of an ongoing commitment to create a safe and welcoming school environment. We are proud to be a place where everyone belongs.
