Drivers who continue to park in disable bays without valid permits are being hit in the pocket with Gardai stepping up their campaign to penalise culprits. Since Operation Enable was launched in April a total of 50 fines have been handed out for illegal parking in disabled bays. A local disability activist, Brendan Moore, has welcomed the progress made by Gardaí in relation to Operation Enable which was launched with Gardaí vowing to issue a zero-tolerance approach with regards to the abuse of parking in disabled bays across the county. National award for Castletown Girls

Castletown Girls National School ended their school year in style as they were named national winners in the RSA Safe Cross Code Dance Competition. The Fifth Class girls under the supervision of teacher Ms McMahon directed and performed a short video which included the girls acting out a short drama about the safe cross code through dance and song. Five schools in the country were shortlisted for the prize which included 30 tablets for the school with two of the final five from Co. Louth. Full story on Page 2

Call to back re-opening of school Fianna Fáil TD for Louth Declan Breathnach spoke last week in the Dáil when he raised the issue of getting Faughart National School re-opened. 

“The Education Act makes provision for an existing Patron to transfer patronage to another patron. The school was closed in mid-September 2017 in order to find a solution to the on-going problems relating to management and leadership and the consequent drop in enrolments. “At the time it was said to me

and others that the Church and Department would allow it to be divested in another patronage.

 It has been confirmed to me that the Louth Meath Education Training Board (LMETB) are willing to open the school by September 2018 under their patronage and are waiting for various issues to be ironed out to pave the way for this to happen.

 “Archbishop Martin responded to representations made to him and he stated that he was waiting on clarification on certain

issues from the Department. We all know that the village school is the hub of any community, and it is sad and disappointing that notwithstanding valiant efforts by the parents, families, and community in Faughart, this school remains closed today,” stated Mr Breathnach who explained that the families want to get their children back to school at Faughart.
