Campaign against drink driving

As the festive season approaches An Garda Síochána, the Road Safety Authority and Louth County Council have issued a stark warning to road-users about the consequences of drink-driving. A Pre-Crash Report on Alcohol, which examined Garda forensic investigation files into fatal crashes between 2008 and 2012, showed that alcohol was a factor in 38% of all fatal collisions, claiming the lives of 286 people. 29% of drivers and motorcyclists killed had consumed alcohol. To date this year, 176 people have been killed on Irish roads, an increase of 32 when compared to the same period last year. An Garda Síochána will be increasing the number of Mandatory Alcohol Testing checkpoints in County Louth over the coming weeks on a 24/7 basis.

Dundalk FC now turn the attention to future of pitch By Paul Byrne

Dundalk FC have received the results of a feasibility study from pitch specialists and officials will now make a decision on plans for Oriel Park following their exit from the Europa League. but will not make a final decision on what surface to lay down until after their game with Maccabi Tel Aviv tomorrow evening. According to Martin Connolly, general manager of the club, there has been great debate at boardroom level with regards to what course of action to take regarding the pitch. “We have received the re-

sults from the feasibility study and what we will do next is sit down, look at the study and make an informed decision as to what type of pitch is best for the football club. “I know there has been great debate already as to what surface we should go for but we have to be mindful of the fact that the pitch will not only be used by our senior team but also by our U17, U19 and ladies team. And from next August there will also be an U15 team so there is plenty to consider before any decision is made. With regards to ground development it seems that there will take at least a couple of seasons before the Oriel Park meets

UEFA’s strict ground criteria regulations which have so far prevented the club from holding any European games beyond the second qualifying round stage. According to Martin Dundalk will once again be forced to play their European games elsewhere next season should they progress to the third qualifying round or beyond. “I know that the ground will not be ready for next season with regards to hosting big European games. There is a lot of work to do to bring the stadium up to the required standards and it will be at least two seasons before we are in a position to upgrade the facilities to an acceptable level,” stated Martin.
