No bail for man charged with horror hatchet attack

A 47-YEAR-OLD man has appeared before Dundalk District Court in relation to an incident in Glenwood last Friday when three women were injured after being attacked by a man wielding a hatchet. Patricia ‘Pat’ Muckian (81) suffered severe head trauma, while her sister-in-law Mairead and niece Maria were also injured when a man wellknown to the three allegedly carried out the attack on Friday afternoon.

The three women were enjoying tea and cake to celebrate Mairead Muckian’s 75th birthday in the kitchen of her home in the Glenwood estate in Dundalk.

Pat, who was chairperson of Dundalk Credit Union until 2013, is currently up in

Beaumont Hospital where she is listed as critical.

Mairead and her daughter Marie were treated for less serious injuries in the nearby Louth Hospital on the Dublin Road in Dundalk.

The women’s attacker was arrested at the scene and was being detained at a Garda station in Co Louth under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act, 1984 where he stayed until being brought to Dundalk District Court on Wednesday morning.

47-year-old Nicholas Muckian with an address at Glenwood, Dundalk, is charged with three counts of assault causing harm on Friday May 3rd. Gardai told Dundalk District Court that they were objecting to bail.

No application for bail was made by Nicholas Muckian’s defence solicitor.

Judge Eirinn McKiernan remanded Mr Muckian in custody to appear again on 15 May. She also directed that he receive urgent medical attention and assessment.

‘Best birthday present ever’ for firefighter John Molloy

DUNLEER retained firefighter, John Molloy, has been given the ‘best birthday present ever’ with news at the weekend that he will not have to retire on his sixtieth birthday on May 24.

Mr Molloy, who is the station officer in Dunleer, had feared he had no choice but to retire when he turned 60 in a couple of weeks’ time.

While the government had committed to increasing the mandatory retirement age for retained firefighters to 62, and to enact legislation before the Dáil’s summer recess, Mr Molloy was worried that it would not happen in time for him.

But on Friday evening, the Department of Public Expenditure announced that ‘the necessary legislative provisions can be enacted before the Dáil summer recess, with temporary

Mr Molloy is one of a number of retained firefighters who received word that they could continue past their sixtieth birthday while the legislation is drafted and passed.

His case has been raised numerous times in Leinster House

by Sinn Féin TD Ruairí Ó Murchú, who said he was ‘delighted’ that Mr Molloy would be able to continue in the role for another two years.

The Dundalk TD said: ‘John Molloy had a very simple request: please don’t make me retire while the legislation to increase the mandatory retirement age goes through the Oireachtas.

‘It made no sense for someone of his capabilities, someone who is so instrumental to the running of Dunleer fire station, to be forced to retire when the legislation was within touching distance.

‘I am very glad that the government saw sense and came up with an interim solution for him. It is the best birthday present ever for him’.

Louth incident a stark reminder of the harm out-of-control dogs can cause

LOUTH County Council are reminding dog owners of their legal responsibilities around dog control, following an attack on lambs in the Ravensdale area of north Louth this week.

A number of lambs were killed, and several others seriously injured during the attack by a single pet dog. The incident has been reported to An Garda Síochána.

Louth County Council Dog Warden service attended the scene and have described it as “a direct result of irresponsible dog ownership.”

The local authority recently launched a public appeal to dog owners, highlighting the responsibilities which come with dog ownership.

Along with providing a home for a dog, and being responsible for their welfare, owners are legally responsible for keeping their dog under control, especially when in public, and in areas where other animals and

livestock may be present.

The Department of Rural and Community Development have also launched a major national awareness campaign, as part of a series of measures to improve dog control and welfare across the country.

The campaign entitled – ‘It’s not your dog’s fault, it’s yours’ - is aimed at increasing awareness of the harm that out-ofcontrol dogs can do to people and to livestock.

The goal is to change behaviour and to remind owners that they must always have their dog

under control.

Under the Control of Dogs Act 1986, Local Authorities have responsibility for all operational activities including enforcement matters.

Local Authorities oversee the appointment of dog wardens, provide dog shelters, seize dogs, impose on-the-spot fines and take court proceedings against owners.

Louth County Council dog wardens are proactive in enforcing dog control measures across the county, and the number of Fixed Penalty Notices issued

by the local authority has in recent years been among the highest in the country. Wardens protect the right of the public to be able to walk safely, whether they are walking their own dog on a lead or are just generally out walking.

This includes any public place, whether it is an urban area, a large estate or a quiet country road.

Joe McGuinness, Director of Services at Louth County Council, welcomed the campaign on responsible dog ownership: “This incident reported in north Louth is a stark reminder to all dog owners of the harm that out-of-control dogs can cause. It is important to remember that a family pet can react differently to people, and other animals, when outside the home. Dog owners should be mindful of their responsibilities, ensuring that their dogs are under effectual control at all times.”

Passport delays affecting local holidaymakers working. I think everyone would say that we get a great service with the Oireachtas line.

‘I have questions about overtime.

Whenever there are issues, all resources are brought to bear because we do not want people missing holidays, etc.

‘People are finding that their documents are being uploaded but there seems to be an issue with getting them checked. I do not know if there are

enough checkers.

‘I have also been told that paper applications are taking an incredibly long time - longer than anticipated at this point in time. I know we constantly have this issue but there is a need to streamline the service.

It would be beneficial if the checks to find mistakes, etc., could happen at an earlier stage’.

of people from Louth seeking assistance in getting their passports for holidays.

Hermann to run as a candidate in European elections

By Tamara O’Connell A MAN living in mid-Louth is running as a candidate in the European Parliament election next month.

Hermann Kelly, aged 55, is originally from Derry but is currently living in mid-Louth. He is running as a candidate for the Irish Freedom Party.

The Irish Freedom Party is a nationalist, Euro-sceptic party, according to Hermann who used to teach religion to secondary school students.

“I believe that Irish people can make our own laws. One of our catch cries is ‘House the Irish first’ because we think that it’s not our duty to house the rest of the world,” said Hermann.

“Ordinary Irish people are competing for housing, jobs, health and education services.

This is not about race but what is the advantage of being an Irish citizen?

Hermann added: “Young Irish people are emigrating because they can’t get a house and they don’t see any hope of getting a house.

THE issue of delays in the Passport Service getting through huge numbers of applications is affecting Dundalk-based holidaymakers, the Dáil heard last week.

During the last week of April, the Passport Service received 33,000 applications, Sinn Féin TD Ruairí Ó Murchú told Taoiseach Simon Harris in Leinster House.

Marist 5K run and family fun event launch

SAINT Mary’s College Dundalk are holding their 6th annual 5K Run & Family Fun Event tomorrow (Friday the 10th of May) at 7pm. This is a chipped timed event with a commemorative Marist medal. Every finisher will receive a goody bag and will be entered into our sponsor’s raffle. The first 300 registered will get a bespoke Marist 5K run tshirt and there will also be trophies and cash prizes for the first three finishers in the male & female categories.

Last year we had a large crowd running the event, with nearly 900 participants and this year we hope to break this number again. All these runners also bring along a large number of friends and family to spectate and cheer everyone on. All this means we generally have a huge crowd, well excess of 1,200 people, on the evening around the school with many young kids there to cheer on parents and get involved

Aoibheann’s Pink Tie National Children’s Cancer Charity was set up in 2010 by Mick Rochford and Jimmy Norman after the death of Jimmy’s daughter Aoibheann from a rare type of cancer. She was only 8 years old. At Aoibheann’s funeral the men wore pink ties so the name Aoibheann’s Pink Tie was formed in her memory to remedy the

lack of support to other families on the ward battling cancer. Mick and Jimmy started raising funds for one family at a time gaining huge support over the years to now become the go to children’s charity helping thousands of families over the years with their incredible team proudly supporting every family with a childhood cancer diagnosis. This charity means a huge amount to the college as this charity have been very kind and supportive to one of our students and his family during this difficult time We have also teamed up again with Niall Fergus from Mini Athletics to hold the Mini

Athletics Kids Fun Run which will take place on the night too. The Mini Athletics Kids Fun Run will take place once the 5K run starts, at about 7.05, and will allow kids the chance to participate in a fun run and receive a medal and goodie bag. This is a free event which kids can join on the evening.

Festival, a one-day celebration of Dundalk hitting the town centre on Sunday, May 12th. Following last year’s very

interested in learning more about the town can join a unique Military History Tour of Aiken Barracks; an Archeology Walk of Mount Avenue; or a popular walking tour of Dundalk’s beautiful and ever changing SEEK Murals.

Later, the fun will be focussed on the Market Square where the Carlingford Pipe Band will set the atmosphere for a day of music and entertainment, hosted by LMFM’s Pat O’Shaughnessy.

Birches appeal for support for Tea Day Fundraiser

THE Birches is appealing to the public to support its annual Alzheimer’s Tea Day fundraiser, which takes place this Saturday (May 11th) at its day care centre from 11am to 2pm.

Over the last 30 years, the Tea Day has raised €10 million to help support people living with dementia across Ireland, along with their families and carers. It is estimated that 1,603 people are living with

dementia in Louth.

The North Louth branch of the Alzheimer Society of Ireland (ASI) was set up 27 years ago and has service users ranging in age from their 50s to mid 90s.

In total, it supports approximately 180 people every month.

The Birches day care centre on the Priorland Road operates five days a week and its day centre at Rath Abbey in Grange caters for members from

the Cooley Peninsula on a weekly basis.

The success of its Saturday Social Club has seen the monthly get together (on the third Saturday of the month from 11am - 1pm) move to St. Gerard’s Hall, St. Alphonsus Road.

It also provides Daycare At Home and in addition to providing telephone support to everyone on the waiting list, The Birches also provides a monthly

family support group meeting (on the last Thursday of the month at 7pm).

New era at Dundalk Swimming Pool as enhanced changing facilities and dedicated disabled changing suite launched LOUTH County Council welcomed the official launch of state-of-the-art new facilities at Dundalk Swimming Pool on Tuesday 7th May 2024.

The refurbishment works, which represented a €600,000 investment in upgrading facilities at the swimming pool and leisure complex, involved the installation of new disabled changing areas, lockers, family-friendly changing cubicles, nonslip safety tiles and group changing areas. All areas will be accessible with specifically designed lockers for wheelchair users – which was previously lacking in the facility.

The works were made possible through funding from large-scale sports infrastructure fund under the Department of Tourism, Culture, Arts, Gaeltacht, Sport and Media, and investment by Louth County Council, brings a host of enhancements designed to improve the overall experience of patrons.

The swimming pool is operated and managed by Aura in partnership with Louth County Council.

regional IVF hub at Lourdes Hospital

A LOUTH Labour TD is calling for the Lourdes Hospital in Drogheda to become a regional hub for IVF treatment to address long waiting times for IVF patients living in County Louth and attending the Rotunda Hospital in Dublin.

Deputy Ged Nash TD recently tabled a series of parliamentary questions relating to IVF treatment for Louth patients under the new and very welcome public treatment programme, to the Minister for Health.

Deputy Nash: “I have been contacted by local couples whose wait for an initial appointment at the Rotunda is unacceptably long. I was shocked to learn that patients in Louth are waiting seven months for IVF treatment at the Rotunda Hospital in Dublin, when the HSE officially aims to have IVF referrals seen within six weeks.

“It has been confirmed to me by the RCSI Hospital Group that there are currently 78 people in County Louth who are on the waiting list for IVF treatment in the Rotunda Hospital in Dublin.

The Louth Labour TD: “It seems to me, the answer to these unacceptable delays is to work to establish a regional IVF treatment centre for the North-East at the Lourdes Hospital in Drogheda. If the service is to grow and to meet demand, this is what will need to happen.

“According to the National Women and Infants Health Programme, within the HSE, patients refer to one of the existing six regional IVF hubs should be seen within six weeks but the wait for Louth patients attending the Rotunda is now an average of seven months.

“I acknowledge there are a number of private providers of IVF services. The expense involved had put IVF out of the reach of too many. It is clear in the first year of operation that the six public regional hubs are insufficient to cope with the demand for these services.

“The Lourdes Hospital already has the expertise in obstetrics in place and would in my view be the ideal location to site a seventh regional hub, catering to patients seeking IVF treatment in the North-East.”

“Ribbon Runway” for Breast Cancer an evening of style, solidarity and support for local charity

BREASTCARE by Alison is back once again with the annual “Ribbon Runway” fashion show in aid of the North Louth Hospice.

Taking place at the picturesque Golf Course in Blackrock, Dundalk on Fri, May 17th, this promises to be another amazing ladies’ night out to enjoy this season’s style from local boutiques Sheba, Ozone and Ruby Nu, as well as swimwear from Breastcare by Alison.

Once again, the evening will be hosted

by Caroline McElroy, stylist and presenter.

Cllr Sheridan wants no grass cutting in May LOCAL Councillor John Sheridan has called on local residents to avoid cutting their grass during May to give biodiversity and native Irish honeybees a much needed boost.

“As we all know, the weather during winter and spring this year has been very wet and growth has been slow so far. I have spoken to beekeepers in recent weeks and this bad weather is already impacting the work of native Irish honey bees who should be thriving this time of year.

“Over the past few years “No Mow May” has focussed on what residents can practically do in their own gardens for biodiversity. If people can commit to not cutting their grass during May or even not cutting part of their grass it can be of huge benefit.

One Billion Rising Event in Dundalk next week

WOMEN’S Aid Dundalk is planning to host an upcoming One Billion Rising event which will take place on Thursday, May 16 at the Market Square from 10am.

Women’s Aid Dundalk is aiming to create a vibrant celebration of dance, uniting various local community groups and anyone who wishes to join them.

“One Billion Rising is an international event. It’s a movement highlighting genderbased violence,” said Women’s Aid Dundalk staff member, Sharron McQuaid.

“It’s a gathering featuring an actual One Billion Rising dance.

We are trying to get someone to lead the dance here in Dundalk.”

The dance routine itself features simple, easy-to-follow steps, starting promptly at 10.30am and lasting just the length of a single song.

Following the dance, Women’s Aid Dundalk has speakers lined up. Dundalk FM is also due to do a live show from the Square on the same morning.

Sharron added: “The dance will probably kick off at 10.30am and this will be followed by speakers including Ann Larkin, the manager of Women’s Aid Dundalk and Councillor Paula Butterly.

“Seun Grace Atiroko will also

speak at the event about ‘Akidwa’ which is an organisation for women from abroad, mostly African countries.

“The organisation tries to highlight issues such as female genital mutilation. We have One Billion Rising in Dundalk every year. Last year, it was held in Oriel Park.”

She concluded: “Dundalk FM will also be broadcasting live from the One Billion Rising event this year. We hope to get some good weather and maybe some local schools will come along.

“This is a big thing for us as it’s a serious issue. We are appealing to all community groups to come along and support it.”

Holistic Health Fair in the Carrickdale

THE Carrickdale Hotel plays host on Sunday May 19 to a holistic health fair that will also benefit the North Louth Hospice.

The Bealtaine Holistic Fair, which run from 11am to 6pm, will feature well-known medium Marie Fitzpatrick, who packed out the Waterfront Hall in Belfast recently.

There will be something for everyone on the day, with many local therapists and

traders attending.

The Carrickdale’s Bernish Suite is the location for the Dundalk event, which is being organised by former North Louth resident, and palliative care nurse Nuala McKernan Donnelly.

She said she is delighted to be bringing readings, talks, stalls, therapies and demonstrations to the Carrickdale, but even more delighted that it will also benefit the North

Louth Hospice through a donation from the organisers.

Nuala said: ‘My parents both died from cancer when they were living in Dundalk and the North Louth Hospice provided them both with outstanding care.

‘I was inspired to do nursing and I worked for a time with the palliative care team in Louth. Anyone who knows me knows that I have a passion for oncology and palliative care

and I am still working in that area, in the North’.

Nuala said she is hoping the May 19 event will be fantastic and she is really excited about it. All abuzz as EASON names Mark Phillips as the County Louth spelling bee champion EASON is delighted to announce Mark Phillips as this year’s winner of the County Louth Eason Spelling Bee Final.

Following a tense competition in which he faced nine fellow students, Mark, student at Rampark National School, triumphed in the Louth final by correctly spelling ‘unhabituated’. Mark will now represent Co. Louth in the Provincial Spelling Bee in May. Mark is an avid reader, and Diary Of A Wimpy Kid books are his favourite to read.

Celebrating its 11th year, the Eason Spelling Bee is part of an overall literacy and reading drive to encourage and inspire children to develop their spelling and pronunciation skills. Over the years the competition has helped school children gain a greater appreciation of words and fosters vocabulary growth and self-confidence for children.

Next stop Spain as Majella wins National Skoda Challenge Final SENIOR Service Advisor Majella Gillespie from Western Motors in Drogheda, was at the National Skoda Challenge Final which took place on Saturday 27th of April 2024 in Skoda Training Centre followed by the Awards Ceremony in the Castleknock Hotel.

Majella Gillespie, who won the Skoda Challenge National Champion 2024 and had to complete 5 challenges in order to compete. She now proceeds to the next stage in Seville Spain in 26th - 29th of September 2024 where she will represent Skoda Ireland in the World Finals of the Skoda Challenge. ‘’Majella Gillespie said the Awards dinner and event was fantastic and she was in shock when she was announced at the winner.
