“We love you. We will carry you with us forever. Go now and be at peace. Look after yourselves. You’re together now for always”.

Those were the words of Cian O’Connor son of Mark and Louise O’Connor and brother of Evan as part of his Communion reflection in St Patrick’s Church Dundalk, during the funeral Mass for his parents and brother.

Mark, Louise and Evan O’Connor were found dead at their home in Drumgowna, just outside Stonetown last Monday morning. Robert O’Connor (31) appeared before a special sitting of Drogheda District Court last week and was charged with the murder of his parents and brother.

A hushed silence descended upon the town centre at 11am as the hearses bearing three coffins drove slowly up Clanbrassil St towards St Patrick’s Church. The hearses were flanked by members of the North East Runners, who would later form a guard of honour outside the church. Mark had been a much-valued member of the North East Runners as was seen by the huge turnout from his clubmates. Some of the mourners wore odd socks as requested by the O’Connor family in honour of one of Evan’s ‘individualistic traits’.

Cian began his reflection by thanking everybody for their condolences and well wishes and helping him and his family to get through ‘an extremely difficult time’ in their lives.

“We are all hurting and it is difficult to understand what has happened. It is difficult to comprehend but today is not the day to try. My family would want to remember the good times we all had. I think of the courage my Dad showed when he found out Evan

was autistic. He was working in a factory in town and he took the courageous step to go back and pursue an education and work towards getting a qualification which would later see him become an advocate and a champion for children with special needs.

“I am so glad I got to

spend time with him in Boston when he fulfilled a personal ambition by completing the Boston City Marathon last Easter Sunday. Even if I did walk the legs of him the day before and filled him with beer and too many burgers. I have been told by so many of his North East Runner clubmates that it was never a hard run when Mark was with you. He would chat and encourage whoever he was with every step of the way. He has an amazing Dad who always stood by us all through the worst and best times and I’ve always been so proud of him. In the words of Pink Floyd, I hope you can shine on you crazy diamond.

“My younger brother Evan was a spark of joy whose smile would light up every room he walked into and I adored his long hair and wild beard. Evan loved being in Abacus in Drogheda and the Hub where they became his second family. I’m incredibly grateful for he work they do. He had a block calendar on our kitchen table which he changed the date of every single night at midnight on the dot. Nobody in the house could go to bed until this task was done. At the time when you were tired this could be incredibly frustrating but because of this we stayed awake longer, we chatted more, we laughed more, we shared more. So in his own way with his block calendar, Evan gave us more time together as a family and I am forever grateful for that.

“To my wonderful Mam I loved her dearly. She loved to speak to anyone and genuinely wanted to know about the people she met. Putting them before herself. She grew up in this town.

From Rockmount, Anne St., she spoke fondly of much messing in the Jockeys and the Wee House and then when she went to study in Dublin her kind spirit made her a wonderful caring nurse.

“Singing with her Local Vocals choir group, who have kindly joined us here today, was a wonderful escape for her. She cherished every week’s practise and meeting up with her friends. She was so looking forward to our wedding day and the happiest I think I ever seen her was when she got to see Shauna in her wedding dress. We can-

not replace her love. We will carry her with us on our wedding day forever.

“My parents got married 33 years ago in this church and they were so much in love. You spent your lives looking after us and making us smile. Robert, Shauna and I will miss you so much for the rest of our lives. Don’t worry about us we have each other. We’re well minded. “We love you. We will carry you with us forever. Go now and be at peace. Look after yourselves. You’re together now for always”.

Following a sustained round of applause from those in the church, a recording of Louise singing a beautiful version of Moon River played through the speakers as Cian returned to his seat.

Earlier, Fr Gerry Campbell had led the mass and spoke of the difference Mark, Louise and Evan made to many many people. Nike runners, a Queen record and a cookbook were brought up to the alter by Mark’s sister Anita and nieces Kerry and Una to symbolize his love of running, music and cooking.

For Louise her love of animals and natural caring nature were symbolised with her family members bringing up a picture of a cat, a photograph of Louise in her nurses uniform and also a record of A-Ha, her favourite band.

Evan’s cousins brought up a holiday book and bright odd socks to symbolize his love of holidays and his tendency to wear bright odd coloured socks.

Fr Campbell asked those in the church to keep the O’Connor family in their prayers to help them get over this ‘terrible tragedy’.

“Let us keep Cian in our prayers as well as his fiancee Shauna who has been such a strong support for Cian this week.

Let us also include Robert in our prayers and hope that one day he will find peace. This time last week news filtered through of a terrible family tragedy as we learned about the deaths of Mark, Louise and Evan. They were deeply loved and highly regarded not just in their local community but beyond that as well.

“Mark and Louise had a deep love for one another and an endless love for their son Evan. Mark was a magnificent advocate for children with disabilities and a man of great integrity and great purpose. Running was a way of life for him and like everything he did he ran with determination and discipline. Louise was warm, full of life, musical and caring and compassionate. A wonderful nurse who had so much love to give to her family and friends. Evan brought light and joy to all around him every day. In his simplicity and innocence his joy was pure and his love unfiltered.

“The outpouring of love for both the O’Connor and Doherty families has been extraordinary. 30 pages of condolences on the RIP. ie website is unprecedented. Condolences came not only from friends but from people all over the country who were touched by this terrible tragedy. To hear the family speak of their love and compassion for Robert is a powerful Christian act and I pray to our Lord to surround Robert with strength peace and healing. I also appeal for greater care and resources for people with mental health issues. We can’t bring Mark, Louise and Evan back but we must try and ensure no other families are faced with a similar tragedy down the road,” stated Fr Campbell.

‘Sports Club’ Volunteer of the Year Awards 2025: FINAL CALL

LOUTH Local Sports Partnership is delighted to launch the 3rd Annual ‘Sports Club’ Volunteer of Year Awards 2025, to recognise and honour the huge community of volunteers across Co. Louth who give their time to provide sport and physical activity opportunities across the County.

More than 450,000 people across Ireland volunteer in sports clubs on a weekly basis ensuring opportunities to participate in sport and physical activity are provided in every community. Without them there would be no teams coached, no pitches lined, no matches played or races run. They are there to support sporting clubs and communities from early morning to late at night without any expectation of

recognition or reward.

Louth Local Sports Partnership is hosting this Awards ceremony to recognise and honour these people. The awards ceremony will take place on Monday November 10th 2025, in the Carrickdale Hotel.

One volunteer from every club in Louth will be honoured at the awards ceremony.

Each sports club in Louth can select their club volunteer of the year from their club who they feel should be recognised and celebrated for their contribution to providing sport-

ing opportunities within their local community. The awards in 2024 recognised volunteers from 110 clubs across Louth.

Application forms can be requested via email by contacting Louth Local Sports Partnership at Louthlsp@ louthcoco.ie or by visiting the website: www.louthlsp. com. Installation of new athletics track in Dundalk delayed until late April/early May

FOLLOWING on from Louth County Councils decision earlier this year to upgrade the track from a cinder surface to a high-quality synthetic surface, it has now been announced that the programme of works cannot be completed within the current calendar year.

For years there have been calls locally for a Municipal Athletics Track to be built in Dundalk and although work has begun in Muirhevnamór (Muirhevnamór District Park) progress has been slow with Louth County Council initially announcing the construction of a brand new athletics track back in 2018. The turning of the sod in 2019 marked the beginning of the ambitious project which at the time had an estimated cost of €1.6m.

In 2021 work on the new Municipal Athletics Track in Dundalk resumed with phase two beginning as contractors return to the site at Muirhevnamor.

That phase saw grass seeds being put down as well as a new fence being installed the whole way around what will be the new track.

This latest delay is primarily due to the technical require-

ments of the synthetic surface installation. The materials involved, specifically the pore sealer and self-levelling compound, require consistent temperatures above 12°C to cure properly. Attempting installation during the colder autumn months would risk surface defects and invalidate the manufacturer’s warranty.

Additionally, the materials have a limited shelf life and must be stored above 10°C, which is not feasible during the winter. For these reasons, the contractor has recommended that installation be scheduled for late April to early May 2026, when weather conditions are more favourable.

Current Cathaoirleach of Dundalk Municipal District Cllr Robert Nash responded to this latest news by saying, he was disappointed but accepting of the fact that proper procedure had to be followed.

“Obviously it’s disappointing that the project is going to be delayed but the synthetic surface of the athletics track is one of the most important parts of this development and it’s vitally important that the right procedures are followed to ensure that the surface stands the test of time and the validation of the manufactures warranty is guaranteed.

“We all want to see at long last a top class athletics track delivered for the people of Dundalk, but I know people will understand the importance of proper procedure being followed,” he stated.

“New scheme needed to support first-time buyers of second-hand home”—Cllr Rachel Kerley

COUNCILLOR Rachel Kerley has raised the need for alternative solutions to provide first time buyers of Secondhand homes with support.

Cllr. Rachel Kerley said that while the Help to Buy scheme has assisted many young people in purchasing their first home, it currently excludes a cohort of buyers who can only access the housing market through second-hand homes.

“There are various reasons why a secondhand home may be the only viable option for first-time buyers,” Cllr. Rachel Kerley explained. “Yet these hopeful homeowners are at a distinct disadvantage as they are not entitled to the supports that are available to those purchasing new

or self-builds.”

“Currently aspiring homeowners who wish to access the Help to Buy Scheme – which gives a tax rebate of up to €30,000 – are only able to avail of this support if they are purchasing a new-build with a value of less than

€500,000. This means that first-time buyers of second-hand homes are at a disadvantage and are precluded from this scheme.”

While acknowledging concerns previously raised of extending the Help to Buy Scheme to second-hand homes, risking inflating house prices, Cllr. Rachel Kerley has written to Minister John Cummins and Minister Paschal Donoghue proposing that government explore alternative measures, such as a voucher scheme.

This support could help first-time buyers of second-hand homes purchase essential household goods & appliances.

“Such a scheme would not only give new homeowners a much-needed hand up

as they begin their new chapter, but it would also provide a boost to the local economy by directing spending into local businesses and services,” Cllr. Rachel Kerley added.

I have written to the Minister to engage in discussions on the issue and to ensure that firsttime buyers of secondhand homes are not left behind in housing policy.

There is a commitment in the programme for the government to retain and revise the Help to Buy, and I welcome any revisions to the scheme, but we must do something.

Cllr. Kerley concluded that “We can and must do more to all support first-time buyers including those purchasing second-hand homes”.

Cllr Rachel Kerley.

Opening of Memorial and Garden of Reflection to honour Detective Garda Adrian Donohoe and Garda Tony Golden

THE recently-appointed Garda Commissioner

Justin Kelly hosted a ceremony to unveil a Memorial and open a Garden of Reflection in Honour of Detective Garda Adrian Donohoe and Garda Tony Golden at Dundalk Garda Station on Friday afternoon. The ceremony was attended by family members of Detective Garda Adrian Donohoe and Garda Tony Golden and The Minister for Justice, Home Affairs and Migration, Jim O’Callaghan TD. Minister O’Callaghan was formally met on arrival at 11:30am, at Dundalk Garda Station by Garda Commissioner Kelly and a formal Guard of Honour. The Garden of Reflection is located within an internal courtyard at Dundalk Garda Station and will act as a tranquil space within the busy Garda Station where those who work there can reflect on the lives of their former colleagues and the sacrifices they made.

Detective Garda Adri-

an Donohoe served at Dundalk Garda Station and had nineteen years of service with An Garda Siochána He was born in January 1972 in Kilnaleck, Co. Cavan and grew up on a small farm with his three brothers and two sisters. He was a keen Gaelic footballer, he played midfield for his local club before going on to represent Cavan GAA at Under-21 level. Adrian joined An Garda Síochána in 1994 and was married with two children.

At 9:30pm on the 25th

January 2013 Detective Garda Adrian Donohoe and his colleague Detective Garda Joe Ryan entered the car park of the Lordship Credit Union, Dundalk, Co Louth on a routine cash escort. A dark coloured car entered the car park with up to four people inside it. One person got out of this car and fired a shot fatally injuring Detective Garda Adrian Donohoe. Garda Anthony Golden served at Omeath Garda Station and had eleven years service with

An Garda Siochána. Anthony came from ballina in Co. Mayo and was married to Nicole who he had three children with.

On Sunday 11th October 2015 Garda Anthony Golden was on duty at Omeath Garda Station.

Shortly after 6.00pm Garda Golden left Omeath Garda Station, in uniform and unarmed, with a female who, accompanied by her father, had just made a formal complaint of assault against her partner. Garda Golden followed the woman

and her father to the house that she shared with her partner at Mullach Alainn, Omeath to continue with the investigation.

Garda Golden accompanied the woman and entered the house at Mullach Alainn, in the knowledge that the alleged offender was inside. The woman’s father remained outside on the advice of Garda Golden. After a short period of time, the woman’s father heard three shots in quick succession, a brief

pause and then three more shots. The woman’s father ran immediately to a nearby house to get assistance. Garda Gerard O’Callaghan was on patrol in the Cooley area when he received a call that shots had been fired at Mullach Alainn, Omeath, and that Garda Golden was not answering his radio. Garda O’Callaghan immediately went to the scene and discovered Garda Golden lying in the hallway with serious gunshot injuries, which sadly proved to be

fatal. He was just 36 at the time of his passing.

Speaking at the ceremony, Minister for Justice Jim O’Callaghan spoke about the legacy both gardaí left behind and how much of an inspiration they both were to future generations of the force.

“I hope this garden will be a place for people to reflect, to remember and to revere the lives of two remarkable men. I hope it becomes a place where the memories of both Adrian and Tony are cherished, and where their example will continue to inspire all who visit now and for generations to come.

“Every day, members of An Garda Síochána across Ireland protect our communities. They show bravery in the face of danger. They put the welfare of others before their own. They stand between us and harm, safeguarding our communities and our freedoms. Sometimes, tragically, that service comes with the highest possible cost,” stated the Minister for Justice.

The lecture, titled ‘Getting the Light’, will explore the fascinating story of how electricity transformed Dundalk and beyond.

It will trace the journey from the early days of electric power in the 1870s ,when it began to replace gas for lighting streets and steam for powering industry, to the introduction of a national electricity system under the ESB (Electricity Supply Board). The talk will also highlight the Rural Electrification Scheme, a major turning point that brought light and modern convenience to homes and farms across Ireland, profoundly changing rural life and opportunities.

The speaker, Tony Rice, brings a wealth of personal and professional experience to the topic. Space limited. Arrive early to avoid disappointment. Voluntary contributions are welcome at the door.

Probation services lending helping hand in local communities

THE Pumping Station Fairy Garden has blossomed into one of the most beautiful areas around Dundalk thanks to the efforts of a group of volunteers from Pearse Park.

The garden which is beside the An Post Sorting Office across the road from Pearse Park, was previously overgrown and unkempt until local resident

Ann Savage started to develop the space during COVID lockdown restrictions. Initially she planted flowers and shrubs to brighten up the garden but gradually, thanks to the help of local residents and community groups the garden blossomed into a space containing a fairy garden, wildflower

patch, Rose garden, rock garden, planting spaces for the Irish Wheelchair Association, community Peace Poles, bee sanctuary, Bark Box for doggie visitors, children’s play area and libraries. The garden also won an award for Best Biodiversity Project in 2022. It hosts community events such as the Annual Afternoon Tea on the Green to raise upkeep funds.

One of the groups who have helped make the garden what it is today is the Probation Service who provide support to local communities as part f the rehabilitation for offenders who may have made bad decisions in life or gone down the wrong road.

The purpose of these programmes is to support the Probation Officer in working with offenders to change their offending behaviour and in addressing the issues related to it.

As the garden grew and developed, Ann and a handful of local dedicated residents who volunteer their time, needed more support. Paul Carron is the Community Service Supervisor in Dundalk since 2019 and he was only too happy to lend a hand.

Paul (aka as The Dog Whisperer around the park) see’s the value of the garden for the local community and the joy and value it brings for residents and beyond.

Local organiser, Ann Savage said that having

the Community Service team on board is “always a positive experience, there is respect both sides and the lads have pride and ownership in their work here”

One participant said “I love painting. My grandfather was a painter so he taught me young. I’m happy coming here every week with Paul and Ann. It’s giving back to this area and helping Ann, a lovely women who treats us all so well when we are here”

Ann would like to thank the work and

support of following locals, Shona & Pauline McGovern, Gerry Woods, Paul Nordon, Tony and Janette Reynolds and also the Magnet Training Centre for their support.

Sheena Quigley, Senior Probation Officer for Louth, says that the community spirit shown through these schemes can only be classed as a positive.

“Community Service takes place between Tuesday and Saturday and the lads would be down in the Fairy Garden Pumping Station at

least once a week helping out Ann and the local residents with various projects.

“Ann is a very impressive lady and a former foster care worker I believe. She has a lot of respect for the lads and in turn they enjoy being around her and helping out in the garden. A lot of these people doing community service will have made bad choices but they deserve a second chance and by doing community service they can stay out of prison while at the same time do some good in

their local communities,” explained Sheena.

“I’m a big believer in rehabilitation and second chances and the vast majority of people doing community service acknowledge they have made mistakes and want to redeem themselves by helping out in their local communities. Projects like the Fairy Garden pumping Station are a perfect example of the positive aspects of community service and how it can help in our communities,” concluded Sheena.

ARE YOU DANCING?

Showbands, popular music and memory in modern Ireland

CULTURE Club and Roe River Books are delighted to welcome Rebecca S. Millar to Dundalk to discuss her book, Are You Dancing? Showbands, Popular Music and Memory in Modern Ireland, in Roe River Books on Tuesday October 14th at 7.00pm. From the mid-1950s to the mid-1970s, showbands were all the rage among Ireland’s dancing audiences. Performing covers of rock ‘n’ roll and pop hits from American and British weekly Top 10 charts, they riveted their fans, dismayed many parish priests, and offered Irish youth a taste of modernism and pop culture from outside of Ireland.

In Are You Dancing?, Rebecca S. Miller tells the story of how these working-class bands brought new sounds and choreographies to the Irish and Northern Irish pop landscape. Both as a response to and an agent in Ireland’s changing economic landscape, showbands quickly grew into a hugely lucrative commercial industry. At the same time, they nudged open doors for Irish women to take to the stage as pop stars, rewarded a generation of en-

trepreneurs, and created the template for Ireland’s popular music industry. Miller draws upon interviews with more than 80 musicians, agents, managers, fans, and clergy, to reveal the vast interplay of social, economic, and cultural changes that ensued with the Irish showband era.

Drawing upon an extensive catalogue of ethnographic and archival research, Miller

presents an overlooked era of musical performances that revolutionized Irish entertainment.

Rebecca S. Miller is Professor of Music at Hampshire College, a public sector folklorist, and an accomplished traditional fiddler. She is the author of Carriacou String Band Serenade: Performing Identity in the Eastern Caribbean.

Praise for Are You Dancing? Showbands, Popular Music and Memory in Modern Ireland

“What a wonderful book! Are You Dancing? captures the grit, glamour, innocence and uniformity of Ireland in the showband era. Scholarly yet intimate, you can almost smell the sweat, sex and shoe polish of a showband in full swing. A treasure chest for punter or professor.” ~ Larry Kirwan, Black 47.

NOVENA TO THE SACRED HEART

Dear Heart of Jesus, in the past I asked you for many favours. This time, I ask for this special favour (mention it). Take it, dear Heart of Jesus and place it within your own broken heart, where your Father sees it. Then in His merciful eyes, it will become your favour, not mine. Amen. Say this prayer for three days. Promise publication and favours will be granted. (Never known to fail).

K.S. SAINT THERESA NOVENA

St. Theresa, the little flower, please pick me a rose from your heavenly garden and send it to me with a message of love. Ask God to grant me the favor I thee implore and tell him I will love him each day more and more. K.S.

MIRACULOUS PRAYER TO THE HOLY SPIRIT

Holy Spirit, you who makes me see everything and shows me the way to reach my ideal, you who gives me the divine gift to forgive and forget all the wrong that is done to me and you who are in all instances of my life with me. I, in this short dialogue, want to thank you for everything, and affirm once more that I never want to be separated from you no matter how great the material desires may be. I want to be with you and my loved ones… in your perpetual glory. Amen. To that end, and submitting to God’s holy will, I ask from you… (mention your favor). You must pray this prayer three consecutive days. After the third day your wish shall be granted no matter how difficult It may be. Promise to publish the dialogue as your favour has been granted. Host of free family-friendly events to take place in Dundalk next Saturday

for Family Day

DUNDALK families and space enthusiasts are in for a treat this Saturday, 11th October, as a series of events will take place throughout the town to mark Family Space Day. The day will feature planetarium shows, live talks, hands-on activities, and inspiring space-themed experiences for all ages. Hosted at Louth County Library and the Dundalk Credit Union Community Building, the event is part of World Space Week 2025 and is organised by Dr. Niamh Shaw as part of her community science programme Town Scientist, funded by Research Ireland’s Discover Programme.

Taking place from 11am to 5pm, programme highlights will include:

1.—Armagh Planetarium Dome

Shows. Experience the night sky like never before inside a portable planetarium dome from Armagh Observatory and Planetarium. Shows take place every 30 minutes from 11am to 5pm at Dundalk Credit Unition Community Building.

2.—Engineering for Life in Space, 11am in Dundalk Library. How do astronauts sleep, cook and live in space? Learn what it takes to design a home in space with former NASA engineer David Bushman, who helped build life support systems for the International Space Station. Taking place.

3.—Living in the Arctic…Think-

ing About Space, 3pm in Dundalk Library

Join Dundalk’s Town Scientist and explorer Dr. Niamh Shaw as she shares stories from her recent Arctic expedition. Discover what life was like on a ship in the frozen north — and why it might help us live on the Moon or Mars. Her interactive talk will include real footage, personal stories, and a Q&A.

4.—Create your own spacethemed accessory! 12pm – 3pm in Dundalk Credit Union Community Building.

This creative, hands-on workshop is delivered by Town Scientist alumni and local parent, Eva Ponomoraw. Children and families will create their own space-themed accessory, going home not only with a beautiful keepsake but a new way of looking at the universe. Ages 8 and up, children must be accompanied by a parent or guardian. All events are free, but families

of Space

are asked to register in advance. A number of the events are fully booked but a waitlist is in operation. The full line of events and registration is available here: https://www. eventbrite.com/e/free-town-scientist-family-space-day-at-dundalklibrary-and-dundalk-credit-tickets1744060364499?aff=oddtdtcreator.

Speaking ahead of Saturday, Town Scientist for Dundalk Dr Niamh Shaw said: “We have a host of amazing family events for this year’s Space Week. From talks, to interactive workshops, to journeys through space in a portable planetarium, there is something for all the family. However we are asking people to make sure they check out and register via the Eventbrite link to avoid disappointment.

“Space Day will be culmination of collaboration and hard work between a number of organisations – Dundalk Credit Union, Louth County Library, Louth ABC Programme in partnership with Louth County Council, and the team behind Town Scientist. It is thanks to their support and enthusiasm we can bring Space Day to life. None of this would be possible without the support of Research Ireland and their Discover Programme.”

Glenmuir FC continue to thrive ahead of 50th anniversary celebrations

NEXT year Glenmuir will celebrate their 50th anniversary and the growth in those five decades for the club has been exceptional. When the club formed in 1976 they played on the green of the local estate but fast forward 49 years and the club is thriving having moved into their new home in Hoey’s Lane in 1994.

Last Saturday the club hosted a hugely successful U10’s tournament which saw sixteen teams take part including teams from Lisdrum (Newry), Kells, Athboy, Albion Rovers, Rock Celtic, Ardee, Termonfeckin, Walshestown, Shamrocks and of course Glenmuir. Tournament Director Chris McGeary who is also the club’s Academy Co-ordinator was delighted with how the tournament was received and is already looking forward to putting on an even bigger and better tournament as part of next year’s 50th anniversary celebrations.

“We used this tournament as a dry run for next year and thankfully it went really well. We have a great committee down here and everybody played their part to ensure things ran

well. The only big worry we had was the weather and thankfully the rain cleared.

“We wanted to put on a professional set up and we had the tournify app, referees, speakers and a coaches room where all the coaches could sit down and have a cup of tea and a biscuit and get to know each other, exchange ideas and form friendships. We also had a fruitbox and water for every kid and the feedback we got was all positive” stated Chris.

Club chairman Mark Sheils was also delighted with how the day transpired and proud to see so many kids enjoying themselves on the Glenmuir

pitches. Chris was our tournament director and and he did a fantastic job as did everybody on our brilliant committee. I’ve been involved with Glenmuir for over 30 years. Thankfully the club is thriving at the moment and we have well over 400 kids playing football with the club.

“We have a girls academy which is growing all the time with teams from U7’s right up to U14’s. We recently received a sports capital grant and we have installed solar panels on our clubhouse which are helping to power our brand new floodlights. We are also currently planning to install a walking track

Glenmuir FC U10’s Tournament

around the pitches which will be open to the whole community. As well as that, we are busy preparing for our 50th anniversary celebrations next year and we will have a range of events to mark that milestone. It takes a lot of hard work and a lot of dedicated people to make sure a club keeps growing but we have some fantastic volunteers down here and despite some of the headaches that crop up from time to time I have to say this is my happy place and I love being a part of this club,” stated Mark. Lisdrum beat Athboy in the Cup final while Glenmuir won the trophy final.

Children in Louth urged to take part in Christmas Shoebox Appeal

SCHOOLS across Louth are being asked to support children living in poverty around the world by registering for Ireland’s most loved Christmas appeal.

Team Hope, the charity that delivers gifts into the hands of children living in poverty across Africa and Eastern Europe, is calling on children and families in the county to get involved in this year’s Christmas Shoebox Appeal.

As it marks its 15th year of the Christmas Shoebox Appeal, Team Hope is asking schools and employers – as well as individuals and community organisations – across the county to get involved by logging onto teamhope.ie.

Since 2010, Team Hope has delivered over 2.8 million shoebox gifts and this year expects to surpass the three million mark.

Often these gift-packed shoeboxes are the only festive presents children living in poverty in countries in Africa and Eastern Europe receive.

“A simple shoebox, often packed by children for children, carries not only toys and treats but also the invisible gifts of love and hope,” said Team Hope CEO, Deborah Lowry.

“That kindness, travelling across oceans, reminds a child that they are not forgotten – that someone, somewhere cares.

“In a world where headlines often highlight what is broken, the Christmas Shoebox Appeal stands as a powerful demonstration that the world is also filled with kindness.”

Ms Lowry used the example of a father of three who received the gift of a Christmas shoebox as a child and who now makes shoeboxes for other children with his own family as a great example of the gift of giving.

Collection for Saint Patrick’s Parish Soup Kitchen at Oriel Park

FRIDAY is a big night for fans of Dundalk FC who are hoping a win will seal the First Division title for the club, but they’re also being asked to support another local cause on the night - a collection in aid of St. Patrick’s Parish Soup Kitchen/Food Parcels.

The voluntary group completely relies on donations from the public and local businesses to fund the soup kitchen (the building on the left side of St. Patrick’s car park, Roden Place) which provides a hot meal and a drink to those in need from 7-8pm Monday to Saturday and from 2-3pm on Sundays.

The Food Parcels are

available on Fridays from 10-11am where basic food essentials are provided (including bread, milk, eggs and other alternating items like beans/peas, curry/ pasta sauce, rice/pasta, teabags and breakfast cereal/porridge.) Their volunteers will be holding a bucket col-

lection at Oriel Park this Friday as the fans arrive for the Lilywhites’ last home game against Finn Harps so the supporters who’d like to help their fundraiser are being asked to bring some extra change with them or to have their smartphones to hand if they’d like to donate online via a QR code that links to

the group’s i-donate account (https://www.idonate.ie/cause/12550)

The organisers would like to thank Dundalk FC for facilitating this collection (ahead of their annual bucket collection on December 12th) and of course all those supporters who are able to give on the night. C’mon the Town!

want to hear from you
