Ter m Review

I hope flic king through the pages of this lovely review of our Spr ing Ter m g ives a sense of the incredibly var ied and wholesome lives that our pupils lead at Dumpton From some record-breaking academic sc holar ship results, to more National Finalists (well done to the U13 Boys Hoc key team and our super Swim Squad), to the perfor ming ar ts br illiance of the Spr ing Spectacular and our Senior production of Mary Poppins, it has been a most busy, but most successful ter m We also hosted our fir st ever ‘Dumpton Talks Week’ - with nearly 150 of you joining us across the week for a ser ies of talks from exper ts about issues relevant to br ing ing up c hildren in what is becoming an ever more complicated moder n world.

But perhaps my highlight of the ter m was our inspirational Global Citizenship Day I was so proud of our pupils, but also proud that we as a sc hool are putting Global Citizenship at the hear t of our education We fir mly believe that c hildren will benefit from under standing their place in the wider world, and from nur tur ing a desire to help suppor t our planet and all the people who live on it. Not only does this g ive them a sense of agenc y, pur pose and fulfilment in the

face of some of these global c hallenges (after all, as we know, the best antidote to wor rying about something is to feel like you are doing something about it!), but I tr uly believe we are helping them g row into the c hangemaker s and innovator s of a future where our economy is likely to be dr iven by sustainability and environmental issues As US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken recently said: ‘the Green Economy is the future’ - and I hope we are g iving the pupils at Dumpton a significant headstar t in this regard.

It’s incredibly energ ising spending time with your c hildren, and seeing how deter minedly and positively they enact the sc hool’s ‘Be Kind and Aim High’ values in all that they do here at Dumpton. Whatever doom and gloom you might read and see in the news, I can promise you this: if the pupils at Dumpton are anything to go by, our planet is in the safest of hands.

Meet our Cater ing Team

A word from Steph Jones Cater ing Manager at Dumpton

Suc h a lot has c hanged in the 36 year s I have been at Dumpton; circa 100 pupils, with a major ity being boarder s and staff of around 40 We were responsible for 3 meals and snac ks 7 days a week then, 1 meal and a snac k for 300 pupils and 100 staff today. We have always tr ied to keep the favour ites on the menu – Bolognese, Roasts, Fishy Fr iday to name a few. The difference in this era compared to 1988 is that the menus are nutr itionally c hec ked by a dietician to confir m we offer a wide range of foods and also meet the Sc hool Standards. What has not c hanged, is the enthusiasm for foods the c hildren have Whilst the pupils like traditional puddings there is a definite swing towards fresh fr uit with the odd “treat day”. Smoothies always go down well and

when possible we minimise the use of sugar and use natural honey or apple juice instead.Yoghur t Bar is another favour ite, fresh raspber r ies and strawber r ies with perhaps a cr umble or flapjac k spr inkled makes a tasty desser t c hoice. Matc h teas are a favour ite par t of the week for Parents and c hildren alike The Cater ing depar tment always enjoy ter mly themes; from Chr istmas to Easter, themed foods to matc h a play or our Family After noon. Occasionally we get involved with fancy dress to matc h – whic h the c hildren always enjoy Our Cater ing team of 11 have a wealth of exper ience in cater ing; we work together to constantly improve our offer ing, including listening to the c hildren when they ask if they could have a cer tain dish to try.

Dumpton Talks

We were delighted to host a series of talks at Dumpton this Spring Term. Fantastic visiting speakers provided insight on different elements of parenting and shared wisdom about how best to bring up our children in a modern world. All the talks were so well received and we know all those who attended took away some useful tools to consider when raising our children.

In a full week of talks we enjoyed time with Melissa Clinton, Head of Wellbeing at Canford Sc hool speaking to us about creating and maintaining good habits, with a par ticular focus on sleep habits

We explored the world of tec h with Har r iet Per rett, Assistant Head (Middle Year s) at Clayesmore Sc hool. ‘Bored and br illiant:free the mind from technology to ignite creativity’ Har r iet shared how Clayesmore approac h this ever-c hang ing landscape for Pre-Prep through to teenage year s.

Tony Pulis, for mer Premier ship football manager and player gave an inspir ing talk about life before and after professional spor t and how impor tant it is to cultivate good behaviour s and work ethic to ac hieve your dreams

We had some practical and insightful strateg ies from Dr Alisha Azzopardi on motivating and foster ing resilience with our c hildren, and how to recognise how our own upbr ing ing affects our approac h to parenting

Dr Preetpal S Bachra, Deputy Head - Pupil Development at Bryanston gave an extremely interesting talk on ‘Parenting Tweens and Teens’, with par ticular focus on identifying pressures for our c hildren and how to navigate the sc hool year s ahead.

I couldn’t be prouder of both casts! So much hard work, collaboration and dedication on show; practically perfect in every way!

Putting on a show like this requires such a huge amount of collaboration from staff and pupils alike, and what a team they all were! This was such a fun show to put on and it was such fun to recreate such a classic .

Global Citizenship Day

Dumpton’s annual Global Citizenship Day br ings the whole sc hool together to make sustainability a pr ior ity, with eac h year g roup shar ing their exper iences

This year, pupils have planted a new copse of trees in Tar rant Monkton, par ticipated in Surfer s Against Sewage’s Million Mile beac h clean in Bour nemouth, worked with Wimbor ne Council to clean up public recreation spaces and suppor ted volunteer s at Wimbor ne Community Garden, lear ning the value of locally produced food.

This year ’ s theme was Br ight New World, inspired by the book by Cindy Forde.
