3D Lovers 2016 Michelle Erikson Artist Statement: In 2016 I collaborated with Wilton House Museum in Richmond VA to respond to the 18th century plantation house, its furnishings, architecture and collections and create work for my solo exhibition You & I are Earth. 3D Lovers is the result of an experimental project with the Museum and Dr. Bernard Means at VCU’s Virtual Curation Lab to 3D scan objects I selected from collection. In this example an 18th century Bow china figural group of lovers. The original figurines were about 7” tall and once scanned I decided to isolate just the heads and to 3D print extreme enlargements as busts. The couple maintained their lovers’ posture and the 3D printing’s physical language created a simultaneous linear and polygonal surface. The choice of black and white is meant to visually provoke traditional perceptions of history of race and of gender.
