Homeschool Programs 2015-2016 Introduce students to our nation’s past through homeschool history days at Dumbarton House. During our hands-on program student travel back in to the early 1800s and explore Washington, D.C. history. Each program includes an interactive tour of the museum or grounds, followed by a workshop and snack.

Homeschool History Days are held on the 3rd Wednesday of the month from 1pm-3pm. Are programs are geared to students ages 5-12 years old. Students must be accompanied by a parent or responsible adult.

Registration Register online at http://dumbartonhouse.org/youth-groups. Registration should be made at least 1 week prior to the program date. All programs provide a snack. Please notify staff of any food allergies at least 48 hours in advance.

Payment The charge for our programs are $6 per student, $3 per adult, supplies and snack included.

Cancellations must be made at least 7 days before program date to be eligible for a refund.

Special Needs The Museum’s programs are available to all students as the hands-on programs are developed to connect with all learning styles. Given enough notification, Museum Educators can adapt programs to fit the specific needs of your students. The Museum is wheelchair accessible.

Homeschool Schedule 2015-2016 Harvest Time, November 18, 2015 Would you eat oyster flavored ice cream? Could you make cookies with a recipe that has no exact measurements? Using primary sources and observation, students will learn how food was created and consumed at Dumbarton House (Oyster ice cream taste test not included!).

Winter Warmth at Dumbarton House, December 16, 2015 Keep your body and spirit warm by learning about winter and Christmas in the Federal Period. Students will compare and contrast their experience of winter with that of the Nourse family at Dumbarton House. Create your own Christmas treat to take home.

Art at Dumbarton, January 20, 2016 A picture is worth a thousand words so during this program students will read art pieces in the house to better understand artistic tools, mediums, and techniques. Students will also be challenged to create their own still life drawings using different artistic mediums.

Express yourself, explore, and maybe answer that age-old question, “what is art?”

Presidents and City Planners, February 17, 2016 Joseph Nourse worked for the first six U.S. presidents and while students will not have to perform his Treasury duties they will learn what it was like to be part of early Washington, D.C. After touring Dumbarton House to learn about U.S. capitals and symbols students will take on the role of capital city planner and create their own seal and nation’s capital.

Communication Through Time, March 16, 2016 By examining letter writing and the way letters were transported, students will be able to compare and contrast how communication during the Federal Period differs from the ways we interact with each other today. How has the post office evolved? What did a husband and wife write in their letters to each other? Students will use reproduction quill pens to write their own letters.

Interpretation and Conservation, April 20, 2016 How have historic sites changed over time? Students will take on the role of historian and conservator to understand how Dumbarton House has changed since being used as a residence 200 years ago. Through hands-on activities students will practice conservation of “historic” objects.

Farm to Table at Dumbarton House, May 18, 2016 Were Federal period households energy efficient? How do we interact with our environment? Students will explore the inside and outside of Dumbarton House to learn more about where our food comes from and how to be more responsible citizens of the Earth. By using herbs cut in Dumbarton House’s own garden students will feel even more connected to the historic site.
