Lake View expansion on track
By Teri Cadeau tcadeau@ lcnewschronicle.comConstruction of the $17 million expansion project to connect the Lake View Hospital and Medical Clinic in Two Harbors is on track, despite a few obstacles, said Lake View Chief Executive Officer Greg Ruberg.
“It’s going very well,” Ruberg said. “We had some challenges early on in the winter with a lot of snow that we got through. Right now we’re both on track and on budget, and overall we’re on schedule as we’re just over 50% complete.”
The new two-level, 36,000-square-foot building will link the hospital and clinic, provide a single entrance and includes a public meeting center with room for up to 90 people and an expanded inpatient pharmacy. The new building was designed by architect BWBR and is being built by Kraus-Anderson Construction Co. Crews broke ground in May 2019.
The project is expected to be “substantially completed” in August, which means nearly all of the work will be done by then, Ruberg said.
The new entry point for the clinic and
hospital will provide private registration areas to maximize efficiency and patient confidentiality, Ruberg said. Right off the entrance will be a new integrated lab that will combine the hospital and clinic labs into one space. The inpatient pharmacy will provide the space and updated technology to allow on-site infusion therapy, such as chemotherapy or IV treatments. The community gathering space will allow the hospital to host health and wellness programs and classes to “focus on keeping community
members healthy, rather than just treating illnesses later in life,” Ruberg said. There are also plans for the new building to house an urgent care space, as well as space for surgery and procedures in the future.
Meeting construction challenges
Although Ruberg said the project has gone overall smoothly, there have been a few challenges along the way. The initial design phase yielded a challenge as there is a 7-foot height difference between the two buildings.

Changes in Lake County retail, resorts top business news in 2019
By Teri Cadeau tcadeau@ lcnewschronicle.comThe only constant is change — especially in business. Here are some of the big business changes that happened in Lake County over the past year.
The Bee’s Knees opens in Two Harbors
Two lifelong friends, Kathy Ruberg and Louise Fransen, joined forces to come out of retirement and create a new craft and gift shop in half
of the Agate Rock Shop building, 721 Seventh Ave., Two Harbors. The Bee’s Knees held a grand opening April 5. The shop consists of merchandise acquired or created by Ruberg and Fransen. They have separate inventories based on their different tastes. Fransen is a quilter, while Ruberg makes fleece blankets and crocheted products.
The Bee’s Knees is open from 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday to Saturday and 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday.
BUSINESSES: Page 3

“We spent a lot more time in the development and design stages than we would have if it had been a flat or level surface,” Ruberg said.
However the work and time has paid off, Ruberg said, as he just had an opportunity to walk through the space.
“It was really interesting to walk inside and see how the architect team and construction management team really tackled that challenge,” Ruberg said. “It’s going to be very smooth as far as patient flow and convenience. I feel confident we made the right decisions despite the challenges that were presented upfront.”
Another challenge that arose was the discovery of the old clinic foundation buried under the parking lot.
“We had some contaminated soil we had to remove, as well. So that cost us both money and time,” Ruberg said.
The discovery also caused plans to change. Originally the parking lot south of the clinic was slated to be replaced this coming summer, but the work was done in 2019.
“We wanted to have easy access for our clinic patients to our front door and safe parking for patients, families and staff throughout the winter with good lighting,” Ruberg said.
Current construction status
With the work just over 50% complete, Ruberg said the main focus right now is on building interior walls inside the extension building.
“Right now they’re actually chalking out all the interior walls so you can see the layout of all the individual departments and the public space,” Ruberg said. “It makes it more real.”
The initial steel framing work is complete, and the cement work is done on the two levels. The roof is on and is “for the most part, weather-tight” Ruberg said. All of the internal mechanical and wiring work is underway, which Ruberg said has been running fairly fast. Most of the building has been wrapped with initial insulation, and the screen wall and canopy are up.
“Last week, we had 43 contractors on-site in one day,” Ruberg said. “We had 43 people representing almost all of the building trades, union labor from Two Harbors, Duluth and the surrounding area working together.”
Planning for the future
With the work continuing through August, Ruberg said hospital and clinic patients should expect some minor changes and disruptions to continue. There will be a disruption to clinic operation starting in April.
“Specifically they’re going to have to take down the north wall of

artist rendering of what the Lake View Hospital and Clinic link exterior will look like when complete.
the clinic, the exterior wall,” Ruberg said. “We’re going to put some temporary walls up inside the clinic and we’ve been planning for this for months and we’ve had meetings with our entire clinic team. We’ve got some really creative ideas on how we can really minimize and eliminate impact on patients.”
But the registration area and lobby will be different. Ruberg said clinic leaders will send out more information on what patients can expect as the changes begin to take shape.
But Ruberg said he isn’t overly worried about complaints from the public, as he’s so far received none, despite having to move the main entry to the hospital last fall.
“To go through all the disruptions we’ve had and have people still positive in the hallways,
that says a lot about our community,” Ruberg said. “People have mostly been amazingly patient and flexible
with the project. I’ve heard stories from other hospital CEOs that construction is just a headache and
there’s nothing but challenges. I’ve not seen that here. It’s been an enjoyable project.”

The North Shore gained a new food truck specializing in nachos, tacos, burritos and burrito bowls. Amy Goerdt and family opened up the new custom-built truck in spring 2019. Originally Na-cho Bizness was going to be focused solely
on nachos. Goerdt and husband Chris had visited a restaurant in Las Vegas that only served varieties of nachos called Nacho Daddy. But she wanted to have other options for people with food allergies and preferences.
Goerdt developed a regular schedule for the truck at various locations throughout Two Harbors and Silver Bay. She announces the truck’s schedule on Facebook at the start of every week and already has regular customers.

As for the consignment portion, she focused strictly on women’s clothing. Anyone wanting to sell clothing, purses or shoes will get 50% of the sales. Two Harbors’ coziest
By Jamey Malcomb jmalcomb@Two Harbors doesn’t need a Starbucks, Caribou Coffee or other national chain, because locallyowned and operated shops offer plenty of places for coffee lovers to get their caffeine fix, catch up on some work or get lost in a good book.
Here are four of the coziest spots in town to check out the next time you need a cup of joe or a tasty snack.
Cedar Coffee Co.
This spot, if not the coziest coffee shop on the North Shore, is easily among the most scenic.
Its secluded spot in Two Harbors is just a quarter-mile from Super One, but
you would never know with floor-to-ceiling windows looking out on the surrounding forest. Look close in the winter and you might see some deer visiting a low-hanging bird feeder. The shop serves coffee and espresso drinks roasted by Duluth Coffee Co. and is easily accessible from the network of trails and bike paths around Two Harbors. It also has a solid menu of breakfast and lunch items, as well as a number of craft beers from a variety of local breweries. Its location close to the heart of Two Harbors has made Cedar Coffee Co. a virtual crossroads for the Two Harbors community and an excellent place to spend an afternoon

working or socializing.

Mocha Moose
The Mocha Moose might be what you would get if a North Shore cabin merged with a trendy coffee shop in Duluth. Serving Duluth Coffee Co. roasts, as well as baked goods from Positively Third Street Bakery in Duluth, this spot on Scenic Drive offers a couple of cozy chairs by a fireplace to read. It also has a larger room with tables and chairs for groups to use.

It’s also the only drive-thru coffee shop in town and is open early enough for those headed up Minnesota Highway 61 for work before 7 a.m.
What really makes this shop stand out, however, is a broad selection of handmade pottery, used books and even women’s and children’s clothing for sale. It’s not called White Pine Market for nothing.
