Like most people working in corporate America, Howard and Linda Payne dreamed of selling everything they owned and heading out on a big adventure. The difference between the Paynes and “most people,” however, is that the Paynes actually did it.
At age 41, the couple experienced a transformative trip to Alaska, which made them rethink everything.
“We were both working in the corporate world –Howard as an attorney, and me as a director of operations,” Linda said, “and we took a two-week vacation to Alaska. This was in 2004. We did a lot of back-country camping and hiking, and we were
cut off from technology.
“There in Alaska,” she continued, “we truly reconnected as a couple. We had never had trouble in our marriage, but we had lost some of our intimacy and closeness. This trip rekindled all of that.”
“Travel and nature revitalized us,” Howard added. “And, we decided to change our lives.”
The Paynes decided to sell everything, purchase an RV, and live an adventurous life on the road. There was only one problem: “We had never RV’ed before in our lives,” Linda said with a hearty laugh.
Howard buckled down and did some solid
Meet Howard and Linda Payne, real-life, full-time RVers, who will share their RVing lifestyle experiences at a variety of seminars in Gooseberry Room 2 at the Duluth Boat, Sports, Travel & RV Show. See page 4 for all seminar schedules.
research. After a month, they felt ready. The Paynes sold their 4,000 square foot “dream home” in Louisville, Ken., while learning about ways to make money from the road, such as by “work camping,” monetizing their website, and speaking at RV shows. The couple’s first “rig” was a 40-foot, 400-square-foot fifthwheel with four slides/ pop-outs and all the luxuries of home: a king-sized bed, electric fireplace, side-by-side fridge, and washer and dryer. Later, they downsized to a 29-foot class C motorhome, which is still pretty swank; it features a queen-sized bed, full kitchen and full bathroom.
The Paynes have had
some amazing adventures over the last 15 years, including visits to 51 national parks and plenty of hiking, kayaking, fishing, and photography.
“Every state has something special to offer,” Howard said. “We meet locals and like to live like locals.”
“But our focus was nature,” Linda added.
Today, the Paynes have much to share, and will present some of their knowledge and experience at the 54th annual Duluth Boat, Sports, Travel & RV Show at the DECC. Their two seminars are titled “RVing Basics,” and “Alaska – The Ultimate RV Trip.”
The Paynes have learned
plenty about the logistics of owning and operating an RV over the years, but they are also experienced in highly practical topics, such as how they receive mail, how they purchase health insurance, what states are best to “domicile,” and how to find RV camping spots for free.
In addition to presenting at shows and expos across the country, the Paynes host annual educational rallies, and share information on their comprehensive website,
RV-Dreams.com.
For the Paynes, the RV lifestyle was the perfect way to slow down, appreciate life, and rekindle their relationship.
“We are much more present with each other, as well as with friends and family,” Howard said. “This lifestyle takes away a lot of distractions.”
“We meet so many people who are still working the daily grind,” Linda added. “I would share that money doesn’t bring you happiness. We are now rich with life.”

Taking a vacation can be a welcome distraction from time to time – particularly for those of us in northern Minnesota, where our frigid winters can seem to last forever.
Perhaps you don’t have the budget for two weeks in Bermuda, but Voxel Virtual Reality can help you escape reality – at least for a little while.
Jeff Trinh-Sy is a physics, astronomy and engineering teacher. His business partner, Matthew Tande, is an attorney. Together, they opened Voxel Virtual Reality
Parlor in St. Paul, Minn., in 2016.
“We got the name ‘Voxel’ from the name of a three-dimensional pixel,” Trinh-Sy explained. “We provide virtual reality (VR) experiences for anyone who wants to try them, from young to old. We had a customer who was 5 years old, and we also hosted a 72-year old’s birthday. And, while we have a parlor, we’ll also travel. We’ve been asked to do new college student orientations, and we’ve attended events for the Special Olympics.”
Trinh-Sy explained a little more about VR.
“People put on a
headset and they are totally immersed in a different environment. We offer a wide variety of ‘experiences’ from safaris to space adventures, fighting zombies to playing sports and going underwater. We currently offer almost 30 different experiences, which we change and rotate from month to month.”
To try this exciting experience, patrons visit Voxel’s parlor, where they can purchase time by the hour. Or, Voxel can come to you; they also offer mobile services, where Voxel’s staff will set up their equipment at your birthday party, bar mitzvah, or graduation party. But they do not
sell VR devices. “We sell the experience, but not the equipment,” Trinh-Sy said.
Customers who come in as a group can choose to experience the virtual world together, or individually. Each experience is “room scale.”
“This means that customers are moving around a large space to fully appreciate the freedom they have in VR,” Trinh-Sy said.
In addition to fun experiences, where customers can explore the deep sea or walk with dinosaurs, the VR world also has broader applications. For instance, with house hunting. Some real estate agencies are providing VR walkthroughs for clients who may be purchasing a home in another city. VR can help architects present renderings to
their clients, and may someday provide a deeper look into the human body.
Voxel Virtual Reality has also helped create custom VR content for private clients.
“We recently created a VR tour of a courtroom for a law firm,” Trinh-Sy explained.
Try VR for yourself
Voxel Virtual Reality is looking forward to their first appearance at the 54th annual Duluth Boat, Sports, Travel & RV Show at the DECC. Here, participants can try the VR experience as part of their entry to the show –at no extra charge.
Virtual reality experiences at the Boat Show will include six different options, including: Nature Treks (environmental scenes); TheBlu (an underwater experience); Long Bow (using a bow and arrow
to protect your castle); Beat Saber (a musical experience, similar to Guitar Hero); VR Supersports (sports such as archery and boxing); and Space Pirate Trainer (knocking down space robots with weapons and shields).
Trinh-Sy explained the company will have several of their staff members available to offer training and assistance.
“People will get a tutorial first, but they’ll find that things are pretty intuitive,” he said.
VR is truly a fun, immersive experience that everyone can enjoy.
“The biggest barrier is that people immediately just think it’s a game for kids,” Trinh-Sy said. “But, without fail, all of our customers say, ‘This is fun!’ It’s truly something the whole family can enjoy together.
When Davod Zarghami and his four business partners, who are all educators, launched Northern Soda Company, they took a lot of inspiration from the craft beer industry. That is, they not only offer a quality product, but also a fun place to enjoy it.
“We’re all soda enthusiasts,” Zarghami said, “so we really enjoy the product. Our niche is based around a 1950s-style soda, which is handcrafted with cane sugar. Customers can mix and match to build their own four-pack, flat, or case.”
“We also offer a sampling room, or tap room, where customers can come in and try the soda,” he added. “We have a projector screen on the wall, and we play all the local sporting events. We also have board games and popcorn. We really wanted to bring back the old-school ‘pop shop.’ That was a fun thing from our childhoods.”
Founded by teachers
Northern Soda, based in Arden Hills, Minn., has been in business for 18 months. A colleague of Zarghami’s had launched a soda company, but got burned out doing it alone. So, five friends and colleagues got together to
launch Northern Soda.
They have been so successful thus far that two of the teachers have been able to leave the profession to focus on soda full-time. In addition to its owners, Northern Soda has partnered with Bethel University’s Build Program, to offer jobs for students with special needs.
From their single facility, Northern Soda offers manufacturing, production, and tours. They also provide a great place to have a party.
“We host a lot of team-building activities, meetings and groups, such as the Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts,” Zarghami said.
Northern Soda is made with high-quality ingredients and cane sugar, rather than highfructose corn syrup. The company sources supplies and ingredients locally whenever possible, such as patronizing Lagersmith in Stillwater for cans, sleeves and other materials, and Cargill for cane sugar.
As far as their recipes, it has taken time, but the company feels they have gotten it right.
“We spent a lot of time studying old-school recipes,” Zarghami said.
“But it’s been a lot of trial and error.”
Eighteen varieties
of fizzy goodness are available to choose from, including:
• Root beer
• Diet root beer
• Cream soda
• Black cherry
• Cherry citrus
• Sunday purple (grape cream soda, providing a nod to the Minnesota Vikings)
• North coast cooler (caramelized pineapple flavor)
• Due north (lemonlime)
• Minnesota apple
• Cola
• Mango citrus
• Blue raspberry
• Ginger
• Strawberry
• Orange
• Huckleberry
• Pontoon punch (the “fruit punch of the north”)
• Grapefruit
Additionally, Northern Soda Company offers several rotating options at their taproom. Right now, these options include bananas foster, birch beer, and Mrs. Sippy, which is Northern Soda’s take on a Dr Pepper-style soft drink.
Customers can purchase growlers, four-packs or a case of 24. Northern Soda also accepts online orders.
Business is booming Zarghami and his team were thrilled when Northern Soda was recently named the
official soda pop of the St. Paul Winter Carnival. And, while most of Northern Soda’s business is currently based in the Twin Cities metro area, Zarghami is hoping that their first appearance at the 54th annual Duluth Boat, Sports, Travel & RV Show at the DECC will change that. There, customers can sample all of their sodas, and even purchase some to take home.
“We currently have over 120 partners that carry Northern Soda, but about 85 percent of them are in the Twin Cities metro,” Zarghami said. “We do have a few in Duluth, such as Mount Royal Fine Foods, Grandma’s Restaurants, Blue Heron Trading Company, and the Great Lakes Aquarium. We are also sold at Castle Danger Brewing, Gunflint Mercantile, and Hippie Tacos. But, as we turn to 2020, our growth and distribution in Duluth and up the North Shore is our top priority.”
For Zarghami and his team, Northern Soda is a personal endeavor.
“It’s deeper than just soda,” he said. “We really want to create a family-friendly environment similar to our grandparents’ era. People can hang out, drink an old-fashioned soda pop or float, and just have a good time.”
Northern Soda Company, offering a 1950s style soda hand-crafted with cane sugar (not high-fructose corn syrup), will provide soda samples and offer their products for sale at Booth 954 in the Lake Superior Ballroom at the Duluth Boat, Sports, Travel & RV Show.

Fishing provides a great way for parents to bond with their children in the great outdoors. The value of first impressions has been well-documented, and parents who want their kids to inherit a love of fishing can take the following factors into consideration so their youngsters’ first fishing trips are successful.
familiar with your local rivers or lakes, visit a local outdoors store and ask for advice about which local bodies of water are home to fish that kids might be able to snag. Though it’s not imperative that kids catch a fish on their first trip, doing so might make them more enthusiastic about their next trip.

Fishing need not be an expensive hobby, but the costs can add up. Parents who are not sure if their kids will embrace fishing should look into local programs. Many towns, especially those with reputations for fishing, host free family fishing events. These events give parents an opportunity to see if their kids enjoy fishing before they start buying them gear.
Any fisherman would love to snag a trophy fish such as a largemouth bass on his or her first trip. And while that’s possible, it’s unlikely, especially for youngsters. Such fish tend to be difficult to catch, even for seasoned fishermen. When taking kids fishing for the first time, fish for something that’s somewhat simple to catch and capable of being caught throughout the day. If you aren’t
Don’t make the day all about catching fish, as even the most seasoned fishermen have their off days when nothing is biting. If the focus is on catching fish, kids might grow discouraged and not want to come back if they don’t catch anything on their first trip. Focus on the fun everyone is having rather than the fish they are (or aren’t) catching. Some youngsters might just be thrilled to spend a day out on the water with their parents. Encourage that enthusiasm and kids are more likely to remember their first fishing trips fondly.
Break time
Kids might not have a full day of fishing in them on their first trip. Frequent breaks to explore nearby nature, enjoy a snack or even toss a ball around can keep children from growing bored throughout the day.

The U.S. Fish & Wildlife Services’ 2016 National Survey of Fishing, Hunting and WildlifeAssociated Recreation unveiled that more than 103 million United States residents aged 16 or older participated in some sort of wildliferelated activity that year – the most recent year on record. Wildlife recreationists spend nearly $156.9 billion per year on their activities. With this in mind, those who have hunters, anglers or outdoorsmen and women on their birthday or holiday shopping lists may find that gifts facilitating these specific pursuits can be the ideal fit.
A visit to the Duluth Boat, Sports, Travel & RV Show can yield a bevy of appropriate gift ideas. For some inspiration, consider these gifts for the outdoor enthusiast.

the hunt. A set of durable new binoculars can give hunters an edge.
• Heated shoe insoles: Hunting and fishing often require long wait periods - sometimes in chilly weather. Heated shoe insoles and hand warmers can keep outdoorsmen warm.
• GPS/digital watch: Although many smartphones tell time and offer GPS services, lightweight watches may be more convenient than phones. For example, the Garmin Fenex Watch is waterproof and offers such functions as GPS, an altimeter, barometer and a digital compass.
• All-season tent: Camping out is not just a summer activity. A tent that is rated to withstand various temperatures and conditions can be an asset.
• Waders: Anglers sometimes need to get up close and personal with their prey. A sturdy pair of breathable waders
is ideal for those who venture out of the boat or off of the coast.
• Wool socks: They may be a basic item, but hikers, hunters and other sports people can’t stock up enough on warm, sweat-wicking wool socks that will keep their feet
comfortable and dry on all excursions.
• Folding knife: Knives are ideal for cutting fishing line, twigs for a campfire and much more. A sturdy, quality knife that fits easily in a pocket or backpack is a musthave for hunters, campers
and anglers.
• Water-resistant pouch: A day on the boat or near the water requires gear that can get wet without soiling items stored inside.
Choose a pouch that can fit a camera, keys, phone, and other necessities.
• Climbing stand: Hunters frequently spend time up in the trees to get a better view of oncoming game. Stationary tree stands may remain for the season, but lightweight offerings fold and can be transported from area to area.
ayaking is a water sport that can be beneficial to the mind and body. Just about anyone willing to spend a day on the water can benefit from learning about kayaking and how to get started with this rewarding activity.
K
novices take paddling lessons to hone their kayaking skills. Learning the proper technique can help people avoid strain on their neck and back and safeguard their arms from fatigue.
The history of kayaking is interesting. The word “kayak” means “hunter’s boat,” and the Inuit used to rely on these small vessels to catch food by sneaking up on their prey from the water’s edge. Some people still hunt and fish from their kayaks, but many are happy to use them for sightseeing and exercising.
“Paddlesports are increasing in popularity among Americans who desire to connect with the outdoors,” said Christine Fanning, executive director of The Outdoor Foundation. The Outdoor Foundation and The Coleman Company, Inc., found in a Special Report on Paddlesports that 22.9 million Americans enjoyed paddling on rivers, lakes, streams, and other waterways in 2018. Paddlesports include canoeing, rafting, kayaking, and stand-up paddling.
Learning how to kayak does not involve a significant initial financial investment. There’s a good chance a novice kayaker will not go out and buy a boat immediately. It’s important to first get a feel for the sport and then go from there.
Although it’s not absolutely necessary, it’s recommended that
Novices should practice on calm waters until their technique is honed. Lakes are a great place to learn, as rivers and places with mild currents can overwhelm those new to the sport.
One of the easiest ways to get introduced to kayaking is to go with an experienced paddler or tour company. Such companies charge a set price for an excursion that will provide transportation to the drop site as well as the equipment needed for the voyage. Tours may include travel down several miles of a relatively calm waterway, allowing novice kayakers to get a feel for paddling and take in the scenery.
Getting in and out of a kayak can be challenging for beginners. The resource Kayakpaddling. net offers helpful illustrations and animated tutorials about entering and exiting kayaks as well as paddling techniques and safety.
Kayakers should bring some essentials along. A dry pack can keep electronics, food and equipment dry. Remember to wear sunscreen and a hat to keep safe from the sun. A life vest also is essential.
Exercise, fresh air and enjoying the open water are just some of the many draws of kayaking.
