AN TAOISEACH TURNS SOD AT WHITECROSS NS
A
n Taoiseach Leo Vradkar recently turned the sod on the long-awaited and much-needed new school building at Whitecross NS, Julianstown. He was welcomed by pupils, staff and management, who were delighted that construction had actually begun on the project, in particular, retired principal Liam Burke, whose campaigning finally resulted in the progression of the plans and new school. Current principal Patrick Devlin, who took up the position in September, also welcomed An Taoiseach. The building, which has an estimated timeline of 18 months, according to Dept of Education, currently operates in an old school building and 10 prefabs. The go-ahead for the new school was given 13 years ago, and construction was scheduled for 2008, but was put on hold. Initial cost was €3 million, but it may now cost double that now. 6th class pupils Aisling, Abee and Daniel welcomed An Taoiseach to Whitecross, whilst Tom presented him with a history of the school, its inception, development and increase of students, from just 200 pupils in 2004 to 430 in 2018 along with 23 teachers. Whitecross NS was established in 1842 and served the area until 1951 when the present school was built, originally a 2-teacher school. The first prefab was erected in 1967. Pupils sang and entertained Taoiseach Vradkar, along with other politicians who included Mairead McGuinness MEP and Deputy Fergus O’Dowd, as well as local councillors from across the parties.
