REMEMBERING CHILDHOODS OF TIMES PAST

emembering Childhoods of Times Past’, a film made by young adult members of Duleek Foróige, has scooped a Gold Award at the National Foróige 'Citizenship' Competition, despite facing competition from 210 other entries! Late 2017, members of Duleek Foróige interviewed five senior members of the local community, namely Jim Curley, Michael Brodigan, Mary Connell, Cathy McGrane and Jimmy Lynch,about life for them as teenagers. The footage was then edited into an hour-long video documentary. The idea came about following the deaths of a number of senior members of the local community, including grandparents of some club members. Foróige got talking about the wealth of history, experiences and stories that were lost with their passing, and wondered how a permanent record of those experiences could

be achieved. From this discussion grew the idea for the video documentary. At the inaugural screening to a packed-to-capacity in Duleek Courthouse in March, the five celebrity interviewees treated as guests of honour! Afterwards, a variety of treats common in the ‘50s and ‘60s, including rice pudding, apple tart, and fruit cake were served. A second screening was held in May. ‘It certainly brought back a lot of memories,’ and ‘Made me think of my own childhood’ were audience comments. The project (making of
documentary, hosting a screening, and providing refreshments afterwards) was submitted to Foróige's National competition, 'Citizenship'. Winning first prize in this prestigious competition is a signifiant achievement for Duleek Foróige, who were runnersup in previous years, and demonstrates the wealth of talent and social responsibility that can be found amongst the youth of Duleek. A DVD of ‘Remembering Childhoods’ will be available for purchase from Duleek Fair Day Weekend onwards.
