Congratulations to the seven recently elected public representatives for the East Meath area!

Five of the seven are first timers, Tom Kelly regains his seat after a five year absence, and only one sitting councillor, Wayne Harding FF, was re-elected. Those now elected to sit on Meath County Council Laytown Bettystown area are Eimear Ferguson Sinn Féin, Wayne Harding Fianna Fáil, Paddy Meade Fine Gael, Stephen McKee Fianna Fáil, Sharon Keogan Independent and Sharon Tolan Fine Gael.

Eimear Ferguson got 1785 votes and was elected on the first count, as was Wayne Harding with 1535 votes. Sharon Keogan was elected on the second count with 1150 votes. Stephen McKee received 785 votes and was elected on the 8th count, as were Sharon Tolan with 837, Paddy Meade with 788 and Tom Kelly with 473 votes. The count took place in the Meath County Council offices in Johnstown, Navan.

Ferguson lives in Julianstown with her husband of 28 years, Andrew Towell, and their three children. She is the current chairperson of Meath Sinn Féin and is calling for more social housing in the area. Harding owns and runs the Village Inn in the centre of Slane. He is married to Yvette and has a two year old son. He lists getting the Slane bypass as a priority. Meade

works in the renewable energy sector and was a former IFA branch chairman. McKee is a secondary school teacher in Laytown and is married to Lorna. He previously worked with Senator Thomas Byrne and FF party HQ. Keogan is a business woman in Duleek where she operates O’Neill’s restaurant and bar. She works tirelessly for the community on a number of different issues and has run an advice centre in Duleek for years. Tolan lives in Bettystown and is involved with many community initiatives especially football. The mother of 3 wants to see a link road at the new Coláiste na hInse, Laytown.

Despite the torrential rain, there was a sizeable turnout for the recent launch of the Indaver Duleek 10K Road Race 2014 which takes place on Sunday 17 August at 10am.

Last year’s race attracted 500 runners.

Feedback was resoundingly positive, with the scenic route, high degree of organisation, very impressive ‘goody-bags’, t-shirts, Fair Day Festivities, prize-fund and afterrace spread of beautiful homemade food all competing as race highlights!

Indaver Ireland are again main sponsors.

Club Secretary Ruairí Nestor said that the club had been energized by the phenomenal success of 2013 and were committed to ensuring that this year’s race would be an even bigger occasion.

‘The atmosphere at the finish line last year was simply electric!’ recalled Ruairí. ‘In all my years living in Duleek, I have never witnessed an event to

bring the community together in such an invigorating and refreshing way as the Indaver Duleek 10K Road Race did.’

Bellewstown Heritage Group is currently compiling another book – this time on men from the general Bellewstown area who fought in the First World War. Already the group has very interesting war stories from about 30 men so far, all with different experiences of army life. Most of them survived and what they did after the war also makes great reading.

Always on the go, Duleek Women’s Forum attended the annual Bloom Festival in the Phoenix Park over June Bank Holiday weekend. All with different interests, the group strolled around individually checking out the plants and garden equipment.

So look out for amazing gardens in Duleek this summer!

Forum members have been busy knitting over the past few weeks, producing dozens of little knitted squares which will be made into a quilt and raffled later on.

Chair exercises for the over 55's

continue in the Parish Rooms on Tuesday mornings at 10.30am. A ‘Meditation Morning’ was held in Duleek Library which was much enjoyed by all. Normally the Forum closes down for the summer but this year meetings may be held to continue the social interaction over the lazy months of summer.

St. Cianan’s Success keeps on coming

Success just keeps coming for St Cianan’s Boxing Club, Duleek who are celebrating their first Irish title!

Lauryn Kavanagh, who joined the club this season, previously boxing for Tredagh Boxing Club, Drogheda, brought the club this huge honour. Lauryn lost out in last year’s final by one point, and this year she was determined not to be beaten. She dominated the fight from start to finish, working behind her jab and out-classing her opponent, winning all three rounds .

Club founder and coach, Mark O’Toole said, ‘Having Lauryn in the club is a great asset to as she puts in so much. She’s a great inspiration

for any girl willing to learn the art of boxing.’

St Cianan’s boxers also recently won 3 Silver and 2 gold in this year’s prestigous Micheal Andrews Tournament,6 gold and 5 silver in the Louth Open Championships and 7 gold and 4 silver in the Meath Open Championships. Then they went on to win 3 Leinster titles.

Mark went on to thank coaches Paul Finnegan, Brendan O Neill and Thomas Brodigan for their commitment. ‘Without your help our successes would not be possible,’ said Mark, who also thanked the community and sponsors for their support.

Duleek Fair Day takes place on August 16 and 17. Now in its 5th year, the annual festival has grown into a two-day event, much enjoyed by the wider district.

Behind the actual weekend is a hard working committee which not only plans the event, but organises fund raising events during the year so as to offer a free weekend of entertainment to the community. Table quiz coming up!

Activities kick off on Saturday afternoon with The Rex Factor, a Fun Dog Show and The Wacky Quacky Duck Derby on the River Nanny, with a very special event (still a secret!) on Saturday night with live music on the green.

Duleek Girls and Boys National School Reunion also takes place and welcoming back past pupils and friends to the area and recalling childhood memories.

As the old school building will be demolished next year the school will be opened on Saturday for all to visit, with a night of nostalgia, fun, food and dance in the Westcourt Hotel.

A special Memorial Mass will be held on Sunday for deceased pupils.

Indaver Duleek & District 10k run takes place on Sunday 17.

Local artists exhibit their work over the weekend, and children are being encouraged to take part in a painting and writing competition themed ‘School Days’, on display during Fair Day. Sunday’s Fair will see a myriad of local stalls on the green, and a number of outdoor activities. Duleek Senior Citizen's Outings Committee are presenting their Annual Outdoor Concert on Sunday June 15, which always proves to be a most enjoyable day out.

Co-inciding with Patron Sunday and Father's Day, the annual fun event takes place in The Carranstown Lodge, Drogheda Road, Duleek starting at 3pm approx. Admission €5 payable at the entrance. Free admission for children and carparking is also free.

There’s a long list of guest artists appearing on the day including The Nashville Rambler himself Mr Ray Murtagh, Tommy McGarry, Liam Bridgeman, Maurice Heavey , Tommy Meehan, PJ + Friends plus some local acts.

Vets are offering a reduced cost, with the balance met by Mollies Animal Rescue. Unfortunately the uptake on this worthwhile procedure has been slow in this area, so the offer has been extended.

Children at the Simpson Stage School class in Duleek Celebrating 20 years of her successful stage school with a Gala Performance, Mary Simpson was rightly proud of her students’ achievements.

Over 100 boys and girls aged between 3-18 years who attend classes in Drogheda and Duleek took to the stage in a dazzling display of song and dance in The TLT Theatre.

Mary, herself an award-winning international singing star, is assisted by her daughter Kym with the stage school classes, as well as Grainne Thompson and Aoife McGroggan from Duleek.

The team is currently organising Strictly Come Dancing for parents of their students which will take place at Hal-

loween. ‘There’s great interest in this competition which will raise funds for our talented students to attend competitions, even internationally!’ explained Mary.

Students at Simpson Stage School have reached the World Finals of dancing twice so far, but haven’t had funds to get them there, unfortunately. ‘We want to reward these young winners with the trophies they deserve by allowing them to compete,’ she said. Currently Mary herself provides funding for travel and costumes.

Simpson Stage School classes are in the Parish Centre Duleek every Friday from 45.30pm.

Duleek’s Geraldine Flynn, currently president of Drogheda Soroptimists, recently organised a charity walk in sunny Ibiza!

Teaming up with an old friend who lives in Ibiza a, the pair decided to unite their respective walking groups and hike the lesser known parts of the Mediterranean’s ‘Party Island’.

The Irish group flew out in May and met up with some of Ibiza’s International Walksing Groups with members from Ireland, Spain, Denmark, Philippines and America. They traversed the countryside, exploring beautiful and peaceful rural and coastal surroundings.

They also dropped into Ibiza town where the a Medieval Festival was taking place. There was plenty of socialising, and the week finished with a charity dinner in aid of the Association of Ibiza and Formentera Against Cancer.

The local group is looking for-

Geraldine Flynn ward to a reciprocal visit by the Ibiza group early in 2015.

‘These twin walking holidays will bring much needed social and economic benefits to both local areas,’ said Geraldine.

Michelle McLaughlin from Duleek is set to swim across the English Channel from Dover to Calais in France this July!

Michelle is one of seven deaf swimmers from all around Ireland who will tackle the gruelling swim to raise funds for the Irish D e a f Wo m e n ’ s G r o u p (IDWG).

Michelle has been in training for the swim for the past year, and has two bronze medals from the European Deaf Swimming Championships in 1986.

Training in Dublin and Aura pool, Drogheda, Michelle reckons that the swim will take 14-16 hours to complete, with each swimmer doing a two hour stint in the water.

Married to Eugene, the couple has

five children from 7-16 years. The swim is a big commitment for the busy mother who is raising awareness of the challenges faced by deaf women in particular. The IDWG provides information on events, workshops and services facilitated by deaf sign language interpreters to deaf women all over Ireland. The group organises training workshops in assertiveness and empowerment for deaf women to fully participate in Irish society.

A sponsored walk has raised over €1,000 for Duleek/Bellewstown GFC’s Gaelic4Girls and Under Age programmes. Over 100 people participated with the club’s under age players leading the way. The much needed funds will go towards the provision of equipment and jerseys for the fast expanding juvenile section of club.

This initiative has seen playing numbers at U10 and U12 increase dramatically.

As the popular Gaelic4Girls programme finished up recently, a little party was held. Each of the 66 girls received a colourful t-shirt, a certificate and goody bag.

Refreshments were served to parents who ensure that the players attend training and games each week. And many thanks go to the volunteers who provided both the training and refreshments.

Spring leagues are drawing to a close, with U12 teams winning most of their games and the U10 teams improving greatly. All teams welcomed new players onto the squads and are looking forward to the autumn leagues.

CF 10K Walk/Run

An update on the amount raised to date from the Cystic Fibrosis walk/run in Duleek recently - a massive €20,206.81 has been raised so far! Thanks to all who donated or took part in any way.

Arthritis Exercise at Oldbridge

Get exercising! Is the message from a local arthritis group which organises a leisurely walk through Oldbridge Estate, Donore, every Saturday morning at 11am.

‘It’s time to exercise as the benefits are many,’ said organiser Marie Magee. The walk is designed to exercise the body without putting undue strain on joints that may suffer from arthritis. Associated with Arthritis Ireland, the Drogheda Walking group meets every Saturday at 11am outside the main door of Oldbridge House. Congrats to Duleek pharmacist Kathy Maher who was elected as President of the Irish Pharmaceutical Union recently! ‘that I am honoured and grateful to be elected as President of the Irish Pharmacy Union, which has over 2,100 members,’ said Kathy, who has been involved with the IPU since 2002, having experience on all of the committees. She was VicePresident from 2012-2014, Honorary Treasurer from 20102012 and was on the Pharmacy Contractors' Committee from 20072012.

Kathy graduated from Pharmacy in Queen’s University, Belfast in 1996. After pre-registration she worked in Dublin before moving to Duleek Pharmacy in 2000, which she bought in 2005.

Kathy is also involved with the organisation of the IPU National Pharmacy Conference and was a tutor with the Irish Centre for Continuing Pharmaceutical Education for many years.

‘I hope that we can succeed in pharmacy having in a pivotal role in a successful healthcare system, with expansion of the role of pharmacist meaning better accessibility of care to patients,

Kathy Maher and freeing up GP time to allow more complex patients to be managed,’ explained Kathy.

‘Patients prefer to be looked after in a community setting and a recent UK study found that 1 in 7 GP visits and 1 in 12 A+E visits could've been dealt with in a community pharmacy. I look forward to seeing more medicines available without prescription and seeing the roll out of services like a Minor Ailment Scheme, Medicine Use Reviews, extended Vaccinations provided in pharmacy.’

As well as working hard in the pharmacy, Kathy likes to relax at home with husband Tom and the 3 children (aged 3,6 &8) and she runs 3-4 miles several times a week!

Bellewstown Races Friday 4th, Saturday 5th & Sunday 6th July Bellewstown Racecourse is the world’s oldest known racecourse, and we can be rightly proud of it in this area! With magnificent views of the Mountains of Mourne and the Irish Sea, Bellewstown has something to offer all ages and interests.

The tradition of summer racing at Bellewstown dates back centuries and the first record of racing here appears in the August edition of the Dublin Gazette and the Weekly Courier in 1726. Year after year this unique meeting attracts a wide range of jockeys, owners and trainers who relish the challenges afforded to them on The Hill.

This superb one mile and one furlong left handed course, in a truly unique location, features

both flat and hurdle racing.

Bellewstown Races are synonymous with top class racing, wonderful summer evenings, family entertainment and ladies day races which add to the fun.

As always, there is superb racing to enjoy, as well as bar and dining facilities in the enclosure. And outside the carnival atmosphere and fairground rides add to the festival atmosphere.

GAA Duck Derby

A Duck Derby in aid of Duleek Bellewstown GFC takes place on Saturday, 12 July at 3pm on the River Nanny at the Ashbourne Road, Duleek (back of Abbeylands Estate).

This event will hopefully raise vital funds for the development of club facilities. Ducks cost €2 each. This will be a fun-filled family event with music and goodies for the kids. All are welcome, so bring the family and cheer on your ducks!

This year’s GAA Cúl Camp takes place in Duleek pitch from 7- 11th of July. Book online and save €5.

Depression talk

A Duleek woman, Naomi, is behind the talk by leading psychiatrist, Dr Stephen Critchlow, which will be held in Barlow House, Drogheda, on Saturday 28 June.

Dr Critchlow works in Old Age Psychiatry in the Belfast area, and will speak on depression and living with mental illness. He aims to educate family members and carers and equip members of the community to provide effective and compassionate care to anyone faced with mental health challenges.

A new club for ladies over 50 years has been formed for those living in the Stamullen/Julianstown area. It takes place on Mondays from 11am in the Parish Rooms Stamullen – know as The Golden Girls. All welcome to attend.

Congratulations to local Duleek athlete Keith Marks on his qualification for the European youth Olympic trials, Keith will represent Ireland in Baku Azerbaijan in the high jump event.

Also congratulations to local Cushenstown athletes who completed in the Leinster schools track and field competition recently. Medal winners were Caoimhe Doyle gold, Shane Joyce gold and silver, Keith Marks gold, Elizabeth Moorland gold, Shannon Sheehy gold, Zoë Mohan silver and Shauna White silver.

Congrats to local man Shane Callaghan who is making a name for himself writing and staging plays in his adopted city of Barcelona in Spain! His proud parents Maria and Barney, farmers and owners of The Farm Shop, look forward to him bringing his dramatic productions to Duleek in September.

a Was in fact that PPI was optional made clear to you? a Were you told you had to take out ppi at the same time as the loan? a Did the sales advisor ask if you had any other insurance which would cover this loan? a Were you unemployed or self employed at the time of the loan ? a Were you working 16hrs or less when you were sold the PPI ? a Were you sold ppi when you were on contract work? a Were details of your medical history asked for? a Did your sales advisory tell you about any significant exclusion under the policy ie. The exclusion which states you will not be covered for any Pre-existing medical conditions? a Were you led to believe that your chances of securing the loan were better if you purchased PPI ?

Loans over 6 years old: The Financial ombudsman can not assist you with loans over 6 years old.

You can still try and claim a refund of the premiums. You may need a solicitor or a PPI claims company. Only deal with either upon you winning the case. No win no fee bases. So if you were sold PPI in 2002 believing it was compulsory but did not find out till 2012-2013 that it wasn’t you may be able to take legal action. Banks don’t like costly court cases and bad publicity and it would be very much in their interest to refund the PPI Premium on threat of legal action.

How To Get A Refund: Write to the bank and the credit card company that sold you the ppi.

Tell them in writing why you think it was mis-sold to you and ask for a refund of the premium. If your bank refuses to give you a full refund you can send a complaint to the Financial Services Ombudsman (F50) FSO Contact Details 1890-882090 or email – enquiries@financialombudsman.ie You can pop into my office for a complaints application form.
