MEALS ON WHEELS APPEAL L ike Old Mother Hubbard in nursery rhymes, the cupboard is bare at Duleek Meals on Wheels! The voluntary group, which delivers meals three times per week to 32 local residents, needs cash donations immediately! In addition to a total Health Board annual grant of just €750, Meals on Wheels charges just €5 per week for the three hot meals delivered to the door of the clients on Mondays, Wednesday and Fridays. They also hold an annual Church Gate Collection, but as of now, there is no cash in the kitty to provide meals until the end of the year. Occasionally local groups hold fundraisers, such as the Credit Union table quizzes. All money raised in the area stays in the area. Donations can be made directly to the charity’s CU account in Duleek. Meals are prepared in Duleek Parish Centre by 30 volunteer cooks, and are then delivered by volunteer drivers (currently more are needed).

But along with the rising cost of food, donations have dried up to a large extent. ‘We do get donations from the public occasionally, and our local politicians – Cllr Sharon Keogan and Cllr Stephen McKee – have allocated us funding from their Discretionary Fund, but we desperately need more to provide this essential service,’ explained organiser Noreen. ‘If not, we may be forced to outsource the meals in the future!’ ‘Under Health & Safety we have regular check-ups regarding food preparation,

as well as extra training and updating equipment. We bought a new cooker and fridge this year. The new red tape makes it much more expensive to run the service,’ she continued. ‘Letters looking for financial support from businesses and politicians are currently being sent out. We do the cooking and deliveries and would love to have a fundraising committee in place also. If anybody is interested in fundraising for Duleek Meals on Wheels on a regular or one-off basis, please contact Rita on 0863745436 or Mathilda on 041-9823205.’
