CRIME PREVENTION

t only takes a burglar three minutes to go through your house – even with the alarm going off! This was the frightening statistic put forward by Sgt Dean Kerins at the recent Crime Prevention evening in Duleek Courthouse. Along with Sgt Kerins, there were speakers on home security, road safety with the dark evenings approaching, and social media safety. A Sextortion video from Interpol was shown, the first screening of its kind to the public. Saying that there is always an increase in crime this time of year, Sgt Kerins said, ‘The run up to Christmas is always a busy time for burglars. Between 5-11pm is when most burglaries occur. A lot of time it’s compliancy when people say ‘I’m just popping out for a moment...’ and don’t lock the door.’ Burglars tend to target the main bedroom and hot press first of all – and this can easily be done within three minutes. Most people keep valuables in their bedrooms, and many older people still hid items or cash in the hot press. If they have time, they will search the rest of the house.

‘Lessen the risk that burglars will chose your house by locking doors and windows,’ advised Sgt Kerins. ‘Two thirds of burglars enter through doors which are either left open, unlocked or faulty.’ He also suggested putting on the lights, saying that burglars hate lit up areas. ‘Bright LED lights are cheap to run, so keep them on. Tools and electrical items should also be marked or recorded.’ The value of goods reported stolen in Ireland from July 16 – June 17 was as follows: €7 million in jewellery, €3.5 in cash, €1million in tools, €1 million in electronics, €1/4

million in farming equipment. It’s not all bad news, though, added Sgt Kerins. ‘Communities are fighting back and reclaiming their own peace of mind through initiatives like Text Alert Systems or Community Alert groups, which are all supported by Gardai. ‘We would encourage communities and individuals to sign up to these in their locality.’ The Duleek crime prevention evening was just one in a series being carried out all across the county.
