Organisers are clearly delighted to have bagged one of only 8 extra days awarded

by Horse Racing Ireland in 2018.The extra day will be added to the July meeting, making it a four-day festival for the first time, running 4-7 July.‘We were very lucky to get this extra day, as we really need it financially,’ said General Manager, Kevin Coleman.

Meath CC chair Congrats to newly elected chair of Meath County Council, Cllr Tom Kelly from Laytown. This is the first time in his 34 years as an elected representative that Cllr Kelly has taken the county chair. Congrats to Cllr Wayne Harding, Slane, who is chair of the Laytown Bettystown Electoral area, with Cllr Sharon Keogan vice chair. The Boundary Committee has deemed that Millrace should return to the Duleek electoral area, and not Ashbourne where it was moved in 2013.

Well done to the hard-working Duleek teens, who are volunteering to clean up the village and generally tidy up over the summer. It might not be supercool to be out cleaning, weeding or pushing wheelbarrows in Duleek for 3 sessions each week, they all do what is asked. The teen initiative was set up

by Cllr Sharon Keogan, who is treating the teens to daily lunch whilst they are working, as well as a few ‘treat trips’ for all of their hard work.

Kate Kennedy A pioneering woman who changed American history – and with a Duleek connection – is Kate Kennedy (1827-90), a 19th century teacher.

She was born in Gaskinstown, Duleek, into a prosperous farming family. But following the death of her father in 1841 and the Famine, the family moved to America where she became a teacher. She rose to the position of principal of the Cosmopolitan Grammar School but as a woman, she was only entitled to primary school wages. Kate began campaigning on behalf of women teachers, eventually winning this battle in 1874, securing equal pay for women.

She was also the first woman in California to run for state-wide public office, and was probably the first woman to join a trade union in America!

At a recent gathering of the ‘Kennedy Clan’ in San Francisco, the Duleek connection was represented by Pat Kennedy, Navan, whose sons work within a few miles of Kate’s birthplace - Aidan is Plant Manager in Indaver, Duleek (he is a 1st cousin 3 times removed!), and Robert, works in Boyne Valley Foods, Platin. ‘Kate was a woman ahead of her time, and achieved so much,’ said Aidan.

Family members have visited Kate’s grave in San Francisco, and it is hoped to commemorate this great woman in her home town of Duleek in the future.

An Opening Ceremony for World Meeting of Families 2018 will take place in Duleek Church on the evening of Tuesday 21 August. This ceremony will be simultaneous across all 26 Dioceses of Ireland, with the lead ceremony taking place in Dublin. At 7pm there will be Church bells to lead into the Evening Prayer at 7.30pm.

Representing the Republic of Ireland at Slimming World’s Couple of the Year 2018, was Duleek couple, Michael and Regina Nolan, who lost a combined total of 17 stone 12lb!

Michael and Regina Nolan believe the secret of their success was getting support from one another at home as well as in group every week.

Michael, 40, who lost 8st 12.5lbs, and Regina, 43, who lost 8st 13.5lbs, realised that it made sense to tackle their weight together, as a couple.

‘From the outset we started enjoying healthier home-cooked meals and it definitely wasn’t as difficult as I expected it to be. In fact, we could still enjoy family favourites by

making healthy swaps. The change in both of us has been remarkable – it’s like we both have a whole new lease of life!’

‘Joining Slimming World was one of the best decisions we have ever made –we’ve become much more active and even started running and training for a marathon,’ said Regina.

‘We couldn’t believe it when we made it to the finals!’

Susan Fitzgerald, who runs the Duleek Slimming World group, is rightly proud of them becoming one of the top 8 couples in the final saying, ‘They motivate not only each other, but the rest of the group, too.’

Simon Coleman exhibition

A centenary retrospective of the work of Duleek artist, Simon Coleman RHA, was displayed in Duleek Courthouse recently, with works on loan from the owners.

Over 50 paintings and sketches were on view, with critics saying that Coleman’s work depicted a way of life now in memory only. Simon was born in 1916 and died in 1995. He trained in the Metrolpolitan School of Art in Dublin and studied at the Royal Hibernian Academy of Arts, of which he becaome a member in 1942. One of his most famous paintings is of the first sitting of the Council of State meeting in 1940, commissioned

by Dr Douglas Hyde, Ireland’s first president.

The exhibition was organised by Duleek Development Association, Duleek Revival Programme, Duleek Courthouse Committee and Duleek Heritage Group, with special thanks going to Frank Andrews and Derek Clark for assistance in curating the exhibition.

A number of Simon Coleman's family and relatives attended,with Kevin Coleman offering a few words about his talented forebearer. The exhibition was opened by renowned screenplay writer and former Duleek resident, Shane Conaughton. Refreshments were courtesy of Europsar, Londis, Sage & Stone and Dwyer Electric, with flowers by Christine Teeling.

They’re quackers! St Mary's GFC Duck Derby was a resounding success as a massive crowd gathered on the banks of the Boyne to cheer on their ducks.

Thanks to Meath River Rescue without whom the event couldn’t have taken place. Thanks to those behind the scenes and all who supported it in any way. Féile takes place 29 June - 1 July, with St Mary's GFC a host club, with visiting teams from Ballerin GAA, Co Derry and Hertfordshire GAA, England.

Duleek Senior Citizens Outings Committee will hold their Annual Sponsored Walk on Sunday 29 July, starting from the village green at 3pm sharp. It will follow the usual route with refreshments served en route.

A Clothes Appeal organised by St Mary’s GFC, Donore, was an unprecedented response! Thanks to everybody who dropped off bags of clothes to the clubhouse over the past few weeks.Funds raised went towards the Féile campaign. Féile Peile na nÓg runs from Friday 29 June – Sunday 1 July. ADAMS WISH

Adam’s wish is certainly coming true as he and his family enjoyed a holiday in Florida where he visited theme parks and swam with dolphins.

The family wishes to thank absolutely everybody who made this possible for Adam, with an extra thank you going to Jackie Leddy and Sharon Keoghan for organising various events. Alzheimer's appointment Congratulations to Duleek man, Noel Heeney, who has been appointed to the Board of Directors of Alzheimer's society of Ireland.

This is a massive honour for Noel, who has vowed to continue to work hard for people living with Alzheimer's disease and their families.

‘MEMORIES FOR MY CHILDREN’

A fundraiser to help mum Kim Allen make lifetime memories with her children, Dean 16 and Lauren (Lulu) 11, took place in Navan recently, organised by childhood friends Sandra Hayes, Patricia Thorpe, Sarah Brereton, Melissa Lawlor and Mary Duffy from Kentstown, Navan and Skyrne. Together the ladies worked tirelessly to put together a fantastic night with music, and auction and a raffle, which included vouchers, services, items and even a signed Pele top!

Dip in the Nip takes place on Sunday 9 September at a secret location in this area! This is the seventh year that this all-female Dip has taken place, which many describe as ‘an empowering experience’.

Funds raised go towards improving the treatment and outcomes of people with cancer in the northeast it truly does make a massive and real difference to those fighting cancer. A message from Alana's mammy Lesley. ‘Our precious daughter is making her return to Crumlin hospital to finish her treatment. Her heart has been strong despite having to deal with sepsis infection. We are so proud of her and we hope she will never need a transplant and her own heart stays strong.

A summer camp in Skyrne NS takes place from 9-13 July, an action-packed week filled with activities such as sports, arts and crafts, orienteering, obstacle courses, wacky water day with water fights, inflatable Bouncey castles and obstacle course, cookery and fun fun fun!

Boat trips will shortly be possible from a pontoon close to Drogheda Garda Station all the way up to Newgrange.

Stephen Early, Donore, explained that the area at Horse Bridge, close to Oldbridge House, is currently being dredged and that the canal could possibly be opened up this year. Three years ago a ‘Game of Thrones’ boat was launched, with a second being added recently. The boat caters for individuals to parties to corporate days out.
