DRUG-FREE DULEEK A

Task Force based in Duleek, counselling services and a dedicated Garda Liaison Officer were the outcomes of a heavily attended anti-drugs and mental health/suicide meeting in Duleek recently. Duleek’s new Task Force to combat drug use in the area and promote positive mental health will meet on Tuesday 15 January at 8pm in Duleek Courthouse. All welcome. The packed courthouse heard from a number of speakers including organiser, Cllr Sharon Keogan, Cllr Stephen McKee and Cllr Eimear Ferguson, as well as Lisa Gavillet of the North East Regional Drug & Task Force, and Marie Johnston, SOSAD co-ordinator Navan, who urged people with suicidal thoughts to speak to somebody about it. Brave local young man Eoin Morris shared his personal struggle with addiction, and also advised people to seek help and thanked his family for their support. Superintendent Fergus Dwyer of the Ashbourne

division agreed to work towards putting a Garda Liaison Officer in place in the area. ‘Drugs are a nationwide problem and the Gardaí intervene at the end of the line. A multi-agency approach is needed with the consent and support of the community. Young people must have the courage to say ‘Drugs are not for me.’ As a result of Cllr Keogan’s public meeting, a number of concrete actions have been put in place – Fr John and Duleek Dev Ass have allowed the Portacabin at the Parochial House to be used for full-time counselling services where free services to promote better mental health and well-being will be made available. An out-of-hours service will be provided in conjunction with SOSAD. Set-up costs will be approx €60,000, with a further €2,500 for lighting and heating. Fundraisers will be organised to keep the services running, and grant-funding sought. Policy formation, intervention
