he lowest crime rates in County Meath have been recorded Duleek and Donore already this year, with burglaries down 70% and thefts in general down 30%! These are the two principal categories recorded in the greater Duleek Garda station area, according to Insp Michael Dorrigan, acting District Officer Ashbourne. Based on crime figures for the first 10 weeks of 2018, Duleek / Donore areas are at the bottom of the scale, with the least amount of crime in the county, thanks to the recently-installed CCTV system, it is widely believed. ‘Whilst CCTV certainly is a brilliant asset, there is a combination of factors at work, such as Operation Thor with additional check points and patrols, as well as ongoing active surveillance by local Gardaí,’ he added. Whilst national media reported negatively about the CCTV system in these areas, local residents and businesses are happy that they are here to stay.’ The CCTV has been a wonderful success. our response to the high level of crime in our area. We will make no apologies to anyone for keeping our citizens and our businesses safe,’ said Cllr Sharon Keogan, who was instrumental in achieving the installation of the Gardamonitored system last July. Cllr Keogan said that the crime figures were released at a recent Community Policing meeting in Ashbourne. However, she expressed her disappointment that that no monies have been allocated to the initiative for the provision of the maintenance contract for the CCTV for Duleek & Donore from the Indaver Fund this year. The 10 year maintainence contract was agreed by the committee in situ in 2016

at a cost of €2,400 per year. Duleek & District Text Alert has written to the committee requesting a review. ‘This is a significant cost and one which would be difficult to raise for the group on an annual basis,’ concluded Cllr Keogan. Sgt Dean Kerrins of Duleek sees a ‘noticable decrease’ in crime in the area. ‘The figures speak for themselves. The cameras are an obvious deterrent. They are reassuring, particularly for the older generation, who voice this at community meetings and gatherings. The public has a fear of crime and the cameras are an effective tool in the fight against crime. Overall, I would say that 99% of people are happy with the cameras.’
