Wilson Recreation Center 20th Anniversary Opening in 1999, the Wilson Recreation Center has become the primary destination for Duke students, faculty & staff to engage in recreation and physical activity. It is home to our 5 program areas (Aquatics, Fitness & Wellness, Intramurals, Outdoor Adventures, and Sport Clubs) and the academic department of Health, Wellness and Physical Education (HWPE). The Wilson Recreation Center serves over 18,000 members and hosts an average of over 1,300 visits per day.

AQUATICS FIRST AID/CPR/AED The course gives individuals the knowledge and skills necessary to recognize and provide basic care for breathing, cardiac emergencies, injuries, and sudden illnesses.

LIFEGUARD COURSE The American Red Cross Lifeguarding course is designed to teach individual skills and knowledge to help prevent, recognize, and respond to aquatic emergencies.

LEARN-TO-SWIM The American Red Cross Learn-to-Swim Program provides instruction to help swimmers of all ages and abilities develop their swimming and water safety skills.

Masters Swim The Duke Aquatics Masters team is for those looking for a fun and engaging workout in the pool or looking to challenge themselves and get back their competitive edge.

CLASS DESCRIPTIONS CARDIO/DANCE/TONING AQUA BLAST: Interval training in the pool.

H.I.I.T. (High Intensity Interval Training): Intervals using bodyweight and resistance equipment to train both your aerobic and anaerobic systems.

HH-HIIT (Hip Hop HIIT): No techno or pop, only Hip Hop music.

KICKBOXING: A non-contact, martial arts-style cardio workout.

MP (Muscle Pump): A strength endurance workout that may use weights, bands, tubing, steps, and stability balls for a total body workout.

MPX (Muscle Pump Xpress): Shorter version of Muscle Pump (45-minutes).

RHYTHM HIIT: A music-driven, high intensity interval class (not a dance class).

TRX: Suspension training created by Navy SEALS that leverages gravity and body weight to create a total body workout.

U-JAM: A choreographed workout that combines the grittiness and energy of urban dance with fitness.

ZUMBA: A Latin-inspired dance workout centered around high energy music with multiple tempo changes.

MIND/BODY BARRE BLAST: Pilates mat exercises combined with short cardio intervals and barre work for the lower body.

HATHA YOGA: Appropriate for all levels, as it incorporates slower-paced stretching and breathing exercises.

PILATES BARRE: Pilates mat exercises combined with barre work for the lower body.

PILATES BURN: Faster paced Pilates plus barre-style exercises to target thighs, glutes, and abdominals; no barre required.

POWER YOGA: Emphasizes movement and stretching while synchronizing breathing to transition from one pose to the next.

YOGA/PILATES: Hatha yoga that incorporates Pilates exercises for abdominal, back, and hip strength.

YOGA SCULPT: Uses light/medium weights to add elements of strength, endurance, and body awareness to your practice.

CYCLING CYCLING: Our classic 45-minute ride of hills, flats, sprints, and intervals.

CYCLING EXPRESS: A 30-minute express ride.

TR: Our Theme Rides use different music genres either throughout the class or in a face-off between artists. Choose your side and ride.

XTRAIN: Cross train using our Functional Training Space. This unique class combines an indoor cycle workout for lower body and a variety of functional exercises to improve strength and power in your upper body and core.

PHYSICAL EDUCATION The Department of Health, Wellness and Physical Education (HWPE) provides academic opportunities to students through a wide variety of activity and lecture-based classes. Classes are offered on both West and East Campus and change on a semester basis.

ACTIVITY COURSES Students enjoy P.E. activity classes for the high level of student-instructor interaction, the accountability of having an activity class built into their academic schedule, and the progressive scaffolding of information, skills, and workouts.

Students may earn no more than 1.0 credit from P.E. activity courses; however, they may take as many courses as desired and repeat courses. Taking a P.E. lecture course does not count toward this limit. Graduate students may register for P.E. activity classes with DGS permission but will receive no credit.
