THE PROCESS OF SELF REFLECTION Every January, millions of people engage in the process of self-reflection and make New Year’s resolutions. For example, lose weight, start exercising, drink less alcohol, or be a better partner or parent, to name a few. Some resolutions will stick; most won’t. But in the resolution process is a critical self-reflection and a desire to improve, at least in some areas. This January, the Duke Doctor of Physical Therapy program must do its process of self-reflection as 2024 is the year that it will undergo the required 10-year accreditation review by the Commission on Accreditation of Physical Therapy Education (CAPTE).

CAPTE is an accrediting agency that is nationally recognized by the U.S. Department of Education (USDE) and the Council for Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA) and the agency that provides accreditation for physical therapy education programs in the U.S. According to the CAPTE website; accreditation is a process used in the U.S. to ensure the quality of students' education. In other words, accreditation is a process to determine the aspects of the DPT program that we are doing well and where we need to improve.

To be sure, this process started more than six months ago. It truly is a Herculean effort as every aspect of the program is critically evaluated and detailed, including the curriculum, budget, faculty qualifications, staff support, equipment and resources, space, and

governance. But the challenging part is that our team does most of the work through a detailed self-study report, frequently resulting in a 200-page document that the CAPTE review team combed through in assessing program quality and fidelity. In addition to the self-study, a rigorous 2-day onsite visit by the CAPTE review team is performed in March. The CAPTE reviewers will interview faculty, staff, students, and university leadership. This reaccreditation process is so vital that we have a mock onsite visit practice scheduled in February and have engaged the help of a consultant, Susan Deusinger, PT, PhD, FAPTA, former program director at Washington University in St. Louis, to aid us in this work.

As you read, the CAPTE self-study report has likely been finalized and successfully submitted. A special thanks to Tiffany Hilton, PT, PhD, J. FARLEY program director, Joanne Farley, senior curriculum coordinator, and Allison Walls, curriculum staff specialist, for leading this arduous task. But in reflection, although complex, this process has and will help us as a program and division improve and provide better education and clinical experiences to our students, ultimately training A. WALLS smarter and more competent, socially aware, and compassionate practitioners that will lead our profession to new heights. This process has also helped us envision what we could ultimately accomplish. Even though our program is over 80 years old, CS Lewis once said, "You are never too old to set another goal or to dream a new dream." Maybe equally as well noted by Frank Sinatra, “The best is yet to come.” And thanks to CAPTE (I think) for reminding us of that.

A Tribute to Elia E. Villanueva

BY PATRICIA C. SMITH Emy was an integral part of Duke's Physical Therapy Program for over 40 years, beginning as a student in the late 1950s and concluding with her retirement from the faculty in June 2001. She was a key contributor in transforming the Physical Therapy Program from a fifteen-month certificate program to a master's degree, and subsequently to the current Doctor of Physical Therapy degree.

Those fortunate to be one of Emy’s student knows first-hand how passionate she was about teaching and sharing her deep knowledge and experience in anatomy, biomechanics and physical therapy. Emy’s enthusiasm, creativity and dedication to teaching continues to impact the lives of her former students and the thousands of patients they have treated. Her positive impact on the physical therapy profession is far-reaching and immeasurable.

As a teacher, Emy was unforgettable. She was demanding of her students while showing compassion and a deep caring for them as individuals. Emy strived for excellence in her work and expected the same from her students. She was committed to making sure that each of her students left Duke with an education that prepared them to make a difference in people’s lives.

Although we are deeply saddened by her loss, we are grateful for the opportunity to know Emy as a teacher, mentor, colleague and friend. We are all better for knowing her and are challenged to honor her legacy by striving for excellence in all that we do.

Shifting the Paradigm: Restorative Justice as a Framework for Workforce Well-Being, is a year-long pilot program organized by the Office for Faculty and co-sponsored by the Office of Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion. Seven faculty groups were chosen, and each team participated in interactive classroom training through the fall to develop and implement restorative practices in their home units throughout the spring.

Duke Doctor of Physical Therapy faculty members Dr. Amy Pastva and Dr. Corey Simon have been appointed Duke Clinical Research Institute (DCRI) members and will help transform practices to improve patient outcomes in the musculoskeletal and surgical sciences. They will serve as faculty in DCRI’s Musculoskeletal and Surgical Sciences (MASS) Therapeutic Area, a unit with rich experience in both traditional and pragmatic clinical trials, observational studies, and secondary analyses. Dr. Steve George is the Therapeutic Area Lead for MASS. DCRI unites the clinical expertise and academic leadership of a premier teaching hospital with the capabilities of a full-service contract research organization.

To expand our Doctor of Physical Therapy Faculty Development Residency, we signed an agreement with Northeastern University to help prepare more highly effective PT professionals for faculty and administrative roles. The partnership extends Duke's rich academic expertise and leadership in credentialed residency and fellowship programs to prepare more PT professionals for academia. Duke DPT will facilitate orientation, mentoring, and assessment of Faculty Development Residents while collaborating with Northeastern faculty to deliver didactic modules that include classroom management, test writing, academic advising, higher education structure, educational assessment, accreditation, and academic service and scholarship.

In collaboration with the Duke Health Department of Rehabilitation Services, we have created a new Hybrid Orthopaedic Physical Therapy Residency Program for physical therapists who have earned their DPT degree and seek to advance their knowledge and skills. The program is now seeking applicants to be part of the new one-year program that launches in the fall of 2024. This is the first step in our efforts to expand post-professional residency and fellowship training opportunities to more clinicians through a new distance-based residency model.

Director of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Dr. Tiffany Adams shared an up-close view of a rare group of physical therapist educators as part of the Interdisciplinary Rehabilitation Research Seminar Series on October 18, presenting PT Unicorns – Exploring the Lived Experiences of Black Female Physical Therapy Faculty in the U.S. Dr. Laura Case was part of APTA’s Academy of Pediatric Physical Therapy Research Summit October 19-21. The event was a thinktank-like gathering of experts discussing the topic of Precision Rehabilitation Research for Children with Neuromotor Conditions with goals of fine-tuning the meaning of precision rehabilitation research in pediatric physical therapy and promoting large-scale and multisite research related to advancing precision rehabilitation, among other objectives.

The American Physical Therapy Association chose Dr. Chad Cook for the Helen Hislop Award for Outstanding Contributions to Professional Literature. He was also honored with a 2023 Distinguished Lecturer award by the American Academy of Orthopaedic Manual Physical Therapists' annual conference, held October 25-29 in St. Louis..

Dr. Derek Clewley chaired the AAOMPT conference, which engaged 700 in-person and virtual participants in October. In addition to overseeing daily conference events, he hosted morning fun runs around the city and moderated a panel discussion. In November, he was also elected as a delegate for APTA North Carolina.

The new editor-in-chief of Physical Therapy & Rehabilitation Journal, APTA’a flagship publication, is Dr. Steve George.

Dr. Adam Goode ’05 was promoted to Professor of Orthopaedic Surgery with tenure.

Co-Director of Clinical Education Dr. Jamie Greco was appointed to the Research Committee of APTA Academy of Education, which has a mission to inspire all PTs and PTAs in their roles as educators and to enhance the development and implementation of evidencebased education practices. Her three-year term began July 1.

Co-Director of Clinical Education and Assistant Director of Curriculum Dr. Katie Myers was appointed vice chair of internal affairs of the American Council of Academic Physical Therapy’s new Clinical Education Commission. Last fall, the ACAPT Board of Directors announced a streamlined organizational structure which transitioned ACAPT’s work from its original nine consortia to four newly-established, integrated and collaborative Institutes

Coordinator of Alumni Engagement Dr. Rosie Canizares ‘07 presented the poster “Interest in Psychological Services within the Dancer Population” on July 7, at the 41st Annual Performing Arts Medicine Association International Symposium.

Faculty development resident Dr. Courtney Jeffries completed the year-long Duke Health’s ADVANCE-Up ( Academic Development, Advocacy, Networking, Coaching and Education for Underrepresented Populations) program. The experience provided unique enrichment activities designed to focus on experiences underrepresented racial and ethnic faculty (UREF) encounter in academic medical centers. At Duke Health, ADVANCE-UP helps create a network of scholars that will enhance the sense of community among underrepresented faculty, foster timely promotion, and increase representation in leadership positions.

$3.1 million award to identify a risk phenotype comprised of biological, psychological, and social factors for up to 450 patients undergoing total shoulder arthroplasty; this risk phenotype will then be used to predict the risk of chronic post-surgical pain so that novel risk stratification and treatment strategies can be developed and tested for effectiveness in this patient population.

The five-year project, Biomarkers to Advance Clinical Phenotypes of Low Back Pain (BACk), aims to identify a risk phenotype of biological, psychological, and social factors for up to 480 patients in the community with acute low back pain. The risk phenotype will be then used to predict the transition from sensitive acute to chronic low back pain.

After a successful feasibility phase, this $29.9-million trial has been approved to progress to the main trial phase. TEAMS-BP (Telehealth-Enhanced Assessment and Management after Stroke-Blood Pressure) will determine whether remote blood pressure monitoring with cellular devices and tailored lifestyle coaching more effectively help reduce blood pressure and prevent secondary (another) stroke, especially among older adults, Black/Hispanic/other underrepresented adults, and/or adults with cognitive and/or physical disabilities, compared to in-person clinic management.

HAPPY NEW YEAR! First off, we are excited to welcome the Duke DPT class of 2026! We would love to wish them luck as they embark on their DPT journey.

Secondly, we would like to congratulate Dr. Steve George, who was recently named the next editor of the Physical Therapy Journal. Dr. George has a decorated research career focusing on MSK pain disorders, and we are excited to see how his expertise will continue to contribute to the field of physical therapy.

Additionally, we want to congratulate Dr. Todd Cade for being named a Fellow of the APTA. The FAPTA is the highest honor for APTA members reserved for those therapists who have continued to provide leadership and advocacy for the physical therapy profession for over 15 years. Dr. Cade continues to serve as inspiration for all of us, and we are proud to have him as our Division Chief.

Finally, Duke is introducing a new Hybrid Orthopaedic Residency Program now accepting the first round of applicants. This program strives to extend advanced clinical education to those who don’t have the access to participate in a traditional program. This residency will combine online education with onsite intensive trainings throughout the year.

Thanks again for everything you guys do to make Duke DPT one of the best programs in the country.

Several Duke DPT alumni were successful in the APTA North Carolina elections: Marissa Araujo Carvalho ’12 will become the Director of Payer Relations election, Mandy Jones Hyslop ’10 will serve on the Nominating Committee and Erik Carvalho ’11 and Bridget Ripa Eubanks ’13 will be on the Delegation.

Kira Battle Bullock ’18 is on the congress programme committee that will shape the scientific programme for World Physiotherapy Congress 2025.

APTA North Carolina awarded the Leadership Excellence Student Scholarship to Morria Heilman ’23.

Anne Gross Davenport ’18 was the keynote speaker for the Oregon Institute of Technology Doctor of Physical Therapy Program White Coat Ceremony and gave the speech "The Crooked and Winding Path."

The American Physical Therapy Association selected Alan Lee ’94 to receive a Lucy Blair Service Award.

Rachel Meyers ’21 was a keynote speaker for the International Rock Climbing Research Association Congress in conjunction with the World Championships in Switzerland.

CLASS OF 2013 REUNION by Pat Ward ‘13 The Duke DPT Class of 2013 celebrated their 10-year reunion during the last weekend of September. Classmates travelled from all over the U.S. to attend. While it felt like no time had passed, a lot of changes have happened in that time. As a group, we've progressed our careers, started families, and travelled the nation and the world. It was exciting to see the growth of our Duke family, and with all of the toddlers running around, we probably should open a daycare! We spent time touring the campus and new educational buildings, hanging out in Durham at the old stomping grounds, enjoying homecoming events and Duke Football, and of course we had to drop in on one of the finest establishments in the Triangle area: Shooters. We are fortunate to have had the opportunity to develop lasting friendships from our time at Duke. We look forward to future gatherings, and we are excited about the growth and development of the Duke DPT program.
