DUKE UNIVERSITY AND DUKE DPT CELEBRATING THE LEGACIES
Duke University is celebrating its Centennial during the 2024–2025 academic year, marking 100 years since Trinity College became Duke University in 1924. This creation of Duke University was made possible through the establishment of the Duke Endowment by James B. Duke. His vision was to create an institution that would attract exceptional leaders, faculty, and trustees, ensuring its place of leadership in education.
Over the years, Duke University has upheld this vision, particularly through the Duke University School of Medicine, which has become one of the world’s leading medical schools. The school benefits from worldclass research facilities and its proximity to the medical center, creating a dynamic environment for teaching, research, and patient care.
A key part of Duke's medical legacy is the Doctor of Physical Therapy (DPT) program, which began in 1943 as a post-baccalaureate certificate program to support soldiers recovering from wartime injuries. The program evolved in 1970 when it became a Master of Science degree and again in 1998 when it was elevated to a Doctoral degree. This change helped raise the national and international standards for physical therapy education.
Today, the DPT program continues to innovate and prepares students to be leaders in clinical practice and research, while expanding opportunities in both teaching and clinical settings. Faculty are performing high-impact grant-funded research, contributing to educational, clinical, and research standards across the globe, and inspiring our students to make a difference in their patients’ lives. As Duke enters its next century, the university and Duke DPT remain committed to shaping the future of healthcare education, research and clinical practice. Please join me in celebrating the rich legacy of Duke!
program news
DPT alumni Allyson Sutkowi-Hemstreet ’14 and Justin Stambaugh ’15 returned to campus for the Duke Alumni LGBTQ+ Network Board meeting and met with current students and faculty during the weekend’s on-campus networking event.
TOP LEFT: Dr. Kyle Covington ’04, Mike Schmidt ’12, and 3rd-year Tyler Grissom met with North Carolina Representative Deborah Ross at the Duke Health Knightdale Clinic to discuss falls prevention and vestibular treatment in older adults.
ABOVE LEFT: This August we welcomed our largest class ever – 104 students – to campus during the Class of 2027 orientation.
Our program was successfully reaccredited by the Commission on Accreditation in Physical Therapy Education!
Kudos to Dr. Kyle Covington '04 and Dr. Derek Clewley for officially launching the Duke DPT Hybrid Orthopaedic Residency this fall with seven new residents and nine identified mentors. The program marks a significant collaboration between DPT and the Duke Health Department of Rehabilitation Services. Mike Schmidt ’12 will be helping to lead a professional development and clinical leadership module in the curriculum. DPT alumni Pat Ward ’13 and Nick LeBlond ’20, along with June Kennedy, Travis Linton, Hollis Bixby and Yana Ginzburg, are the residency faculty who will lead the content throughout the year. Bart Satterfield has designed an advanced version of the Cultural Determinants of Health and Health Disparities course that focuses more specifically on the care of individuals with orthopedic impairments. Crystal Smith, Kaitlin Hicks, and Kristy McLain were incredible at figuring out the complicated logistics and support systems needed for this residency model.
Dr. Marcus Roll ’11 completed his last APTA North Carolina Annual Conference as Programming Chair and has passed the baton onto Dr. Vrunda Kapadia, who was also elected as a delegate for APTA North Carolina.

DR. COOK
Dr. Cade was named the Chairman of the Barth Syndrome Scientific and Medical Advisory Board effective January 1, 2025.
Dr. Chad Cook, as part of a collaborative team, has received the 2025 Charles S. Neer Award from the American Shoulder and Elbow Surgeons (ASES) Foundation in the clinical science category. He was also awarded the prestigious University of Otago Stanley Paris Traveling Research Fellowship in 2024. During a recent trip, he collaborated with Dr. Nadine Foster from Australia and conducted several workshops at the University of Otago in Dunedin. Additionally, he had the opportunity to explore New Zealand's South Island alongside Dr. Stanley Paris, the fellowship's benefactor and the visionary donor behind the establishment of the Duke Center of Excellence in Manual and Manipulative Therapy. This experience enhanced Dr. Cook's research and teaching initiatives and strengthened international ties in physical therapy.
Newly elected American Physical Therapy Association President Dr. Kyle Covington ‘04 spoke at the Brooks Institute of Higher Learning’s annual Scholarly Symposium where he gave a speech titled “The Infinite Innovation Game” and participated as a debate team member in an Oxford Debate.
Dr. Adam Goode ’05 becomes the next President of the Association of Rheumatology Professionals.
An American Council of Academic Physical Therapy task force on Clinical Education Placement Capacity and Process Innovation, chaired by Dr. Jamie Greco recently completed its work. The final report contains 10 evidence-based recommendations related to the future of clinical education. Are cold showers good for you? Dr. Corey Simon says the research is thin. But in a stressful world, taking cold showers – a routine he practices – can be an excellent addition to a health regiment already supported by the basics. Numerous publications syndicated the article.
Dr. Rosie Canizares ‘07 was re-elected as Director of Communications for APTA North Carolina. She also joined the Executive Group of the Duke Master of Biomedical Sciences Program.

CLASS OF 2004 REUNION by Pamela Gjerde ‘04
The Duke DPT Class of 2004 celebrated its 20-year reunion on the weekend of October 24-27th, 2024. Former classmates from California, Idaho, New York, New Jersey, Georgia, Maryland and even a few loyal local folks like our very own Kyle Covington, all made the trek back to Durham. We toured the new DPT facilities, hit up the bookstore for more Duke gear, and most definitely reminisced about our time in the basement of Duke Clinics. Centered around the Duke vs. SMU football game, the class was also privy to a backstage tour of Cameron Indoor thanks to Nicholas Potter, our former classmate who is now the Director of High Performance and Sport Science at Duke. Special thanks to Kyle, Pamela, and Nick for making this all happen!
