Friends of Duckworth, The recipe for the new Duckworth season is an eclectic mix of exciting, intriguing, and highly saleable books. To dive right into this dish, John Hands’ extraordinary COSMOSAPIENS is a study of human evolution from the origins of the universe to now; it tells us how the universe began and we humans evolved. An astonishing book, it often challenges accepted orthodoxy. This book will be argued over. Hurrah! Moving from macro to micro, we have WHY DID THE CHICKEN CROSS THE WORLD? placing the humble bird onto a pedestal. Two more works of nonfiction which will excite booksellers and readers are QUEEN OF SPIES by Paddy Hayes and WILDE’S WOMEN by Eleanor Fitzsimmons. The aforementioned spy was Daphne Park, and this is the first biography of Britain’s most celebrated female agent during the Cold War. The Wilde of WILDE’S WOMEN was, of course, Oscar. A husband and a father as well as homosexual, he was the wit and playwright of his generation. Fiction at Duckworth is as important as ever. John Samuel’s WHAT I TELL YOU IN THE DARK, a novel about angels, is both dark and unsettling. Castle Freeman’s THE DEVIL IN THE VALLEY and movie tie-in GO WITH ME (film starring Anthony Hopkins) are literary thrillers; he’s been compared to the Coen Brothers and Cormac McCarthy but is a truly individual prose stylist. FORETOLD BY THUNDER by Edward Davey is a debut novel, a historical conspiracy raising a question of the very survival of Western civilization. Perhaps the distinguished surprise on our list is a major work by Stef Wertheimer, THE HABIT OF LABOR. Now in his late 80s, he is the German born industrialist and philanthropist who built from nothing perhaps the largest industry in Israel. In this extraordinary memoir he describes not only the journey of his life but also his business principles, which he believes should be used in all countries seeking growth, industrial harmony and, in some cases, even peace with their neighbours. Bernard Taylor’s THERE MUST BE EVIL is a Victorian true-crime tale ending with Elizabeth Berry dropped neatly from the gallows. John Spurling returns with ARCADIAN NIGHTS, following his successful novel THE TEN THOUSAND THINGS. In retelling key narratives from the Greek canon, if it’s possible to say this, he makes the stories newly unforgettable. If we put OUP and CUP in a separate category, we believe Duckworth is Britain’s oldest independent book publisher. But our surprising growth suggests we are yet young! Peter Mayer

However, his curiosity soon turns to fear when an eccentric but terrified archaeology Professor is killed by lightning before he can discuss his discoveries with him. And it doesn’t look like an accident. Are there terrible powers descending from the sky which even modern Science has yet to understand? And is there anybody who doesn’t want to kill him for the secrets of the Etruscans’ sacred text – the Disciplina Etrusca? In a thrilling race against time and enemies - known and unknown - Wolsey begins to wonder if the very survival of Western civilization may depend on his ability to stay one step ahead of his adversaries. Set in the American Southwest, forty miles north of Juárez, Casey Gray’s ambitious, tragicomic, and ultimately redemptive novel follows a group of customers and employees through the twentyfour hour work cycle as they seek comfort and sustenance inside of the cinderblock walls of a classic American institution – The Superstore.

On the eve of the company president’s visit to the store, a manager’s drunk text to a co-worker leads to a series of consequences as brutal as they are wide-ranging. Everyone around him will be affected. With a cast of characters featuring Ernesto, a local gang member struggling to choose a job; Wilma, a grandmother working double shifts to support her family; and Keith, a high school student with a penchant for filmmaking, Gray offers a startingly humane, utterly contemporary portrait of life on the suburban fringe. A vision of an America barely getting by and assaulted by crime, corruption, and exploitation in all of its manifestations, Discount is nevertheless a triumphant and big-hearted novel that marks the arrival of a new voice we won’t soon forget. ‘Fans of Jonathan Franzen, T. C. Boyle, Sam Lipsyte and Jonathan Tropper will flock to Gray’s hearty satire of rampant consumerism and corporate arrogance.’ Booklist

Superhero characters such as Heracles and Perseus and legendary monsters like the Minotaur and Medusa underlie so much of modern storytelling in Western art, literature, drama and music. The classic Greek myths in which they appear are violent stories of murder, power, revenge, love and traumatic family relationships. Ancient in origin maybe, they are nonetheless right up-to-date in terms of in their portrayal of human character, temperament and emotion.

Taking as his starting point many of the famous tourist sites in the Peloponnese, where the stories took place, ‘master of historical fiction’ (Kirkus) John Spurling freshly imagines key narratives from the Greek canon, including tales of the doomed house of Atreus (notably Agamemnon, leader of the Greeks at Troy, murdered by his wife in his palace bathroom), of the god Apollo, Theseus scourge of the Minotaur, the Twelve Labours of Heracles and Perseus’ rescue of Andromeda. Inspired by the great poets and playwrights - from Homer to Euripides - this exemplary recounting tells us much about human archetypes and the Greek people at the heart of Europe’s economic crisis in a lively and contemporary style. His previous novel The Ten Thousand Things is shortlist for the Walter Scott prize John Spurling is the author of the novels The Ten Thousand Things, The Ragged End, After Zenda and A Book of Liszts. He is a prolific playwright, whose plays have been performed on television, radio and stage, including at the National Theatre. Spurling is a frequent reviewer and was for twelve years the art critic of the New Statesman. He lives in London and Arcadia, Greece, and is married to the biographer Hilary Spurling.

From living in a tin-roofed shack north of Dar-esSalaam to becoming Baroness Park of Monmouth, Daphne Park led a most unusual life – one that consisted of a lifelong love affair with the world of Britain’s secret services. In the 1970s she was appointed to SIS’s most senior operational rank as one of its seven Area Controllers – an extraordinary achievement for a women working within this most male-dominated and secretive of organisations.

In this first biography for twenty years of any Cold War British spy – the defectors Philby and Blake apart - Paddy Hayes recounts the fascinating story of the evolution of the Secret Intelligence Service (SIS) from World War II to the Cold War and beyond through the eyes of one of its outstanding and most unusual operatives. He provides the reader with one of the most intimate narratives yet of how the modern SIS actually went about its business whether in Moscow, Hanoi or the Congo. Queen of Spies captures the paranoia, the real life ‘wilderness of mirrors’ aspect of intelligence work finally unveiling all that it may be possible to know about the life of one of Britain’s most celebrated spies. Paddy Hayes was born in Cork and educated in Dublin and Harvard, Massachusetts. He has spent five decades researching the world of intelligence whilst developing business intelligence and market research companies from his native Ireland. His interest in politics extends to acting as a constituency Director of Elections in the last two general elections in Ireland.

NOVEMBER - NEW TITLES COSMOSAPIENS: Human Evolution From The Origin Of The Universe John Hands ‘A truly exceptional piece of work.’ Tim Crane, Knightbridge Professor of Philosophy, Cambridge University Specialist scientific fields are developing at incredibly swift speeds, but what can they really tell us about how the universe began and how we humans evolved to play such a dominant role on Earth? John Hands’s extraordinarily ambitious quest is to bring together this scientific knowledge ISBN: 9780715649558 and evaluate without bias or preconception all PRICE: £30.00 the theories and evidence about the origin and PUBLICATION: 05/11/2015 evolution of matter, life, consciousness, and CATEGORY: POPULAR SCIENCE EXTENT: 608 pp humankind. This astonishing book provides the FORMAT: ROYAL HARDBACK most comprehensive account yet of current ideas EXCLUSIVE: UK/IRE/CW such as cosmic inflation, dark matter, the selfish NOT FOR SALE: US/CAN BIC: PDZ/PGK/PSAJ gene, and neurogenetic determinism. In the clearest possible prose it differentiates the firmly established from the speculative and examines the claims of various fields such as string theory to approach a unified theory of everything. In doing so, it challenges the orthodox consensus in those branches of cosmology, biology, and neuroscience that have ossified into dogma. Its striking analysis reveals underlying patterns of cooperation, complexification, and convergence that lead to the unique emergence in humans of a self-reflective consciousness that enables us to determine our future evolution. This groundbreaking book is destined to become a classic of scientific thinking. John Hands has devoted the last ten years to evaluating scientific theories about human evolution from the origin of the universe. He graduated in chemistry from the University of London and subsequently co-authored two research studies and published one non-fiction book in the social sciences. He was appointed founding Director of the Government’s Co-operative Housing Agency, after which he has tutored in both physics and management studies for the Open University. PAPERBACK ROUNDUPS THE LAST ESCAPER Peter Tunstall The product of a lifetime’s reflection, ‘The Last Escaper’ is Peter Tunstall’s unforgettable memoir of his days in the RAF and as one of the most celebrated of all British POWs. Tunstall was an infamous tormentor of his German captors, dubbed the ‘cooler king’ (on account of his long spells in ‘solitary’), but also a highly skilled pilot, loyal friend and trusted colleague.

ISBN: 9780715649237 PRICE: £9.99 PUBLICATION: 10/09/2015 CATEGORY: MEMOIR EXTENT: 328 pp FORMAT: B-FORMAT PAPERBACK EXCLUSIVE: UK/IRE/CW NOT FOR SALE: US/CAN BIC: BM

‘The Last Escaper’ is a charming and hugely informative last testament written by ‘the last man standing’ from the Colditz generation who risked their lives in the Second World War. It will take its place as one of the classic first-hand accounts of that momentous conflict. Peter Tunstall joined the RAF in 1937 and flew numerous combat missions before his capture off the Dutch coast. After spells in several German POW camps and many audacious and imaginative escape attempts, he was imprisoned in Colditz alongside other celebrated POW legends including Douglas Bader, Pat Reid and Airey Neave. This is the first and only book in which his unique and compelling story is told.

FINDING ARTHUR Adam Ardrey The legend of King Arthur has been told and retold for centuries. As the king who united a nation, his is the story of England itself. But what if Arthur wasn’t English at all? As writer and activist, Adam Ardrey discovered the reason historians have had little success identifying the historical Arthur may be incredibly simple: he wasn’t an Englishman at all. He was from Scotland.

ISBN: 9780715650493 PRICE: £12.99 PUBLICATION: 30/07/2015 CATEGORY: HISTORY EXTENT: 352 pp FORMAT: B-FORMAT PAPERBACK EXCLUSIVE: UK/IRE NOT FOR SALE: US/CAN/ANZ BIC: HBT

Finding Arthur chronicles Ardrey’s unlikely quest to uncover the secret of Scotland’s greatest king and conqueror, which has been hiding in plain sight for centuries. His research began as a simple exploration of a notable Scottish clan, but quickly it became clear that many of the familiar symbols of Arthurian legend - the Round Table, the Sword in the Stone, are based on very real and still accessible places in the Scottish Highlands. Adam Ardrey is the author of Finding Merlin: The Truth Behind the Legend of the Great Arthurian Mage. He is a writer and lawyer, and has previously worked in television.

Classic and Contemporary Russian Literature

THE GOATIBEX CONSTELLATION Fazil Iskander Translated from the Russian by Helen Burlingame

ISBN: 9780715650011 PRICE: £10.99 PUBLICATION: 02/07/2015 CATEGORY:FICTION EXTENT: 160 pp FORMAT: TRADE PAPERBACK EXCLUSIVE: UK/IRE NOT FOR SALE: US/CAN/ANZ BIC: F

Praised by The New York Times Book Review as “an Abkhazian Mark Twain,” Fazil Iskander was one of the most acclaimed writers in the Soviet Union - and also one of the funniest. The Goatibex Constellation is the story of a young newspaperman who returns to his native Abkhazia and is soon caught up in the publicity campaign for a newly produced farm animal: a cross between a goat and a West Caucasian tur. What follows is a vicious and hilarious satire of the Soviet Union’s top-down approach to agriculture, genetics . . . and just about everything else. Harshly criticized at home upon its publication in 1966, The Goatibex Constellation is as fresh, imaginative, and damning today as it was then. Fazil Iskander was born in 1929, in Sukhumi, in the Soviet Union. He is the author of many stories, novels, and novellas, including Sandro of Chegem and Rabbits and Boa Constrictors, also published by Ardis. He lives in Moscow.

AN ORDINARY STORY: A NOVEL Ivan Goncharov Before Ivan Goncharov wrote Oblomov, one of the most acclaimed and enduring classics of Russian literature, there was An Ordinary Story, his debut, which was immediately hailed by critics upon its publication in 1847. An Ordinary Story describes the coming of age of Alexander Aduyev, a romantic young man from the provinces who moves to Petersburg in search of love and a career. Psychologically acute in its delineation of Aduyev’s relationship with his successful and unsentimental mentor uncle, this is a work of complexity and great charm. Featuring a stage adaptation, this edition of An Ordinary Story will enhance Goncharov’s reputation as one of the legends of Russian literary history. ISBN: 9780715650028 PRICE: £11.99 PUBLICATION: 02/07/2015 CATEGORY: FICTION EXTENT: 144 pp FORMAT: TRADE PAPERBACK EXCLUSIVE: UK/IRE NOT FOR SALE: US/CAN/ANZ BIC: F
