Friends of Duckworth, This is the first catalogue produced in our new Shoreditch/Spitalfields offices. We are on the cusp of our tenth year reimagining Duckworth and we think that vision is evident in the mix of titles on this list. We look forward to John Spurling’s novel, The Ten Thousand Things, a sweeping historical novel based on the life of the artist Wang Meng and set in a turbulent China ruled by Mongol invaders, which has both an epic and poetic feel to it. I found it to be a non-stop reading experience. Black Venus by James MacManus recaptures bohemian Paris in the time of Baudelaire; the poet’s affair with the Haitian cabaret singer who inspired him is at the centre. An earlier time and earlier crimes are a chilling backdrop to Stephen Bates’s The Poisoner, the gripping account of Victorian England’s arch murderer, William Palmer, called by Charles Dickens, ‘the greatest villain who ever stood trial at the Old Bailey.’ Alongside these, we are proud to publish such internationally bestselling authors as Ray Kurzweil (How to Create a Mind) and Charles Portis, of True Grit fame (Escape Velocity), in addition to the works of exciting young writers such as Eric Lundgren, whose novel The Facades, called ‘a dazzing invention’ by Kathryn Davis, marks an exciting debut, and Kelsey Osgood, whose memoir How to Disappear Completely is a bold and bracing look at anorexia. I also want to flag up three extraordinary thriller writers whose new titles and backlists are a strong part of our publishing – Robert Littell, Peter Quinn and Charles McCarry. New on this list, Littell’s A Nasty Piece of Work and Quinn’s Dry Bones are exceptionally good reads. Littell’s extraordinarily acclaimed Young Philby also sees its paperback release, as well as a new edition of his Legends to coincide with its TV series adaptation, starring Sean Bean. And the estimable McCarry backlist is now all in handsome new livery. Two areas we continue to build are our drama list, which includes the complete oeuvre of Edward Albee, joined by four new playwrights on this list; and Ardis, our Russian list, which continues to expand and is a growing resource for students and scholars. Whilst looking forward we also glance back to an early publication of this grand firm established in 1898, with a hardback reissue of the 1929 edition of W.H. Hudson’s Green Mansions, with glorious illustrations by Keith Henderson. To these and other titles we add a growing paperback list; I’ve run out of time and space to list them all. But you’ll know them when you see them. And you’ll like them. Peter Mayer

Really Really was one of off-Broadway’s most acclaimed hits upon its premiere in 2012. When morning-after gossip about privileged Davis and ambitious Leigh turns ugly, self-interest collides with the truth and the resulting storm of ambiguity makes it hard to discern just who’s a victim, who’s a predator and who’s a future leader of America. All that’s certain is when the veneer of loyalty and friendship is stripped back, what’s revealed is a vicious jungle of sexual politics, raw ambition and class warfare, where only the strong could possibly survive. Paul Downs Colaizzo has had his work produced at MCC, Signature Theatre, Playwrights Horizons, Experimental Theatre Wing and International Theatre Workshop, Amsterdam. His other plays include Little Gives, The Thing About Getting, Pride in the Falls of Autrey Mill and For Tomorrow, Please Prepare. He holds a BFA from NYU’s Tisch School of the Arts and lives in New York City.

BLACK VENUS

James MacManus A stunning new novel about the all-consuming romance between Baudelaire and his muse, Jeanne Duval, in bohemian Paris ‘Beautifully capturing bohemian Paris in the late nineteenth century … [MacManus] creates a gritty and engrossing world in this beautifully crafted narrative, which will leave readers swooning – and reaching for their favourite recording of La Bohème’ Booklist (starred review)

‘A captivating novel that shed light on more than just what we already knew on Baudelaire … James MacManus brought forth a side of Jeanne [Duval] that was easier to understand and even have compassion for. Black Venus is an exquisite read’ Examiner Black Venus captures the artistic scene in the great French capital city, at a time when the likes of Dumas and Balzac argued literature in the cafés of the Left Bank. Among the bohemians, the young Charles Baudelaire stood out – dressed impeccably thanks to an inheritance that was quickly vanishing. Still at work on the poems that he hoped would make his name, he spent his nights enjoying the alcohol, opium and women who filled the seedy streets of the city. One woman would catch his eye – a beautiful Haitian cabaret singer named Jeanne Duval. Their lives would remain forever intertwined thereafter, and their romance would inspire his most infamous poems – leading to the banning of his masterwork, Les Fleurs du Mal, and a scandalous public trial for obscenity. James MacManus’s Black Venus re-creates the classic Parisian literary world in vivid detail, complete with not just an affecting portrait of the famous poet but also his often misunderstood, much-maligned muse. James MacManus is the managing director of The Times Literary Supplement. He is the author of Ocean Devil: The Life and Legend of George Hogg, which was made into a film starring Jonathan Rhys Meyers, and The Language of the Sea. He lives in London.

In 1950, only 22% of adults were single. Today, more than 50% of adults are. Drawing on over three hundred in-depth interviews with men and women of all ages and every class, Eric Klinenberg reaches some startling conclusions about the seismic impact solo living is having on our culture, business and politics. Eric Klinenberg is Professor of Sociology, Public Policy and Media, Culture and Communications at New York University, and editor of the journal Public Culture. He has also contributed to popular publications such as The New York Times Magazine, Rolling Stone, TIME magazine and the Guardian.

HOW TO DISAPPEAR COMPLETELY On Modern Anorexia

Kelsey Osgood A trenchant and deeply moving memoir that explores the cult of anorexia and other eating disorders in the 21st century ‘Intelligent, moving, beautifully written, Osgood has written a paean to wellness, and taken a forthright look at everything that anorexia, “bastard child of vanity and self-loathing”, took from her life’ Molly McCloskey, author of Circles Around the Sun

‘Kelsey Osgood has written a consequential book about an important subject … Carefully considered and delivered in finely wrought prose, [How to Disappear Completely is] a book that should find a large audience’ Caitlin Flanagan, author of Girl Land and To Hell With All That At fourteen, Kelsey Osgood became fascinated by the stories of women who starved themselves. She devoured their memoirs and magazine articles, committing the most salacious details of their cautionary tales to memory – how little they ate, their lowest weights and their merciless exercise regimes – to learn what it would take to be the very best anorexic. When she was hospitalised for anorexia at fifteen, she found herself in an existential wormhole: how can one suffer from something one has actively sought out? Through her own decade-long battle with anorexia, which included three lengthy hospitalisations, Osgood harrowingly describes the haunting and competitive world of inpatient facilities populated with other adolescents, some as young as ten years old. With attuned storytelling and unflinching introspection, Osgood unpacks the modern myths of anorexia, examining the cult-like underbelly of eating disorders in the young, as she chronicles her own rehabilitation. How to Disappear Completely is a brave, candid and emotionally wrenching memoir that explores the physical, internal and social ramifications of eating disorders, and subverts many of the popularly held notions of the illness and, most hopefully, the path to recovery. Kelsey Osgood received an MFA in Creative Nonfiction from Goucher College. Her essays have appeared in the NewYorker.com, New York Magazine, Self and The Tablet, among others. How to Disappear Completely is her first book. She lives in New York. Find her at kelseyosgood.com

BEFORE GALILEO

The Birth of Modern Science in Medieval Europe

John Freely How science was born in a religious age ‘A sinuous odyssey’ Booklist

ISBN: 9780715647257 PRICE: £9.99 PUBLICATION: March 2014 CATEGORY: Popular Science/History EXTENT: 352pp FORMAT: B-format Paperback ILLUSTRATIONS: 34 b/w EXCLUSIVE: UK/IRE/CW NOT FOR SALE: US/CAN BIC: PDX

Histories of modern science often begin with the heroic battle between Galileo and the Catholic Church, which sparked the Scientific Revolution and led to the world-changing discoveries of Isaac Newton. In reality, more than a millennium before the Renaissance, a succession of scholars paved the way for the discoveries for which Galileo and Newton are credited. In Before Galileo, John Freely investigates the first European scientists, many of them monks, whose influence ranged far beyond the walls of their monasteries. He shows how science and religion coexisted, and places the great discoveries of the age in their rightful context. John Freely was born in New York in 1926. He completed his postdoctoral studies at Oxford and teaches physics at Bosphorous University in Istanbul. He has written over forty books, including The Grand Turk and Istanbul: The Imperial City.

THE TEN THOUSAND THINGS John Spurling

On the cusp of the Ming Dynasty, the sweeping historical novel set in China in the final days of the Mongol Conquerors Praise for John Spurling: ‘Spurling’s book offers many pleasures. It fully inhabits the world of Liszt, and is a tremendous achievement’ Guardian [for A Book of Liszts]

‘Ingenious and entertaining’ Independent [for A Book of Liszts] In the turbulent final years of the Yuan Dynasty, Wang Meng is a low-level bureaucrat, employed by the government of Mongol conquerors established by the Kublai Khan. Though he wonders about his own complicity with this regime, he prefers not to dwell on his official duties, choosing instead to live the life of the mind. Wang is an extraordinarily gifted artist. His paintings are at once delicate and confident; in them, one can see the wind blowing through the trees, the water rushing through rocky valleys, the infinite expanse of China’s natural beauty. But this is not a time for sitting still and, as The Ten Thousand Things unfolds, we follow Wang as he travels through an empire in turmoil. In his wanderings, he encounters, among many memorable characters, other master painters of the period, a fierce female warrior known as the White Tigress who will recruit him as a military strategist, and an ugly young Buddhist monk who rises from beggary to extraordinary heights. In The Ten Thousand Things, John Spurling endows every description – every detail – with the precision and depth that the real-life Wang Meng brought to his painting. But it is also a novel of fated meetings, grand battles and riveting drama, and in its seamless fusion of the epic and the intimate, it deserves to be compared to the classic Chinese novels that partly inspired it. The Ten Thousand Things is nothing short of a literary event. John Spurling is the author of the novels The Ragged End, After Zenda and A Book of Liszts. He is a prolific playwright, whose plays have been performed on television, radio and stage, including at the National Theatre. Spurling is a frequent reviewer and was for twelve years the art critic of the New Statesman. He lives in London and Arcadia, Greece, and is married to the biographer Hilary Spurling.

‘Dry Bones is a savvy, suspenseful tale of World War II espionage and Cold War skullduggery in which Fintan Dunne cements his place in the PI pantheon alongside Philip Marlowe and Sam Spade … Every bit as unpredictable as Quinn’s first two instalments, this riveting conclusion to the trilogy leaves no doubt that Dunne is an ace of Spades who knows when to hold ‘em and when to fold ‘em’ William Kennedy Fintan Dunne, the detective at the centre of The Man Who Never Returned and Hour of the Cat, is back in this spellbinding story of an ill-fated OSS mission into the heart of the Eastern front and its consequences more than a decade after the war’s end. As the Red Army continues its unstoppable march towards Berlin in the winter of 1945, Dunne and his fellow soldier Dick Van Hull volunteer for a dangerous drop behind enemy lines to rescue a team of OSS officers trying to abet the Czech resistance. When the plan goes south, Dunne and Van Hull uncover a secret that will change both of their lives. Years later, Dunne is drawn back into the shadowy realm of Cold War espionage in an effort to clear his friend’s name and right an injustice so shocking that men would, quite literally, kill to keep it quiet. Peter Quinn is the author of Hour of the Cat, The Man Who Never Returned (both published by Duckworth), Looking for Jimmy and The Banished Children of Eve. He has worked as a speechwriter for New York governors Hugh Carey and Mario Cuomo, and as the Editorial Director for Time Warner. THE POISONER

The Life and Crimes of Victorian England’s Most Notorious Doctor

Stephen Bates A gripping account of the murders committed by Dr William Palmer, the ‘Prince of Poisoners’, and his dramatic trial in 1855 In 1856, a baying crowd of over 30,000 people gathered outside Stafford prison to watch the execution of a village doctor from Staffordshire. One of the last people to be publicly hanged, the ‘Rugely Poisoner’, the ‘Prince of Poisoners’, ‘The greatest villain who ever stood trial at the Old Bailey,’ as Charles Dickens described him, Dr William Palmer was convicted in 1855 of murdering his best friend, but was suspected of poisoning more than a dozen other people, including his wife, children, brother and mother-in-law – cashing in on their life insurance to fund his monstrously indebted gambling habit. Highlighting Palmer’s particularly gruesome penchant for strychnine, his trial made news across Europe: the most memorable in fifty years, according to the Old Bailey’s presiding Lord Chief Justice. He was a new kind of murderer – respectable, middle class, personable, and consequently more terrifying – and he became Britain’s most infamous figure until the arrival of Jack the Ripper. The first widely available account of one of the most notorious, yet lesser-known, mass-murderers in British history, The Poisoner takes a fresh look at Palmer’s life and disputed crimes, ultimately asking ‘just how evil was this man?’ With previously undiscovered letters from Palmer and new forensic examination of his victims, Stephen Bates presents not only an astonishing and controversial revision of Palmer’s entire story, but takes the reader into the very psyche of a killer. Stephen Bates is a journalist whose career has included spells at the BBC, Daily Telegraph, Daily Mail and, for the last 22 years, the Guardian, during which time he has reported from more than 40 countries. He is the author of God’s Own Country: Religion and Politics in the USA and A Church at War: Anglicans and Homosexuality. He lives in Kent.

One of the most important Russian playwrights of the nineteenth century, Alexander Ostrovsky (1823-1886) is credited with bringing realism to the Russian stage. A contemporary of Turgenev, Dostoevsky and Tolstoy, and precursor to Chekhov, he was a keen sociological observer, often exposing abuses of power, which landed him in trouble with the censors again and again. He wrote 47 original plays and began the tradition of acting today associated with Stanislavsky. Ostrovsky’s plays were written with performance in mind and with a masterful use of colloquial language. To this day they are a much-performed part of the Russian repertory. This volume collects four of Ostrovsky’s key plays, each from a different decade – A Profitable Position, An Ardent Heart, Without a Dowry and Talents and Admirers – and is rounded out by the translator’s introduction, an afterword for each play, an extensive bibliography and complete list of Ostrovsky’s works.

THE PETTY DEMON Fyodor Sologub

Translated and Introduced by S. D. Cioran With an Appendix of Critical Articles Edited by Murl Barker The Petty Demon is one of the funniest Russian novels ever written. It is also the most decadent of the great Russian classics, replete with naked boys, sinuous girls and a strange mixture of beauty and perversity. The main character, Peredonov, is as comical as he is disgusting – at once a victim, a monster, a hypocrite and a sadistic dullard. The plot moves from Peredonov’s petty quest for a promotion to arson and murder, via one of the most incredible and uproarious scandal scenes in world literature, the masquerade attended by the boy Sasha dressed as a beautiful geisha. Even in its censored form, The Petty Demon is one of the most provocative and sexually open works of the Russian literary canon. Sologub removed many passages that would have been unacceptable at the time of publication. These sections are restored in this edition, so that the reader can experience the novel as it was originally written.
